NCERT Class 8 Science Chapter 1, Crop Production and Management deals with the fundamentals of crop production and its management. The chapter categorizes the term crop ad defines them with certain examples. On the basis of seasons in which the crops are grown, they are classified as - 

Kharif crops (monsoon crops or autumn crops)

Rabi crops (winter crops)

a. Preparation of soil: 

i. The first method in crop management is soil preparation.  This process is done by loosening the soil with the help of a plough which helps in ploughing or tilling it. 

ii. Loosening of soil particles adds humus and nutrients and increases the absorption of water and manure in the soil which increases crop yields.

i. After the soil preparation, the best seeds are chosen to sow in the soil for production.

ii. Seeds are sown with the help of a seed drill which is in the funnel shape used in modern-day tractors to sow the seeds at a particular depth in the soil.

c. Weeding:

i. Unwanted plants which grow and interfere along with the other plants to reduce their yield are called weeds. Unwanted plants are removed by the process called weeding  

ii. We have to remove weeds as they compete with the plants in light and space and take up the nutrients given to the plant from the soil. Xanthium, Parthenium, etc. are some common weeds that affect the growth of plants. 

iv. Weedicides are used to control the weeds which is a chemical that only kills the weeds, not the crops. 

d. Threshing: 

i. After the crop harvesting, the last step in which the grains are separated from the chaff is called threshing.

ii. “Combine” is a machine that carries out this threshing process. The combine is the combination of harvester and thresher which harvests crops and also separates the grains.

5. Explain how fertilisers are different from manure.

6. What is irrigation? Describe two methods of irrigation that conserve water. 

Ans: Irrigation:

Supplying water to the crops in the field at various intervals for the growth of the plants is called irrigation.

Intervals differ from crop to crop, season to season, and are also affected by the type of soil and rainfall.

The irrigation sources may include ponds, lakes, canals rivers, and dams. 

Two methods of which conserve water are drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation:

Drip irrigation: It has an arrangement of pipes or tubes with small holes from which plants are watered drop by drop at the base of the root, so that water cannot be wasted.

Sprinkler irrigation: It has an arrangement of vertical pipes with rotating nozzles on the top for the distribution of water to uneven or sandy lands without wastage of water.

7. If wheat is sown in the Kharif season, what would happen?  Discuss. 

Kharif season is from June to October. If wheat is planted during this season, it is possible that the entire crop will be damaged due to a variety of issues including a lack of optimal temperature, adaptability, and insect availability.

The rainy season is included in the Kharif season, which is not conducive to wheat crop growth, as wheat grows well in the winter or rabi season. As a result, the wheat crop must not be planted during the Kharif season, but rather during the Rabi season.

8. Explain how soil gets affected by the continuous plantation of crops in a field. 

Soil minerals such as potassium, nitrogen, phosphorus, as well as other nutrients are depleted as a result of persistent soil plantation. It takes up all the plant nutrients which take a long time to replenish. 

These ions are important for all plants to undergo proper growth. If a continuous plantation is done these minerals won’t get time to replenish and the crop yield decreases immediately.

9. What are weeds? How can we control them?

Ans: Weeds:

Undesirable or unwanted plants that grow along with crop plants that reduce crop productivity are known as weeds. Xanthium, Parthenium, etc. are some common weeds.  

Weeds compete for light, nutrients, and space with the crop. As a consequence, crop plants receive less light, nutrients, and space to grow. We have to remove weeds as they compete with the plants in light and space and take up the nutrients given to the plant from the soil. 

This, in turn, reduces their productivity. Thus, various weeding methods are employed. 

    Some important weeding methods to control the growth of weeds are:

Weeds can be controlled using weedicides. It is a chemical, which is sprayed in the fields to kill all available weeds.  Weedicides are not harmful to crops. 

Weeds are also removed by tilling before sowing crops. Weeds are uprooted by tilling. The optimum time to get rid of weeds would be before they blossom and release seeds.

Important Questions of NCERT Science Class 8 Chapter 1 Crop Production and Management

Let’s start with the basics. All the topics are described in the easy question-answer format so that students’ basics get cleared easily and they understand each term deeply. 

1. What is a crop? What are its types?

A crop can be defined as plants of the same type that are grown and cultivated as a source of food. This is done in a large cultivable land. There are also different types of crops. These different types of crops are:

Rabi Crops: These crops are grown during the winter season, which is from October to March.

Kharif Crops: These crops are sown during the rainy season, which is from July to October.

2. What are the process and tools required for preparing the soil?

Before any seed can be sown, the soil is prepared for the crop. This is done so that seeds can be properly sewn inside the land. There are several processes and tools that are used for preparing the soil. We have discussed those methods and tools in a list that is mentioned below.

Ploughing or Tilling

Ploughing or tilling is the process through which the soil is loosened and turned. This is done with the help of a plough.

As mentioned above, a plough is a device that is mainly used by farmers for various purposes like loosening the soil and adding fertilizers to the soil. A plough can also be used to remove weeds and scraping of soil. Usually, a plough shaft is the main part of a plough, which is made from a log of wood.

A ploughshare is another part of a plough and it can be explained as a triangular iron strip. The other end of the shaft has a handle. The other end is attached to a beam. This beam is pulled by the bull after it is placed on the neck of the bull. A wooden plough can also be operated by a man. These days many farmers are also switching to iron ploughs.

A hoe is a tool that can be used for digging up the soil. This tool can also be used to remove weeds and loosen up the soil before planting a sapling into the soil.

A cultivator is a tool that is attached to a tractor. It helps in loosening the soil. There are many farmers who prefer to use cultivators instead of ploughs as cultivators are faster.

3. What is sowing? How to sow a seed?

Soil preparation is necessary before sowing seeds. Sowing is the process of planting seeds in the soil.

Steps to sow seed:

Firstly The quality of the seed is crucial for determining crop yield. Selecting good seeds involves placing them in water to check for dead or damaged seeds.

Dead and damaged seeds will float on water, while good seeds will sink.

Traditional tools such as scythes, shovels, ploughs, and pickaxes were used before modern agricultural practices.

Traditional sowing tools resembled funnels with two or three tubes for placing seeds in the soil.

Seed drills are now used with tractors for uniform and efficient sowing.

Seed drills ensure that seeds are sown at a specific depth and covered with soil.

Nurseries are places where young trees and plants are grown for later transplantation.

Nurseries are considered repositories of saplings by experts.

After sowing, seeds undergo germination and the plant starts to emerge.

Adding manure or fertilizers is the next task for the farmer after seed germination.

4. What are manure and fertilizers?

The choice between manure and fertilisers requires considering these differences. Excessive use of fertilisers can result in pollution and pH changes in the soil. Some farmers choose to leave their land fallow to naturally replenish lost nutrients and minerals. After a period of time, the land can be used again.

5. What is crop rotation?

In crop rotation, the same crop is not grown continuously. This prevents the erosion of the fertility of the soil. Also, another major part of growing crops is protecting the crops from weeds.

6. What are weeds? What is tilling?

Weeds can be defined as undesirable plants that grow naturally along with the main crop. The weeds are harmful because they compete with the crop by absorbing all the nutrients, water, light, and space.

Tilling is a process that can be done after sowing the crops. This process helps in killing and uprooting the weeds. One can also choose to remove weeds by physically uprooting the weeds from the soil or by chopping the weeds to the ground level. This is known as the manual removal method.

Some farmers also use weedicides, which are chemicals that are used for killing weeds. Students should remember that weedicides do not harm the main crop. After that, harvesting is performed.

7. What is harvesting? What are the methods to harvest the crops?

Harvesting can be explained as the process of cutting the crop once it has matured. 

There are two main methods through which harvesting can be done. These methods are:

Manual method where a sickle can be used.

The mechanical method in which a harvester, which is a huge machine, can be used.

8. What is threshing and winnowing?

Threshing is also the process that can be used for loosening the grains from the chaff. This process can be performed manually or with the help of machines. Winnowing is also a method for separating grain seeds from the chaff. But this method is done with the help of the wind. Because of the wind, the lighter chaff will fly away and the heavier grains will fall down.

9. How the grains are stored?

Once the grain is separated, then the storage of the grains is left. Ideally, the grains should be stored in silos and granaries after harvesting. One should ensure that grains are stored in a dry place that does not have any fungal infestation or rodent infestation. Fumigation of the storage place should also be done to make sure that the storage place is free from microbes.

For students who do not know what granaries mean, it is the place where the freshly obtained food grains are stored. Also, animal husbandry is defined as the management and care of farm animals. This is done to obtain milk, eggs, or meat.

The majority of the meals that we take in a day include carbohydrates or sugar. But the form in which we consume them is different and the one that is found inside the human body is different. In our body, glucose is broken down into simpler substances and you can opt for a glucose experiment for your Class 8 science project through which you can analyse the presence of carbohydrates in glucose and our food. As per your choice, collect some food items of daily life along with food dye, room temperature water, plastic glasses, knife and record your observations. You will also need glucose reading strips for this science project and create a positive strip by dipping a glucose strip into a sugar-based or glucose solution as well as a negative strip by dipping a glucose strip into the water. Then, test each of the foods you have taken with these two strips and record your observations. 

Water in its pure form has a specific boiling point and if we keep on adding some solutions or chemicals to water, its boiling point tends to change. For this simple and interesting science project for Class 8, you need some basic household items, i.e. sugar, salt, lemon juice, oil, oranges, jaggery, tea, etc. Ask an adult for supervision and assistance in helping you test the boiling point of water while adding a different item every time. Record your observation for these items and create your Science project accordingly. 

Having a homemade volcano is an amazing science science project. You need to build a cone shaped structure similar to a volcano with a container in the middle. Then in that container, add vinegar. Now, to demonstrate the working of the volcano, add baking soda along with some food colour to the vinegar. The volcano will erupt with effervescence which is generated due to the reaction of baking soda and vinegar thus releasing CO2 gas.

The red cabbage that we eat consists of a natural pH indicator that we can use to identify the nature of various substances. Since not many people are aware of this natural indicator, you can use red cabbage to create a unique Science project for Class 8. First, extract the juice of red cabbage and take some paper cups. Now, you need a specific amount of the following items in each paper cup:

  • Baking Soda
  • Lemon Juice

Now, pour the red cabbage juice into each cup until the colour of the liquid/powder [baking soda] changes. Note down your observations regarding the nature of acid and base in each item as indicated by the red cabbage and astonish your class with an amazing science experiment!

Do you know that the potato we use in our food can actually convert chemical energy into electrical energy? As a potato has many nutrients that act as chemicals in a particular setup, it can be used as an electrical battery and thus a unique working model for your Class 8 science project! You need a few potatoes to create your own potato battery and the process is quite simple. Take two potatoes, zinc and copper electrodes, 6 alligator clips and a small bulb/digital clock. First, insert the zinc and copper electrodes in the potatoes and then use alligator clips to attach the electrodes with the clock or bulb [adult supervision necessary].

You will see that the potatoes will charge electrodes and then the clock or the bulb will turn on automatically.

Amongst the most popular science projects for Class 8, you must have come across this one in day-to-day scenarios. Have you noticed that the pan in which we cook gets all heated up including the handles of it or the tong with which we cook our chapatis becomes hot? This is because of thermal conductivity in solids which means that the molecules of solids when heated up move in different directions and spread the heat. For your project, you can pick a bunch of solid items and check at which temperature the entire object gets heated up and up to which temperature.

You must have come across various high-end cameras, but a pinhole camera is something that you can construct from simple household products. The camera does not contain any type of lens rather it is a light-proof box which has a small hole on one of its sides. Light from one side will fall into it and then by using its effort, it will reflect the picture on the other side of it.  the image formed by this lens is inverted, thus,  it becomes a tree basis of your entire project.

8 Ways to Create AI-Proof Writing Prompts

C reating 100 percent AI-proof writing prompts can often be impossible but that doesn’t mean there aren’t strategies that can limit the efficacy of AI work. These techniques can also help ensure more of the writing submitted in your classroom is human-generated. 

I started seeing a big uptick in AI-generated work submitted in my classes over the last year and that has continued. As a result, I’ve gotten much better at recognizing AI work , but I’ve also gotten better at creating writing prompts that are less AI-friendly. 

Essentially, I like to use the public health Swiss cheese analogy when thinking about AI prevention: All these strategies on their own have holes but when you layer the cheese together, you create a barrier that’s hard to get through. 

The eight strategies here may not prevent students from submitting AI work, but I find these can incentivize human writing and make sure that any work submitted via AI will not really meet the requirements of the assignment. 

1. Writing AI-Proof Prompts: Put Your Prompt Into Popular AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and Bard 

Putting your writing prompt into an AI tools will give you an immediate idea of how most AI tools will handle your prompt. If the various AI chatbots do a good, or at least adequate, job immediately, it might be wise to tweak the prompt. 

One of my classes asks students to write about a prized possession. When you put this prompt into an AI chatbot, it frequently returns an essay about a family member's finely crafted watch. Obviously, I now watch out for any essays about watches. 

2. Forbid Cliché Use

Probably the quickest and easiest way to cut back on some AI use is to come down hard on cliché use in writing assignments. AI tools are essentially cliché machines, so banning these can prevent a lot of AI use. 

Equally as important, this practice will help your students become better writers. As any good writer knows, clichés should be avoided like the plague. 

3. Incorporate Recent Events

The free version of ChatGPT only has access to events up to 2022. While there are plugins to allow it to search the internet and other internet-capable AI tools, some students won’t get further than ChatGPT. 

More importantly, in my experience, all AI tools struggle to incorporate recent events as effectively as historic ones. So connecting class material and assignments to events such as a recent State of Union speech or the Academy Awards will make any AI writing use less effective. 

4. Require Quotes

AI tools can incorporate direct quotations but most are not very good at doing so. The quotes used tend to be very short and not as well-placed within essays. 

Asking an AI tool for recent quotes also can be particularly problematic for today’s robot writers. For instance, I asked Microsoft's Copilot to summarize the recent Academy Awards using quotes, and specifically asked it to quote from Oppenheimer's director Christopher Nolan’s acceptance speech. It quoted something Nolan had previously said instead. Copilot also quoted from Wes Anderson’s acceptance speech, an obvious error since Anderson wasn’t at the awards .  

5. Make Assignments Personal

Having students reflect on material in their own lives can be a good way to prevent AI writing. In-person teachers can get to know their students well enough to know when these types of personal details are fabricated. 

I teach online but still find it easier to tell when a more personalized prompt was written by AI. For example, one student submitted a paper about how much she loved skateboarding that was so non-specific it screamed AI written. Another submitted a post about a pair of sneakers that was also clearly written by a "sole-less" AI (I could tell because of the clichés and other reasons). 

6. Make Primary or Scholarly Sources Mandatory

Requiring sources that are not easily accessible on the internet can stop AI writing in its tracks. I like to have students find historic newspapers for certain assignments. The AI tools I am familiar with can’t incorporate these. 

For instance, I asked Copilot to compare coverage of the first Academy Awards in the media to the most recent awards show and to include quotes from historic newspaper coverage. The comparison was not well done and there were no quotes from historical newspaper coverage. 

AI tools also struggle to incorporate journal articles. Encouraging your students to include these types of sources ensures the work they produce is deeper than something that can be revealed by a quick Google search, which not only makes it harder for AI to write but also can raise the overall quality.  

7. Require Interviews, Field Trips, Etc. 

Building on primary and scholarly sources, you can have your students conduct interviews or go on field trips to historic sites, museums, etc. 

AI is still, thankfully, incapable of engaging in these types of behavior. This requires too much work for every assignment but it is the most effective way to truly ensure your work is human- not computer-written. 

If you’re still worried about AI use, you can even go a step further by asking your students to include photos of them with their interview subjects or from the field trips. Yes, AI art generators are getting better as well, but remember the Swiss cheese analogy? Every layer of prevention can help. 

8. Have Students Write During Class

As I said to start, none of the methods discussed are foolproof. Many ways around these safeguards already exist and there will be more ways to bypass these in the future. So if you’re really, really worried about AI use you may want to choose what I call the “nuclear option.” If you teach in person you can require students to write essays in person. 

This approach definitely works for preventing AI and is okay for short pieces, but for longer pieces, it has a lot of downsides. I would have trouble writing a long piece in this setting and imagine many students will as well. Additionally, this requirement could create an accusatory class atmosphere that is more focused on preventing AI use than actually teaching. It’s also not practical for online teaching. 

That all being said, given how common AI writing has become in education, I understand why some teachers will turn to this method. Hopefully, suggestions 1-7 will work but if AI-generated papers are still out of hand in your classroom, this is a blunt-force method that can work temporarily.

A private school in the US is making news for giving assignments to Class 8 students on Adolf Hitler, the dictator of Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945. According to Fox5 Atlanta, the students were given a series of questions asking them to rate some of Hitler's characteristics as a leader. A screenshot of the question-and-answer assignment given by Mount Vernon School in Atlanta to the students has been posted on X by Fox5 reporter, highlighting the sections that are causing controversy.

In one of the questions, students were asked, "According to the Mount Vernon Mindset rubric, how would you rate Adolf Hitler as a 'solution seeker'?"

Another one asked students to "rate Adolf Hitler as an ethical decision-maker".

Both the questions included options like "Lacks Evidence, Approaching Expectations, Meets Expectations, Exceeds Expectations".

Students too found the questions "troubling" and wondered if the questions glorified the Nazi leader.

"Obviously, that looks horrible in the current context. Knowing Mount Vernon, we do things a little odd around here," one student told Fox5 Atlanta.

One student said he can see the school's intended approach to critical thinking.

"I can definitely see why they'd be upset, but overall, I think it's important to look at both sides of the coin in every situation and I think it's important to be able to compare and contrast everything that's happened in our world history, whether it's been good or bad," said the student.

The outlet also spoke to some former students who said these questions weren't given to them during eighth grade.

When school officials came to know about the phrasing of the questions, they removed if from the school's curriculum.

The principal of Mount Vernon, Kristy Lundstrom, wrote in a statement that the assignment was "an exploration of World War II designed to boost student knowledge of factual events and understand the manipulation of fear leveraged by Adolf Hitler in connection to the Treaty of Versailles."

Plant life forms an integral part of the ecosystem, and they form the natural habitat of various animals in an ecosystem. Destroying plant life will ultimately threaten the existence of animals in a particular ecosystem and may lead to their extinction.

In plants, Photosynthesis takes place through the absorption of CO 2  from the earth’s atmosphere. The percentage of CO 2  in the atmosphere increases rapidly if the plant life of an area is destroyed. Increased concentrations of CO 2 result in the trapping of excessive heat radiations within the Earth’s atmosphere contributing to global warming. This results in the rise of the temperature of the Earth and disturbs the water cycle which occurs in nature. Hence, rainfall pattern changes, leading to droughts and floods.

(c) Effects of deforestation on villages

The soil particles are held together in a place by the roots of the plants, trees and other vegetation. In the event of water flow or a high-speed wind over the top layer of the soil, the soil particles get removed easily as there are no plants to hold them in place. Lately, soil erosion has increased by deforestation activities. Soil loses fertility and humus. Hence, fertile land fit for agriculture turns into a desert.

The risk of natural calamities like floods and drought in urban areas has increased by deforestation. It will also lead to global warming because of increased CO 2 levels in the atmosphere. This is because of the process of plant respiration by which they consume harmful carbon dioxide and give out good quality Oxygen. Thus, they keep greenhouse gases and global warming under check. In order to make this possible, I would initiate the proceedings and organise weekly events on the same. Creating awareness among the children and youth would be of top priority as they will easily understand the issues that we are facing. Planting new trees is as important as looking after the existing ones. So, my volunteers and I would water the plants and trees on a regular basis.

More geomagnetic storms remain likely for today as sun continues to erupt X-class flares

The strongest geomagnetic storm in more than 20 years slammed Earth on Friday, with explosions of plasma and magnetic fields causing some radio blackouts and the northern lights to extend to the southern U.S. On Monday, officials warned the storms aren't yet over. 

NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center said early Monday that a G3, or "strong," geomagnetic storm warning was in effect until 2 a.m. ET. While stronger storms are no longer likely and conditions are expected to "gradually wane" throughout the day, the center said in its forecast that moderate to strong geomagnetic storms are "likely" on Monday, as are minor storms on Tuesday. 

The center also said "solar activity is expected to be at high levels" with a possibility of more solar flares, or bursts of electromagnetic radiation from the sun.

The update came as another X-class solar flare was recorded. X-class flares are the strongest class of these solar bursts, and the latest was recorded as " moderate ." 

"Flares of this magnitude are not frequent ," the center said. "...Users of high frequency (HF) radio signals may experience temporary degradation or complete loss of signal on much of the sunlit side of Earth." 

A separate and stronger X-class flare was recorded on Sunday and may have caused roughly hour-long high-frequency radio blackouts across wide areas on the sunlit side of the Earth. 

The flares came from Sunspot Region 3664 , a massive area of the sun responsible for much of the flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that led to the weekend's extreme geomagnetic storm. That spot remains "the most complex and active on the disk," NOAA said. That spot is so large that people wearing eclipse glasses can see it from Earth, as it measures roughly 124,000 miles across, according to Space.com.

That spot has been active alongside Regio 3663, which combined with 3664, is considered "magnetically complex and much larger than Earth," NOAA said. 

CMEs, or large bursts from the sun's atmosphere filled with plasma and magnetic fields that lead to geomagnetic storms, are expected to continue throughout Monday and fuel G3 activity. 

"Continuing, but weaker CME influences are anticipated to decrease responses down to unsettled to G1 (Minor) levels on 14 May," NOAA forecasts. 

Solar radiation storms, though minor, are also expected in the same timeframe, as are more radio blackouts, although some of those could be considered "strong" events depending on the solar flares that erupt.

CONWAY, Mo. (KY3) - Wednesday (May 15) marked a historic occasion in Conway, Missouri, and it was all because a high school student took a teacher’s assignment and ran with it.

Christen Wilson teaches Civics at Conway High School, and little did she know that a simple assignment about the Constitution would spark a momentous occasion in the small Laclede County town of just over 700 people, thanks to junior student Kolby Wicker.

“I gave the class an assignment that they had to symbolize the Preamble,” Wilson explained. “And I told them to play to their strengths. So, if they’re a great woodworker, make symbols of the Preamble out of wood. And Kolby says, ‘I don’t really know what to do. What if I write to an elected official?’ I told him that was fine, and when he told me he was going to write the governor, I said, ‘Sure! Think big. Think outside the box.’ But never in a million years did I think the governor would accept the invitation.”

“I wrote a letter and sent in a formal request through his website,” Wicker said of his longshot attempt. “When I wrote the letter, I was thinking, it was never going to happen but I’ll do it anyway because I’m stubborn. It’s like Wayne Gretzky, who once said, ‘You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.’”

So Wicker took a shot and scored as during the school’s spring break in late March, he heard back from Governor Mike Parson’s office that Missouri’s top state official would love to accept the invitation.

Kolby then notified his teacher that his homework assignment had been completed.

“The message actually said: ‘Mrs. Wilson, Governor Parson has agreed to roll up at Conway,’” Wilson recalled with a laugh.

And sure enough, Governor Parson and his staff did roll up to Conway High School at 9:30 Wednesday morning.

Kolby Wicker was among the first in the receiving line to shake Parson’s hand.

“You’re the one who sent me that request,” Parson said as he greeted Wicker. “You made it happen for everybody here.”

Parson toured the school’s agricultural center, met with the Civics class, and was greeted by a packed house of students and adults in the gym. Wicker was in the seat right next to Parson as Principal Kathryn Taylor explained the historical significance of the occasion.

“Thanks for helping us celebrate what we believe to be the first time a governor has visited Conway,” she said as Parson smiled.

Parson made it clear why he decided to make the trip. A native of Wheatland and long-time resident of Bolivar, where he still owns and operates a family farm, the governor holds a special place in his heart for rural communities.

“My staff has a meeting every week to discuss my schedule, and as they were running through all the requests for appearances, I said, “Whoa, whoa, whoa. Let’s go back to Conway,’” Parson recalled. “I said to them, ‘I come from the kind of people who live in Conway. I grew up like the kids from Conway. I want to go there.’ And that’s the main reason I’m here today. I want all of you to understand that all things are possible. I’m standing here in front of you as one of those people who never dreamed I’d be in the position I am today.”

Parson told the crowd about his childhood growing up on a farm.

“There were four of us boys, and my mom and dad were sharecroppers,” he said. “So we moved from farm to farm when I was a kid just trying to scratch out a living. And I will tell you that mom and dad knew nothing about child labor laws. They didn’t even know what that meant. When you were old enough to get out there and drive a tractor or a truck, they put you to work. But one thing you learn by being out on the farm is a good work ethic.”

Parson explained that his life experiences, including his time in the military and law enforcement, prepared him for his most challenging days in the governor’s office when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and no one knew exactly what would happen.

“As students, you know that when you have a question, you can go to your teacher, head to the library, or go to the internet to find out the answers,” he said. “But here’s the challenge I had that you might have someday. When COVID first hit, there was nobody to ask. There was no playbook on what to do. You are the only one to decide what’s going to be best for the people of this state, and you have to live with that responsibility. But what prepares you for that moment is everything that’s happened to you before that moment. How you grew up, where you got your schooling, what your parents are like, what your grandparents are like, what common sense means, and what faith means. All that goes into making those decisions and those are the things that really influence your life more than you’ll ever know. Because at a difficult time, you’ll always go back to the foundation of where you came from. The vast majority of people don’t know where Wheatland or Conway is, but don’t you ever think that because you come from a small school, you’re at a disadvantage? I say it’s more of an advantage because of all the skill sets you learned and the way you were brought up.”

Parson concluded his message to the crowd by telling the students they had the responsibility to uphold the rights and freedoms outlined in the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, and Constitution.

“The only way that the American Dream stays alive is through you,” he said to the students. “Someday, somebody’s going to open a door for you, and you are going to make the decision about whether you walk through the door or not. If you don’t walk through it, somebody else will, and you’ll be standing there scratching your head and wondering why you didn’t go through the door. When opportunity comes, you need to be ready for it.”

Afterward, the teacher and student who had made it all possible expressed relief and appreciation for what they’d just witnessed.

“This will be one of those stories I’ll tell my children and grandchildren,” Wicker said.

“Our town doesn’t get a lot of recognition, but I think this was such a proud moment for our community and our school,” Wilson said.
