Addressing Student Choice in Assignment Submissions

Computer and books

Assessments are one of the most critical elements of a course. Not only are they the activities students engage in, but they’re also the measure of whether students have mastered your learning objectives. As such, it’s essential that you maximize the impact they can make.

While the traditional model of assessment requires students to all complete the same activity, newer instructional models and technology support allowing students the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in unique ways that are relevant to their learning preferences, career goals, and more. Fortunately, adding an element of student choice to your students’ assignment submissions does just that. In this article, we’ll discuss a few strategies you can employ to begin addressing student choice in your online course assessments.

Universal Design for Learning

It’s hard to discuss student choice without acknowledging universal design for learning (UDL). At its core, UDL is an instructional design framework that acknowledges the fact that every student comes into a classroom with a preset preference for how he or she learns. Disabilities, cultural differences, and even past educational or professional experiences can shape how students prefer to learn and demonstrate that learning, and UDL suggests that we address these preferences by designing for the margins.

The idea behind “designing for the margins” is that many courses are designed for the “average” student. In most situations, though, that student doesn’t necessarily exist. Every person learns (and prefers to showcase that learning) in a slightly different way. Thus, instead of designing with this average student in mind, we need to plan for the idea that there will be differences in learning between students and focus design decisions on the needs of those at the margins of “normal.” When you do this, you also meet the needs of those between those margins.

What does this have to do with student choice in assignments, though? While this article covers the ins and outs of this in further detail later, the crux of it is that student choice is one way you can begin designing for the margins. By building a structure that allows students to select how they demonstrate their learning, you encourage them to play to their strengths, challenge their weaknesses, and take control of their educational experience. Because students individually guide this process, there’s no average student to consider. The needs of everyone are met.

For more information on UDL, including the neuroscience research and the different brain networks it acknowledges, we recommend exploring CAST’s resources on the subject .

Strategies for Addressing Student Choice

While there’s tremendous value in allowing your students to have a say in how they demonstrate their learning, as with any course design endeavor, it’s important to do so in a way that’s purposeful and appropriate for your subject matter and audience. To do this, consider the following tips:

Build in Goal Setting

One way to frame a discussion on student choice is to look at goal setting, which can be used as a powerful way to encourage higher levels of performance. Essentially, goal setting can positively impact the student experience by not only offering various methods of action, but by helping students visualize what they want. This, in turn, can frame their assignment submission choices. For instance, in an education course, you could ask students to visualize their career goals. Where do they want to teach? What subject matter? Are there any specific activities or classroom design elements they’d like to use? Then, if the course asks them to develop a classroom management plan, for instance, they can keep those goals in mind. The goals can inform what the submission ends up looking like, giving students choice in the matter and making the assessment relevant to their careers.

Just like it can be important to give students a degree of choice in these assignment submissions, it’s equally important to give students choice in how they set their goals. Some students, for example, prefer to write out goals in paper-based planners. Other students benefit from checklists of recommended steps. Similarly, a course could include estimates on how much time students need to set aside for schoolwork and studying, or an hour-by-hour planning sheet that they can use to identify work schedules, personal commitments, and planned study time. By focusing on different methods of time management and goal setting, it becomes more likely that all students will find a way that works best for them.

Ultimately, by considering individual students’ goals (and building that goal-setting process into the course), you can help them shape what their interests might be and how they might explore those interests when it comes to flexibility in their assignment submissions.

Broaden Learning Objectives

When making any course design decision, it’s important to consider your learning objective. When you’re talking about student choice, though, it can be helpful to see if there’s an opportunity to broaden what you expect of students. This can be an important time to remember the course design triangle and your instructional alignment. When doing so, ask yourself, is the skill or verb of my learning objective absolutely essential for demonstrating competence?

If possible, it can be helpful to broaden learning objectives that might be just as effective if they’re open for student choice. For instance, could students “construct a persuasive argument” instead of “write a persuasive essay”? The former allows for some flexibility—students could record themselves delivering a persuasive speech, have a call with you in which they try to persuade you of their point, or even just write the persuasive essay—whereas the latter option restricts what students can do. If you can broaden your learning objectives in such a way that students can make their submissions fit their personal, professional, and academic goals, even better.

Simply put, remember to ask yourself, do students have to perform a specific task in order to demonstrate their competence, or is there room for flexibility?

Allow Students to Choose the Medium

This might tie in your broader learning objective, but another thing you can do is give students choice in the manner through which they demonstrate that skill. Can they submit a video? An infographic? A play?

For example, if an assignment asks students to demonstrate how they’ll use a specific skill, you can set the parameters for demonstrating that learning without dictating that it must be a paper, for instance. There are lots of ways students can creatively show their learning. For example, if we go back to that “construct a persuasive argument” example, some options could include allowing students to write a script showing an interaction in which someone persuades someone else, drawing the aforementioned interaction out in a comic-book style, or even creating a video in which they deliver a persuasive speech or engage in a debate. Each meets the learning objective—it just does so in a way that might be unique to each student’s goals.

assignment submission notice for students

If you build student choice into your assessments, there are a couple side effects you might come across. One natural side effect is that you’ll have to avoid including the medium of the submission in any rubric or assignment instructions. This might seem obvious, but you might be surprised to see how easily you come across it. As soon as you use the word “write,” for example, you’re limiting students’ options. With that in mind, if you make the decision to build in flexibility, you should be explicit about it and tell students that they have options available to them.

It’s also worth considering your rubric design. This can seem difficult to pull off given the options available to students, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and you don’t have to create a rubric for every action students might take. Instead, consider the essential skills you’re asking students to show mastery of and focus your rubric on those. For instance, our persuasive writing example wouldn’t need separate rubrics for the essay, the comic book, and the video. Instead, a single rubric could focus on the fundaments of that skill, including whether the submission communicates an argument, whether that argument is supported by evidence, and so on.

Additionally, as great as student choice can be for enhancing motivation, it can also seem a bit daunting, even for the students. If you can, consider including some examples of different types of submissions. These can be created by you, found online, or include student examples pulled from similar assessments used in past courses (anonymized and used with permission, of course). Whatever the case, these examples can help students start to wrap their minds around the types of submissions that might work well for them.

Providing your students with choices in how they demonstrate their learning can have a profound impact on your online course. By employing the ideas suggested in this article, you open students to the possibility of creating artifacts that not only meet your course’s learning objectives, but help them meet their personal, academic, and career goals as well. With that in mind, here are a few takeaways from this article:

  • Student choice isn’t limited to assessments. UDL suggests that it can be incorporated into the fundamental elements in instructional design.
  • Design for the margins: There’s no such thing as an “average” student.
  • Students have a variety of learning preferences. To meet these with your assessments, consider broadening your learning objective or allowing students to choose the medium of their submission.

Reminder or Alert for Student Assignments Due Date

As we are learning through online classes for only God Knows till how long, is there any way the teacher could set up reminder for every assignments due date? For example like when we set up meeting and we put alert like 2 hours before or 10 mins before. Can the teacher do it for their assignments too? I've been so overwhelming with numbers of assignments my kids have to complete and tho we checked regularly, they somehow still missed one or two assignments.

Kindly assist.

Thank you for posting your question in this community. From your description, you would like to set up reminders for the assignment in Teams, so that the students can be reminded to submit their works on time before the due day.

I understand it will be much convenient for teachers and students to remind students to turn in their works. Unfortunately, Microsoft Teams for education cannot set up a reminder within Assignment at this moment. Some users also noticed this limitation and raised and idea about Reminder for assignments in Teams for Education UserVoice. If it is convenient, you can vote and subscribe this idea. As more and more users vote on this idea, it can let the related team be aware of this limitation and improve it in the future. Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

However, as you may know when you create a Classroom group in Microsoft Teams, a Microsoft 365 group will also be created with Outlook group mailbox Outlook group calendar. You may can take one more step to create an event in Outlook group calendar like the below screenshots show, which it can also remind the students to submit their works when the deadline is coming.

For your information:

How to Write an Effective Assignment

At their base, all assignment prompts function a bit like a magnifying glass—they allow a student to isolate, focus on, inspect, and interact with some portion of your course material through a fixed lens of your choosing.

The Key Components of an Effective Assignment Prompt

All assignments, from ungraded formative response papers all the way up to a capstone assignment, should include the following components to ensure that students and teachers understand not only the learning objective of the assignment, but also the discrete steps which they will need to follow in order to complete it successfully:

  • Preamble.  This situates the assignment within the context of the course, reminding students of what they have been working on in anticipation of the assignment and how that work has prepared them to succeed at it.
  • Justification and Purpose.  This explains why the particular type or genre of assignment you’ve chosen (e.g., lab report, policy memo, problem set, or personal reflection) is the best way for you and your students to measure how well they’ve met the learning objectives associated with this segment of the course.
  • Mission.  This explains the assignment in broad brush strokes, giving students a general sense of the project you are setting before them. It often gives students guidance on the evidence or data they should be working with, as well as helping them imagine the audience their work should be aimed at.
  • Tasks.  This outlines what students are supposed to do at a more granular level: for example, how to start, where to look, how to ask for help, etc. If written well, this part of the assignment prompt ought to function as a kind of "process" rubric for students, helping them to decide for themselves whether they are completing the assignment successfully.
  • Submission format.  This tells students, in appropriate detail, which stylistic conventions they should observe and how to submit their work. For example, should the assignment be a five-page paper written in APA format and saved as a .docx file? Should it be uploaded to the course website? Is it due by Tuesday at 5:00pm?

Submitting or resubmitting on behalf of a student

These directions are for the LTI 1.3 integration. If you are still using the LTI 1.1 integration, please refer to these directions as well. We have noted below where the two integrations' features differ. In addition, you might want to reach out to your LMS admin about updating to the LTI 1.3 integration.

The following information will help you submit or resubmit a student's paper to Turnitin through the LTI inbox. Before you proceed, we advise checking that the file you'd like to submit will be accepted.

With the LTI 1.1 integration, instructors can only resubmit on behalf of a student.

To resubmit on behalf of a student, please ensure that resubmissions are enabled for the assignment, that the student has already submitted to the assignment, and that the student's initial submission is visible in the Assignment Inbox.

If the assignment is set to anonymous, submitting on behalf of a student will not be possible in order to maintain anonymity.

How to Submit an Assignment on Canvas: the Assignment Submission

In today’s scenario, everyone prefers online working or online studying. Now everything is possible online. Because of the situation of COVID-19, the teachers are teaching their students from the online medium. They are giving lectures, taking tests, and giving the task of writing assignments, etc. Every student has to write assignments in their academic tenure. So they have to submit it online, but they don’t know about it. They think about how to submit an assignment on canvas (online).

Most teachers will ask you to make an assignment(a composition paper) on your computer in a word processing system (Microsoft Word) and then save the file to your computer (usually in My Documents).

Assignment help

Once the file saves on your computer, you can upload and send the document to a Canvas assignment page. Before submitting your assignment, it is necessary to review all of the teacher directions for every assignment page.

How to submit an assignment on canvas?

Table of Contents

Using multiple submission forms, you can submit online assignments on Canvas. Teachers may select which type of online submissions they would like you to utilize. If your teacher allows, you can also have the right to resubmit assignments.

Though, you can not remove the file after it has been submitted as a request. The files are save in the Submissions tab.

You may require to evaluate all assignment data, like the rubric assignment, if any, before submitting an assignment.

  • As part of your assignment, your teacher will include a rubric. The Rubric is a set of parameters that will be used by your teacher to evaluate your assignment. Before submitting your task, you can apply the Rubric to determine your work and to ensure that your assignment meets the criteria of your teacher.

This study demonstrates how to create a regular online assignment. See how to present an assignment on peer review.

  • Your teacher may request that you submit a peer review of the assignment to another student. To complete the assignment, you need to review the assignment of the student and add a review in the comment sidebar.
  • If the teacher uses a rubric, which is a planned framework of how the grade of an assignment will provide, the Rubric must be used by you to give a score. Your teacher may, however, also demand you to drop a comment in the comment sidebar.
  • Some peer reviews can also be anonymous, meaning you would not be able to see the name of the student whose assignment you study. Also, when you leave a comment to complete the review, the student can not see your name as the reviewer.

Submission of assignment through third-party file:

You can send tasks via your desktop computer from Dropbox, another third-party service, or Google Drive in one of two ways:

  • Download the data to your PC or present it as a file upload.

10 Useful Tips for Students to Submit Assignments on Time

submit assignment on time

We all have been on the receiving side of the terror that comes with running late to turn in your assignment. As a student, one of the most critical skills you can develop is submitting your assignments on time. Late submissions can result in lost grades, missed opportunities, and added stress, making it essential for students to understand the importance of timely submissions.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll share a wealth of tips and strategies that can help you ensure timely submissions and help you stay on top of your coursework -

1. Create a schedule

The first step in submitting assignments on time is to create a schedule. This can prove to be a useful step in the entire process. A schedule will help you keep track of your deadlines and plan your time accordingly. You can use a physical planner or a digital calendar, whichever works best for you. Make sure to include all of your assignments, exams, and other commitments in your schedule so that you have a clear understanding of how much time you have available.

2. Start timely

It is essential to start working on your assignments as early as possible. Waiting until the last minute to start your assignment can result in stress and decreased quality of work. By starting early, you’ll have enough time to review and refine your work, ensuring that you submit a high-quality assignment. Having said that, we understand and aren't too optimistic that balancing school life and homework can be a task. In that case, you can always start with the easy part so that it can create a sense of winning, which will eventually lead you to complete the entire assignment.

3. Break down tasks

Breaking down a large assignment into smaller tasks can make it seem more manageable and help you avoid procrastination. By setting deadlines for each of these tasks, you can keep yourself accountable and ensure that you’re making progress toward your end goal. Another way to go about it is to prioritize tasks based on their importance and urgency, making sure to complete the most critical tasks first.

One of the key benefits of breaking down tasks is increased productivity. When students are faced with a large and complex assignment, it can be easy to become overwhelmed and demotivated. However, by breaking the assignment down into smaller tasks, students can focus on one component at a time, making it easier to make progress and complete the assignment in a timely manner. This can help students to avoid procrastination and ensure that they are making progress toward their goals.

4. Use tools and resources

There are many tools and resources available to help students stay organized and on track. For example, you can use online citation generators to help you format your bibliography correctly or use productivity apps to stay focused and avoid distractions. Utilizing these tools and resources can save you time and help you submit your assignments on time. One such assignment help website is Desklib; here you can find study material and documents in abundance where as a student you can have access to help conveniently.

5. Ask for help

Don’t hesitate to reach out to your teachers, tutors, or classmates if you need help. They can provide you with valuable feedback and insights that can improve your work and ensure that you’re on the right track. Furthermore, if you’re struggling with a particular aspect of an assignment, seeking help can save you time and prevent you from making costly mistakes.

Asking for help is a critical aspect of student success, especially when it comes to completing class assignments. Whether students are struggling to understand a complex concept or need assistance with a specific task, seeking help can provide them with the support they need to succeed.

6. Manage your time effectively

Effective time management is necessary in order to turn in an assignment timely. When writing an assignment, make sure to allocate your time wisely and prioritize tasks based on their importance and urgency. This step can also help improve the quality of the final product. It is important to take regular breaks, review the work completed so far, and make any necessary revisions. By managing time effectively, it is possible to allocate sufficient time for these activities, ensuring that the final product is of the best possible quality.

7. Stay organized

Staying organized can also help to prioritize tasks and deadlines. When working on an assignment, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the many tasks and deadlines involved. However, by staying organized, it is possible to see the big picture and prioritize tasks in a way that ensures that everything is completed on time and to a high standard.

Make sure to keep all of your notes, materials, and other resources in one place so that you can easily access them when you need them. You can also use a filing system or an online storage solution to help you stay organized.

8. Set realistic goals

It’s important to set realistic goals for yourself when submitting assignments. While it’s great to strive for excellence, setting unrealistic goals can result in added stress and decreased productivity. Make sure to set achievable goals and focus on making progress towards your goals rather than striving for perfection.

9. Eliminate distractions

Distractions can have a significant impact on your productivity and ability to complete a task at hand. While working, make sure to eliminate distractions by creating a conducive environment for studying like turning off your phone, or using a noise-canceling app. I know this might sound and feel a bit tough at first but trust me, it only gets better from hereon. This step will get the work done effectively and timely.

10. Reward yourself

In the end, do not forget to pat yourself on the back. After having completed the assignment, it is equally important to reward yourself for your hard work and achievements.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, submitting your assignments on time is crucial for your academic success. We hope that we could help you a little by providing you with these tips. We hope that the above-given tips will help ensure that your work is completed to the best of your ability and submitted on time.

Remember, consistent effort and planning can go a long way in achieving your goals.

Late for Assignment Submission? Here's How to Write a Perfect Excuse Letter?

  • MyAssignmentHelpAu
  • 07 Feb 2022

In any organization, meeting a deadline for task submission is critical. The timely submission of needed work might affect a lot of work. This is most commonly applicable to businesses that rely on donations and must present a project report. Commercial companies are likewise highly concerned about deadlines, and employees are expected to fulfill them. On the other hand, employees are unable to achieve deadlines due to their delays.

If you fail to present your work on time, it may cause complications at work. You do not need to be concerned, though, because you may rectify the problem by sending an apology letter. Explain why you were late with your submission in your apology letter. As a guide, a Sample Apology Letter for Late Submission can make things clearer, smoother, and simpler. If you cannot write a letter on your own, it is recommended that you seek help from professionals who provide My Assignment Help Australia in letter writing.

How Do You Write a Perfect Late Assignment Excuse Letter?

1. address the correct individual.

The first thing you need to do is find out who you're writing to. Is it your professor, your department chair, or the university administration? Most institutions prefer to get letters from their heads of departments or the university administration. Start with courteous terms and the relevant mail address from your university's website. In the correspondence, provide a formal designation or name and your department and personal information.

2. Assume responsibility and write concisely

Your professors or the authorities for whom you are writing may be too busy to read the full account of your late submission owing to their hectic schedules. As a result, rather than writing in circles, it is recommended that you go right to the point. Begin your letter of apology for the late submission of the assignment by expressing your regret for being late. Instead of making excuses like the deadline were too tight or any other unimportant explanation, take responsibility for your actions and accept the blame. Keep in mind that your professor will not be pleased. It appears to be something you are compelled to do.

3. Take Personal Responsibility

Because all students have the same deadlines, each student must submit the assignment by the deadline, rather than waiting until the end and requesting extensions.

If you have a legitimate explanation or scenario for missing the deadline, take responsibility and accept responsibility for your actions, and do your best to resolve the issue. Present yourself as a serious, mature professional or student who knows his obligations.

4. Examine Some Reasons to Write an Excuse Letter for an Assignment

  • There's a problem with your Internet connection.
  • You assumed the deadline was flexible
  • You were ill suddenly
  • You had a family emergency
  • You battled with the issue for three days and realized you couldn't handle it
  • You lost electricity
  • You accidentally damaged your laptop
  • You required more time to review the evidence

5. Glue the Pieces of Evidence Together

It would not be adequate to merely write the reasons in an excuse letter for the late submission of assignments. You must, however, back it up with appropriate information so that your professors can confirm it. If you're writing about a family emergency, for example, don't forget to include the doctor's prescription with the letter.

Similarly, if you cannot submit your assignment due to scheduled job commitments, include a note from your employer. To make it more trustworthy, you may add verification sources such as people's names and contact information.

Finally, please accept my heartfelt apologies for this oversight. I will do all in my power to prevent this from happening again.

Best wishes,

[Include your complete name, class, and personal information]

Protocols to Follow When Writing an Apology Letter for Late Project Submission

When sending emails to your professors, you must adhere to etiquette since they demonstrate maturity and respect for your professor's time.

Turnitin no longer supports assignment submission upload on behalf of non-enrolled students

Sep 27, 2023 • knowledge article, information.

From September 26th, instructors can no longer upload assignment submissions on behalf of non-enrolled students. This particular workflow was accessible only to instructors using Turnitin via  turnitin.com  and  turnitinuk.com  or to those not utilizing a Learning Management System (LMS). This decision aims to simplify user account and license management.  Going forward, all submissions will require an association with an enrolled student. Instructors can still continue to submit on behalf of an enrolled student by following the guidance  here . Please view our instructor FAQs provided below:

How can I spot check a paper without having to add a student?

Within the Instructor homepage, you should have the option of "Quick Submit" where you can spot check a paper without the need for a student to be enrolled. To submit via Quick Submit, please see our guides  here . If you do not see the Quick Submit option, please activate it using our guides  here What happens if my student does not have access to an email account?

We recommend enrolling the student using a pseudo email address with the student’s name, school enrollment year and school name as an identifier e.g.  [email protected]  once enrolled in the class, this student will then show up in the drop-down to submit on behalf of the student. We recommend using the student's name and enrollment year as new students may enroll year-on-year with the same name. This helps keep the user unique. What can I do if my student is unable to enroll in the class before the assignment deadline?

As an instructor you can enroll the students in the class using  these  guides and make a submission on their behalf, please see  this  guidance.

What happens to submitted files that were not associated with an enrolled student that were made before September 26th?

Submissions made on behalf of non-enrolled students prior to September 26th will still be available. Note: If you need to increase your student license limit due to this change, the Turnitin account administrator at your institution will need to contact your Turnitin account manager.

Title: using large language models for student-code guided test case generation in computer science education.

Abstract: In computer science education, test cases are an integral part of programming assignments since they can be used as assessment items to test students' programming knowledge and provide personalized feedback on student-written code. The goal of our work is to propose a fully automated approach for test case generation that can accurately measure student knowledge, which is important for two reasons. First, manually constructing test cases requires expert knowledge and is a labor-intensive process. Second, developing test cases for students, especially those who are novice programmers, is significantly different from those oriented toward professional-level software developers. Therefore, we need an automated process for test case generation to assess student knowledge and provide feedback. In this work, we propose a large language model-based approach to automatically generate test cases and show that they are good measures of student knowledge, using a publicly available dataset that contains student-written Java code. We also discuss future research directions centered on using test cases to help students.

My recommendation is to add something at the end of the Quiz telling the student to message you/email you when they complete the final. Otherwise, you could add an assignment at the end, after the exam is completed, where the student submits something to the assignment stating that they are finished with the course.

  7. Addressing Student Choice in Assignment Submissions

Just like it can be important to give students a degree of choice in these assignment submissions, it's equally important to give students choice in how they set their goals.
