The present study was undertaken to examine livelihood improvement of small farmers through family poultry by income and employment generation. The data were collected from 60 family poultry farms families from two upazila of Mymensingh district through direct interview method. As analytical tools simple statistical measures, Cobb Douglas production function was used to observe the impact of explanatory variables on gross return while problem confrontation index (PCI) was calculated in order to ascertain the extent of severity of problems confronted by family poultry farmers. It was found that family poultry farming was chosen by 100% farmers as subsidiary occupation. Small farmers earned an income of Tk. 3705.95 per year as net return from family poultry farming and it generated on average 53.23 working man days per year as employment especially for women. As regards of livelihood improvement, family poultry farming changed food habit, increased knowledge and skill, savings, social status, recreational facility, improved food nutritional condition, family health and sanitation and enhanced women empowerment. Among the explanatory variables observed bird cost, feed cost, labor cost had positive and significant impact on gross return and impact of transportation & marketing cost was positive but insignificant. Outbreak of disease was found as the main setback in family poultry production.

This study aimed to determine the supply chain of Cemani chicken in Temanggung, Central Java, Indonesia. The method used in this study was survey method with purposive sampling and snowball sampling. Data in this study were analyzed descriptively. Results showed that there were 4 channels of the supply chain of Cemani chicken in Temanggung. Product flows from farmer to the customers. Information and financial flows from customer to the farmers. The most efficient marketing was direct market from farmer to customer (channel IV). This study suggests that farmers need to maximize the usage of social media as marketing media to expand the market. Improvement in shipping transportation also needed to decrease the mortality risk.
Poultry sector is an emerging industry in Nepal with two distinct pattern of poultry production-intensive and scavenging. The scavenging poultry is widely prevalent in the rural areas and nearly 45% of total poultry population comprises of native flock and 55% of poultry birds accounts of commercial poultry. In response to meet the urban demand for meat and egg, commercial poultry production is growing rapidly by more than three times in recent years (from 1985 to 2014). Poultry offers major advantages over other enterprises due to its low cost protein source, low generation interval, complementary role of poultry on other farming practices. In spite of its' potentiality, competition with human and other animal food sources, high cost of production, new disease challenges, low technical efficiency, lack of genetic improvement of economic traits of local breeds, adverse climatic condition due to climate change and unstable market for egg and meat are creating the major problem for sustainability. These constraints should be addressed with on farm research involving the middle class poultry producer along with others entrepreneurs with diversification of poultry industry, semi-intensive poultry farming , effective quarantine, adoption of low cost technology, food safety and food security with equal participation of stakeholders. Special emphasis should be given on research of locally feasible production technology, suitable poultry breeds and management. It gives new dimension towards poultry farming program in different clusters of Nepal. Moreover participatory response of poultry entrepreneur to program with priority to disease investigation, eradication and escorting poultry industry would be valuable.
Related research results and facts of indigenous chicken production in and out of Tigray region were reviewed with the aim of delivering information to the improved production and for the breeding plan of a region. The study revealed that there are various advantages which make poultry attractive in the context of poverty alleviation and quality protein supply in Tigray region. The study also showed that there are three major production systems such as village or backyard poultry production system, small scale poultry production system and commercial poultry production system. The common production system used was mostly extensive type that is characterized by small flock sizes; it needs no or less inputs and a periodic devastation of the flock by diseases. As a conclusion, government and non government organization should enhance the private sector to engage in poultry feed production, supplying watering, feeding and hatching materials. Government should be developing the community based disease diagnosis and proactive protection and control options .Government should be strengthen the local private/public drugs/vaccine supplier and services providers. Abstract- Survey on rural chicken production system was conducted in three peasant associations of Haramaya Woreda of Oromia regional state to generate information on the problems and constraints emending the developments of their community with particular emphasis on poultry production and to list the possible opportunities and strategies that could solve these problems. A total of 120 households were used for the survey work. Finally, all the data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. About 77.5% of all the respondents share family dwellings with poultry, attributed to the small flock size, low priority given to chicken and relatively high cost of poultry house construction. The results obtained clearly showed that poultry diseases are widely spread in the Woreda and farmers pointed out that, Newcastle Disease, fowl cholera; respiratory diseases and predators are responsible for the major losses of birds in the study sites. Almost all the respondents reported poultry and poultry product market price fluctuation attributed to limitation in land holding, disease occurrence and low purchasing power of the consumers. About 100% of the respondents reported to keep different classes of chicken together, the practice of which facilitates transmission of diseases. In summary the results of this study tends to indicate that production performance of indigenous chicken is low under traditional production practice and need to be improved.

This study was carried out with the objective to find reasons for high indigenous chicken populations and get an in depth understanding of the characteristics of village chicken production. The study was carried out in Yoeseltse and Denchhukha blocks under Samtse District. Thirty-eight households in Denchhukha and 39 households in Yoeseltse were randomly sampled and a semi-structured questionnaire survey was conducted. SPSS 16.0 was used for data analysis. Descriptive statistics, chi square test and ANOVA were used. Indigenous chickens virtually make up the chicken flocks in the villages in both Denchhukha and Yoeseltse. Chickens were reared under scavenging system in both the blocks. Chickens provided households with meat and eggs for consumption, household necessities such as grains through barter and with cash income. In Denchhukha, chickens were reared for dual-purpose. In Yoeseltse, it was mainly for eggs in Buddhist communities and for dual-purpose in Hindu communities. The average flock size in Yoeseltse egg production system was significantly lower (P<0.05) than those in Denchhukha and Yoeseltse dual-purpose production. Forty-three percent of the respondents preferred to continue rearing indigenous chickens while 13% said that they want to try rearing exotic chickens with indigenous chickens. Predation and diseases were the major constraints in rearing the existing flocks. These diseases are usually treated with traditional methods which are quite effective when detected early. Inadequate feed was the most important hindrance to increase their flock size. The reasons for preference of these farmers for indigenous chickens under scavenging system are thus obvious. Any interventions in poultry sector should give due consideration of the constraints faced by the farmers.

This study aimed to understand the importance of village poultry systems and explore improvement options in Bhutan. Two geogs (sub-districts)- Yoeseltse and Denchhukha under Samtse dzongkhag (district) were selected for this study. It employed a group meeting in Denchhukha and involved four key informants in each geog to understand the livelihoods and access to services and resources for the village households. Thirty-eight households in Denchhukha and 39 households in Yoeseltse were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire on poultry rearing and production. The VIPOSIM simulation model was used to test different improvement options and were compared to the base situation. The two long sides are provided a one-foot high wall with a 60° inside slope at the top. The partition wall specification is like that of sidewalls. The remaining 51 height is covered with 111 G.1. 12 gauge chain link mesh throughout except at the doors. There will be 31 overhangs of roofs at eves. The doors are made up of an M. S. angle frame and 111 X 31 I mesh of 10
gauge thickness, with provision to lock from both sides. The two sides are made up of solid brick wall. Roof structure is built by seasoned wood and tiles. The house is provided with 3 phase power supply.
(iii) Other buildings
The feed room, store and workers, quarters will have brick side walls to the full height.
