* Adds one year to the domain (see notes below)

Domain Name Transfer Notes

All .nz domain transfers are free. Most domain name transfers include one year registration, meaning that when you transfer the domain you get a year registration included. For .nz domains, the expiration date remains the same after transfer. For generic (gTLD) domain names this adds an additional year to the actual expiration date, but for most ccTLDs, a transfer resets the expiration date to the transfer date plus 1 year.

For all .uk domain transfers, at the time of the transfer request, we will pre-authorize the full cost (two year renewal price). For .uk transfers where the domain has more than 3 months remaining on the domain expiration, the transfer will be FREE. For .uk transfers where the domain is within 3 months or less of its renewal date, the domain will be renewed for 2 years upon transfer and a charge for two year’s renewal will be made.

An example of a generic (gTLD) domain name transfer: mygenericdomain. com (actual expiration date: 2023-11-23), after the transfer the new expiration date for the domain will be 2024-11-23.

Example of a ccTLD domain name transfer: mycctlddomain. de (actual expiration date: 2023-11-24), after the transfer the new expiration date for the domain will be the date that the transfer occurred plus 1 year.

Domain FAQs

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a unique name that can be used to identify and access your website on the Internet. It is also used as your email address – the name to the right of the @ sign in the email address. For example, createhosting.co.nz is the domain name for this website and [email protected] is one of the email addresses for this website.

What does it mean to register a domain name?

The Internet Domain Name System (DNS) consists of a directory, organised hierarchically, of all the domain names and their corresponding computers registered to particular companies and persons using the Internet. When you register a domain name, it will be associated with the computer on the Internet you designate (the DNS information) during the period that the registration is in effect. It is just like registering a car.

Who can register a domain name?

Anyone over the age of 18, or a registered company can register a domain name. Some domain extension have specific criteria. Please see our Domain Pricing page for a full breakdown.

What characters can a domain name contain?

Domain names may only contain lowercase a-z, 0-9, and the – (hyphen) character. A hyphen may not begin or end a domain name. Domain names can be up to 63 characters long, excluding the extensions. Domain names should be in lowercase, but are not case-sensitive.

Oops, I made a spelling mistake - can I get a refund?

If you make a mistake with a .nz name you can contact us within 5 days to cancel the domain name and receive a refund/credit from the respective registry. All other extensions such as .com will be subject to standard charging; the domain name registration fees are non-refundable and the registration period cannot be cancelled or shortened. When the registration period is over you can choose not to renew. Please be careful!

How long does it take before my domain name shows up on the internet?

For all .nz domains, generic (gTLD) domains (.com, .org, .net, .biz, .info, .us) and some ccTLD domain names (.ca, .tw, .jp, .in, .cn, .co.uk), registration is instantaneous. Other domains can take a few hours to a few days to register, depending on the complexity and what supporting documentation is required. New domains and changes to domains can take up to two days to become effective because of the number of networks involved, and the fact that those networks are controlled by several different agencies. This delay applies to all domains and all Registrars, and not just Create Hosting. It has to do with the way domains work and is unfortunately unavoidable.

Please allow for this delay when planning websites or configuring a domain to work with your email. For a .nz domain name, the name may only take a few minutes or hours to propagate through and be available for use.

Who is the owner of the domain name?

A domain name is not actually owned but rather it is licensed for use for the duration of the registration period. The legal owner of a domain name is the individual or organisation whose name is listed at the time of registration as the Registrant Contact. These contact details are made publicly available in a public “whois” database which is provided by registrars and/or the registry for the domain. The owner or registrant remains the owner of a domain name regardless of whether the administrative contact has been changed since then.

What if somebody else registered my domain name in their name?

If you believe you are entitled to a particular domain name, for example if you own a suitable trademark, or if there is a dispute regarding the registration of a domain name, you can either take legal action against the current registrant of the domain name, or for .nz domain names, you can take advantage of the Dispute Resolution Service provided by the Office of the Domain Name Commissioner. For more information on the Dispute Resolution Service, and to lodge an online complaint, go to www.dnc.org.nz/drs .

What do I need to do before transferring a domain to Create Hosting?

If you are transferring an existing domain name that is currently being used for website or email, these services can break. To ensure continuity of services, you should prepare your domain name for transfer. If you have access to the SOA preferences for the domain name, set the TTL (time to live) to a low value like 60 seconds. You will need to do this about 24 hours in advance of the proposed transfer, as most domains have a TTL of 24 hours. You will also need to determine your existing email configuration so that you can set this up on your new server once the domain name transfer has been initiated, so that you will be able to receive email. Do not cancel any existing services with your current registrar/host until a few days after the transfer, and when you are certain that it has been successful.

Please be sure to contact us beforehand if you are concerned and would like assistance. We do this all the time and are happy to help ensure a smooth transfer.

What is a UDAI?

A UDAI (Unique Domain Authentication ID) is a randomly generated eight digit code consisting of numbers and letters in upper and lower case. A UDAI is unique to each .nz domain name and is required to authenticate requests to transfer a domain from one registrar to another. This needs to be obtained from your current registrar for authorisation (which they must provide without charge or delay). When a new UDAI is generated, it can ONLY be sent to the email address listed in the Registrant Contact details for the domain name.

What is an EPP or Authorisation Code?

Like the UDAI, the EPP Code is basically a password for a domain name (applies to .com, .net, .org domain names). It is a security measure, ensuring that only the domain name owner can transfer a domain name. You will need it if you are wanting to transfer the domain to another registrar or when transferring to Create Hosting. This needs to be obtained from your current registrar for authorisation. It can ONLY be sent to the email address listed as the Administrative Contact for the domain name.

Can I register and host a domain with Create Hosting but point to another server?

Absolutely, you can either point your domain to another host’s nameservers or you can take advantage of our Advanced DNS Management functionality to control the domain name records (such as the A records, CNAME records, MX records and SRV records).

What are your nameserver details?

We use geographically dispersed DNS nameservers for redundancy.

Our Name Servers are as follows:

Master (Primary) Name Server Name: ns1.createhosting.net.nz Master (Primary) Name Server IP: 66.199.228.130 Slave (Secondary) Name Server Name: ns2.createhosting.net.nz Slave (Secondary) Name Server IP: 103.6.213.71 Additional Name Server Name: ns3.createhosting.net.nz Additional Name Server IP: 206.123.113.132 Additional Name Server Name: ns4.createhosting.net.nz Additional Name Server IP: 85.13.216.100

What is local presence?

Some ccTLD’s require a “local presence” in order to register a domain in that country. As a non-resident, we can assist you in protecting your brand by allowing you to still register your domain using a pre-arranged local presence contact. You remain the full registrant contact for the domain.

How do I transfer a .co.uk or .org.uk domain?

Because .uk transfers are a push/pull process, you must initiate a transfer request AND submit a request to the losing registrar. Contact your current registrar and request to retag the domain name to the IPS tag ENOM. This starts the transfer away process.

It does not matter the order in which the requests are submitted, however, if you initiate the transfer first, you must submit the request to the losing registrar within one week . If initiating the request to the losing registrar first, you must initiate your transfer with Create Hosting by either the 8th of current month or the 8th of the following month, whichever is closest to the current date.

Please note: .uk domains don’t use authorization codes or registrar locks.

When can I transfer my .nz domain to Create Hosting?

A .nz domain name cannot be transferred within 5 days of the initial registration. In some cases you can request a cancellation and refund of any registration fees from your current registrar if still within the 5 day grace period. Please contact your current registrar if you wish to do so.

When can I transfer my .com .net .org domain to or away from Create Hosting?

A .com /.net /.org domain name cannot be transferred within 60 days of the initial registration date or from the date that it was transferred, unless transferring back to the original registrar.

What happens to a domain when it expires?

When a domain expires it becomes inactive immediately, and all the services attached to it, such as a website and/or email cease to function since the domain name no longer resolves. Domains will then enter into a “Grace Period”, a “Domain Redemption” or “Pending Release” status.

The “Grace Period” is between 0 and 45 days, and often does not have any additional costs associated with it. Domain names can still be renewed at the regular rate.

The “Domain Redemption” or “Pending Release” status is the status that most domains enter if they are not renewed during the grace period. Domains can still be recovered / renewed while in this state (providing it hasn’t been auctioned off) by paying a redemption fee plus the regular renewal cost for the domain. If the domain is not recovered from this status, the domain is typically released to the public for re-registration.

Please note that the restoration process is very costly, both in terms of fees and effort and the restoration fee is charge by the respective registry accordingly.

.co.nz, .org.nz, .net.nz and .nz domains

The domain will immediately go into a Pending Release status (deactivated) for 90 days. The domain will be available for reactivation during the period by the original owner. If the domain is not reactivated within this period it will be deleted from the registry and released back into the ‘pool’ for anyone to purchase as a new domain. There will be an additional charge of NZD$7.50 to reactivate the domain whilst in a Pending Release status.

.com.au, .net.au, .org.au domains

The domain name becomes inactive and enters into what is known as “serverUpdateProhibited” and “serverHold” status for 30 days, during which time the domain name can still be renewed. However, if the domain is not reactivated within this period, an Australian domain name is deleted from the .au registrar on the next business day and is available to be registered by any eligible party. There will be an additional charge of NZD$7.50 to reactivate the domain whilst in a “serverUpdateProhibited” and “serverHold” status. After 30 days, there will be an additional registrar charge of approx. NZD$165 to reactivate the domain name.

.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .us, .ca, .cn, .co, .co.uk, .eu, .in and .tw domains

The domain will remain available for reactivation at your regular domain rate during a grace period of up to 29 days. The grace period is not guaranteed and once a domain expires, it may be disposed of at any time according to the registration agreement.

After the grace period lapses, the domain may then go into a Redemption Grace Period. A redemption grace period can be between 30 and 90 days, and there will be an additional charge of up to USD$250 (depending on domain extension) to reactivate the domain during this time. If the domain is not recovered within this time it will be deleted by the registry and it will become available for anyone to purchase as a new domain.

.tw domain names will be suspended and fall into a 30 day renewal grace period if not renewed before the expiry date. After approximately 33 days from the expiry date, it will be released for public re-registration.

For .jp domains, they MUST to be renewed 10 days before the expiration date and no renewal can be done after that date. At the end of the month of the renewal date, the domain will no longer resolve.

After a further period of 30 days (i.e., the beginning of the following month, the domain will be deleted by the .jp registry). It MAY be possible to recover the domain within the first 20 days of this 30 day period, however there will be an additional charge of up to USD$250 per domain in order to recover and renew the domain during this time.

.at, .be, .ch, .cz, .de, .dk, .fr, .gr, .hk, .hu, .ie, .it, .nl, .no, .pl, .pt, .ru, and .se domains

The domain will go into quarantine. Depending on the registry policy, the remaining days to reactivate the domain vary from one TLD to another. Again depending on the registry policy, the quarantine will be composed of one or all of the periods below:

– Reactivation period: during this phase, the former domain holder can reconsider the expiration of his domain and request for it to be reactivated. This period begins 60 days before the official domain expiry date.

– Restore period: the domain is usually moved to the registry. At this time, the former domain holder can still recover his domain. In this case, the domain will be restored by the registry. You will need to contact our support team to get your domain restored.

– Pending delete: during this phase, the domain cannot be reactivated or restored. The domain will be definitely scheduled for deletion from the registry database.

Domains reactivated or restored during the “Reactivation or Restore” period will incur a 25€ administration fee, plus any additional fees imposed by the registrar.

What do I need to know about transferring a .co.nz (*.nz) domain name?

There are no transfer fees for .nz domain names. Your annual renewal fee will be billed on the anniversary date of your original registration. A domain name cannot be transferred within 5 days of the initial registration. A valid domain name UDAI / EPP Code is required and can be obtained from your current registrar upon request (at no charge). A .nz domain name can be transferred away from your current registrar up to 89 days after expiry.

What do I need to know about transferring a generic gTLD domain?

For generic (gTLD) domain names (.com, .net, .org, .info, .biz & .us) there are no transfer fees, however you are required to register the domain for 1 additional year at the time of transfer which is added onto your existing registration period. The owner contact information with your existing Registrar must be current, as an email confirmation will be sent to that email address. A valid EPP Key (Authorization Code) is required and can be obtained from your current registrar (often via your registrar’s control panel). You should also ensure that the domain name is “unlocked”, to allow the transfer to proceed. A gTLD domain name cannot be transferred within 60 days of the initial registration.

Transferring a ccTLD Domain

Requirements for ccTLD domains (e.g. .asia, .com.au, .tw, .sg, etc) differ widely, so let us take care of the process for you. Simply place your order and we’ll let you know if any further information is needed. If your domain transfer is unsuccessful, we’ll refund any fees paid in full.

Will the registration period change when I transfer my domain?

For .nz domain transfers, your registration period will remain the same. You will not be out of pocket by transferring your domain before its expiry.

For generic (gTLD) domain names,  an additional year is added to the actual expiration date, but for most ccTLDs, a transfer resets the expiration date to the transfer date plus 1 year.

About domain registration...

Your domain name is your address on the internet. Most companies register a domain using their company name, or an abbreviation of it, so their customers can find them easily online. Domain names are unique; once you have registered yours, nobody else can use it.

The exception is that if you register yourcompanyname.co.nz, it’s possible for somebody else to register yourcompanyname.com or similar. Therefore, for brand protection reasons, it is often worthwhile registering a few different domain extensions, particularly if any of them are especially relevant to your brand (e.g. .café for cafes).

Domainz gives you access to more than 200 different domain name extensions worldwide.

Choosing a domain name

Using your business or brand name makes perfect sense. If your business name isn't available, consider choosing keywords that represent your business or product. Purchasing your domain name as soon as possible prevents it being registered by a competitor or speculator. Consider registering one domain name with multiple extensions (like co.nz .com, .com.au), or take a look at international domain name options like .co.uk.

Things to consider

Is the name you want easy to spell?

If your brand name is often misspelled, you can register common mistakes and simply redirect the traffic to your main website. For example, vodaphone.co.nz redirects to vodafone.co.nz.

Is it short and easy to remember?

A nickname or abbreviation might be used most often by your customers, for example amex.co.nz or coke.com. Sometimes initials will work best - like bnz.co.nz for Bank of New Zealand.

Is it easily differentiated?

If you don't have a well-known brand, or your business/product name is too much like another company's, a 'generic' address may be a good choice e.g. auckland-plumbing.co.nz

Where are your key markets?

If you have customers in specific national markets, consider registering domain names in those markets e.g. .com.au in Australia, .cn in China etc.

How to Buy a Domain in New Zealand

Whether you’re a Kiwi or an international reader, buying a domain in New Zealand isn’t as daunting as it sounds. You see, it’s quite like buying a sheep in the Shire – except you won’t have to worry about shearing or feeding your domain.

I’m a Local Resident in New Zealand, Looking to Buy a Domain.

So, you’re a Kiwi looking to buy a NZ domain name . Then get ready to claim your own piece of the web. First things first, you’ll need to choose your domain name. Make sure it’s catchy, easy to remember, and represents you or your business accurately – it needs to leave a lasting impression.

Once you’ve got the perfect web address in mind, you’ll need to check its availability. Simply type in your chosen name and see if it’s up for grabs.

If not, don’t panic! Remember, every rejection is a chance to be more creative. Also, there are several other New Zealand domain extensions (TLDs) you could choose, so if yourbusiness.co.nz is already taken, why not try yourbusiness.net.nz or .org.nz instead?

Now, if your chosen domain is available, it’s time to proceed with the domain name registration. Follow the check-out flow just as you would do buying shoes online and within no time, you’ll be the proud owner of your own New Zealand domain.

I’m a Resident Outside of New Zealand, Looking to Buy a .co.nz Domain.

Just because you’re not local doesn’t mean you can’t get your hands on a .co.nz domain . You see, buying a domain as an expat is like trying to understand cricket – it may seem complicated at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a piece of cake. So, how exactly does a non-resident go about building a .co.nz online presence?

Step 1: Choose a Domain Name

Similarly to locals, the first step is to find a name for your new website. But remember, if you’re targeting Kiwis, it might be worth incorporating a bit of local flavour. Do a .co.nz domain search to see if you can claim your desired domain name.

Pro tip: If your first choice isn’t available, consider a variation. Just because stunningviews.co.nz is taken, doesn’t mean amazingscenery.co.nz won’t work just as well.

Step 2: Register the Domain

Once you’ve chosen your domain name registrar (hopefully OnlyDomains ), it’s time to register your domain. You’ll need to provide your details, choose a payment method, and pay the fee. And voila, you’re now part of the New Zealand web community.

Conclusion

Whether you’re a local or just an international aficionado of our beautiful country, this guide should have given you the run-down on how to register your truly New Zealand domain name.

Remember the steps: choose your domain, check its availability, and then register your domain . Following this guide, and you’ll already be well on your way to becoming a full-fledged domain owner. Good on ya!

What are the conditions to register a .nz domain name.

There is no specific procedure related to the registration of a domain name. .NZ domain names are allocated on a "first come, first served" basis.

How do I transfer my .nz domain name to Netim?

In order to transfer your domain name to Netim, you must disable transfer protections and obtain the authorisation code from your current Registrar. The transfer may take several days. When the transfer is finalised, a year is added to the expiry date of the domain name .

How do I proceed to change the owner of my .nz domain name?

To change the holder, you must first go through an authentication process. To that end, validation emails will be sent to both current and future domain holders. After a period of 5 days, the request will be cancelled. The domain expiration date is not affected by the transfer process .

Which IDN characters are accepted by the .nz extension ?

The .nz extension does not support special characters.

Netim is an accredited registrar

By choosing an accredited Registrar, you avoid middlemen which in turn gives you access to lower prices and makes domain registration, as well as other operations, quicker.

The minimum length of a domain name with this extension is 2 characters, and the maximum length is 63. Often a short, clear domain name is considered more effective, as it will be easier for visitors to your site to remember.

Some domain names in this extension are premium, which means that they do not have the same value in the eyes of the registry offering them, they may be domain names with few characters, or special terms that are easy to remember. Premium domain names can be registered at a special price.

The nz extension does not support special characters.

Whoisprivacy allows you to keep your personal information normally displayed in the Whois database private.

DNSSEC ensures the authenticity of the DNS response. When your browser tries to reach a website, it communicates a secret authentication key that certifies that the IP address returned is that of the site you wish to reach.

Manage your domains

How to manage your domain names using the government DNS Management Portal, transfer non-.govt.nz domains to the government DNS nameservers, and get support.

Domain Name Service (DNS) Management Portal

The government DNS Management Portal makes it easy to manage your domain names 24/7. You can:

  • apply for a domain name
  • manage the zone data for your domain names hosted on the government nameservers
  • update WHOIS data for all your domain names
  • de-register a domain name.

DNS Management Portal

Access the Portal

To get access to the Portal you’ll need to:

  • understand and assess the risks outlined in the Service Security Certificate
  • choose who in your organisation will sign up to get access to the Portal
  • provide the Domain Name Service Team with details for each user, or for the person who will manage user accounts for others in your organisation.

Note:  Accounts must be named users, and must not be shared.

To learn more about security certification and get access to the Portal, contact the Domain Name Service Team .

There are 2 user roles in the Portal:

  • AGENCYSUPER (super user)
  • AGENCYUSER (agency user).
  • can manage zones and request domains
  • should have a good understanding of the Domain Name System (DNS), and related technology.

Super users:

  • can create and edit other users
  • should be permanent employees of your organisation.

Help using the Portal

On-boarding.

The ‘On-boarding to the DNS Management Portal guide’ covers how to set up your account and on-board the rest of your team.

Manage your zones with the DNS API

A secure Application Programming Interface (API) is available via the DNS Management Portal for managing your zones.

You can use the API to make automated updates or delegate access to your zones on a per-domain basis.

To enable API access for your organisation, contact the Domain Name Service Team to talk about setting up one of your users as an API administrator.

Transferring domains to the government domain nameservers

If your government organisation is using non-.govt.nz domains (like .co.nz) or has .govt.nz domains hosted by other DNS nameservers, they can be migrated onto the government DNS nameservers.

This allows you to manage both non-.govt.nz and .govt.nz domains in the same place and have the same security benefits, like Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC).

Domains renew automatically, so there’s no risk of them being forgotten about or released for open registration.

How to transfer

To transfer non-.govt.nz and .govt.nz domains, contact the Domain Name Service Team .

For non-govt.nz domains, you’ll need to provide:

  • the zone file
  • the domain’s Unique Domain Authentication Identifier (UDAI)
  • a time and date to make the change.

For .govt.nz domains, you’ll need to provide:

Check contact details

This is also a good time to make sure the contact details for these types of domains are correct. For example, make sure that the domain is properly registered on behalf of your organisation, and not under the name of an employee or vendor.

International domains

While the government DNS Management Portal can provide services for all domains within the .nz space (such as .nz, .co.nz, .org.nz, and so on), international domains like .com or .org are not supported.

Liverton Security manages the government DNS Management Portal. They can help you use the Portal and give you advice on making DNS changes, as well as perform bulk changes.

This support is available 24/7, however charges apply outside of business hours.

Business hours:  8.30am to 5pm , Monday to Friday.

You will not be charged for the following services:

  • domain nameserver hosting
  • access to the DNS Management Portal
  • help and advice regarding the Portal during business hours.

If you need urgent support or manual changes made outside business hours, Liverton Security will charge your organisation directly.

  • Hourly rate: $145
  • Fixed rate: $12 for each change.

Contact Liverton Security

You can contact Liverton Security by phone on 0800 536 7999 (NZ only).

They will ask for your security question to authenticate your identity. If they cannot authenticate your identity, you’ll be referred to the Domain Name Service Team at the Department of Internal Affairs.
