Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other electrical contractor businesses.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes in-house electricians and homeowners who do minor electrical work themselves. You need to mention such competition as well.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide a wider array of services?
  • Will you provide special discounts or perks for returning customers?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.  

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For an electrical contractor business plan, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of electrical contracting business that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to installing traditional electrical systems, will you also install smart home control systems or fire and security systems?

Income Statement : an income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you work on 1 project at a time or will you oversee multiple projects at any given time? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets : Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your electrical contractor business, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing an electrical contractor business:

How to Organize Paperwork for Business

We must all be efficient and productive in today's business world. Being organized helps you handle tasks quickly so that you have more time and space to do what you truly want to do.

1. One-time mail system.

Have an In Box on your desk for new mail/information. Look at your mail once a day. Review each piece of mail once to decide whether to do it, delegate it or dump it. If it adds value to your business or is required for doing business, do it or delegate it. If not, then dump it. If you keep it, then categorize it using the A, B, C system. Use your time wisely.

2. Categories for performing your work.

Set up desk trays labeled A, B, and C. Items in category A must be handled today. Category B items must be handled this week. Category C items are generally filing that must be kept because they have some value, such as invoices, tax returns, and statements.

3. Prioritize your work within categories A and B.

Sort the categories into 1, 2, and 3. A1 must be done NOW, it is "hot" or "urgent." A2 can be done this AM. A3 can be done by the end of the day. B1 is done on Monday. B2 done by Wednesday. B3 done by the end of the week. Make the decision once, then do the work.

Set a day and time each week for filing. Don't let it stack up. Give yourself space to work.

5. Purge your files on a regular schedule.

For example, purge files every six months. Send these documents to storage. This gives you more space to work.

6. Storing records.

Store documents in boxes. Mark the contents of each box. For instance, clients A-F2013. Mark the destruction date on the box, D = June 02. Base your destruction date on the legal requirements for your industry.

7. Toss out stored documents on a regular schedule.

For example, two times per year, visit the storage area and remove boxes that are beyond the destruction date. Depending on your industry, they may need to be shredded rather than put in the trash.

8. Color code your records.

For example, clients with first names beginning with A-F are in Orange folders; G-K Yellow; L-P Blue; Q-Z Green. This will save you time when you are searching for a file. You can also apply this to AP, AR, Payroll, and Taxes. This can also be done by year. For example, 2012 AP is blue; 2013 AP is purple.

9. Hot files.

Put a red cover on files that you consider "hot." These could be urgent projects, legally or financially sensitive, or important VIP clients. Keep these visually at your fingertips.

10. Use out guides.

If you work with other people and share files, create a check-out system so that files are not lost. Put the file name, taken-by name, and date on a card and place it in an out guide box. When you can't find what you want, check the box to see if your co-worker is using the file. Be sure to remove the card from the box when you return the file.

Starting an electrical contracting business is challenging, even for experienced electricians. We asked two Canadian sparkies, Simon Noone and Ben Morin, to share their tips—both went out on their own after working for other contractors. Noone started his company, Tried and True Electric, six years ago in Wallacetown, Ontario. Morin launched Amped Electric, which operates in Brandon, Manitoba, in 2015.

5 tips for getting the business going

  • Consider whether you want to go solo or work with a business partner. Although many electrical contractors run companies on their own, “a partner gives you freedom and flexibility to take a vacation or time off if your family needs you.” says Noone. A good partner, he says, can share the load and help you build a stronger business.
  • Make sure a partner’s values are aligned with your own. Before signing any legal agreements or writing a business plan, Noone and his business partner talked to each other at length. They both wanted to be sure they understood—and shared—each other’s work ethic, quality standards, and vision for the business’s future.
  • Know your limits and get the business help you need. “I trained as an electrician, not as a bookkeeper or accountant,” says Morin. Working in the trades, he says, means you should understand when to call in an expert rather than trying to do everything yourself.
  • Develop business systems, whether for dealing with paperwork and record-keeping, for prompt quoting and invoicing, or for handling customer inquiries. Staying organized and working efficiently is necessary for business success, both electricians agree.
  • Be financially prepared for a rough start. Noone and his partner set aside enough money to cover at least the first year’s expenses. “Between buying a vehicle, paying for materials, and payroll—we hired an apprentice right away—money was going out faster that it was coming in. It wasn’t until the 11th month when we could pay ourselves.” But that moment, he adds, reassured him the business was going to succeed.

3 tips for maintaining positive customer and supplier relations

  • Build long-term relationships with suppliers . Noone says he depends on suppliers to have high-quality materials in stock, to price materials fairly and consistently so he can quote accurately, and to stand behind what they sell—now and in the future. “We deal with Schneider Electric almost exclusively for panels now, and we really depend on Homeline arc fault breakers. Some other arc fault breakers experience a lot of nuisance tripping, which can cost an electrician a lot in call backs just to replace one small part.”
  • Address customer issues quickly. Most customers, says Morin, will be reasonable when they know what’s going on. “Even when there were supply chain issues during the pandemic, for example, Schneider addressed our questions in a timely manner, which meant we could keep our customers informed—and happy.”
  • Document every change order. When customers ask for extras, “put it in writing and get clients to sign off on it,” says Noone. Homeowners don’t know when a seemingly simple request adds a lot of expense. If you haven’t documented changes, he says, be prepared to face objections when you invoice. “No one likes surprises, and every client absolutely has the right to question what’s on an invoice,” he adds, “so you need backup to help them understand your charges.”

4 tips for managing stress

  • Practise the tough stuff. “Chasing after payments and dealing with confrontational clients—those are things I don’t enjoy,” Noone says. “But over time I’ve learned how to do it.” As well, organized business systems, complete documentation, and clear communications make it easier to deal with many issues.
  • Learn to unplug. Morin says it took a while, but he learned to leave the stress of running a business at the office. “Now, when I get home, I sometimes imagine a coat rack inside the door. I take my work hat off, and I put my family guy hat on.”
  • Don’t forget that you do have a backup plan . For electricians in many job markets, Morin says, there’s enough demand that “it’s relatively easy to go back and work for someone else.” That safety net can make taking the leap and starting an electrical contracting business a little easier.
  • Remember your why. For both Noone and Morin, when business is especially challenging, they see family as a motivation for working hard at building a business and a support system when they need it. Noone says his employees and their families also motivate him. “We want our employees to feel like they’re building a company with us. As we grow, we want them to grow too.” Both electricians recommend taking stock of the business’s developments. “I like looking back at where I started,” says Morin. “The time went so fast, but seeing the business and the projects we do come to fruition puts a smile on my face.”

Electrical Engineering has long played a critical role in undergirding innovations that improve the quality of life, support economic growth, and address societal problems. Electrical Engineering plays a pivotal role in power and energy distribution, communications, and computation, even with the evolution of power-carrying channels from metal cables to nanowires or optical fibers; networks of communications from wires to wireless to neurons; and basic electrical switches from vacuum tubes to transistors to carbon nanotubes. 

At Harvard College, students choose a "concentration," which is what we call a major. All prospective undergraduate students, including those intending to study engineering and applied sciences, apply directly to  Harvard College . During your sophomore spring you’ll declare a concentration, or field of study. You may choose from 50 concentrations and 49 secondary field (from  Harvard DSO website ).

The Electrical Engineering concentration spans a broad range of topics, ranging from the physics of new materials and devices, the circuits and next-generation computing platforms made from these devices, and the algorithms that run on these platforms. The range of subtopics includes power systems, (micro) electronics, control systems, signal processing, telecommunications, and computing systems. Students learn how to analyze, design and build devices and systems for computation, communication and information transfer.

Students can pursue a degree with an emphasis in electrical engineering through the following concentrations:

  • S.B. in Electrical Engineering
  • A.B. in Engineering Sciences - Electrical and Computer Engineering Track

Students in either degree program take many of the same upper-level EE courses. The A.B. program affords the flexibility to pursue complementary studies in other disciplines or to dive deeper into a specific sub-discipline of EE, while the S.B. program provides a broader basis in engineering fundamentals with courses from other engineering areas and design.

Electrical Engineering Bachelor of Science (S.B.)

The undergraduate EE curriculum emphasizes both depth and breadth within the sub-disciplines of electrical engineering.  All students will specialize in electronic circuits and devices while being provided the opportunity explore signals and systems theory, control systems, robotics, optoelectronic devices, integrated circuits, energy systems, computer vision, electronic materials, computer software and hardware, as well as mechanical, biological, and environmental systems.  Through this coursework, students also gain experience in the engineering design process, the engineering activity that requires creative synthesis as well as analysis.

Day 6 of storm recovery in houston: here’s your power outage update, wednesday evening, 30,839 people were without power and more than 90-percent of outages had been restored.

CenterPoint Energy expects to have power back on to just about everyone by Wednesday evening.

  • As of 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, 30,839 customers did not have power
  • More than 890,000 customers who lost power last Thursday have had it restored

UPDATE: As of 9:30 p.m. CT, the company has restored 97% or more than 890,000 customers impacted by the May 16 severe storm across its service territory, which represents 99% of all customers. Any remaining outages after this evening will be predominantly isolated instances in certain locations where there is substantial damage or where customers are unable to receive power. CenterPoint has and will continue to have the workers and resources needed to address these remaining outages as safely and quickly as possible.

In some cases, new outages may be attributable to service issues that periodically occur on CenterPoint’s system and are unrelated to the May 16 weather event, such as a vehicle accident resulting in a downed pole and wires. In the past 24 hours, CenterPoint has experienced more than 5,000 customer outages associated with these types of incidents, which were not related to the storm and add to the company’s overall outage count on its website. Crews are also addressing these outages.

UPDATE: As the restoration process continues, CenterPoint will update its website. The company’s website now offers a guide to help customers identify their service area. The CenterPoint outage map has been enhanced with address search capabilities for more detailed information about customer restoration. Both the map and service area updates can be found below. The company’s website now features a guide for identifying your service area, allowing you to view storm updates in your area.

According to CenterPoint, approximately 90% of customer outages will be resolved by Tuesday evening. The company remains on track to restore power to the remaining 150,000 customers by Wednesday evening.

“While the efforts by our crews have resulted in steady progress on our restoration goals, we know there is still a lot of hard work ahead to restore our customers still impacted by last Thursday’s storm,” said Lynnae Wilson, Senior Vice President, Electric Business said in a press release. “To this end, we continue to have our significant vegetation management workforce addressing extensive tree damage.”

Wilson added, “We understand how difficult it has been for our customers who are going on five days without power. We will not stop until we get the job done.”

CenterPoint announced they have posted an enhanced outage map with address search capabilities for more detailed customer restoration

Here’s a look at some of the latest updates from CenterPoint:

  • Company restores approximately 85% of those impacted by last week’s severe weather event
  • Restoration efforts continue on the most difficult outages; company expects approximately 90% of customer outages restored by Tuesday
  • CenterPoint remains on target to substantially complete restorations by Wednesday evening
  • Houston Permitting Center provides fast-track process for restoration of customer-owned equipment

“CenterPoint Energy will continue to work day and night to restore service to our impacted customers,” said Lynnae Wilson, Senior Vice President, Electric Business in a press release. “We understand the higher temperatures we are experiencing across Houston and surrounding communities make getting the lights and air conditioning back on even more important. Our customers should know that we appreciate their continued patience. Getting our jobs done as safely and quickly as possible is our top priority.”

Since the severe weather impacted the company’s service area, CenterPoint said it is confident that its customer restoration expectations will be met. A comprehensive restoration plan is being developed to restore service to key facilities vital to public safety, health and welfare, including hospitals, police and fire departments, and water treatment plants, as well as conducting damage assessments to determine the impacts on the system.

  • Help for Houston windstorm victims: Where to find food, shelter, and other services

“As the company gets further into the recovery process, customers must check for equipment damage to ensure they can receive service as soon as the system is energized. This will prevent further delays to restoration. Specifically, customers should check their weatherhead, the point where power enters the home through an electric service drop, which is often a pipe located on the side of the residence or building. If the weatherhead is damaged, we cannot safely restore service to the home until a licensed electrician has made the necessary repairs. Customers who are served by an underground service will not have a weatherhead, but there may still be damage to their equipment that could require servicing,” the company said.

To help expedite the restoration process for customers with damaged weatherheads, the Houston Permitting Center is providing a fast-track process for restoring electrical service for “like-for-like repairs only, no improvement.” To participate, follow these steps:

  • Verify your Electrical Contractor by calling 832-394-8860. Only a registered City of Houston Electrical Contractor can repair your electrical service.
  • Have your registered Electrical Contractor purchase your Temporary Cut (TCI)\Reconnect Permit using the iPermits system. Visit: the City of Houston > Online Permits (houstontx.gov)
  • For after-hours work, please use the numbers located in your electrical registration packet for the City of Houston.
  • Then the homeowner needs to contact the Electrical Service Provider (ex., Green Mountain, TXU, Reliant) to obtain a release of electrical service.
  • Once all necessary releases have been obtained and processed, a requisition will be created to restore power. If you have any questions, please contact:
