Streamline Your Business with a Customizable Excel Schedule Template

Time management is essential for any business to succeed. Keeping track of tasks, deadlines, and employee schedules can be a daunting task. Fortunately, there are tools available to help streamline the process. One such tool is the customizable Excel schedule template. This article will discuss the benefits of using an Excel schedule template and how it can help you manage your business more efficiently.

Save Time and Money

Using an Excel schedule template can save you both time and money. By having a template that is already set up with all the necessary fields, you can quickly input data and generate reports in just a few clicks. This eliminates the need to manually create spreadsheets or hire someone to do it for you, saving you both time and money in the long run. Additionally, the customizable nature of an Excel schedule template allows you to tailor it to your specific needs, ensuring that all important information is included in your reports.

Organize Your Data

An Excel schedule template also helps you organize your data more effectively. With all your tasks, deadlines, and employee schedules in one place, it’s easier to keep track of everything at once. You can also use the customizable features of an Excel schedule template to sort data by category or date range, making it even easier to find what you’re looking for quickly and efficiently.

Create Reports Easily

Finally, an Excel schedule template makes it easy to generate reports quickly and accurately. With all your data organized in one place, creating reports is as simple as selecting the fields you want included in your report and then exporting them into a spreadsheet or PDF format. This eliminates the need for manual calculations or complex formulas, making report generation much faster and more efficient than ever before.

Using an Excel schedule template can help streamline your business operations by saving time and money while organizing data more effectively and creating reports easily. Whether you’re managing tasks or employee schedules, an Excel schedule template is a great tool that can help make managing your business more efficient than ever before.

Business Model Canvas Template

Business Model Canvas

Organize your business model with this Business Model Canvas template, based on the theories of Alexander Osterwalder. Get a high-level analysis of a business in minutes by using the labeled cells to log details like Key Partners, Value Propositions, Revenue Streams, and the rest of the 9 key building blocks.

Once you do, you'll have all the most important parts of your business visually represented on a simple canvas.

What is a business model canvas template?

The business model canvas is Osterwalder's famous method of representing the 9 key elements of your business. Although, if you haven't heard of him, you may be thinking he's not that famous. Then again, you found this page, so clearly his method is at least reasonably famous.

Regardless, Swiss entrepreneur Alexander Osterwalder wrote a lot about business model design, and created the business model canvas template, which allowed businesses to easily describe and understand their business by breaking it down into key building blocks. In his co-written 2010 book, "Business Model Generation", he identified nine key building blocks: Value Proposition, Customer Segments, Channels, Customer Relationships, Revenue Streams, Cost Structure, Key Resources, Key Activities, and Key Partnerships.

If you understand all that, you understand your business. If you don't understand it, we'll explain it more below. Either way, having a template that lets you easily understand and explain your business to stakeholders is valuable.

Did you know?

Although the business model canvas template refers to key resources, key activities, and key partnerships, it is also very relevant even for businesses that don't sell keys.

Osterwalder's co-author for his book "Business Model Generation" was named Yves Pigneur, which is an anagram of "Rupees Vying". Alexander Osterwalder is an anagram of "Exalted Narrow Leaders". These are approved names for international experts on business.

Compared to modeling for canvas in the art world, a business model canvas template offers many advantages, such as being more lucrative if successful, and getting to keep your pants on.

How does it work?

The business canvas model template covers the 9 key building blocks of a business, so your job is simply to fill in each one to better understand your business:

Customer Segments: The people or organizations for whom you are creating value. Who are your users and customers?

Value Proposition: The value you offer to those customer segments. This includes the products and services you offer to each customer segment, but also the customer needs you are helping to address. Why would a customer choose you?

Channels: The bridge through which you connect the customer with the value. How do you reach your customers? Is it how they want to be reached?

Customer Relationships: The relationships you build with your customers. What types of relationships are these? What types of relationships do your customers want?

Revenue Streams: How does this all make money? What are your customers actually willing to pay for?

Key Resources: What resources do you need to deliver the value to the customers and collect revenue? Resources here include everything from money and factories to well-trained staff.

Key Activities: What activities do you need to be doing in order to deliver the value to the customers and collect revenue?

Key Partnerships: What key partnerships does your company have? What do you get out of those partnerships?

Cost Structure: Are we aiming to minimize cost or maximize value? What costs are the unavoidable key resources and activities we need? What other costs do we have, and should we reconsider the most expensive ones? ‍ Once you've filled in all nine segments of this business model canvas template, you'll have a clearer view of exactly how your business works.

Why do I need a business model canvas template?

Do you understand all the most important parts of your business implicitly? Can you explain them explicitly -- which means in detail, not just with swearing -- to yourself, your employees, and your investors, in a matter of minutes? Do you have a clear picture of exactly how all the parts of your business connect, and what things you could improve to improve your business?

A business model canvas template helps you do all of those things, by mapping out the strategy of your whole business in a single visual overview. The nine building blocks are broken down into three general categories:

Desirability (Do customers want the thing we're offering in the way we're offering it?) Feasibility (Are we capable of actually delivering the thing to the customers?) Viability (How does it make money?)

You need all three to have a successful business. Merely having a desirable product isn't enough. To understand the overarching strategy of a business, you need all three categories. You need to understand the value of the product, who will buy it, how you'll get it to them, how you'll keep things running, and how all of the aforementioned makes money.

That may sound complex. But a business model canvas simplifies it, gathering all of that information into one easily-digestible spreadsheet that you can use to quickly explain the fundamentals of your business, whether "your business" refers to an idea that you're developing and planning to start soon, or a company you've been running for 20 years.

Who benefits from business model canvas templates?

Anyone who wants to understand how a certain business actually works.

If you're a senior executive trying to communicate your business model to an audience without an endless attention span, this template will help you visualize the story of your business.

If you're a product manager trying to get some key ideas across during the product development process, this template helps you frame the conversation and lay out the fundamentals for the product.

If you're an entrepreneur planning to found a new business, this template will let you explore new business models to compare and contrast them. And then once you're settled on a model, this same template can serve as the basis for a slightly-more-comprehensive elevator pitch to investors. Maybe an escalator pitch?

In short, if you have or plan to have a business, you can benefit from a business canvas model that pushes you to map out how your business actually works.

Free Business Plan Template

One of the reasons that so many small businesses fail is that they don't do the necessary up front work to create an accurate and realistic business plan. Creating a business plan doesn't guarantee success, but the process of writing a plan is critical for any successful new business. It isn't our goal to try to tell you everything you need to know about creating a business plan. Instead, our goal is to make the process easier by providing a professionally designed business plan template that you can edit easily using Word and Excel .

Update (7/22/2016) : We've added a basic break-even analysis worksheet to the companion Excel workbook.

Description

This template provides a business plan outline with sample questions, tables, and a working table of contents. It was created for newer versions of Word and Excel (Office 2007 or later) so that you can easily change the fonts and color scheme and the file will be compatible with the mobile and web-based Word & Excel apps.

It is best to use Excel for financial statements, data tables and charts. So, we have provided a companion Excel workbook with these sample financial statements and other tables and graphs that you can copy and paste into your Word document.

The companion workbook combines many of the different spreadsheets you can find on Vertex42.com, but customized specifically for inclusion in a business plan.

Using the Business Plan Template

Editing headings and table of contents.

Word allows you to assign format Styles to text and paragraphs, and we've designed the template to use these Styles for defining headings, sub-headings, and figure captions.

If you want to add a new section so that the Table of Contents updates correctly, just add a new heading in the body of the document and assign it the Heading 1 or Heading 2 style.

To update the Table of Contents, go to the References tab and within the Table of Contents group of buttons, click on Update Table and then "Update entire table."

Copy/Paste From Excel to Word

For simple tables, you can use Copy/Paste (Ctrl+c / Ctrl+v) to copy a table from Excel to Word. This will typically paste the data as a formatted and editable table in Word, though none of the formulas will be functional within Word (and the table will not be linked to Excel). If you don't want the table to be editable in Word, you can "Paste as a Picture" using Paste Special or by choosing the "Picture" option when you right-click in Word to paste the table.

Important : When you paste a chart object into your business plan, make sure to "Paste as a Picture" because pasting the chart as an embedded object means that the entire spreadsheet becomes embedded in your Word document (even though what you see is only the chart).

If you want to insert a table into Word as a "Linked Object" so that when you edit Excel, the table in Word will update automatically, you may have a more difficult time preserving the formatting of the original. However, at the least the entire spreadsheet won't be embedded within your business plan Word document.

What Is a Business Model Canvas?

A business model canvas is a strategic management document that assists you in developing business models of all kinds, from lean to startup to subscription models. It is a purely visual chart that identifies and describes core business elements, like value propositions, market segments, and customers.

What Is a Business Model Canvas Used For?

Typically a one-page document, a business model canvas grants a high-level overview of the business structure and operation and describes the overall value of an organization. Not only is it a strategic tool for developing a new business, but it’s also a way to upgrade or analyze an already-active business. A business model canvas brings clarity, strategy, and simplicity to a business plan, especially regarding areas that are usually difficult to describe.

Why Is a Business Model Canvas Important?

A business model canvas is important because it helps provide a company with clarity, focus, and strategy. It offers a detailed structure of what the business does, how it should perform, and what markets or customer groups it should target.

What a Business Model Canvas Can Help an Organization Do

A business model canvas not only increases the transparency of the business plan by supplying a single, flexible explanation of the business and its strategy, but also helps a business or organization to do the following:

Describe, design, or redesign a business model

Organize new thoughts and ideas about how a business can increase its success

Enable both new and existing organizations to increase their focus on the operations and processes that run their business

Provide a platform to explore new options for a business, test any assumptions, and discover new opportunities

Devise new strategies for a business

Look at a business with a critical eye, identifying areas of improvement or areas of great success

Reevaluate any unique aspects of a business that are working and fine tune those aspects in order to improve an overall business strategy

Discover opportunities to grow or improve upon existing processes

Provide either a general guideline or a detailed layout of a business, depending on its structure

Identify specific instructions on how to achieve a new or improved business plan

Assess potential trade-off opportunities

Align marketing strategies and other business activities

Enable a structured conversation about a business model and an operation and management strategy that can include stakeholders, key team members, and external resources

Present strategic analyses, like a market analysis, customer analysis, or operational analysis

Develop new insight on customers and what they are seeking from a business

Describe the relationships between new initiatives and how a company can achieve those initiatives simultaneously

Who Created the Business Model Canvas?

Business theorist Alexander Osterwalder created the business model canvas following his earlier work on business model ontology.

The Core Structures of Business Models

Based on his analysis, Osterwalder proposed that all businesses share similar modeling, using the following core structures:

Infrastructure : This includes key business activities, key resources, and key partners that the business leverages on a regular basis.

Offering : The concept of offering deals with the unique value proposition of a business, which is what distinguishes one business from another.

Customers : This includes customer segments, channels, and customer relationships, all of which drive the strategy and overall success of a business.

Finances : Finances include both the cost structure and the revenue streams that drive the profit of a business.

When Was the Business Model Canvas Invented?

Alexander Osterwalder invented the business model canvas in 2008, following his work on business model ontology. Since 2008, business experts have created many variations on Osterwalder’s original business model canvas, including ones that are industry specific.

What Do You Include in a Business Model Canvas Template?

A business model canvas has a few main components that build out the structure, organization, and strategy of a business. The components include the following:

Key Activities : The key activities identify the crucial steps and activities a business must perform in order to deliver on its propositions and continue to succeed. As a business changes and grows, it must discover new techniques to perform better, provide better services or products, and consider how these key activities help to drive the value proposition.

Key Resources/Partners : The key resources delineate the strategic assets needed to achieve core business goals and maintain a more targeted and successful approach than one’s competitors. Three core business products make up the key resources: product, scope, and infrastructure.

Value Proposition : This is the driving force of the business, as it identifies the uniqueness of a business’s offering (i.e., what differentiates it from other competitors). The value prop works to pinpoint the needs of the customer and deliver on those needs with the company’s own product or service.

Channels : The channels signify the various media used to communicate the value prop to the appropriate customers. Channels also identify where and how you will sell your product and to what customers.

Customer Segments : This refers to the way in which customers interact with the business through the product or service lifecycle and which type of market a customer might engage with. Types of markets can include niche, mass, segmented, diversified, or multi-sided.

Cost Structure : The cost structure of a business model canvas pairs together how key activities will drive costs and determines how well the costs are aligned with the value prop. It is at this time that businesses must determine other key cost decisions, like using a fixed, variable, cost-driven, or value-driven structure and figuring out how the scope and scale of the business relate to the costs and revenue.

Revenue Streams : This determines the way a company generates revenue from each customer segment. Revenue streams can come in the form of asset sales, usage or subscription fees, lending, leasing, renting, licensing, brokerage fees, and advertising. A business determines its revenue streams based on its overall structure.

What Is a Business Model Canvas Report?

A business model canvas report is a roll-up of all the key details described in a business model canvas. The report aims to describe each component in further detail, providing commentary on both why a company is structured the way it is and how it plans to attain that structure.

What Is a Lean Canvas Template?

A lean canvas template is a one-page business plan that summarizes a business and breaks it down into nine key elements. Those elements include problems, solutions, key metrics, value propositions, advantages, channels, customer segments, cost structures, and revenue streams.

Why Have a Business Model Canvas?

Businesses and organizations should have a business model canvas in order to break down the key components of a business and discuss what is and isn’t working. This process will help you identify problem areas, improve on certain aspects, and continue to grow, generate revenue, and succeed.

Tips For Creating a Business Model Canvas

The best way to get started is by gathering a core group comprised of key team members and stakeholders (ideally around 3-5 people) and drawing out a canvas on paper or creating a canvas digitally.

Allow yourself plenty of undisturbed time to start mapping out a high-level overview of the business and its structure. Connect the core building blocks of your business, like market segments and target customers, and brainstorm how to achieve the most success.

Make sure to keep on open mind and separate the current from the ideal state of the business. After you have completed your canvas, review it and share it with your team to collect further ideas or comments. Ask team members to look for missing details, both in the design and structure of the canvas.

Once you have completed the canvas review, test your new plan and analyze it periodically to ensure it is working for your business.
