Work from home jobs have become extremely popular.

115% more popular according to a recent study by FlexJobs and Global Workplace Analytics.

As such, it’s no surprise that the 1.8 million Americans that left their jobs between 2005 and 2017 cited greater flexibility, increased happiness, and better pay as primary factors in their decision to ditch the traditional 9-to-5 grind and work from home.

remote work statistics

If you are self-motivated and consider yourself a go-getter, a work-from-home career may be a great option for you.

From customer service reps and social media managers, to travel agents and transcriptionists, work-from-home jobs provide the opportunity to earn a living from anywhere.

Employee Positions

One of the easiest ways to get started working from home is to work for someone else, and there are a number of real careers you can consider.

1. Online teacher

Potential earnings: $30,000 to $40,000 per year

Schools and other educational institutions are beginning to realize the importance and role of online education. Whether you’re a licensed teacher or not, you can earn an income teaching classes online .

Demand is growing for online education solutions as a supplement to in-class schooling or, in some cases, a replacement altogether. Subjects in the highest demand are English, science, and math. Classes are usually taught via Skype, Zoom, or pre-recorded sessions.

K12 is one option for teaching online. One perk to working for the company is that your job will likely include benefits like health insurance, retirement savings accounts, and paid time off. Since you’ll be working with kids, you still need to go through the typical hiring process for a teacher: background check, reference check, interviews, etc.

If you want to supplement your teaching income or you’re not a licensed teacher, you can create courses on platforms like Outschool . With these courses, you have more flexibility in your rates, your hours, and what subjects you teach.

2. Online tutor

Potential earnings: $14 to $22 per hour

If you’d prefer a more flexible teaching job, consider tutoring through Education First or VIPKid. The service is incredibly flexible. You get to set your own hours, and there’s no lesson planning involved. They provide the lesson materials and communicate with the parents; all you need is a laptop and a desire to help teach children.

3. Transcriptionist

Potential earnings: $15 to $30 per hour, depending on experience

Transcriptionists take audio and video content and turn it into written text. It sounds simple enough, but this work requires a certain level of skill. You’ll need to know how to type efficiently and accurately. Some transcriptionists even use special equipment like a foot pedal to start and stop audio recordings.

Still, there are so many unique opportunities to land remote transcription work. If you’re a beginner, your best option is to sign up with transcription job sites like Rev or Scribie to find paying jobs that you can do on a contractor basis. You can also offer your services on Fiverr or reach out to companies and entrepreneurs to pitch them your services. For example, if you like a specific podcast, see if it needs someone to transcribe episodes.

4. Medical coder

Potential earnings: $60,000 per year

Medical coding is a popular work-from-home career field. Remote medical coders review patients’ records and services for the correct diagnosis and procedure codes so the provider can bill the patient and insurance companies for the correct amount.

You will need some training for this job, which you can find through in-person courses or an online program. Having some training or certification can help you land an entry-level role. Some companies hire remote medical coders on a contract basis or even as a part- or full-time employee.

5. Virtual nurse/telemedicine

Potential earnings: approximately $61,000 per year

If you have a nursing degree, you can work as a virtual nurse helping people over the phone or via the internet. Virtual nurses use the internet to monitor vital signs, connect with virtual command centers to communicate with doctors, advise patients online, and perform other similar duties.

You can find these jobs at hospitals and health centers and apply just like you would for a traditional nursing job.

6. Call center agent

Remote center agents do everything they would in a traditional call center: sales, telemarketing, customer service, and customer support.

You may have to handle incoming or make outgoing calls, depending on the nature of the job. Some companies that hire work-from-home agents prefer some call center experience, but most will offer training so don’t worry if you’ve never done this work before.

You can work either full- or part-time in this role.

7. Customer service representative

Potential earnings: $28,000 per year

If you know you want to work from home but have no idea where to start, customer service can be a good choice. Most companies need customer service representatives to field customer questions, concerns, and complaints; and a lot of them, such as Apple, American Express, and U-Haul, hire remote employees to perform this role.

Training is usually provided, and you’ll receive a set schedule. However, your schedule can rotate, especially if it’s a 24-hour business. Similar to call center agents, you can work either full- or part-time as a customer service representative.

8. Amazon remote employee

Potential earnings: anywhere from $10 per hour to $50,000 per year depending on the job and experience

It’s possible to make money with Amazon in a number of ways, including work-from-home positions ranging from customer service agents and technical support to data entry, or even all the way to supply chain managers.

Job responsibilities vary according to the position you’re applying to, so you’ll have to carefully and thoroughly read the job listing to get an accurate picture of what’s required. You can find open listings by visiting its Virtual Locations jobs page.

Positions can be hourly, part-time, or full-time.

9. Search engine evaluator

Potential earnings: $37,00 per year

If you’re looking for a legitimate, non-phone based remote job, consider looking for work as a search engine evaluator. In this position, you’ll spend your time evaluating results for search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing to help improve the overall user experience.

Web research skills, analytical abilities, and excellent communication are important for this position. Note that you typically need to pass an exam before you start working as an evaluator.

The hours are pretty flexible, but you can expect to work around 35 hours per week.

Potential earnings: $47,000-$66,000 per year for full-time work

As an insurance claims investigator, you’ll work for insurance companies to investigate and validate claims made by policyholders to protect the companies from fraud. Although you’ll primarily work from home, you might need to go into the field to conduct interviews or take pictures.

You don’t need any formal education or training, but it generally requires excellent communication, research, and interview skills. Many companies provide on-the-job training and continuing education.

12. Camp counselor

Potential earnings: $11-$17 per hour

Although typically an outdoor, in-person job, there are some remote camp counselor jobs, particularly for STEM-based camps. You’ll work with campers teaching them coding, performing science experiments, digital art, and more.

The hours vary depending on the company you work for and when the students schedule their exams.

If you want the benefit of working for someone else but prefer the flexibility of making your own schedule, there are many ways to work from home as a contractor.

16. Freelance proofreader

Potential earnings: Approximately $50,000 per year, depending on rates, experience, number of clients, and type of project

Where to Find Full-Time Work-From-Home Jobs

Finding a work-from-home job is similar to finding a traditional job. To get started, you just need to know where to look.

Job boards and sites

If you’re looking for a more traditional job, start by looking on sites like ZipRecruiter , Indeed.com, Glassdoor, or even LinkedIn’s job board. You can filter your searches by type of work, location, hours, and even specific jobs. For instance, if you want to work as a virtual nurse, you can visit ZipRecruiter and type “telemedicine” and your location into the search feature and you’ll get a listing of all available positions with real companies in your area.

Freelancers should consider using sites like Upwork, Freelancer, or Fiverr to find clients. You can also browse job boards like the ones found on ProBlogger and Mediabistro. If you need to create a profile, make sure it’s as complete as possible and includes a way for prospective clients to contact you.

Company websites

If you’re interested in working for a specific company, visit its website and search for its “careers” or “job openings” page. That should provide you with the application process, salary information, and what positions are currently open. If it’s a smaller company, you might want to reach out to the owner if nothing is listed on the website. The website may not have been updated to reflect current openings.

If you work in a specific industry, do some research to find out what companies in that field hire for the job you’re interested in. Companies like SYKES and Appen hire search engine evaluators, and SigTrack, Capital Typing, and DionData Solutions hire data entry clerks.

You can also find work-from-home jobs by cold calling or emailing businesses in your area, friends who are business owners, or connecting with businesses on social media. Facebook has networking groups for most professions, as does LinkedIn, and if you have a local chamber of commerce or small business group, consider joining them as well.

Don’t rule out job fairs or other types of in-person hiring events. You never know what opportunities you might come across.

Watch Out for Work-from-Home Job Scams

The rise of the internet has created opportunities that didn’t even exist just a few years ago. High demand for remote workers, especially in the tech industry, has led to the largest voluntary exodus from the in-person workforce in almost twenty years.

If you’re not thrilled about commuting to the office or if you’re looking for a part-time gig, there are plenty of legitimate work-from-home jobs to choose from.

However, some people have taken advantage of the common desire to work remotely. For each legitimate work-from-home job out there, there is likely a scam to match it. Jobs that ask you to post ads online, stuff envelopes, or assemble products from your home are all probably scams.

It’s important to know how to recognize these work-from-home scams so you don’t waste your money or time. If something sounds too good to be true, it likely is.

Long before the Covid-19 pandemic forced businesses to vacate their offices, working from home was on the rise. Nearly a year since the first coronavirus lockdowns, telecommuting is here to stay for millions of workers.

A fourth-quarter 2020 survey by Upwork, a job marketplace for remote workers and freelancers, estimates that nearly 57 percent of Americans are  working from home at least some of the time, with 42 percent of that group working remotely full time.

Upwork estimates that by 2025, 36.2 million American workers will be fully remote, which is nearly double the pre-pandemic rates.

Working from home has benefits for both workers and employers. Studies by Global Workplace Analytics, a San Diego research and consulting firm, have shown that telecommuting saves employers and workers time and money, reduces stress, increases productivity, lowers exposure to office colds and flus, and helps the environment by reducing the number of commuters.

Among the fastest-growing career categories for remote jobs are: computers and IT, medical and health, project management, sales, accounting and finance, customer service and marketing, according to FlexJobs, a marketplace for remote work.

“The coronavirus pandemic has permanently reshaped the workplace and how, when and where people work,” Sara Sutton, founder and CEO of FlexJobs, said in a statement. “Business models have been forever disrupted with the realization that remote work is smart, strategic and sustainable for companies to embrace, improving not only the bottom line but also providing benefits to the overall workforce.”

Bankrate has put together a list of 20 legitimate work-at-home jobs. The median wage is in the middle of the data set, with half of the jobs paying less and half paying more. BLS job-growth projections are for 2019 to 2029.

Avoid work-from-home scams

For every real work-at-home job, there are dozens of frauds. Scammers try to steal your identity and/or money by getting personal information that a new hire would be expected to give an employer, such as a Social Security number or bank account number.

When considering a work-from-home job, put up your scam-detection radar. “First and foremost, trust your gut,” advises Christine Durst, who runs Rat Race Rebellion, an online job site that caters to the work-at-home and virtual workforce. “Almost every scam victim I’ve spoken with says, ‘I sort of felt like something wasn’t right.’”

In addition, keep in mind that legit jobs don’t ask you to send them money and or cash/deposit checks.

Durst says to look for these signs that you are dealing with a legitimate employer:

  • The hirer is an established company.
  • The job ad includes the company name and does not ask applicants to reply to a blind email address.
  • Human resources personnel are available for questions.
  • There is mention of company benefits and vacation policies — information commonly associated with “real” employment.
  • There is an application and interview process, not simply an emailed offer.
  • The employer can detail the job duties and expectations.
  • References/work samples are requested.

Park rangers sometimes get free housing as part of their job package —23 Jobs That Typically Provide ... [+] Housing And How To Get One

There are many different jobs that typically provide housing. The range of industries include:

1. In-house services (5 examples)

2. At-sea roles (3 examples)

3. Parks, forestry and wildlife services (3 examples)

4. Engineering and construction (3 examples)

5. Consulting (3 examples)

6. Mission-driven (3 examples)

7. Housesitting coupled with digital nomad side hustle (3 examples)

Jobs Range In Skills And Responsibilities

In-house service jobs take care of various aspects in the household and may include room and board onsite, but not always. If you’re only interested in the below jobs if housing is part of the compensation, then you’ll want to check for that upfront:

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

1. Childcare

2. Elder care

3. House care (e.g., housekeeper, personal chef)

4. Gardening/ landscaping

5. Household management (e.g., organizing the household staff, scheduling maintenance appointments errands)

Just like you can support a household and then live there, you can support a ship and live at sea. If you’re relying on this work for your housing, you’ll want to land long engagements, whether that’s long-haul cruises, a private yacht that continually sails or an academic program held on a ship (e.g., Semester At Sea ):

1. Cruise staff – medical, housekeeping, culinary, entertainment/ activities, etc.

2. Commercial ship crew and maintenance

3. School at sea faculty and administration

If you love the outdoors, roles at national or state parks may come with housing at the park.

1. Park ranger

2. Wilderness guide

3. Nature educator

You can also work outdoors on utility projects and public works projects:

1. Oil rig worker

2. Civil engineer

3. Public works construction team

Some jobs require almost constant travel to serve clients and will pay for your housing when you’re onsite at the client. If you string together enough of these projects in a row, you essentially live in project-subsidized housing and may not need a primary residence, or you can couch-surf in between projects:

1. Management consultant

3. Travel nurse or other medical staff

Some career paths that people select out of a calling or sense of mission offer jobs with housing:

1. Military service

2. Religious service

3. Volunteer service

Finally, if you’re entrepreneurial and can figure out how to make money remotely, landing a housesitting assignment is a way to get free housing. Some common digital nomad jobs include:

1. Digital marketer

2. Online tutor

3. Virtual assistant

(See 5 Top Jobs For Digital Nomads for more ideas.)

There Is Something For Every Level Of Experience

Each of the jobs above has its own qualifications for skills, experience and education, even within the same job. You might be an attractive candidate for a childcare or elder care role simply based on your personal experience babysitting siblings or tending to grandparents. However, some households might want CPR certification, medical training or special skills such as being bilingual.

Some roles, such as military service, come with a significant commitment. Religious service can require years in seminary before landing a placement. Management consultants often have industry experience or technical skills – though large consulting firms, such as McKinsey or the Big Four (EY, PWC, KPMG, Deloitte), hire right out of school. Nature, medical and engineering jobs require specific degrees.

That said, if you don’t have a clear idea yet of what you want to do and therefore don’t want to sign up for years in the military or seminary or pursue a special degree, take an inventory of the skills you do have and start there. The wide variety of roles means may find something to fit your existing skills and experience level. If you’re entrepreneurial, you can create your own job and focus on housesitting gigs to get the housing.

Money Varies Based On Location, Employer Size, Industry And Experience

Just like the qualifications required will vary, so will the salary. Whether a job provides housing or not, salary is always influenced by location, employer size, industry and candidate experience. Even if two jobs are similar in responsibilities, the salaries will be different for a job in a small town versus a big city. A similar job at a new startup or a neighborhood mom-and-pop will likely pay less than the same job at an established company or a large Fortune 500. A tech company or financial firm will likely pay more for the same job than a nonprofit or education institution. Finally, someone coming into a job with five years of experience will likely make less than another hire who brings ten years of experience.

Since salary is dependent on multiple factors, do some research to get a sense of what your target job should offer. Look at salary sites such as Glassdoor. Talk to recruiters. Talk to friends and colleagues who know about the role you’re looking for (or type of company, industry or general location) to get their insight into what the salary might be. (See How To Get Salary Data You Can Really Use for more details on researching salary.)

Free Housing Is Just One Factor To Consider

The allure of free housing is attractive, but it is just one factor to consider in choosing your next job. If housing would otherwise cost you $2000 per month, and another job pays $2000 more but doesn’t offer free housing, then the two jobs are equivalent from a salary standpoint. You would still need to look at benefits, paid time off and other aspects of compensation. You should also look at the nature of the job, your work environment, opportunities for learning and growth, and other factors that influence your career future.

List all the factors that are meaningful to you when choosing your next job . Rank order them so you have a sense of priority. Free housing may be one of your top factors, and if so, you can use the above list of potential jobs to jumpstart your thinking about career paths to pursue. But consider your other priorities as well, and make sure you’re not going after free housing at a cost of following your true interests .

Typical Job Search Best Practices Still Apply

Going after a job that offers free housing is similar to any other job search. You need to understand what the prospective employer wants and needs , and convince them that you can meet that need and be a pleasure to work with while you’re adding that value! Since you’ll be living onsite, you’ll want to emphasize your integrity and character (this should be a selling point for all jobs, but with jobs that provide housing, you’re also selling yourself as compatible to live with and trustworthy with the employer’s home or property). As you prepare your marketing tools (e.g., resume, LinkedIn) and practice your interview responses, make sure to highlight, not just proof points for the overall job, but examples that support your trustworthiness and compatibility.

From longshoremen to charter boats, Baltimore's port closure means lost work

Ship-to-shore cranes sit unused after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed, blocking access to the Port of Baltimore.

When the container ship Dali struck the base of the Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday morning, it set off a rapid chain of events. The bridge crumpled into the Patapsco River, its twisted metal draped over the ship and its thousands of containers. Eight construction workers and their cars tumbled into the water. Two of the workers are dead; four are still missing and presumed dead. And the whole disaster is now blocking one of the country's busiest ports, the Port of Baltimore.

For many workers at the port, that chain of events means that work has either slowed or stopped completely.

"Quite a few are out of work right now," says Scott Cowan, president of International Longshoremen's Association Local 333 in Baltimore. He represents 2,400 dockworkers and ILA members in the Port of Baltimore.

These are the workers who load and unload ships at the port. They operate cranes. They receive and deliver cargo. They do maintenance and repair work on equipment and containers. They perform clerical work like timekeeping and recording the movement of cargo.

"Some of our maintenance guys and mechanics are still going to work to maintain the equipment in the facility," says Cowan. "But the bulk of our work is the unloading and loading. That's where the labor-intensive jobs are, where we use a lot of people. ... And that's not happening right now."

How long it takes to get the shipping channel cleared will determine how deeply port workers are affected — and the size of the impact to Maryland's economy . Cowan says the closure of the shipping channel is costing $191 million a day in lost economic activity.

The state has set up a dedicated unemployment line for workers affected by the port closure. Through Wednesday, the day after the collapse, fewer than 200 affected workers had made unemployment claims, according to a spokesperson for the Maryland Department of Labor.

And the Maryland Senate president, Sen. Bill Ferguson, said earlier this week that he will sponsor emergency legislation to provide income replacement for workers impacted by the port's closure.

Still, Cowan doesn't think the impact will be a lasting one for Baltimore's longshoremen: "I believe the cargo will rebound here quite strongly and we'll be going into the Christmas season here shortly, bringing goods into this country. So we should be fine."

Smaller waterfront businesses are also affected

Bobby LaPin says he won't start cruises for his charter boat business for another month, due to collapse of the Key Bridge. His sailboat is seen docked at the Port Covington Marina on Thursday in Baltimore.

It's a seasonal business, and he'd been gearing up to start cruises on April 1. Now he won't open until May. So the sailboat remains anchored, a blue tarp pulled taut over its deck.

"We decided to push back our opening day ... because we don't want to add to clutter of boats in the harbor while there is a recovery mission still ongoing," he says. "I also don't want to take bookings for people that are simply trying to get on the boat so they can see the devastation of the bridge."

Normally he'd be hiring deckhands and captains to work for the summer, folks who work the winter in Florida and the summer up north. But for now, he's holding off any hiring.

The twisted metal of the Francis Scott Key Bridge hangs over the container ship Dali, which caused the bridge's collapse on Tuesday after striking one of the bridge's piers. The wreckage is blocking the Port of Baltimore's shipping channel. Tim Wolfer for NPR hide caption

He says it's too early to tell exactly what will be the impact on his business, but he expects bookings from tourists and conventioneers to decline for a time. And since the collapsed bridge is blocking access to the Chesapeake, he can't take longer, more lucrative bookings, where he'd sail out to the bay.

"Obviously, the No. 1 concern economically is going to be to clear the channel so shipping can start. And then after that happens, they have to build a bridge," he says. "But when they build a bridge, they need to block the channel to do so. So, you know, are we even going to have a bridge again?"

Officials say the first step is to remove the debris, then open the shipping channel, and later build a new bridge. President Biden has pledged that the federal government will pay for the bridge's rebuilding, which could take years .

It won't be necessary to close the channel while the bridge is under construction, says Benjamin Schafer, a professor of civil and systems engineering at Johns Hopkins University. "This has been a common challenge for bridge builders going back to at least the late 19th century," and there are a number of construction techniques that will allow the channel to stay open, he says.

A weird few years ahead

Along the waterfront at the Port Covington Marina on Thursday, all the boats were anchored. Next door, the terminal at Cruise Maryland sits empty, the giant ships now directed to other moorings. Just inland from the marina are the sleek new buildings of Baltimore Peninsula , with apartments, office space and restaurants.

Alex Snider is the waterfront operations manager for MAG Partners, the company that's redeveloping the peninsula. He says this time of year is generally quiet at the marina, before the season for recreational boaters picks up in late April or early May.

Even with the bridge collapse and the port closure, Snider talks about everything that's planned at the marina in the months ahead: "There's a sailing club that's going to be here, we've got a kayak launch. We've got the Baltimore Dragon Boat Club's going to be rowing out of here this year. So it's very busy."

Like many in Baltimore, the Key Bridge stirs up feelings of nostalgia for Snider, who used to run boats in the harbor.

"It was a beautiful bridge," he says. "I've piloted driven boats, captained boats under that bridge hundreds and hundreds of times. ... It's going to be a weird few years, not having that there visually."
