Google Chrome for Windows and Chrome OS lets you change its user interface language from over 100 available languages. So, if you want Chrome's settings and menus to appear in another language, here's how to change the default language.

macOS , Linux , iPhone , iPad , and Android users have to change the system's default language in order for the language in Chrome to follow suit.

We use Google Chrome on Windows for this guide. Changing Chrome's default language on Chrome OS, however, is virtually identical.

The first thing you want to do is fire up Chrome, click the menu icon, and then click on "Settings." Alternatively, you can type

into your address bar to go directly there.

Click the menu button, then click Settings

Once in the Settings menu, scroll down to the bottom, and click on "Advanced."

Under Settings, click advanced, located at the bottom of the page

Scroll down a little bit more until you see the Languages heading. Click on "Language" to expand the setting.

Click on your browser's language to show more language settings

Once the setting expands, click on the three dots next to your preferred language, and then tick the checkbox next to "Display Google Chrome in This Language."

Click the menu icon, and then check the box next to "Display Google Chrome in this language."

If you want Chrome to translate a page on the internet into a specific language, click the menu icon, and then tick "Offer to Translate Pages in This Language."

If you want pages translated into this language as well, from the menu, check the box next to "Offer to translate pages in this language."

Anytime you visit a page, Chrome will prompt you with a message asking if you want it to translate the page into the language you chose.

Related: How to Turn Translation On or Off in Chrome

If the language you want Chrome to display in isn't listed, click "Add Languages."

Don't see your language? Click "Add language."

In the window that appears, you can either search for a language or scroll through the list and tick the checkbox next to it. After you check all the languages you want to use, click "Add" to close the window.

Find your preferred language with the search box or by scrolling through the list, check the box next to it, and then click "Add."

After you select the language you want Chrome UI to display in, you have to relaunch the browser for these changes to take effect. Click "Relaunch."

After you select the language as default, relaunch Chrome when you click "Relaunch."

After Chrome relaunches, the browser will open in your preferred language. If you want to change Chrome to another language---or back to the previous one---head into the language settings and choose a different one.

Is your Google Chrome web browser in the wrong language? If you're using a Windows PC or the Android mobile app, it's easy to change Chrome's default language so menu items, pop-up messages, and other text always appears in a language you can read. If you're using a Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Linux, Chrome automatically uses your system's default language, so you won't be able to choose an alternative. This wikiHow article teaches you how to set the default language used in the Google Chrome web browser on both your computer and phone or tablet.

Things You Should Know

  • If you're using a Windows computer or an Android phone or tablet, you can change the default language in your Chrome Settings.
  • If you're using a Mac, Linux, or an iPhone/iPad, you can't change the Chrome default language. Chrome only displays in your system language.
  • If a page displays in a language that isn't default for you, Google Chrome will offer to translate it.

Step 1 Open Chrome on your Android.

  • If you're using an iPhone or iPad, you won't be able to change the default language in Chrome. Chrome can only display in the language you're using as your iPhone or iPad's primary language .

Step 2 Tap ⋮.

  • It's only possible to change Chrome's default display language on a Windows PC. If you're using a Mac or Linux, Chrome can only display menus and other information in your system's default language . However, if you go to a website that's not in your system's default language, you'll always have the option to translate the page .

Step 2 Click ⋮.

  • You'll now see a list of installed languages in the right panel. Your current default language displays the text "This language is used to display the Google Chrome UI."

Step 5 Click Add languages.

  • If you want to use a language that you already see in the list as your default language, just click the three dots next to the language's name and choose Display Google Chrome in this Language .

Step 6 Select a language.

  • You may have to scroll down to find the language that you want to use.
  • Languages are arranged alphabetically.

Step 7 Click Add.

  • Changing the default language will not change your spell-check settings. To change spell-check settings, use the switches next to each language under "Spell Check" to enable or disable spell check for individual languages.
  • Some languages, such as "English", cannot be set as the default language; instead, you'll have to select the "English (United States)" dialect (or another dialect). [1] X Research source
  • After you set the language, click Relaunch to restart Chrome in the correct language. Once Chrome re-opens, your selected language will be used for things like Chrome's Settings menu and other built-in menu options.

The Easiest Way to Change Chrome's Default Languages

Add more languages to Google Chrome

how to change language in google chrome video

Many websites are offered in more than one language. While the default setting in Google Chrome is USA English, you change Chrome's language to almost anything you'd like.

Instructions in this article apply to the desktop version of Chrome for all operating systems and the Chrome mobile app for iOS and Android .

How to Change Chrome's Languages

In Google Chrome, you're given the ability to specify languages in order of preference. Before a web page is rendered, Chrome will check to see if it supports your preferred languages in the order listed. If the page is available in one of these languages, it will be displayed in your preferred script.

To change your language preferences in Chrome:

Before you begin, you may want to update Google Chrome to make sure you're using the most recent version of the browser .

Select the three dots in the top-right corner of Chrome and choose  Settings  from the drop-down menu.

You can also get to Chrome's settings by entering chrome://settings/ in the URL bar.

Select the three lines next to Settings and choose  Advanced .

Find the Languages section, and then select  Language  to pull down a new menu.

You should see at least one language or possibly more listed in preference order. One will be chosen as the default language with a message that says This Language is used to display the Google Chrome UI . You may also see another option with a message that says This language is used to translate webpages .

To choose another language, select  Add languages .

Search or scroll through the list and check the boxes beside the languages you want, then select  Add .

With the new languages now at the bottom of the list, select the three dots next to a language to adjust its position on the list.

You also have the option to delete the language, display Google Chrome in that language, or have Chrome automatically offer to translate pages to that language.

Exit the Chrome settings. Language preferences are saved automatically as you make changes to them.

When you visit a page written in a language that's not on your list, Chrome will offer to translate it. If you want to print in another language from Chrome, you must first translate the page.

How to Change Languages in the Chrome App

The mobile Chrome app can translate pages too, but it doesn't offer as much control over the language selection as you have with the desktop program. To change the default language and translate text to a different language in the Chrome app:

Open the Chrome app and tap More .

Tap Settings .

Tap Language & Region .

Tap Search language .

Tap the language you want to use.

If you visit a website with text in a different language, the Chrome app will present language options at the bottom of the page. Select your language to have Google Chrome translate the page.

You can also modify the default language in Yahoo and change the default language in Firefox .

How to change your language in Google Chrome on desktop

chrome os android feature killing off apps

Google Chrome supports a wide range of languages. While it'll default to English in most cases, there's nothing stopping you from changing its settings and displaying pages in Spanish, French, or dozens of other languages.

Add a new language

Display the new language on windows or mac, a note about web content.

Changing your default language in Chrome takes only a few seconds, and the technique used is the same across Windows and Mac. Aside from changing your language, note that Chrome now gives you the option to automatically translate pages written in another language – making it easy to read content from around the globe.

What You Need

  • Google Chrome

Here is what you need to know about changing your language settings and preferences in Chrome.

Changing the language used in Chrome only takes a few steps, but keep in mind that it only applies to the Chrome interface. For instance, if you change the default language to French, all text within the Chrome interface, such as menus and settings, appear in French. The change does not apply to web content.

The following instructions will work for Chrome on both Windows and Mac. Keep in mind there might be slight variations to these instructions depending on whether or not you're running the latest version of Chrome.

Step 1: With Chrome open, click the three-dot icon located in the top-right corner.

Step 2: Click Settings listed on the drop-down menu.

Step 3: Click Languages listed on the newly expanded menu on the left. If this isn't readily available, your version on Chrome might require you to first click Advanced .

Step 4: On the right, click the down arrow icon next to Language to expand the list.

Step 5: Click the blue Add Languages link.

Step 6: A pop-up window appears. Click the box next to the language you want to add, followed by the blue Add button.

Step 7: The new language now appears on the Languages list. Click the three-dot icon to the right of each language to reorder or remove as needed.

Step 8: Once you’re done, close the Settings tab. All changes save and update automatically.

After adding the new language, now it’s time to set it as the default.

Step 1: As instructed in the first section, navigate through Settings to the Languages menu and click the down arrow icon to expand the Language menu.

Step 2: Click the three-dot button to the right of your new language.

Step 3: In the pop-up menu, click the box next to Display Google Chrome in This Language to set the new language as your default.

Step 4: Click the Relaunch button now displayed next to the new default language.

If you switched Chrome’s interface language from English to French, all internet content stays in its original language. For instance, you’ll view Digital Trends in English because it’s still classified as a language you use. If you navigate to a website in Spanish, Google Translate will suggest English as the language.

If an all-French adventure is appealing to you, you can obtain this by eliminating English from your Languages settings. When you remove it, you’re telling Google Chrome that English is not a language you usually read.

Removing a language can be done by going back to the Languages menu, clicking the three-dots to the right of the language you want to remove, then selecing Remove .

Also, note that if you navigate to a website that is written in a language that's not your default Chrome language, the software will give you the option to have the page automatically translated. For example, if you have English set as your default language and go to a website in Spanish, you'll see a small pop-up box at the top right of the screen that says Translate . Click that button, and the page will reload with English text.

Language diversity is a big deal for Google, catering to a worldwide user base of cultures and dialects. Your default language setting on Google Chrome may be English, but there are options for folks who don't speak English. Language barriers are removed with a Chrome feature that translates web page text into your chosen dialect. Here's how to change the language settings on devices running Google Chrome, including useful Chromebooks , Android devices, and PCs, all conducted within Google Chrome.

How to change Google Chrome's language on Windows computers

You can change the default language of Google Chrome from the Windows app. If you install Chrome on a Mac or Linux computer, you can only change it from your computer's settings menu. You may need to restart the browser for the settings to take effect. Additionally, the option to display Chrome in a language or offer translations may be grayed out, meaning Chrome doesn't support the language on its user interface (UI).

  • Launch Google Chrome .
  • Click the three-dot icon beside your profile icon.

How to change your language in Google on desktop, mobile, or the Chrome browser

  • If you don't have a Windows or Chromebook device, you can change the language of your Google search results.
  • On all mobile devices, you must change the default language of your entire device to view the Chrome app in your preferred language.

Google lets you change languages across your Google services, on the Chrome browser, and directly on a web page through translation.

If you want to change your default language or add multiple languages to your Google browser, services, or direct web pages, here's how to do it.

How to change language in Google on desktop

How to change language in Google on mobile

You can change the language of your Google account services on your Android or iPhone following mostly the same steps as you would on the desktop. Smartphone users just need to take a few extra steps in the beginning.

To change language for Google services and web page translation on Android, you'll first need to open your Settings app and select Google from the list of options. On your account profile, tap "Manage your Google Account" under your email and profile icon. Finally, choose the "Data & personalization" option from the top bar.

On an iPhone, it's much easier to get to your account's language settings. Just open the Gmail app, tap your profile picture or initials in the top right corner, and select "Google Account." From here you should be able to access your data and personalization settings.

How to change language in Google for products and search results

5. If your preferred language isn't already listed, click "Add languages."

6. In the pop-up, select the language you want to add, then click "Add" in the lower right corner.

7. Click on the three vertical dots to the right of your preferred language's name and select "Move to the top" to give that language the highest priority.

8. Once the language is at the top, click the three dots next to it again and check the "Display Google Chrome in this language" box.

9. Restart Chrome for the changes to take effect.

Troubleshooting language changes in Google

With so many ways to change your Google language across devices, services, and products, you're bound to run into issues. Here's a few common ones and how to fix them.

If your language update didn't work: Sometimes it will appear that a language update hasn't occurred. You can try restarting your Chrome browser, your Google app, or logging back into your account to see if that updates the changes. If not, try clearing your browser's cache and cookies, then set the language again.

If your language isn't listed: While Google has a number of languages available for users, it doesn't encompass everything that exists. If the primary language you want isn't available, Google will prompt you to choose an alternate language. You can add a secondary language using just about every language update method, and it will be visible beneath your primary language.

Google Chrome is one of the most popular web browsers out there, with millions of users worldwide. Naturally, it supports a wide range of languages, which you can easily change from the settings menu. That's right, changing your default language in Chrome only takes a few seconds, and you can easily have the browser UI appear in your preferred language. If you are using Google Chrome for the first time on your laptop or a Mac , and are wondering how to do it, here's what you need to know.

Best web browsers for Windows in 2023

There are plenty of options when it comes to web browsers for Windows, but if you're trying to choose one, here are our top recommendations.

Changes made to the default language in Chrome only apply to its interface. This means only the browser menus and settings appear in your preferred language, and it does not apply to the web content.

Changing the default language in Google Chrome

A simple process that only takes a few minutes.

A screenshot showing the highlighted three dot icon on Google Chrome.

And that's it. You have now changed the default language in Google Chrome successfully. Google Chrome will immediately start serving you all the menus and settings options in your preferred language. Even the error messages that you may encounter when you are unable to, say, visit a particular website for whatever reason, will also be served in your newly selected preferred language.

Using Google Translate to get web content served in your preferred language

Use this if you are particular about reading a specific language.

As I previously mentioned, your preferred language selection in Chrome won't apply to the content on the websites themselves. However, you can use Chrome's built-in Google Translate feature to translate web pages into the language that you want to read. To do that:

By doing this, you are essentially telling Chrome that you prefer reading in a particular language. In my case, I've selected English as my preferred language to inform Chrome that it's the language I usually read. I've also selected Chinese and Spanish as the languages which I want Chrome to automatically translate for me, as I often visit websites that serve content in those languages.

Effortlessly change your language in Google Chrome

Changing the default language in Google Chrome is quite simple, and it gives you plenty of language options to choose from. In fact, those who even want the web content to be served in a particular language can use Chrome's built-in Google Translate tool to have web pages translated from English or any language to the one they prefer automatically.

How to change your language in Google on desktop, mobile, or the Chrome browser

  • You can change the language of Google Chrome on your computer, but only if you have a Windows or Chromebook device.
  • If you don't have a Windows or Chromebook device, you can change the language of your Google search results.
  • On all mobile devices, you must change the default language of your entire device to view the Chrome app in your preferred language.

Google lets you change languages across your Google services , on the Chrome browser, and directly on a web page through translation.

If you want to change your default language or add multiple languages to your Google browser, services, or direct web pages, here's how to do it.

How to change language in Google on desktop

2. Click "Data & personalization."

3. Under General preferences for the web, select "Language."

4. Click the pencil icon to edit your default language from English.

5. Type in the language you want to set or scroll until you find it, then click Select.

6. If you want to add another language and receive a Google translate prompt on web pages, click "Add another language" and repeat the process.

7. To have Google automatically add languages you frequently use in Google services, toggle the relevant slider and wait for it to turn blue.

How to change language in Google on mobile

To change language for Google services and web page translation on Android, you'll first need to open your Settings app and select Google from the list of options. On your account profile, tap "Manage your Google Account" under your email and profile icon. Finally, choose the "Data & personalization" option from the top bar.

On an iPhone, it's much easier to get to your account's language settings . Just open the Gmail app, tap your profile picture or initials in the top right corner, and select "Google Account." From here you should be able to access your data and personalization settings.

How to change language in Google Chrome browser

Google lets you update your language settings across the Chrome browser, but there's a catch - it can only be done in the browser on a Windows PC or Chromebook.

1. Open the Google Chrome app on your Windows or Chromebook computer.

2. Click the three vertical dots icon at the top right corner of your screen, and select "Settings" from the dropdown.

3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Advanced."

4. In the Languages section, click "Language" and wait for a dropdown to appear.

110 new languages are coming to Google Translate

Jun 27, 2024

[[read-time]] min read

We’re using AI to add 110 new languages to Google Translate, including Cantonese, NKo and Tamazight.

  • Bullet points
  • Google Translate expands language support with 110 new languages, the largest expansion ever.
  • AI-powered translation breaks down language barriers for over 614 million more people.
  • Newly added languages include Cantonese, Manx, NKo, Punjabi (Shahmukhi), Tamazight (Amazigh), and Tok Pisin.
  • PaLM 2 language model enables efficient learning of closely related languages.
  • Ongoing collaboration with linguists and native speakers to support more language varieties and spellings.
  • Basic explainer

Google Translate is a tool that helps people understand different languages.

They added 110 new languages, including some major world languages and some spoken by small communities.

This update will help over half a billion people around the world communicate better.

You can use Google Translate on the website or download the app on your phone.

Explore other styles:

Google Translate breaks down language barriers to help people connect and better understand the world around them. We’re always applying the latest technologies so more people can access this tool: In 2022, we added 24 new languages using Zero-Shot Machine Translation, where a machine learning model learns to translate into another language without ever seeing an example. And we announced the 1,000 Languages Initiative, a commitment to build AI models that will support the 1,000 most spoken languages around the world.

Now, we’re using AI to expand the variety of languages we support. Thanks to our PaLM 2 large language model , we’re rolling out 110 new languages to Google Translate, our largest expansion ever.

Translation support for more than half a billion people

From Cantonese to Qʼeqchiʼ, these new languages represent more than 614 million speakers, opening up translations for around 8% of the world’s population. Some are major world languages with over 100 million speakers. Others are spoken by small communities of Indigenous people, and a few have almost no native speakers but active revitalization efforts. About a quarter of the new languages come from Africa, representing our largest expansion of African languages to date, including Fon, Kikongo, Luo, Ga, Swati, Venda and Wolof.

Here are some of the newly supported languages in Google Translate:

  • Afar is a tonal language spoken in Djibouti, Eritrea and Ethiopia. Of all the languages in this launch, Afar had the most volunteer community contributions.
  • Cantonese has long been one of the most requested languages for Google Translate. Because Cantonese often overlaps with Mandarin in writing, it’s tricky to find data and train models.
  • Manx is the Celtic language of the Isle of Man. It almost went extinct with the death of its last native speaker in 1974. But thanks to an island-wide revival movement, there are now thousands of speakers.
  • NKo is a standardized form of the West African Manding languages that unifies many dialects into a common language. Its unique alphabet was invented in 1949, and it has an active research community that develops resources and technology for it today.
  • Punjabi (Shahmukhi) is the variety of Punjabi written in Perso-Arabic script (Shahmukhi), and is the most spoken language in Pakistan.
  • Tamazight (Amazigh) is a Berber language spoken across North Africa. Although there are many dialects, the written form is generally mutually understandable. It’s written in Latin script and Tifinagh script, both of which Google Translate supports.
  • Tok Pisin is an English-based creole and the lingua franca of Papua New Guinea. If you speak English, try translating into Tok Pisin — you might be able to make out the meaning!

How we choose language varieties

There’s a lot to consider when adding new languages to Translate — everything from what varieties we offer, to what specific spellings we use.

Languages have an immense amount of variation: regional varieties, dialects, different spelling standards. In fact, many languages have no one standard form, so it’s impossible to pick a “right” variety. Our approach has been to prioritize the most commonly used varieties of each language. For example, Romani is a language that has many dialects all throughout Europe. Our models produce text that is closest to Southern Vlax Romani, a commonly used variety online. But it also mixes in elements from others, like Northern Vlax and Balkan Romani.

PaLM 2 was a key piece to the puzzle, helping Translate more efficiently learn languages that are closely related to each other, including languages close to Hindi, like Awadhi and Marwadi, and French creoles like Seychellois Creole and Mauritian Creole. As technology advances, and as we continue to partner with expert linguists and native speakers, we’ll support even more language varieties and spelling conventions over time.
