1st Grade Common Core Worksheets

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts (ELA) provide a framework of educational expectations for students in reading, writing, and other language skills. The goals of the CCSS ELA are broken out by grade and subject area, including Reading: Literature, Reading: Informational Text, Foundational Skills, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language. First graders can meet some of these learning goals with adult support and are expected to master the basics of the early stages of reading fiction and non-fiction books, learn writing and language basics, and learn to listen and speak in a group setting. See the subheadings for each ELA category for more information on the specific expectations for students.

Grade 1 English Language Arts Practice Questions

Grade 1 English Language Arts Exam Workbook with Practice Questions

Questions 1-3 pertain to the following story:

My Trip to the Beach Last weekend my family took a trip to the beach. We got there right before noon. The sun was very high in the sky, and it was hot! My sister Julie and I could not wait to swim. We ran right into the ocean, but it was so cold! We only swam for a few minutes before we could not stand the cold anymore. So we ran back out onto the sand. The sun dried us off very quickly. Then we were very hot again! So we ran back into the water. It was still very cold. Julie said, “Bill, let’s get out again.” I said, “Julie, be patient. We might get used to the cold.” And you know what? That is exactly what happened! We swam for a long time. It was a lot of fun!

1. Who is telling this story?

  • Bill’s mother
  • Julie’s father

2. When does the family get to the beach?

  • Before noon

3. What is the lesson of this story?

  • Swimming is hard work.
  • It is good to be patient.
  • The beach is fun.
  • Families are always happy.

Questions 4 and 5 pertain to the following story:

The Play Karen and Rudy were bored on Saturday. They did not know what to do. “I have an idea!” Karen said. “We should put on a play!” “That’s a great idea!” Rudy said. Rudy and Karen asked all their friends to act in the play. “I’ll be a bear,” Sheila said. “I’ll be a deer,” Myron said. “We’ll be campers,” Karen and Rudy said. The kids spent all morning making their costumes. Then they invited their parents to the play. The adults sat in Karen’s backyard and watched the show. It was about two campers who see a deer in the forest. Then they get chased away by a big bear! All the parents loved the play.

4. What is true about Karen?

  • She has good ideas.
  • She likes bears.
  • She goes camping a lot.
  • She does not have a backyard.

5. If this story were turned into a book, it would be

  • more serious
  • less interesting

Questions 6-8 pertain to the following story:

Cats Cats make  wonderful  pets. Like dogs, they can be very loving. They like to rub up against people with their soft fur. When people pet cats, they purr to show they are happy. Cats are also good at telling you what they need. They will meow when they are hungry. They will scratch at a door if they want to be let inside. Sometimes cats like to be left alone, so they will not take up a lot of your time. They sleep more than most other animals. Some cats sleep 16 hours a day! When they wake up, they may want you to play with them. Some cats are shy and would rather hide behind a chair or a desk. But you will see them soon enough when it is feeding time!

6. Read this sentence from the story: Cats make  wonderful  pets.

What does  wonderful  mean, 7. what is true about cats.

  • They all sleep 16 hours a day.
  • They are totally silent.
  • They like to be alone sometimes.
  • They do not like people.

8. How are cats and dogs alike?

  • They both purr.
  • They both sleep most of the day.
  • They both meow.
  • They both can be loving.

Questions 9 and 10 pertain to the following story:

Singing Strings No matter what kind of music you like, you have heard the guitar. It is one of the best-loved instruments. The guitar is a string instrument. Most guitars have six strings. Some have twelve. You can strum the strings all at once. You can also pluck them one at a time. The way you play the strings changes the way the guitar sounds. The strings stretch over a long piece of wood. This is called the neck. A round hole in the middle of the guitar makes it sound louder. Some guitars do not need this hole. They are electric guitars. They plug into speakers. Speakers make electric guitars louder. Quiet or loud. Twelve strings or six. Listen to those strings sing! It’s the fantastic guitar.

9. What is this story about?

  • Shoe strings

10. Read these sentences from a book about guitars:

A guitar has six strings. Plucking the strings makes sound. The violin also has strings. But these strings are played with a bow.

What does this sentence tell you that “Singing Strings” does not?

  • Violins have strings.
  • Guitars have strings.
  • Guitar strings can be plucked.
  • A guitar is played with a bow.

Answers and Explanations

1. A: Julie’s brother is telling this story. She calls her brother “Bill” during the story. This shows that Bill is telling the story.

2. D: Look back at the story to remember its details. The second sentence is “We got there right before noon.”

3. B: Julie and her brother have trouble getting used to the cold water. But he tells her to “be patient. We might get used to the cold.” Julie learns that being patient is good because this is how she gets used to the cold water.

4. A: Putting on the play was Karen’s idea. Rudy says it is a great idea. Since all the adults have fun watching the play, we know that it really was a good idea. This shows that Karen has good ideas.

5. C: Books are a lot longer than stories. We do not know if it would be funnier, so choice A is wrong. We don’t know if it would be more serious or less interesting either. So choices B and D are wrong too.

6. B: The whole story is about how cats are good pets. They like to rub against people. They are good at telling people what they want. They do not take up much of people’s time. Based on these clues, you can guess that  wonderful means  very good .

7. C: The story says, “Sometimes cats like to be left alone, so they will not take up a lot of your time.” Some cats sleep 16 hours a day, but not every cat does this. So choice A is wrong. Cats meow and purr, which are sounds. This means they are not totally silent and choice B is wrong. Choice D is wrong because the story is about how a lot of cats like people.

8. D: The second sentence of the story gives the answer to this question. It says, “Like dogs, they can be very loving.” Only cats purr and meow, so choices C and D are wrong.

9. C:This story is all about the guitar. Do not let the title confuse you. The “Singing Strings” are not real singers. They are the guitar strings that sound like they are singing because they make music.

10. A: The story “Singing Strings” does not say anything about violins. The story says that guitars have strings, so choice B is wrong. It also says these strings can be plucked, so choice C is wrong too.

Skills Children Learn in First Grade Language Arts

JGI/Jamie Grill/Blend Images / Getty Images

Language arts is the name given to the study and improvement of language and communication. It is what many of us refer to as English and grammar, encompassing not only how we read and write but what we read and write.

First-grade language arts instruction builds on the skills children are expected to have learned by the end of kindergarten , moving them from reading readiness to actual reading skills. It also aims to expand their written skills from letters and words to complete sentences and complex thoughts.

While curriculum can vary by state and even school district, there are generally accepted targets children are expected to meet by the end of their first year in elementary school.

Phonics and Phonemic Awareness

Phonics instruction helps children learn the relationships between the letters of written language and the sounds of spoken language.

By the end of first grade, a child should be able to:

  • Recognize digraphs such as sh, ph, th, and ch
  • Recognize sound blends such as fl, tr, sl, sm, sn, bl, gr, and str
  • Recognize diphthongs such as oi, oy, ou, and ow
  • Pronounce word endings in -ed, -s, and -ing
  • Create a group of rhyming words such as "cat," "sat," "hat," and "mat"
  • Count the number of syllables in words

Spelling Skills

The first grader will develop a command of standard English by understanding the spelling rules by which sounds are formed.

By the end of the first grade, a child should be able to:

  • Spell three- and four-letter words with short vowel sounds
  • Identify and create contractions such as "isn't" or "wasn't"
  • Spell words with specific rules such as those with a silent e
  • Recognize compound words such as "baseball" and "bullfrog"
  • Alphabetize words

Reading Skills

The first-grade student will develop the comprehension skills needed to derive meaning or context from what is being read.

By the end of the school year, the child should be able to:

  • Read from left to right and top to bottom of a page
  • Use strategies to decipher the meanings of words (including breaking down multi-syllabic words into morphemes or deriving the meaning through context)
  • Recognize types of sentences including statements, questions, and commands
  • Identify the parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns
  • Recognize the beginning, middle, and end of a story
  • Recognize a variety of narrative genres such as fiction, non-fiction, or poetry
  • Describe the characters and settings of a story
  • Be able to retell a story after reading it
  • Be able to predict events in a story
  • Be able to infer meaning from text and pictures
  • Make a connection between one's self and the text being read
  • Read a level 16 book

Writing and Grammar Skills

Writing skills are foundational to understanding how words and sentences can clearly communicate actions, concepts, and instructions in an organized way. By the end of the school year, a first grader should be able to:

  • Form letters correctly with a pencil
  • Spell grade-appropriate words correctly
  • Understand basic sentence structure
  • Understand the rules of capitalization
  • Know how to end a sentence with the appropriate punctuation
  • Write a sentence for a specific purpose
  • Use descriptive words
  • Use transitional words to show the sequence of events such as "after," "next," or "finally"
  • Understand where a paragraph begins and ends
  • Write a short story with a beginning, middle, and end
  • Write informative reports
  • Edit for understanding and to enhance meaning

Mastering Language Arts Skills

Some children will be able to develop these skills before the end of the first grade. In fact, it is not unusual for verbally gifted children to grasp many of the more advanced concepts while still in kindergarten or even earlier.

This doesn't mean that a child who is less advanced won't catch up or that someone who is gifted in one area won't fall short in another. The learning arts curriculum is designed so that a child with strengths in one area can apply those skills to develop others. By the time that second grade comes along, most children will have the necessary proficiencies to advance comfortably.

For those who don't, tutoring may be needed. To this end, children often have the greatest opportunity for growth when between 6 and 8 years of age.

Rather than waiting for a problem to become serious, tutoring in the first and second grade helps strengthen the foundational skills so that the child is never at the risk of falling behind or becoming frustrated.

12 Fantastic First Grade Assessment Ideas

Move it, show it, mark it, and voice it!

first grade assessment

Which students understanding the material and which ones need more support? Effective teachers actively monitor their students’ understanding and then differentiate so every student can succeed. It’s more than just testing their knowledge. Teachers need to ultimately adapt their teaching to suit students’ needs. That’s why these first grade formative assessment ideas are so important. Teaching remote? Don’t worry, we’ve got ideas for remote learning assessments too!

Gauge student learning while also giving your first graders a chance to move and wiggle.

1. True/False

Designate one corner of the room as the “True” zone and another as the “False” zone. Next, read a true-or-false question related to a recent lesson and ask students to move to the zone representing their answer. Once students have chosen a corner, ask them to pair up and share their thinking with a partner. Listen in on each group and include student’s comments in your class discussion of the correct answer to the question.

Not only does a game of True/False get students up and moving, but the speed at which students move toward the correct answer can tell you a lot about how confident they are in their answers. Likewise, students who seem to be tagging along with other students likely to need additional support in mastering the concept. If it seems like too many students are following others, have each student write down their answer before moving to the corner corresponding to their answer.

2. Act It Out

Inviting students to show what they know through full-body movements not only gives them a chance to wiggle but can also help deepen their understanding of a topic. Across the curriculum, look for ways to have students act out what they’ve learned. Some possibilities include creating short skits to summarize a concept, or becoming the “counters” in a math problem, or representing the hands of a clock, like teachers Stephanie and Loreal did with their first graders!

Gestures or visuals allow you to get a quick read on student understanding. They make the perfect first grade assessment strategies for your toolbox.

3. Traffic Lights

Colored plastic cups from a party store find new purpose when they become “traffic lights” for your first graders. Give each student a set of three cups: one red, one yellow, and one green. Explain the meaning of each color cup (listed below). As you teach a lesson, stop periodically to check in with students. Ask them to stack the cups so only the cup that reflects how they feel about their learning is showing. Remind students that it’s okay to show a red, yellow, or green light. Everyone learns at their own pace! Traffic light cups can also be used during independent work time as a way for students to let their teacher know they need help. An anchor chart  helps students remember what each color means.

  • Red Light = “Stop, I need help.”
  • Green Light = “Keep going, I understand.”
  • Yellow Light = “Slow down, I’m a little confused.”

4. Sign It with ASL

Teach your first graders how to sign the letters A, B, and C. Read a question aloud and give three possible answers, one for each letter. Ask students to wait to hear all responses. Now have students make the alphabet letter sign corresponding to the answer they chose. Instruct them to keep their letter sign in their lap until you call out “Eyes closed, letters up!” Once you’ve gauged the student responses, call out “Letters down and eyes on me!”

These assessment ideas make use of written/drawn responses, making them perfect for quiet times in the classroom.

Like quizzes, but without the stress, adding a Scoot session to your regular line up is a quick way to track student progress. Many first grade Scoot game templates exist online or you can create your own. Basic Scoot game instructions:

  • Prepare your question cards and place them around the room to create stations. Aim for 5-10 question stations depending on how much space and time you can allocate to the game.
  • Decide how much time you will give students to answer each question. This could be 30 seconds to two minutes depending on the question difficulty and the length of response you expect. Once the game begins, if it looks like students need more time, adjust accordingly. Scoot works best when students have the feeling of “racing the clock” but aren’t frustrated by not having enough time to finish their work.
  • Give each student a Scoot sheet with spaces for them to write their answer to the question they find at each station. The questions and the spaces should be numbered so students can easily match them up. Explain that students will work through the question stations in order, but that might not mean starting with question number one. For example, if they begin at station five, they will go to station six when it’s time to change stations.
  • To begin the game, have students start at the station nearest to them. Signal the start of the game with a bell, whistle, smartphone chime, or “ready, set, go!”
  • Start your timer. When time is up, use a sound to signal that it’s time to move to the next station. Repeat this process until all students have visited every station.

Scoot Variation: Instead of having students write their responses on response sheets they take from station to station, give each student a unique marker color or pencil color, and have them contribute a response at each station. For example, students could add a word using a certain letter or sound at each station, or add a number that is greater than/less than the number at each station. Using different colored markers or pencils makes it easier to tell if all students have contributed an answer and who might need additional support.

6. W hiteboards

Give each student a small whiteboard and a marker. Ask students to draw or write their answers and then hold up their whiteboard. Scanning the room, it’s easy to see if students understand the material and which students need extra support.

7. Check-In Bulletin Board

Formative assessments become even easier when they become part of the fabric of the classroom space and routine. This is why Check-In Boards are worth their weight in wall space. At their simplest, Check-In Boards feature a space for each student to add a sticky note or exit ticket sharing something they learned from the lesson. Creating a dedicated space for student feedback makes it easy to see who has contributed and to gauge overall understanding.

Channel your students’ love of talking with these oral assessment ideas.

8. Pair and Share

Simple but effective! As students talk, move around the room to listen in on their conversations. Pair and shares can be used in a variety of ways including:

  • Taking turns being the “teacher” who explains the main points of the lesson
  • Asking a partner to share how they feel about their level of understanding and what questions they still have about the topic
  • Discussing a question posed by the teacher
  • Applying what they’ve learned to a new situation

Using a large piece of cardboard and a utility knife, create a TV frame cut out. Make several additional TV frames so each small group can have their own frame. Write a selection of review questions on the board. Divide the class into small groups and invite students to take turns presenting their own 2-minute “TV show” in response to one of the review questions.

First Grade Assessment Ideas for Online Learning

Take advantage of these simple video call assessment ideas and helpful online tools to gauge student learning while teaching remotely.

10. Thumb-o-Meter

Before continuing on with a lesson, ask students to show a thumbs up, thumbs down or sideways thumb to show how they feel about their level of understanding:

  • Thumbs up = “I get it!” or “I can do it!”
  • Thumbs down = “I don’t get it!” or “I need help!”
  • Thumb to the side = “I kind of get it.” or “I could use some more practice.”

Assessments that feel like games are a stress-free way to learn more about what your students know. Using Kahoot as an assessment tool can be as simple as setting up a quick game of 10 questions for students to complete independently. As a class, Kahoot can be used to create a game show styled event. Students can respond via the chat window of their video conference platform or by writing their answer on paper and then holding it in front of the camera.

12. Google Forms

Google Forms are an indispensable tool for teaching online. They allow you to quickly create a survey with lots of different kinds of questions including multiple choice, short answer, long answer, checkboxes, and more. Use them for single question polls to take the pulse of the classroom, daily check-ins, exit tickets, or quizzes that grade themselves. Some teachers are even taking Google Forms to a whole new level by making them into a mystery game!
