If you’re looking to start a business with high earning potential, you’ve probably looked into some tech business ideas.
And why wouldn’t you? In 2019, the estimated economic output of the technology industry was $1.8 trillion, comprising over 10% of the national economy, according to CompTIA. What’s more, the average successful startup exit (via either acquisition or IPO) has sat at $242.9 million since 2007.
However, for every successful startup exit, there are hundreds if not thousands of startups that have failed. So if you’re an entrepreneur hoping to hit it big in the technology sector, you need to start with a strong tech business idea.
In an industry defined by innovation and disruption, what constitutes a “good” tech business idea is constantly changing. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of tech business ideas that are poised for extreme growth in the coming years.
What is a tech business?
Tech businesses provide products and services that have applications across multiple industries — but at their core, they pertain to the research, development and distribution of technology-based goods. This includes businesses that manufacture electronics (like Apple), create software (like Salesforce), provide services relating to information technology (like Google) and more.
The best part about our technology business ideas is that they don’t require a lot of overhead—you can start small and grow over time. However, you will need some level of technical knowledge to be able to successfully start a business in the industry. If you don’t have any tech experience, consider starting with a coding bootcamp.
Here are some of the top tech business ideas, including some recommendations from tech entrepreneurs themselves.
1. Food tech
Our first recommendation comes from Phil Strazzulla, founder of HR software company SelectSoftware. Strazzulla sees the food tech sector as a major growth industry in the coming years:
“Companies like Beyond Meat are just the beginning of businesses engineering eco-friendly and healthy food that is as delicious as our current diet. The science is now there, and the market for next-generation food is literally in the trillions of dollars, and it grows just as quickly as the world's population.”
2. Web design
One tech business idea that will never go out of style is website design. That’s because pretty much every business needs a professional-looking website in order to appear reputable and build their brand.
Web design encompasses a range of different services, including graphic design, interface design, copywriting, UX design, and SEO. According to IBISWorld , the web design business has grown at a rate of 6.6% over the last five years, and generated $38 billion in revenue in 2019, meaning you can rely on there being a market for this tech business idea for years to come.
3. Extended reality
Extended reality technology encompasses both augmented reality, or AR, and virtual reality, or VR, technologies. Kenny Trinh, editor of tech review publication Net Books News, sees extended reality technology proliferating in the coming years.
"In 2020, we’ll see more and more businesses applying extended reality to their brands to stand out from the competition and deliver a better customer experience,” says Trinh. “In fact, some businesses have been doing that already.”
Trinh points to the eco-friendly water packaging project W-in-a-Box, which uses AR to further explain the benefits of their product.
4. Robotics
Robotics is a bit of a catch-all term that encompasses mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, information engineering, computer science and other related disciplines. The goal of robotics is to create machines that can move and react to sensory input. According to Statista , this industry is expected to grow from $80 billion in annual revenue in 2019 to over $200 billion in annual revenue by 2025.
5. Customer experience management, or CXM
Ian Kelly, VP of operations for a CBD oil company called NuLeaf, believes customer experience management platforms like ZenDesk will soon make customer relationship management platforms, or CRMs, obsolete.
"While a CRM can help you manage customer details, a CXM unifies all sales, marketing and customer service conversations into a single silo so that your customers are treated like the loyal fan-base they are,” says Kelly. “No more hitting your customer over the head with repeat promos, selling them on services/products they already have or letting them slip through the cracks when they've bought and never been properly onboarded.”
6. Influencer marketing
Influencer marketing is an industry enabled by social media platforms like Instagram involving endorsements and product placements from individuals or organizations who possess a certain level of expertise or social influence in their respective fields. While not just anyone can be an influencer, if you possess some level of unique knowledge or a lot of charisma, you can launch a business by gathering a social media following and hiring an influencer marketing agency to connect you with brands.
On the flip side, you can also launch a business focused on connecting brands with the right influencers for their products and mission.
7. Content automation
With content and social media becoming an ever-growing part of many businesses’ marketing plans, Gleb Myrko, an analyst at the market research firm Freedonia Group, believes content automation software presents a great opportunity for tech entrepreneurs.
"Businesses today have accounts on all different social media channels like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, etc. All of these channels require different approaches to content planning, content production and account management and analytics,” says Myrko. “There’s still not a widely applied tool for omnichannel management, promotion and analytics for the most popular social media. We need an all-in-one hub where marketers can analyze data/performance, as well as manage and promote their accounts on different social media channels in a more centralized, convenient and effective manner.”
8. Artificial intelligence
The term “artificial intelligence" is used to describe technologies pertaining to machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing and more. Although artificial intelligence is a technology that has been around for quite some time, as it becomes increasingly sophisticated, its market potential is growing as well.
Statista reports that the industry grew by 154% in 2019 alone—making it a great tech sector to build a business around.
9. Podcasting
If you’ve been paying attention to innovations in content over the past few years, you’re probably aware of the exploding popularity of podcasts. Today, 51% of the U.S. population has listened to a podcast, and podcaster Dre Baldwin sees podcasting’s prospects only increasing in the coming years.
“Entrepreneurs need to start building their podcast content library ASAP,” Baldwin says. “More and more people are consuming media on the go; audiobooks and podcasts are at the forefront of this. Any entrepreneur or business entity that wants the attention of consumers needs to be in their ears, literally.”
How Much Do You Need?
10. Streaming service
Services like Netflix and Disney+ get most of the attention when it comes to streaming services, but there is plenty of opportunity to start a streaming service for more niche content. For example, you can create a streaming service where users can upload instructional videos or a streaming service designed specifically for children’s content. You could also develop a platform for live streaming (like Twitch) or streaming music (like Spotify).
The global outlook on the streaming service industry is overwhelmingly positive. In 2019, streaming services generated $25 billion in revenue. By 2025, that number is expected to rise to $30 billion, according to Statista.
11. 3D printing
One of the more exciting technologies developed during the 2010s is 3D printing, which allows users to build a three-dimensional object from a computer-aided design model. Shayne Sherman, CEO of TechLoris, believes 3D printing will have increased importance in the next decade as the technology continues to become more sophisticated.
"There will always be the need for production companies, but just as the advent of the assembly line changed production, so too has 3D printing,” Sherman says. “The ability to manufacture whole components in single pieces has created a serious demand, especially in the medical fields. This demand means that 3D printing companies are set to grow exponentially, and if you can get into the business, it's a solid choice for the coming years.”
12. E-commerce
E-commerce is another technology that has been around for a while, but still has growth potential. Over the last year, Statista reports that e-commerce sales grew from $500 billion to nearly $550 billion.
If you have a unique idea for an e-commerce store, you can launch your own e-commerce business from the comfort of your home. No product in mind? Not to worry; dropshipping allows you to start an e-commerce business with products you are not responsible for warehousing or shipping.
If you want to grab a bigger share of the market, you could also take the time to develop your own e-commerce platform or marketplace. Just keep in mind that the e-commerce platform space is already dominated by giants like Shopify and Amazon. Therefore, if you want to start your own e-commerce platform, we suggest focusing on a niche market.
13. Portable charging devices
Mobile devices go with us everywhere nowadays, but having your phone battery die on you while you’re out is still a far too common problem. That’s what’s driving the growth of the portable phone charging industry.
According to data published by BCC Research, the portable charging device market is expected to grow by 6.6% year over year from 2017 to 2022. Growth is driven by the fact that many newer phone models have lower battery capacity.
"Growing urbanization, rising disposable income and increasing mobile phone penetration will boost the mobile charger market around the globe,” according to the report’s author Mohammed Javed. “Increasing penetration of high-specification electronic gadgets/devices that drain batteries at faster rates will further boost the mobile charger market in the near future.”
14. Publishing e-books
An e-book is a book made available in digital form. If you’re a writer, there is a growing market for books published online. Businesses are creating e-books as a way to market their brand, and aspiring authors of fiction and nonfiction publish e-books as a way to reach more customers and grow their readership.
In 2019 alone, revenue generated from e-books topped $1.3 billion, and that number will rise to $1.6 billion by 2024, Statista reports.
15. Fitness tech
Technology has applications in nearly every industry — including the fitness industry. We’ve already seen new technologies like FitBit, Peloton and Strava change how people exercise, and more innovation is on the horizon. That’s the belief of Jared Weitz, founder of United Capital Source Inc.
"Fitness technology is an area of continued growth. Whether it is creating products like fitness trackers, wireless earbuds or smartwatches that have multiple functions, the market is constantly seeking new gear and technology,” Weitz says. “This niche is expanding from tangible fitness products to the apps and data that marry the physical and digital together. Combine a high-tech device with an app related to exercise or diet and you will be setting yourself up for success in 2020 and beyond.”
16. Online teaching
Do you know a foreign language? Can you build a treehouse? Do you cook really good soup? Then you can make money sharing your knowledge and expertise online. Thanks to services like Teachable and Udemy, teachers can now build their own online classes, sell them to students and teach the entire class online. If you’re a good teacher and know how to market your class, you can earn a livable wage by teaching your skills to others through the internet.
17. Mobile application development
Every business needs a website. And the way the market is trending, soon every business will also need their own mobile app. This presents an exciting opportunity for individuals skilled in app development. Successful companies like Braze and Leanplum have built their entire business around developing apps for others.
There is really an endless supply of app ideas. There were 194 billion app downloads in 2018 alone, and that number is only expected to climb. So strike while the iron is hot.
18. Search engine optimization consultant
Google is still an essential part of many business’s marketing strategies. They need to be able to appear as a top result in Google Search for keywords related to their business. That means they need someone who is skilled in search engine optimization, or SEO, to help them. Some businesses hire people to perform SEO in-house, but many organizations also work with freelancers or third-party agencies to implement an SEO strategy. If you can train yourself in SEO and keep up with its ever-changing trends, you can start a business providing SEO services to other organizations.
19. Social media consultant
If you’re not into SEO, but are good on social media, you can work with businesses to help them generate likes, shares, retweets, followers, comments, clicks and more as a social media marketer . In this role, you’ll consult with companies and help them manage their social profiles, spread content across the web and build their brand.
What’s more, the startup cost to be a social media marketer is minimal and can be done from your own home. Just be sure to buff up your social media skills and keep up with the latest trends and platforms.
20. Drone videography
If you own a drone and know how to use a camera, there’s a market for your services. Commercial and residential real estate agents are increasingly using aerial shots as a way to market their buildings and property. You can find real estate agents in your area using platforms like Zillow. Then reach out and offer up your services. Other industries, such as agriculture, events and more have uses for drones, as well.
21. Cybersecurity or IT consulting
Businesses today are increasingly threatened by cyberattacks, making the need for IT consultants greater than ever. As an IT consultant, you can help businesses evaluate their security systems, run tests and offer advice on how they can better protect themselves from cyberhackers.
More generally, an IT consultant can help businesses set up their computers and troubleshoot any general issues.
22. Venture capitalist
A vast majority of tech startups are backed by venture funding. If you have an interest in the tech space, but don’t have any technical knowledge yourself, you can try raising some money and becoming a venture capitalist or angel investor.
Similar to being an influencer, a venture capitalist isn’t something you can simply become overnight. That’s because being a venture capitalist requires allowing others to trust you with their money.
You need to start small and make some solid investments in order to make a name for yourself. Many independent investors join a VC fund for a while before striking off and starting their own fund.
23. Startup incubator
Another way to get involved in the tech world without having a lot of technical experience is to create your own startup incubator. The job of an incubator is to help startups plan and launch their business successfully. Services provided may include management training, office space and mentorship opportunities.
Of course, you’ll need some background in business to be able to successfully launch an incubator. The cost of creating your own incubator and attracting founders may also be difficult to muster. Many incubators start small and grow over time once they have successfully helped multiple startups enter the market.
24. Antivirus developer
An antivirus developer is a highly specific sort of tech business idea that pertains to the creation of antivirus software that can help businesses protect critical data. Antivirus software can be created using a variety of different programming languages. The overall goal of an antivirus is to detect and remove malware before it impacts a computer’s systems. Start networking with local businesses in your area to find out if there's a need for this service.
25. Domain name broker
Being a domain name broker is similar to being a stockbroker, except instead of stocks, you sell domain names. To get started you need a little capital to buy some domain names. You’ll then need to educate yourself so that you’ll be able to predict domain name requirements in the future.
So like most of the businesses on this list, it will take some work to get started. But everyone needs a domain name, so there will always be a market for this service.
The bottom line
We hope our list has helped you figure out which tech business idea is the right fit for your skills and interests. Regardless of the route you choose to take, you’ll need to write a business plan, create a business entity and maybe take out a business loan to get your startup off the ground.

I'm Pat Walls and I created Starter Story - a website dedicated to helping people start businesses. We interview entrepreneurs from around the world about how they started and grew their businesses.

Our 4,418 case studies show you how ordinary people built businesses to millions in revenue - all starting from a simple idea or side project.
These aren’t just case studies - they are real stories, from real founders who share their most intimate details with you - down to the exact amount of money they are making.
How did you come up with the idea? How did you find your first 10 customers? How much money are you making?
Our 4,418 case studies break down these exact questions. Every industry, trend, and how much money you can make.
You’ll realize these people are just like you - and that, deep down, you can do it too.

Building a business is lonely. And it’s easy to feel stuck.
"How do you take the first step? How do you know you’re making the ‘right’ progress every day?
You finally have a place where you can ask these questions, get advice, and see exactly how successful founders did it before you.
You’re no longer building alone, because you have thousands of founders who are telling you to keep going.

I love this website.
Love Starter Story's transparency.
You can't find this information anywhere else.

An incredible community - it's the only reason I have Slack on my phone.

Starter Story has been with me on my journey to over 28K YouTube subscribers. It’s an incredible place to learn how to build a successful business - fast.

I don't think I ever would have taken the first step without Starter Story.

Starter Story gave me permission to start a business. Was watching in the sidelines for years but seeing others do it helped me realize there’s nothing exclusive about it. Now I run my own!
I made over $5,000 from my Starter Story membership in a week!

It’s really magical to have an accountability group when you’re like me and have been working solo for a long time.

I feel like I'm shipping and getting things done like never before.

At first I was skeptical if this was worth the money. In hindsight, Starter Story has been one of the best investments I've made.

I've made amazing connections in a very short amount of time. The founders in this community are accomplished, smart, savvy, and business gritty people.

Immediately after joining the Starter Story community, a founder with 175K followers offered to help ME. Unbelievable.
What Pat Walls has built with Starter Story is awesome.
The most powerful platform if you want to start a business.

This community is full people who have actually started something. So the connections and learnings are based on a shared commitment to action. That shit is powerful.

You might have heard the phrase – an idea can change your life.
As of 2021, 16% of Americans were actively involved in startups , this shows that most of the American population were actively working on a startup. This proves that young business brains are actively participating in startups.
As a result of the pandemic, people are now majorly dependent on the power of the internet. This era is of technology startup ideas.
If you have the best startup ideas based on technology, now would be the time to unleash them. If not, here is a list of 25 new startup ideas that are digital/online.
Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI, is all the rage in this era. Artificial Intelligence is what the name suggests, artificially generated Intelligence.
Simply put, it is the ability of machines (computers or a robot) to perform tasks that are usually associated with intelligent beings.
When starting an AI business, you can choose from existing AI or bespoke (custom) AI.
While the previous one has pre-existing solutions, the latter needs new, customized solutions.
Developing an AI-based product is a simple four-step process:
- Run the problem-solution fit test
- Gather data
- Build the AI product
- Keep on improving
A tip to keep in mind before developing an AI solution is to check whether a product for the said problem exists. If it does, use it as a base for your application/software to save time, effort, and money.
Telehealth is the connection between patients and healthcare providers. It allows you to choose between two telehealth solutions.
(i) Synchronous solutions – applications that connect the patient to their healthcare provider through audiovisual connections.
(ii) Asynchronous solutions – allow the medical practitioner to access the patient’s medical history through online platforms.
If you are interested in starting a business based on telehealth, here is what you should do:
- Study the telemedicine/telehealth laws in your state
- Analyze the competition
- Plan the features and set the price
Financially, if you plan to develop custom software, the software development cost can go around $50,000 (excluding the hardware cost). A cheaper option would be using white-label telemedicine or telehealth application which would cost approximately $15,000.
However, this option restricts your ability to provide unique and innovative features.
One of the many industries that boomed during the pandemic is EdTech.
The development of this technology was so impactful that it has continued to grow even in the post-pandemic world.
The following are the steps to build your own EdTech business:
- Narrow down your market
- Validate your concept
- Create a one-of-a-kind value proposition
- Select a sensible business model
- Create the right team
- Build a minimum viable product /proof of concept
- Raise funds
- Focus on growth
When it comes to innovative startup ideas, eCommerce is the term that rings a bell. Companies like Amazon and Alibaba are the leading examples of eCommerce businesses.
To grab this opportunity, you need to follow the steps given below:
- Identify your niche by researching the market
- Choose a business name and structure
- Request an EIN
- Get necessary permits and licenses
- Select a platform and build your eCommerce website
- Product development or sourcing (and listing)
- Promote your online store
The cost of starting an eCommerce business varies depending on the legalities of the area you plan on opening this business. When opening an eCommerce business, you must keep two rules in mind: Start small and carry out multi-channel marketing.
For decades, we have thought that robots are the future. The future, however, is NOW as we are developing robots for almost every possible task, including deliveries. Yes, you heard that right, we can now use robots to deliver groceries, food, or packages.
You can either build delivery robots or rent/buy them to open a delivery business. eCommerce businesses like Amazon have already started using robots to deliver their products. These robots are not humanoids but a container with wheels, which makes sense since their primary goal is delivering the product.
While building a robot may cost anywhere from $5000 to $1,75,000 (depending on the features you want to include), you can rent them for more or less a similar cost.
The increasing popularity of Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) has made it easier for entrepreneurs to use Robo-tech to deliver things to their customers.
Virtual Reality or Augmented Reality has grown tremendously in the past three years. Before the pandemic, VR was all the rage in the gaming industry. Since the pandemic, however, it has been used in business for several purposes, including training through AR or orientation through VR.
All you need to do is ask yourself two questions:
(i) What is the problem I am trying to solve? (ii) Is VR/AR the only solution to that problem?
Once you are clear with that, you can start with the same procedure mentioned in the first point (Artificial Intelligence).
This is the era of quick replies. Irrespective of the type of business, if you do not respond quickly to your customers, you lose them instantly. This is where live chat services come to light. Customers expect businesses to answer their queries in real-time If you can put a good team together, you can offer this service.

A simple tweet or reel on social media can influence millions of people. Today, approximately 80% of the ROI for brands comes from social media influencers. At present, Instagram influencing alone is a $1.7 billion industry.

Web development firms are distinct from web design firms in that a web design firm creates layouts and visuals for a website owner. 12. Biotech startup

Your “techspertise” is in demand. Here is how to own it.

It comes as no surprise that technology ranks as one of the fastest-growing and most in-demand industries in the world. It’s what powers innovation, communication and information, and its impact on productivity and success in the public and private sector is immeasurable.
If you are a techie but aren’t fluent in HTML, you’ll be happy to know that the best opportunities for entrepreneurs don’t all involve coding and programming; there is something for technophiles of all interests and aptitudes. It’s really all about leveraging technology to connect what you do best to the audience that needs it. Here are some of the best opportunities for success in the tech space.
Cybersecurity services provider
Nearly 80% of IT leaders running the technology services of businesses believe they are not sufficiently protected from cybersecurity threats. There is a great need for experts who have the specialized background and training to help defend organizations from the malware, phishing schemes, data breaches, WiFi hacking and email hijacking that threaten their business and their bottom line. So much so that the Bureau of Labor and Statistics has estimated 31% growth in this specialized service by 2029.
In addition to a college or an advanced degree in computer science or information technology, having credentials in the form of reputable certifications will help to position you as a true expert.
If you can use your technical prowess to support the technological needs of others from set-up to troubleshooting, you can build a thriving business out of it. The ability to protect and troubleshoot the devices people rely on is tremendously valuable in a world where connectivity is the key to productivity and efficiency. As a tech superhero, you will need to be competent and confident in the areas of backup recovery, cloud services, data management and security and tech training, to name a few.
Your expert, on-demand services can translate to substantial income , depending on your experience, client volume and pricing structure. For example, if you work for a company and charge a monthly retainer, you may be able to charge $100-$200 per user per month; for pay-as-you-go services, you may command $100-$200 per hour.
Domain name broker
Buying and selling web domain names can be a profitable venture for those with high-level negotiating skills and a great deal of resourcefulness and fortitude. Today, there are over 363.5 million registered domain names , the most popular still the “.com” extension, with new extensions introduced all the time. This means that those with a stake in acquiring domain names bearing those extensions will look to experts for help. The best brokers know what’s trending and valuable through deep keyword research, identify prospective domain owners, then broker deals with interested parties at a fair market price.
Brokers do the leg work and simplify the process for the parties involved and for their services earn either a flat rate, or in most cases a 10%-20% commission based on the selling price. Building a domain brokerage business takes time and can be a tedious process, but also has the potential to pay off in a big way — especially when you consider the $2 billion valuation of the annual domain resale market.

Certified electronics waste management and recycling consultant
E-waste, such as discarded computers, TVs, mobile phones, tablets, game consoles and other appliances and electronic devices, are toxic to landfills, and managing their disposal or recycling can be a good business opportunity for the environmentally-minded entrepreneur. It's staggering to think that in 2019, only 17% of the world’s 53.6 million tons of e-waste was recycled; however, many are finding ways to make a difference, so much so that the industry, valued at $41.97 billion in 2019, is expected to reach $102.62 billion by 2027 .
Entry into this thriving market requires special knowledge and training about how to extract and recycle precious metals and safely dispose of hazardous materials. A major key to success is approaching prospective customers with a compelling proposal designed to raise awareness of the positive impact your recycling services will have on the environment.
E-learning educator
From students who are home-schooled or in need of academic support to adults interested in learning a new skill or nurturing a hobby, e-learning is an exploding industry. In 2019, it was a $200 billion business; by 2024 it is expected to reach $375 billion . The COVID-19 pandemic has fueled the growth of this field, but new technologies are propelling it to new heights. As an educator-entrepreneur ready to enter the e-learning space, you can create your own curriculum and leverage the tools that man educational platforms offer. Some are synchronous and feature live learning, while others are asynchronous and offer pre-recorded, on-demand courses — which has the potential to create a long-term passive income.
In either case, experienced teachers can make the world their classroom by reaching those in search of academic remediation, enrichment or pursuing their passions. For those still developing their teaching or tutoring skills, a good first step may be working with students looking for help on established platforms like Tutor or Skillshare .
Social media consultant
With nearly 300 million users in the U.S. alone, social media has become one of the most essential business marketing tools to engage with new and prospective customers. Yet many companies lack the social media skills or resources to effectively execute a social campaign.
Marketing professionals with a great eye for attention-grabbing imagery, a knack for app-aided graphic design , and clever short-form copy skills that encourage engagement can be a compelling proposition for businesses seeking a strong social media presence. Create spec accounts that showcase your aptitude and talents, and share some compelling facts and stats that speak to the power of the top-performing platforms .
SEO consultant
There is tremendous value in professionals who know how to leverage the power of content, keywords, backlinks and meta descriptions to help businesses increase their online traffic and conversions. For those with expertise in search engine optimization (SEO), having the ability to unlock what many companies consider the key to digital success can be the makings of a thriving SEO consulting business. While a specialized degree is not a requirement, you will need a background in marketing and information technology or communications. You’ll also need to establish a track record of optimizing websites for high rankings on popular search engines and possess the ability to create clear strategies that meet your clients’ objectives.
It could also help to pursue a certificate in SEO from a reputable and recognized program, such as Google Analytics Academy , Moz or HubSpot . The average annual salary for an SEO specialist is $69,491; however, the potential is far greater as you scale up your business with multiple clients and additional SEO staff to serve them.
3D printing service provider
3D, or additive, printing produces a physical item through a thermoplastic printing process and a computer to read the product’s digital design.
It’s the stuff that engineers’ and designers’ dreams are made of, and the field has big possibilities for those with the drive to build a business around it. The range of products a 3D print production can create is as vast as your imagination. Among the most requested 3D items are eyeglass frames, jewelry, toys and vases. Prototyping for businesses also represents a sizable share of the 3D printing market, which is expected to reach $62.79 billion by 2028 .
The on-demand business model that a 3D printing company enjoys is efficient: you can use less material, produce less waste and because the plastic products may weigh less than their heavily manufactured counterparts, they may also cost less to ship. A business like this may also require less overhead, other than some space in your home, a computer with CAD software, and a 3D printer and filament. If you don’t want to invest in a printer, which costs $5,000-$6,000 on average, you can upload your designs to platforms such as Shapeways , sell them on your own site, and then have Shapeways produce the item for a percentage of the sale price.

Can you tell the difference between Windows and Ubuntu? If you’re a self-professed technology geek with a business acumen, starting a tech business would be right up your alley.
You can open a cell phone repair shop, develop an app and post it on the play or app store, or start a YouTube channel that you can monetize. You can also try retailing and selling webcams and other technology products. We’ve come up with a list of tech business ideas that you can explore. See if something appeals to you.
1. Cell Phone Repair

At least one smartphone screen breaks every second in the US, a cell phone repair company says. Not all Americans, however, can afford to toss their damaged smartphones, and buy a new one or upgrade. That’s why the cell phone repair industry has continued to thrive, earning around $4 billion a year. If you are skilled at fixing cell phones, this may be your chance to set up your own business.
Before you promote your services, it’s important that you decide what you’re going to offer. Will you be doing screen repair and replacement, battery replacement, or software-related repairs? Do you plan to set up a shop, or just work from home and promote your business online? You will find the answers to your questions as you research and assess the market. What’s important is that you are able to offer reliable and value-added services so you can quickly build up a loyal customer base.
2. Crypto Mining

Are you looking to start your own cryptocurrency mining business? You’re not alone. The number of cryptominers is increasing rapidly due to the massive demand for bitcoin and other digital currencies. Across the globe, the crypto mining market is predicted to surpass $5 billion by 2028. Crypto mining refers to the verification and currency creation process. It is legal in the US, but you may still need to look at local regulations.
Starting a crypto mining business is challenging, but not impossible. You will need high-powered computers, mining software, and an eWallet or an encrypted online bank account. Take note that only verified cryptominers can mine. To become one, you have to join a mining pool online and learn the extremely complex process of crypto mining. Aside from the mining software, which you can download, make sure you also have the right software to protect yourself from illegal attacks. It takes money and time to build a crypto mining business, but once you’re up and running, you’ll be making money real fast.
3. App Development

Did you ever think about how often you use mobile apps? Probably many times a day, which is why apps are among the world’s fastest growing industries. The global app market is worth more than $465 billion and expected to expand nearly 40% by 2026. If you have some tech skills, you could start your own app business and ride that growth to great success.
Getting there, however, will not be as easy as unlocking your phone. First, you’ll need a great idea for your first app. If you’ve already got that, you’ll need to do the build out and coding, then have the app vetted and approved by major app outlets, like Apple and Google. And that’s when the real work begins — convincing smartphone owners that your app is more appealing and valuable than the millions of other apps competing for their attention.
You might think that’s the easy part, but many entrepreneurs make that same mistake. Even the most brilliant apps need a well-executed marketing strategy to take off. Any fool can make an app. The hard part is getting people to use it.
4. Ecommerce Business

Do you have a great business idea, but don’t know where to start? These days, the best way to get started is often by turning to the internet, where a wide variety of ecommerce businesses have found great success in recent years. Of course you know about Amazon, but there are also millions of smaller businesses that make up what is now a $4 trillion global industry.
With countless people stuck at home, ecommerce revenues increased by more than a quarter in 2020, and they’s still growing, so opportunity in this market remains strong. You will need an appealing, in-demand product, a simple, easy-to-use website, and a sharp marketing plan, but if you’re willing to invest a good chunk of your time and money your new ecommerce business will have a great shot at success. Somebody’s got to be the next Jeff Bezos, right?
5. Digital Marketing Agency

With many people staying at home and working remotely because of the pandemic, companies have also gone online and undertaken digital marketing initiatives to keep their target markets engaged. Global digital marketing is booming right now, and expected to more than double to $786 billion by 2026.
If you’re looking to start your own digital marketing business, you’re in luck. There has never been a better time to do it. Just catch up on the latest industry trends and know the steps in setting up a business. Keep in mind that since this is a relatively new industry, there are no concrete guidelines for success, but some insights into how other companies grew their own businesses can be helpful. Read and learn everything you can about the business before uploading your first social media post or your first digital ad. Once you’ve done that, you should be able to get the hang of digital marketing!
6. Social Media Management

Social media is among the world’s fastest-growing industries, with its 20% annual expansion in the last five years expected to increase to stunning 25% annual growth through 2026. By then it will be nearly a trillion dollar industry, which means that now is a great time to get in on the action and ride this wave.
Starting a social media business can be as simple as starting a blog about the media industry on LinkedIn or as complex as creating a fully-fledged Instagram business with lots of people using your content and products. With any social media business, the marketing will be absolutely crucial. The primary goal will be to connect with your target audience on the relevant platform. This means that before you even get started, you should do some research and experimentation to decide which platform and its user profile best fits you and your interests. From there, you’ll just need to find your niche to start building a respected brand.
7. IT Consulting

As our world becomes increasingly digital, it’s no surprise that more and more businesses need guidance and insight on how to adapt and take advantage of this new technological landscape. This helps explain why IT consulting in the United States has been growing fast and is already worth more than half a trillion dollars. The industry is expected to expand further in the years ahead, which means now is a fantastic time to start your own IT consulting firm and get in on the action.
The crucial element is expertise. If you have a computer science, IT or engineering degree and have spent a few years doing related work at a respectable consulting or tech firm, you have the resume needed to become an IT consultant. You’ll need to build a strong website and register your business, but you could soon be offering your tech insights to top businesses. Provide quality consulting for the first few clients, and you’ll be well on your way to building a reputation, getting some referrals and being a successful entrepreneur.
8. Internet Service Provider

With the world’s digital transformation, the internet has become an essential service. Globally, internet service providers earned about $450 billion in 2020. The market is still growing and there are plenty of opportunities even for new players like you, so you might want to start setting up an internet service provider business now.
Whether you are looking to start small or compete with the giants, you will need to install servers, cable lines and other equipment. It’s a good idea to do research and find answers to frequently asked questions like, how much investment do you need, how will you raise funds, what are the legal and technical issues, and how to find customers.
Some people do not think that the internet is something they can make money from because it is too easy for people to switch between networks. But if you know how to position your products and services correctly, then it will be much easier for people to stick with you.
9. Web Hosting Service

Are you looking to start your own web hosting business? If so, you’re in luck!
Nearly every business in the world needs its own website these days, which is driving sharply increased demand. In fact, the global web hosting industry is expected to triple by 2028, reaching $267 billion in revenue. This is one of the world’s fastest-growing markets, and you could get it now and ride this growth wave to serious success.
First you’ll probably want to brush up on your know-how, and there are lots of free and affordable online courses out there to give you a good grasp. Next you’ll likely want to hire a technician or two to do the heavy lifting of web hosting and website services. Finally, before you start marketing your services, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got all the required licenses and certifications.
Now you’re ready to start hosting websites and providing a crucial service to countless businesses.
10. 3D Printing

So you’ve decided to start a 3D printing business. That’s great! A strong demand for three-dimensional customized products is driving the rapid growth of the global 3D printing market, which was estimated at $16 billion in 2021. The market is expected to grow 24% per year through 2028 due to increased demand for prototypes, models and artistic designs in various industries like aerospace, automotive, health care and more.
You will need to understand first the regulations and legal issues affecting the industry. For example, the use of 3D printers is not regulated but the medical products that are produced through 3D printing are regulated by the FDA. A license is also needed for 3D printers that are used to make weapons. If a design used to create a 3D model is covered by intellectual property rights, printing the model would infringe those rights. You’ll also need to make a hefty investment upfront to get your business up and running, but the benefits could be immense.
11. Computer Repair

Businesses stand to lose customers and important data whenever their computer systems are down. Properly maintaining computers through regular cleaning, hard drive updates, and virus prevention can prevent breakdowns and extend a computer’s shelf life to up to eight years, computer security firm Norton says.
That’s why demand is high for computer maintenance and repair services. The US computer and electronics repair industry is valued at $19 billion. If you’re knowledgeable about computers and have troubleshooting skills, consider starting a computer repair business.
This type of business can be run from home, with minimal startup and overhead costs. But you’ll still need to register your business and comply with applicable regulations. Obtaining certifications on top of a bachelor or associate degree will increase your value and attract more clients so it’s wise to apply for these. Computer repair technicians mostly study computer science, IT, or computer information systems. It’s also important to be abreast of the latest trends. With your impressive skills, you’ll be making big profits in no time.
12. YouTube Channel

So you want to start a YouTube business? Great idea! The opportunities for online businesses are endless these days, and video platforms like YouTube are one of the best places to start. YouTube’s ad revenue increased a stunning 25 percent in 2021, which means now is a great time to get in on the action.
There’s no doubt that YouTube is a powerful business tool. But it can be a little tricky to know the best way to start a YouTube business. If you have some expertise or skill that is in great demand, you’ll want to create a series of videos and start your own YouTube channel. From there, you’ll need to generate visitors, and a great way to do that is to post about your videos and expertise across all social media, and tell your family and friends.
As you keep delivering quality content, you should be able to start generate subscriptions, and that’s when the ad dollars start rolling in.
13. Web Design

Do you know of any legit business that doesn’t have a website? That’s right — in today’s digital world, businesses need to have a decent website if they expect to be taken seriously. That’s why web design is a $40 billion industry that’s seeing steady growth as the number of new US businesses hits record highs. All those new companies will need websites, which means right now is a great time to start your own web design business and design a bright future.
First, if you’re not already an established graphic designer, you will need a bit of training. But there are many helpful options out there, including online educational platforms that offer subscriptions that allow you to take as many classes as you want. Alternatively, many universities offer affordable website design certification courses. Once that’s sorted, the next crucial step will be building your own website, which has to be fantastic or nobody will trust your skills.
With some quality social media marketing, you should be able to rope in a client or two. Impress them and you’ll be on the road to design success.
14. SEO Consulting

If you know what needs to be done for a website to gain more traffic, it’s time for you to start your own SEO consulting business. SEO, or search engine optimization, is a booming field and more people are getting into it. There’s still a huge need for professionals with the right skills and knowledge. SEO and internet marketing consultants in the US earned around $55 billion in 2022. As more businesses seek assistance in establishing or expanding their online presence, the SEO consulting market is expected to grow at least 5% per year through 2027.
Before you jump into it, though, you need to be aware of what the market looks like and what other SEO professionals are doing. Among the services that an SEO consultant normally does is web marketing, keyword strategy, web analytics, content strategy planning, and link building. You can start showing prospective clients what you can do by promoting your own website. With a creative digital marketing strategy, you should be able to get your business up and running.
15. Cyber Security Company

Ensuring cyber security is one of the biggest challenges to digital transformation. That’s demand for cyber security skills has been on the rise. The US cyber security market is predicted to earn close to $60 billion in 2022. Globally, the market is worth more than $150 billion and projected to grow a whopping 125% by 2026.
If you have white hat hacking skills, then starting a cyber security company might be the perfect career path for you. White hats, or ethical hackers, thwart cyber attacks in real time. Besides ethical hacking, it’s to your advantage to learn computer forensics skills and understand cloud security, blockchain security, internet of things security, and artificial intelligence. Having effective communication skills will also give you an edge.
Before you can launch your company, you’ll need to obtain the relevant certifications. You also need to make sure your business is legally compliant. With proper training and the latest tools to protect data and computer systems, you can easily become successful in this field.
16. Drone Business

Drones are one of the world’s fastest-growing industries, so if you’re thinking of starting a drone business, you’ve chosen a great time. The market is expected to more than double to $40 billion by 2026, as drones come into wide use for recreation, deliveries, surveillance, agriculture and more. You could start your own business, work from home and make a good living while helping people enjoy their lives more and grow their own businesses through the use of this advanced technology.
The crucial first step will be researching your local and state laws and finding out exactly which types of drones can be used for which purposes. Next, you should decide on which segment of the market you’d like to focus, whether it’s for recreation, surveillance, or shooting videos. From there you should probably get a bit of training so you’re able to showcase the drones to potential customers. At this point, all you need to do is build a website and start marketing and, considering how fast the market is growing, you could soon have buyers busting down your door.
17. Podcast

The number of Americans who listen to podcasts is seen to increase by around 5 million each year through 2024. Most of the podcast listeners are millennials and their most preferred podcast providers are Apple iTunes and Spotify. Podcasts are digital audio files that are used mostly for entertainment. These can also be used for educational purposes as well as for branding and raising awareness of major issues.
Starting your own podcast can be daunting, but if you can get your podcast on iTunes or Spotify, you can immediately engage millions of people not only in the US but also worldwide. Podcasts on iTunes may be streamed or downloaded on Apple devices while those on Spotify are available on both Android and iOS, desktops, smartphones, smart TVs and even gaming consoles.
Submitting your podcasts for upload on iTunes or Spotify is easy, but the challenge is getting an audience to listen to you since you’ll be competing against popular podcasters with tens of thousands of loyal listeners.
18. Live Scan Fingerprinting

On TV police dramas, crooks still get fingerprinted in black ink. But in real life, the vast majority of fingerprinting done today is via digital scanning. As technology advances and security concerns increase, demand has grown sharply for more advanced identification techniques, which is why the live scan fingerprinting market is expecting to see explosive growth in the years ahead.
Now could be a great time to start your own scanning business, get in early and ride the wave to serious success. But there are a few hurdles to jump through. The first step to get certified in fingerprint rolling, which means you’ll have to study your state’s handbook, get yourself fingerprinted, and submit your application to the Department of Justice. Once that’s done, just register with your local police departments and you’ll be ready to start providing mobile fingerprint scanning services all over town.
19. Money Transfer Business

With increasing globalization, the remittance market has equally expanded, creating more opportunities for money transfer operators. If you’re looking to start a money transfer business, now is a good time to do so. The global remittance market bounced back and moved nearly $600 billion in 2021. The amount of cross-border transactions, including digital remittances, is expected to grow further as more economies come out of a pandemic-induced recession.
Before you start a money transfer business, you need to obtain the necessary licenses and permits, and study the market. Take note that digital or online remittances are fast replacing traditional transfers, which require both senders and recipients to visit a bank or money transfer agent. Digital remittances are done through websites or apps. These are faster and more convenient. If you’re thinking about going digital, it’s important to create a website or an app first. Most importantly, you will have to secure your system and assure customers of safe fund transfers. There will be many challenges, but there are still opportunities for you to make your mark in this industry.
20. EV Charging Stations

If you’re an entrepreneur with an eye on the future , you’re probably thinking about starting an electric vehicle (EV) charging station business. It’s a wise investment; the market for EV charging stations is expected to grow significantly in the next few years as more car manufacturers introduce their own electric vehicle models. California, where most of the over 110,000 charging stations are currently located, is projected to grow its EV fleet size to 4 million by 2030. There’s a market for EVs in other states as well.
Not sure where to start? You can start small by installing one or two charging outlets. You can gradually grow your business by increasing the number of outlets and stations. Having a network of charging stations across the US will make EVs practical. Before you open your charging station, make sure to comply with your state’s laws and regulations. You also need to study the market and see what other charging stations are offering. You can easily attract customers if you can offer faster charging times and more efficient batteries.

4 innovative business opportunities in education technology.

In this article we delve into four niches that are reshaping education and consider how new startup ... [+] founders can position themselves to enter the edtech market.
One industry that has been viewed as ripe for innovation and disruption for the past two decades is education. Yet, despite all of this expected potential, edtech has been evolving incrementally and adding on top of the standard learning and teaching practices rather than replacing them.
While this is very likely to remain true, AI combined with current well-validated digital educational technologies could provide a new opportunity for disruption.
With this in mind, let's delve into four avenues that are reshaping education and consider how new startup founders can position themselves to enter the edtech market.
1. Personalized Learning Platforms
In the bustling digital era, one-size-fits-all education no longer suffices. Just as Google and Facebook revolutionized digital advertising by automatically serving personalized ads, a personalized AI-powered educational feed could be a big opportunity for change.
Artificial intelligence-powered personalized platforms could theoretically assess individual learning styles, preferences, and progress to deliver a curriculum that caters to the unique needs, interests, and capabilities of each learner.
One example in this domain is Duolingo. This language-learning app employs AI algorithms to personalize lessons for users, adapting the difficulty level and content based on their performance. The app's gamified approach aims to keep its users more engaged and motivated, resulting in more effective language acquisition.
Best Travel Insurance Companies
Best covid-19 travel insurance plans.
Example business idea: A language pronunciation coach. An app that uses AI to analyze users' speech patterns and provide personalized feedback to improve their pronunciation in foreign languages.
2. AI-Powered Tutoring Platforms
One great entry point for brand-new edtech startups could be to utilize the API of large language models like Chat GPT. A capable chatbot could serve as a private tutor, providing individual feedback and support, and adapting to the pace and learning style of the student.
Combining the chatbot with standard digital educational content from professionals could be a very potent combination of learning materials and cheap, accessible personalized feedback.
Two illustrative examples are ScribeSense and Grammarly - AI-driven platforms that offer real-time writing feedback. These platforms not only correct grammatical errors but also provide suggestions for improvement, mimicking the role of a human tutor.
Example business idea: AI math tutor for kids. A friendly AI chatbot that assists children in solving math problems, providing step-by-step explanations, and adapting its teaching approach based on the child's understanding.
3. Skill-Based Learning Apps
The rapidly evolving job landscape demands continuous skill development. This has paved the way for skill-based learning apps that offer focused courses to help individuals acquire niche skills. Startups like Udacity have embraced this trend by providing nanodegree programs in fields like data science, artificial intelligence, and digital marketing. These programs offer hands-on projects and mentorship, ensuring learners acquire real-world skills that are in high demand.
The best part about skill-based learning is that it has thousands of potential niches. If you are an expert in any field that doesn’t have a lot of online competition for educational content, you could easily start a micro-business (most likely to sell digital educational content) and possibly develop it into a high-growth startup thanks to the scalability of digital technology if you manage to transform your micro-business into a niche-focused platform.
Of course, if you would manage to grow your online content business into a real startup depends on how innovative you can be .
Example business idea: Virtual reality welding simulator. Build a VR simulation tool that teaches welding skills in a safe and controlled virtual environment, allowing users to practice and refine their techniques.
4. Collaborative Learning Platforms
While collaborative work is industry-standard all over the world thanks to cloud-based solutions like Google Docs, Notion, and many others, collaborative learning hasn’t caught up with that trend yet.
In theory, however, the concept of a digital classroom could provide value for learners.
A collaborative learning platform would enable students from diverse backgrounds and geographies to come together virtually, fostering a global community of learners. Startups like Coursera exemplify this trend. Partnering with universities worldwide, Coursera offers courses on a wide range of subjects, allowing learners to interact with peers from different cultures and access high-quality education without geographical constraints.
That said, collaborative learning has a long way to go, and an innovative platform that integrates the capabilities and learnings of industry-leading collaborative working apps could create a lot of value and reap success in the edtech industry.
Example business idea: Global niche book club platform. An online platform that connects readers from different parts of the world who are interested in the same niche of books and discuss books together, possibly producing joint book reviews.

Sellers Are Overwhelmed by New Technology

According to research, salespeople who feel overwhelmed by technology are 43% less likely to meet quota.
Technology has long been used to boost seller productivity, but sales leaders are telling us that efficiency gains have become slower and more expensive. This is because technology intended to help sell frequently makes the salesperson’s job more cumbersome. Sales organizations’ tendency to run most tasks through the sales rep requires an increasing number of complex systems to support.
In an effort to help salespeople meet ever-changing customer needs, sales leaders have spent years driving a “just one more” strategy — asking sellers to learn one more skill, master one more technology, or adopt one more tool in the hopes of closing just one more deal.
In the process, well-intentioned sales leaders designed a role that is simply too complex for most salespeople. In a recent Gartner survey of 501 B2B sellers, only 25% strongly agree they complete all tasks assigned to them while also meeting company standards of high quality.
Sales leaders’ solution? Technology. And yet, almost half of sellers feel overwhelmed by the number of technologies needed to do their work. This isn’t a mere annoyance — it’s the difference between hitting revenue targets and not. According to our research, sellers who feel overwhelmed by technology are 43% less likely to meet quota than non-overwhelmed sellers.
Get More From Sellers By Asking For Less
Sales leaders must rebuild the seller role around what core performers can actually manage. The seller role of the future is about asking salespeople for less — fewer skills, responsibilities, and tasks — and getting more .
To do this, sales leaders need their technology strategies to work for sellers. Successful sales teams will reinvent the seller role by treating technology as a teammate rather than merely a tool. This will empower salespeople to focus on a narrow set of uniquely human abilities: disentangling psychological and emotional aspects of buyer decision making via two concepts called mentalizing and value affirmation.
Treat Tech as a Teammate
Technology has long been used to boost seller productivity, but sales leaders are telling us that efficiency gains have become slower and more expensive. This is because technology intended to help sell frequently makes the salesperson’s job more cumbersome. Sales organizations’ tendency to run most tasks through the sales rep requires an increasing number of complex systems to support.
From the salesperson’s point of view, more technology hasn’t made their job easier or less expansive — it’s just been yet another thing to learn.
Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) make a new approach possible, but only if sales leaders think differently about tech deployment. In the future, progressive sales organizations will adopt technology as a full-fledged member of the sales team, freeing up salespeople from some of their tasks. Rather than giving salespeople more tech, the tech itself will take on more responsibility to navigate the buying environment independently.
Therein lies the revenue technology revolution. Gartner has identified four stages of sales technology maturity, as illustrated in the figure below.
Stages of Sales Tech Maturity
Source: Gartner (2023)
In Stages 1 and 2, humans make decisions and execute tasks with machine support — salespeople remain at the center of a complex web of technology and tools. In Stages 3 and 4, machines make decisions and execute tasks with human guidance, sharing responsibility with salespeople in a way that reduces seller burden.
While it’s hard to imagine that fully autonomous selling (Stage 4) will become the norm for complex B2B sales, many organizations are currently stuck at assisted selling (Stage 2). Sales organizations that embrace tech as a teammate to reach automated selling (Stage 3) will achieve a comparative advantage and see a measurable step change in sales productivity.
Free Your Sellers by Focusing on High-Value Use Cases
The opportunities to leverage tech as a teammate are vast, so where should sales leaders start?
Successful organizations ruthlessly prioritize use cases that will show immediate impact and that salespeople will welcome. Gartner research found these core use cases fit the bill:
- Seller Role Simplification: Automating activities that are essential to the function but that salespeople see as “administrative” (e.g., updating CRM) or “low-value” (e.g., data capture) will build seller trust in technology.
- Generative Value Messaging: Effective salespeople craft a value narrative that’s unique to each deal in their pipeline, and deliver that narrative both verbally and in writing. Naturally, that takes time, and differences in seller ability mean that message quality varies significantly. Salespeople can harness generative AI, like ChatGPT, to create better customer-facing messages faster by turning customer data into customized value messaging.
- Prospecting: Salespeople often deprioritize prospecting, much to the chagrin of sales leaders, many of whom see improving demand generation and driving pipeline development as critical priorities. Treating tech as a teammate will reduce burden by deploying autonomous sales development reps (SDRs), which can scrape data from social media platforms, external company databases, SEC filings, and other sources then match contact data with internal CRM systems. They could qualify prospects and automatically generate outreach, allowing sellers to only focus on reviewing and approving said outreach.
- Solution Design and Deal Closing: AI will use real-time inventory information, product specifications, and customer requests for proposals to auto-generate solutions and quotes for seller review. Instead of salespeople going back and forth with the deal desk for approval on price, AI systems can provide real-time, data-backed pricing justifications and offer value-based reasoning to help salespeople confidently persuade customers and close deals more effectively.
By focusing on these use cases, we estimate that sales leaders may be able to free up to a quarter of salespeoples’ time.
For technology to be a true teammate, salespeople must trust it enough to share ownership or — in some cases — cede control of the sales process.
This disposition, called “tech receptivity,” depends on seller trust in technology, confidence in their ability to use it well, and openness to modifying their sales approach—all factors that can be influenced by business leaders.
In addition, salespeople will need to develop skills in prompt engineering , hallucination spotting, and creativity, among others, to engage effectively with their new tech teammates. Leaders can champion the development of these skills by enabling their people to to experiment with the capabilities and limitations of their tech partners in a productive and low-risk way.
M entalizing: The Seller of the Future’s Superpower
Treating technology as a teammate reduces role complexity and frees up bandwidth for salespeople to bring unique value to buyer interactions.
Recently we’ve observed a powerful phenomenon in our B2B buyer data that increases the likelihood of a high quality deal. We call it value affirmation — when interactions with a supplier clarify the value of a solution by helping validate a buyer’s decision and boost their confidence, buyers are 30% more likely to purchase a high quality deal. Buyers are more than twice as likely to report value affirmation when they work with a salesperson.
Salespeople are uniquely qualified to support value affirmation because of a skill psychologists call “mentalizing.” Mentalizing is the ability to infer unspoken beliefs, feelings, and intentions to predict and influence buyer behavior.
Picture the buyer’s mind as an iceberg — the visible tip is what they reveal out loud. The untapped potential lies beneath, accessible only through mentalizing.
Sellers are out of sync with buyers, and mentalizing can help get them back on the same page. In a recent Gartner survey of over 200 sales leaders, 83% agree that their salespeople struggle to adapt to changing customer needs and expectations. When organizations successfully leverage technology as a teammate, salespeople have room to mentalize.
Elite salespeople often possess a natural talent for mentalizing, but it’s also a skill that can be honed through practice and prompting. There are four levels of mentalizing which build on one another and can be done before, during, and after buyer interactions:
- Active Listening — What Buyers Say: Salespeople have a tendency to focus on what they plan to say next. Instead, they must be fully present in the moment as the buyer speaks. This enables salespeople to probe for missing information and ask pointed follow-up questions.
- Perspective Taking — What Buyers Think: Salespeople must be adept at imagining the buyer’s point of view, assessing what information buyers have already consumed, and supplementing that information with additional insight that affirms the value of a solution.
- Empathizing — How Buyers Feel: Salespeople must exhibit emotional intelligence to anticipate how the buying journey might make buyers feel and adjust accordingly, particularly when it comes to bolstering confidence or alleviating the fear of failure.
- Cognitive Decoding — How Buyers Will Act: This most sophisticated form of mentalizing requires salespeople to synthesize all the information at hand, predict how buyers will behave, and adapt strategy to maximize the chances of a high-quality deal.
Sales leaders can train all four levels of mentalizing in activities like “role-reversals.” Many organizations already do role-playing exercises where salespeople practice their own lines while someone else (incidentally) plays the part of the buyer. But these can be opportunities to challenge salespeople to take turns inhabiting the minds of the customers they’re role-playing. Salespeople might even consider using generative AI as a partner to practice basic role-playing by prompting the language model to take on the perspective of either a seller or a particular buyer persona.
Augment Seller Mentalizing with Technology by Their Side
In the near future, it will be common for leaders to enhance seller mentalizing skills by leveraging breakthroughs in natural language processing and emotion AI. These tools offer clues about buyers’ emotional states and engagement levels as inferred through word choice, vocal tone, body language, and facial expressions.
Consider a virtual conversation with a large buying group. The salesperson is focused on quite a few things simultaneously: making their key points, determining how their message is landing, and answering questions. To do this, they’re using their mentalizing skills — looking at facial expressions, parsing the tone when stakeholders are speaking, and assessing whether questions indicate a sufficient level of understanding. While the best salespeople can glean a lot of insight from all of this information, there’s also a lot they will miss. And that is where an AI “partner” can help.
The idea that salespeople might be able to adapt in the moment based on real-time engagement insights is alluring. But salespeople can only process so much information at once, and colorful real-time sentiment dashboards risk being distracting or demoralizing. The most promising functionality may be after-call reports where salespeople can see which moments triggered strong reactions and adjust their approach for next time.
The Seller of the Future
In the future, the role of the salesperson will be about doing fewer things, but doing them better. Sales leaders must combine the transformative power of AI with the uniquely human capabilities of their salespeople to drive high-margin deals.
While this future might seem like science fiction, competitors — and likely your own salespeople — are already experimenting with new technology. By treating tech as a teammate and re-focusing salespeople where they can add unique value, you stand to unlock a step change in seller productivity and achieve significant revenue growth.

8. Setup computers – Technology Related Business Ideas
Another of my tech start up business ideas is setting up computers for people when they have bought them.
Sometimes people know how but do not want the hassle, and sometimes people do not know how to get it from its packaging to its useable state.

17. Remote consultant in IT
Should it be a problem to go visit people in their homes or place of work to help with IT issues or answer questions, you could do it remotely.

Podcasting is growing in popularity as a means for people to connect with others, sharing information, ideas and knowledge with their listeners. Start a platform for them where they can easily upload their podcasts.

Think of platforms like Facebook live, Twitch and Periscope. Big companies that have had success with it include Nestle, Nissan and NBC.
22. Video channel on tech
Instead of creating a place where videos can be uploaded or streamed you could create your own channel on all things tech and earn an income from doing it.

If you are able to create something personable as well as informative you can reach a very large audience.

Since a lot of those people also love to shop how about creating some kind of mobile shopping app.
26. Platform for ecommerce
There are so many people making an income from selling online. There are a number of popular platforms people use to create shop fronts. Sometimes people do not have the money to create a physical storefront, and with the internet they do not have to anymore.
But if you get it right perhaps you could create your own platform for ecommerce that people pay to use that is even better.
27. Selling digital products
Digital products means things you access or download online, rather than an actual physical item. So you could sell prints, online memberships, digital gift cards, online videos and so on.
28. Writing eBooks – Technology Related Business Ideas
Number 28 of my tech start up business ideas is to become an ebook author. Where once books were written, then printed and sold by large publishers the advance in tech and the online world now means people can write ebooks and then sell them online on platforms like Amazon. You could write on a huge range of topics such as;
- How to books
- Installation books
- Step by step guides
- Focus on specific tech area like drones
- Focus on specific tech giants
- Top gadgets or best of books
29. Start a book store online
For those who love books you could also start an online book store. You could sell your own books as well as selling others, or just sell other authors.
You will of course have to get a license to sell another people’s work. Larger places like Amazon are making a lot of money from people deciding to sell their work online when the publishing route has not worked, or just instead of it.
You can sell just tech themed books or other topics too. You can start out with just ebooks and then branch into audio and even maybe one day offer hard copies too.
30. Start an e-library – Technology Related Business Ideas
If not a book store site you could set up an online library! People could come to your site to rent different materials from ebooks to PDFs, audios, videos and such.

31. Schooling online
If you are a teacher or tutor, or just have a good amount of knowledge in the tech sector and a good way with others, perhaps you could start a school online!
You would need to decide what topics would be on the curriculum and you would also need to come up with course material and lesson plans.

Rather than tutoring or teaching online, you could start an actual school so you can get paid by a number of students learning from you.
32. Run an internet cafe
Internet cafes are extremely popular today. In fact more than just a place for free wifi and a coffee some people, freelancers and such, actually use them as their places of work and where they have meetings.
You could start your own place, starting small and then making something bigger when you have more success.
You just need to be very careful and sure about where you place it to get the best number of customers.
33. Servicing IT equipment
With the increase in IT equipment businesses are using there is now also an increase in demand for people who can service that equipment and perform repairs.
This could make you a very decent income but it helps to have the right experience and credentials if you want to be hired by larger businesses. You could fix things like;
- ATM machines
- Card readers
It would be a surprise to find a place of business that does not have some kind of technology that will need maintenance and repairs along the way.
Sometimes it may be small issues, sometimes it might be software related and sometimes it might be hardware.
34. Selling IT equipment
There is always room for another IT sales person, if you are good at selling things, this could be a way to earn a profit from tech.
You can choose whatever area you want to invest in, but one good one would be internet devices such as modems or reutters or Mi-Fi are especially in demand in North America and plenty of the rest of the world.
35. Offer services in Cloud Computing
Cloud computing is a very popular area of tech and is information storage on the web. It is certainly a tech start up business idea worth thinking about.

The advantages of such are becoming more obvious and so more are wanting to use it. There is profit to be made from offering businesses and site owners cloud computing services.
36. Start a shop for all tech
If you are a dabbler, you have some knowledge and interest in a whole range of tech, you might want to set up a retail business for all things tech.

37. Selling and developing mobile apps
Mobile apps are in high demand as more and more people become owners of phones that use a wide range of apps.
You could develop the apps and sell them yourself. You need to come up with unique ideas, think of what people need or what makes life easier for them.
38. Software developer – Technology Related Business Ideas
In this modern technological world software developers are in high demand. They create programs for computers or devices and can make a very good income.

For people who have design talent and experience and education in web design you could easily set up your own business offering your service.
With more and more businesses realizing the importance of having an online presence the demand for web designing is very high. Businesses will pay good money to have a website that is user friendly and attracts customers.
40. Create a site for online dating
Online is not just a place people buy or advertise, it is also a place where people meet and fall in love.
There are a lot of online dating platforms, apps and sites but the right site could bring in a lot of clients whether they are wanting their soul mate or just people to connect with.
41. Blog Consultant – Technology Related Business Ideas
With blogging being such a big business today there is opportunity there to earn money from being a blog consultant.
Some people blog just to connect with others as hare ideas, but some also make money from it. In those cases bloggers will want to have the best blogs possible to get the most readers possible.
A blog consultant is paid to look at blogs and tell people how to make improvements and what can be done to improve their revenue from them.
42. Start an Info Tech Radio or TV show
I covered the ideas for sharing your information via online methods, but let’s not forget the other modern means for communication, TV and Radio.
You could start a show on one of them that offers tech advice, reviews and support. There are a few others out there, but perhaps there is something you think should be covered that is not being covered.
Or perhaps you have an idea for a theme that is different from the others. You can get listeners and viewers which would mean then you could get sponsorships and ad revenue.
43. SEO consultant – Technology Related Business Ideas
The SEO is essential to publishers and businesses online. It SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Basically there are ways to make sure your site, or page or post is the one that comes up in the first page of an internet search.
For example if you have a site with articles and sales on smartphones, you want your page to come up when people use a search engine like Google to look up something like What is the best Smartphone.
This is not something that everyone is an expert in so often they will hire an SEO consultant or specialist to optimize their pages for them.
44. Social media consultant
Other consulting area include the various types of social media there are. Businesses are realizing these networks are an opportunity to be taken advantage of but are always sure how to do it.
A social media consultant would have expertise on helping them use different platforms, creating content and developing strategies. Typical platforms include;
45. Create a new social networking site
There are some huge names in the world of social networking but they were not always so big and successful. Most start out small and then grow from there.

Making computer parts is an area some people can step into but is a tech start up business idea that requires some training. It might be computer parts or it might be parts of their accessories like bouse parts, speaker parts and so on.
47. Selling refurbished phones
With most people having a mobile phone today there is a huge market for refurbished phones. You could get used phones and refurbish them and sell them.
Not everyone can pay top price for the latest smartphone or blackberry. Offering refurbished phones at a lower price means people can still get a phone it just might not be brand new!
48. Making smartphone accessories
Smartphones offer a large number of options when it comes to starting your own tech business. One of those is making one or more of the accessories that are used with them. Things like charging cords, cases, speakers, lenses, earphones and so on.
49. Repairing smartphones
Or you could start a business offering repairs for smartphones if you have the necessary knowledge and skills. It is a fact that phones can sometimes take a bit of a beating, screens crack and so on.
People would much rather pay your more affordable prices than have to take it into a shop or even worse have to buy a replacement.
50. Car tracker repairs and installations
My last offering for tech start up business ideas is to get into installing and repairing car trackers.
Cars having a tracking system is growing, and somebody needs to be paid for repairing them and installing them! Fleet operators especially use them to track and manage all their vehicles.
Wrapping Up
For those with tech knowledge, skills and training there are plenty of opportunities for starting up your own business.
Whether you prefer to work online, repair things, make things, sell things or talk about them, I have found something here for everyone.
The world is advancing and people worry about the loss of jobs it is causing. While in some cases that may be the case, it also creates opportunities for skilled tech loving people.

Google unveils enterprise AI tools, new AI chip
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Google unveiled a swath of fresh artificial-intelligence technology and partnerships on Tuesday that were geared toward bringing more of the growing technology to large businesses.
The batch of announcements from its Google Next conference in San Francisco included new customers for its cloud software such as General Motors (GM.N) and Estee Lauder Companies (EL.N) .
The Alphabet (GOOGL.O) subsidiary made public a new version of its custom-built AI chips, unveiled an enterprise-scale tool to watermark and identify images generated with AI - plus tools for security and its office suite.
The flurry of announcements is part of Google's recent effort to showcase its AI plans, after Microsoft (MSFT.O) caught the company off guard with an ambitious AI strategy it has been rolling out since last year.
But its big business customers need to be deliberate and move at a different pace, Google Cloud chief Thomas Kurian said in an interview with Reuters.
"We've generally told enterprise customers, 'Go slowly and methodically because it's important that you treat this as a strategic software development,'" he said. "There's been this sort of FOMO of, 'I need to be in generative AI for generative AI's sake.'"
FOMO refers to fear of missing out, a common refrain in AI in recent months.

To bolster Google's enterprise cloud service it added 20 AI models to its collection, bringing the total to 100. The AI infrastructure includes deals to bring Google Cloud customers access to Meta Platforms' (META.O) AI model LLaMa 2, and to the startup Anthropic's Claude 2.
Google announced new versions of its own foundation AI infrastructure that improve performance and add features. The new version of its text model called PaLM, for example, increased the amount of text users can input to make it easier to process longer documents such as legal briefs and books.
Google discussed a tool that adds the capability to watermark AI-generated images. Called SynthID, the technology alters a digital image file in a way invisible to human eyes. It is designed to remain intact after an image is altered or tampered with.
Google also rolled out AI updates to its suite of office software and security tools. The company unveiled an AI-powered tool that can port databases from Oracle (ORCL.N) to an open-source version, a notoriously difficult task.
CUSTOM AI CHIPS
Ahead of the announcement of its full-fledged fifth-generation tensor processing unit (TPU), Google has opened access to a version that is optimized for genAI and large language models.
The new chip, called TPU v5e, is designed to train large models but also efficiently serve content from those models. It is not as powerful as the as yet unlaunched flagship fifth AI generation chip.
Google has stitched together the TPU v5e chips into batches of 256 that it describes as a "supercomputer." Cloud customers can connect several pods together in order to tackle more complex computing problems.

The A.I. Revolution Is Coming. But Not as Fast as Some People Think.
From steam power to the internet, there has always been a lag between technology invention and adoption across industries and the economy.

Steve Lohr covers technology and the economy.
Lori Beer, the global chief information officer of JPMorgan Chase, talks about the latest artificial intelligence with the enthusiasm of a convert. She refers to A.I. chatbots like ChatGPT, with its ability to produce everything from poetry to computer programs, as “transformative” and a “paradigm shift.”
But it’s not coming soon to the nation’s largest bank. JPMorgan has blocked access to ChatGPT from its computers and told its 300,000 workers not to put any bank information into the chatbot or other generative A.I. tools.
For now, Ms. Beer said, there are too many risks of leaking confidential data, questions about how the data is used and about the accuracy of the A.I.-generated answers. The bank has created a walled-off, private network to allow a few hundred data scientists and engineers to experiment with the technology. They are exploring uses like automating and improving tech support and software development.
Across corporate America, the perspective is much the same. Generative A.I. , the software engine behind ChatGPT, is seen as an exciting new wave of technology. But companies in every industry are mainly trying out the technology and thinking through the economics. Widespread use of it at many companies could be years away.
Generative A.I., according to forecasts , could sharply boost productivity and add trillions of dollars to the global economy. Yet the lesson of history, from steam power to the internet, is that there is a lengthy lag between the arrival of major new technology and its broad adoption — which is what transforms industries and helps fuel the economy.
Take the internet. In the 1990s, there were confident predictions that the internet and the web would disrupt the retailing, advertising and media industries. Those predictions proved to be true, but that was more than a decade later, well after the dot-com bubble had burst.
Over that time, the technology improved and costs dropped, so bottlenecks fell away. Broadband internet connections eventually became commonplace. Easy-to-use payment systems were developed. Audio and video streaming technology became far better.
Fueling the development were a flood of money and a surge of entrepreneurial trial and error.
“We’re going to see a similar gold rush this time,” said Vijay Sankaran, chief technology officer of Johnson Controls , a large supplier of building equipment, software and services. “We’ll see a lot of learning.”
The investment frenzy is well underway. In the first half of 2023, funding for generative A.I. start-ups reached $15.3 billion, nearly three times the total for all of last year, according to PitchBook, which tracks start-up investments.
Corporate technology managers are sampling generative A.I. software from a host of suppliers and watching to see how the industry shakes out.
In November, when ChatGPT was made available to the public, it was a “Netscape moment” for generative A.I., said Rob Thomas, IBM’s chief commercial officer, referring to Netscape’s introduction of the browser in 1994. “That brought the internet alive,” Mr. Thomas said. But it was just a beginning, opening a door to new business opportunities that took years to exploit.
In a recent report , the McKinsey Global Institute, the research arm of the consulting firm, included a timeline for the widespread adoption of generative A.I. applications. It assumed steady improvement in currently known technology, but not future breakthroughs. Its forecast for mainstream adoption was neither short nor precise, a range of eight to 27 years.
The broad range is explained by plugging in different assumptions about economic cycles, government regulation, corporate cultures and management decisions.
“We’re not modeling the laws of physics here; we’re modeling economics and societies, and people and companies,” said Michael Chui, a partner at the McKinsey Global Institute. “What happens is largely the result of human choices.”
Technology diffuses across the economy through people, who bring their skills to new industries. A few months ago, Davis Liang left an A.I. group at Meta to join Abridge , a health care start-up that records and summarizes patient visits for physicians. Its generative A.I. software can save doctors from hours of typing up patient notes and billing reports.
Mr. Liang, a 29-year-old computer scientist, has been an author on scientific papers and helped build so-called large language models that animate generative A.I.
His skills are in demand these days. Mr. Liang declined to say, but people with his experience and background at generative A.I. start-ups are typically paid a base salary of more than $200,000, and stock grants can potentially take the total compensation far higher.
The main appeal of Abridge, Mr. Liang said, was applying the “superpowerful tool” of A.I. in health care and “improving the working lives of physicians.” He was recruited by Zachary Lipton, a former research scientist in Amazon’s A.I. group, who is an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University. Mr. Lipton joined Abridge early this year as chief scientific officer.
“We’re not working on ads or something like that,” Mr. Lipton said. “There is a level of fulfillment when you’re getting thank-you letters from physicians every day.”
Significant new technologies are flywheels for follow-on innovation, spawning start-ups that build applications to make the underlying technology useful and accessible. In its early years, the personal computer was seen as a hobbyist’s plaything. But the creation of the spreadsheet program — the “killer app” of its day — made the PC an essential tool in business.
Sarah Nagy led a data science team at Citadel, a giant investment firm, in 2020 when she first tinkered with GPT-3. It was more than two years before OpenAI released ChatGPT. But the power of the fundamental technology was apparent in 2020.
Ms. Nagy was particularly impressed by the software’s ability to generate computer code from text commands. That, she figured, could help democratize data analysis inside companies, making it broadly accessible to businesspeople instead of an elite group.
In 2021, Ms. Nagy founded Seek AI to pursue that goal. The New York start-up now has about two dozen customers in the technology, retail and finance industries, mostly working on pilot projects.
Using Seek AI’s software, a retail manager, for example, could type in questions about product sales, ad campaigns and online versus in-store performance to guide marketing strategy and spending. The software then transforms the words into a computer-coded query, searches the company’s storehouse of data, and returns answers in text or retrieves the relevant data.
Businesspeople, Ms. Nagy said, can get answers almost instantly or within a day instead of a couple of weeks, if they have to make a request for something that requires the attention of a member of a data science team.
“At the end of the day, we’re trying to reduce the time it takes to get an answer or useful data,” Ms. Nagy said.
Saving time and streamlining work inside companies are the prime early targets for generative A.I. in most businesses. New products and services will come later.
This year, JPMorgan trademarked IndexGPT as a possible name for a generative A.I.-driven investment advisory product.
“That’s something we will look at and continue to assess over time,” said Ms. Beer, the bank’s tech leader. “But it’s not close to launching yet.”

The new spreadsheet openai introduces chatgpt enterprise for businesses, unlimited gpt-4, encryption, 32k context, and more. will it become an essential tool.
Benj Edwards - Aug 28, 2023 8:27 pm UTC

On Monday, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Enterprise, an AI assistant aimed at businesses that offers unlimited access to GPT-4 at faster speeds. It also includes extended context windows for processing longer texts, encryption, enterprise-grade security and privacy, and group account management features.
Further Reading
Building on the success of ChatGPT , which launched just nine months ago, the enterprise version of the popular chatbot seeks to ease minds and broaden capabilities.
Among its perks: a 32,000 token context window, which means it can process more text (or hold longer conversations) at once. Tokens are fragments of a word, and 32,000 tokens are roughly equivalent to about 24,000 words. Currently, ChatGPT with GPT-4 maxes out at 8,000 tokens for ChatGPT Plus users. Also, no more usage limits: Enterprise customers will have access to unlimited GPT-4 queries at a faster speed.
Since all of ChatGPT's data processing takes place in the cloud (on OpenAI's servers), ChatGPT Enterprise is also designed to meet the high-security needs of business customers with features such as data encryption "at rest" (using AES 256 —as stored on OpenAI's servers) and "in transit" (using TLS 1.2+ , which covers user input and output through the Internet, sometimes used as part of HTTPS). Also, OpenAI says that customer prompts and company data are not used for training OpenAI models. In the free and Plus versions of ChatGPT, OpenAI uses that data for training unless conversation history is turned off.
In a potential win for corporate security aficionados, ChatGPT Enterprise has been certified SOC 2 ( System and Organization Controls 2 ) compliant, which is a framework set by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) for auditing a company's controls for managing customer data to ensure they meet security, availability, processing integrity, and privacy standards.
The service also includes a new admin console that allows for bulk member management, domain verification, and single sign-on (SSO) and provides "usage insights" for large-scale deployment—checking off plenty of corporate IT jargon boxes.
ChatGPT is already being used in over 80 percent of Fortune 500 companies, says OpenAI, based on an analysis of registered email address domains. The firm lists early adopters like Block, Canva, Carlyle, The Estée Lauder Companies, PwC, and Zapier as having already used ChatGPT Enterprise to "craft clearer communications, accelerate coding tasks, rapidly explore answers to complex business questions, assist with creative work."
OpenAI's promotional blog quotes Jorge Zuniga of software-as-a-service platform Asana as saying, "ChatGPT Enterprise has cut down research time by an average of an hour per day, increasing productivity for people on our team. It’s been a powerful tool that has accelerated testing hypotheses and improving our internal systems."
All of which raises the question: Just how useful is ChatGPT for businesses? That will likely depend on the application. Will AI assistants like ChatGPT become the new word processor or spreadsheet—a fundamental software tool that will become essential and eventually taken for granted as a business necessity? Andrej Karpathy, an OpenAI employee and influential AI scientist , is angling in that direction. On the social media network X, Karpathy, posted , "Imo the productivity amplification here is so large that organizations should be thinking about it as a basic work tool, like a new kind of spreadsheets++, given out eagerly and by default."
On the other hand, large language models such as GPT-4 are known to confabulate (make things up or draw false conclusions) at unpredictable times, which makes their utility as a factual reference limited. Instead, the model's strengths seem to center around analysis, explanation, summary, and translation. Among corporate ChatGPT users, "bring your own facts" may likely be the rule of the day—as in, provide facts or data in context for GPT-4 to work with instead of relying on facts from the model itself.
Microsoft already offers similar enterprise chatbot features in Bing Chat Enterprise, which is based on GPT-4 and other technology licensed from OpenAI (Microsoft announced a large investment in OpenAI in January). Bing Chat Enterprise is included with the price of Microsoft 365 for Business Standard ($12.50 per user per month) and Premium Plans ($22 per user per month). In July, Microsoft also said that Bing Chat Enterprise would eventually be available standalone as a $5/month feature.
OpenAI has not yet publicly announced how much ChatGPT Enterprise will cost. When we asked, an OpenAI representative replied, "It will depend on each company’s use case. Those interested should reach out to OpenAI for more information."
