Obtaining Your RN Licensure Across States

Obtaining your RN licensure ahead of time in multiple states opens up many new opportunities for work and adventure. Waiting to get a license after you see a desirable location makes it likely the assignment will be gone. States with higher-paying assignments, like California and New York, can take more than a month to process an application. Please note that AHS does not reimburse expenses such as transcripts, CEUs, or associated license verifications. Accountable does not process licenses.

Compact License

  • Compact states are specific states that have joined together to legally permit their nurses to obtain a multi-state license called a compact license.
  • The Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) is an agreement between states allowing nurses to have one compact state nursing license so they can practice in other states that are part of the agreement.
  • Each compact state has passed legislation through their state government approving this agreement.
  • A compact license enables nurses to work in any other state that has adopted this measure using their multi-state license.
  • Nurses who want to work in states that are not part of the eNLC must apply for that state’s single license and also have a compact license from their home state.
  • Only nurses who declare a compact state as their primary state of residence may be eligible for a multistate license. The primary state of residency is generally determined by a government-issued ID showing an actual street address (current driver’s license) and in what state the nurse pays income taxes.

Non-Compact License

  • As a resident of a non-compact state, a nurse is not eligible for a compact license.
  • The nurse may apply for a license by endorsement in a compact state, and eligibility will be limited to a single-state license valid only in that state.
  • Residents of non-compact states can have as many single-state licenses as they wish.

Walk-Through States

  • A walk-through state allows a nurse to be issued a temporary state license within a day or two.
  • This temporary license is usually valid for 30 days up to 6 months.
  • The nurse can begin to practice nursing immediately in the state while waiting for a permanent license to be issued.
  • As of July 2022, the following states are considered walk-through states: AZ, IL, LA, MO, SC, and SD.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you have assignments.

We currently offer local and travel contracts nationwide, and we add new contracts and facilities daily. If we don’t have what you’re looking for at the time, continue to reach out or apply so that we can keep in contact as new things come in.

What are your hours?

Our hours are currently 8:30am-5pm. However, your recruiter should always be available, and we do offer an on-call service to all of our healthcare professionals. If you have issues or questions while on contract you can always call and someone will be able to assist you.

When I start an assignment, who is my employer?

You will be working with and reporting to the facility, but Accountable Healthcare Staffing is your employer.

How does your pay work?

Our pay week is Sunday through Saturday. All of our nurses get paid weekly by either direct deposit or wisely card. Whenever you first start on an assignment, you have the option to opt for DAILY PAY to assist with the expenses of traveling and hotel costs.

How much experience do I need?

One year of acute care experience and/or correctional experience within the last 3 years is required.

How much training do I receive?

That really depends on the facility, but generally they will give you 1-2 weeks of training before they expect you to be able to work without direction.

How far in advance should I apply for a travel position?

The best ‘rule of thumb” is to apply for a position about 4 weeks prior to when you’d like to start. Clearance at facilities can take anywhere from 1-4 weeks depending on the level of clearance they require.

How long are contracts?

All of our contracts are full-time, which lasts anywhere from 4-13 weeks.

Can I take time off?

YES! We do ask upon submission if there are dates you would like to have off requested on your contract. These are almost always approved by the facility prior to you starting your contract.

Can I take time off between assignments?

Generally yes, 1-2 weeks off can be approved. This is something your recruiter will discuss with you and with the site whenever time for your extension is getting close.

Do you offer benefits?

Yes, we offer benefits on all of our full-time contracts on day one (minimum of 30 hours per week, for at least 4 weeks). If you are PRN, you are still eligible for benefits but must work a minimum of 120 hours for 3 months consistently before you’re able to enroll, then at least 120 hours a month once enrolled to remain active.

I’m interested in a position, what’s next?

Once you find a location that you’re interested in, give our office a call, and you will be linked to a recruiter who can go over pay and contract details. Once you have completed your online application your recruiter will work closely with you to get you submitted to your assignment.

What is the interview process like?

The interview process is typically quick and done on the phone. This is the time for the Health Service Administrator or Director of Nursing to get to know you a little better and see if you would be a good fit to work at their facility. This is also a perfect time for you to ask any questions you may have about the facility prior to starting. Make sure you do some research on the facility that you’re going to so you have an idea of what questions to ask (if any).

I got offered a position, now what?

Reach out to your recruiter and let them know how your interview went. Your recruiter will ensure that everything was offered properly and discuss next steps. Once the offer details have been confirmed, we will send out your contract, and you will finish compliance, which is due 48 hours prior to your start date.

What is the compliance process like?

You will complete a new hire packet, Relias Testing, and send over your health documentation including your health statement, TB, flu vaccine, COVID vaccine, and all of your certifications. We will set up a background check and drug screen for you. You will also be required to do employment verification. Compliance only takes about one week, depending on how quickly you can send everything.

What do I do when my contract comes to an end?

Your recruiter will reach out to you 2-3 weeks prior to your end date to see if you are considering extending at your current facility. If you do wish to extend they will collect your time off from you to request to the site, confirm the extension length and RTO, and get your contract together. If you’d like to change things up and go to a different facility, your recruiter will send you updated openings to look over.

Do you offer bonuses?

Yes, we offer loyalty bonuses, completion bonuses, and referral bonuses! You can discuss these with your recruiter.

What’s the difference between a local and a travel contract?

To be considered travel and receive housing and meal stipends, your permanent tax address must be 50+ miles from the facility you wish to work at. Local contracts are less than 50 miles from the facility. However, our local contracts are still typically paid higher than what you would expect to make in a staff position.

What if I get on an assignment and decide it is not for me?

We do understand that sometimes you get to an assignment and realize that it is not a great fit for you. We do ask that you reach out to your recruiter immediately and discuss the issues that you are experiencing. You may be asked to stay at the facility until we can find a replacement for you. We will attempt to remedy the situation with the site and see if there is something we can do in the meantime. Please keep in mind that there may be an early cancellation fee and DNR if you cannot return to the site.

I’m going from a staff position to traveling, how will this affect my taxes?

We always advise speaking with a tax professional about how to file. You can always update your W-4 throughout your employment with us if a change is needed.
