Slugs for Nenshi, hugs for rivals at NDP leadership's Calgary debate

Alberta ndp's member base has shifted south. we'll soon learn if its priorities have shifted, too.

task projects edmonton

Social Sharing

When there are reports of physical contact among participants at a political debate, it's typically because something ugly has happened.

Unless, that is, it's an NDP leadership debate.

At the Alberta party's candidate forum on Saturday, rivals Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse and Gil McGowan weren't sure which one was supposed to speak first, nervously giggling about it. Once the confusion was resolved, they hugged, before profusely agreeing with each other about raising Alberta's minimum wage and the importance of unions.

These are, as Calahoo Stonehouse explained afterwards, all members of the same party, who broadly share the same progressive values.

They all oppose most of what the Danielle Smith-led UCP does, and after a successor to longtime NDP Leader Rachel Notley is chosen, they'll all remain prominent senior members of the same team — barring the sort of major party fracture that pundits often speculate about in the wake of a new leader's selection, but seldom materializes.

The niceties and touchy-touchy good vibes can go away when there's disagreement over who really belongs in the party or is well-suited to lead it. Take, for example, one testy exchange between former health minister Sarah Hoffman and Naheed Nenshi about the ex-mayor's past.

The battle of Midfield

Hoffman reached back more than six years to hit Nenshi over the closure of the city-owned Midfield Mobile Home Park last decade to make way for a larger residential community — a project still not completed.

"What I need to know from you Naheed: why you closed that park, why you evicted those folks," Hoffman said. She added that she'd spoken to some former residents, and they're still dealing with mortgages and one former mobile homeowner had to move in with his in-laws.

It was a departure from the question about expanding the party while remaining true to its values. Or was it?

Nenshi replied by calling them "so-called affordable homes," and said the residents were prioritized for Calgary Housing Company affordable rentals. He said Hoffman was "fear mongering."

"As the minister of health, Sarah, you should know that sometimes the easy answers are not the easy answers," he said.

a woman speaks into a microphone while others await their turn at a debate.

The sense Nenshi is the front-runner gets amplified when nobody is dredging up controversial decisions from Hoffman's past, or former justice minister Kathleen Ganley's, or McGowan's as a labour leader. (Calahoo Stonehouse is a first-term MLA.)

McGowan used one of his debate segments to bring up the 2019 letter Nenshi sent the UCP government about altering the city union's collective agreement, which several candidates used to attack the ex-mayor as anti-union earlier in the week . Nenshi bid to be more genial in this defence, saying that he was only bringing forth the position of what he called a "super-right-wing council" five years ago, and that he's a strong supporter of organized labour.

A question bubbling underneath this leadership race: how passionate about organized labour is the NDP base in 2024, newly enlarged by the race itself?

  • Analysis Nenshi's NDP leadership rivals say he's vague on policy, as front-runner tries to blend in with orange crowd

On Sunday, the party will reveal the number of members eligible to vote for leader, and sources have told CBC that it surpasses 85,000 — several times greater than what it was at the point Notley announced her resignation in January.

Insiders also say that the lion's share of members are Calgarians, the town of Nenshi and Ganley. That's a massively new orbit for the Alberta NDP, which had its core in Edmonton in the Notley years, and in the decades before it.

"You have two camps actively selling memberships in Calgary, and they are doing a very good job of that — and I think it means something phenomenal for our party," Ganley told reporters after the debate.

She tried to differentiate herself from her fellow Calgarian by saying the party needs a leader who does more than hurl insults at Smith's party. (Nenshi drew UCP ire Saturday for calling them the "monkeys on the other side" during a discussion about question period in the legislature.)

A well-educated base

More than 1,000 people attended the debate at Stampede Park, and Nenshi consistently garnered the most applause.

McGowan, who's led the labour movement for more than two decades, said he's not sure the newly enlarged NDP membership will be as passionate about organized labour rights as it used to be.

In past Alberta NDP eras, the slightest whiff of union-busting posturing would be fatal to the party's card-holders, especially for a leadership hopeful.

McGowan also wonders, he said, how well this party will do with the province's blue-collar and non-university-educated voters, a group that the UCP has won over.

A bearded man points while talking.

At the outset of the forum, he asked attendees to stand if they had university degrees. The vast majority did — leading him to stress the uphill battle the NDP has with people who aren't like that crowd.

In the last election, 44 per cent of voters gave the New Democrats a proverbial hug — an increase in the popular vote for the party above their 2015 victory . But they fell 8.5 percentage points and 11 seats behind Smith's UCP.

It's undeniable that the next NDP leader's key task will be to make up that gap in the 2027 election. It's not clear at this point how easily the contest's victor will become part of the party's hugging brigade, but that may depend on which priorities this party's membership is keen to wrap their arms around.

6 Easy Arduino Projects For Beginner Coders

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

If you have an interest in electronics and have been hanging around DIY tech forums for a while now, chances are you already know what an Arduino is . This microcontroller is at the heart of countless impressive projects like RFID door locks, automated plant watering systems, and even robot cars.

Compared to single-board computers like Raspberry Pis and ODROIDs, which might be too overwhelming and complex for beginners, Arduinos are relatively easier to understand. You simply connect your components to the board, use a software called Arduino IDE to create your code, upload the code, and you're essentially done. No need for complicated OS installations and setups.

That makes Arduinos the perfect tool for practicing your programming skills. With the thousands of Arduino projects you can find online, which ones are the ideal starting point for beginners? We've compiled six of the best projects you can take on as a beginner coder.

Read more: Major Motherboard Brands Ranked Worst To Best

Lie Detector

While lie detectors aren't as useful in real-life crime scenes as they are in movies and TV shows, they're pretty fun to have for less serious reasons. However, if you're mainly using it for kicks and giggles, you probably don't want to spend as much as $100 for commercial models, especially when you can just build one yourself.

This DIY lie detector project  costs you only around $20 to make. Save for the Arduino Nano , it requires pretty basic electronic components you might already have on hand, including three different colored LEDs (green, orange, and red), a 10k-ohm resistor, and a few cables.

The principle behind the project is the fact that the skin reacts to our emotions. Changes in what you're currently feeling can also mean changes in the skin's conductivity, which is then measured and analyzed by the Arduino Nano. These fluctuations in skin conductivity are displayed on the Arduino IDE's Serial Plotter, and indicated by the three LEDs. The green lights up when the conductivity is in the person's normal range, orange when it's starting to spike up, and red when it hits a level that can suggest the person's nervousness.

On the software end, the Arduino code is pretty simple, with only less than 50 lines and basic functions used. Beginners can readily understand and tweak the code to more accurately set the different conductivity ranges.

Laser Tripwire Alarm

Aside from the dramatic car chases and fighting scenes, another cool thing about spy and action movies is the laser tripwire alarm. Sure, it might look like an overly complex system on screen, but there's actually a basic version you can easily build right at home, even without extensive coding experience.

Powered by an Arduino Uno, this laser tripwire alarm project works much like those in movies. There's a tripwire — made up of a laser directed at a light sensor — that's placed somewhere the intruder can easily trigger, such as a door or hallway. As soon as the light from the laser to the sensor is blocked, the sensor will detect a drop in light intensity and subsequently activate the buzzer. The alarm only stops when you press the push button connected to the Arduino.

For this setup, the program uses only 27 lines, and you'll mostly be dealing with "if" statements, perfect for when you're just starting out with Arduino programming. If, however, you find this too basic, there's a second version of the project with twice as many lines of code.

In this version, you'll be using a keypad instead of a simple push button to deactivate the alarm. After the buzzer goes off, you need to press the star (*) button on the keypad before inputting your four-digit code. As you type the passcode, the buzzer's tone switches to a continuous but still equally annoying sound. If you enter the right code, the alarm will deactivate. Otherwise, it will start blaring again.

Solar Tracker Sunflower

Sunflowers, particularly the younger ones, like following the sun as it crosses the sky. This DIY solar tracker project mimics this behavior using three simple main components: An Arduino UNO board, a servo motor (with a sunflower paper decoration attached), and two photoresistors facing the opposite direction.

Each of the photoresistors monitors the light inputs coming from the direction they're facing. Once one detects a spike in light intensity, it sends a signal to the microcontroller, which in turn triggers the servo motor to twist toward that light source. If the other photoresistor senses light coming from its respective direction, the board then adjusts the angle of the servo accordingly to point in that new direction. And that's pretty much all there is to it.

The code for the project is self-explanatory and easy for beginners to understand, too. You'll be working with analog readings from the input (photoresistor) and an Arduino library for the output (servo motor). The entire program is just 33 lines long, and you can opt to modify it to add more photoresistors to monitor for light sources from other directions.

Trash Bin Waste Level Detector

Making an Arduino-powered automatic trash bin that opens and closes the lid for you is a great way to get started with electronics and sensors. If you're looking to make your garbage can even smarter, you might want to take on this trash bin waste level detector as an easy weekend project.

What this project does is pretty straightforward. It continuously monitors the inside of the trash bin and tells you how full it already is by displaying the waste level (measured in centimeters) on the Arduino IDE's serial monitor. It also has a convenient feature that automatically opens the lid once it senses a presence within a 10-centimeter range (about four inches), and closes the lid after a brief interval of four seconds.

Hardware-wise, the garbage can is outfitted with a servo inside the bin for opening and closing the lid, an ultrasonic sensor in front of the bin for sensing approaching people, and another ultrasonic sensor on the inside of the lid for detecting the trash level.

On the software side, things are just as straightforward. The code includes two Arduino libraries: one for the servo and another for the ultrasonic sensors. The main code is a simple 14-line piece with a simple if-else statement you can readily modify. As an upgrade to the project, you can add an LCD monitor to the setup and change the code to display the waste level on the LCD instead of just the Arduino IDE's serial monitor.

Bluetooth-Controlled Car With LEDs

Probably one of the coolest Arduino projects out there is a remote-controlled car, but they're also one of the most daunting projects for beginners to undertake. However, you'll be glad to know that there are RC car versions that don't require being a coding expert.

This Bluetooth-controlled car may seem too ambitious for a beginner project at first glance, but it's actually an easy build. It's run by an Arduino UNO board, and includes several key components: four gear motors with wheels for moving the car, four LEDs for signaling the active status of each motor, a motor driver for operating all the motors, a Bluetooth module for remote control, and a battery for powering the car.

Upon powering up, the car automatically becomes visible to external Bluetooth devices like your phone. You can then connect it to your device using the project developer's Android app , and start controlling the car with the joystick. Press one direction, and the motors for that particular direction will be activated. The LEDs connected to those motors will also light up to show which ones are in action.

Unlike the other projects in this list, the code for this setup is a little over 100 lines, but it's an excellent introduction to working with custom functions that can be called within other functions, like the loop function. You generally wouldn't need to modify anything in the code, except perhaps to change the pin configuration of the motors if they happen to run opposite to your command.

Light-Dependent Bulb

Smart devices are everywhere these days, and when it comes to smart bulbs in particular, they're readily available off Amazon for as cheap as $8 . However, they might be a bit overkill if you're only after something like a bulb that automatically switches on and off depending on the ambient light at certain times of day. In that case, this Arduino-based smart light might be more your cup of tea.

The idea behind this project is to build a lightbulb controller using a light-dependent resistor (LDR). The LDR continuously monitors the intensity of light in the room. When it's dark like at night, or when the blackout curtains are drawn, it triggers the bulb to switch on. In contrast, when the room is well-lit, say during the day, the bulb is kept off.

Aside from the Arduino UNO microcontroller, LDR, and the bulb itself, the hardware for this setup is pretty minimal: a relay for the bulb, a resistor for the LDR, and some wires to connect everything together.

As for the code, it's really straightforward and easy to understand. You have less than 30 lines, with the main code sporting a simple "if-else" logic. You can readily use the project developer's code as is or change the pin configuration and the LDR's threshold to better suit your needs.

Honey, I Love You. Didn’t You See My Slack About It?

Some couples are using professional project-management software to maintain their relationships. Why does it bother other people?

Ben Lang using his laptop and his wife, Karen-Lynn, holding her phone, in their living room.

By Erin Griffith

Ben Lang didn’t expect to get so much hate just for being organized. For the past three years, he and his wife, Karen-Lynn Amouyal, have been using Notion, a popular software tool, to optimize their household and relationship. His version of the tool, commonly used by businesses to manage complex projects, functions like a souped-up Google Doc, with sections for a grocery list, to-do lists and details of upcoming trips.

More unusual is a section Mr. Lang, a venture capital investor who previously worked at Notion, created about principles (“what’s important to us as a couple”). Another section, called “Learnings,” outlines things the couple have discovered about each other, such as their love languages and Myers-Briggs test results. There’s a list of friends they want to set up on dates. They also maintain a log of memories from their date nights. Mr. Lang, 30, was so proud of the creation that last month, he started promoting a template of the setup to others. “My wife and I use Notion religiously to manage our day-to-day life,” he wrote on X. “I turned this into a template, let me know if you’d like to see it!”

The internet responded with a venomous outrage. “People have told me my wife is cheating on me, people have told me I have a dead body in my basement, people have told me I’m autistic,” he said.

But his approach isn’t entirely unusual, especially among people who work in the tech industry and want to manage their personal lives the same way they manage their professional lives. For a class of young workers, it’s only rational to apply the tools of the corporate world to their relationships and families. Businesses have goals and systems for achieving them, the thinking goes. They get things done.

Anastasia Alt, 35, uses Kanban boards — a visual tracking system where tasks progress from left to right — in Trello, a project management tool, for “literally everything.” This includes work at Yana Sleep , her e-commerce start-up, but also planning trips and events with her partner. The two of them also have a dedicated Slack work space, named after a mash-up of their surnames with a logo created using the artificial intelligence software Midjourney. She acknowledged, in jest, that some of her systems were “a little psychopathic,” but said she’s always been an optimizer.

Ms. Alt said the Slack work space has emotional benefits for her relationship, too: freeing up their text messages and in-person conversations for the fun stuff.

“I’m glad, when the workday is over, that I don’t need to address 20 minutes’ worth of semi-urgent logistical items before diving into eating takeout food and hanging out with our dogs,” she said. “Sitting in person and hashing out a schedule together is less high-quality time than sitting in person and, you know, telling jokes.”

A #gratitude channel, where the couple posts messages of appreciation or acknowledgment of what the other person is doing, has become a repository of memories she likes to look back on, almost like a photo album, she said.

Lessons From Business

Relationships are work, but no one wants to admit it.

But this particular flavor of life hacking often causes observers to collectively recoil. It threatens to take the romance and spontaneity out of life, in their view. It feels cold.

“There is a phenomenon whereby the more you try to manage your life, the more you risk squeezing the vibrancy out of it,” said Oliver Burkeman, author of “Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals.”

And yet, the crushing overwhelm of modern life, with daily to-do lists and schedules and notifications and digital logistics can feel so never-ending that any solution offering to optimize even the tiniest task — or most meaningful relationship — looks like a lifeline worth grasping for.

Emily Oster, a parenting expert and economist, rose to popularity by promoting a data-based approach to managing pregnancy, including in her latest book “The Unexpected.” She also wrote a book in 2021 called “The Family Firm,” which advises using a “business process” to make family decisions about, for instance, extracurriculars or getting your kid a phone. Some critics have attacked her approach for the same reasons they recoil from a Notion template for married couples — it can feel detached.

Dr. Oster said the problem is not systems like hers — it’s not having difficult conversations about priorities and principles. Her spreadsheets and other tools are designed to set people up for the lives they want, she said.

“Surfacing conflict on purpose is something we don’t generally like to do,” she said. “It’s hard to do at work, also, but it’s even harder to do with someone you want go to sleep with at night.”

Dr. Oster said the lesson she takes from the business world to her personal life is to make thoughtful, deliberate decisions. “I don’t think there is a limit to how far you can take that,” she said.

She’s not alone in that thinking. Even amid the backlash to Mr. Lang’s template, more than 2,400 people liked it enough to download a copy, with an option to pay up to $25.

‘They Are Craving a Solution’

Claire Kart, 40, was among those who bought the template, in part, she said, because she was amused by all the jokes about it. But also, with two kids under the age of 3, the allure of a better, more productive, more organized way of life at home was irresistible.

Ms. Kart, a marketing executive at a cryptocurrency start-up, already has some optimization systems in place with her husband, a start-up founder. They use Google’s Keep app for a shared grocery list and Google calendars to manage their schedule. She has elaborately color-coded Google Sheets for Christmas gifts and vacation planning. (She calls herself the family’s chief creative officer, as well as chief investment officer. Her husband is the chief financial officer and chief technology officer.)

Ms. Kart said systems like hers were necessary for splitting up household management duties. One person can keep everything in their head, she said, but “dividing and co-owning that work” leads to “coordination friction.”

Like Ms. Alt, she believes the systems free up their limited in-person time for more meaningful conversations. “Using that really rare time to talk about a grocery list feels lonely,” she said.

Since her second child was born a little over a year ago, Ms. Kart and her husband have been “cutting scope,” she said, using a project management phrase for doing less. “We’re in survival mode,” she said. “Just cooking dinner feels like a win.”

Mr. Lang’s template could help, she said. The only problem so far? She’s been too busy to set it up.

A smaller subset of people have always used tech tools in their personal lives, but the practice has spread in recent years. Mei Lin Ng, the co-founder of the family tech start-up, Hearth, said that one reason past attempts to create technology for the family have failed was that consumers weren’t as open to it. Her company’s product, a 27-inch screen that families can mount in their homes to display schedules, assign chores and help kids with morning and bedtime routines that became available last year, is being adopted by digitally native millennials.

“Consumers are really, really ready for something like this,” she said. “They are craving a solution.”

After Ms. Alt told her friend and fellow optimizer, Ryan Matzner, about her couples’ Slack, he immediately started his own. It was a bit of an uphill battle to get his fiancée, Kate McKenzie, on board — she is a medical school student and preferred analog tools like a paper planner — but they’re now using Trello, Slack and a shared Google calendar to plan their wedding.

Mr. Matzner, 39, co-founder of a product development agency called Fueled, realized that he had been avoiding responding to text messages from Ms. McKenzie because their thread had turned into a to-do list full of tasks.

So they dumped all their administrative tasks into Slack, which has expanded beyond wedding planning into regular life with more than 40 channels including #house-parties, #travel and #ludwig-the-car.

Being hyper-organized and efficient is a natural outgrowth of having a very active work and social life, Mr. Matzner said. He sends calendar invites the minute he makes plans and saves new friends into his contacts with their city — searchable anytime he’s in town — as well as a note if they’d be fun to invite to a dinner party. He wishes someone would build a “personal C.R.M.” (customer relationship management, the kind of system sold by companies like Salesforce), since none of the options he’s tried are entirely satisfying.

Being the organized person in a relationship can lead to friction. Kate Reznykova, 27, a venture capital investor, used to frequently field random queries like, “How do we log into our internet?” from her partner throughout the day, which tested her patience. She recently started using Mr. Lang’s Notion template to establish a “shared source of truth” for such questions. “If I get a text, I say, ‘Go to the page, it’s all there,’” she said.

Mr. Lang was amused by the attention his template got online. There were memes about divorce rates spiking in San Francisco, about “offboarding” one’s wife and about requiring your partner to submit a “purchase order approval form” to spend money. He posted his own joke version, with quarterly objectives and annual reviews for relationships.

He and Ms. Amouyal used Notion to plan their wedding — a life event that, anecdotally, seems to turn many couples into project managers — and decided to keep it going after their honeymoon. The most hated part of his template, the date night log, was simply a way to follow all the marriage advice he kept hearing, he said. Everyone told him how important it was to keep the connection strong as life gets busier and more complicated. Why not create a journal of all the fun things they’ve done together? The outsized reaction was a surprise.

“I thought a few people would respond and think it’s cute,” he said.
