It’s time for Edmonton’s changing of the seasons: winter to construction.

Edmonton's 2022 construction season continues work on major infrastructure projects Back to video

Construction crews will be working on about 250 projects across Edmonton this summer, totalling an estimated $1.9 billion in funding, according to city officials.

Because 2022 is the final year in the City of Edmonton’s current four-year budget cycle, there will actually be a bit less work underway than previous years, when there was work on 270 to 280 projects. But orange pylons and road signs will be up for construction on more than 110 kilometres of roadways and sidewalks, 11 kilometres of alleys and 10 neighbourhood renewal projects.

Adam Laughlin, deputy city manager of integrated infrastructure services at the City of Edmonton, said Friday that Edmontonians will see ongoing work on several major projects, including the Yellowhead Trail freeway conversion, the Terwillegar Drive expansion and LRT construction.

“The construction work we’re doing this year is part of the connection to our future and the city we are building to welcome another one million individuals,” he said.

He added that the construction work provides jobs for 13,000 workers and contracts for 300 companies either local to Edmonton or based in the city.

Laughlin gave details on upcoming summer construction in the middle of 103 Avenue between 100 Street and 101 Street Downtown, where a streetscape renewal project is currently underway to add sidewalk and parking improvements, as well as more benches and greenery. The project is expected to be finished this fall, and access to the road will be reopened.

Other long-term work is also ongoing. Now that funding is in place for the first phase of the LRT Capital Line south, from Century Park Station to Ellerslie Road, early works construction is going ahead for 2022.

This will be the first major construction season for the Valley Line West, which will continue for five or six years. That project will extend the LRT from Downtown to Lewis Farms in the west end.

“The utility work and some of the early work on Valley Line West, there’s major adjustments to traffic patterns there,” Laughlin said. “And then more locally, what you see is local adjustments to accommodate the different movements — auto, bike and walk.”

The Valley Line southeast, meanwhile, is expected to open this summer after being delayed multiple times . Edmontonians can expect the road detours that have been in place during construction to be removed as the work winds down.

The City of Edmonton has a traffic disruption map available on its website to help plan your way around construction detours.

Other major projects underway this year include the Yellowhead Trail freeway conversion, scheduled to be finished in 2027, and the 50 Street road widening and grade separation, expected to be done by the end of 2026.

A significant renewal project on 124 Street, between 109A Avenue and 118 Avenue, also starts in 2022. There will be parking and driving disruptions starting May 24, and work is expected to run for two construction seasons.

The City of Edmonton has a full list of ongoing construction projects available online .

Edmonton opens its first net-zero energy building

Edmonton opens its first net-zero energy building

EDMONTON, ALTA. – Edmonton’s 31st fire station is the city’s first net-zero energy building.

The total amount of energy used by the building on an annual basis will be equal to the amount of renewable energy created on the site.

“The new Windermere Station is a great example of how we are getting greener as we grow. This needed infrastructure will serve a local community, but also all of Edmonton as we strive to reach our goal of becoming a net-zero corporation by 2040,” Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi said.

The Windemere Fire Station features a solar array with 382 modules at 375W each, a geothermal field of 35 boreholes at 70m in depth, exterior wall insulation at R-35, roof insulation of R-50, and underslab insulation of R-50.

It also uses double-glazed Low-E windows, LED lighting with occupancy sensors and six side-folding bay doors.

“The Windermere Fire Station exemplifies how the city is improving energy efficiency while constructing a vital facility that will showcase our commitment to environmental sustainability. The award-winning and thoughtful design enhances the community, both visually and through the building’s positive environmental footprint,” City of Edmonton deputy city manager of integrated infrastructure services Adam Laughlin said.

The building design previously received the Canadian Architect 2018 Award of Excellence. The lead design architect was gh3, the prime architecture consultant was S2 Architecture and the construction partner was PCL Construction.

The budget for planning, design, and construction of the project was $21.5 million and the fire station has been operational since July 7.

Title: tasklama: probing the complex task understanding of language models.

Abstract: Structured Complex Task Decomposition (SCTD) is the problem of breaking down a complex real-world task (such as planning a wedding) into a directed acyclic graph over individual steps that contribute to achieving the task, with edges specifying temporal dependencies between them. SCTD is an important component of assistive planning tools, and a challenge for commonsense reasoning systems. We probe how accurately SCTD can be done with the knowledge extracted from Large Language Models (LLMs). We introduce a high-quality human-annotated dataset for this problem and novel metrics to fairly assess performance of LLMs against several baselines. Our experiments reveal that LLMs are able to decompose complex tasks into individual steps effectively, with a relative improvement of 15% to 280% over the best baseline. We also propose a number of approaches to further improve their performance, with a relative improvement of 7% to 37% over the base model. However, we find that LLMs still struggle to predict pairwise temporal dependencies, which reveals a gap in their understanding of complex tasks.

California launches dashboard to track wildfire management projects.

California officials on Tuesday launched a new website aimed at tracking how wildfire prevention projects are doing.

The interactive site, which is still in its beta version, displays the size and location of projects across the state. The website offers access to data and reports on activities such as prescribed burns, targeted grazing, uneven-aged timber harvest, fuel reduction and tree planting.

Treatments can also be sorted by categories such as region, county and land ownership.

| MORE | 2023 Wildfire Map: Here are the fires burning in California, air quality conditions

A press release from the governor's Wildfire and Forest Resilience Task Force explains that this dashboard collects data from several organizations and government departments. And while those agencies might differ in the methods of collecting information, the dashboard aims to streamline that data.

Patrick Wright is the director of the task force. He said this dashboard provides transparency in letting the public know where the billions of dollars invested in wildfire management are going.

Wright explained the website also has benefits for fire crews.

| MORE | 2023 California Wildfire Preparedness Guide: What to know and how to stay safe

"It's also really important to put in the hands of firefighters so they can see during a fire what areas have been treated in the surrounding areas," Wright said. "Different agencies in the same area can now better coordinate their efforts and plan their efforts because they know what each other are doing."

An official launch of the website is expected in spring 2024, and officials plan on further refining the current dashboard. Until then, the state is seeking feedback on improving the site.

How to Watch Tonight's 'Super Blue Moon'

T he moon has been much in the news this August. For most of the month, uncrewed spacecraft from Russia and India were in a hot cosmic race to see which country would earn the bragging rights of being the first to safely land a ship in the moon’s south polar region. On Aug. 20, Russia’s plans came to ruin , after an engine burn intended to fine-tune the ship’s descent went awry. Three days later, India—very much a newbie in the moon game— successfully stuck its landing , earning this year’s top honors for lunar exploration.

But the moon hardly needs human intervention to make cosmic headlines. Tonight (Aug. 30) at shortly after 8:30 p.m. eastern time, through the morning of Sept. 1, a rare “super blue moon” will rise in the skies, creating a spectacle that thrills photographers, amateur sky watchers and even seasoned astronomers.

The ”super blue moon” label requires a little unpacking. For starters there is nothing remotely blue about the way the moon will look tonight. Instead, the label– whose provenance is unsettled —refers to the second full moon in any single month. The last one to fill the skies was Aug. 1, so tonight’s full moon comes in just under the wire to qualify for the blue distinction. Blue moons are not common. Only 3% of full moons are blue moons, according to NASA , so tonight’s moon would be noteworthy no matter what. But then there’s the “supermoon” label to consider too. Read More: How India Became the First Country to Reach the Moon's South Pole

The moon was born in violence. About 4.5 billion years ago, a small, Mars-sized planet collided with the infant Earth, sending up a cloud of debris from both worlds that eventually coalesced into the moon. That kind of explosive release of energy was not likely to lead to a tidy, circular orbit—and it didn't. Instead the moon’s orbit is elliptical, with its closest approach to Earth—or perigee—measuring 357,000 km (222,000 miles) compared to an apogee—or farthest approach—of 406,000 km. That difference doesn’t show itself much when a moon is a mere crescent. But when it is a full moon, things are different. A full moon at perigee appears 14% larger and 30% brighter than a full moon at a more distant remove. The phenomenon is especially striking when the moon is close to the horizon, where it benefits from an optical illusion. Comparing its size to smaller surface features like houses and trees makes the lunar disk look far larger still.

For all of the hoopla created by supermoons, they’re actually quite common. About 25% of all full moons are supermoons, NASA says . This week’s is the third one of the year, with a fourth one on tap for Sept. 29. Another four will appear from August through November of next year. But a supermoon that’s also a blue moon? That’s a much rarer beast. Sometimes 20 years will elapse between the appearances of super blue moons. But if you miss this one, you don’t have to wait quite so long to see another one: According to NASA , there will be two super blue moons in January and March of 2037.

But why miss this one at all? The best viewing begins at 9:36 p.m , in the east- southeastern sky, when the moon rises fully above the horizon. The spectacle will continue through Friday morning, Sept. 1, when the moon will continue to appear full before finally entering its waning phase later that day.  The sky show is gorgeous, the sky show is free, but the sky show doesn’t happen every day. It’s best to catch this one while you can.
