How to fix microphone not working on Microsoft Teams
Is the mic not working on Microsoft Teams? If so, in this guide, you'll find multiple ways to fix this problem on Windows 11 and 10.
- Configure settings
- Permissions settings
- Disconnecting extra devices
- Privacy settings
- Troubleshooter
- Reinstall app
- Update driver
- Web version
If the microphone isn't working on Microsoft Teams, you have multiple ways to troubleshoot and fix the problem on Windows 11 (or Windows 10). While the app provides a useful system to communicate and collaborate with others, it has flaws, and you'll eventually stumble upon issues due to many factors.
For instance, sometimes, you may notice that Microsoft Teams won't be able to detect the USB microphone or the one built into the webcam you want to use. Or the app will detect the device, but you won't be able to use it for voice or video calls with add-ons.
Whatever the reason it might be, if you're having trouble using the microphone, you can use the settings available on Windows and Microsoft Teams to fix the issue.
This guide will walk you through a series of steps to troubleshoot and resolve problems with the microphone using Microsoft Teams.
How to fix Teams microphone by configuring settings
If the microphone is not working on Microsoft Teams, the problem could be settings related. This means you want to make to check the current configuration in the app to resolve the issue.
To configure the microphone on Microsoft Teams, use these steps:
- Open Microsoft Teams .
- Click the Settings and more (three-dotted) menu from the top-right.
- Select the Settings option.
- Click on Devices from the left navigation pane.
- Under the "Audio devices" section, use the Microphone drop-down menu and select the correct microphone.
- Click the Make a test call to confirm that microphone is working.
Once you complete the steps, the microphone should work without issues with the Teams app.

How to fix Teams microphone by allowing apps access to media
If the problem is with one of the add-ons that cannot access the microphone, then it's because it doesn't have enough permissions. Microsoft Teams includes privacy settings to prevent add-ons from accessing media devices and other information.
To allow apps in tabs to access your device, use these steps:
- Click the Settings option.
- Click on App Permissions .
- Select the app with the problem with Teams.
- Turn on the Media toggle switch.
Once you complete the steps, the Microsoft Teams add-on should now have access to the device peripheral.
How to fix Teams microphone by disconnecting extra devices
Sometimes when another app uses the input device, you won't be able to use the microphone with Microsoft Teams. If this is the case, close all the applications using the peripheral. In addition, restarting the computer may also help to resolve the issue.
If the microphone is not detected, try disconnecting and reconnecting it to ensure the problem isn't the physical connection. If you're using a USB microphone, you may also want to try a different cable and USB port.
You can test disconnecting the peripherals on computers with multiple microphones (such as the one built into the webcam, USB microphone, or one with the traditional headphone jack). And then, try the one integrated into the device (if applicable), followed by the one built into the external webcam, and finally, the microphone with a direct connection to confirm which one works with Teams.
How to fix Teams microphone by adjusting privacy settings
Usually, when an app can't access the microphone, it is because the system is blocking the device with the privacy settings.

- Under the "Allow access to the microphone on this device" section, click the Change button.
- Turn on the "Microphone access for this device" toggle switch.
- Turn on the "Allow apps to access your microphone" section toggle switch.
- Turn on the "Allow desktop apps to access the microphone" toggle switch.
Once you complete the steps, the collaboration app should now be able to access and use the microphone connected to your computer.

- Double-click the file to launch the installer.
After you complete the steps, the app will install automatically, and now, the microphone should start working like before.
How to fix Teams microphone by adding newer driver
If the microphone still doesn't work, it could be a problem with the device driver. If this is the case, you may be able to resolve the issue by updating or using an older version of the driver.
Update drivers on Windows 11
To update the driver, whether it's a standalone or integrated microphone, use these steps:
- Click on Windows Update .
- Click the Advanced options page on the right side.
- Click the Drivers section.
- Select the driver for the device or webcam.
- Click the "Download and install" button.
Once you complete the steps, you should be able to use the microphone with Microsoft Teams.

- Quick tip: If the option isn't available, there are no newer driver updates on Windows Update.
After you complete the steps, the microphone should work again with the Teams app.
If there are no newer drivers, you may need to check the manufacturer's support website to download and install a newer update using their instructions.
Reinstall microphone driver on Windows 10 or 11
If you're using a USB microphone or input device built into the webcam, then there's a chance that the driver has been damaged, and reinstalling the peripheral may resolve the problem.
To reinstall a device driver on Windows 10 (or Windows 11), use these steps:
- Open Start .
- Search for Device Manager and click the top result to open the app.
- Expand the Sound, video, and game controllers branch if this is a standalone microphone, or the "Imaging devices, Cameras, or Sound, video, and game controllers" branch if this is a webcam.
- Right-click the peripheral and select the Uninstall device option.
- Click on Actions .
- Click the "Scan for hardware changes" option.
After you complete the steps, launch Microsoft Teams and confirm the microphone is working.
Rollback microphone driver
If you recently installed an updated version of the driver, then a bug could be why the microphone isn't working. In this case, rolling back to the previous version may resolve the issue.
To roll back to the previous version of the driver, use these steps:
- Expand the "Sound, video, and game controllers" branch if this is a standalone microphone, or the "Imaging devices, Cameras, or Sound, video, and game controllers" branch if this is a webcam.
- Right-click the peripheral and select the Properties option.
- Click on the Driver tab.
- Click the "Roll Back Driver" button.
- Quick tip: If the option isn't available, the system does not have a backup of the driver. In this case, you won't be able to roll back the driver.
- Select one of the reasons you're rolling back.
- Click the Yes button.
- Click the Yes button again.
- Restart your computer.
Once you complete the steps, Microsoft Teams should now be able to detect the peripheral.
How to fix Teams microphone by using web version
When all else has failed, you should consider using the web version of Microsoft Teams to get to the meeting without any more delays.
To start a voice call with Teams on the web, use these steps:
- Open Microsoft Teams web .
- Quick tip: You must a use a supported browser, such as the latest version of Microsoft Edge, Chrome, or Firefox. Teams is not supported on Internet Explorer.
- Sign in with your account information.
- Click the "Use the web app instead" option (if applicable).
- Click the View site information button to the left of the address bar.
- Under the "Permissions for this site" section, select the Allow option for the "Microphone" setting.
After you complete the steps, you should now be able to use Microsoft Teams with the microphone.
If you're still having problems, it's likely a physical issue with the device.

How to Fix Your Microphone Not Working on Microsoft Teams for Windows
Microphones are a key component of online conferencing. Here's how to get your microphone working on Microsoft Teams for Windows.
A microphone is essential for voice calling and video conferencing within Microsoft Teams. However, some Teams users can’t make voice or video calls when their microphones stop working with that app. When that happens, your microphones might still work fine for other apps but not with Microsoft Teams.
Consequently, users can only utilize Teams for text messaging when their microphones don’t work with that app. However, video conferencing is an important feature many users need for meetings. This is how you can fix a microphone that’s not working with the Microsoft Teams software in Windows 10 and 11.
1. Run the Recording Audio and Speech Troubleshooter
The Speech and Recording Audio troubleshooters are two tools that can be useful for fixing microphone issues in Windows 11/10. However, running the Speech troubleshooter is better since that’s more specifically for resolving audio input issues. You can select to run both troubleshooters via the Control Panel in Windows 11/10 like this:
- First, launch the Run command dialog , which you can quickly access by pressing Win + R .
- Input a Control Panel command within the Run dialog’s Open text box.
- Click Large icons from the View by menu to change the Control Panel view if necessary.
- Apply resolutions suggested within the troubleshooter.
- If the Speech troubleshooter doesn’t resolve the issue, try running Recording Audio one. Click Recording Audio in the Control Panel’s troubleshooting list and then select options for applying the potential fixes suggested.
2. Enable Microphone Access for Microsoft Teams
It could be the case that your microphone isn’t enabled for Teams. You can check and configure microphone permission options for apps via Settings. This is how to enable microphone access for Microsoft Teams:
- Press the Windows keyboard button to view the Start menu and select Settings.
- Next, select Privacy to access navigation options for Windows permission settings.
- If the Microphone access option is disabled, turn that option on.
- Also, enable the Let desktop apps access your Microphone setting if you utilize the Microsoft Teams desktop software version.
- Then scroll down to Microsoft Teams in the app list to check mic access is enabled for it.
3. Check Your Microphone of Choice Is Enabled and Set to Default
Your microphone of choice for Teams must be enabled and set to default. So, check that the microphone you’re trying to utilize with Teams is enabled and set to default like this:
- Click the search tool’s taskbar button (a magnifying glass) or text box.
- Input mmsys.cpl to find a Control Panel applet for configuring sound settings.
- Select mmsys.cpl to view a Sound window.
- Then select your microphone and press the Set Default button.
- Click Apply to save the adjusted options.
4. Increase Your Microphone’s Volume Level
Your microphone won’t be usable with Microsoft Teams if it’s muted or set at a very low volume. So, maybe you need to raise your mic’s volume level. This is how you can increase your mic’s volume via the Sound window.
- Open the Sound window’s Recording tab, as covered in steps one to four of the previous potential resolution.
- Select your microphone and click Properties .
- Click the Levels tab.
- Drag the slider on the Microphone bar further right somewhere close to at least an 80 percent volume setting.
- Press the microphone properties window’s Apply and OK buttons.
5. Check the Right Audio Input Device is Set in Teams
A common reason for a microphone not working with Microsoft Teams is that a user hasn’t selected the right audio input device within the app. Make sure you’ve got the audio input device you’re trying to utilize selected in Teams. You can select a microphone in the Microsoft Teams desktop software as follows:
- Open your Microsoft Teams software.
- Select the Devices tab in the Settings window.
If you’re utilizing the Teams UWP app in Windows 11, you’ll have to select the right mic within a meeting. Set up and join a meeting in the app. Click the More actions (three-dot) button within the meeting window to select Device settings . Then select the correct input audio device in the Microphone drop-down menu.
6. Perform Some Generic Windows-Based Fixes
There are some fixes you can try that work with all Windows apps that can't use your microphone. These include:
Repair/Reset the Microsoft Teams UWP App
This potential solution is only applicable to the Microsoft Teams Universal Windows Platform app. That app’s Repair and Reset options in Settings could come in handy for fixing this microphone issue. Try selecting the Reset option for Microsoft Teams, as instructed in our article about resetting Microsoft Store apps . You can also select a Repair option just above the Reset button.
Reinstall the Microphone’s Driver
Your audio input might not be working with Teams because of a microphone driver issue. Reinstalling that driver could resolve the issue. These are the steps for reinstalling a microphone’s driver in Windows 11/10:
- Press the Windows key + X to access a menu of shortcuts for numerous system tools.

Reinstall Microsoft Teams
Reinstalling Microsoft Teams might be necessary to fix this microphone issue if all other potential fixes fail. Some of that app’s files could be corrupted on your PC, which this resolution will likely remedy. You should be able to remove both the Microsoft Teams UWP and desktop apps via Apps & features, as covered within this article about uninstalling Windows software .
Then you’ll have two options for reinstalling Microsoft Teams. You can download and install the UWP app by clicking Get in Store on this Microsoft Store page . Or you can install the desktop software by clicking Download for desktop on the Microsoft Teams page . If you go for the latter option, you’ll need to double-click the downloaded MSTeamsSetup_c_l.exe file to install the desktop software with its setup wizard.
Utilize Your Microphone in Microsoft Teams Again
So, don’t be in too much of a hurry to ditch Microsoft Teams for Skype or other alternatives when your microphone stops working with that app. At least try applying some of the potential fixes above for getting a microphone to work with Teams first. One will probably work, but you can also contact a support agent about this issue from this Microsoft help page .

Manage the Audio Conferencing settings for your organization in Microsoft Teams
- 27 contributors
- Applies to: Microsoft Teams
It might be easier for you to see all of the audio conferencing settings for Microsoft Teams in one place.
We are frequently updating how you can manage features, so the steps here might be a little different from what you see.
Assign an Audio Conferencing license
You can't assign licenses using Teams. You must use the Microsoft 365 admin center. See Assign Microsoft Teams add-on licenses .
To assign a license for a user
Sign in to Microsoft 365 with your work or school account.
In the left navigation of the Microsoft 365 admin center , go to Users > Active users , and then select the user or users from the list of available users.
If you are assigning licenses to up to 20 users at the same time, you can use the Select a view drop-down then choose one of the options or create your own view. Then click Edit , Next twice then select the license and click Submit .
In the Action pane under Product licenses , select Edit .
On the Product Licenses page, turn on Audio Conferencing and then select Save . For more on licensing, see Microsoft Teams add-on licensing .
After you assign the license, Microsoft might not appear initially in the list as an audio conferencing provider. If this happens, either log out of the admin center or press CTRL+F5 to refresh the browser window.
Enable or disable emails sent to audio conferencing users
Enable or disable using the microsoft teams admin center.
In the left navigation, go to Meetings > Conference Bridges .
At the top of the Conference Bridges page, select Bridge settings .
In the Bridge settings pane, enable or disable Automatically send emails to users if their dial-in settings change .
Select Save .
Enable or disable using Windows PowerShell
For more information, see Microsoft Teams PowerShell reference .
Reset a conference organizer's PIN
Each meeting that a user schedules gets assigned a unique conference ID. Although a conference ID is automatically created and assigned to a user, there might be times when a user doesn't want to use or lost their conference ID. You can set the ID to a specific number.
Reset a conference organizer's PIN using the Microsoft Teams admin center
In the left navigation, select Users , and then select the user from the list of available users.
Under Audio Conferencing , select Reset PIN , and then select Reset .
Users receive an email with their PIN when they're enabled for audio conferencing or when the PIN is reset. But if you disabled automatically sending emails, a PIN reset email isn't sent and you have to manually send the PIN to the user. The PIN is only shown once after the reset. Once it is displayed after being reset, the PIN isn't be shown anymore on the user properties; instead, ***** will be shown.
See Reset the Audio Conferencing PIN .
Send an email with Audio Conferencing information to a user
Send an email using the microsoft teams admin center.
Under Audio Conferencing , select Send conference info in email .
When you do this, the audio conferencing PIN isn't sent to the user.
See Send an email to a user with their Audio Conferencing information .
Set the phone numbers included on invites
Set invite phone numbers using the microsoft teams admin center.
Refer to Set the phone numbers included on invites in Microsoft Teams .
You can also set phone numbers by adding them to the TeamsAudioconferencingpolicy and assigning the policy to your users. Toll and toll-free phone numbers added to the policy take precedence over the phone numbers set individually for users via the audio conferencing settings pane. If no phone numbers are added to the Teamsaudioconferencingpolicy , then the phone number set individually for users via the audio conferencing settings pane will be displayed in Microsoft Teams meeting requests. Audio Conferencing policy settings for toll and toll-free numbers has more information.
Choose audio conferencing bridge settings
Set the meeting experience when callers join a meeting using the microsoft teams admin center.
In the Bridge settings pane, enable or disable Meeting entry and exit notifications .
This setting is enabled by default. If you disable this option, users who already joined the meeting by default aren't notified when someone enters or leaves the meeting.
Under Entry/exit announcement type , choose either Tones or Names or phone numbers .
If you choose Names or phone numbers , you can also choose to enable or disable Ask callers to record their name before joining the meeting .
By default, external participants can't see the phone numbers of dialed-in participants. If you want to maintain the privacy of these phone numbers, select Tones for Entry/exit announcement type (this prevents the numbers from being read out by Teams).
See Change the settings for an Audio Conferencing bridge .
Set the PIN length for meetings
In the Bridge settings pane, enter the number of digits you want for the PIN in the PIN length list, and then select Save .
The PIN must be between 4 and 12 digits. The default is 5.
Enable or disable email from being sent to audio users
In the Bridge settings pane, enable or disable Automatically send emails to users if their audio conferencing settings change .
You can also send email to the user with the audio conferencing settings, by going to the user's audio conferencing properties and clicking Send conference info in email .
If you do this, an email is sent that only includes the conference phone number, but the PIN isn't included.
See and set the primary (default) and secondary (alternate) languages on an audio conferencing bridge
See primary and secondary languages using the microsoft teams admin center.
Select a phone number from the list and select Edit .
Choose the languages you want under Default language and Alternate languages (optional) .
See Set auto attendant languages for Audio Conferencing .
See audio conferencing dial-in numbers using the Microsoft Teams admin center
Select a phone number from the list and select Edit . Here you can:
View the phone numbers that are to be used for Audio Conferencing.
View the location, and the primary language that the Audio Conferencing auto attendant uses.
See See a list of Audio Conferencing numbers .
Setting audio conferencing dial-in numbers in PowerShell
You can set a user's audio conferencing toll and toll-free number in PowerShell.
Connect to the Microsoft Teams service.
Assign a toll number to a user (for example, assign the toll number +612 800 0000 to [email protected]).
Optional: assign a toll-free number to a user (for example, assign the toll-free number +61 1800 000 000 to [email protected]).
You can only assign toll or toll-free numbers that are registered within your tenant.

Teams switching audio device between calls
We have given several staff bluetooth headsets for making calls via teams. The headsets are not dropping out during calls, but between calls Teams is periodically switching the audio device to something else.
I suspect that the bluetooth headset is essentially going to sleep after not being used for a while, and Teams is no longer detecting it, so is switching to a different audio device, but is not switching back when the headset is turned back on.
Frustratingly, the issue is not consistent, as some users seem to have no problem at all, while others have it regularly, and also the users who are effected don't experience it consistently. Sometimes they can go hours between calls and it picks right back up where it left off, other times they might go 10 minutes between calls only to find that it has disconnected again, and the sound is coming out from speakers instead of the headset.
I have only noticed this on a couple of more recent cases, but at least some of the time, it is only the speakers which are changing, Teams is still using the headset microphone. I'm not sure yet whether this is happening every time and I just didn't notice it the first few times, or not.

Good day! Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft community.
I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with Teams switching audio device between calls. I'll do my best to assist you.
Please check if the Bluetooth headsets are listed under the Microsoft Teams phones Certification Program or not:

Also, please verify the below steps:
1. Check for Updates:
Ensure that both your Windows operating system and Microsoft Teams app are up to date.
To update your Bluetooth drivers:
Open Device Manager.
Navigate to the Bluetooth section.
Right-click on your Bluetooth headset and select “Update driver.”
If you encounter any issues updating drivers, you can manually update them using following link Update drivers manually in Windows - Microsoft Support .
2. Restart Your Computer:
Sometimes a simple restart can resolve system-level issues affecting audio.
Restart your computer and check if the problem persists.
3. Check Teams Audio Settings:
Open the Teams app.
Click on your profile picture in the top right corner.
Go to “Settings” > “Devices.”
Under “Audio devices,” ensure that your Bluetooth headset is selected for both “Speaker” and “Microphone” (if your headset has a microphone).
Additionally, try disabling “Hands-Free AG Audio” under “Playback devices” in your system sound settings.
4. Verify Bluetooth Headset Selection:
Confirm that your Bluetooth headset is selected as the audio output device in Teams’ audio settings.
You can try switching to another audio output device and then back to your headset to see if that resolves the issue.
Additionally, could you please check the same behavior still persist if you trying to use another (Different model) Bluetooth headset device for a Teams call?
5. Uninstall and Reinstall Teams:
If none of the above steps work, consider uninstalling and reinstalling Teams on your laptop. This might resolve the audio output issue.
6. Try Web Teams Using a Browser:
Use Microsoft Teams via the Edge or Chrome browser and check if the issue persists. This will help diagnose whether the problem is specific to the Teams app.
Access Teams via https://teams.microsoft.com/
Update drivers manually in Windows - Microsoft Support
7. Try Classic Teams Application:
Please switch your teams, New to classic and monitor the behavior. Then let us share your experience.
