The Ultimate Guide to Finding the Best Portable WiFi for Travel
In today’s digital age, staying connected while traveling has become a necessity. Whether you’re on a business trip or exploring new destinations, having access to reliable internet is crucial. That’s where portable WiFi devices come in handy. In this ultimate guide, we will explore the world of portable WiFi for travel and help you find the best option that suits your needs.
Understanding Portable WiFi
Portable WiFi devices, also known as pocket WiFi or mobile hotspots, allow you to connect to the internet wirelessly wherever you go. These compact gadgets use cellular data networks to create a personal WiFi network that can be accessed by multiple devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
One of the main advantages of portable WiFi is its convenience. Instead of relying on public Wi-Fi networks or purchasing local SIM cards, these devices offer a reliable and secure connection without the hassle of searching for available networks or dealing with complicated setups.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Portable WiFi Device
Coverage: One of the most important factors to consider when selecting a portable WiFi device is coverage. Different providers have varying coverage areas, so it’s essential to choose one that offers reliable coverage in your desired travel destinations.
Data Plans: Another key consideration is data plans offered by different providers. Look for plans that offer sufficient data allowance at reasonable prices. Some providers may also offer unlimited data options but be aware that there may be fair usage policies in place.
Battery Life: Since portable WiFi devices are battery-powered, it’s crucial to choose one with a decent battery life. Look for devices that can last throughout your travel day without requiring frequent recharging.
Connectivity Options: Check if the device supports multiple connectivity options such as 4G LTE and 5G networks. This ensures faster internet speeds and compatibility with different generations of mobile networks.
Top Portable WiFi Devices for Travel
Skyroam Solis: This popular portable WiFi device offers global coverage in over 130 countries. With flexible data plans and fast internet speeds, the Skyroam Solis is an excellent choice for frequent travelers.
GlocalMe G4 Pro: The GlocalMe G4 Pro provides reliable connectivity in over 140 countries. It offers competitive data plans and features a built-in power bank, making it a convenient option for those who need to charge their devices on the go.
TP-Link M7350: The TP-Link M7350 supports 4G LTE networks and allows you to create a WiFi hotspot for up to 10 devices simultaneously. With its compact design and long battery life, it’s an ideal choice for travelers.
Tips for Using Portable WiFi Devices Effectively
Check Local Regulations: Before using your portable WiFi device in a new country, make sure you are aware of any local regulations regarding the use of such devices to avoid any legal issues.
Secure Your Connection: Protect your personal information by setting up a strong password for your portable WiFi network. Additionally, consider using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to encrypt your data while browsing.
Monitor Data Usage: Keep an eye on your data consumption to avoid exceeding your plan’s limits or incurring additional charges. Most portable WiFi devices have companion apps that allow you to monitor and manage your data usage conveniently.
Finding the best portable WiFi device for travel doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By considering factors such as coverage, data plans, battery life, and connectivity options, you can select a device that meets your specific needs. Whether you choose the Skyroam Solis, GlocalMe G4 Pro, or TP-Link M7350, having reliable internet access while traveling will ensure you stay connected wherever your adventures take you.

Frequently asked questions
If i'm not happy with my nbn connection, can i cancel.

Read our nbn™ satisfaction guarantee .
Does my nbn plan include a landline handset?
No, but you can buy a landline handset from Telstra.
If you just want a home phone line, you can take up a Telstra office phone plan .
What will happen to my existing ADSL/Cable connection?
Once you connect to the nbn network, you won’t be able to access your internet and voice services through your ADSL/Cable connection. Instead, you’ll access them through your new nbn network connection. And once connected to the nbn network, you won’t be able to move your services back.
It’s also worth noting that when you request for your business internet and voice services be moved to the nbn network, you’re giving consent to the installation of services on the nbn network on behalf of all account holders at your premises.
What will it cost me to connect to the nbn?
- Self install your modem for $0 We’ll send you a new modem if you need it, with easy instructions to install it yourself.
- Professional install You can get your modem and gear connected by a Telstra professional technician for a one-off fee of $299.
- Additional costs apply for non-standard installations if you have complex cabling requirements.
What happens to my existing phone lines?
Once you switch to the nbn™, your phone will run via the internet. This means you can only have one phone line and it must be connected to your modem.
How does the nbn connection process work?
- If the nbn network isn’t already at your address, once you place an order with us we’ll help you arrange an nbn installation appointment. This is so an nbn co technician can connect the nbn to your address.
- If you’re a new customer you’ll receive a new Telstra Smart Modem. If you’re already with us, we’ll check your existing modem and if it isn’t compatible with nbn, we’ll send you the new smart modem.
- You can install the Telstra Smart Modem yourself using the easy self-install kit included. Or get our tech experts to help you for a one-off fee.
- Jump on the nbn and go!
Why do I need an nbn installation appointment?
You’ll need an installation appointment so that an nbn co technician can come to your address and connect you to the nbn network. Once the external connection gear is live, we’ll be able to deliver fast, reliable nbn to your business premises.
Already have an active nbn connection? If you already have an active nbn connection, you probably won’t need a technician to visit. We’ll work this out once you place your order.
Can I change my current Telstra internet plan?
Yes, just purchase a new Telstra nbn plan and we’ll switch you over to the nbn easily.
You’ll then be able to change plans up to once a month or cancel anytime. Simply pay out your modem if you leave before 24 months.
I'm a Priority Assist customer. Will this change how nbn is installed for my business?
If you’re an eligible Priority Assist customer, we'll install your modem for you at no cost.
To check if you're eligible, go to Priority Assist .
What if I have a medical or security alarm?
If you have a security alarm, ask your alarm provider if it’s compatible with the nbn™ network. If it’s not, ask about alternatives. Do this before you switch to the nbn network, or your alarm may not work.
Got a question about Telstra internet, or need support with your order? We’re here to help.

Most customers only need one service. Having an additional nbn service at your address means you’ll have to pay for an additional nbn plan and install a new modem.
If there are no additional available nbn lines at your address, we may need to install a new one, which may increase the time to complete your order, and there may be set up costs.
Each nbn line at your address could have different maximum speeds.
We'll ask at checkout about additional nbn services.
Are you sure you want an additional service?
If you order an additional service, we’ll need to install a new line, which means you may incur additional fees and delays. Ordering an additional service also means there will be more than one service at this address.

Why can’t I get this plan?
We only offer speeds that we’re sure your connection can achieve.
The maximum speeds available at an address are dependant on the technology used to connect the premises to the nbn network. They will be the same no matter who you buy an internet plan from.
This may be due to one of 2 reasons:
- The technology at your address is unable to support the speeds included in this plan – so you’d be paying for speeds that you can’t achieve. We only offer you plans based on the maximum upload and download speeds allowable.
- At some addresses, we’re unable to estimate the maximum speeds available until you’re on your new plan (particularly if you’re a new customer). Before then, we can’t be sure that the nbn connection at your address can achieve this plan’s speeds. We do this to ensure you don’t pay for speeds you can’t achieve.
Once you’re connected, if we determine that your technology can support this plan’s speeds, we’ll let you know.
