Academic Advising

Advising Information & Helpful Resources

Welcome to the BBA Academic Advising page!

BBA students in the McCombs School of Business are served by the BBA Academic Advising team. CBHP and iMPA students should work directly with their advising teams.

When you have questions or concerns, here are all the ways you can work with an academic advisor:

Drop-in Advising: Full Schedule of Drop-in Advising Days for Spring 2024 !

During the first 12 days of classes and the Friday prior, our advising team will see students on a virtual drop-in basis only so we can serve as many students as possible:

10am-12pm & 1-3pm

All drop-ins will be virtual in WaitWell

NOTE: The WaitWell system will give you an estimated wait time, and then notify you when an advisor is ready for you to join their Zoom link. Once you join an advisor's Zoom waiting room, note that it may take a few more minutes before they are ready to meet with you as they review your record.

Wait times for registration advising drop-ins may be longer than usual, so you might need to log out and return to drop-ins at a different time or day. We appreciate your patience!

Other Advising Information:

  • Schedule an appointment through your McCombs BBA Advising Canvas Appointments are most appropriate for registration advising, long-term degree planning, study abroad planning, and more in-depth questions that may take more time.
  • Log in for virtual drop-in advising . Throughout the semester, we host drop-ins from 10am-12pm and 1-3pm on Waitwell . Drop-ins are great for quick questions or time-sensitive issues.
  • Email with an advisor. See your McCombs BBA Advising Canvas page for contact information.
  • Text us with quick and simple questions. McCombs students will receive a text message from our office at the start of each semester, and should save that number to use to text us back.
  • Visit our front desk in CBA 2.400 or email [email protected] to speak with a Peer Advisor (PA). Our PAs are available to answer questions, help you set up advising appointments, and refer you to appropriate offices.
  • You had a Degree Modification Request (DMR) approved to use a substitute course in your BBA degree, and now need that course to count as a prerequisite for a future course.
  • You completed a business course in transfer, are waiting for the official transcript to be posted, but need the course to count as a prerequisite for a future course. Example: you completed ACC 311 in transfer, and are trying to register for ACC 312.

Dual Degree Programs

Dual degree programs are structured so that a student can pursue graduate work in two fields and fulfill the requirements of two degrees. In programs leading to two master’s degrees, the degrees are awarded simultaneously.

To enter a dual degree program, the student must:

  • First be accepted by both of the individual programs before admission can be granted to the dual degree program.
  • Observe the application deadlines of both programs.
  • Pay only one application fee. Applicants to dual degree programs—or to more than one graduate program—will pay only the higher of the application fees.

Contact the admission coordinator, graduate adviser or graduate coordinator in each individual program before submitting the application for admission.

Dual Degree Programs at UT Austin

These dual degree programs are offered at UT Austin. Select the programs you are interested in to learn more.

Dual Degree Programs with Other Institutions

The university offers a small number of dual degree programs in which students simultaneously pursue a UT Austin degree and a degree from another institution.

Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration

The Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration provides a thorough education in the theory and practice of business. The degree provides an understanding of multiple business disciplines, and upon completing the degree, graduates will have the competency to make sound business decisions through effective, evidence-based analysis, interpretation, problem-solving and reasoning. The program emphasizes interpersonal skill-development, including the ability to write and orally communicate ideas and solutions in both business and non-business settings. Students also learn to recognize and apply concepts related to group motivation and conflict. Emphasis is also placed on the skills to use quantitative data, appropriate techniques and models to contextualize, address and analyze business problems and support business decisions. In a global sense, students also learn to understand legal, multicultural, political and ethical issues related to business.

In addition to the requirements for the major, students must meet all other university requirements for a bachelor’s degree. Please consult the Graduation Requirements for the Bachelor’s Degree    section in this catalog for complete information.

Admission to the Business Administration Major

Admission to the Business Administration major involves two steps. Students who apply to the major are initially classified as Pre-Business. After completing the lower-division core requirements with a “C” (2.0) or better, students may apply to the Business Administration major.

All of the following requirements must be met for the degree. Students must earn a “C” (2.0) or better in each core course listed below. In concentrations that require ISDS 351, the course must be passed with a “C” (2.0) or better. For assistance in interpreting these requirements, contact the Business Advising Center.

Grades and Residence

Maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average in all college level units attempted, all units attempted at CSUF, all units attempted in the major and all units attempted in the concentration. Earn a “C” (2.0) or better in each core course. A “C-” (1.7) or lower is not a passing grade.

Take all required core and concentration courses in the College of Business and Economics for a letter grade (A, B, C, D, F). The exceptions are calculus courses, which may be taken under the Credit/No Credit grading option; however, if it is also taken to meet general education requirements then it must be taken for a letter grade.

A minimum 30 units in the major and at least one-half of the units in the concentration (except Accounting, which requires 15) must be taken in residence in the College of Business and Economics; at least 15 of the last 24 units taken before graduation must be in residence in the College of Business and Economics.

Frequently Asked Questions

From whom should i seek advising related to the business minor.

Everyone in the Business Minors Office offers guidance to students exploring or enrolled in the Business Minor. Sarah Singer oversees the Business Minors team and meets with students Monday through Friday during normal business hours. In addition, our team of friendly, experienced peer advisors are available for student advising Monday – Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The entire team may be reached via email ( [email protected] ), by phone at 512-232-6748, or in-person in CBA 2.400.

Do I have to apply to the Business Minor in order to take courses required for the minor (i.e. ACC 310F, FIN 320F, etc.)?

No. Any undergraduate UT student who is a non-business major is eligible to enroll in these courses.

Are courses in the Business Minor available elsewhere? Can I transfer credit for courses into the Business Minor?

University Extension  regularly offers the business minor courses. However, it is important to remember: if you plan to earn the Business Minor, no more than three non-residence courses may be substituted for courses taught in the McCombs School of Business. Non-residence courses include those taken through University Extension (UEX), transferred from other institutions, or earned through credit-by-exam. See the Automated Transfer Equivalency System to verify transfer credit. UEX courses are factored into a student's UT GPA.

May I take another course to satisfy the MIS 302F requirement?

A number of courses fulfill the MIS requirement. For a complete list, see the MIS Equivalency Guide.

Do any other UT Austin accounting courses fulfill the ACC 310F requirement?

Credit for both ACC 311 (Financial Accounting) AND ACC 312 (Managerial Accounting) or their equivalents may be used to satisfy ACC 310F.

Do Business Minor courses have prerequisites?

Our Lower division minor courses do not have prerequisites. Students must have credit for ACC 310F before they can register for FIN 320F. Students must have 45 hours of college credit before they can register for upper division business minor courses.

Can I use business minor courses toward a business degree at UT?

Currently, only MIS 302F and LEB 320F are permitted to count toward the BBA degree for students who are admitted through internal transfer.

May I take Business Minor courses on a pass/fail basis?

All required courses for the Business Minor must be taken for a letter grade.

Will courses I take on a UT study abroad program satisfy my Business Minor requirements?

Only certain pre-approved study abroad courses count as Business Minor equivalents. Visit the TEXAS Global Office to see if your program has offered any Business Minor courses in the past. If you wish to take a course abroad that is not pre-approved in the MyCA database, you will need to obtain the syllabus for the program and work with the TEXAS Global to have the course syllabus evaluated in the appropriate department.

Please note that Foundations of Business Law (LEB 320F) may not be taken abroad.

Will courses I take on a non-UT study abroad program satisfy my Business Minor requirements?

Although it is less likely a course from a non-UT study abroad program will count toward the Business Minor, you may request that the course be evaluated. You may petition using the Business Minor Substitution Request. Keep in mind that courses taken abroad on a non-UT program will be considered transfer credit. Also, at least 50 percent of Business Minor course work must be taken in-residence or through the McCombs Summer Institute. In-residence does NOT include University Extension, transfer credit, or credit-by-exam.

I took a business law class at another college. Can I count my "LEB 3 HRS" transfer credit as LEB 320F?

No. "LEB 3HRS" transfer credit is the equivalent of a lower division course. You need to have transfer credit for LEB 323 or LEB 320F in order for it to count toward the Business Minor.

Will I receive a printed document indicating I have completed the Business Minor? Will the Business Minor appear on my UT transcript?

While you will not receive a printed document (ex. a certificate), the Business Minor credential will be automatically applied to your transcript upon graduation, as long as you applied and were accepted to the minor, linked the credential to your degree profile, and successfully completed all requirements. The credential will appear on your official UT transcript when you officially graduate; it will not appear on your transcript any time before then - even if you complete the courses a semester or two before you graduate.

What is the Business Minor worth to employers or an MBA program?

The Business Minor is an enhancement to your major and sets you apart from job candidates who do not have business course credit. It demonstrates to potential employers that, in addition to knowledge of your major, you have fundamental business knowledge that you will bring to your job. Additionally, the courses will typically meet the prerequisite requirements for many graduate business programs. Be sure to check the admissions requirements for the programs that you are interested in applying to!

I am a graduate student. How do I register for a Business Minor course?

A letter from your graduate advisor is needed if trying to add an undergraduate business course. The letter can be emailed to [email protected] and should explain that the class requested is required for your program of study. Students with the letter will be able to attend drop-ins to be added to the course on the first class day if space is available.  We'll accommodate based on course availability up until the fifth class day. For more information, you can view our BBA Registration website .

Have you taken an equivalent course? Let us know.

If you have credit for a course you believe is equivalent to one of the courses required for the business minor, you may petition to have the course evaluated for possible substitution.

Complete the petition on the Business Minor Substitution Request website, and allow 2 to 3 weeks for processing.

Admission and readmission of undergraduate students to the University is the responsibility of the University director of admissions. Information about admission to the University is given in the  General Information Catalog .

Each year there are more qualified applicants to the McCombs School than can adequately be instructed by the faculty or accommodated within existing facilities. To provide students with the best educational experience possible, the school must limit undergraduate admission. Therefore, admission to the school is extremely competitive and admission requirements are more stringent than those of the University. As a result, a student may be admitted to the University but denied admission to the school. The student must be admitted to the school to pursue a degree program described in this catalog.

Admission to the school is granted for the fall semester only; summer session admission may be possible for freshmen. Students admitted for fall are expected to attend Orientation the summer before they enter the school.

To be considered for admission to the school, Texas-resident high school students must be granted regular admission to the University. However, because enrollment is limited by the availability of instructional resources, admission requirements for business degree programs are more restrictive than those of the University. High school rank, SAT Reasoning Test or American College Testing Program (ACT) scores, extracurricular activities, and essays are among the factors used in making admission decisions. A student who is admitted to the University but denied admission to the school may seek admission to another academic program at the University.

Because of enrollment restrictions dictated by the availability of faculty and facilities in the school and by the limitations on nonresident enrollment imposed by the Board of Regents, nonresident applicants may find the admission process extremely competitive.

Students may apply for admission through the Office of Admissions website, http://admissions.utexas.edu/ . To be considered for admission to the McCombs School of Business, the student should specify business as his or her intended major. All application materials must be submitted to the Office of Admissions by the deadline to apply for admission to the University for the summer session or fall semester; these dates are given in the  General Information Catalog .

Students who were admitted to the University with deficiencies in high school units must remove them by the means prescribed in the  General Information Catalog .  Credit used to remove a deficiency may not be counted toward the degree. It may be earned on the pass/fail basis. Students may not declare a major until high school unit deficiencies have been removed.

A student who transfers to the university must provide evidence that he or she has fulfilled the foreign language proficiency requirement for the Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Students may not declare a major until the foreign language proficiency requirement has been met.

A former student who was most recently enrolled in the McCombs School of Business and who is readmitted to the University reenters the major in which he or she was last enrolled. However, a former business student who has earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree at the University is readmitted with the classification “non-degree seeking student.”

A former student who was most recently classified as a pre-business student will be readmitted to the transitional student classification. The student may then apply for admission to a business major according to the procedures given in the section Internal Transfer.

Transfer Admission

Students enrolled in other programs at the University who wish to enter a degree program described in this catalog must submit an application for a change of major to the BBA Program Office by May 15 to be considered for admission in the following fall semester. The following minimum requirements for consideration are in addition to the requirements to transfer from one division to another that are given in the  General Information Catalog .

  • Completion of 24 semester hours of coursework in residence on the letter-grade basis by the end of the preceding spring semester; these hours must count towards the BBA degree
  • Completion of Mathematics 408Q  or  408R  when taken in residence, or  Mathematics 408K  and  408L , or Mathematics 408N  and  408S , or  Mathematics 408C  and  408D , or the equivalent
  • Completion of Economics 304K and 304L
  • Students must meet the admission standards for foreign language proficiency, requiring two years of a single foreign language in high school or one year of a single foreign language in college
  • A grade point average of at least 3.25 on University in-residence coursework

Students are strongly encouraged to complete Rhetoric and Writing 306 or its equivalent before starting classes in the McCombs School of Business.

An applicant’s disciplinary record, as maintained by the Office of the Dean of Students, will be reviewed for academic dishonesty or other violations of University policy. Violations will be reported to the Admissions Committee and taken into account as part of the application process. Violations may exclude a student from admission depending on the nature and severity of the offense(s).

Admission is granted on a space-available basis and may not be possible if instructional resources are not compatible with enrollment demands.

A student seeking to transfer to the McCombs School of Business from another university should list business as his or her intended major on the admission application. Because students are not admitted to the school for the spring, application materials must be submitted to the Office of Admissions by the appropriate deadline for the student to be considered for admission in the following fall semester. The following minimum requirements for consideration are in addition to the requirements for transfer admission that are given in the  General Information Catalog .

  • Completion of Mathematics 408K and 408L , Mathematics 408N and 408S ,  Mathematics 408C and 408D , or Mathematics 403K and 403L , or the equivalent
  • A grade point average of at least 3.00 on transferable college credit

Because of enrollment restrictions dictated by the availability of faculty and facilities in the school and by the limitations on nonresident enrollment imposed by the Board of Regents, an applicant may be denied admission to the McCombs School even though he or she meets University transfer requirements. Such an applicant may seek admission to another academic program at the University.
