Vampire Writing Prompts—Over 15 Ideas That Are Sure To Give A Fright

  • July 24, 2022

Are you looking for ideas for your next scary story? Are you a fan of the vampire horror genre and want to create your own blood-sucking characters ?

If so, you’re in the right place.

Below we’ve included a list of over 15 vampire-themed ideas for short stories (or longer stories if you like!)

Vampire writing prompts and story ideas

We all grew up with vampire stories. From classic vampire novel Dracula to modern YA series Twilight , vampires are some of the most popular monsters in literature.

Given our exposure to vampire fiction, we can easily make up a few vampire stories.

The rules are changeable – some vampires can’t go out in the light, while others need more than a stake to the heart to die.

When writing your own story, you can make up your own rules. It’s wise to use known, common vampire traits such as thirst for human blood or immortality. Again, this is your story, and you create any kind of vampire you like.

Vampire Writing Prompts

Vampire writing prompts

  • A retired vampire hunter picks up the stake once again when a pack of vampires begins to terrorize local high school students. Write about the vampire hunter’s background, their last hunt before retirement, and the connection between that last hunt and the current vampire culprits.
  • Write a vampire’s recount of his life so far, covering the periods of history he saw and his influence on them politically and socially.
  • In this world, vampires dominate. The few humans on the planet hide in fear, but they must leave their hideout and seek food every few days. Write a short story from the perspective of one of the remaining humans about living in hiding and the risks of going out to look for food.
  • Write a story about a world in which humans and vampires must learn to live in harmony.
  • A police detective is assigned to investigate a series of murders. Each victim has two punctured holes in their neck, but the case has been at a standstill for months. The detective is the vampire.
  • A man is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Fearing death, he seeks a vampire to stay alive.
  • A family man gets bitten by a vampire. He experiences all the symptoms – fangs grow, he has thirst for blood, aversion to sunlight, and immortality. Write a story about this man’s attempts to maintain his normal life while living with vampirism.
  • In a world where most people are vampires, write a story from the perspective of one of the last remaining humans.

Vampire story ideas

Look no further if you’re looking for inspiration for a new vampire story.

Below we’ve got some simple but engaging story ideas to help you craft your own vampire story. Feel free to chop and change any details of these story ideas to suit your writing style and imagination better.

Combine elements of different stories if you like, or see one through to the end.

Vampire Writing Prompts, plot twist

Closing time

A fellow barman at a cocktail bar works until 6 am. When closing time comes and the sun starts to rise, he’s always in a rush to get out and get home. One day, he gets delayed and doesn’t make it out before sunrise. He can’t leave, but the bar needs to close.

Stuck and needing help, he reveals his secret to you – he can’t go out in the sun because he’s a vampire.

Vampires are real, but they no longer hunt humans (most of the time). To keep a low profile in their communities, vampires in this world only eat animals. A hunt begins when one vampire is overcome with greed and goes on a bloody rampage, draining the blood of many of the local farmers’ animals.

The farmers and townspeople set out on a hunt for the mysterious beast killing their livestock. Will the real killer manage to lure a few humans from the pack?

Seven strangers are invited to a beautiful island mansion. The invitation does not inform them of the sender, but they go anyway. The butlers and maids show each guest to their rooms. That evening, all guests are invited to dinner. At the head of the table sits the host and an old, gray-haired man with a smirk.

A human-vampire romantic relationship is tested when the human gets fatally injured in a street fight. The vampire can save the human, but only by turning him into a vampire so he can live forever. Write a story about the conversation between these two lovers as time runs out and the only options are death or vampirism.

Gartrell is a vampire, but he doesn’t drink human blood. In this world, vampires are not known for drinking blood but for draining consciousness from a person through their minds. These vampires are telepathic and can make a person reveal their innermost secrets and traumas by looking at them intently. Eventually, the person loses memory and passes out.

What do the vampires in this world gain from consuming others’ memories?

Vampire Writing Prompts, when the vampire is the main character

A teenage boy has vampire fantasies from reading too much vampire lore. He wants to be a vampire, to the pain of his parents, who must tell him repeatedly that vampires are not real. One dark evening, the boy meets an eclectically dressed man on a walk home from school.

The man informs him that he is a vampire and knows what the boy wants. He offers to bring the boy on that night’s hunt to introduce him to the world of vampirism. On the hunt, the boy learns just how gruesome and brutal vampires are and tries to make his escape.

What happens to the boy?

The most elite members of society seek to maintain their status by achieving immortality. Large sums of money are offered to the Vampire Counsel to turn these elites into creatures of the night, granting them immortality, immunity to disease, and incredible strength. Soon, the blood-sucking elite exerts their dominance over the laypeople. The new vampires rule the world and call for a blood tax.

An older vampire reflects on his life so far and sees the error of his ways. He wants to make amends for the death and pain he has caused in his life. He stumbles across an abandoned baby in the woods and decides to care for it. He does the best he can, but the vampire hunters in the area don’t know about his wish for repentance and intend to kill him.

Write about this old vampire’s attempts to change his ways while avoiding being hunted and persecuted.

Vampire writing tips

When writing about vampires, it’s best to avoid heavy use of cliché.

Of course, you’ll need to incorporate the classic themes – blood-sucking, turning a human into a vampire, and an effective method of killing vampires – but you can still create an original piece with these considerations.

Don’t focus on the shock value of a vampire. We’re well versed in vampire literature, and their concept is no longer scary. Instead, focus more on your vampire as a character with a background rather than solely a vampire.

Giving the vampire(s) in your story a vivid life is essential. Being a vampire comes with challenges – no longer having a normal life, out-living all of your loved ones, and having to kill or turn people to feed.

Incorporate your character’s struggles, weaknesses, and desires to enrich them and make your story more engaging for the reader.

If you’ve got a favorite vampire story, feel free to take inspiration from that story when it comes to writing your own .

The vampire horror genre is broad, and countless vampire stories exist, so you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Be inspired by the stories you heard and read growing up, but don’t be afraid to offer your creative input.

  • A vampire works as a bartender at a cocktail bar for vampires—meaning the base for all the drinks is blood.
  • A renowned vampire hunter is turned during one of their hunts. Do they continue hunting vampires for revenge, or do they have a change of heart now that they can relate to the struggles?

  • A newly turned vampire develops a lisp after their new fangs grow in. Ashamed of this, they practice speaking when home alone, and avoid speaking at all when out in public.
  • A vampire unknowingly drinks from an intoxicated person, and becomes intoxicated themself!
  • Create a new kind of vampire. How are they different from traditional depictions of vampires, and how are they similar? Keep the primary conventions of vampirism (such as having to leech off humans to survive), but make things a bit more interesting!
  • You always assumed all vampires would automatically gain a good fashion sense and a flawless memory. As it turns out, that’s not the case, as evidenced by your many decades of dressing like a slob and never being able to recall what you had for lunch yesterday. You haven’t even bothered to learn any new skills in that time either. You can’t help but feel a bit embarrassed and intimidated when you attend vampire gatherings.
  • There has been a vampire sighting in a nearby town. You and a few other amateur vampire hunters flock to the area for fun, but are soon in over your heads when you come face to face with a real vampire.
  • As it turns out, vampires make excellent nurses.
  • Rather than drinking blood, some vampires are sustained by the thoughts, memories, and energy of those around them. One vampire consumes the nightmares of their lover with PTSD.
  • A coven of witches have managed to make themselves immortal, but it requires drinking human blood regularly to work. To supply themselves with blood, they regularly abduct humans to sacrifice.
  • Have an old vampire recounting the truth of a particular historical period, from the perspective of what life was like being a monster at that time. (For tips on researching a historical period, you can check out The 10 Best Ways to Research for a Story! )
  • Rather than having large fangs, vampires have a long, sharp, proboscis-like tongue for drinking blood. Aside from that one feature, it is impossible to tell the difference between a vampire and a human.

Vampire Story Prompts

  • Your main character has been falsely accused of being a vampire. Now, they have to hide from both vampires and human vampire hunters, while trying to make a case to prove that they aren’t the monster people think they are.
  • Vampires are real, but they aren’t much of a threat. The real threat is the ruling political party, which has been accusing political opponents of vampirism to have them executed for years now. They are able to stay in power by capitalizing on the public’s overwhelming fear of vampires.
  • A rookie vampire hunter is taken on a hunting mission with some more experienced vampire hunters. However, when it is revealed that the “menacing vampire” they came to kill was just a small child, the rookie has second thoughts. They are unable to stop their comrades from killing the child, but the experience inspires them to switch sides and advocate for the rights of vampires.
  • Many different types of vampires coexist within the same world. Some are averse to garlic and the sun, some have super strength or speed, some are strictly nocturnal while others don’t mind being out during the day. Some need to drink frequently, while others only need a pick-me-up every now and then. Some resemble undead monsters, while others are classy and charismatic. Some can even turn into bats. When two different types of vampires have a kid together, the results can be… unpredictable.
  • It didn’t take long for society to realize that vampires are just the superior life form. They’re powerful, immune to disease, can live forever, and look good doing it. Soon, everyone wanted to be a vampire. The rich and powerful in society started paying vampires to turn them, while those who couldn’t afford it were forced to stay mortal. Now, several centuries later, the ruling vampires are still alive, and charging the humans a monthly blood tax in exchange for being allowed to live.
  • Half vampires, known as “dhampirs,” are not immortal, not strong, and still reliant on human blood to stay alive. Essentially, they get all the drawbacks and none of the positives of being a vampire. The only way for dhampirs to become true vampires is if their vampire parent turns them. If any other vampire tries to do it, it won’t work. Two dhampir siblings embark on a mission to find their estranged vampire parent, so they can finally become true vampires.
  • An elder vampire ends up caring for a human child. They want to give the kid the best possible life: a chance to go to a good school, a social life, extracurricular activities, and much more. However, they have to try to provide all of this while staying out of sight, lest a vampire hunter finds them and tries to hurt them.
  • Almost everyone is a vampire now. An alternative was found for human blood, so humans are not required to sustain vampires. However, many rich vampires still believe human blood is a luxury and a delicacy. The few humans that are still alive are kept on a farm, where their blood is routinely harvested throughout their lives to make a profit. The protagonist is a human who has grown up on one of these farms, and is determined to make a change.
  • Before burial, it is customary to remove the heart of the deceased and burn it, to ensure they don’t return as a vampire. One family who just lost their daughter doesn’t like the idea of mutilating her body, and buries her privately to keep it a secret from the authorities. Three nights later, her body is gone, and only a small trench of loose soil remains where she used to be. The family must now hunt down the monster they created before she can hurt anyone, and before the townspeople realize what they’ve done. (This plot also works well with zombies. Writing About Vampires

Vampires have a long history of being used in fiction. From the ancient folklore vampires who could remove their heads to the classic tale of Dracula and the infamous Twilight series, vampires have been the uncrowned king of monsters for some time—and this trend doesn’t seem to be dying off any time soon. Vampires continue to evolve with each new story that comes out, so even though it may seem like every story about vampires has already been told a million times, there will always be room for innovation.

Have fun with these, writers!

3. Perfectly Chilling Atmosphere: Crafting Spooky Settings for Your Vampire Stories

Every great vampire story needs a haunting setting that sends shivers down your readers’ spines. Building a chilling atmosphere is crucial to create an immersive experience that will keep your audience on the edge of their seats. Here, we’ll explore some effective techniques to craft spooky settings that will bring your vampire tales to life.

To create an eerie ambiance, start by focusing on the details. Describe the decaying, century-old mansions with their cracked walls and cobweb-filled corners. Make use of dark and vivid language to paint a picture of shadows dancing ominously on the walls and cold drafts whispering through empty hallways. Consider incorporating abandoned graveyards, where looming tombstones reach for the sky, carving a nightmarish landscape. Captivate your readers by using all their senses – describe the musty odor of old books, the faint sound of footsteps echoing in empty rooms, and the bone-chilling touch of icy mist that lingers in the air. By vividly portraying these details, you’ll submerge your audience into a perfectly chilling atmosphere they won’t be able to escape.

  • Play with lighting: Use moonlit nights or flickering candles to create dramatic contrasts between light and shadow.
  • Set the weather: Stormy nights, heavy fog, or perpetual rain can intensify the sense of mystery and foreboding.
  • Utilize symbolism: Incorporate eerie objects like antique mirrors or paintings that seem to observe your characters’ every move.

By employing techniques like these, you’ll create a world where the supernatural and the human collide, immersing your readers in a spooky setting that will captivate their imaginations long after they’ve closed your book.

4. Sinking Fangs into Characters: Bring Your Vampires to Life with Deep Personalities

4. Sinking Fangs into Characters: Bring Your Vampires to Life with Deep Personalities

Creating memorable and compelling vampire characters is essential for a captivating story. While their supernatural traits are intriguing, it’s their deep personalities that truly bring them to life. Here are some tips to sink your fangs into character development and craft vampires that will mesmerize readers!

Uncover the roots of your vampires by exploring their origin stories. Craft a unique history for each character that explains their transformation into an eternal creature of the night. Did they encounter betrayal or lost love? Perhaps an unexpected twist of fate led them to embrace their newfound powers. By delving into their past, you’ll add depth that makes your vampires more relatable, evoking empathy or fear from your readers.

Give your vampires complex motivations and internal conflicts. Are they driven by revenge, the thirst for power, or the yearning for redemption? Allow their desires to clash, pitting their vampire instincts against their remaining shreds of humanity. This internal struggle will create fascinating character dynamics, making your vampires multi-dimensional and engaging.

By infusing your vampire characters with rich histories and multi-layered motivations, you can ensure that they transcend the stereotypical tropes often associated with these creatures of the night. Whether they’re embracing the darkness or fighting against it, these deeply developed characters will captivate readers, leaving them thirsting for more.

In the realm of vampire narratives, there exists a captivating subgenre known as “Dark Romance and Forbidden Desires.” This genre, characterized by its intense emotional connections and enticingly dangerous relationships, adds a unique twist to vampire stories. Whether you’re a writer looking to spice up your narrative or a reader fascinated by the allure of forbidden love, exploring this trope can bring a whole new level of depth to your storytelling.

So, how can you infuse your vampire narratives with a dash of dark romance? Here are some key elements to consider:

  • Complex and morally ambiguous characters: To create a captivating dark romance, your characters should have multifaceted personalities and conflicting desires. By blurring the lines between good and evil, you’ll add depth and complexity to their relationships.
  • Chemistry and tension: Building up a compelling and forbidden romance requires a delicate balance of chemistry and tension between characters. Play with the push and pull of their desires and the primal attraction that stems from their supernatural nature.
  • Power dynamics and forbidden love: Explore the forbidden aspect of the relationship by emphasizing power dynamics. This can involve differences in age, social status, or even supernatural abilities. A power imbalance can heighten the tension and inject an extra dose of excitement into the narrative.

Remember, when incorporating dark romance and forbidden desires into your vampire narratives, it’s crucial to handle these themes with sensitivity and respect. By skillfully weaving together passionate connections and forbidden love, you can create a story that will keep readers enthralled until the very last page.

When it comes to vampire plotlines, creating a sense of suspense and tension is crucial to keeping readers on the edge of their seats. By incorporating bloodthirsty conflict, you can intensify the narrative and immerse your audience into a thrilling vampire world. Here are some key elements to consider when generating suspense and tension in your vampire plotlines:

  • Power Struggles: Introduce power struggles among vampire factions or between vampires and other supernatural beings. These conflicts can add a layer of unpredictability to the story, as characters constantly vie for dominance and control.
  • Personal Vendettas: Dive into the personal histories of your vampires and develop vendettas that drive their actions. Whether seeking revenge for past betrayals or engaging in age-old rivalries, these personal vendettas create a web of intense conflict and heighten the stakes.

The world of vampire literature and films has captivated audiences for decades, evolving from classic tales to modern interpretations that continue to inspire and enthrall. From Bram Stoker’s iconic “Dracula” to contemporary novels like “Twilight,” the genre has embraced various themes and tropes, providing a vast pool of inspiration for artists, writers, and filmmakers alike.

When exploring the rich realm of vampire literature and films, one can draw inspiration from a myriad of elements:

  • Character Archetypes: Dive into the complexities of vampire characters, from the seductive and brooding to the monstrous and terrifying.
  • Setting: Immerse yourself in settings that range from Gothic castles to gritty urban landscapes, setting the stage for the immortal undead.
  • Symbolism: Uncover the symbolic meanings behind vampire mythology, such as immortality, bloodlust, and the eternal struggle between dark and light.

Moreover, modern renditions have infused vampire legends with new life, often exploring themes beyond the supernatural:

  • Love and Romance: Discover how vampire literature and films have fervently explored forbidden romances and eternal love.
  • Social Commentary: Analyze how these stories serve as metaphors for societal issues, delving into themes of power, otherness, and addiction.
  • Identity and Metaphysics: Delve into the existential questions posed by vampire narratives, questioning what it means to be human, immortal, and to exist in a world separate from society.

Writing vampire narratives can be an exhilarating endeavor, allowing you to explore the mesmerizing allure and dark depths of these immortal creatures. • Build an Intriguing Vampire Society: Develop a rich and intricate vampire society alongside your characters. Consider their social structure, unique traditions, and hidden rituals. Vampire Romance

Now that we’ve seen some out-of-the-box vampire romance writing prompts, let’s dive deeper into the genre!

Vampire romance is a branch of the paranormal romance subgenre, made famous by release of  Twilight in 2005 by Stephanie Meyer. Since its release, the series have gained immense popularity and commercial success around the world.

Why are we fascinated by vampires, you ask?

Reader’s fascination with vampires lies partly in the portrayal of these supernatural beings as enigmatic and suave characters. The idea that a fantastic, enigmatic and gorgeous otherworldly being can fall madly in love with a regular, plain human creates a delightful escape for readers who  identifies  themselves with the protagonist.

To truly fall into the “romance” genre, the narrative must conclude in either a happy-for-now ending, or a happily-ever-after ending. This is also often the case with vampire romance stories, or else, readers who expect “romance” might feel “betrayed”. Within this genre, narratives may carry a dark undertone. However, by attributing redeeming qualities to the vampire characters, a justified happy ending—whether happy-for-now or happily-ever-after —can be woven into the tale.

Story Ideas: Vampires Taking Over the World

by Brandon Cornett | February 13, 2020

Fight for Humanity

Most popular articles for January 2024:

  • Post-apocalyptic scenarios and story ideas
  • Zombie apocalypse story ideas
  • How to write a good science fiction novel

This is part of an ongoing series that offers story ideas and prompts for writers of speculative fiction. In a previous blog post , I offered some ideas for writing a sci-fi horror novel by blending elements from those genres.

Today, we’ll talk about another story idea that has vast potential … vampires taking over the world.

Vampires Taking Over the World: A Novel Approach

Vampire novels and short stories go way back. In literature, the concept of vampirism dates back to the 1800s, and possibly further. But we really haven’t seen that many stories where vampires take over the world, in a full-on vampiric apocalypse.

Scary vampire face

In Stephen King’s ‘Salem’s Lot , the night-fearing bloodsuckers attempt to take over a small corner of a small town in Maine. In the Sookie Stackhouse novels (which spawned the popular True Blood HBO series), they inhabit a small town in Louisiana and other enclaves.

But vampires taking over the world? We have’t seen much of that in novels or movies. Until Justin Cronin came along…

Cronin didn’t pioneer the idea of a vampire takeover. Other writers have explored the concept before him. But he did something unique by taking classic elements from the post-apocalyptic fiction genre and merging them with vampires.

writing prompts vampire

He also gave his “virals” superhuman physical capabilities, which is truly terrifying.

Cronin’s trilogy of novels ( The Passage , The Twelve , and the City of Mirrors ) were built around the concept of vampires taking over the world. No spoilers there; you can get that much from the book jackets.

In these books, he created a future world where vampires and humans battle for dominance. It’s an epic tale that pulls us into a new world full of dangers we can only imagine.

I would recommend these books to anyone who enjoys post-apocalyptic and/or vampire fiction. They are well written and populated by memorable characters.

Despite Cronin’s triumphant addition to this hybrid genre, there is still room for other writers to innovate. Unexplored territory remains. So, if you’re planning to write a novel where vampires take over the world, I would say go for it.

In the meantime, here are some ideas and writing prompts to get your creative juices flowing…

Bending the ‘Rules’ of the Genre

The first thing to know is that vampires are malleable. You can shape them in a way that supports the kind of story you want to tell. And they’ve changed a lot over the centuries.

In Bram Stoker’s Dracula , published in 1897, the vampire-in-chief was a Transylvanian noble who could function in polite society (while spreading the undead curse at the same time).

In Justin Cronin’s The Passage , published 113 years after Stoker’s seminal work, the vampire minions are animalistic in nature. They can leap from the treetops to attack their human prey. They are fast and strong and terrifying. But the original “twelve” vampires — the bosses, if you will — behave like generals controlling an army.

Cronin took some of the old “rules” and added a fresh twist of his own. He started along the trail blazed by the founders of vampire fiction, while blazing one of his own. That’s one of the great things about speculative fiction. You can speculate!

And you could do the same. As a horror or fantasy writer, you could take the basic concept of a vampire (a once-human creature that preys upon those who are still human), and shape it as you see fit. As long as you’re clear and consistent about it, readers will go along for the ride.

5 Vampire Story Ideas & Writing Prompts

Do you have a post-apocalyptic vampire novel in mind? Looking for ways to breathe new life into the genre? Here are some writing prompts and ideas for your next vampire story.

Idea #1: Vampire dystopia

As the ultimate apex predator, vampires dominate the planet. They keep us alive but enslaved, to serve as their food. They farm and cultivate us. That’s the status quo when the story starts. Thankfully, our intrepid heroes are determined to smash that status quo, restoring humanity to its rightful place in the world. But can they pull it off?

Idea #2: Vampire apocalypse

Readers will always be interested in post-apocalyptic fiction . It’s in our nature to wonder what life would be like, post civilization. So, why not create a vampire apocalypse story?

In Cormac McCarthy’s The Road , characters struggle to survive on a scorched planet, while avoiding lawless bands of marauders at the same time. The biggest threat to their survival is not starvation or exposure, but other people.

Now, imagine if the survivors of a post-apocalyptic event had to defend themselves from other humans (as in The Road ) along with the existential threat of a vampire race. A sci-fi or horror writer could create multiple levels of conflict with a story idea like this. Handled properly, it could make for one helluva good read.

Idea #3: Vampire military fiction

Here we have vampires versus humans, in an ongoing battle for survival and dominance. What if you followed a group of recruits through a kind of basic training? What would their “boot camp” look like, given the enemy is a bloodsucking night prowler?

In 2007 Max Brooks wrote World War Z , a collection of firsthand accounts about the great Zombie War. I think it’s high time someone wrote a “World War V” type of story, about the great Vampire War. I’d buy it!

Idea #4: Vampire science fiction

As readers, we tend to think of vampires as being fantasy or horror, and science fiction as being … well, science fiction. Two different genres, and never the twain shall meet. Right? Wrong. There are endless possibilities for a vampire sci-fi novel, countless ways to innovate with the genre.

Here’s but one example: A vampire-like virus emerges on an isolated colony on Mars (think Salem’s Lot meets The Martian ). Or maybe it erupts on a generation ship somewhere in the far reaches of space. Or maybe time travel is involved.

There are endless avenues to explore with this vampire story idea. What can you come up with?

Idea #5: The vampire resurrection

The last member of a vampire race is found frozen in the ice of Antarctica, along with ancient scrolls that tell of their deeds. Two people race to recover the body. One is a scientist who understands and fears the dangers of what lies frozen in the ice. The other is a madman hellbent on resurrecting it. Vampiric chaos ensues.

What Do You Think?

These are just a few ideas for writing the vampire apocalypse / post-apocalyptic story. What thoughts do you have on the subject? Have you read a great novel that falls into this category and should be mentioned here? Let me know by leaving a comment in the box below. I look forward to hearing from you.

Free Character Writing Prompts #9: Vampires

Here are 10 bloodcurdling  character writing prompts  focusing on vampires! While I was a major fan of horror movies growing up, vampires never really interested me all that much. I laughed at them when they were portrayed in cartoons or other mediums because they seemed like such ridiculous characters: turning into a bat or a puff of smoke at a moment's notice. When I saw the pilot episode of Joss Whedon's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," my entire concept of what a vampire could be completely changed. While Whedon's advances for the character type have been somewhat bastardized by book series' like Twilight, we now know that a vampire can be a creature with or without a soul who may have a human past influenced by multiple cultures. This potential allows a vampire to come from many different backgrounds with the possibility for many types of desires.  Free Character Writing Prompts #9: Vampires

1. About six weeks ago, on a walk down the wrong alley, he was turned into vampire on the way back from a high school field trip. He'd never been the most popular kids, but he had never been a laughing stock like he was on the trip when his swimming trunks fell completely off in the beach in front of over 100 students. Where he had previously been upset, now he was angry and ready to get revenge on those who mocked him. His parents worried when he moved to the basement and began carrying what seemed like body bags around, but he'd always been a straight A student, so there had to be some explanation, right? Describe his attempts to get revenge and what happens after he exacts it.

2. When he grew up in the early 1800s, he knew that he wanted to protect people from thieves, murderers and other criminals. He was starting to work his way up when he was attacked and turned by a vampire. He had learned from stories that they were heartless, soulless and purely evil, but aside from never aging and having the hunger for blood, he felt exactly the same. He continued on for nearly a decade in his position before people got suspicious. He faked his own death and continued elsewhere. He continues the practice to this very day, keeping his hunger at bay with a nearby butcher shop and fighting to ensure the safety of humanity from human and not so human dangers. What has it been like for him, starting over every so often and never being able to show his true self?

3. She thought that it would be cool becoming a vampire and she asked a client to turn her one day after they had sex in lieu of paying her. While she felt vibrant and powerful, she still needed to pay the bills and continued in her line of work. She didn't tell that many people about her change but they knew just by looking at her and they gave her some distance. In fact, several of her best clients were now afraid of her, as much as they tried to convince her otherwise. She was beautiful and in the prime of her life and she believed that freezing herself like that was the best course of action. Now she wished that she could reconsider. What is the next step for her and will she need to change her line of work?

4. She had come to terms with her death at the ripe old age of 87. Now she was 187 because her grandson, who she was very fond of, had become a vampire and turned everybody in his family, simply to keep them around forever. She had always preached the importance of family and she definitely appreciated the gesture. Turning into a vampire had given her a boost of strength and energy she hadn't enjoyed for years, though it was pretty strange that she glimmered in the sunlight. She had a wild sense of humor and loved telling jokes to her family during their yearly reunions. She felt blessed getting a chance to live an entire extra lifetime after believing she wasn't long for this world. Will she continue to live out her days for another hundred years and why?

5. The doctors at the very alternative clinic hoped that turning him into a vampire would restore the use of his legs. He had been a very highly recruited quarterback for his state-champion football team before a tackle gone wrong left him paralyzed from the waist down. After vampires were revealed to the world a few years ago, many diseases had been essentially cured by turning the victim into an immortal. The procedure didn't work. His days of being the most popular, fastest running, best-looking kid in school was over and he was bummed out. Now he felt like even more of an outcast. What will this former pretty boy quarterback do to make his life enjoyable again now that he's an immortal vampire?

6. He was a count before it was cool to be a count. When he told people that he was a vampire from Transylvania, they simply laughed at him, before he absolutely whooped their butts. Long before people knew about vampires and wanted to become them, he was sneaking around Europe as one of the first stalkers of the night. Over time his powers had accrued and he knew that no vampire along could touch him. Despite that, he felt like he was having a midlife crisis and wondered if it was even worth being immortal when so many others were walking around just like him. He missed the peace and quiet of the night and knowing he was special. How will this aged vampire begin to feel whole again during his "midlife" crisis?

7. She provided a very important service to the vampire community that few humans knew about. While it seems that most people are turned into blood-thirsty creatures during their teens and twenties, there are actually some children who are never able to advance beyond their early age because of their immortality. As a result, she decided to create a night care center for vampire parents to look after the children. It can be tough taking care of a group of powerful, fanged kids for an entire evening, but she is proud to bring her skills during her human life into her vampire life. She smiles more than most nighttime creatures and has a special gift beyond simple siring with the young ones. How did she become a vampire herself and what is a night for her like with all the vampire kiddies?

8. In her first week of being a vampire, she was extremely excited to use her powers and to drain the blood of attractive male humans. The only problem was that she tended to underestimate her strength. The first man she brought back to her apartment was so much more gorgeous than anyone she'd ever been with during her life and when she pulled him close to her, she accidentally ripped out his neck and spine. She was more gentle with the next guy, but after tying him up to her bed, she pulled him a bit too hard and snapped his arms off. This was getting to be ridiculous, she thought as she was spending more time cleaning up than eating. During her life she had been a good problem solver and she thought long and hard about her ordeal. She decided that she would have to practice being gentle with humans and to do so would mean not eating them for little while. How do her attempts at keeping her snacks from breaking apart go for her?

9. While most are excited to become vampires, he had a promising future as a professional football player and he asked around to see if there was someway to remove the curse of vampirism. He heard of an ancient monk living deep within the Himalayans who might be able to return vampires back into humans. He knew that he was strong, but he took a few friends with him just to make sure he didn't end up frozen at the top of a mountain. Throughout the trip, his friends tried to convince him to remain a vampire, even threatening that they'd turn him right back or kill him after reaching the destination. He wondered if it was possible that living forever might be more enjoyable than living the high life for a short period of time. What decision does he end up making and is the ancient monk able to reverse his condition?

10. It's tough being a suburban housewife to a family of vampires, especially when you can't get any chores done during the day. Her son was the first to be turned and slowly but surely he turned the rest of the family. It wasn't easy at first to explain everything away to the neighbors, claiming they had longer hours and that they sent the kids to a far-off private school during the day. Shopping had to be done at 24-hour grocery stores and it was nearly impossible to find a maid who the kids wouldn't try to snack on when nobody was looking. She had always wanted to be a devoted wife and mother and if that meant keeping a few secrets and killing a few snoopers, these were just consequences of achieving her goal. Will she be successful at keeping her family secret, especially when the four of them never age past their current appearances?  Done with Writing Prompts about Vampires? Do you feel like writing a vampire story, but don’t know where to start? Then look no further! In this post, we’ll go over several vampire story ideas and give you the information you need to get started. Whether you’re an experienced writer or just starting out, these tips will help you write a vampire novel or short story that readers won’t be able to put down. Have fun with your writing!

Why Vampire Story Ideas Are So Compelling

Since Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, the notion of vampires has been one of the most important horror and thriller tropes. The central characters of Count Dracula, the most famous vampire in literary history, and Jonathan Harker entered the lexicon.

The movies were not slow to catch up, with the 1922 film Nosferatu remaining iconic to this day.

In recent years, vampire fiction has seen a resurgence with books like Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series and films like The Lost Boys and Blade .

One of the things that makes the vampire myth and vampire stories so compelling is that they can be set in a variety of different time periods and locations.

For example, you could tell a story set in modern times, with vampires having to adapt to the 21st-century world, or you could tell a historical vampire story set in Victorian England. You could even write a science fiction vampire story set in outer space or in a completely imaginary world.

Another aspect that makes vampire stories so interesting is the different powers and abilities that vampires can have. Some vampires can fly, some can turn into bats or wolves, and some can even control the weather. There are also various weaknesses that vampires have, such as not being able to enter a house unless invited or being destroyed by sunlight.

Then, of course, there is the fundamental fear and mysticism associated with human blood and the idea that it would be food for other creatures. One of the reasons why rabies is so frightening to many.

How to Start Brainstorming for Your Vampire Story

A good way to start brainstorming for your vampire story is to think of a time period and location for your story, and then think about what kind of vampire you want your main character to be. Should it be an all-powerful vampire lord or a young, inexperienced vampire who’s just learning about his abilities?

Another way to start brainstorming for your vampire book would be to come up with a really good premise or twist for your story. For example, you could write a story where the vampires are actually the good guys and are fighting a group of humans who want to destroy them.

Or you could write a story where the vampires are trying to find a cure for their condition and are fighting other vampires who want to make them immortal.

Whatever twist you choose, make sure it’s something that will really surprise your readers and keep them hooked.

What Makes a Good Vampire Story

A good vampire story is one that’s well written, has elements of horror and the supernatural, and isn’t too cliché.

A story that sticks to the traditional vampire stereotype might have a vampire who lives in a dark castle, wears black clothes, has long, pale hair, and isn’t very interesting.

However, a story that contains elements of horror and the supernatural consists of elements of the vampire’s struggle against his condition, such as trying to resist the urge to murder for blood or the urge to sleep in his coffin during the day, and elements of the horror genre, such as violence, horror, and fear.

There are many different elements that can go into a vampire story, such as mythology, lore, and legends, but it’s important to keep these things in moderation.

For example, if you’re planning a vampire story set in ancient Rome, you don’t want your vampire to have a Japanese name like “Akira” and tattoos on his neck!

A good story will make readers question their knowledge of vampires and maybe even question their own existence.

Another important aspect of a good vampire story is having the right protagonist. For example, the protagonist of your story could be an evil vampire who only wants to feed on humans and fights some vampire hunters.

Another possibility would be a protagonist who fights his hunger for human blood but has a good heart and doesn’t want to hurt humans. Or you could have a protagonist who fights both humans and other vampires who want to kill him.

Questions to Ask Yourself When Creating Your Vampire Characters

  • Who’s your main character?
  • What kind of vampire is she?
  • What’s her main motivation or goal?
  • What do they look like?
  • What’re their strengths and weaknesses?
  • Are there other characters in your story that are important to the plot ?
  • What kind of relationship does your character have with the other characters in your story?

Create Memorable Characters

One of the most important aspects of writing a good vampire story is to create good, memorable characters.

When writing your characters, you need to make sure they’re interesting, have good personalities, and have weaknesses.

Good weaknesses make your characters more interesting and can help make the story more exciting.

How to Describe a Vampire in a Story

When writing a vampire story, it’s important to make your vampires interesting and unique. One way to do that is to describe them well.

A compelling vampire character description is one where the vampire’s drives are unmistakable and you can’t escape them. This is a core aspect of vampire mythology.

The hunger for blood should be all-consuming, and the need for human flesh should be a constant craving.

The vampire could be pale and have dark circles under his eyes, and his teeth are usually sharp and deadly.

Their nails could be long and sharp and their eyes red or black. They should be described as fast, strong, and agile. Usually, they’re also described as seductive, alluring, and hypnotic.

What’re the Differences Between a Demon and a Vampire?

The main difference between a vampire and a demon is that vampires are undead creatures that feed on humans, while demons are spiritual beings that feed on negative energy.

Both vampires and demons are immortal, but vampires are created when a human is bitten, while demons are created when a human is infused with negative energy.

Demons are supernatural beings controlled by their master, while vampires are supernatural beings controlled by their thirst for human blood.

Many demons have the same powers as vampires, such as flying and shape-shifting, and the same weaknesses, such as sunlight and holy water, and can even be considered a type of vampire.

Another difference between vampires and demons is that demons usually possess a person, while vampires are physical beings.

Vampires are usually immortal, while demons aren’t. Demons can usually only travel through shadows or darkness, while vampires can travel anywhere.

Vampire Story Ideas for You to Use

Some ideas for your vampire tale might be:

Story Idea #1: A Young Woman Who’s Turned Into a Vampire Against Her Will and Must Come to Terms With Her New Identity

A young woman, who’s just discovering her powers, is excited about the new possibilities. She can fly, transform into a bat or a wolf, and even control the weather. But she’s also aware of the dangers that come with being a vampire.

She knows that she must be careful not to reveal her abilities to humans, or she’d risk being discovered and destroyed.

Despite these dangers, the young woman is determined to explore her abilities and learn more about what it means to be a vampire. She’s excited about what she can do with her new powers and looks forward to discovering everything she’s capable of.

She’s determined to make the most of her new situation and become the powerful vampire lord she knows she can be.

Story Idea #2: A Group of Vampires Trying to Survive in a World That’s Slowly Becoming Uninhabitable for Them

As the years pass, the world becomes more and more hostile to vampires. The sun’s rays become more harmful, silver becomes more deadly, and garlic becomes more effective in warding them off. Fewer and fewer people become vampires, and those that do often don’t survive long.

The remaining group of vampires is determined to find a way to survive. They search for a place where they can live in safety and in secret, away from the dangers of the outside world. They find an old abandoned castle that seems to be the perfect refuge for them.

But as they begin to settle into their new home, they discover that they aren’t the only ones hiding in the castle. There are other creatures there who’re just as desperate to hide from the outside world. And not all of them are friendly.

Story Idea #3: A Detective Investigating a Series of Murders That May Have Been Committed by a Vampire

The victims all have strange puncture wounds on their necks and all seem to have been killed in a very specific way. The murders all have characteristics of vampire killings, but there’s one thing that makes him believe that not everything is as it seems.

As he investigates further, the detective realizes that there might be more to the murders than meets the eye. He theorizes that the killer may not be a vampire at all, but something even more dangerous.

The closer he gets to the truth, the clearer it becomes to the detective that he may be in over his head. But he’s determined to solve the case, even if it means putting himself in danger.

Table of Contents

From family feuds to secret societies, these prompts will get your creative juices flowing! So grab a pen and paper (or laptop) and let's dive into some thrilling vampire romance stories!

1. Two Houses, Both Alike in Dignity

writing prompts vampire

In a world of secrets, lies, and forbidden love, two best friends — one vampire, one human — must navigate the impossible: falling in love while trying to protect each other from the war between their families.

But it gets worse: if their families don't make peace, an ancient stone could crack, plunging all existence into disaster. With the looming threat of eternal darkness on their heels and time running out, can they find the courage to take a chance and break free?

2. The Enemy of My Enemy

writing prompts vampire

Two unlikely allies must team up to fight an unknown evil lurking in the shadows.

One is a vampire hunter, driven by her sworn duty to rid the earth of these undead creatures.

The second is an ancient vampire, attuned to a new threat that threatens all the living and undead.

The evil has been sleeping for ten thousand years, but it's awake. And hungry.

Will they overcome their differences and defeat the great evil? If they do, they'll have to learn, and un-learn, many truths. And they'll have to decide if this intense attraction could lead to something deeper, or if it's a fire that will burn them both up.

3. Secrets of the Vampire

writing prompts vampire

A young vampire, desperate to escape the confines of her family's secret society, takes a chance and steps into the outside world – only to meet an unexpected ally: a priest who knows of her family's crimes and wishes to help her escape. They embark on a journey together, exploring the mysteries of love, trust, and self-discovery. How will they escape her family's far-reaching connections to the elite? And how will they survive when they realize they're in love?

4. Monster's Ball

Two unlikely lovers are thrown together at a masquerade ball. Their connection is instant, electric, and undeniable. But when the man reveals his vampire fangs, his Cinderella runs off, leaving behind one tantalizing clue to her real identity: a bat pin that fell from her handbag. How will this Prince Charming use this single clue to find his fated mate? And how will he convince her that immortality really is all it's cracked up to be?

5. Another Bloody Love Story

Two vampires, who hate each other, are forced to share a car for an infernal road trip across America. Their goal? To find an ancient artifact that could bring them unimaginable power. But if this artifact gets into the hands of their mutual sworn enemy, he could bring destruction to the entire world.

With a long history of mutual distrust and hatred, these two must learn to find common ground as they attempt to unlock the secrets of their shared past. Will love prevail over their long-standing grudges? Or will old wounds keep them from finding true happiness?

6. Who Wants to Live Forever?

Mid-range shot of two young women facing the camera. One is white with short blonde hair and is looking at the camera. The other is black with dreadlocks and is looking off-camera. Both are wearing urban streetwear, i.e. jackets and hoodies with graphic tees.

Armed with new identities and immortal self-confidence, they get their photos in magazines, star in movies and fashion shows, and attend lavish parties and red-carpet events filled with celebs. But danger lurks around the corner in the form of Mavko, the most famous vampire gangster ever–and the heroine's real father. When their story starts to unravel, will they be able to find a way out alive?

There are a couple of ways you could go with this prompt. You could have the two half-vamps fall in love with each other, or you could have love interests for them: the scion of a business empire, and another former street kid who's made it big behind the scenes (and knows who they are).

7. Night is My Friend

A young woman turns up undead in the morgue, but there's something wrong with her. She doesn't have the normal vampire DNA profile, nor does she have human blood. She doesn't remember who turned her, or anything from her last day alive. And when she's cornered by a vampire hunter one night, something primal wakens in her, which comes out of her and rips the hunter to shreds…

Enter the hero, a supernatural detective determined to find this new killer creature. Victim after victim appears in the city, all with similar symptoms. With the first victim's help, he's determined to find out who's wreaking havoc across the city. But when the killings continue, they must race to uncover the truth. Will they find out who turned her and why, or will the hunter's dark intentions catch up to them first?

8. Bring Me to Life

A young vampire hunter, driven by her relentless quest to rid the world of evil, finds herself face-to-face with a powerful vampire. Overcome by his power and mysterious allure, she loses the battle and becomes a vampire herself.

After waking up as one of the undead, she discovers that not everyone is a fan of her presence. The other vampire hunters want her dead. With nowhere else to turn, she rushes into a notorious vampire's lair, pleading for protection. And he agrees to protect her…for a price.

The price is simple: marry me. Join my family, and I will defend you with my life. But as feelings start to blossom between them, the ex-hunter finds herself torn between her old beliefs and her new realities.

9. A Dark Hope

writing prompts vampire

Our heroine works at a dive bar for supernatural beings. Nothing phases her anymore, not even the gorgeous vamp who just walked in, telling a tall tale about a magical artifact that could save the unicorns from extinction.

When a powerful organization catches wind of the vamp's story and puts a bounty on his head, she must choose between saving him and staying safe. With enemies at every turn, they race against time to find the artifact while trying to deny their growing feelings for each other.

10. My Best Friend, the Vampire

In this story, vampires coexist with humans, and it mostly works, most of the time. Some vampires take medicine that makes them able to withstand the sunlight for about an hour a day. That's how our hero came to befriend our heroine, a girl next door with a collection of sun-sensitive plants that need special care.

It's not until their friendship grows closer and they start to rely on each other more and more that the hero must decide whether or not to reveal his true identity. When an old enemy of his shows up in town he must decide between protecting his friend and protecting his secret. As he decides, his feelings for her only start to grow stronger…

11. You've Seen Too Many Movies

After turning on a notorious immortal mobster, our heroine is given a new identity: a bakery shop owner in a sleepy little town. The town is lovely, even if it is a little mysterious. Why does the school have no children? Why is there still a video rental store right in the center of town, even though she's never seen anyone in it?

Unnerved, our heroine takes to renting movies from the store. But these aren't movies she's ever heard of. And whatever happens in the movies seems to come true in the town. So when she switches to romances, can she trust the new man who seems determined to sweep her off her feet? And if not, whom can she trust?

Caught in the middle of a war she doesn't understand, our heroine is fighting for her life when she finds an unexpected ally. When the story ends, she'll know she doesn't have to run and hide.

There are many different ways to go with this idea. You can make it creepy and eerie, like Stephen King. You could also make it a cosmic horror story with elements of True Detective. You could make everyone in the story a vampire, so the story takes place entirely at night. And you could introduce her love interest from the beginning, so he comes in on a “white horse” to rescue her after she gets a message to him (at great risk to herself).

13. Bela Lugosi is Alive and Well and Smiling on Celluloid

Our heroine runs a movie theatre that mostly plays old horror movies like Nosferatu and Dracula. She's a half-vampire who inherited this place from her dad, who died when he accidentally staked himself on a fence post. She has no idea what she wants to do with her life, so for now she's doing this.

She's so different from the type A werewolf who comes in to save the company from bankruptcy that they butt heads from the first moment they're together. But an undeniable mutual attraction brings them closer than they ever thought possible…

Through their fights and love, our heroine discovers her true purpose. With the help of her vampire co-workers and her werewolf love interest, she finds a way to embrace who she is as a half-vampire while also finding a way to make it work in the human world.

The great thing about this prompt is the theme of finding oneself and accepting who you are. It's a classic story with a unique twist, plus all the potential for some great vampire and werewolf action.

How to Write a Compelling Vampire Romance

Digital painting of a man and woman looking at the camera, lit from the side by orange light. The woman has black curly hair in an updo, the man is wearing a suit.the woman's outfit can't be seen.

Writing a compelling vampire romance is no easy feat. It requires a unique blend of horror, intrigue, mystery, and of course romance.

To write an unforgettable tale, you must create believable characters who are caught in an interesting plot with plenty of suspense and unexpected twists. Here are some tips to help you craft a captivating vampire romance:

  • Establish the Rules. When writing a vampire romance, you must tell the reader the character's powers and limitations of your vampires. Can these vampires go out in the sun? Do they have magical powers, like super-sight or super-speed? How do they react when they see or smell blood? How do they react to other supernatural creatures, like witches and werewolves? The setting will influence the rules, as well: for example, if your story is set in the Victorian Era, your characters will have different rules from someone in a more contemporary setting.
  • Establish the Reasons. Why can't these characters be together now? What's stopping them, internally or externally? A romance where the characters get together on page one, and stay together throughout the story, is not what most readers want. They want tension and conflict to make the declaration of love that much sweeter.
  •  Start with the midpoint. The midpoint is when everything changes. In the Wizard of Oz, it's when Dorothy and her friends come out of the woods and see the Emerald City. In many romances, it's where the hero and heroine kiss, make love, or realize their feelings for the first time. Figure out what goes in the middle of the story, and the rest of the story will be much easier to write.

These vampire romance writing prompts will help you create memorable stories about forbidden love, secrets, and the dark power of immortality. Have fun with your story and let your imagination take flight!

Writing is a craft that requires practice and dedication. If you want to hone your writing skills, there are numerous resources available to you. You can find more writing prompts here, as well as guides on how to write short stories, poetry, novel outlines, and much more.

Meet short story editors

Perfect your story for submission with help from an experienced editor.

Creative Writing Prompts

When the idea to start a weekly newsletter with writing inspiration first came to us, we decided that we wanted to do more than provide people with topics to write about. We wanted to try and help authors form a regular writing habit and also give them a place to proudly display their work. So we started the weekly Creative Writing Prompts newsletter. Since then, Prompts has grown to a community of more than 450,000 authors, complete with its own literary magazine, Prompted .

Here's how our contest works: every Friday, we send out a newsletter containing five creative writing prompts. Each week, the story ideas center around a different theme. Authors then have one week — until the following Friday — to submit a short story based on one of our prompts. A winner is picked each week to win $250 and is highlighted on our Reedsy Prompts page.

Interested in participating in our short story contest? Sign up here for more information! Or you can check out our full Terms of Use and our FAQ page .

After you find the perfect story idea

Finding inspiration is just one piece of the puzzle. Next, you need to refine your craft skills — and then display them to the world. We've worked hard to create resources that help you do just that! Check them out:

Beyond creative writing prompts: how to build a writing routine

While writing prompts are a great tactic to spark your creative sessions, a writer generally needs a couple more tools in their toolbelt when it comes to developing a rock-solid writing routine . To that end, here are a few more additional tips for incorporating your craft into your everyday life.

  • NNWT. Or, as book coach Kevin Johns calls it , “Non-Negotiable Writing Time.” This time should be scheduled into your routine, whether that’s once a day or once a week. Treat it as a serious commitment, and don’t schedule anything else during your NNWT unless it’s absolutely necessary.
  • Set word count goals. And make them realistic! Don’t start out with lofty goals you’re unlikely to achieve. Give some thought to how many words you think you can write a week, and start there. If you find you’re hitting your weekly or daily goals easily, keep upping the stakes as your craft time becomes more ingrained in your routine.
  • Talk to friends and family about the project you’re working on. Doing so means that those close to you are likely to check in about the status of your piece — which in turn keeps you more accountable.

Arm yourself against writer’s block. Writer’s block will inevitably come, no matter how much story ideas initially inspire you. So it’s best to be prepared with tips and tricks you can use to keep yourself on track before the block hits. You can find 20 solid tips here — including how to establish a relationship with your inner critic and apps that can help you defeat procrastination or lack of motivation.
