HBO's Task Starring Mark Ruffalo Takes Over South Philly for Filming

HBO is rolling out the upcoming crime drama “Task” in full swing in the Philadelphia location. There’s talk of a filming location done at Ralph’s Italian Restaurant in South Philly.

The series’ story revolves around an FBI agent, played by Ruffalo , who focuses on stopping robberies of drug houses and other criminal activities.

The latest work is based on the neighborhoods of Philadelphia , like Easttown Mare , with screenwriter Brad Ingelsby.

The series cast includes Ruffalo , who received an Oscar nomination for Poor Things , and the series also stars Om Pelphrey, Emilia Jones, Thuso Mbedu, and others.

Gleaners Café posted on his Instagram Story to announce Ralph’s as the filming location.

However, the production started on Tuesday and will continue till 10 pm. The film was produced on Wednesday in various streets of the Italian market.

The showrunners have invited actors from Philadelphia to contribute to the project and use nearby locations.

In an interview with Deadline in January, Ruffalo says, “I didn’t think I could do it. Being the wrong person on screen, breaking whatever expectations.

“At some point, those two might run into each other. That’s what they’re saying. It’s not set, nothing’s set.”

Previously, it was under production and will start filming in Aston Township next week.

Added: “It’s such a flashy part, and I had never really dug my teeth into anything like that — and man, was it freeing and liberating and just joyfully wicked!”

On February 6, Heery Loftus, a Philly-based agency, posted about “Casting For Task.”

A follow-up to ‘Mare of Easttown’ is filming in Delco

“Task” stars Mark Ruffalo as the “complicated” head of an investigation unit.

Kate Winslet as Mare Sheehan in HBO's "Mare of Easttown."

Mare of Easttown fans, rejoice.

While Kate Winslet has cast doubt on a return of Delco’s favorite homicide detective , the creator behind the Emmy-winning HBO limited series is revisiting the Philadelphia suburbs to shoot a follow-up crime show.

The series, Task, is filming in Ridley Township over the weekend, according to an official in the Delaware County community.

The entertainment outlet Variety reported last year that Task comes from Mare creator Brad Ingelsby, a Berwyn-raised screenwriter and producer. Ingelsby signed a three-year deal with HBO after Mare’s breakout success in 2021.

Mark Ruffalo will have a leading role in Task , according to Variety , and South Philadelphia native Jeremiah Zagar is directing.

The series follows a “a task force of law enforcement officers and the criminals they are trying to apprehend,” the outlet reported. The Poor Things star told Deadline in January that he plays a “complicated” good guy who heads an investigation unit.

“He’s badly damaged but fighting for good,” Ruffalo told Deadline .

Task films through August, and the hunt for local talent is underway.

Jason Loftus, a casting director and partner with the Philadelphia-based Heery Loftus company, told The Inquirer that his agency is partnered with Task production to fill both speaking and background roles.

Heery Loftus cast over 80 roles on Mare, Loftus said. The agency’s credits include M. Knight Shyamalan’s A Knock at the Cabin, the Creed films, Silver Linings Playbook, and more .

Casting calls posted on Heery Loftus’ Instagram show that Task producers are looking to fill a variety of paid roles; those include a set of twins, members of the Dominican community, and a real-life courtroom sketch artist.

Philadelphia — and Pennsylvania in general — has grown into a popular destination for film and television productions in part thanks to the state’s generous tax incentives, according to Loftus. Pennsylvania offers productions up to a 30% tax credit on in-state expenditures, including essentials such as car rentals and materials for set building.

Loftus added that the Philadelphia region is particularly attractive for its architecture, diversity, and varied geography.

“We can look like New York if you’re in Center City, then you go a couple miles into our suburbs, and you could be on a farm,” Loftus said.

Joseph Ryan, Ridley’s manager, said Task’ s production was “good for the township.” Filming for Mare occurred near Ridley, but outside of the township’s limits, he said.

Loftus didn’t confirm where else Task would shoot, mentioning that too many bystanders gathering near set can hinder production.

“[With] some of the people that are in it, they try to be a little incognito,” Loftus said.

Could viewers get a return of Winslet’s Mare?

It’s possible, according to Ruffalo.

“At some point those two might run into each other in the future, that’s what they’re saying,” the actor told Deadline of his and Winslet’s characters . “ It’s not set, nothing’s set.”

Mark Ruffalo’s Latest HBO Series ‘Task’ Could Feature A ‘Mare Of Easttown’ Crossover…? (Probably Not)

Nina Braca

The Philadelphia Extended Universe features a lot of great shows, like It’s Always Sunny, Abbott Elementary, and every M. Night Shyamalan project ever. And Mark Ruffalo is heading to the city of Brotherly Love in his upcoming series Task.

Ruffalo will star as a “complicated” good guy FBI agent in the upcoming series Task from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby and Jeremiah Zagarand. Of his character, Ruffalo told Deadline that he’s “badly damaged but fighting for good.” This can be said about most Philadelphia residents and sports teams.

The Poor Things actor also jokes that Task is in the “same universe” as Mare Of Eastown, which means that he could receive a visit from everyone’s favorite Wawa enthusiast, Philadelphia Detective Mare Sheehan, Kate Winslet .

“At some point those two might run into each other in the future, that’s what they’re saying. It’s not set, nothing’s set,” he adds, presumably joking. But you really never know with the guy .

Could Kate Winslet pick up the vape once again? It seems unlikely. The actress has been open about how hard the character was for her. “I can’t just go, ‘Oh yes, let’s just do it again.‘ It’s a colossal, colossal commitment and did really take a huge amount out of me. And I know it would do that again, it would have to, if I was going to give people what they want and ultimately deserve, to see out of Mare Sheehan. You never know.” For now, we will have to settle for hearing Ruffalo’s Philly accent.

Mark Ruffalo’s Task: Behind the Scenes of the New Film in Philadelphia

The television series “Task,” which stars Mark Ruffalo, will start filming in September. The main setting for the HBO series, which centres on a specialised task force of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the criminals the same is attempting to apprehend, will be Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although the identity of Ruffalo’s role is currently unknown, we may anticipate that he will portray an important member of the task force who works for the FBI. Despite the fact that the series’ production is set to begin in September, the present SAG-AFTRA strike may cause a delay.

Before the WGA strike, the series’ script was written, and Ruffalo joined the cast. ‘Task’ was written by Brad Ingelsby, who is best known for developing and penning the Emmy Award-winning HBO crime series ‘Mare of Easttown.’ The creation of the series is a component of Ingelsby’s overall contract with HBO. Other works by the screenwriter include “Out of the Furnace,” “Run All Night,” “American Woman,” “Our Friend,” and “The Way Back.” ‘Echo Valley,’ a forthcoming movie starring Julianne Moore, Sydney Sweeney, and Domhnall Gleeson, was also written by him.

After receiving the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his depiction of Dominick and Thomas Birdsey in the network’s drama series “I Know This Much Is True,” Ruffalo agreed to join the cast of the show. Bruce Banner/Hulk appeared in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Louis Reed appeared in The Adam Project, Bruce Banner/Hulk appeared in What If…?, Rob Bilott appeared in Dark Waters, and so forth. He recently wrapped up production on the Netflix adaptation of Anthony Doerr’s acclaimed book “All the Light We Cannot See,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” which stars Emma Stone, and Bong Joon-ho’s “Mickey 17,” which stars Robert Pattinson.

“We are beyond excited to work with Brad Ingelsby, the wonderful author behind Mare of Easttown, once more. In a statement, Francesca Orsi, EVP Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said, “Brad’s unlimited inventiveness and unmatched ability to capture audiences is nothing short of inspirational, and we cannot be more delighted to embark on another journey together. We all leaped at the chance to work with Mark on another series when the chance to see him infuse amazing humanity into a fresh role arrived, Orsi continued.

Jeremiah Zagar, known for helming Adam Sandler’s “Hustle” and the coming-of-age movie “We the Animals,” is the series’ director. ‘Annenberg Space for Photography,’ ‘The Fix,’ ‘7 Deadly Sins,’ etc. are only a few of his other accomplishments. Along with Paul Lee and Mark Roybal of wiip, the series is executive produced by Ruffalo, Ingelsby, and Zagar. Co-executive producers are Jeremy Yaches and Nicole Jordan-Webber.

The Task (Movie Review)

Angelo's rating: ★ director: alex orwell | release date: 2010.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane. It was the year 2000 and I had just celebrated my fourteenth birthday. I was an awkward nerd starting my Freshman year of High School and thanks to the crippling amount of stress that comes with being a socially awkward dork in a High School filled with jocks and preps, often found myself unable to sleep at night. In my quest to find something worth watching on TV at that hour, I stumbled across a ton of awful television. Letterman and Leno were both garbage, I hadn’t yet developed my love for basketball, so the the late night West Coast basketball games meant nothing to me and the only syndicated drama at the time was that awful “VIP” show with Pam Anderson. While you would think a show that was basically a vehicle for Pam Anderson’s cleavage was designed for insomnia-ridden teenage boys, my favorite late night television show was something completely different. When I couldn’t sleep, I’d venture on over to MTV, because there was a pretty decent chance that “Fear” would be on.

The premise of “Fear” was pretty straight-forward. Take a group of your typical MTV Spring-Breakers and lock them in an abandoned, “haunted” prison, hospital or hotel and film them as they completed various tasks which tested their bravado. While the premise of the show was almost always guaranteed to disappoint as these teens would obviously never encounter a ghost, the show was fairly entertaining. It was pretty enjoyable watching these people absolutely flip out as they had to sit in a decommissioned electric chair while MTV producers banged on pipes a few rooms over and some of the hand-held camera work of these unlit, decrepit and abandoned structures were legitimately pretty creepy. Of course, there was the awful theme song done by Godsmack, but we can overlook that. The next film in After Dark’s Original series, “The Task”, wears it’s inspiration on it’s sleeve. For the most part, this film is a lost episode of “Fear”, bookended by a horror film. Problem is, unlike “Fear”, there’s absolutely nothing enjoyable about watching it.

The problem with “The Task” is glaringly obvious almost immediately, the characters are generic caricatures of your typical reality show contestants and horror film tropes that are completely incapable of inspiring any feelings or emotions within the viewer. Whereas “Fear” succeeded by being an intensely intimate show, getting you up close and (sometimes quite literally) right in the face of a real person experiencing true, abject fear, the characters here are simply incapable of acting out the most basic emotions, yet alone something as primal and real as true terror. From the moment you’re introduced to them, you type them and mentally draw out their whole “character arc” in your head, which keeps you from ever getting anything out of them in the moment. You’ve got your borderline offensive, sorta homophobically portrayed flamboyantly gay dude who will probably die after the stoic, token black guy but before the the know-it-all, sassy Asian girl who will be survived by the final girl and possibly her love interest, who might die in an attempt to spare her life or might not, but you won’t care because he’s kind of a douche-bag and you don’t really like him. Take the human element out of it, and this formula is a dud.

The other glaring problem is that the cinematography simply fails to instill that same sense of unease that the original show did. What made “Fear” work was the limited perspective the cameras allowed the viewer. Either we were seeing a POV shot from the person being followed, or were seeing the “Blair Witch Project” style head-on shot. Either way, we were never able to get a full sense of the surroundings and had blind spots. Given that the camera was being plunged into a legitimately creepy, old building in the pitch dark, the effect was actually pretty tense and un-nerving. Here? We get a leftover set from one of the later “Saw” sequels and an omniscient camera that foreshadows and highlights every little jump scare in the film. The end result is a generic straight-to-DVD horror film that looks and feels exactly like every other straight-to-DVD horror film.

And of course, sense this is a straight-to-DVD horror film made in a year that starts with the number two, there has to be the twist ending. It doesn’t matter if the film really even needs a twist (it doesn’t), but of course, it just has to be there. In principle, I tend to hate twist endings unless it’s really clever or comes as a legitimate surprise. This one does neither. It’s pretty telegraphed, so it doesn’t really come as a shock. Even more annoying is that there’s almost immediately another twist, which puts the film back where it was before the first one occurred. While I suppose a double-twist ending can work (“The Last Exorcism”), it’s especially stupid here as the second twist negates the first. Why not just have a coherent story instead of a dumb fake-out that kills what little tension this film can build over the course of an hour and twenty minutes?

“The Task” is an all-around forgettable film. It doesn’t do anything right, yet alone well, and is eclipsed even by other flawed films. Something like “Session 9”, while still having problems of it’s own, makes up for those deficiencies by absolutely nailing the feel and vibe that this film was going for. In a world where Netflix’s streaming selection is becoming increasingly crowded with these straight-to-DVD horror releases, it does absolutely nothing to separate itself from the crowd or earn even the most tenuous of recommendations. The filmmakers should have taken a lesson from VH1 when they came up with their own blatant ripoff of “Fear”, “The Celebrity Paranormal Project” and thrown Gary Busey in this. I’d watch that. No Busey though? No dice.

i own this on dvd because it came in a bundle so i checked its imdb page which says there's a scene where "a girl's clit gets ripped off with an old saw blade". i know that doesn't sound very appealing but i really did not believe that this garbage flop ass horror would dare to have a full on gore vagina scene like that so i decided to check. it is in fact not in the movie, i don't know whether there's multiple versions or some sick fuck just had a field day making shit up on imdb but either way i'm glad i did not have to witness that ❤

i watched this as i watered and fed all my plants and honestly it may have got a higher rating bc i was having a nice time and vibing pretending i am a cottagecore girl even though i am literally a bitter 32 years old woman.

i quite like the premise here and the crew watching them gave me a sense of scream and halloween h20 but i would have liked more stupid shit to establish them as fame hungry reality tv stars.

a funny thing (to me and probably no one else) was i recognised the guy with the david beckham-early-00s-faux-mohawk and after looking him up it’s because he played the boy sidekick in tim burtons sleepy hollow and i got a good chuckle over my brain retaining some sort of recognition for that minuscule detail and yet i can’t remember anything to benefit or improve my life in any way.

My 2016 October Horror List (aka Why I'm Extremely Pale in October) Movie #39

I don't know if anyone remembers a show on MTV from the early 2000's called FEAR...or I guess more precisely, MTV's Fear. It was a reality show where a group of kids are dropped off at a supposedly haunted location to stay the night and then one by one they're sent out into the dark, scary building to complete some task like standing in a dark room for 10 minutes or wrap themselves up in a straight jacket alone in the dark, etc. The kids (early 20's--Jeez I'm old!) would freak out, occasionally I would get creeped out. It was a pretty fun show!

Going in I kinda expected a found footage film, sadly it isn't one. The creature on the poster can only be seen for maybe 20 seconds and it's just a mask. I won't go into too much detail because that's really not necessary, ill just say that "The Task" sucks big time. The characters are the most annoying, stupid and worst stereotypes and clichés, the dialogues are horrible and sometimes don't even make sense, the film looks bad, is badly directed, badly acted, badly paced, boring, terribly written and in the end comes with a twist that doesn't deserve the title twist. In addition, one can see the worst case of playing death ever, she didn't even bother not to breathe extremely heavy and obvisous. "The Task" has neither low budget charme nor trash appeal and is just a badly made film that thinks it is smarter than it is.

A group of stereotypes agree to spend the night in an abandoned prison for a reality tv game show, and as they go inside the token gay character says "I haven't been this scared since I came out of the closet."

It's not enough that this film is horribly written, horribly edited, horribly directed, horribly acted and horribly photographed, it has to be horribly offensive too.

As Jonathan L. Scott faces retirement from the Navy, he recalls twenty-seven years earlier when he was a Navy pilot stationed in San Diego: The first aircraft carrier in 1921 is a converted collier, the Langley . Because the Navy does not have the money to purchase airplanes especially designed to land on carriers, several pilots die as they attempt to land on the sixty-five foot deck. One day, Scott must tell Mary Morgan that her husband Jerry has been killed. In 1923, Scott is transferred to Washington, D.C. to help develop a carrier plane and to convince the admirals to support naval aviation. At a party he encounters Mary, who is there with another officer. Scott becomes involved in an argument with powerful isolationist newspaper publisher Bentley and thus greatly angers Admiral Ames. Scott is then assigned to a desk job at the Panama Canal. Before he leaves, Scott proposes to Mary, who refuses to marry another flyer, but advises him to continue his fight for the carrier planes. When a newly designed carrier, the Saratoga , is launched, Scott is transferred to it. Learning to fly with a new system, Scott loses control of his plane and crashes. While he is recovering, Mary visits the hospital and accepts Scott's second proposal. The couple spends two years in Hawaii and then moves to Annapolis, where Scott, now a Lieutenant Commander, is to teach naval aviation. His outspoken stand in favor of aircraft carriers in combat causes him to lose a promotion, and after Japan invades Manchuria, Scott decides to accept a civilian job selling planes in Europe. Mary, however, encourages him to remain in the Navy, and they return to Hawaii, where Scott is made a commander. When Pearl Harbor is attacked by the Japanese, Scott's ship, the Enterprise , sets out to prove the worth of the carrier. During the Battle of Midway, the flight deck is badly damaged by Japanese torpedo planes, and they are forced to abandon ship. Afterward, Scott is made a Captain and travels to Washington to plead for more carriers. Eventually a carrier fleet is produced, and Scott is placed in charge of one of the ships. During the Battle of Okinawa, the fleet proves its worth, and four years after the end of the war, Scott retires and joins Mary, who is waiting for him on the dock.

Delmer Daves's onscreen credit reads: "Written and directed by." The film ends with the following written acknowledgment: "To the United States Navy for its aid and cooperation in making this picture possible our grateful thanks." A press release indicates that Warner Bros. had begun to work on the idea for this film as early as May 1945. According to a news item in June 29, 1948 Los Angeles Times , Robert Montgomery was to star in the film. The item adds that the studio had obtained Technicolor shots of the last six months of the Pacific war.        A October 17, 1948 New York Times article reports that director Delmer Daves and producer Jerry Wald found original black and white footage of the Langley , shot in 1923 at the silent speed of 16 frames per second. Similar footage was discovered of the Saratoga , an intermediate stage in the development of the aircraft carrier. By optical processes the old film was adjusted to the sound speed of 24 frames per second. In order to incorporate this footage, Wald decided to shoot the first half of the film in black and white and switch to color with the scenes of the Enterprise at Pearl Harbor. World War II footage includes shots of the Battle of Midway, the Japanese attack on the Yorktown and kamikaze damage to the Franklin . The article also names Patricia Neal as a member of the cast, but she did not appear in the completed film.

  7. Recensissimo: Tusk
