## Factorising into single brackets: TES Maths Resource of the Week

To see all of the work I do for TES Maths, including Resource of the Week, Inspect the Spec, Pedagogy Place, Maths Newsletters and Topic Collections, please visit the TES Maths Blog here

What is it? Over the years I have struggled to get my students thinking hard when it comes to factorising into single brackets. Sure, I can make the expressions more and more complicated, but essentially the thought process my students require to solve any question I give them is the same. And that is potentially problematic because, as Professor Robert Coe says, learning happens when students think hard.

Step forward this fantastic resource inspired by the work of Don Steward; students must insert algebraic expressions into the grid so that each column and row multiplies to give the expression at the end. Sounds simple but the clever design of the questions means that students need to think really hard about factors that are common to multiple expressions in order to find the unique arrangement that works.

How can it be used? This is an ideal problem solving activity to present to students after they have mastered the basics of factorising into single brackets. It is here that they can put their skills to the test, combining them with logical reasoning and deduction. Such an activity might be well suited to paired work, with the usual provision that it is important all students have the opportunity to engage and reap the benefits from thinking hard.

Thanks for sharing! Craig Barton

## Factorising at a glance

Factorising is the inverse of expanding brackets. It involves rewriting an expression so that it becomes the product of two (or more) terms in brackets.

The topic begins with factorising binomials (polynomials with 2 terms) into a single bracket using common factors. This involves skills such as comparing the coefficients of the two terms and considering their highest common factor (hcf). The highest common factor may be a number, a variable (a letter) or both. Both terms may have indices, so an understanding of indices can be very useful.

The topic moves onto factorising trinomials (polynomials with 3 terms) such as quadratic expressions. This leads to rewriting the trinomial as a product of two factors, each with its own set of brackets. This is often referred to as factorising quadratics with double brackets. This can be done by looking at the constant term and finding its factor pairs and calculating which pair sum to make the coefficient of the x term. We can use factorising quadratics as a method for solving quadratic equations.

When a binomial expression involves a square term being subtracted from another square term, we can factorise it by using the difference of two squares method. This results in double brackets. Knowledge of square numbers is useful when factorising using this method.

Looking forward, students can progress with more factorising worksheets to additional algebra worksheets , for example a solving equations worksheet, simultaneous equations worksheet , or a rearranging equations worksheet.

## How Learning to Factorise Equations Benefits Students?

Factorising is a method for solving equations which is useful for GCSE students, more advanced students, and even professionals.

Factorising, as with many areas of algebra, can cause many students headaches. Learning how to expand brackets and factorise quadratics is an essential skill, and although students might complain that they will never need this information, what they don’t realise is that factorising is very important.

## Preparation for GCSE Maths and Further Study

Learning how to factorise expressions will help prepare students for their GCSE maths exams.

If students wish to study sciences after their GCSEs, they will need to know how to factorise. Using clearly presented maths worksheets will help familiarise students with the types of questions they will come across and enable them to feel confident when approaching factorising in GCSE maths or in their further studies.

## Use of Factorising in the Workplace

Those who work in the science or technology industries will use their algebra knowledge and factorising skills every day.

Within these industries, there are computer applications which solve equations and simplify expressions, but computer issues can occur, and in these cases staff will have to rely on the knowledge they learned in school. Students might not realise just how important factorising might be for them, so use engaging factorising worksheets to help them gain confidence using this method.

Shown below is an exam question in which factorisation is required.

Solve the equation 2x² + 7x – 15 = 0

Source: N5 Maths, Specimen, P1, Q4

Factorising is the opposite process of expanding brackets, for example:

- Expanding brackets would require 2 ( x + 1 ) to be written as 2 x + 2
- Factorisation would be to start with 2 x + 2 and to end up with 2 ( x + 1 ) .

You may be asked to factorise one of three different types shown below:

- Common Factor : 8 x – 14
- Difference of Two Squares : 9x² – 4y²
- Trinomials : x² – 6x + 9

Knowing the correct order in which to factorise is also essential. For example, the common factor (if one is present) must be removed prior to factorising the Difference of Two Squares or a Trinomial.

Just a thank you!

We’re using the advancedhighermaths.co.uk site and it is excellent. This has been a real help while our wonderful school teachers fight their way through lockdown tech nightmare. Later on today my younger daughter will be using the free national 5 maths website. Thanks so much.

Jennifer – Parent

Hello, I am writing to thank you for your wonderful website! I subscribed when I was studying for my National 5 exam (as an adult learner) and found it invaluable. I am delighted to have just discovered the huge amount of resources for younger learners too. My son who is in S2 will benefit from these, now and in future, as will my daughter when she moves up to S1 after summer. So just wanted to say thanks very much! Kind regards, Clare.

Hey, Just wanted to say thank you so much for this amazing resource! Last year I was expecting to scrape a B in my N5 exam if I was lucky, and after discovering this website and working through it over the past year, my teacher said she’ll be surprised if I don’t get an A1!!! So once again, thank you so much!!!

Thanks for this fantastic website you have here. So well laid out, easy to follow and as a parent trying to help their child with studying. Only £20 for the Study Pack has been excellent value considering that many tutors charge £40 an hour. I will be continuing with this for Higher Maths and also for my younger child to ensure they are keeping up with the course. The worked solutions are so clear and easy to follow and I just cannot thank you enough. Wish there was something similar for the science subjects.

I got an ‘A’ in my National 5 Maths Exam! I’m very pleased as I did it my first attempt. Your website content definitely helped clarify and consolidate my understanding of the subject.

Just had a look at the worked solutions for the 2018 N5 Math Past Paper – Calculator was absolutely fine, but some tricky questions in non-calculator part, particularly 19b. We found the non-calculator paper much harder than five previous past papers. Anyway hopefully she has achieved an ‘A’ Pass and we will definitely be using your excellent site for Higher Maths next term.

E-mailing you guys know that you are doing a great job compiling all these excellent resources, it has been a great help to me and probably many many others. It has allowed me to get a reassuring prelim mark and has given me confidence for the final exam ( tomorrow ). Thanks for all the help and keep up the good work.

Hello, I decided to write to you to thank you for this website, it has helped me incredibly and the amount of content you have is amazing. I was very happy to discover the many practice papers you have as I had began to run out of papers to do once completed all the SQA past papers. The checklists for the three different units is very helpful and I will definitely be taking these to school with me on the day of my exam to look over! Thank you again for being so helpful to us, it is greatly appreciated and I will be placing any success I have during the National 5 exam on this website due to the endless resources and help you have available. Thank you 🙂 Emily, Nat 5 Maths student.

It is a great help to us this site, my daughter scored 86% in her prelim after doing the last 5 years past papers

Hi there – we found your site an amazing help for nat 5 – in fact my son went from a C grade at prelim to an A for his nat 5 thanks to you. Thank you – the best £20 I’ve spent!

Ms McCallum

“My Dad and I have worked together through several topics and three Practice Past Papers. When I get stuck, the detailed worked solutions explain everything so clearly and even give alternative ways to find the correct answer – Thank you so much for producing this fantastic resource.”

Darcey, Secondary School Maths Student

“Just want to say what a fantastic resource this is.

An absolute godsend for my Nat 4 and Nat 5 classes.

Many thanks”.

Mr Wilson, Teacher of Mathematics, Edinburgh

“The website is great!! It is very easy to navigate through and it has helped me understand many of the topics I was previously struggling with.”

Dean, Secondary School Maths student

This resource is a GCSE Factors Affecting the Rate of Photosynthesis Activity Worksheet. It includes a set of questions and answers designed to enhance students’ understanding of the various factors that influence the rate of photosynthesis.

The worksheet guides students to:

- Match characteristics with the factors that affect photosynthesis, such as the amount of chlorophyll and light intensity.
- Understand how temperature and carbon dioxide concentration can impact plant photosynthesis.
- Analyse how plants adapt to low light conditions and what happens when enzymes are subjected to extreme temperatures.
- Consider the effects of increasing carbon dioxide concentration on the rate of photosynthesis and discuss the concept of limiting factors.
- Evaluate the point at which increasing a factor no longer affects the rate of photosynthesis, understanding the saturation point.

The included answer sheet allows students to check their own work and educators to assess student comprehension.

This resource is ideal for use in the classroom, as a homework exercise, or as a part of study materials for exams.
