Features All Great Retirement Communities Have

Once you reach retirement age, it’s time to start thinking about living arrangements for the coming years. Retirement communities aren’t just for people who need medical assistance. They’re for active seniors and may even offer jobs for seniors over 55. Look for these features that all great retirement communities have.

Recreational Programs and Activities

Many people are drawn to retirement communities because of the socialization opportunities they have. Recreational programs and activities help people explore new interests and connect with others who have similar interests. Look for 55-and-older communities that have a schedule of weekly gatherings, outings and activities for residents. Make sure the community includes a diverse array of activities that take different levels of mobility into account. There’s a good chance your mobility level will change as you get older.

Health and Wellness Programs

Many retirees remain fit and active well into their golden years. A lot of great 55 plus retirement communities take this into account and offer ways for residents to remain healthy and active. This means more than just providing access to a treadmill or a small gym. Look for group exercise classes like aerobics, tai chi and yoga tailored to meet the needs of residents at various fitness levels. As a bonus, look for communities that provide access to a nutritionist that can help residents make healthier food choices.

Transportation Assistance

Some people living in over 55 retirement communities have given up their driver’s licenses or don’t have access to transportation unless they rely on family members or public transportation. Having transportation means that the resident has independence. They can come and go as they please, and don’t have to wait for someone to take them where they need to go. Great retirement communities recognize this and provide transportation options to residents. This includes shuttle rides to the grocery store, a car service to doctors appointments and other outings.

Meal and Dining Options

Many seniors living on their own don’t get the nutrition needed to be healthy and strong. Some are unable to cook for themselves and others simply don’t want to. Great retirement communities have meal and dining options for residents. These come in many forms, including a cafeteria-style layout or a restaurant-style layout with waitstaff. Check over the dining options of a retirement community to see how many meals are available per day and what the food options are.

Access to Nursing and Rehabilitation Services

People moving into over 55 communities in Florida and other locations often have medical needs. While most retirement communities don’t have doctors on site to handle medical care, they do offer nursing and rehabilitation services. This ranges from managing medications, continuing rehabilitation after an injury or specializing in specific conditions like Alzheimer’s.
