Unclutter your space with desk organizers.

Discover how to transform your workspace into a haven of productivity and calm with the perfect desk organizers for your needs.

How can a desk organizer elevate your workspace?

A desk organizer is more than just a storage solution; it's the heartbeat of a well-kept workspace. The right paper organizer can turn a chaotic workspace into an oasis of productivity. It's all about creating a system where everything has its place, from pens and paper clips to important documents and gadgets. A tidy desk  isn't just about cleanliness; it's about efficiency. By having a designated spot for your essentials, you'll spend less time searching and more time doing.

What should you look for in desk storage solutions?

When considering desk storage, it's essential to assess both form and function. Look for paper organizers that offer a variety of compartments and drawers to suit different items. A good desk organizer should accommodate small stationery items while providing ample space for larger documents and tools. Also, consider the ease of access; you want to be able to reach your items without any hassle. The design should complement your workspace, contributing to an environment that's both aesthetically pleasing and conducive to your workflow.

Desk organizer tips for a tidier mind and space

A cluttered workspace  often leads to a cluttered mind. To avoid this, implement a few practical tips using your desk organizers. First, prioritize your items. Keep frequently used items within arm's reach and store rarely used items in less accessible areas. Use drawer dividers to keep small items from getting jumbled together. Label sections if it helps you remember where things go. Lastly, make it a habit to return items to their designated spots after use. This simple practice can save you precious time and maintain the serenity of your space.

How to Install a Toilet Paper Holder

Last Updated: March 19, 2024 References

This article was co-authored by Patrick Johns . Patrick Johns is a Home Improvement Specialist and the Owner of CatchAll Handyman Services. With more than 28 years of experience, he has worked on a variety of home improvement projects, such as carpentry, plumbing, and door and window installations in both commercial and residential properties. A toilet paper holder includes several parts: 2 roller holders, 2 metal brackets which hold the roller holders to the wall, 4 screws, 4 wall anchors, and 1 spring-loaded paper holder. The paper holder fits snugly between the 2 roller holders and supports a roll of toilet paper. To install a toilet paper holder, you’ll need to use the provided template to mark the location of the holder on the wall. Drill 4 holes (2 per bracket) and screw the brackets to the wall. Then attach the roller holders, and add toilet paper over the spring-loaded paper holder.

Quick Steps

  • Use the toilet paper holder template to mark the bracket placements.
  • Mark the placement of the screws on the wall that go inside the brackets.
  • Drill holes into the screw marks, drilling slightly less deep than the screw's length.
  • Screw the brackets into the holes.
  • Attach the roll holders on either side and secure them with screws.

Aligning the Toilet Paper Holder on the Wall

Step 1 Choose the installation point.

  • If you’re installing the holder on drywall, try to center it over a stud . If you’re unable to locate a suitable stud, you can insert wall anchors in the drywall before screwing the toilet paper holder in place.

Step 2 Measure the holder’s location with the included template.

  • If the template is not a separate piece of paper included with the toilet paper holder, it may be printed directly on the back of the box. [5] X Research source

Step 3 Measure the 4 screw locations of an installed holder before moving it.

  • Then, use these measurements to transfer the toilet paper holder to its new location. Replicating the measurements will ensure that the holder fits properly on the new wall.

Drilling Holes for the Bracket Screws

Step 1 Mark screw locations on the wall with a felt-tip marker.

  • Remove the bracket, and you’re ready to drill.

Step 2 Drill holes that are slightly smaller than the included screws.

  • To select the correct drill bit size, pick up one of the 4 screws included with the toilet paper holder, and compare it with small drill bits. Select a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the width of the screw.
  • Before you drill, check to make sure that you’re holding the drill perfectly straight both horizontally (left to right) and vertically (up and down). Crouch down so you can look straight at the drill if necessary.

Step 3 Drill larger holes and insert wall anchors for added stability.

  • If you’re installing the toilet paper holder on drywall (and can’t attach it to a stud), install wall screw anchors to prevent the toilet paper holder from ripping out of the drywall.
  • Plastic screw anchors are often included with new toilet paper holders. If not, you can purchase wall anchors at any local hardware store. They look like small plastic cones, and can be found in the hardware stores’ “Drywall” section.

Attaching the Toilet Paper Holder to the Wall

Step 1 Screw the brackets onto the wall.

  • If your toilet paper holder came with 6 screws, use the 4 matching bracket screws for this step.
  • Before screwing the brackets in, you’ll need to visually determine if the screws are Regular or Philips head.
  • You will also need to determine the correct size screwdriver to use for each screw. Estimate the best fit, and then try larger or smaller screwdrivers as necessary until you find the best fit.

Step 2 Hang each of the roller holders on the attached brackets.

  • Remember that the 1 ⁄ 2 inch (1.3 cm) circular indentations at the end of each roller holder (where the metal roller goes) need to both face inward.
  • If your toilet paper holder did not come with 2 set screws, you can skip the next step.

Step 3 Screw 1 set screw in the bottom of each roller holder.

  • As with the bracket screws, visually determine if the screws are Regular or Philips head before screwing them in. They’ll most likely be the same screw type and size as the bracket screws.

Step 4 Add toilet paper and the spring-loaded paper holder.

  • Your toilet paper holder is now installed and ready for use.

About This Article

Patrick Johns

To install a toilet paper holder, start by finding a spot that’s 8-10 inches in front of or beside the toilet, and about 26 inches off the floor. Then, use the template included with your holder to mark where the brackets and screws need to go. Next, drill holes for the screws, screw the brackets into the wall, and hang the roller holders on the brackets. Finally, put a roll of toilet paper on the spring-loaded paper holder and put it between the roller holders. For more tips, like how to install any set screws included with your holder, scroll down! Clear some space for more projects by building this wall-mounted paper dispenser

If you've got rolls of paper, give them a home with this space-saving project.

A wall-mounted paper roll holder attached to a wood-framed wall near a low ceiling in a workshop.

Wood glue is a wonderful thing, but it makes quite a mess if you get it all over your workbench. I like to lay masking paper down before I glue, but it’s a bit awkward to have the roll lying around the shop. To free up some space, I built a wall-mounted paper-hanger, and it’s a design you can modify to store wrapping paper, craft paper, or really any paper that comes on a roll. Now I can pull down a sheet whenever I need one.

Not only that, but I made it entirely out of scrap wood I had leftover from our ongoing garage addition. Because it’s a perfect use for random pieces of wood, you can use any material you have that’s close to the measurements listed below—it doesn’t have to be exact. It’s also built as a shop tool—no frills or nice designs—but there are plenty of ways to fancy it up if you so desire.

  • Time: 1 to 2 hours
  • Cost: $0 to $30
  • Difficulty: easy
  • 2 (8-to-10-inch-long) 2-by-10 boards
  • 1 ( ¾-inch-diameter) wooden dowel , at least 42 inches long
  • 2 (40-inch long) 1-by-4 (or 2-by-4) boards
  • 2 (40-inch long) ½-inch-wide-by-¼-inch-thick boards
  • 1½-inch wood screws
  • 2 cotter pins
  • Circular saw
  • Speed square
  • ⅞-inch Forstner bit
  • ⅛-inch drill bit
  • (Optional) hand saw

Because my workshop is mostly packed up while we build an addition, I primarily used a circular saw and drill for this project. Absolutely feel free to use a miter saw and/or table saw instead, but it’s good to remember that you can still build things with minimal tools.

How to build a wall-mounted paper roll holder

Projects photo

1. Cut the side boards to size. These side boards hold the dowel that the paper roll slides onto. I made mine out of 2-by-10 material, but scraps of ¾-inch plywood will work as well.  Using a circular saw, cut the boards down to equal dimensions. I cut my 2-by-10 material in half, which gave me two 8-by-9.5-inch rectangles.

2. Drill holes in the side boards to mount the dowel. Use a ⅞-inch Forstner bit to drill these holes—you want a little bit of play around the ¾-inch dowel so it slips in and out easily. Measure each hole’s location from the front-bottom corner of each side board.

For my roll, which is 6 inches in diameter, I went up 3.5 inches from the bottom, then 3.5 inches in from the front edge to keep it entirely within the frame of the holder. If you’re using a different sized roll, adjust the measurements accordingly.

A piece of wood for a DIY paper roll holder, with a mark on it for where a hole will need to be drilled to hold the dowel that holds the roll.

3. Cut the stretchers that connect the two side boards. The stretchers need to be long enough to leave enough room between the side boards for the paper roll to fit. You don’t want it to be a tight fit, so cut them long.

My roll, for example, is 36 inches long, and the side boards are each 1.5 inches thick, so the stretchers needed to be a minimum of 39 inches long. I cut my 1-by-4 boards to 40 inches to leave a half-inch of breathing room. A quarter-inch would’ve been fine, but any less might cause the frame to squeeze the roll and make it difficult to pull.

[Related: A woodworker’s guide for choosing the right saw for each cut ]

Mark the lengths of the cuts with the speed square, then cut them out with the circular saw.

  • Pro tip: After marking the cut line with your speed square, position your circular saw at that mark. Then put your speed square back on the board, flush with the edge and pressed against the saw plate. Use the speed square as a straightedge to get a perpendicular cut that doesn’t wobble.

A man in a workshop using a circular saw and a speed square to make a square cut on a small piece of wood.

4. Screw and glue the stretchers to the side boards. Pre-drill the screw holes to avoid splitting the ends of the wood. You’ll want to install one stretcher on the top of the side boards, pushed all the way to the front, and the second on the back of the side boards, pushed all the way to the top. This back board will double as a nailer strip when you hang the unit.

5. Cut the thin front boards that will hold the paper. Cutting boards this thin (40 inches long, ½ inches wide, and ¼ inch thick, in my case) with a circular saw is a little bit tricky to do well, because the vibration of the saw can cause small boards to bounce and vibrate.

One trick is to set your saw blade barely deeper than the thickness of the boards you want to cut, and then put the workpiece on top of some scrap wood rather than hanging off the edge of a work table. When you make the cut, the blade will score the board at the bottom, so make sure it’s not anything you treasure. But it will keep the thin board stable for a safer, cleaner cut.

Or you can do what I did, and cut them with a hand saw.

6. Install the front boards. The purpose of these two thin front boards is to let the paper slide between them. They’ll hold it in place, making it easier to position the sheet while you’re cutting. You can also pull and tear the paper against them if you aren’t particular about nice, clean lines.

Like the stretchers, glue and screw these two boards in place, pre-drilling to avoid cracks. Install one at the very bottom of the front of the unit, and the other about ⅛-inch above that, leaving a uniform space between.

7. Install a cotter pin into the end of the dowel. If the dowel is left unsecured, it’s likely to slide out of the holes as you turn the paper roll. Drill a ⅛-inch hole through the end of the dowel, perpendicular to the ground, and install a small cotter pin. This will keep it from pulling all the way through the holes. You can also use a lynch pin , but you’ll need to drill a larger hole. Likewise, you can use a small bolt and nut, but that will be a bit more time-consuming to remove.

A man drilling a small hole in the end of a dowel in a wall-mounted paper roll holder, to install a cotter pin so the dowel will stay in place.

8. Hang the paper roll holder. Locate the studs in your wall, using a stud finder if your shop walls are covered, and then pre-drill holes in the rear stretcher that match those stud locations.  Hang the project up with 1 ½-inch or longer screws.

9. Push the paper through the front boards. Once the paper roll is hung, push the paper through the small ⅛-inch gap you left between the two thin front boards. This will allow you to pull through only the amount you want.

I tried to make a cutter head with a razor blade that slides over the paper slot, but it only tore the paper. I couldn’t get an orientation or design that gave a clean cut. My recommendation is to keep a pair of scissors handy, or tear the paper along the edge of the wood.

What you won’t need handy are paper towels to clean up your glue mess when you’re done clamping projects. A clean project, in more ways than one.

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Toilet Paper Holder

Although the toilet paper holder is an often-overlooked bathroom feature, it’s one you’ll use on a daily basis, so it’s worth finding a suitable pick. Ease of use and style are among the top features to look for in your new roll holder. When choosing the best toilet paper holder for your bathroom, consider the holder type, material, size, and design.

Toilet paper holders are available in three common types: freestanding, wall mounted, and tank mounted. Freestanding toilet paper holders don’t require any installation and are the easiest to set up. They can arrive preassembled or require a handful of steps to put together, but there is no mounting step needed. A toilet paper stand will take up a bit of floor space, which may be a downside for cramped bathrooms.

Mounted holders install to a surface, like a bathroom wall or the side of a vanity or cabinet. Although they require an extra installation step, they are a popular option because they are compact, stylish, and convenient to use.

Tank-mounted holders attach to the side of a toilet tank for convenient and tucked-away storage. Installation is easy; most holders hook onto the top of the toilet tank. But since they hold the toilet paper roll behind you, they can be difficult to reach while using the toilet .

Toilet paper holders come in a range of materials and finishes to suit any bathroom style. Material options include plastic, wood, ceramic, and metals like aluminum and stainless steel. Some options combine materials for durability or aesthetics. These materials come in a variety of colors and finishes, including basic solid colors, modern brass or chrome finishes, and rustic natural wood finishes.

When it comes to bathroom fixtures, including toilet paper roll holders, you’ll want a durable pick that will last years or decades until you’re ready for a style upgrade. Look for holders from reputable brands or that use appropriately treated materials designed to withstand damp bathroom conditions.

Keep in mind that plastic tends to be the least durable material, and low-quality plastic materials can become brittle over time. Materials like wood and metal are most durable, and those with a rust- or corrosion-resistant finish will last longest in a bathroom.

Size and Capacity

Most toilet paper holders are made to hold a standard toilet paper roll, which will measure roughly 4 to 4.5 inches in diameter. Holder size can vary from larger freestanding units made to hold multiple rolls to compact wall-mounted versions made for tight bathrooms.

Freestanding roll holders are often the largest in size, and since they aren’t mounted, they do take up a bit of floor space. In small bathrooms, adding a freestanding holder can add to clutter if maintenance items like brushes and plungers are stored nearby. Their capacity can vary; some are made to hold a standard roll, while others have a wider design or a simple rod design that can fit any size roll.

Wall-mounted and tank-mounted holders tend to be small and compact, made to store toilet paper out of the way. Since they mount to a surface, they don’t take up any floor space. However, many have a compact or recessed design, which means they can have a capacity limit. Most are made to hold a standard roll, but larger versions can hold jumbo toilet paper rolls.

Convenience

A toilet paper roll holder can include a range of convenient features to make it easier to load and use. One feature to look for in a holder is accessibility; you’ll want an option that is easy to reach so you aren’t left twisting and shimmying to get to the roll. Look for an appropriate height, size, and installation type to place the holder in a comfortable-to-reach spot.

Consider the loading mechanism, which can include a spring-loaded post, pivoting post, or a simple slide-on post. A holder with a slide-on or pivoting post instead of a typical spring-loaded post can make it easier to change the roll. Some holders also include storage features, like a phone tray or a toiletry caddy, which can help improve bathroom organization.

Your toilet paper holder doesn’t have the most glamorous job, but since it’s still a notable bathroom fixture, you’ll want to choose a holder that suits your aesthetics. Since toilet paper holders come in various materials, colors, and finishes, there’s an option to suit pretty much any decor style.

Sleek, neutral-toned metal holders are a great pick for modern bathrooms, while warm-hued wood holders might better suit a rustic home. For a seamless look, consider matching the style or color of the holder with other bathroom fixtures like towel racks and cabinet hardware. Or you can use the holder to add some character to the bathroom; a colorful or patterned toilet paper holder can make a unique statement.

Our Top Picks

Whether you’re seeking the best value, the largest or most efficient paper reserve, or a compact model for the tiniest of bathrooms, these curated picks offer highly functional storage .

This Moen paper holder has it all, including easy installation. One of its best features is the pivoting post that holds the paper, allowing you to easily and quickly change rolls without fuss. Most toilet paper holders have a traditional roller with a spring inside, and it’s likely that most of us have dropped the post (or the parts) at one time or another.

The paper holder’s chrome, mirror-like finish will go with most any decor, and with its corrosion-resistant finish, the shine will last for years to come. This fixture coordinates well with other Moen Iso Collection accessories.

Q. Where should a toilet paper holder be installed?

Q. How do I install a toilet paper holder?

It depends on the toilet paper holder type. Q. How do you remove an old toilet paper holder?

Freestanding and tank-mounted holders are easy to remove, but wall-mounted holders may pose more of a challenge. Check to see whether the holder mounts using adhesive, screws, or anchors, and use the appropriate tools to detach it from the wall.

The Ultimate Guide to Toilet Paper Holders: Installation, Height, and Best Practices

The Ultimate Guide to Toilet Paper Holders: Installation, Height, and Best Practices

Improve Bathroom Comfort and Functionality: The Complete Toilet Paper Holder Guide

When it comes to bathroom design and functionality, the placement and installation of the toilet paper holder might not grab headlines but plays a crucial role in enhancing user comfort. This comprehensive guide covers everything from the optimal height and installation process to compliance standards and practical tips, ensuring your toilet paper holder is both accessible and aesthetically pleasing.

standard toilet paper dispenser height

Understanding the Ideal Height and Placement

Optimal height for comfort and accessibility.

  • Standard Height Recommendation: Mounting the toilet paper holder at about 26 inches (66 cm) off the ground is advised for most adults and children, ensuring it's within reach while seated.
  • Code Compliance: For public and accessible bathrooms, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) recommends a mounting height where the centerline of the holder is at least 19 inches from the floor, catering to users in wheelchairs.

What is the Maximum Height for a Toilet Paper Holder?

The maximum height for a toilet paper holder, particularly in settings that aim to be inclusive and accessible, should align with the guidelines set by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). According to ADA standards, the maximum height for a toilet paper dispenser is 36 inches (about 91.4 cm) above the finished floor. This specification is designed so that individuals in wheelchairs, as well as those who may have difficulty reaching or standing, can access the toilet paper comfortably and safely.

Placement Precision

  • Distance from the Toilet: The holder should ideally be 8 to 12 inches from the front of the toilet bowl. This placement minimizes reaching and twisting, catering to user convenience.
  • Horizontal Placement: Making sure the holder is level during installation is key to functionality and aesthetics.

a paper holder

Installation Tips for Secure Mounting

  • Mark and Measure: Before drilling, mark the drill spots using a level so the holder will be perfectly horizontal.
  • Drill with Care: Drill holes, insert wall anchors if necessary, and secure the holder firmly against the wall to prevent wobbling.

Why Are Toilet Paper Dispensers Mounted So Low?

  • Accessibility: Mounting toilet paper dispensers lower makes them more accessible to a wide range of users, including children, seated users, and individuals with mobility challenges. This positioning makes sure that users can easily reach the toilet paper without needing to stretch, bend, or stand up, which can be particularly important for individuals using wheelchairs.
  • Compliance with ADA Guidelines: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sets forth guidelines to ensure public restrooms are accessible to people with disabilities. According to ADA standards, the centerline of toilet paper dispensers should be installed at a minimum height of 19 inches (48.3 cm) above the finished floor to accommodate wheelchair users. Installing dispensers at a lower height helps meet these regulatory requirements.

Hanging the Toilet Roll: Over or Under?

The "over" method, with the paper rolling out from the top, generally prevails for its ease of grabbing and tearing. Yet, this choice can be tailored to the preferences of the users in each household or facility, emphasizing user convenience and accessibility.

ada compliant bathroom

Incorporating these guidelines and tips not only ensures that your toilet paper holder is installed correctly and at the right height but also enhances the overall comfort and functionality of your bathroom. By considering the needs of all users and adhering to recommended practices, you can create a welcoming and accessible bathroom environment. What is the recommended height for a toilet paper holder?

Answer: The recommended height for mounting a toilet paper holder is about 26 inches (66 cm) from the floor. This height is comfortable for most adults and older children when seated. For accessible bathrooms, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) suggests mounting the holder with its centerline at least 19 inches from the floor to accommodate wheelchair users.

How far from the toilet should the toilet paper holder be placed?

Answer: The toilet paper holder should be positioned 8 to 12 inches from the front of the toilet bowl to the center of the holder. This distance provides easy access without causing the user to reach too far or twist uncomfortably.

Is there a standard placement for the toilet paper holder regarding its distance from the back wall?

Answer: While there isn't a strict standard, a common practice is to place the toilet paper holder about 8 inches from the center of the toilet to the center of the holder. This measurement can vary based on the bathroom layout and user preference but serves as a comfortable distance for most users.

Can I install a toilet paper holder into drywall without studs?

Answer: Yes, you can install a toilet paper holder into drywall without studs by using wall anchors. These anchors are designed to spread out behind the drywall, providing a secure hold for the holder. It's crucial to use the appropriate size and type of wall anchor for the weight of the holder and to follow the installation instructions carefully.

What is the correct way to hang a toilet roll: over or under?

Answer: The debate between over or under is ongoing, but most people prefer the "over" method, where the paper rolls out from the top. This orientation is generally considered easier for grabbing and tearing the paper. Ultimately, the choice should cater to personal preferences and the needs of the household's users.

Do I need any special tools to install a toilet paper holder?

Answer: Basic tools required for installing a toilet paper holder include a drill, drill bits, a screwdriver, wall anchors (if mounting without studs), a level, and a pencil or marker for marking drill spots. Using a level ensures that the holder is mounted straight, providing a better appearance and functionality.

Why might toilet paper holders be mounted lower in some bathrooms?

Answer: Toilet paper holders may be mounted lower to cater to children, seated users, or individuals with mobility challenges, ensuring the paper is within easy reach. Adhering to ADA guidelines, even in private homes, can also make bathrooms more accessible and comfortable for everyone.

What are ADA heights for toilet paper dispenser?

Answer: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides specific guidelines to ensure that bathrooms are accessible and usable by people with disabilities. For toilet paper dispensers, the ADA standards specify that the centerline of the toilet paper dispenser should be mounted at a minimum height of 19 inches (48.3 cm) and a maximum height of 36 inches (91.4 cm) above the finished floor. This range is designed to make the dispenser accessible for individuals in wheelchairs and to accommodate a variety of mobility needs.

Transform Your Paper Towel Holder Into A Gorgeous Hanging Plant With This TikTok Hack

H anging plants are incredibly useful if you want to keep your greenery away from curious pets or give them better placement near a window, but spending additional money and time on buying new pots and hooks can get a bit annoying, especially when there are so many hanging plant hacks floating around the internet and social media. This hack, shared originally by  DIY with Emma , can be particularly helpful if you want to transform your existing pots into something ready to hang only using a simple paper towel holder.

To do this yourself, all you need is a metal wire paper towel holder — one of the cheaper options, preferably — a drill, and your existing plant pot, ideally in a material that's easy to drill through like plastic. You'll also need something to hang from your ceiling or porch when it comes time to hang your plant, but anything from a Command strip to a more permanently installed hook will do the trick depending on your situation.

How To Use This Hack Yourself

In her TikTok video , creator DIY with Emma shows the very simple process of achieving this hack. First, you're going to need to gather your materials. In the video, DIY with Emma is using a metal paper towel holder with a wooden bottom, a ceramic plant pot, a drill, and some painter's tape. Take a look at your pot to determine the material, then gently remove the houseplant that's inside it. Plastic pots are easiest to drill through without worries of cracking, though drilling through ceramic pots can be accomplished with a bit of water and an angled approach to drilling.

From there, place the vertical piece of the paper towel holder through your newly-drilled hole in the pot, and get to work replanting your houseplant. The metal piece in the center will act as both a trellis for climbing plants as well as a spot to place a hook or other method of suspension, and the hole at the bottom of the pot will provide the  proper drainage to prevent water pooling and root rot.

What To Keep In Mind With This Hack

In the original video , DIY with Emma is using a metal paper towel holder with a solid wooden base for the plant pot to sit on. When looking for your own paper towel holder, it's important to prioritize the shape and choose an option with a loop on top like this paper towel holder from Dollar Tree. Once you find something you can easily hang, you can add an additional piece of plastic, wood, or ceramic to the bottom of the paper towel holder to provide a solid surface to catch drips.

Another important consideration is the type of plant that you're intending to place in the pot. Because this hack requires you to insert a paper towel holder through the center of the pot, plants that already have a dense root system probably won't be the best bet. Instead, opt for plants with a shallower root system, like pothos or snake plants.
