When it comes to windows everything just comes too easy. I mean you gotta work for that too but the sense of accomplishment just ain’t there. When it comes to Linux, everything feels like an accomplishment. So now today folks I am gonna teach you how to change Kali Linux IP address in Kali Linux using Graphical Interface.  

Who knows when it is useful? I don’t even touch it much, coz I am lazy like that so here is how to change the IP configuration.

Step 1:  Boot your Linux system, login by giving username and password. Once you get the desktop, You will see a network icon on right side in Top Bar.

One you see don’t wait anymore move to the next step and right-click on the network icon.

You will see multiple options for choosen, as you can see in the following image.

Then click on edit connections

Step 2: You will see this Dialogue box. Here you find all the available/connected network adapter.

I have only one, so select it and click on Setting icon exist in the left bottom in dialogue box.

Step 3:  The following dialogue box will appear that has already specified the connection name. Or you can rename it anything you like, name it Soul-Sucking Pony if you like.

Step 4: Click on IPv4 Settings Tab, Because Ipv6 is not used in common practice.

Step 5:  Select the method as manual, because we hardworking, not lazy at all folks are making manual changes. So click on Add button.

The new entry section will be appear inside “Addition Static addresses” box.

Step 6:  Put the IP address , Netmask, and Gateway. Even you can define DNS servers as manual.

Once everything done click on Save button exist in lower bottom side of dialogue box.

You need to restart the interface for the new config to take effect in ‘ifconfig’ or ‘ip address’

Hi Sabelo, When you change setting NAT to Bridged Adapter, IP is given by the Local DHCP server (Wif Modem, mobile Hotspot), and it is not necessary to start with 192…. etc. So check the settings of the local DHCP server. The following command may help you ifconfig eth0 down ifconfig eth0 up

Where eth0 is netwrok adapter name, It may change in your system, check it ifconfig

Kali Linux Set Static IP – How to Configure in 2 Ways

A static IP address is simply one that doesn’t change over time. It’s a permanent address assigned to a device connected to a network. Unlike a dynamic IP address usually provided by a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server, which may change over time, a static IP address stays fixed.

So now you might wonder why you need a static IP address. Static IPs allow your device to be reached at the same address by a remote access service like a VPN . They also ensure you have better network security and consistent availability. Mail, FTP, and web servers also benefit from it.

In this tutorial, we’ll show you the different methods of setting up a static IP address in Kali Linux 2023.1. But, of course, the methods are more or less the same for older or upcoming versions.

Let’s get started!

How to Set Static IP in Kali Linux

Now that you have some basic ideas about static IP addresses let’s move on to the main part of the article, which is how to set it up in Kali Linux.

First, we need to check the network we are currently connected to. We can check the default gateway by running this command:

The IP address you after ‘default via’ is the IP address that represents the default route or gateway. In our case, it’s 10.0.2.2.

For a more detailed version of your local IP addresses, you can use this command:

Now notice the highlighted line. It displays the assigned IP address to the eth0 network interface. This is the address that will change once we set up a static IP. So without further ado, let’s see the different methods to set that in Kali Linux .

We will show you two terminal methods to set static ip in Kali Linux .

By Editing the Network Interface File

First, we’ll cover how you can do the whole process from your terminal. First, open the /etc/network/interfaces file in your preferred text editor. We will use Nano for this tutorial. So the command will be as follows:

This should open the file in the nano editor. Add the following lines to the file:

Replace the placeholder texts with the appropriate values. In our example, it looks like this:

The first line is the network interface. We saw this when we used the ‘ip r’ command. Yours may be different and in the format of wlpXsY where X and Y are numbers.

The third line is where you set your static IP address. You need to make sure that the IP address you’re entering is available. And lastly, the default gateway.

Once you’re done with the file, save it with Ctrl + O. Then exit using Ctrl + X. When that’s done, run the below command to make the changes take effect:

Restart Networking

You’re still not done. If you try to access the internet, it will fail. That’s because you haven’t yet set the Domain Name System. To do that, you need to tweak the /etc/resolv.conf. So first, open the file in a text editor. Or you can delete the file and create a new one.

To delete the file, use this command:

After that, create a new file in that same directory with the same name. You can do this by opening it in any file editor. To do that, run this command:

After the file opens, write the following line in the file

Update The DNS Server IP

Save the file and exit. Now test if it works by running this command:

If you see a similar output, it means that it’s working fine.

Using ifconfig

Another way to do this is by utilizing the ifconfig command. First, set the IP address and the netmask with the following command:

In our case, it looks like this:

Once you’ve done that, now set the default gateway for the ethernet port zero by running this command:

Now you only need to configure the DNS. You can do that with this command:

Remember to go root for this command.

If you’re uncomfortable using the terminal in Linux , you can follow this method instead.

You will find all the options at the top right corner of your home window. At the very left is the network settings icon. Right-click on the icon.

From the drop-down menu, choose Edit Connections .

A window will appear. Now choose the connection that you want to configure. In this case, we only have one option called Wired Connection 1,  so we will choose that.

In the new window, click on the tab that says IPv4 Settings .

Click on the Method  drop-down menu, and choose Manual .

Next, tap the Add  button to add a new IP address.

Now is the most important part. You need to set an IP address, a Netmask, and a Gateway. One by one, type in the correct values.

The green color indicates that the values we entered are available. Otherwise, it would be highlighted in red. After you’re finished, press the Save button.

Now you need to restart your device. You can do that with this command:

So now, if you recheck the current IP address, it should be changed to the one you set.

How do I set up an IP address on a Linux VM running in VM Player so I can access it from my Windows 7 host?

I have just installed an Openbravo appliance on my Windows 7 VM Player host. I am now staring at a command prompt that tells me to go to http://localhost to access the ERP system, but I cannot find any browser on the appliance. I am guessing I should rather follow their advice to configure an IP address for the Linux VM and just access that from a Windows browser on my host. How do I go about this? More specifically,

  • How do I choose a local IP address to assign?
  • How do I set things up so that this IP address is visible to my Windows host?

Their help says to assign an DNS, to make the server visible to the internet, but internet visibility per se is not needed. How should I interpret or adapt this help for that?

Finally to make the IP address available to the Internet, assign some DNS servers to it: $ echo "nameserver IP_DNS1" >> /etc/resolv.conf $ echo "nameserver IP_DNS2" >> /etc/resolv.conf

New solution suitable for the Poster's setup. I cannot simplify it more than this.

Step 1 : In VMWare Player's main window, right click on the VM name and select "Virtual Machine Settings".

Step 2 : In the settings window, click on "Network Adapter" and among the options on the right, select "Host-only: a private network shared with the host".

Step 3 : click ok.

BE SURE : The VMWare Player settings must be the default. If you fooled around with the various virtual network interfaces VMWare creates during installation, this won't work .

Step 4 : Boot your virtual machine.

Step 5 : If you have access to the linux command prompt, assign the ip address 192.168.40.129 like this (if you have root access):

ifconfig eth0 192.168.40.129 netmask 255.255.255.0

or Step 5b : sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.40.129 netmask 255.255.255.0 (if you don't have root access).

In Windows:

Step 6 : open the start menu and launch "Command Prompt". You find it in All Programs -> Accessories.

Step 7 : Inside the command prompt, type ipconfig /all and press enter. One of the lines should display something like this:

The first three dotted groups of numbers should be identical to the one you configured inside your VM. The Subnet Mask should be identical to the one you added after the word "netmask" in the linux command you typed in Step 5.

Step 8 : With the VM running, switch back to Windows and from the command prompt you opened in Step 6, type ping 192.168.40.129

You should get an output pretty much like this:

Step 9 : On Windows, open up your browser and type in: http://192.168.40.129 .

Let me know if it works.

This answer takes for granted a "normal" home networking setup with a simple subnet and a simple private addressing. Different/more complex setups (such as a corporate network etc) will require a few modifications to the commands in order to work and you might have to check for other things. In a Home scenario with a simple home router, this should work.

Fixed a typo. The virtual machine should have a different address in the same network. So the very last number to the right should change, everything else should remain the same.

Original Poster's setup is not common (lack of any kind of network whatsoever save from a 3G connection, which is not suitable) so the original solution involving bridged networking (which would have allowed the virtual machine to reach internet) was scrapped. Current solution uses the "host-only" virtual adapter. Less flexible but given the limited requirements of the poster, suitable.

Scrap the bit about dns, you do not need it.

Turn off the virtual machine and go into its settings and under the Network Adapter option choose "bridged networking" (rather than Host-ONly or NAT).

In Windows, find out your local IP address.

You can find it out by going into the system tray, bottom right, and right click on the "status" option for your network connection. There should be a button called "details" that will give you, among other data, your current IP Address.

It will be likely something on the line of 192.168.1.102 or 192.168.0.102 etc. Once you have your Windows IP address (for the sake of this we will assume it is 192.168.1.102),

Turn on again the virtual machine and if you have access to the linux command prompt, type this (logged in as root):

If you don't have direct root access add "sudo" at the start of the line:

Then switch back to Windows and in your browser type http://192.168.1.103

  • some distributions need to omit the "address" field, so it would be ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.103 netmask 255.255.255.0 Also,you need a proper network connection. It is enough to connect your pc to a network switch. In that case you will have to also assign a static IP to your Windows PC. I pointed out that it would have worked properly only in a "normal" situation :) There are several ways of obtaining what you want to do but this is the only one that is easily explainable without using documentation (i don't have VMWare on hand at the moment and i'm going by memory). How to find the IP Address of a VM running on VMware (or other methods of using VM)

I am running VMware Workstation on a Linux box.

When I power on a centOS (Linux) virtual machine I cannot get mouse or keyboard control of the machine. I suspect that it has something to do with the error message:

You do not have VMware Tools installed in this guest. Chose "Install VMware Tools" from the VM menu.

If I click on that menu option, it inserts a virtual cd with drivers etc. This does not help me since I don't have keyboard or mouse control over the machine.

I was thinking that if I could figure out the IP address or hostname I could use any number of protocols to get into the machine (SSH comes to mind).

How can I get the IP address or hostname of this machine?

Note: I did not create this machine. A coworker created it who is no longer with the company. Would save me a lot of time if I could get into the machine. I have login credentials so that won't be a problem.

  • VMware Tools only gives you enhanced mouse integration (among other things); for example, the mouse no longer gets trapped in the VM window, forcing you to manually release it. Without the Tools, the VM should still be able to capture the keyboard and mouse, by clicking on/in the window and typing. There are icons in the bottom right of the host window that show the capture state. –  Ken Jun 8, 2012 at 1:04

First Go in the Virtual Machine Settings.

Found the MAC address

Then in the Network Section, click the Advanced button and read the MAC address

Then in the console execute: arp -a

Find the MAC address in the displayed list (That you found in advance setting of network adapter above) and the IP will be on the side of this particular MAC Address.

In this case the IP is: 192.168.20.128

  • On Windows10 you can use Settings -> Network & Internet -> Ethernet and click on VMWare Network Adapter VMNet8 which is the switch used for NAT: Useing the host's IP address . If you're useing Bridged, then it will be VMNet1 . Once you click it you will see IP address assigned to that switch and it's MAC address. You can confirm it's the same MAC address in the same settings menu in @F Boucheros anwser –  loostro Aug 5, 2016 at 17:58

Please check, if not those input devices are connected to the guest OS as USB devices? Once disconnecting them, they should become accessible to the host OS - and therefore operational.

  • @RivieraKid those commands can be executed on a local console of any machine running within VMware - if basic keyboard and/or mouse are not available at the shell prompt - that rather sounds like a general container mis-configuration... because only the enhanced keyboard depends on VMware tools. if no keyboard - simply mounting the disk into a fully functional OS is always possible (and rather hassle free). –  Martin Zeitler Jun 25, 2015 at 7:41

On Windows 7,

  • Copied the MAC address to the clipboard
  • Open C:\ProgramData\VMware\vmnetdhcp.leases in Notepad
  • Search for the MAC address string.

There is a built-in VNC service in Workstation. I've not used it, but the config (below) would seem to suggest that you could enable it, and use your host's IP with a particular port with any of a number of VNC clients to gain control of your virtual machine.

I have the same problem, I type command on linux

but it shows something like 127.0.0.1 which not what I was looking for.

I notice that when I install Linux (CentOS) in VMware I did not set network configuration.

So,I solve this problem by installing a new Linux VM again. During the installation there is a section to configure network like in the picture.

When the installation is done I type "ip adddr" and I can see the IP.

Don't know about Linux, but in Windows you could …

Add another network interface to the VM, which will be using VMware DHCP to assign a known IP to your VM. You should set up VMware DHCP to a very short address range and it will be easy to pick the IP (also would be problematic to check, because default Windows firewall settings don't allow incoming echo requests... But you're not Windows)

Try to pick the subnet where your VM is, put another PC to the subnet (another VM or your physical PC) – and use Computer Browser service ("Network" or "My Network places") to find the VM.

You should also look for network scanning software.

By the way, what's the VM network mode? Host-only private network (with or without NAT) or bridged?

Maybe it is too late for answer, but I had same problem. Simply install VMware vSphere Client and after logon you can right click on VM and open in console where mouse and keyboard works. CTRL + ALT to exit your mouse from console.

To find any unknown host on your network (whether it's a VM or not) you can use Angry IP scanner . Another option for Linux is arp-scan (it's not usually installed by default, but has very few dependencies). The command arp-scan -l will give you a table of IP addresses and associated MAC addresses. All of your VM's will have similar MAC addresses, so you can narrow it down that way if you have a large network.

Configure a virtual IP (VIP) subnet for the Data Network. You can configure the VIP range to use when a virtual service is placed on the specific VIP network. You can configure DHCP for the Service Engines. Optionally, if DHCP is unavailable, you can configure a pool of IP addresses which will get assigned to the Service Engine interface on that network. vSphere with Tanzu supports only a single VIP network.

  • In the NSX Advanced Load Balancer Controller dashboard, Infrastructure > Networks > .
  • Select the cloud from the list. For example, select Default-Cloud .
  • Enter a name for the network. For example, Data Nework .
  • Keep DHCP Enabled selected if DHCP is available on the Data Network. Deselect this option if DHCP is not available.
