Delta now has 'dynamic' seat maps that automatically block rows for families

Zach Griff

Throughout the pandemic, Delta was one of the major U.S. carriers to guarantee flyers extra space by blocking the middle seat for additional social distancing and passenger comfort .

While that policy is now history, the Atlanta-based carrier has implemented a new type of seat blocking. This one, however, is designed to make it easier for groups of travelers to sit together.

Want more airline-specific news? Sign up for TPG's free new biweekly Aviation newsletter .

Specifically, the carrier is blocking a handful of rows in the main economy cabin for those traveling as part of a group. These seats are not assignable to solo travelers, nor to those traveling with just one additional person on the reservation.

They'll instead be available for selection by those who have reservations with three or more travelers on a single reservation. (They'll also be available to Medallion elite members traveling with one or two passengers.)

Delta's "dynamic seat-map algorithm," as the airline calls it, first started rolling out quietly in 2019 and now uses historical booking and seat assignment data to determine how many rows to hold back on a given flight. For instance, a search for flights between New York and Fort Lauderdale — a leisure-heavy route — shows that the airline is holding back five rows.

delta seat map x

Meanwhile, on a more typical business route frequented by solo travelers, say from Chicago to Boston, the airline is holding back just two rows.

In the most extreme example of seat-blocking that I could find, Delta is holding back a whopping eight rows, or 48 seats, on a Christmas Eve flight from New York-JFK to Cancun.

The seat-blocking varies by aircraft, route and other factors, a spokesperson confirmed to TPG. The logic incorporates many factors, and there's no definitive "rule" as to how many seats will be held back on a given flight. For now, Delta is only blocking the last few rows on any given plane, though that logic could theoretically change over time.

Related: How to make sure your family can sit together on a plane

In fact, the airline will update the algorithm in real-time, and it'll release seats if it determines that there are more solo travelers than groups or families on a given flight compared to the algorithm's original prediction.

In confirming the move to TPG, Delta said that "being a customer-centric brand means we're constantly working to offer optimal experiences across travel. Taking a dynamic approach with our seat map displays is one way of doing that by providing preferred seating choices in all cabins – at the time of booking or at the gate when working with an agent – for customers traveling alone or with a group."

How to find Delta's blocked seats

To determine if Delta is blocking seats on your flight, you can perform two searches during the booking process — one with just a single passenger in the reservation, followed by a second search for the same flight with three or more passengers.

If you take a look at the seat map in both cases, you should be able to identify which seats Delta is blocking for groups. For example, in the screenshot below, you can see that Delta is holding back rows 29 through 31 for bookings of three or more passengers. (Rows 32 and 33 remain blocked for all passengers, and they're only available for assignment at the airport.)

delta seat map x

Bottom line

Delta's move is interesting as it's one of the first attempts we've seen from a major network carrier to provide dedicated seating areas for groups.

Of course, if seats closer to the front of the plane are available, you don't necessarily "need" to select a row in the back. This initiative just provides another option should adjacent seats closer to the front of the plane be unavailable.

In the end, this should also help minimize the number of times a family needs to scramble at the gate (or onboard) to find passengers willing to play musical chairs to accommodate them sitting together. The move will likely be applauded by families, especially those traveling with young children.

In fact, the dynamic seat blocking might lead to a faster boarding process , especially on flights with lots of families and groups traveling together. One big downside is that solo flyers booking at the last minute could end up being stuck in a middle towards the front, as opposed to a window or aisle in the back.

Either way, it'll be interesting to see how Delta's seat-blocking algorithm evolves over time — and whether any of its competitors implement something similar.

The Mean Squinty Eye Works

  • Sep 19, 2021

Can someone tell me what they mean? Are they for social distance? The 4 of us traveling have 3 different reservations. We all had seats next to each other way in the back of the plane. My sister moved her husband and herself up 14 rows on the airplane, as that row showed empty. Once she did that, the seats around her went to X. So the remaining 2 of us can't shift to be next to them. It is not that big of a deal, but I'm just wondering if someone can explain. If when we start our trip those seats still show as X should we ask at the gate if we can move to them?

Delta is not blocking seats for social distancing any more.

PHM - Feb 2022! First runDisney!

I wondered the same thing. It’s weird. I have 4 flights booked in the next few months and there are Xs all over the place. It’s not social distancing. I’d say call to ask and they should be able to move you together again. But that requires 2 hours on hold. Not cool.

  • Sep 20, 2021

I’ve been wondering about those X’s too. When I booked my flight (main cabin), I couldn’t even select a seat…yet 1/3 of the seating map is X’s. Calling now. “Current hold time- less than 2 hours”, they said. Let’s see how long this takes.

EACarlson

Delta is blocking a lot of seats for multiple reasons. I have a flight where DL blocked all of Comfort +, changing my flight to a later one that had C+, now three weeks later they've re-opened half of C+. All of this with only 25 seats assigned on the airline. Usually the seats in the back of the plane are blocked off to be assigned at the gate to Basic Economy passengers.

Just got off the phone. Agent knew nothing about these blocked seats. She was able to put me in a seat, albeit 5 rows from the back of the plane. I understand delta may need to block seats for something, but if they’re going to sell me a main cabin seat, and I’m paying for the ability to select my seat, they should provide that to me.

kristenrice

kristenrice

Not just an ambulance driver.

Could they possibly be blocking them because they may be anticipating a change in aircraft that won’t have the same number of seats in that row?? That way, they won’t have 5 people booked in a row that will only accommodate 4. I’m only speculating….

In addition to gate flexibility, some seats are blocked because they’re close to the lavs or have another negative attribute like limited recline.

js

Been around since before the disboards 90s crash

I thought those are the seats that they use when people don't purchase their exact seat ahead of time but that is just a guess from me.

I have been wondering the same thing. My flight on Friday has a lot of various spots X-ed out (3 in first class, 5 in Comfort, and 37 in Main cabin (including almost all of the 4-5 rows (4 on one side and 5 rows on the other, with a couple aisle seats booked in those rows only). My Mom and I are in row 14 (aisle/window with a stranger between us despite a lot of other open seats (including window or aisle seats) all over the plane) and the aisle/middle seat across from us is X-ed out and window shows a passenger in it.

Donna M

I noticed that too and thought it was odd. I was just checking to see if the seat next to us was taken yet when it showed all the x's so I change to a different class and the x's went away, weird. I'm going to go and check again. Just checked, the seat next to us has an x, but most seats are now full and last week most seats were empty. The return flight has more x's, but not too many.

dreamit

I fly Delta quite a bit, and I’ve never experienced this until now. My daughter and I don’t have seats for our trip next week. I’m just leaving it to change, hoping we get seated together. I don’t feel like dealing with a long hold-time.

Booking a Delta Air Lines flight and wondering about Delta’s seat selection? It’s no wonder — with differing benefits for elite members and strict restrictions on basic economy tickets, figuring out how and when to choose your Delta seat can quickly become overwhelming.

Here's a look at Delta seat assignments, how Delta Air Lines’ seating system works and the costs of choosing a seat.

Delta operates a variety of cabin classes on its aircraft, including economy, Premium Select, first class and Delta One seats.

Like most airlines, Delta will allow you to select your seat when booking, though the cost to do so and any upcharges will vary depending on the flight you’re taking. Those flying with families and wondering “does Delta seat families together?” are in luck. Delta does its best to seat families together, even after check-in.

According to an analysis of airline fees by NerdWallet, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines charge the least for seat selection, while budget airlines Frontier and Spirit charge the most.

Delta sits in the middle, charging an average of $15-plus for each flight that you'd like to select a seat for. The cost will vary depending on the type of ticket you book with the airline — which we'll discuss next.

» Learn more: How to navigate costly airline seat selection fees

How much is seat selection on Delta Air Lines? That will depend on the ticket type you’re purchasing, be it basic economy, main cabin, Premium Select (premium economy), first class or Delta One.

Basic economy

Basic economy tickets have the most restrictions of any Delta ticket, and this extends to seat selection. Those who book basic economy tickets won't be able to select seats; instead, a seat will be randomly assigned to each passenger after check-in. This includes families and groups who are traveling together — expect to be split up when booking a basic economy ticket.

If you reserve a basic economy ticket, it’s possible to purchase a specific seat starting seven days before departure. Pricing for this varies by trip and is priced by segment.

Main cabin seating, also known as regular economy, includes complimentary seat selection. As a main cabin customer, you also have the option to purchase an upgrade to preferred or Delta Comfort Plus seats while remaining an economy class passenger.

You can also book upgraded economy tickets with additional seat selection perks:

Main Cabin Preferred: Main Cabin Preferred seats are functionally the same as regular main cabin seats. The difference lies in the seat location; Main Cabin Preferred seats are typically window and aisle seats nearer to the front of the plane, plus exit rows. These are the least expensive upgrades from standard economy seating.

Comfort Plus: When available, a Delta Comfort Plus ticket can be purchased directly while booking and the price will include seat selection. The cost to upgrade is higher than for a preferred seat in main cabin. Comfort Plus features more legroom than main cabin and offers passengers dedicated overhead bins. In addition, Comfort Plus guests will receive complimentary beer and wine on all domestic and short-haul international flights.

Main cabin passengers can also choose to upgrade to a Comfort Plus seat either before or after purchasing their ticket.

Premium Select

Premium Select is Delta’s version of premium economy, with larger seats and better recline, two free checked bags, earlier boarding and premium extras. Those who book Premium Select can choose any seat within the cabin for no additional fee.

Delta One and first class

Both first class and Delta One ticket holders can choose any seat within their cabin for free. These spacious seats come with two free checked bags, premium snacks and meals, priority boarding, and a dedicated flight attendant.

What Does Unavailable Seat Mean on Delta: A Quick Explanation

Table of Contents

Understanding Delta’s Seat Availability

What does unavailable seat mean on delta?

“Unavailable seat” on Delta means to a seat on a Delta flight that is not able to be selected or booked by customers. Some common reasons a Delta seat may show as unavailable include:

  • The seat is already occupied by another passenger. Once booked, a seat will show as unavailable to other customers.
  • The seat is blocked for airline use. Delta may block certain seats for crew rest purposes, for passengers with disabilities, or to spread passengers out for weight and balance.
  • The seat is broken or unusable. If a seat is broken or has some other mechanical issue, Delta will block it from being booked.
  • The seat is held for elite/full-fare passengers. Delta reserves some seats for elite-status passengers and those booking more expensive ticket classes that allow seat selection.
  • The seat map hasn’t been fully loaded yet. Sometimes on the website or app, it takes a minute for the full updated seat map to load. A seat may appear unavailable until the map refreshes.

So you know, it’s a normal part of the booking process, not an error. Checking back often or selecting another flight can sometimes resolve unavailable seats.

Remember that while you might not always be able to secure your preferred seat immediately, keeping an eye on your booking in My Trips will allow you to check for any updates to seat availability and make changes as needed. This way, you can have a comfortable and enjoyable flight experience with Delta.

Seat Map and Aircraft Details

Interpreting delta’s seat map.

When booking a flight with Delta, you will come across their interactive seat map. This handy tool allows you to view, select, or change your seat assignment in a user-friendly manner. The seat map displays the aircraft’s layout and provides details on seat availability. It is important to understand the various designations shown on the map.

An “occupied” seat label means someone has already selected that seat. On the other hand, an “unavailable” label might indicate the seat is blocked for various reasons, like a schedule change or aircraft substitution. In some cases, unavailable seats may later open up and become available for selection before the departure date.

Don’t be alarmed if you see some seats marked as unavailable, particularly middle seats. Delta has a policy of blocking select middle seats as a safety measure amid the ongoing pandemic. This ensures a certain level of social distance between passengers.

Types of Seats on Delta’s Aircrafts

Delta offers various seat options on their flights to suit your preferences and budget. Here is a quick overview of the types of seats available:

  • Basic Economy : These are the most affordable seats, but with limited perks. Seat selection is typically not available until check-in, which may result in limited choices.
  • Main Cabin : More comfortable than Basic Economy, Main Cabin seats offer complimentary snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, and in-flight entertainment. Delta lets you select your seat at the time of booking or later.
  • Delta Comfort+ : Offering more legroom and some additional perks, Delta Comfort+ seats provide a more enjoyable experience. Expect priority boarding and dedicated overhead bin space with this upgraded choice.
  • First Class : For an elevated travel experience, First Class comes with premium seats, personalized service, and exclusive amenities. Expect wider seats, more legroom, and a premium dining experience.
  • Delta One : As the ultimate in luxury, Delta One is available on select long-haul international flights and cross-country routes. It offers lie-flat seats, premium dining, and exclusive in-flight amenities.

When selecting a seat on Delta’s aircraft, it’s essential to consider the various options available and your personal preferences. Remember that the seat map is your key to understanding the aircraft’s layout and ensuring a comfortable flight.

Unavailable Seat Reasons

Delta Air Lines may label some seats as “unavailable” for various reasons. Understanding these reasons can help you better plan your trip and be aware of potential changes to your seating arrangement. In this section, we will discuss the most common reasons for unavailable seats on Delta flights, including seat blocks, seat upgrade options, and high demand routes.

Seat Blocks

Sometimes, Delta may block certain seats from being selected by passengers. These seat blocks could be reserved for passengers with basic economy fares, allowing the airline to seat families together or accommodate passengers who need to change their seats due to flight changes or other issues. This is one reason you might see an unavailable seat next to you when booking or managing your seat selection.

Seat Upgrade Options

Another reason for unavailable seats could be related to seat upgrade options. Delta offers passengers the opportunity to upgrade their seats for more comfort, extra legroom, or more advanced features. If a seat is marked “unavailable,” it may be reserved for passengers who choose to upgrade their ticket class or seating. This allows the airline to provide better seating options for their more premium or loyal customers.

High Demand Routes

Lastly, high demand routes might also influence the availability of seats on Delta flights. On popular routes, there may be a higher demand for specific seating, which can result in seats being marked as unavailable. The more passengers there are on a route, the more likely it is that you will see unavailable seats on the seat map. This is the airline’s way of managing high demand and ensuring that they maximize their revenue potential.

In summary, unavailable seats on Delta can come from a variety of reasons, including seat blocks, upgrade options, and high demand routes. By being aware of these factors, you can better understand why certain seats are not available and potentially make adjustments to your seating preferences accordingly.

Ticket Types and Seat Availability

Basic economy tickets.

When you book a Basic Economy ticket with Delta, it’s important to know that seat selection is subject to a few more restrictions. As a result, you might come across some seats marked as “unavailable” on the booking platform. These are typically reserved for passengers who don’t have advance seat assignments, such as those on Basic Economy fares. This reservation ensures that families and other groups can be seated together prior to departure.

In addition, Delta might block certain seats for contingencies, like the last few rows of the plane or the first row of Comfort+ seats. These unavailable seats might show up as “occupied” or “blocked,” giving you an indication of how full the flight might be. It’s worth keeping this in mind when you’re selecting seats, as it can impact the overall flight experience.

First Class Tickets

When booking a First Class ticket with Delta, you’ll enjoy a more seamless seat selection process and increased availability. With First Class, seat assignment is usually confirmed at the time of ticket purchase, and you’ll have access to preferred seats. However, there can still be occasions when certain seats are marked as “unavailable.”

This can happen if the seats are being held for other passengers with priority access or in case of operational reasons, like accommodating passengers with special needs. In these situations, you might find that some First Class seats are temporarily marked as “unavailable” and might open up closer to the departure date.

Remember, seat availability varies based on the ticket type and the specific flight. Factors like operational requirements and passenger needs can impact seat selection for both Basic Economy and First Class travelers on Delta. So, as you plan your trip, it’s helpful to be aware of these differences and how they might affect your booking experience.

Passenger Groups and Seat Availability

Traveling with families or groups can make seat selection on Delta flights a bit more challenging, but don’t worry, there are ways to ensure you sit together. First and foremost, it’s important to understand what “unavailable” means when viewing the Delta seat map. An “unavailable” seat is usually marked with an “X” and could be temporarily unavailable for a variety of reasons, including reserving some middle seats to maintain social distancing, seat assignments for elite status members or disabled passengers, or because a schedule or aircraft change has occurred.

If you’re traveling with family or friends and want to secure seats next to each other, be proactive in choosing your seats as early as possible. Delta may block some middle seats for certain situations, but that doesn’t necessarily mean these seats won’t become available later on. If you booked your tickets separately, try adjusting your seat selection closer to the departure date as some seats might become available.

If you’re flying in Basic Economy class, you likely won’t have the option to select your seats together, as seat assignments are given when you check-in. However, you can always kindly ask the gate agent to help accommodate your group if possible, but be prepared for the possibility that you may not be able to sit together.

Sometimes, a fellow passenger might be open to switching seats with you, which can create an opportunity to sit with your family or group members. Don’t be afraid to politely inquire if another traveler would be willing to help you out, so you and your loved ones can enjoy the journey together. Just remember to maintain a friendly and understanding tone while making such requests.

In summary, be proactive in selecting your seats early by keeping an eye on seat availability via the Delta seat map and adjust your bookings as needed. Secondly, utilize the support of gate agents and fellow passengers to improve your chances of sitting with your family or group members during your Delta flight.

Public Feedback on Delta’s Seat Availability

It seems that many people have been wondering about Delta’s seat availability, specifically seats marked as “unavailable.” This post on Reddit is a good example of public feedback discussing this topic.

One user explains that some seats, typically at the back of the plane or in an exit row, are held for gate control. These seats might be reserved for passengers with basic economy fares or those with disabilities. This could be a reason why you see many seats marked as “unavailable.”

Another Reddit discussion raises the same question – why are so many seats marked as unavailable? Users mentioned that they knew some seats were occupied because they had relatives on a flight. It appears that Delta might block seats in advance for various reasons, not just because they are already occupied.

In some cases, seats might be marked as unavailable to keep them free for families traveling together, or passengers who need special assistance. Delta may want to ensure there’s flexibility to reassign seats if necessary for operational reasons or customer satisfaction.

So, now that you have an idea of what the public has to say about Delta’s seat availability, remember to keep an open mind and not assume that an “unavailable” seat is necessarily occupied. There could be multiple reasons for that designation, making it a flexible and dynamic seating arrangement.

Delta joins United in debuting special CRJ-550 regional jet with walk-up bar

I t's not often that you hear travelers sing the praises of a regional jet, but that might be about to change aboard Delta Air Lines.

The Atlanta-based carrier's regional affiliate SkyWest Airlines will introduce the custom-configured Bombardier CRJ-550 regional jet on select Delta Connection flights, as first reported by AirlineGeeks and later confirmed to TPG by a carrier spokesperson.

Delta's CRJ-550 will debut in the coming weeks, and it be outfitted in the exact same configuration as United Airlines'. The jet will feature 10 first-class recliners, as well as 20 extra-legroom Comfort+ seats and 20 standard economy seats.

Want more airline-specific news? Sign up for TPG's free biweekly Aviation newsletter .

Unlike other regional jets, the CRJ-550 will also feature three special luggage closets between first class and economy, with space for a handful of full-size rollaboards. Typically, when flying on a small regional jet, large carry-on bags must be gate-checked or valeted for delivery after the flight.

This process takes up precious time during connections and is also a way for travelers to lose their bags. (That's why I always recommend using Apple AirTags , even when you're traveling with only carry-ons.)

Map watching: The award for 'sexiest new route' of the year goes to ...

In addition to the storage closets, first-class passengers will enjoy a small walk-up bar area stocked with snacks and soft drinks in the galley.

Across all three cabins, the CRJ-550 will fit a total of 50 passengers — a number that was intentionally chosen by Delta for one big strategic reason.

Major U.S. airlines have so-called scope clauses with their pilot unions that limit the number of flights that can be operated with regional jets. These scope clauses are designed to ensure that carriers won't simply outsource as much flying as possible to (cheaper) regional affiliates.

Scope clauses put a cap on the number of flights that can be operated by smaller regional jets. However, there's typically one big exemption from these scope clauses: They don't apply to regional jets that fit 50 passengers or fewer.

As for the CRJ-550, this plane is purposefully laid out to accommodate just 50 passengers. In fact, the fuselage of the CRJ-550 is the exact same one as the CRJ-700, which can fit around 70 passengers.

However, due to the scope clause, Delta can't simply add more flights on the CRJ-700 (or even larger regional jets) if it wants to grow its regional operations.

It can remove seats from regional jets to accommodate 50 passengers, thereby avoiding violating the scope clause and giving passengers a more comfortable onboard experience.

In fact, this is a move first popularized by United, and its United Express regional division. The Chicago-based carrier was the first airline to fly the CRJ-550 back in 2019 . Given the plane's premium-heavy configuration, it now operates on some of the airline's more business-focused regional routes, such as between Newark and Washington, D.C.

Five years later, Delta seems to agree that United's move is indeed one worth copying. There's no telling yet which routes Delta's CRJ-550 will fly, but the airline did confirm that the CRJ-550 will replace single-class regional jets.

"SkyWest is in the process of implementing the CRJ550 in its Delta Connection operations later this year. The two-class CRJ550 will be modified from SkyWest's existing fleet and will replace flying that was previously single-class to align with the Delta Connection experience customers have come to expect from Delta," Delta shared in a statement.

As Delta leans into its strategy of being the most premium U.S. airline, it makes sense for the airline to introduce the CRJ-550. The airline's mainline pilots might not love the move, but it's a win-win for passengers and the carrier.

Delta has the best first class, and Southwest has the best economy seats — see how airlines rank for customer satisfaction

  • Data analytics firm JD Power released its annual airline customer satisfaction study on Wednesday.
  • Delta rated best first/business and premium economy cabins. Southwest won for best economy cabin.
  • Overall, the study found traveler satisfaction driven most by desire for a safe and easy experience.

Insider Today

Delta Air Lines has reclaimed its crown as passengers' No. 1 pick for its first/business class , according to JD Power's newest airline rankings.

Delta regained the top spot after coming in second last year to JetBlue Airways. JetBlue fell to second place this year, followed by United Airlines.

JD Power released the annual North American Airline Satisfaction Study on Wednesday. It gauged consumer sentiment toward 11 major airlines in the US and Canada across three categories: first/business class, premium economy class, and economy/basic economy.

Delta's premium economy class claimed the top spot for the second year in a row, with Alaska Airlines in second place and American Airlines in third. Last year's runner's up, JetBlue, dropped to fourth place.

Southwest Airlines took top honors in the economy/basic economy segment for the third consecutive year, followed by Delta for the second year in a row. Allegiant Air finished in third place, up three spots from last year.

Air Canada, on the other hand, ranked last in customer satisfaction in the first/business class and premium economy categories. For the second consecutive year, Frontier Airlines finished last in the economy/basic economy segment with Spirit Airlines ranked one spot ahead.

JD Power also highlighted some other takeaways from the survey — specifically, how staffing and media attention can influence airline rankings .

"The big takeaway from this year's study is the power of people to positively influence the overall flight experience," said JD Power senior managing director Michael Taylor in a statement."Airlines that are investing in staff training and recruitment are finding ways to overcome the negative effects of crowded gates and planes simply by being nice to their customers."

The study also found that trust and ease of travel have superseded price as key driving factors for consumer satisfaction. According to JD Power, what's most important to customers, beyond the cost of a ticket, is simply to have a safe, drama-free flight .

Media coverage can significantly affect consumer trust in airlines, as well, the survey found. JD Power said consumers who reported seeing negative media coverage of an airline rated it much lower than others in terms of trust.

JD Power's 2024 study is based on responses from 9,582 passengers who had flown on a major North American airline within the previous month of completing the survey, which was conducted between March 2023 and March 2024.

Here's a closer look at how the 11 major North American airlines fared in each segment of the study.

Police recover SUV stolen while a baby was in the back seat

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) - Police in Des Moines, Iowa, have arrested a suspect accused of stealing an SUV with a baby in the back seat.

Corey Van, 32, is now facing theft and child neglect charges.

The frightening situation started in an instant.

“Parents stepped away for a second. Somebody jumped in the car and took it,” Sgt. Paul Parizek, with the Des Moines Police Department, said.

Audio recording from dispatch describes the moments right after.

“Caller stated that they were inside the building here and somebody took off with their black Mercedes with a baby in the back seat,” the dispatcher can be heard saying.

The intense worry of a mother whose child was missing was matched by the intensity of the police looking to find the baby and the vehicle.

“This one went on a little longer than most of us are comfortable with,” Parizek said.

Police said situations like this are not common and usually end fairly quickly.

They used every resource they could to locate the stolen SUV, including technology that certainly helped save the day.

Police officers were able to get eyes on the vehicle by pinging a phone that was inside the stolen car.

“Fortunately, the child is well,” Parizek said. “And that’s the best news we got.”

A group of people, who were on the scene comforting the mom and baby, said they are grateful for the happy ending and thank the Des Moines Police Department.

Air Force instructor pilot killed when ejection seat activated on the ground

FILE -- This image provided by the U.S. Air Force shows a U.S. Air Force T-6A Texan II taxiing...

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Air Force instructor pilot was killed when the ejection seat activated while the jet was still on the ground at a Texas military base, the Air Force said Tuesday.

The instructor pilot was in a T-6A Texan II at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, when the seat activated during ground operations on Monday. The pilot was taken to a hospital and died Tuesday, the Air Force said. The pilot’s name was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The T-6A Texan II is a single-engine two-seater aircraft that serves as a primary trainer for Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps pilots. In a training flight, an instructor can sit in the front or back seat; both have lightweight Martin-Baker ejection seats that are activated by a handle on the seat.

In 2022, the T-6 fleet and hundreds of other Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps jets were grounded after inspections revealed a potential defect with one component of the ejection seat’s cartridge actuated devices, or CADs. The fleet was inspected and in some instances, the CADs were replaced.

When activated the cartridge explodes and starts the ejection sequence.

Ejection seats have been credited with saving pilots’ lives, but they also have failed at critical moments in aircraft accidents. Investigators identified ejection seat failure as a partial cause of an F-16 crash that killed 1st Lt. David Schmitz, 32, in June 2020.

In 2018, four members of a B-1 bomber crew earned the Distinguished Flying Cross when, with their aircraft on fire, they discovered one of the four ejection seats was indicating failure. Instead of bailing out, all of the crew decided to remain in the burning aircraft and land it so they all would have the best chance of surviving. All of the crew survived.

Officials: Man arrested for allegedly decapitating dog he just adopted, dumping it in park

Police in Florida said they arrested a man who bought a dog and decapitated it.

ST> PETERSBURG, Fla. (TMX) -- A Florida man was arrested this week after a dog he adopted just days earlier was found decapitated and wrapped in a plastic bag in park, authorities said.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a report of a deceased dog wrapped in a plastic bag in the area of East Beach at Fort Desoto Park, south of St. Petersburg on Mullet Key, at around 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

Deputies arrived to find “a male bulldog mix with its head decapitated, floating in the mangroves.”

The dog was implanted with a microchip, which was scanned by Pinellas County Animal Services, revealing him to be a 4-year-old named Dexter. The dog had been adopted from Pinellas County Animal Services just days earlier, on May 10, by 66-year-old Domingo R. Rodriguez.

Deputies visited Rodriguez’s residence, where he admitted adopting Dexter and said he must have run away overnight on May 10. Rodriguez also admitted to traveling to Fort Desoto Park on May 11, however, and gave investigators “several inconsistent statements.”

Rodriguez was arrested and charged with one count of animal cruelty and one count of disposal of bodies of dead animals.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing.

It means the seat isn't available. Could be anything from being held for later sale, a broken seat, etc. Blocked. Saving it for flexibility and special purpose. On the legs that I fly, these seats, especially in the back of the plane, are reserved for crew. The person in that seat is dead.
