The short answer is yes, your IP address can change when you connect to a different WiFi network. Each WiFi network has its own unique set of IP addresses assigned to it by the Internet Service Provider (ISP). So, when you switch from one network to another, your device is assigned a new IP address specific to that network.

To better understand this concept, imagine you're sitting in a coffee shop, sipping on your favorite latte. You're connected to their WiFi network, and your device is assigned an IP address by the coffee shop's ISP. Now, if you decide to leave and head to a friend's house, you'll connect to their WiFi network, which has a different set of IP addresses assigned to it.

Consequently, your device will acquire a new IP address associated with your friend's network.

But what if you want to change your IP address to another country without using a VPN? Is it possible? The answer is a bit more complex. Changing your IP address to another country without using a VPN is challenging because your IP address is primarily determined by your physical location.

One workaround is to use a proxy server located in the country you wish to appear from. by routing your internet traffic through the proxy server, websites and online services will see the ip address of the proxy server instead of your actual ip address. this technique can give the impression that your ip address has changed to another country.

To better grasp this concept, picture yourself as a digital traveler. You're physically in your hometown but want to access content restricted to a different country. By using a proxy server located in that country, it's like teleporting your virtual presence to that specific location, enabling you to bypass geographical limitations.

When you switch wifi networks, your ip address does change. however, changing your ip address to another country without a vpn is a bit more complex, but using a proxy server can help achieve a similar effect. so, whether you're hopping from one wifi network to another or virtually teleporting across borders, understanding how ip addresses work can empower you to navigate the digital world with ease.

Can Your IP Address Be Traced on Wi-Fi?

Have you ever wondered if your IP address can be traced while connected to Wi-Fi? The answer is yes, it is possible for your IP address to be traced on Wi-Fi networks. However, the extent to which your IP address can be traced depends on various factors, including the security measures in place on the Wi-Fi network and the techniques used by those attempting to trace the IP address.

When you connect to a Wi-Fi network, your device is assigned an IP address, which is a unique identifier that allows devices to communicate with each other over the network. This IP address can be used to track your online activities and potentially identify your physical location.

While it is technically possible for someone to trace your IP address on a Wi-Fi network, it is important to note that this does not mean they can easily identify you personally. In order to identify an individual based on an IP address, additional information and legal processes would typically be required.

To protect your privacy and prevent your IP address from being traced, there are a few steps you can take. One option is to use a virtual private network (VPN), which encrypts your internet connection and masks your IP address. Another option is to change your IP address to another country without using a VPN.

Changing your IP address to another country without a VPN can be done through various methods, such as using a proxy server or a Tor network. These methods can help disguise your online identity and make it more difficult for someone to trace your IP address.

It is worth noting that while changing your IP address can provide some level of anonymity, it is not foolproof. Sophisticated tracing techniques and tools exist that can still potentially identify your online activities, even if you have changed your IP address.

While it is possible for your ip address to be traced on wi-fi networks, there are measures you can take to protect your privacy and make it more difficult for others to track your online activities. using a vpn or changing your ip address to another country without a vpn are options to consider, but it is important to remember that no method is completely foolproof.

it is always advisable to remain cautious and mindful of your online activities to minimize the risk of your ip address being traced.

How Do I Manually Set an IP Address?

The process of manually setting an ip address and changing it to another country without a vpn is not for the faint of heart. while it's theoretically possible, the risks and complexities involved make it an endeavor best left to experts. for most individuals, a vpn is still the go-to solution for accessing geo-restricted content and ensuring online privacy.

Do IP Addresses Differ by Country?

IP addresses play a crucial role in identifying and locating devices on the internet. They are unique numerical labels assigned to each device connected to a network. While IP addresses are generally assigned based on the geographical location of the device, it is essential to understand that they do not inherently differ by country.

In most cases, internet service providers (ISPs) allocate IP addresses based on the region in which the device is located. This means that devices within a specific country will likely have IP addresses from the same range. However, it is important to note that IP addresses can be reassigned, and ISPs have the flexibility to allocate addresses from different ranges to devices within their network.

The allocation of IP addresses is primarily governed by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) and regional registries such as the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) and the Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC). These organizations manage the distribution and assignment of IP addresses globally. They allocate IP address blocks to ISPs, who then distribute them among their customers.

While IP addresses themselves do not differ by country, they can provide information about the device's location. Geolocation databases maintain records associating IP addresses with specific countries. These databases are often used to determine the approximate location of a device based on its IP address.

However, it is important to recognize that geolocation is not always accurate and can be influenced by various factors, including the use of virtual private networks (VPNs) and proxy servers.

Changing your IP address to another country without a VPN can be a challenging task. VPNs are widely used to mask the original IP address and route internet traffic through servers in different countries. However, if you are looking for alternative methods, there are a few options to consider.

  • Proxy Servers: Proxy servers act as intermediaries between your device and the internet. By connecting to a proxy server in another country, your IP address appears to originate from that location. However, it is important to note that the use of free proxy servers can pose security risks, so caution is advised.
  • Tor Network: The Tor network, also known as The Onion Router, allows users to browse the internet anonymously. It routes your internet traffic through a series of volunteer-operated servers, making it difficult for anyone to trace your IP address. However, the Tor network can be slower than traditional internet connections.
  • Mobile Hotspots: If you have access to a mobile hotspot, you can connect your device to it and use the internet provided by the mobile network. This can give you a different IP address associated with the country where the mobile network operates.
  • Changing DNS Settings: DNS (Domain Name System) translates domain names into IP addresses. By changing the DNS settings in your device's network configuration, you can use DNS servers located in different countries. This can help you access region-specific content and potentially change the IP address used for internet connections.

It is important to note that while these methods may help change your IP address to another country, they may not provide the same level of privacy and security as a VPN. Additionally, some services and websites may employ advanced techniques to detect and block IP address manipulation.

How to Reset IP Address?

Are you tired of being limited by regional restrictions when browsing the internet? Do you want to access content that is only available in other countries? Changing your IP address to another country can be a game-changer. In this article, we will explore different methods to reset your IP address and access content from around the world, all without the need for a VPN.

Method 1: Using a Proxy Server

One way to change your IP address to another country is by using a proxy server. A proxy server acts as an intermediary between your device and the internet. By connecting to a proxy server located in a different country, you can mask your IP address and appear as if you are browsing from that country.

For example, imagine you are a fan of Japanese anime and want to watch a new episode that is only available in Japan. By connecting to a Japanese proxy server, you can bypass any regional restrictions and enjoy the content from the comfort of your own home.

Method 2: Using Tor

Another method to change your IP address without VPN is by using Tor (The Onion Router). Tor is a network of volunteer-operated servers that allows you to browse the internet anonymously. By routing your internet traffic through multiple layers of encryption, Tor can hide your IP address and make it appear as if you are browsing from a different country.

It's important to note that using tor may slow down your internet connection due to the added encryption and routing. additionally, some websites may block access from tor exit nodes, limiting your ability to access certain content.

Method 3: Changing Network Settings

If you are looking for a more technical approach, you can change your IP address by modifying your network settings. By accessing your router's settings, you can change the IP address assigned to your device. However, this method requires some technical knowledge and may not be suitable for everyone.

Before attempting to change your IP address using this method, it's essential to research and understand the specific steps for your router model. Incorrectly modifying network settings can result in a loss of internet connectivity.

Changing your ip address to another country without a vpn is possible using methods such as proxy servers, tor, or modifying network settings. while these methods offer an alternative to vpns, they may have limitations and require some technical knowledge. before attempting any changes, it's important to consider the legal and ethical implications and ensure that you are using these methods responsibly and within the boundaries of the law.

so go ahead, explore the world wide web without borders and unlock a new realm of online content!

Does IP Address Change with Location or Device?

The question of whether an IP address changes with location or device is a common one in the world of technology. Some argue that the IP address remains the same regardless of location or device, while others believe that it can change depending on these factors. Let's explore both viewpoints and shed some light on this topic.

Viewpoint 1: IP Address Remains the Same

One school of thought suggests that an IP address is tied to a specific device rather than a location. According to this viewpoint, when you connect to the internet using a different device, your IP address stays the same. This argument is based on the idea that an IP address is essentially an identifier for a device, allowing it to communicate with other devices on the internet.

Consider a scenario where you switch from using your laptop to your smartphone to access the internet. Proponents of this viewpoint would argue that your IP address remains constant throughout this transition. This consistency is attributed to the fact that the IP address is assigned to your device, not the location you are accessing the internet from.

Viewpoint 2: IP Address Can Change with Location or Device

On the other hand, there are those who believe that an IP address can change with both location and device. This viewpoint suggests that your IP address is assigned by your internet service provider (ISP) and is influenced by the location from which you connect to the internet. When you switch devices or connect from a different location, your ISP assigns a new IP address.

To illustrate this viewpoint, imagine you are traveling abroad and connect to the internet using a local Wi-Fi network. Advocates of this perspective would argue that your IP address changes to reflect the location you are in. Similarly, if you switch from using your home computer to a mobile device, your ISP may assign a different IP address.

The question of whether an ip address changes with location or device is not easily answered. both viewpoints have their merits, and the reality may vary depending on various factors such as the isp's policies and network configurations. however, it is important to note that changing your ip address can be beneficial in certain situations, such as accessing region-locked content or enhancing online privacy.

If you're looking to change your IP address to another country without using a virtual private network (VPN), there are alternative methods available. These methods often involve using proxy servers or Tor networks to route your internet traffic through different servers, effectively masking your IP address. Keep in mind that these methods may have limitations and may not provide the same level of security and privacy as a VPN.

In the end, whether your IP address changes with location or device, it's essential to understand the potential implications and use the appropriate tools or techniques to suit your specific needs.

Potential Risks and Considerations

When changing your IP address without using a VPN, there are potential risks and considerations to be aware of. Here are some main concerns about changing your IP address by other means:

  • Online activity monitoring : ISPs, or Internet Service Providers, can monitor your online activities by tracking your IP address. Without the protection of a VPN, your browsing habits and data remain visible to your ISP.
  • Hackers and cybercriminals : Accessing the internet without a VPN leaves your data vulnerable to hackers and other nefarious individuals. They can exploit your connection to steal sensitive information or infiltrate your devices.
  • Internet censorship : In some countries, internet content is regulated by the government, restricting access to specific websites or types of content. Without a VPN, you might not be able to bypass these restrictions.

Changing your IP address without using a VPN might seem like a good idea, but there are some precautions you should take to protect your online privacy . One way to do so is by tweaking your router’s settings. Changing the DNS settings or disabling UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) can enhance your security.

Another option is using a proxy server to mask your IP address and hide your online activities. However, there are security risks associated with using public proxies, as they may be compromised.

Also keep in mind that there is an increased risk of data breach when using these alternative methods, unlike VPNs, which encrypt your data. Secure your home network by changing the default password on your router and updating the firmware regularly.

To sum it up, while it is possible to change your IP address without a VPN, be aware of the potential risks and weigh them against the benefits. Stay vigilant when it comes to online privacy, and always consider the safest and most reliable methods for protecting yourself and your data.

Alternative Methods to Preserve Online Privacy

As someone who values online privacy, I understand the need to protect my IP address. While VPNs are a popular choice, there are other alternatives that can help you maintain your online privacy.

One effective approach is using a proxy server. A proxy server acts as an intermediary between your device and the websites you visit. It can mask your IP address by forwarding your internet traffic through a different IP address, allowing you to browse the web anonymously. Websites will only see the IP address of the proxy server, not your actual one.

I also appreciate the added layer of privacy provided by the Tor browser. Tor is a free, open-source platform that encrypts your internet traffic multiple times and routes it through a network of volunteer-operated servers. This process makes it difficult for online trackers to identify and monitor your digital activities.

In situations where I must use a public Wi-Fi network, I always exercise caution. Public Wi-Fi networks are usually unencrypted, which means hackers can intercept your data. To protect your online privacy on public Wi-Fi, disable file sharing, use HTTPS websites whenever possible, and make sure your device’s antivirus software is up-to-date.

In addition to these methods, here are some other steps I take to ensure my online privacy:

  • Reset my router periodically, as this may assign me a new IP address from my ISP’s pool.
  • Contact my internet service provider (ISP) to request an IP address change, if needed.
  • Use my mobile data connection instead of Wi-Fi when traveling or accessing sensitive information, since mobile networks provide a separate IP address.

By implementing these strategies, I am able to maintain my online privacy without relying solely on a VPN. It’s important to stay informed and vigilant in order to protect ourselves from potential threats in the digital world.

how-to-hide-my-ip-address-without-vpn

Introduction

Protecting your online privacy and anonymity has become increasingly important in today’s digital age. One effective way to safeguard your identity is by hiding your IP address. Your IP address is a unique identifier that reveals your location and online activity to websites and other online entities. By masking your IP address, you can browse the internet more securely and anonymously.

While using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is one popular method to hide your IP address, there are alternative approaches that you can consider. These methods are especially useful if you need a quick solution or prefer not to use a VPN for various reasons.

In this article, we will explore different methods to hide your IP address without using a VPN. Whether you’re concerned about privacy, want to access geo-restricted content, or simply curious about securing your online presence, these methods can help keep your identity hidden while browsing the internet.

It’s important to note that each method has its own advantages and limitations. You should select the method that best suits your needs and take precautions to ensure the security of your online activities.

Now, let’s take a closer look at these methods and how you can hide your IP address without relying on a VPN. Whether you’re a tech-savvy individual or a beginner, there’s a method for everyone to explore.

Method 1: Using a Proxy Server

A proxy server acts as an intermediary between your device and the websites you visit. It can mask your IP address by forwarding your internet traffic through a different IP address. This allows you to browse the web anonymously as websites only see the IP address of the proxy server, not your actual IP address.

Here’s how you can use a proxy server to hide your IP address:

  • Search for a reliable proxy server. There are many free and paid proxy services available online.
  • Select a proxy server from the options provided. Look for one that offers secure and anonymous browsing.
  • Configure your web browser to use the proxy server. This can usually be done in the settings or options menu of your browser.
  • Once the proxy server is set up, visit a website that displays your IP address. You can easily find such websites by searching “What is my IP address” on a search engine.
  • Check the displayed IP address. It should be different from your actual IP address, indicating that the proxy server is successfully hiding your IP.

Using a proxy server can be a quick and easy method to hide your IP address. However, it’s important to choose a reputable proxy server that prioritizes privacy and security. Free proxy servers may come with limitations or intrusive ads, so consider opting for a paid service if you require consistent and reliable protection.

Remember that while using a proxy server can hide your IP address, it doesn’t encrypt your traffic like a VPN would. This means that your data may still be visible to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) or anyone monitoring the network. If you require enhanced security and privacy, consider using additional methods or opting for a VPN.

Now that you know how to use a proxy server to hide your IP address, let’s explore another method that can provide anonymity while browsing the web.

Method 2: Using Tor Browser

If you’re looking for an advanced and highly secure way to hide your IP address, the Tor Browser is an excellent option. Tor, short for The Onion Router, is a network of volunteer-operated servers that allows users to browse the internet anonymously.

Here’s how you can use Tor Browser to hide your IP address:

  • Download and install the Tor Browser from the official Tor Project website. It’s available for Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.
  • Launch the Tor Browser and wait for the connection to establish. This may take a few moments as the browser connects to the Tor network.
  • Once the connection is established, you can access the internet through the Tor network. The Tor Browser automatically routes your internet traffic through a series of encrypted relays, hiding your IP address in the process.
  • Use the Tor Browser like any other web browser to browse websites, access content, and communicate online. Keep in mind that Tor may slow down your browsing speed due to the multiple layers of encryption.
  • To verify that your IP address is hidden, visit a website that displays your IP address. You should see an IP address different from your actual one, indicating that your identity is protected.

It’s important to note that while using the Tor Browser provides a high level of anonymity, it may not be suitable for all online activities. Some websites may block access from Tor exit nodes, and certain functionalities, such as accessing streaming services, may not work as expected.

Additionally, it’s crucial to practice good online security habits while using Tor. Avoid downloading files from untrustworthy sources and be cautious when sharing personal information online. Tor can protect your IP address, but it doesn’t provide full protection against malware or other online threats.

If you prioritize anonymity and are willing to tolerate slower browsing speeds, the Tor Browser is a powerful tool for hiding your IP address and maintaining your privacy while online.

Now that you know how to use the Tor Browser to hide your IP address, let’s explore another method that can provide similar results.

Method 3: Using a Web-based Proxy

If you’re looking for a quick and convenient way to hide your IP address without the need for installations or configurations, using a web-based proxy can be a suitable choice. These online proxy services allow you to access websites anonymously by rerouting your internet traffic through their servers.

Follow these steps to use a web-based proxy:

  • Search for a reputable web-based proxy service. There are many available online.
  • Visit the website of the web-based proxy service you’ve chosen.
  • Locate the input field on the proxy website where you can enter the URL of the website you want to access anonymously.
  • Enter the URL of the website and click on the “Go” or “Browse” button.
  • The web-based proxy will retrieve the content of the desired website and display it to you while hiding your IP address.

Using a web-based proxy can be a convenient option when you want to quickly access a specific website without revealing your IP address. However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. First, not all websites may work correctly with web-based proxies, especially those with advanced security measures in place. Second, the reliability and privacy of web-based proxies can vary, so choose a reputable and trusted service.

Furthermore, since the web-based proxy acts as a middleman between you and the destination website, be cautious when providing any sensitive information while using this method. It’s always recommended to avoid entering personal data or login credentials when using a proxy service.

Now that you’re familiar with using a web-based proxy to hide your IP address, let’s explore another method that can provide alternative ways to protect your online identity.

Method 4: Changing DNS Settings

Changing your DNS (Domain Name System) settings is another method you can utilize to hide your IP address. DNS is responsible for translating domain names into IP addresses, allowing you to access websites by typing in their names instead of their numerical IP addresses.

Here’s how you can change your DNS settings to hide your IP address:

  • Open the network settings on your device. This can usually be found in the system settings or control panel.
  • Locate the DNS settings or DNS server settings.
  • Configure your DNS settings by entering the IP address of a specific DNS provider or opting for a public DNS service like Google DNS or Cloudflare DNS.
  • Save the changes and exit the settings.

Changing your DNS settings can potentially hide your IP address by directing your internet traffic through a different DNS server. However, it’s important to note that this method may not provide complete anonymity, as your internet service provider can still monitor your online activities.

In addition to potentially hiding your IP address, changing your DNS settings can also offer other benefits such as improved browsing speed, enhanced security, and access to region-blocked content. However, keep in mind that changing your DNS settings may not always work as intended, and it might be necessary to revert to your default settings if you encounter connection issues.

Before making any changes to your DNS settings, it’s advisable to research reliable DNS providers and understand the potential implications. Additionally, regularly checking for updates and security patches for your DNS settings can help maintain the integrity of your online presence.

Now that you know how to change your DNS settings to potentially hide your IP address, let’s explore another method that can help you achieve anonymity while browsing the internet.

Method 5: Using the IP Address of a Different Device on the Same Network

If you’re connected to a local network, such as a home or office network, you can utilize the IP address of another device on the same network to hide your own IP address. This method can be useful if you want to maintain your privacy within a closed network environment.

Here’s how you can use the IP address of a different device on the same network to hide your IP:

  • Identify a device on the local network whose IP address you wish to use.
  • Access the network settings on your device. This can usually be found in the system settings or control panel.
  • Configure your network settings by manually entering the IP address of the chosen device.

By substituting your own IP address with that of another device on the same network, you effectively mask your real IP address while browsing the internet. However, it’s important to keep in mind that this method only provides privacy within the local network and does not protect your IP address from external entities or websites.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that using the IP address of another device on the same network may temporarily disrupt network connectivity for that device. This method should be used with caution and with the consent of the device owner.

Remember, while this method may offer some level of IP address anonymity within a closed network, it is not a foolproof solution. If you require stronger anonymity or need to hide your IP address from external entities, consider using other methods like proxy servers, VPNs, or the Tor Browser.

Now that you know how to use the IP address of a different device on the same network to potentially hide your IP, let’s explore another method that can offer additional layers of anonymity.

Method 6: Using a Public Wi-Fi Network

Using a public Wi-Fi network can be another effective method to hide your IP address. When you connect to a public Wi-Fi network, your internet traffic is routed through the network’s IP address rather than your own. This can help conceal your identity and make it more difficult for websites to track your online activities.

Here’s how you can use a public Wi-Fi network to hide your IP address:

  • Find a trusted public Wi-Fi network to connect to. This can be a coffee shop, library, restaurant, or any other establishment that offers free or paid Wi-Fi access.
  • Enable Wi-Fi on your device and select the appropriate network from the available options.
  • Connect to the selected Wi-Fi network by entering any required login credentials or following the provided instructions.
  • Once connected, your device will be assigned an IP address from the public Wi-Fi network, effectively hiding your own IP address.

While using a public Wi-Fi network can provide IP address anonymity, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks involved. Public Wi-Fi networks are often targeted by hackers and malicious actors, who may attempt to intercept your data or gain unauthorized access to your device. To mitigate these risks, consider following these best practices:

  • Avoid accessing sensitive or personal information while connected to a public Wi-Fi network.
  • Ensure that the Wi-Fi network you are connecting to is legitimate and secure.
  • Use a reliable and up-to-date antivirus or security software on your device.
  • Consider using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) in conjunction with the public Wi-Fi network for an added layer of security and privacy.

Keep in mind that while using a public Wi-Fi network can hide your IP address, it does not secure your internet traffic or protect against other types of online threats. It’s crucial to exercise caution and take necessary precautions when using public Wi-Fi networks.

Now that you know how to use a public Wi-Fi network to potentially hide your IP address, let’s explore another method that can help you achieve anonymity while browsing the internet.

Method 7: Disconnect and Reconnect Your Internet Connection

If you are looking for a simple and quick method to potentially hide your IP address, you can try disconnecting and reconnecting your internet connection. This can help assign you a new IP address from your Internet Service Provider (ISP), effectively concealing your previous IP address.

Here’s how you can try disconnecting and reconnecting your internet connection to hide your IP address:

  • Locate the network icon in your system tray or taskbar.
  • Right-click on the network icon and select “Disconnect” or a similar option.
  • Wait for a few moments, then right-click on the network icon again and select “Connect” or a similar option to reconnect to the internet.

By disconnecting and reconnecting your internet connection, your ISP will assign you a new IP address. This can help mask your real IP address and provide a temporary layer of anonymity while browsing the internet.

While this method may work in some cases, it’s important to note that the effectiveness of hiding your IP address through this method can vary. Some ISPs may assign you the same IP address after reconnecting, while others may provide a different one. Additionally, this method does not provide encryption or secure your internet traffic, so it’s advisable to use additional methods like a VPN for enhanced privacy and security.

If you are looking for a more reliable and long-term solution to hide your IP address, consider exploring other methods mentioned in this article, such as using a proxy server, the Tor Browser, or changing your DNS settings.

Now that you know how to potentially hide your IP address by disconnecting and reconnecting your internet connection, let’s summarize what we have learned so far.

Hiding your IP address is an essential step to protect your online privacy and maintain anonymity while browsing the internet. While VPNs are commonly used for this purpose, there are alternative methods that can help you achieve the same results without relying on a VPN.

In this article, we explored several methods to hide your IP address without using a VPN. These methods included using a proxy server, utilizing the Tor Browser, leveraging web-based proxies, changing your DNS settings, using the IP address of a different device on the same network, connecting to a public Wi-Fi network, and disconnecting and reconnecting your internet connection.

Each method has its own advantages and limitations. Proxy servers and web-based proxies provide a quick and easy way to hide your IP address, but they may not offer the same level of security and privacy as a VPN. The Tor Browser, on the other hand, provides advanced anonymity by routing your internet traffic through a network of encrypted relays.

Changing your DNS settings or using the IP address of another device on the same network can provide temporary IP address anonymity within a closed network environment. Connecting to a public Wi-Fi network can also help hide your IP address, but it comes with potential risks and requires caution to maintain security.

Lastly, disconnecting and reconnecting your internet connection can assign you a new IP address, giving you temporary anonymity. However, the effectiveness of this method may vary, and it does not provide encryption or secure your internet traffic.

It’s important to choose the method that best suits your needs and take additional precautions to ensure your online security and privacy. Consider combining different methods or opting for a VPN for a more comprehensive solution.

Remember, while these methods can help hide your IP address, they do not guarantee complete anonymity or protection from all online threats. It’s always advisable to practice safe browsing habits, use strong passwords, keep your devices and software up to date, and be cautious when sharing personal information online.

By implementing these methods and maintaining a proactive approach to online privacy, you can enjoy a more secure and anonymous browsing experience.

How-To Geek

How to change your ip address.

Need to fix networking issues? Changing your IP address should help.

Quick Links

Why would you want to change your ip address, static vs. dynamic ips: should you get a static address instead, key takeaways.

The simplest way to change your IP address is to power off your router, wait at least 10 seconds, then power it back on. If that doesn't fix your problem, you may want to set a static IP address instead.

Changing your IP address is a simple fix for a number of networking issues. However, there's more than one way to cook that particular egg. So let's go over your options for getting a new IP address, and why you'd choose one over the other.

Your  IP address is a set of numbers that works both as a way to locate you in the real world as well as serves as your digital address. When you connect to the internet, for example, your internet service provider or ISP will assign you an IP that will reveal to the sites you visit where you're connecting from---it's why sites will usually change language when you're accessing them from abroad.

Changing your network IP will make you appear like you're somewhere else, great for circumventing censorship blocks or even changing your Netflix library to that of another country. However, that's not possible without using outside help, so to speak. You'll usually have to use a third-party program to alter your IP that way, and it only works while that program is active.

There are a few ways to temporarily change your IP like this, we discuss them at length in our article on how to hide your IP address . In most cases, your best bet is to use a virtual private network (VPN) to fake your IP and thus make it appear that you're somewhere else. It's pretty cool, and easy to do.

However, it's not just your internet connection that broadcasts an IP address: each device you own also has its own, unique IP. This is so each device can properly communicate with both the network and each other.

If there's a problem with your network's IP or that of a specific device, they may not connect properly or have some other issues. A VPN won't fix these problems, at least not for the long-term; the only way to get rid of these issues is to permanently change your IP address. Luckily, this isn't that hard to do.

The first way to fix any issues is to change your network's IP. This is a lot easier than you may think thanks to something called the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol . DHCP is a protocol---a set of rules that governs how machines "talk" to each other---which can change the IP address associated on the fly, hence "dynamic."

To do so, all you really need to do is turn your router off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it on again . (Simply resetting usually doesn't work, but it depends very much on the router.) Once the router is fully on and working again, you should have a new IP address.

You can, of course, check to make sure. To do so, before you switch off the router, find your IP address either by asking your favorite search engine what it is or using a tool like IPleak.net . Write down the IP, switch your router on and off, and then check again.

However, the above fix is a short-term one that mainly only works if you have a simple issue, like if your router suddenly starts acting up. If you have permanent networking issues with your devices, you may have to throw out DHCP altogether and instead set up a static IP address, one that doesn't change.

Setting a static IP address will hopefully get rid of any networking issues, or at least narrow down the list of possible causes for why your devices aren't talking to each other. That said, there are a few different ways to tackle this issue.

First off, you could reach out to your ISP and simply ask them to change your IP address. You'll probably have to explain what the issue is and walk through a few steps with them---this really depends on your ISP---but if the tech is worth their salt, they'll take care of it for you.

Manually Set a Static IP Address

However, that may not be necessary: there are plenty of ways you can track down and fix any issues yourself, starting with changing your router's IP to static. We have a full tutorial on how to set a static IP on your router , and this should hopefully change any issues you have on the network level.

That said, it could be your laptop or desktop causing the issues. In that case, you could try setting a static IP on your Windows computer ---or, if you prefer, using the Windows command prompt . Members of Team Penguin can check out this tutorial on how to set a static IP in Ubuntu . It's also worth noting that  iPhones have a built-in function for changing IPs and setting static ones too .

Whichever route you end up taking, with a few minutes of work your networking issues should be a thing of the past.

  • You can use VPN apps to spoof your location on any browser.
  • If you wish to spoof your location only on a single browser, install and use VPN extensions.
  • Block websites from accessing your location data by using Chrome, Edge, or Firefox browser’s Settings menu.

Method 1: Use a VPN to Fake Your Location in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox

VPN makes your private network truly private when you connect to its servers. This way others will only be able to see your location as whatever location’s server you’re currently connected to. So, let us have a look at how to connect to a VPN to change your IP address and fake your location.

Note: We will be using the free version of Proton VPN for demonstration purposes.

Step 1: Open the Proton VPN app and go to the location you want to connect to.

Go to the location you want to connect

Step 2: Then, click on Connect . Alternatively, you can also click on Quick Connect to let the Proton VPN decide the location and quickly connect to it.

Click on Connect or click on Quick Connect

You can also use VPN apps for Android and iOS to change or fake your location in the Chrome, Edge, and Firefox mobile apps. Your location will be visible once the VPN app is disconnected.

Tip: You can also check out our list of Android browsers that come with built-in VPN capabilities .

Method 2: Spoof Your Location Using an Extension

Using VPN extensions, you can easily change your location in Firefox, Chrome, or Edge, without affecting the rest of your device apps and services. They can be accessed from the browser’s menu options and don’t require a separate app. Here’s how to install the extensions on Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.

For Chrome and Edge

Note: The steps for installing an extension are similar in Microsoft Edge. So, open Edge and go to Free VPN for Edge’s page . Then, follow the below steps to install the extension.

Step 1: Open the Snap VPN page Chrome and click on Add to Chrome .

Click on Add to Chrome

Step 2: Here, click on Add extension to confirm.

Click on Add extension

Step 3: Once the extension is installed, click on the Extensions icon and click on Snap VPN .

Now, select the country you would like to connect to and wait for it to establish a connection. The CyberGhost VPN extension will show a disconnect option once the VPN connection is successful.

Method 3: Use Browser Settings to Spoof Current Location

You can also change your browser location using the browser settings. However, certain apps can still pick up on your changed location while others might show your location as unknown. Although it’s not a foolproof method, you can give it a go if you want to mask your immediate location data. Here’s how.

Note: Closing the browser windows will result in your true location being revealed.

Note: The method for changing location using the settings menu is the same for Chrome and Edge. So, for demonstration, we will be using Chrome.

Step 1: Open Google Chrome and click on the three-dot icon . Here, click on More tools and then, click on Developer tools .

Open Menu & open Developer tools

Step 2: Now, in the developer console menu, click on the three-dot icon on the right. Then, go to More tools and select Sensors .

Note: Edge users can click on the + icon from the bottom and click on Sensors .

From Menu open More tools & click on Sensors

Step 3: Here, click on the No override dropdown and select any of the pre-fed locations. Or, you can add longitude and latitude coordinates to manually select the desired location.

Open dropdown and select location

Step 1: Open Firefox , type about:config in the address bar, and press enter . When prompted, click on Accept the Risk and Continue .

Open about config & click on accept risk

Step 2: Now, in the search bar, type geo.enabled and ensure it’s set to True .

Check geo.enabled value is True

Step 3: Then, type geo.provider.network.url in the search bar and click on the pencil icon .

Open geo urk page and click on the pencil icon

Step 4: Once the editing window opens, delete the previous text and add the following instead:

Note : This would change Firefox’s location to Times Square, New York. If you have any other specific location in mind, you can change the location coordinates accordingly.

Step 5: Once done, click on the tick icon .

Change the coordinates & click on the tick icon

Bonus: Disable Location Access Using Browser Settings

Apart from spoofing your location in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, you can also turn off location access so that apps are unable to access your current geolocation. While this will not make geo-restricted services available, it will ensure services don’t have access to your exact location data. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Open Chrome and click on the three-dot icon . Then, click on Settings .

Click on the three-dot icon & click on Settings

Step 2: From the menu tab, click on Privacy and security . Scroll down and click on Site settings .

Open Privacy settings & click on Site settings

Step 3: Here, go to the Permissions section and click on Location .

Click on Location

Step 4: Select the Don’t allow sites to see your location option.

Select Don’t allow sites to see your location

Additionally, if any site has been added as an exception, make sure to delete it as required. You can also check out our article to learn more about disabling or enabling location services in Google Chrome .

Step 1: Open Edge and click on the three-dot icon . Then, click on Settings .

Click on the three-dot icon & click on Settings

Step 2: From the menu sidebar, click on Cookies and site permissions . Scroll down and click on Location .

Open site permissions & click on Location

Step 3: Here, turn on the toggle for Ask before accessing .

This will ensure that sites ask you for permission every time before accessing your location data.

Step 1: Open Firefox and click on the three-dot icon . Then, click on Settings .

Click on the three-dot icon & click on Settings

Step 2: Here, click on Privacy & Security . Then, scroll down to Location and click on the Settings option in front of it.

Go to privacy settings & open Location settings

Step 3: Here, check the Block new requests asking to access your location option. Then, click on Save Changes .

Select the option & click on Save Changes

This will block websites from requesting your location in Firefox. You can also go through the websites that might have been added as the exception and delete them before saving the changes in Firefox.

How to Change Your IP Address to Another Country (Easy Ways)

This is an estimated reading time to let you know how long it will take you to read all the content on this particular PrivacySavvy.com page. However, it has a sneak peek, easy guide steps, and/or a quick list providing quick in-page navigations and easily-found answers if desired.

Need to unblock the internet or appear to be somewhere else than your actual location online? This article explains how you can change the IP country easily.

IP addresses are the exclusive numbers assigned to a particular device connected to the internet. Most authorities, websites, streaming sites, cyber-attackers, and third parties use this public identifier to extract your online details, especially your location. This information helps them know your coordinates, guess your location-based interests, and apply content restrictions. However, some effective workarounds are available today to help you change your IP country . The subsequent change of online location then enables you to experience safe, anonymous, private, and unrestricted internet browsing.

Tweaking your Internet Protocol address – The quick guide

Rushed? Here is how to change your IP country quickly:

  • Sign up for a reliable VPN , our privacy experts, or cybersecurity researchers (including me) a ll recommend ExpressVPN to be the best VPN for the cause (for multiple reasons).
  • Install the VPN app , if you went with ExpressVPN, it has an app for all the known devices which makes it very easy for you to get going.
  • Connect to a server available in the country of whom you want to get the IP address (for example, if you need a US IP outside it, you may connect to a US VPN server).
  • That is it, once connected to the selected VPN server, your country IP should already be changed.

How does an IP address work?

Like your physical address that leads anyone to your home, you also have an online address. The internet labels it as your IP address.

In technical terms, your IP address is a specific number assigned to your device as an online identifier .

Whether it is your mobile phone, your laptop, or any other device you access the internet, every device has a unique IP address that it receives from your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

The IP address isn’t just a random number; it encloses many more details.

This single resource lets anyone know about your device, network information, browsing habits, and exact physical location .

Whenever your device connects to the internet, this IP address is what the websites, advertisers, government authorities, and other online entities track about you.

But, if you know how to change the public IP address of your device, you may easily ditch all these trackers.

Similarly, your IP address lets the content providers decide their target audience .

That is why you see different kinds of news online from different places.

Likewise, you may not access BBC iPlayer outside the United Kingdom because the service provider tracks your location via IP address.

However, if you effectively change your IP to another country , you can bypass geo-restrictions and enjoy browsing freedom.

Reasons to change your IP address

Your IP address reveals not only your location but also a lot more details.

Perhaps, you cannot even imagine the extent of information you unknowingly disclose online through your IP.

Change IP address country

In short, your privacy and security are always at risk when your true IP is visible online.

So, it makes complete sense to mask or hide your IP address and protect yourself.

But if you wonder why exactly you or anyone else should do that, here are a few important reasons.

1. Browse websites anonymously

Ever wondered why you start seeing ads for products you bought or viewed right after you leave an e-store?

Or why do you see ads related to your purchases on your Facebook Newsfeed? This is because the websites track you!

Browse Websites Anonymously

You get information from that site and share yours with them because of advanced cookie tracking that businesses deploy today while visiting a website.

Almost every website has certain tracking elements that keep chasing you as you browse online. These trackers prey on your IP address, through which they get information about your device, location, network, and other devices connected to your network.

All this data suffices to let them have enough information about you. They can then use this data to show you relevant ads (whether you wish to view them or not).

Sometimes, these trackers are so robust that the websites you visit don’t let you in unless you turn off your ad-blocker . Ultimately, you are compelled to share your data with them.

Of course, you can’t stop the other side from spying on you.

But you can fake your online profile. Hence, changing the IP address country is the only viable solution for this tracking.

When websites can’t track your real IP, they can’t know your country, device, and other data.

In turn, you can enjoy anonymous browsing without worrying about online trackers.

2. Limit search engines from tracking your browsing history

For most of you, to ‘Google’ something is the easiest way to find anything.

But only a few people would realize that this seemingly harmless activity also shares your own data with Google.

Limit Search Engines from Tracking Your Browsing History

In fact, it is not about Google only. Rather, almost every search engine also loves to track what you do online.

These common search engines like Google and Bing build a profile of yourself based on your browsing habits.

They then use this data to adjust your search results for accuracy and ad targeting. Of course, they link all this data to your IP address and place cookies on your device.

If you don’t want these search engines to track you, delete cookies from your device and spoof your IP address.

However, we recommend using private search engines instead of Google and would like to eliminate this tracking issue for good. These search engines, like DuckDuckGo, respect your privacy.

3. Access content blocked at your place

Most schools block social media platforms and homework-help websites to avoid student distractions.

Access Content Blocked At Your Place

Likewise, employers also block social media like Facebook at the workplace to restrict employees from wasting time.

Some organizations doing sensitive work also block such platforms to avoid any sort of information leak.

While that is all rational to do, you may not always like such restrictions. (At least I don’t want to be restricted like this).

So, once again, you have a workaround for unblocking websites : to change your IP address.

Since the content restrictions are applied to the IP address assigned by the appropriate place’s network, once you spoof it for your device, you can bypass all such restrictions.

4. Bypass content geo-restrictions

Content restrictions based on location are another annoying thing in the online world.

Sometimes, the content providers restrict their audience to a specified location. Such as BBC iPlayer isn’t available outside the UK.

Bypass Content Georestrictions

Whereas in most cases, government authorities block various websites to limit their people from accessing certain information. This can be done to achieve various political or ethical gains. Anyhow, that’s not a part of our discussion.

Our point is that we, as free humans, reserve the right of freedom of online browsing (ethically).

So, if you are fed up with such geo-restrictions , know how to change the country’s IP to another one. This will lift any content blocking from you since your online location would appear differently from where you are present.

5. Use Netflix and other streaming services anywhere

Ever missed watching BBC iPlayer when you’re abroad ? Can’t watch your favorite Netflix show just because you traveled to another country?

Then, you surely need to change your IP address to a different country.

Unblock Netflix 600x300

Streaming platforms such as Netflix often have various geo-restrictions enabled on their content. This can either be a requirement from the media studios, or they have to block certain content in a region based on the media policies of that country.

Either way, it is you, the user, who suffers.

These services track your IP address to know your location and apply content restrictions.

So, as a workaround, simply change the IP country of your device to the one where the content you want to access is available.

Doing so would change your online location, and you can unblock Netflix USA and others similar as they won’t be able to track your exact location. Hence, you can continue to enjoy your favorite shows no matter where you are.

6. Evade government tracking and eavesdropping

Apart from content censorship, government authorities also frequently eavesdrop on you .

Although, the extent of this eavesdropping may be different.

Some countries like China and Iran are known for their extremely strict citizen tracking. Whereas the USA also frequently eavesdrop on users via their NSA .

Likewise, the government authorities in other countries also check their users’ online activities, whether they publicly disclose them or not.

These authorities precisely track your IP address to see what you do online. While that’s bad, what’s terrible and somewhat dangerous is how countries share citizens’ data.

Today, massive spying alliances, such as 5 Eyes and 9 Eyes , have made data sharing among the countries way easier.

Although that’s needed to contain criminal activities, this is also a breach of the privacy of common users.

However, if you know how to get a new IP address for your device, you can easily evade such eavesdropping .

7. Prevent your ISP from tracking You

Whether you use a private search engine, frequently clear your browsing history, or do anything to prevent online tracking, one such resource constantly keeps track of you. That is your Internet Service Provider (or the ISP) .

Your ISP has control of everything you do online. They log all your activities , even browsing, in incognito mode.

They then save them and share them with law enforcement and government authorities as and when needed.

While you can’t stop them from spying on you , you can certainly protect yourself by masking your public IP . Your ISP can only track you if you continue to browse with the IP address they provide.

But, if you get a fake country IP address , especially with a VPN that encrypts your data, your ISP won’t know anything about your online activities.

8. Stay out of the radar of hackers

Changing the IP address isn’t just required to protect your privacy but your security, too.

Like websites and government authorities, criminal hackers always look for your online information .

Stay Out of the Radar Of Hackers

In fact, they actually wait to spot your weaknesses, whether it is about the vulnerabilities in your device security system or your personal life.

Once they get a hint of your weak spot, they don’t waste a minute preying on you. They can then achieve long-term benefits, including financial gains from you.

From cyberbullying and identity theft to malware and ransomware attacks , you can’t even imagine the extent of threats you are exposed to while surfing online.

But you can certainly fend off all such threats simply by changing your IP.

As most black hat hackers trace your IP address to build your profile, changing this important detail makes them lose track.

They can’t link the false IP address to you or your device; hence, you remain safe. (Pretty simple!)

9. Safely use public WiFi

Public Wi Fis are a wonderful source to let you stay online always. Most of these are free to use, so they attract many users.

However, these public Wi Fi networks also serve as a safe haven for hackers since they can target multiple users.

Hide Your IP Address to Us a Public Wifi Safely 600x300

These WiFi networks are usually unsafe for performing sensitive activities, such as financial transactions.

However, since most users are unaware of it, they continue to browse online and log in to different accounts.

Thus, the hackers present on the network intercept your data transmitted online. They cannot only steal important information but also cause financial damage.

Like always, these perpetrators prey on your IP address to reach your device.

Hence, when you hide or change IP addresses, the hackers won’t be able to trace your device through false IPs. And so you can browse safely.

For enhanced online protection , you can use a VPN that masks your IP address and encrypts all your data.

10. Saving money on flight tickets

Many factors affect ticket prices, including your location. So, you can change your IP address to a less developed country to get a cheaper flight ticket . This is a great way to save money if you travel a lot.

4 methods to change IP country easily

Although, you may not change your physical address as frequently as you want. Except for a regular to and fro between your workplace and your home, you cannot really move your location all the time.

Fortunately, that is not the case with your internet address. You can, in fact, change the IP location of your device as many times as you want.

You can even change the IP address country and bluff all online trackers . Here, we list the most effective methods for it.

1. Use a VPN

A Virtual Private Network, or simply a VPN, is one of the most viable methods in which a VPN replaces your IP address with another country’s IP address.

Talking about the pros of VPNs , Besides masking your IP, a VPN encrypts all the data transmitted from your device.

Thus, you can rest assured that nobody can view or track your online work after intercepting your network.

Moreover, VPNs also provide a range of different IP addresses from across the world. Therefore, you can choose any location depending on the content you want to access.

For example, if you want access to BBC iPlayer, simply choose a UK server through your VPN, and that’s it.

Likewise, you can enjoy the content from Netflix USA from any part of the world simply by choosing a USA server.

Hide Your IP Address with a VPN 600x300

However, not  every VPN may work well with streaming services like Netflix .

In fact, Netflix frequently blocks VPNs, making it difficult for users to access them.

So, you should make sure that you use a robust VPN that evades Netflix blocking.

We recommend ExpressVPN . Installing it is also quite easy. It has a neat interface suitable even for an average user. Also, it supports multiple operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux.

Yet, before installing any VPN, make sure to go through their system requirements.

Also, look at their Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy, especially if you are concerned about data logging.

The only downside of using a VPN is that most good VPNs aren’t free.

However, if you want a VPN to change the IP address to a different country and have no problem with its average services or data logging, you can find some free VPNs here .

If you haven’t previously heard about VPNs or haven’t used one yet, please read our Ultimate Guide to VPNs for Beginners .

Benefits you get:

  • Wide range of locations to choose your IP from.
  • Multiple IP addresses globally.
  • Encrypted data transmission.
  • Fast upload and download.

2. Use Tor Browser

Another savvy option to change your IP address without hassle is changing your browser to the Tor browser.

From the makers of Mozilla Firefox, The Onion Router or TOR browser is powered by the TOR technology initially developed for the US military. So, you can imagine the level of safety and privacy this browser offers users.

Simply put, Tor masks your IP address , encrypts your data , and provides you with an anonymous browsing experience .

However, these features come with the downsides of slow browsing speeds . Hence, it isn’t wise to use Tor for video streaming.

Hide Your IP Address with TOR 600x300

A major problem with Tor is that it is a direct opening to the dark web – a hub for cybercriminals. That’s why law enforcement and ISPs actively track Tor users .

So, unless you are a privacy freak or an emerging hacker (it must be a white hat), you should better drop the idea of using Tor. Instead, you may use a VPN.

  • IP masking.
  • Free to use.
  • Onion encryption.

3. Use a Smart DNS

Like VPNs, you can also use a Smart DNS to change IP to Canada, the US, or any country you want. Apart from IP masking, it also offers fast browsing speed , making it perfect for streaming.

However, this speed isn’t advantageous because Smart DNS does not support data encryption . Therefore, whatever data your device transmits over the network remains visible.

That means  anyone intercepting your network can contact you despite a false IP address .

Hence, you can use a Smart DNS if you merely need to change your IP address without affecting speed. But if you’re concerned with privacy and data security, use a VPN.

Moreover, a VPN is still better than Smart DNS if you mask your IP address across multiple devices.

Another problem with Smart DNS comes for Netflix users. As we mentioned above, Netflix frequently blocks fake IP addresses . So, like most VPNs, it also blocks Smart DNS IPs.

Thus, if you want a great Netflix experience, I highly recommend using ExpressVPN only.

  • Fast upload and download speeds.

4. Use a Web Proxy

If you are unwilling to pay for a VPN or simply wish to temporarily switch IP locations on your device, use a web proxy.

Like a VPN, a free web proxy also masks your IP address. Moreover, it also lets you choose your desired country, similar to a VPN.

However, it lags behind a VPN because it does not encrypt your data – like a Smart DNS.

It means using a web proxy is just a quick option to change your online location and bypass content restrictions. The websites you visit might not directly link your IP with your device.

However, using a web proxy doesn’t make you entirely anonymous . And someone tracking your data (which remains unencrypted) can still figure out your browsing activities.

Moreover, not every web proxy service efficiently masks your IP address. Some robust websites can still restrict you from accessing their content if they detect your false IP address.

  • Faking IP address.

How to change your private IP address?

If you’re connected to a WiFi router, all devices in your network share a public IP address . However, each device has its unique private IP address.

Changing your private IP address has a minimal impact on your device’s interactions with other servers or devices. However, when configuring your household devices, such as IoT or printers, or troubleshooting errors, you might want to consider changing your private IP address .

Renew your local IP address

You can change your IP address directly from your device or via the router admin panel. Changing the private IP address varies based on the operating system of your device.

For your Windows devices, you can change your private IP address by following these steps:

  • Go to the command prompt .
  • Run as administrator by right-clicking it.
  • Type ipconfig/release .
  • Type ipconfig/renew .

Once done, a new local IP address should be displayed.

On your macOS device, use these steps:

  • Go to Apple Menu .
  • Click ‘ System Preferences .
  • Select ‘ Network’ and highlight the one you’re connected to.
  • Select ‘ Advanced.’
  • Select the ‘ TCP/IP tab.’
  • Choose ‘ Renew DHCP Lease.’

Your Mac device should now have a new private IP address. When changing your private IP address via your router, you should first access the router’s admin dashboard by keying in ‘192.168.0.1’ or ‘192.168.1.1’ in your web browser’s address bar. However, the specific process may vary depending on your router’s manufacturer and firmware .

How to choose the best VPNs to change your IP address

When selecting the best VPN to change your IP address, there are certain factors you should consider. These include:

  • VPN’s server network : The more extensive the network, the more likely the provider can offer you an IP address based in the country you need.
  • Speed : Fast download and streaming speeds are essential when unblocking geo-restricted content. You should avoid VPNs restricting user usage with data caps or network throttling.
  • Value for money : The worth of any VPN provider is determined by comparing its set of features to its subscription charges. If a VPN charges a premium price while lacking top security features, remove it from your list of considerations.
  • Ease of use : Using VPNs to change your IP address shouldn’t be rocket science. A good VPN should have a straightforward guide on how to set up and change your IP address. In addition, the VPN should have user-friendly apps.
  • Security and privacy : These are vital considerations when selecting a VPN service. Choosing a VPN that offers AES 256-bit encryption, a no-logs policy, an automatic kill switch, and other premium security features is essential. VPNs that provide extra features, such as malware and virus protection and ad-blocking, are even better.
  • Unblocking capabilities : Any VPN worth considering should offer reliable unblocking of streaming services. We recommend VPNs with top-notch unblocking abilities for streaming.
  • Compatibility : Good VPNs should support multiple platforms such as Android, iOS, Windows, Linux, routers, macOS, and smart TVs. This will give you a lot of flexibility when using the VPN.
  • Customer support : Choosing a VPN that has a reliable support team should be your priority. Always ensure the VPN has 24/7 support you can reach via live chat or email.

Can I change my IP address with a free VPN?

Using a free Virtual Private Network might be tempting, but we advise against doing so due to various reasons. First, free VPNs tend to attract too many users for their limited network resources to handle . For this reason, you might experience slow speeds, buffering, and even disconnections from the servers due to overcrowding.

Additionally, free VPNs are typically the first to be blocked by most providers , so there is a high likelihood that you might not access the services you want.

Rather than billing the user directly, free VPNs opt for other ways of making money. For instance, they might add target ads to web pages or promise higher speeds at a certain fee .

However, a key challenge is that some providers use shady tactics. For example, most of them store tracking cookies on your device to collect valuable consumer data that they then sell to third parties such as advertisers. These free services rob you of control over private information by doing. Therefore, using a premium VPN with a proven track record is the best way to protect yourself from online threats.

How to change your IP address in Windows 10

Changing your IP address doesn’t always require using a dedicated tool like VPN. Sometimes, you have to change your IP address manually.

How To Change Your IP Address In Windows 10

Especially large organizations that predominantly use Windows systems frequently require their employees to change IP addresses for various reasons.

For example, organizations may do so when they suffer IP blocklisting after mass emailing .

So, for all Windows 10 users, here we quickly explain how to change the IP address in Windows 10 .

  • On the bottom-right of your screen, right-click on the internet icon of your Windows computer.
  • Click on ‘ Open Network & Internet Settings .’
  • Scroll down your screen and click on the ‘ Network and Sharing Center .’
  • Now click on your internet connection, and then click on the ‘ Properties ’ button at the bottom.
  • On the new pop-up window, click the ‘Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP v4)’ option and again click ‘Properties.’ You can access the ‘Properties’ window by double-clicking the IPv4 address option.
  • Enter the desired IP address, the Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway details (if required).
  • Click ‘ OK . ’
  • And this is it. You are now connected to the internet with the new IP address.

How do I change my IP address on my mobile device?

You don’t need to be tech-savvy to change your IP address on your smartphone. These steps can help you tweak the IP address on your mobile device:

  • Select and sign up for a VPN discussed above.
  • Install the app using Google Play Store or App Store.
  • Launch the app.
  • Log in using your credentials.
  • Select a preferred server and connect .
  • Your IP address will change after a successful connection.

Way to change your router IP

Before wondering how to change the router’s IP address, let’s see how it works and why you should change its IP.

A router is a dedicated networking device that connects one or more devices to the internet . Most good routers support up to 5-10 devices at a time.

To manage these many connections, the router bears a public IP address , whilst all connected devices receive private IP addresses .

So, whenever you connect to the internet with a router, all your devices appear online with the public IP address .

For example, connecting your laptop and mobile phone to the internet via your router will have the same IP address. (To check this, simply type “my IP” in the search bar of your device’s browser. You will see your public IP address .)

Hence, if you wish to browse anonymously while connected to a router, you need to change the router’s IP address.

Here I list two different methods to change router IP.

Method 1: Restart your router

Most ISPs assign dynamic IP addresses. Hence, you can change your router’s IP address by turning it off for a minute and then turning it back on .

However, since the DHCP usually remembers the device, it may assign the same IP address to the router again.

In such cases, you should either try to restart your router multiple times.

Or, you may leave the router turned off overnight . The next morning, your router will likely have a new IP address.

Method 2: Reconnect to ISP via the router admin portal

If you know your router’s admin dashboard, try this method to change the IP address.

Simply log in to your router’s admin panel . Disconnect it from the upstream ISP and then reconnect . You will now get a new public IP address.

Most vendors offer this option, though the UI may be different. So, if you know your router’s admin panel, you will easily find the reconnect button .

Why can’t I get an IP address for some countries?

It is common to find servers in UK, US, and Canada having more traffic than servers in other locations. However, you might find few or no servers available in some regions. Some of the reasons for this include:

  • Lack of user demand
  • Limitations from local laws
  • Lack of adequate infrastructure, high-danger areas, or low internet usage
  • A country-wide firewall put in place by the government to block VPN traffic
  • The servers’ maintenance costs outweigh their benefits

It is worth mentioning that some VPN servers may appear to be situated in remote areas such as Grenada and Mauritius . However, these servers are usually not physically located there.

Instead, these servers are virtual and located in another region (usually where the VPN service is based or a nearby country) and make your traffic appear as if it originates from that remote location .

This means you may experience faster speeds compared to a physical server . On the other hand, your provider may be subject to different data privacy laws due to traffic flowing through that server. However, this should not worry you if your provider doesn’t store private data. Virtual servers are often indicated as such on the VPN’s server list, but if you’re not sure, you can always confirm with the VPN provider.

The home truth: You cannot completely hide IP from your ISP

Your Internet Service Provider naturally (and technically) has a complete hold on your online activities.

Of course, when you are using their resources, they would keep an eye on whether or not you are doing anything that goes against their policies.

While that’s an apparent truth, they also have various reasons to spy on you . These include government orders, obligations from law enforcement, technical requirements, and many more.

Therefore, your ISP can still track you regardless of your efforts to learn how to change the country’s IP . Since they know your IP address, they can link your online activities, including your private browsing.

Nonetheless, you still have one such method that serves as a barrier between you and your ISP – a VPN.

But not every VPN is as efficient in blanketing you. Many VPNs continue to leak IP addresses via DNS. Some leak your IP address upon disconnection.

However, ExpressVPN is such a service that ensures foolproof protection .

At first, it encrypts all your data before it leaves your device.

Hence, even if your ISP knows your device is generating data, it cannot meddle with ExpressVPN’s military-grade encryption. Thus, you can enjoy anonymous browsing while ditching your ISP.

Here, we wrap up our discussion regarding the best methods to change the IP address on any device. I would like to reiterate that as a free internet user, changing the IP address is your due right . Masking your IP is an effective strategy to protect your privacy and achieve online security.

Depending on your requirements and preferences, you can use any of the options discussed above.

The king of all options is using a robust VPN like ExpressVPN . It warrants the utmost privacy with its range of IP addresses and servers and data encryption.

You can temporarily use Smart DNS or a web proxy to change your IP address country .

Do share with us which of these country IP-changing methods you prefer for yourself. Also, if you think we missed anything that should be there in our article, feel free to share it with us.

Changing your IP address can prompt a CAPTCHA request since most websites use them as a security measure to protect against bots and other automated activity.

Most countries don’t deem changing IP addresses an illegal activity. However, you should be aware of illegal activities often associated with hiding or changing an IP address.

Reliable VPNs take your privacy seriously; hence, they rarely expose your actual IP address.

You do not require a dedicated IP address. However, if you wish to acquire remote access to particular devices or services, you can choose to have a dedicated IP address.

Yes, you can request a new IP address from your ISP. However, you might require some technical assistance from the support team.

VPN providers allow you to choose a server location. Once the VPN establishes a successful connection, it will assign you a new IP address.

To get a US IP address, you only need to select a server located in the US.

Corporate VPNs are monitored and controlled by the firm’s IT administrators. They can collect your logs and tell you how you use their network facility.

Most paid VPNs offer a static IP address. The VPNs discussed in this article all offer static IP addresses.

No. While both help you unblock geo-restricted content, key differences exist. On the one hand, a VPN encrypts your traffic, while a proxy doesn’t. Therefore, a proxy can expose your data since it’s not protected.

Do you want to know how to change your IP address? Whether you want to protect your security, keep your browsing activity private, change your online location, or avoid restrictions and bans, changing your IP address is a relatively straightforward process. While you can do it manually, the best method is to use a VPN .

How to Change your IP Address on Any Device [It's Not Hard]

This article will show you the different ways to change your IP address across various devices. We’ll also answer some frequently asked questions about changing your IP address, like its legality.

The Most Common Way to Change an IP Address

There are several ways to change your IP address, depending on whether you want to change your local or public IP address. Your local or internal IP address is assigned to your device by your router, and it’s only used inside your private network. On the other hand, your public or external IP address is assigned to your device by your ISP (Internet Service Provider), and you can’t change it on your own.

If you’re wondering which IP address you should change, local or public, it depends on what you want to do. Changing your local IP address can be done manually, and you’d only need to do it if you’re going to troubleshoot issues with your internet connection.

However, if you want to access geo-blocked content on a streaming service, hide your online location, or protect your online activity, then you should change your public IP address. You can do this by using a proxy server, rebooting your modem, unplugging your router, or with a VPN.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is the best and safest way to change your public IP address. While there are many VPN apps on the market, one of the most popular options is ExpressVPN . We will use them for the duration of them throughout this tutorial as we have found them to be extremely reliable and secure. Technically speaking, a VPN “hides” your IP address by creating an encrypted connection. This type of connection acts as a tunnel between your device and the internet.

While you can’t choose your new IP address, with ExpressVPN , you can select the geographic region that will be associated with your device. Choosing another geographic area is especially useful when you want to access websites, apps, and streaming services unavailable in your country.

ExpressVPN is compatible with various devices, including Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Chromebook, Linux, and more. You can even use it for Smart TV systems and game consoles.

This can be beneficial for protecting your privacy and sensitive information from being tracked or accessed by third parties. It helps prevent online surveillance, targeted advertising, and potential cyber threats.

Personal Freedom: Changing your location can be advantageous when you want to maintain privacy or keep your whereabouts confidential. By changing GPS location on your iPhone & Android , you can prevent others from easily monitoring your movements via apps like Find My and Life360. Now that we understand the importance of how to change location on PC without VPN, let's get into the actual processes you need to try to make this happen. Most of the methods you'll use will be simple enough for anyone, while others might take some training or trial and error.

Method 1: Using Browser Extension

Browser extensions are software programs that add features and functionalities to your internet browser of choice. That could be something like making online shopping more accessible or hiding your location without a VPN.

browser extension

One of the most significant benefits of using various browser extensions for changing location data is that they are easy to use. Additionally, most browser extensions are free or relatively low-priced, so you don't need to worry about paying for an expensive VPN. Browser developers work hard to make extensions as easy to use as possible because they serve a massive clientele base ranging from 5 to 105-year-old users.

You want to select a browser extension that offers users an easy and secure way to change the location data on a PC. In addition, they should be lightweight and user-friendly, so you don't experience a speed reduction when browsing your favorite blogs or online stores. It also helps if your chosen extension is compatible with all major browsers, including Chrome, Safari, Brave, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Change Location on PC without VPN:

Visit your website or extension store and download a popular extension, for example Location Guard  for Chrome.

Once installed, go to Options  and the Default Level  to: Use fixed location .

use fixed location

In Fixed Location , choose any location on the map and click on it to create a “place” you want to appear from.

choose any location

This should work for most low-level websites and Location Guard is free to use, but you may have to adjust the privacy levels depending on where you are visiting. A dating app may need more accurate location settings whereas a news website probably only needs a general area (lower privacy setting).

Method 2: Modifying Network Settings

If you're comfortable modifying your network settings, you can also change your location without a VPN. Modifying network settings is a bit more technical than using a browser extension, but it can be very effective. You will want to take your time with each step and maybe check out a few YouTube videos to ensure you complete all stages correctly. One tiny mistake can mean it no longer works or potentially harm your PC system.

It helps to get a little background. Network settings are configurations on your PC that help it connect to the internet. By modifying these settings, you can change your IP address and location because you are changing the settings you use to browse the internet. This is a free process that doesn't require a complex VPN, but that is because it can be damaging to your system if performed incorrectly.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Modify Network Settings to Change Location on a PC:

These steps outline how you will modify your PC's default location settings. Once completed, you will see different content delivered to your browser and native stores for your operating system. Please proceed cautiously, as this could affect your settings, PC integrity, and services.

Visit your PC Settings by first clicking on the Start Menu .

Choose the Privacy option in your settings and then click on Location.

privacy option

Click on Set default on the list under Default location.

set default

Windows maps will open, and you can change your default settings to another location by following the prompts provided.

Save, and you should be good to go.

Part 3. Best Free VPN You Can Try - iRocketVPN

A VPN is the best way to change your location for apps, games, and hiding your IP address. Other methods cannot give you the full support and most extensions only work for part of a website, specific forms, or with low level privacy restrictions. With iRocketVPN , you get a powerful tool that offers users an easy and secure way to change location on PC. This is a free VPN option with unlimited bandwidth, breakneck speeds, and ever-growing international servers to ensure you never experience any downtime.

How to change location and IP address with a VPN

Find out how to change your location and IP address using a virtual private network.

Illustration of a 3D map on a mobile phone

Why use a VPN?

How to change your location, location lockout.

Virtual private networks (VPNs) have all sorts of uses, and though most people download them to shore up their digital privacy, they can also change the location of your laptop, desktop, mobile, or tablet's IP address to somewhere entirely different.

There are plenty of good reasons to do so. Whether it's getting around annoying blocks that some workplaces and countries impose on social media platforms (like Twitter and YouTube ), accessing Netflix's regional content libraries, or keeping up with international sports, a VPN is, by far, the easiest way to switch up your location.

The process is called 'geo-spoofing' by the tech-savvy people of the internet, and I'll show you how to do it yourself with the help of one of the best VPNs in the biz.

ExpressVPN: my #1 VPN pick overall

ExpressVPN: my #1 VPN pick overall

I’ve put a lot of VPNs to the test over the years, and ExpressVPN tops the lot. It's wickedly fast and capable of keeping up with HD streaming, and has all the tools you need to deter even the craftiest snoopers. Plus, with servers in 94 countries, you'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to picking out a new location.

Be sure to put ExpressVPN's 30-day money-back guarantee to good use, and get an extra 3 months of coverage and a year of unlimited secure cloud storage when you pick up a 12-month plan.

All of your devices have their very own IP address —and a VPN switches this original IP address with one that belongs to a VPN server. This is how they fool the sites you visit into thinking you're somewhere else. Sites, third-party snoopers, and anyone else who might decide to check out your activity will see the VPN server's IP address rather than your original IP.

So, if you're in the States and you connect to a VPN server in the UK, you'll be able to browse British content with your shiny new IP address as though you, yourself, were in the country. Pretty simple, right?

As I mentioned earlier, there are dozens of reasons why changing your location can come in handy. Here are just a few:

Unblocking content : you might already be aware that different countries get access to different content on streaming platforms—some of the best US Netflix shows just aren't available to folks elsewhere, and BBC iPlayer is blocked for anyone outside the UK.

Keeping up with sports : similarly, some sporting events won't be broadcast (either live or on-demand) where you live. This can be particularly annoying if you're trying to stay up to date with the latest results.

Bagging bargains : with access to VPN servers around the world, you'll be able to hop from location to location to find the best sale prices in different regions, and save some serious cash.

Improving your digital privacy : masking your original IP address is also an awesome way to boost your anonymity and security when you're online. VPNs keep your browsing habits safe from prying eyes, including site trackers, opportunistic cybercriminals, your internet service provider (ISP), and even your government.

Protecting your digital rights : for journalists, whistleblowers, or anyone else dealing with delicate digital issues, using a VPN to disguise an original IP address is practically a necessity.

Believe it or not, this is the easy bit. I'm using ExpressVPN to outline the steps you'll need to take to change your location, but there are plenty of super secure VPNs on the market that you can check out.

(Oh, and I'm also on a Mac, but you can switch your location on mobile with the best VPNs for iPhone and the best VPNs for Android .)

  • Download and install ExpressVPN (you'll need to sign up and pick out your subscription tier, too).
  • Log in to the ExpressVPN client, and you'll see a long list of available servers.
  • Pick a server in the country where you want to appear, and click it to connect.
  • You're all set—after a few seconds, your VPN server will do the legwork, and you'll have a brand new IP address in the location of your choice.

ExpressVPN app interface on Mac

Unfortunately, some sites and services (like Netflix), use advanced detection methods to figure out whether you're using a VPN to change your location. If they sniff you out, they might prevent you from checking out the videos you're trying to watch or restrict your access to the same content you can see in your original location.

This hiccup is particularly common for folks using a shared IP address, since other people can use them to spoof their location in the same way that you are. Some VPNs actually offer dedicated IP addresses, that only one person can access, that'll help you avoid this issue—so long as you're willing to pay for the privilege.

However, before you fork over more cash, there are a few fixes that are worth trying.

Switch servers

The first thing to do is to see whether you can switch servers. Plenty of VPNs offer multiple servers in one location, so you can try your luck with a few alternatives in the same country and see if you fare better.

Remove browsing data

If this doesn't work, you might have browsing data (like cookies) saved on your device, giving away your real location.

How does this happen? Well, when you visit a site for the first time, a pop-up can pester you and ask if you want to share your location with the site. If you give the site permission, it'll always know where you really are, even if you're using a VPN.

Looking for alternatives to Google search? DuckDuckGo won't record your IP address or personal data, and Mozilla Firefox has way more privacy tools.

Some sites can detect cookies on your browser, too, and read your original location. There's a way to prevent this: by clearing your browser cache.

However, doing so will clear your browsing history. If you'd rather avoid deleting all those useful links, you can do your browsing in incognito mode, though this won't change your location by itself—you’ll still need a VPN.

If you're using Google products (and let's face it, most of us are), it's a good idea to switch off location tracking services, too. It's a pretty straightforward process:

  • Open up a Google search page
  • Click the padlock to the left of the site address
  • Select permissions > Location access
  • Select 'Block for current search engine'

Solve DNS leaks

Sites can figure out your real location, even if you're using a VPN, through DNS leaks . Some VPNs encrypt your web traffic without forwarding DNS requests from your devices to their servers. Instead, your requests will be routed, unconcealed, to your ISP's DNS servers. This is a DNS leak in a nutshell, and it makes it incredibly easy for sites to detect your original whereabouts and keep tabs on what you get up to online.

If your VPN provider doesn't use its own DNS servers to handle your requests, I'd recommend switching to one that does.

If you're using a secure browser and still finding that your VPN servers are blocked, you can take matters into your own hands and set up your very own VPN server. You'll need network administrator experience to do this, but free and open-source software like Outline VPN is designed specifically for folks who want to create a VPN service.

Looking for a VPN that'll unblock streaming content in just a few clicks? Check out our guide to the best Netflix VPNs .

Contact your VPN provider

If all else fails, it's worth contacting your VPN’s customer support team to ask which services, sites, and apps do and don't work with the VPN. It's worth noting that Netflix is particularly finicky—VPN users are only allowed to view its self-produced licensed content, and you'll be blocked entirely if you’re subscribed to the Basic ad-supported plan.

VPN support agents are usually more than happy to help you pick out a better server, adjust your configuration, or get set up with a dedicated IP address. All you need to do is ping them via live chat or register a support ticket.

Can I use a free VPN to change location?

If you're working with a budget, or prefer not to part with a penny, there are a number of reliable free VPNs out there.

However, most of these services come with restrictions. You'll likely have to put up with bandwidth restrictions and a monthly data cap, and fewer servers in fewer locations. Free providers often struggle to unblock the likes of Netflix, too, making them less than ideal VPNs for streaming . Oh, and since these VPNs have to make money somehow, you might be inundated with ads—or, if you're using a particularly unscrupulous service, your personal information might be sold off for profit.

What else can I use a VPN for?

VPNs help folks navigate the web without restrictions. For instance, some countries block sites entirely—like China's outright ban on Facebook and Twitter. Using one of the best VPNs for China , however, can help you bypass these blocks and enjoy unfettered access to the internet.

Myriad threats are lurking around every digital corner, unfortunately, and you might not want search engines keeping tabs on your every online move. The data gleaned from this kind of invasive tracking can help advertisers spin up creepy ads tailored to your habits. VPNs put a stop to this by encrypting your data—meaning you can go about your business without anyone looking over your shoulder.

Can I get a specific IP address with my VPN?

Yes, you can—with a dedicated IP. Dedicated IPs aren't assigned to multiple users; they’re reserved for one person. However, if you decide to invest in a dedicated IP, you'll be able to switch from it to a shared IP, and back again, whenever you choose. Most VPNs offer dedicated IPs in exchange for a monthly fee.

How do I change my VPN region?

Changing your VPN region (or location), is a piece of cake. All you need to do is install the VPN on your device and open up the app. You'll see a long list of servers in countries all around the globe—pick one (or let your VPN match you with the quickest option), and you’re done. You'll have a new IP address and a new location.

How do I know if my location has changed?

If you want to make sure that your location really has changed, and that sites aren't able to determine your original whereabouts, there are a few ways to check.

You can use a site like WhatIsMyIPAddress.com to identify your original IP address, with your VPN switched off, and then connect to a VPN server and refresh the page. If the IP address is different, your VPN is working as it should be, and has masked your original IP address. If both addresses are the same, you might be dealing with a less-than-reliable VPN or a leak.

We test and review VPN services in the context of legal recreational uses. For example: 1. Accessing a service from another country (subject to the terms and conditions of that service). 2. How to Turn Off Your VPN: Why You Might Need to Temporarily Disable Your VPN

  • At a Glance

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is an excellent way to both keep you protected online and provide access to content that you might usually be unable to enjoy. Despite a VPN’s obvious benefits, you may need to temporarily disable your VPN connection from time to time.

In this article, we’ll discuss why you may need to temporarily disable your VPN, how to do it on your devices or router, and I’ll also explain why it’s a good idea to leave your VPN enabled as much as possible.

  • Why Should I Keep My VPN Turned On?

The most important reason to keep your favorite VPN turned on whenever possible is that it protects your online security and privacy. A VPN encrypts your internet connection, encasing it in a virtual tunnel of sorts, hiding your online travels from your ISP, the government, hackers, and other nosy types. A quality VPN also protects your privacy by  never keeping any logs  connected to your online activities, so there is no evidence to be had of your online antics.

A quality VPN also has the ability to provide access to content in other countries. Since streaming services, gaming companies, and other online entertainment sources often restrict access to their content to users in specific countries, you may not normally have access to that content. A VPN temporarily assigns a fresh IP address to your connected device. If you connect to a VPN in another country, the VPN makes it appear to the rest of the internet that you and your device are in that country. This opens up access to content in that country.

  • When Should I Turn Off My VPN?

There are several situations where you may want to temporarily disable your VPN. These can include:

  • Connection troubleshooting: You may be like Andy, who works for Parks and Recreation, and are  experiencing network connectivity problems . If so, you’ll need to troubleshoot your connection in order to determine whether there are problems with your network or if it is being caused by something else, like issues with the VPN server you’re connected to. If you disable your VPN and your connection is restored, that indicates that the VPN server you were connected to wasn’t working properly. In that case, the solution would be to connect to a different VPN server to see if the issue is resolved.
  • Extend your device’s battery life: Many of us live on our smartphones, tablets, and laptops. This makes it important to extend your device’s battery life as much as possible so that you can make it through the day before your device’s battery is drained. The more apps you’re running, the quicker your battery will be drained of its charge. This goes for VPN apps as well. A VPN app needs to encrypt the data it sends to the VPN server, which adds to the overhead of the app, leading to shorter battery life. Either turn off your VPN when you’re not actively browsing the web or when you’re not engaging in other internet-related activities. You can also try using a more modern connection protocol in your VPN app, like WireGuard, that provides more efficient operation.
  • Accessing some websites and services: While most premium websites provide reliable access to geographically restricted websites and services like streaming providers, these sites are getting better at blocking IP addresses used by VPN providers. This means that even if you’re connected to a VPN server inside of your own country, the site or service may have blocked the IP address the VPN assigned to your device. In this instance, you should first try connecting to a different VPN server or temporarily disable your VPN connection to access these sites and services.
  • You’re in a country where VPNs are illegal: Using a VPN is totally legal in most countries. However, there are a few overly restrictive countries (such as  China  and Belarus) that have banned VPN use while you’re inside their borders. In this case, don’t run the risk of being arrested for using a VPN and don’t use a VPN while you’re visiting those countries.
  • How to Disable a VPN

The procedure for disabling your VPN can vary, depending on whether you’re using a VPN provider’s app, your device’s built-in VPN capabilities, or a router. In this section, I’ll walk you through all of these.

If You’re Using the VPN Provider’s App

If you’re using your VPN provider’s app to protect and enhance your online travels, the method of disabling your VPN can vary from provider to provider. Most VPN provider’s apps include a large connect/disconnect button that can be used to toggle the VPN connection on or off. Some providers even offer a way to temporarily disable your VPN connection, which automatically reconnects to the VPN server after a set period of time. Let’s take a look at how my top two VPN picks handle this.

My top VPN, NordVPN , offers comprehensive VPN app support for most popular devices. NordVPN’s apps make it easy to quickly enable and disable VPN protection on your connected device.

In  macOS , to disconnect or pause your VPN connection, do the following:

  • While you’re connected, look for the NordVPN icon in your Menu Bar at the top of your macOS desktop.
  • Click on the icon.
  • In the pull-down that appears, click the “Disconnect” button to completely disconnect from the VPN server until you decide to manually reconnect.
  • To pause your VPN connection for a short period of time, click the “Pause” button instead, then click “Pause for 5 mins,” “Pause for 30 mins,” or “Pause for 1 hour.” The VPN will then disconnect from the current VPN server and then reconnect once the designated amount of time has passed. This comes in handy when you just need to disable your VPN for a while and later reconnect without the need for you to remember and reconnect manually.

  • Manually Turning Off Your Operating System’s VPN

If you don’t use a provider’s VPN app and have manually configured your VPN on your operating system, then this section is for you. Here’s how you can disable a VPN on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux devices.

Windows 10/11

  • Go to “Settings” -> “Network & Internet.”
  • Select “VPN” from the “Network & Internet” menu.
  • Click the VPN you want to disable.
  • Click on “Disconnect.”

macOS Sonoma

  • Click the Apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of your Mac’s desktop.
  • Click on “System Settings…”
  • Click on “VPN” in the left pane.
  • Find your VPN connection in the window on the right.
  • Click the toggle button to the right of the VPN’s name to toggle it to the “OFF” position (if the switch is green it’s turned on, if it’s gray it’s turned off.

Depending on which version of Android you have installed on your device, these steps can vary a bit from version to version.

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap on “Network & Internet.”
  • Tap on “VPN.”
  • Toggle off your VPN.
  • Tap “General.”
  • Scroll down to “VPN & Device Management.” Tap that.
  • Tap “VPN” on the “VPN & Device Management” screen.
  • Toggle the “VPN Status” on the “VPN” screen to “Not Connected.” (Green is on, gray is off.)

Here are the instructions for disabling a VPN on the popular Ubuntu version of  Linux .

  • Click the network icon, found in the top right corner.
  • Click “VPN connections” from the dropdown menu.
  • Click on the active VPN connection to disable it.

The process of turning off a VPN on a router depends on your router model. Check with your VPN provider or the manufacturer of your router to find the exact method for disabling your VPN.

  • Start by determining your router’s IP address. You can usually find the IP address printed on a sticker on the back or bottom of the router. If you’ve changed the router’s IP address (you can do this on most popular routers), hopefully you’ve written the new IP address down somewhere.
  • Type the router’s IP address into your browser’s address bar. The router’s admin page should quickly load into the browser window.
  • Enter your administrator login credentials. This information should also be on the back or bottom of the router (again, you hopefully changed the password of your router when you set it up and have it in your password manager or a similarly secure storage location).
  • Find the VPN settings in the Admin panel.
  • Disable the VPN and restart your router.

While it’s important to keep your VPN turned on during your day-to-day activities, there are occasions when you’ll either want or need to disable your VPN protection. As we’ve found, it is relatively easy to manage your VPN connection, ensuring that you have online security and privacy protection when you need it.

  • Turn Off Your VPN FAQs

Does a Kill Switch Turn Off a VPN?

While the term “kill switch” might lead you to believe that a  kill switch  is designed to turn off your VPN, it is actually a security and privacy feature that cuts off your internet access if your VPN connection drops for any reason. This protects against leaving your online activities unprotected and open to being monitored or traced.

What is Split Tunneling?

Split tunneling  is a VPN feature that allows you to pick and choose which apps use your VPN’s protected tunnel and which use your unprotected internet connection. This allows you to keep your VPN turned on for activities that benefit from it, while other connections are handled as your ISP intended. This comes in handy if you’re having issues accessing a website or streaming service or similarly finicky connections.

How to get unbanned from Discord with a VPN

' src=

Whether it’s chatting with friends or connecting with like-minded people in niche communities, Discord lets you do it all—which is why it’s one of the most popular VoIP and instant messaging platforms out there. Users can join any of thousands of servers and interact with strangers online. However, each server, and Discord itself, has its own rules to abide by, which can result in a ban if violated.

There are generally three types of Discord bans:

  • A temporary ban means that the user’s account—and potentially their IP address—has been suspended and they will not be able to access Discord for a period of time, which can last up to a year.
  • A server ban means that the user’s account and IP address are blocked from joining that particular server, although the user can continue using their Discord account on other servers. This also affects other accounts on the same IP address.
  • A permanent ban means the user’s account and IP address are completely blocked from using Discord. If a phone number has been added to the banned account, the phone number will be similarly blacklisted. Other accounts using the same IP address will not be able to access Discord as well.

Since these bans primarily involve blocking IP addresses, the easiest and fastest way to bypass Discord bans is to change your IP address via a VPN. Note that this method doesn’t actually remove the ban on your current Discord account; you’ll need to create a new account.

Also, if you haven’t yet, be sure to sign up for ExpressVPN and install the ExpressVPN app on your device.

FAQ: Get IP unbanned from Discord

How do i check my discord bans.

There isn’t one single place to check if and where you’ve been banned. If you suspect you’ve been banned from a server, try rejoining that server. If you’re unable to rejoin it, you’re most likely banned.

How long can Discord bans last?

Temporary bans on Discord can last up to a year. However, server bans are indefinite, while permanent bans mean that you won’t be able to access Discord at all with your account.

Does Discord tell you if you are banned?

Discord doesn’t inform you if you are banned from a server. If your account received a temporary or permanent ban from the Discord platform, you will receive a notification specifying the ban.

Can you get banned from Discord for being under 13?

Users need to be at least 13 years of age to use Discord. If a user is reported to be underage, their account may be blocked until their age is verified.

Can a VPN bypass an IP ban on Discord?

Yes, using a VPN can help you get around IP bans on Discord. A VPN can also help you regain access to Discord even on school and office networks, or in countries where it’s censored.
