Lutron Launches Powerful HomeWorks QSX Processor

Lutron Electronics , has launched the HomeWorks QSX processor , the latest addition to the company’s flagship whole-home solution.

Lutron says it has made the largest ever investment in HomeWorks, with the new QSX processor bringing heightened connectivity and reliability, streamlining the installation and upgrade process for integrators and customers.

The maker says the update comes with a stream of benefits, including the ability to backup and restore project databases from the cloud to avoid project file loss, increased processing power and memory to manage larger, more complex projects.

In short, Lutron says HomeWorks QSX makes the platform easier to design, install, activate, program and service. “The new HomeWorks platform sums up the ‘Lutron Difference.’ It’s a game-changing addition to our international portfolio of products and solutions,” says Nate Hagemeier, Senior Sales Director Europe and Africa at Lutron.

  • Pair and Configure a Lutron System with a Crestron Home® System

Lutron HomeWorks QS, HomeWorks QSX, RadioRA 2, RadioRA 3, and RA2 Select systems can be integrated into a Crestron Home system to enable control of Lutron lights, shades, and fans. The Lutron devices can be controlled from a user interface device such as a Crestron touch screen, TSR-310 handheld remote, iOS® device, and Android™ device.

Lutron RadioRA3, Homeworks QSX, and RA2 Select processors and their configurations cannot migrate to a different Crestron Home processor. During the pairing process, a unique certificate is created that allows communications between the two processors. If the system is migrated, the Lutron system must be paired and reconfigured.

  • It is recommended that the names of the Lutron areas match the names of the rooms in the Crestron Home system. This will allow the Crestron Home system to automatically import the matching areas. Non-matching areas will need to be added individually on the Pair Devices screen.
  • One Lutron system can be added to a Crestron Home system.
  • Crestron Home allows 50 light scenes and 50 shading scenes per room. For details, refer to Quick Action and Scene Limits .
  • Only Lutron areas that contain keypads that control lights, fans, or shades will be added to the Crestron Home system.
  • Phantom Keypads that are part of a HomeWorks QSX system are imported and provide greater flexibility and functionality for the system.
  • The Lutron area cannot be renamed.
  • Add a Lutron System

To add a Lutron system, complete the following procedures:

  • Discover and Pair the Lutron System
  • Add the Lutron Areas and Scenes
  • Rename Lutron Button
  • Configure the Lutron Scenes (RA2 Select Systems Only)

To discover the Lutron system and pair it with a Crestron Home system:

Tap Manage Gateways in the Device Types menu. The local network is scanned for gateways that can be added to the Crestron Home system. Discovered gateways appear under the Gateways on Network menu.

NOTE: If necessary, tap Recheck Network to rescan the network for available gateways.

Select the Lutron system from the Gateways on Network menu and then tap the plus button ( + ) to add it to the system.

When the prompt appears:

RA2 Select and HomeWorks QSX Systems

Press the Add , Program , or pairing button on the Lutron device. The Crestron Home system and the Lutron system will establish a connection. To stop the pairing process and return to the Gateways screen, select Cancel .

Enter a descriptive name for the gateway and then tap OK .

HomeWorks QS and Radio RA2 Systems

Enter a descriptive name for the system along with the user name and the password for the system and then tap OK .

NOTE: When the Lutron system is added to the Crestron Home system, the Lutron folder becomes available in the Device Types menu on the Pair Devices screen.

NOTE: Scenes are added for RA2 Select systems only.

Tap Lutron in the Device Types menu.

The Auto-Add Lutron Equipment dialog box is displayed and lists Lutron Area names that match room names in the Crestron Home system. The Lutron areas with matching room names can be automatically added to the rooms in the Crestron Home system. To automatically add the Lutron Areas (and equipment) to the indicated rooms, tap Yes , or tap No to manually add the Lutron Areas to rooms.

  • Lutron areas that do not have a matching Crestron Home room names are added to the Lutron Area menu and must be manually added to a room.
  • To manually add a Lutron area to a room, refer to Add Lutron Areas to Rooms .
  • Tap the Rescan button to scan the Lutron system for new Lutron areas and new equipment. For details, refer to Rescan the Lutron System .
  • After the Lutron system is added and Lutron is selected from the Device Types menu for the first time.
  • After the Rescan button is pressed and matching room names are discovered.

(For RA2 Select Systems Only) The Auto-Add Lutron Scenes dialog is displayed and lists the Lutron Scenes that can be imported. The Lutron Scenes are placed in the Whole House room in Light Scenes and Shade Scenes configuration pages. To add the Lutron Scenes to the Crestron Home system, tap Yes . Tap No to skip the Lutron Scene import process.

If No is selected, the Lutron Scenes are not added to the Crestron Home system. To add the Lutron scenes, refer to Rescan the Lutron System .

  • A Lutron scene cannot be imported if the scene name already exists in the Crestron Home system or matches a Crestron Home reserved scene name (All On, All Off, All Open, All Closed). The scene name is displayed in red text if a scene name conflict exists.
  • Lutron scenes that control both lights and shades are imported as separate light and shade scenes but retain control of all devices in the scene. For example, the lights and shades are adjusted to their scene levels if the Lutron shade scene or the Lutron light scene is recalled.
  • To scan the Lutron system for new Lutron Scenes, tap Rescan . For details, refer to Rescan the Lutron System .

  • Add Lutron Areas to Rooms

This procedure is required for Lutron areas that must be manually added to the Crestron Home system.

NOTE: Only one Lutron area can be added to each room in the Crestron Home system.

To add a Lutron area to a room:

  • Select the room where the Lutron area is installed from the Select a room menu.

Select the Lutron area from the Lutron Area menu and then tap the plus button ( + ) to add the Lutron area to the selected room.

The Lutron Area is added to the room and displayed as a Lutron Area folder in the room. Lutron loads (lights, shades, and fans) are also added to the room.

Rename Lutron buttons with user-friendly names. The name of the button is displayed in the Crestron Home user interface.

NOTE: Lutron buttons are placed in the Light Scenes and Shade Scenes screens when the Lutron system is imported. The buttons function as scenes in the Crestron Home system.

Tap the Configure Lighting Scenes button or Configure Shade Scenes button on the Setup Scenes screen to display the Light Scenes or Shade Scenes screen.

  • Select a room from the List of Rooms menu.

  • Tap the Lutron button from the List of Scenes menu and then enter a new name for the button. The name assigned to the scene will be displayed in the Crestron Home user interface.
  • Assign All On, All Off, All Open, and All Close Scenes

Assign room-level All On and All Off light scenes and All Open and All Close shade scenes to Lutron buttons. When the All On and All Off light scene and All Open and All Close shade scenes are configured, the On/Off or Open/Close functionality of the tile in the Crestron Home User Interface is enabled.

  • The Lutron keypad must be able to provide LED feedback to assign an All On, All Off, All Open, or All Close scene.
  • To make sure that the Crestron Home user interface provides accurate feedback, set the LED Logic to Scene in the Lutron programming software.
  • Crestron® lighting components create All On and All Off scenes and shading components create All Open and All Close scenes when they added to a room. Lutron scenes cannot be assigned as the All On, All Off, All Open, or All Close scene if the scenes already exists in the room. To remove the All On and All Off light scenes or All Open and All Close shade scenes, the room must be removed and then re-added to the system. For details, refer to Rooms .

To assign the All On, All Off, All Open, and All Close scenes:

Select All On , All Off , All Close , or All Open from the Select Scene Type menu and then tap the Save button. The scene name is changed to All On, All Off, All Close, or All Open depending on the selection made.

NOTE: Select Standard from the Select Scene Type menu to reset the scene to normal operating mode. The scene name reverts to its last known name.

Rename Lutron Scenes and Enable Visibility

To view the scenes in the Crestron Home user interface, the scenes must be made visible in the desired room. The name of the scene is displayed in the Crestron Home user interface and must be provided a user-friendly name.

  • Lutron scenes are stored in the Whole House room in the Light Scenes and Shade Scenes configuration screens.

Rename Lutron Scenes

To rename the scene, tap the name of the scene in the List of Scenes menu and then enter a new name for the scene. The name assigned to the scene will be displayed in the Crestron Home user interface.

Configure Scene Visibility

Lutron scenes are hidden when they are imported into the Crestron Home system. To use the Lutron scene in the Crestron Home user interface, the scene must be enabled.

To enable the Lutron scene:

  • Tap the Lutron scene and then tap the eye icon. The Show Scene In dialog box is displayed.

Select the room(s) that should display the Lutron scene.

Tap the Save button to accept the changes.

  • Rescan the Lutron System

Rescan the Lutron system to import changes that were made to the Lutron system or to import individual Lutron lights, shades, and fans into the system.

NOTES: When the Lutron system is rescanned, the Lutron system will be re-downloaded. Consider the following when rescanning the Lutron system.

  • Devices that have been added to the Lutron system will become available to the Crestron Home system.
  • Changes to Lutron scene names and keypad names will not be overwritten.
  • If a Lutron device was added to the Lutron system, the device can be added to the Crestron Home system.
  • If a Lutron area was deleted from the Lutron system, the device and its programming is deleted from the Crestron Home system.
  • If a device in a Lutron system is moved to different Lutron area, the existing device is deleted from the Crestron Home system and is added to the Crestron Home system as a new device.

Tap Rescan in the Lutron Area menu. The Crestron Home system scans the Lutron system for changes.

  • Best Practices for Lutron Systems

Keep the following in mind when integrating Lutron systems into your Crestron Home system.

  • To discover the Lutron system, the Crestron Home processor and Lutron processor must be on the same network and use the same network switch.

Use Lutron Designer Software to incorporate the desired functions in the Lutron system and then import those items into Crestron Home either as scenes or via button emulation. For example, use Lutron Designer Software to perform the following tasks:

  • Create Lutron button programming to control multiple Lutron lights, shades, or fans.
  • Create raise or lower events for multiple Lutron lights, shades, or fans.
  • To import Lutron loads and enable individual load control, the Lutron system must be rescanned. Discovered loads are added to the Crestron Home room containing the Lutron Area.

Individual Lutron lights, shades, and fans can be added to a Crestron Home scene or controlled using standard keypad programming. When creating scenes in the Crestron Home app, consider the following:

NOTE: Individual load control is available on HomeWorks QS, HomeWorks QSX, and Radio RA2 systems.

  • The Crestron Home system executes the scene by commanding each Lutron load to go to the specified level, one load at a time.
  • Lutron loads can be directly selected during keypad programming. Lutron loads can be selected for control when Lighting Load, Shade Load, Lighting Raise, Lighting Lower, Shade Raise, Shade Lower, and Ceiling Fan are selected from the Mode drop-down menu.
  • Although not directly selectable, Lutron loads can be selected for control through scene, quick actions (including sequences), room, and master selections when programming keypads. Lutron loads will be controlled when Scene, Quick Actions, Lighting Room, Shade Room, Master Raise, Master Lower are selected from the Mode drop-down menu. For details, refer to Button Actions .
  • Lutron fans can be turned on when Lighting Load is selected from the Mode drop-down menu. Set the On Speed for the fan in the fan settings screen. For details, refer to Lutron Fan Settings .

Wired light load performance when controlling Lutron loads via Crestron Home keypad programming and Scenes:

  • Loads are controlled in the order that the cabinet is wired.
  • There is a 0.1 second delay between each load that is controlled.
  • Twenty loads in a cabinet can be controlled in approximately 1 to 2 seconds.
  • Loads in multiple cabinets are controlled one cabinet at a time. For example, if there are two cabinets installed, loads in Cabinet A are controlled and then loads in Cabinet B are controlled.

Wireless light load performance when controlling Lutron loads via Crestron Home keypad programming and Scenes:

  • There is a small delay (about 0.8 seconds) between each light load that is controlled.
  • Controlling five wireless lights will take about 4.5 seconds.
  • Controlling 27 wireless lights will take about 17 seconds.

Wired and wireless shade load performance when controlling Lutron loads via Crestron Home keypad programming and Scenes:

  • There is a small delay between each shade load that is controlled.
  • When controlling 20 shades, there will be a 1- to 3-second lag between when the first shade starts moving and the last shade starts moving.
  • To emulate a Lutron button and a function within Crestron Home (for example, a Crestron Home scene), create a sequence that recalls the Lutron button and the Crestron Home function. For details, refer to Sequence .

Lutron loads can be included in a Quick Action when Scene or Sequence is selected from the Mode drop-down menu.

  • To control the Lutron load when Scene is selected from the drop-down menu, create a scene that includes the Lutron load and then select the scene when configuring the Quick Action. For details, refer to Create Scenes and Scene .
  • To control a Lutron load when Sequence is selected from the drop-down menu, add the Lutron load to the sequence and then configure it. For details, refer to Sequence .
  • Lutron shades will be excluded from Crestron Home shade groups. Lutron shade groups should be setup in the Lutron Designer software. Crestron Home will create shade loads for Lutron shade groups, and ungrouped shades.

Diagnostic and logging information is available for the Lutron loads. For details, refer to Diagnostics .

  • The Devices tab in the Diagnostics menu will include all Lutron loads in the same manner as Crestron loads.
  • The Lutron system does not report the online status of individual Lutron loads. The online and offline indicators reflect the state of the Lutron gateway, not the individual Lutron loads.

Unlike Crestron loads, the feedback received from Lutron loads will behave as follows:

  • When a scene is recalled, Crestron Home receives and reports the feedback immediately. Keypads will not flash their LEDs or display a bargraph indicating that they loads are changing.
  • For ramping operations (raise or lower buttons), the feedback will not update until the raise or lower operations is complete.

How to take over/extract programming from existing system?

There are various scenarios here with the first being the easy scenario that everything has been backed up to the cloud, the homeowner has access to the app in which case, all they do is go to the app and give access to the new installer/dealer and things work out great. I'm not sure how that works exactly but I'm guessing that once the homeowner does that, their house shows up on my current jobs once I'm logged into the designer software? I am however more worried about the not so easy scenarios and how one can extract the programming when there is no cloud, what happens to the previous installer's access, and in general when ownership is unclear. If someone from Lutron or someone who knows for sure what the procedures are could explain this, I would appreciate it. It may sound like I'm overthinking it, but I have taken over jobs where the homeowner and installer have gotten into a shouting match and nearly come to blows, so I like to be prepared when I walk into an uncomfortable situation. So here are a few scenerios: Original installer disappeared, homeowner has no app access: So in this case, it's unknown whether the original installer enabled remote access, the homeowner never got access, just keypads on the wall, and there is no way to contact the original installer nor would he cooperate because there was a major falling out between them and the builder/home owner. So what now? Is there a way to manually extract the programming from the processor? Will doing so, sever the original installer's remote access/registration, if it was there to begin with? Will both have access? Original installer disappeared but nothing registered on cloud? This is more of an old fashioned Ra2 scenario where nothing is on the cloud, and nothing is registered (if that's even possible), in other words, nobody has remote access. Can I do a simple, old fashioned extraction? Original installer disappeared, but left copy of database: So again, in this case, the original dealer is nowhere to be found. Homeowner doesn't have access to the app because they are of a certain age and don't care about apps. They just want the keypads to work and pay me to make changes. They do have a copy of the database that the original installer left with them, likely on CD-ROM. If I have access to the database, can I get on the local network, find the processor, and upload my changes if another installer already has this job registered? Do they need to relinquish their access first? Will be both have access? Can I gain access, and remove their access? Multiple programmers for same house: This one is more friendly, but let's say you have the original installer who is busy but wants to let someone else at his company, or perhaps an integrator from another company to also have access to the job so they can test their integrations or make minor changes. I don't want to relinquish access and trusts that no foul will be done by the other person. Can we both have access? Dead processor, no original dealer: So let's say that you get a call that nothing is working and you go and find the processor is dead. Can the homeowner use their app to give you access to the cloud backup? What if the homeowner never had the app set up (again, you'd be surprised how many people DON'T want the app)? Can Lutron verify the address and give copy of the database? If someone can clarify this or add their own scenarios, I would appreciate it. Everyone I've asked just tell me not to worry about it and somehow magically I'd get access if I call Lutron.

Thanks for your questions, we've responded to each question below: Q#1: The homeowner can try to pair their app with the system and if successful navigate to Settings > Help > Remote Assistance from Installer. If they do not get the option to enter a myLutron email address then the original installer did not enable for cloud. Local extraction is not supported in RA3, so the new installer will either have to obtain the original project file or default and reprogram the system. Q#2: Unfortunately Local Extraction is not supported in RA3 and the file would need to be rebuilt- Lutron would highly suggest enabling cloud for this new file. Q#3: If the original installer left a copy of the database, but did not enabled cloud access, then the new installer can use the provided "hard copy" of the project file to access the processor, and make changes. Again, Lutron would highly suggest to enable Cloud Access going forward. Q#4: Yes, multiple installers can have access at once (they not make changes simultaneously, but have access - yes). The homeowner with app access will need to share access with anyone new by navigating to Settings > Help > Remote Assistance from Installer in the app and entering the new installer's myLutron account email. The customer can also set how long the new installer has access to the system for (and revoke access at any time). Q#5: The project is stored on the cloud so if the processor is not connected dealers are still able to download the project file. If the client never had the app setup, then they cannot share access as mentioned in Q1's answer, since the processor would be needed for this step. The only way this scenario could work is if the processor was setup with cloud access before it went down and the original installer checks the Restore Last Transferred File function in the Lutron Designer Software under tools. Lastly, Lutron cannot verify the address and find the file for privacy reasons. Hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
Thank you, this is very helpful. Going back to Q3, if the installer has a physical copy of the database, will they still need the homeowner to give them access on their app or will they be able to go in and do what they need to do? If cloud access was given by the original installer, will they then be locked out?

Yeah I'm a little uneasy about relying too much on the cloud to be honest because even today, there are a lot of homeowners who live in very nice houses and either don't care about the app (just want keypads) or are pretty paranoid about it. This leaves a lot of potential for abuse by installers. The original installer may be fired and decide to take their ball and go home and not leave anything behind - or worse, remotely wipe everything off because of some perceived injustice. Or perhaps the homeowner hires an AV guy to do some integration and make some changes to your programming, but then they're fired but they had changed things around and locked you out on their way out. There are just so many weird situations that can happen in real life. Or, people just disappear- whether they're out of business or they die. Right now, about 75% Lutron work I do is from abandoned systems where I have to go and extract the programming. Homeowners have no clue who installed it, never used an app, and most don't want an app and just want bad dimmer to work or troubleshoot issues. It seems unreasonable to expect homeowners to pay someone to completely wipe everything out and do the programming again because there isn't a local extraction method...and it puts us in a very bad spot because homeowners think we're trying to scam them. "You mean that in order to replace one burned out dimmer, you have to charge me $5000 to reprogram the entire house? Get out of here!"

The spiraling 246m high Evolution Tower is located on plots 2-3 of Moscow-City high-rise business district on Presnenskaya Embankment of Moscow river. New multi-function center occupies the territory of 2.5ha in area, 2ha of which is a landscaped terraced civic plaza, the integral part of the new city piazza, the central open public space of Moscow-City business downtown.

ivic plaza includes 10m high ceremonial stairs (leading from embankment and pedestrian Bagration Bridge to the higher terraced levels) as well as landscaped areas with green lawns, trees, water features, travellators and feature lightboxes.

Under the piazza levels the 2-storey retail mall connects the Evolution Tower with metro station and pedestrian bridge over Moscow river, thus integrating the new development into the large Moscow-City district, the Europe's newest and most ambitious high-rise cluster (7 of 10 highest European skyscrapers ae located here), housing over 4 million square meters of office and retail areas with associated transport and engineering infrastructure.   

The Evolution Gallery mall houses food court and 6,000m2 family entertainment and educational center for various children activities (the first center of that kind in Moscow). 

The 82,000m2 office tower has 52 levels rotated 3 degrees each floor with overall twist reaching 156 degrees clockwise. With world’s largest innovative cold-bent glazing the tower façade provides seamless floating reflection that rotates the panoramas of Moscow skyline vertically, where the reflected clouds moving up enhance the dynamic visual impact of the twisted tower, an unprecedented optical effect in the world architecture.  The Crown with supporting steel structure made of two twisted arches provides the helipad at the very top as well as the open observation roof decks at Levels 51-52 featuring the best panoramas of Moscow riverside with views towards the historical center. 

From the very beginning the developer and architects have set an ambitious task to create a recognizable and symbolic tower, the new icon of contemporary Moscow.  The sculptural DNA-shaped twisting tower symbolizes the evolution spiral with the white façade ribbon wrapping over the roof in a form of 90-degree twisted infinity symbol, which speaks of philosophical concept of evolution and celebrates the development of human civilization. From spiraling onion domes of St. Basil to the iconic Tatlin Tower concept the Russian architecture was obsessed with idea of spiral. The simple and innovative design was based on principles of twisting square-shaped floor plates with vertical structural RC frame supported by a central core and 8 columns with continuous beams and 4 spiraling columns at the corners. 

The proposed structural scheme with cantilevered continuous RC beams and cantilevered floor slabs  picking up the overhangs from the twisted floor plates appeared to be simple, efficient and economical. The complex sculptural tower façade envelope was built using the innovative cold-bent glazing with flat double glazed units cold-formed in 3D within the aluminum frame under its own weight to avoid stepping in geometry. This approach appeared to be both more energy-efficient and more cost-efficient solution in comparison to the stepped curtain wall units previously applied in some twisted unitized facades. 

The multifunctional architectural glass by Guardian significantly reduces the solar gain whilst providing the double glazed unit thermal performance equal to standard triple glazed unit normally used in Moscow to withstand harsh winter conditions. The use of innovative TWIN elevators by ThyssenKrupp saved 2 shafts within the core (10 TWINs instead of 12 double-deckers in the original concept) and contributed to the overall project sustainability with lesser power consumption per passenger. Other sustainable design features include green roofs over the retail mall and integrated coil floor heating under landscaped civic piazza levels using the return water in winter to melt the snow and ice for the safety of pedestrians. The reinforced concrete formwork by PERI, including self-climbing ACS formwork specially designed for the twisting corner columns, allowed to achieve the impressive speed of RC frame construction of 6 days per floor due to perfect site logistics by Renaissance Construction as main contractor. 

All innovative design solutions and optimizations secured the delivery of this fairly unique skyscraper within the project plan and almost within the budget of the standard ‘benchmark’ high-rise building. This turned out to be a major achievement of the design and construction teams. 

The organic twisting silhouette dominates on its background of extruded glass towers greatly contributing into the overall composition of the high-rise Moscow-City cluster. The development delivered a significant open public space on the landscaped roof of the retail mall, thus providing the perfect mix of business uses with public and social activities of the civic plaza and the mall with its food court and core family entertainment function. The synergy of that mix with large underground car-park complemented by the direct link to the metro station and pedestrian bridge as means of main public transportation secured the successful project completion with the recent entire tower acquisition. Bold shape and timeless aesthetics as added values brought by its unique architecture materialized in a commercial success of this project with the tower being fully acquired for corporate headquarters even in the context of oversupply in the Moscow office market. The outstanding quality of architecture and its fine detailing, state of the art building services and communications of Class A office Tower together with the highest level of transport accessibility  (direct access to metro station from the lobby, large car-parking, proximity to boat pier and helipads) make this property very attractive for tenants and visitors. The beautiful riverside panoramas from offices are complemented by green roof and water features of the large 2ha terraced civic piazza as the main recreational outdoor space with direct link from the office tower lobby. 

The highest quality of façade cladding, glazing, vertical transportation and MEP equipment from leading European and international suppliers provided the truly Class-A office environment with the luxury of minimalist spirit in the architecture of the new landmark on the Moscow skyline. Even before its completion the sculptural spiral of Evolution Tower, more often appearing in commercials, posters and magazines, became a new icon for modern Moscow as the symbol of its business ambitions and fast development. The Evolution Tower also became the monument to the courage of its developer (Snegiri Group) and investors, who built the great deal of trust with architects, engineers and contractors by investing their efforts and funds in a challenging adventure of designing and building the unique and innovative skyscraper for the capital of Russia.
