Counting objects by tens and ones involves recognizing and counting the groups of ten and the remaining ones. This is an important skill that helps build a strong foundation in place value. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
- Gather Objects: Collect a set of objects, such as buttons, beads, or small toys. Ensure that you have a mix of groups of ten and individual items.
- Group into Sets of Ten: Instruct students to organize the objects into sets of ten. Each set should have exactly ten objects.
- Count Groups of Ten: Start counting the groups of ten. For each group, say the number out loud. For example, “10, 20, 30, 40, …” as you point to each group.
- Count Remaining Ones: After counting the groups of ten, count the remaining individual items. Use phrases like “and” to connect the count of groups of ten to the count of ones. For example, “40 and 3, 40 and 4…”
- Use Visual Aids: Use visual aids such as drawings, number bonds, or representations of objects to help students visualize the groups of ten and the individual items.
Counting objects by tens and ones is a foundational skill that helps students understand the structure of numbers and prepares them for more advanced mathematical concepts.
