Counting on Number Lines

addition worksheets number line

Each one of these pages includes number lines that increase by 1 for every tick. Various activities are possible, from learning how to count to using these number lines for adding/subtracting. There is no specific activity designated for these number lines, they are printables that you can use as you see fit.

  • Counting by 1s on Number Lines Number Lines with Scales from 0 to 10 Counting by 1 Number Lines with Scales from 1 to 10 Counting by 1 Number Lines with Scales from 0 to 15 Counting by 1 Number Lines with Scales from 1 to 15 Counting by 1 Number Lines with Scales from 0 to 25 Counting by 1 Number Lines with Scales from 1 to 25 Counting by 1 Number Lines with Scales from 0 to 50 Counting by 1

Also called skip counting, counting by numbers other than 1 is a useful skill for students to learn as it helps them mentally calculate the answers to operations without the use of a pencil. These printables can be used for a variety of math activities that involve numbers including learning how to skip count, learning multiplication and other operations, or averaging two numbers. The number lines in this section include ticks for all numbers, but only the target interval is labeled.

  • Skip Counting on Number Lines (by 2 to 10) Counting by 2 on Number Lines from 0 to 20 Counting by 2 on Number Lines from 0 to 40 Counting by 3 on Number Lines from 0 to 30 Counting by 3 on Number Lines from 0 to 60 Counting by 4 on Number Lines from 0 to 40 Counting by 4 on Number Lines from 0 to 80 Counting by 5 on Number Lines from 0 to 50 Counting by 5 on Number Lines from 0 to 100 Counting by 6 on Number Lines from 0 to 60 Counting by 7 on Number Lines from 0 to 70 Counting by 8 on Number Lines from 0 to 80 Counting by 9 on Number Lines from 0 to 90 Counting by 10 on Number Lines from 0 to 100

Continuous number lines allow for a larger range for extension activities that require larger numbers. The number at which each line ends also starts the next line, so if you wanted something more continuous, you could cut and overlap and paste into one long strip of paper. Activities such as multiplying two-digit by one-digit numbers and looking for patterns can be accomplished with these number lines.

  • Counting and Skip Counting on Continuous (Longer) Number Lines (by 1 to 10) Counting by 1 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 100 Counting by 2 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 200 Counting by 3 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 195 Counting by 4 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 200 Counting by 5 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 250 Counting by 6 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 300 Counting by 7 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 350 Counting by 8 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 400 Counting by 9 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 450 Counting by 10 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 500

Adding and Subtracting on Number Lines

addition worksheets number line

Adding and subtracting on number lines math worksheets allow students to visualize questions by drawing curved paths to numbers.

The basic process for completing addition and subtraction questions on number lines is: (i) start at 0; (ii) draw a curved line from 0 to the first addend or to the minuend (first number in the problem); (iii) draw a second curved line from the first addend/minuend to the answer by the same amount as the second addend or the subtrahend. For subtraction questions, the curved line will go toward 0 while in addition questions, the curved line will continue to go to the right. For example, 4 + 5 = 9 would be shown on a number line with a curved line starting at 0 and ending at 4. A second curved line would start at 4 and end at 9 which would be a total distance of 5 (the second addend). If the question was 17 - 8 = 9, the first curved line would start at 0 and go to 17. The second curved line would start at 17 and end at 9 which is a total of 8 backwards.

Adding with number lines is a way for students to visualize how addition works. Modeling addition on a number line first using an interactive white board or an overhead projector allows students to understand how a number line can be a useful tool for learning addition. The answer keys in the case of these worksheets can be shown to students to start with until they understand how the process works. There are 10 versions of each worksheet below, so you shouldn't run out of practice sheets.

  • Adding on Number Lines With Intervals of 1 Adding up to 10 on Number Lines with Intervals of 1 Adding up to 15 on Number Lines with Intervals of 1 Adding up to 20 on Number Lines with Intervals of 1
  • Adding on Number Lines With Intervals Greater Than 1 Adding up to 20 on Number Lines with Intervals of 2 Adding up to 30 on Number Lines with Intervals of 2 Adding up to 40 on Number Lines with Intervals of 2 Adding up to 50 on Number Lines with Intervals of 5 Adding up to 75 on Number Lines with Intervals of 5 Adding up to 100 on Number Lines with Intervals of 5 Adding up to 100 on Number Lines with Intervals of 10 Adding up to 150 on Number Lines with Intervals of 10 Adding up to 200 on Number Lines with Intervals of 10 Mixed Addition Number Lines (Not for the Faint of Heart)

The subtracting on number lines worksheets are similar to the adding ones, but two different colors are used on the answer keys. When the value is increasing, a green curve is used, and when the value is decreasing, a red curve is used. Hopefully, students associate these two colors with adding and subtracting as they learn how to subtract using a number line.

  • Subtracting on Number Lines With Intervals of 1 Subtracting from up to 10 on Number Lines with Intervals of 1 Subtracting from up to 15 on Number Lines with Intervals of 1 Subtracting from up to 20 on Number Lines with Intervals of 1
  • Subtracting on Number Lines With Intervals Greater Than 1 Subtracting from up to 20 on Number Lines with Intervals of 2 Subtracting from up to 30 on Number Lines with Intervals of 2 Subtracting from up to 40 on Number Lines with Intervals of 2 Subtracting from up to 50 on Number Lines with Intervals of 5 Subtracting from up to 75 on Number Lines with Intervals of 5 Subtracting from up to 100 on Number Lines with Intervals of 5 Subtracting from up to 100 on Number Lines with Intervals of 10 Subtracting from up to 150 on Number Lines with Intervals of 10 Subtracting from up to 200 on Number Lines with Intervals of 10 Mixed Subtraction Number Lines (Not for the Faint of Heart)

Additon and subtraction questions are shown on the same worksheet in this section. Once students are familiar with both adding and subtracting using number lines, these worksheets can be used for further practice and to help them pay attention to the operation signs.

Addition on Number Line

Addition on number line helps us to visually perform the addition operation on small numbers. A number line is a visual representation of numbers on a straight line where the value of the numbers increases as we move from left to right. Different arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division can be performed on a number line. Let us learn more about addition on number line in this article.

What is Addition on a Number Line?

Addition on number line is as simple as counting positive numbers by moving towards the right-hand side of a number line. It helps us to visually understand the addition operation using small numbers .

Example: Add 1 + 2

Solution: Let us look into the steps given below to understand addition on a number line .

Addition on Number Line

  • Step 1: Consider the first number (1) as the starting point on the number line. In order to add 1 + 2, mark 1 on the number line.
  • Step 2: Now, from the first number jump by the number of units equivalent to the second number towards the right. This is because the values on a number increase as we move towards the right-hand side. In this case, we are adding 1 + 2, therefore, we will move 2 steps to the right. This will bring us to number 3. So, 1 + 2 = 3

Addition on a Number Line Using a Negative Number:

To add a negative number to a positive number we always move to the left on the number line. Let us take an example to understand this.

Example: Add 3 + (-4)

Solution: Here, we take 3 as the starting number and move 4 units towards the left on the number line which gives the result as -1.

Addition on a Number Line Using a Negative Number

2-Digit Addition on a Number Line

2-digit addition is the addition of numbers where either one or both the addends are of two digits. Let us understand 2-digit addition using an open number line. An open number line is also known as an empty number line as it does not have any marker or number marked on it. It helps us to create a visual model as per our convenience for performing different arithmetic operations such as addition and subtraction . Let us take an example to understand 2-digit addition on a number line.

Example: Add 35 + 42 using an open number line.

2 Digit Addition on Number Line

Let us do this 2 digit addition on a number line using the following steps:

  • Step 1: Draw a straight line which is also known as an open number line and mark the first number (35) on the open number line.
  • Step 2: Observe the second addend and identify the number of tens and ones present in it. The second number (addend) here is 42, i.e., it has 4 tens and 2 ones.
  • Step 4: Taking the first number as the starting point, jump by the equal number of tens (longer jumps) and ones (shorter jumps) towards the right. Here, we will be jumping by 4 tens (longer jumps) and 2 ones (shorter jumps) towards the right using arrows as shown in the figure.
  • Step 5: Each time a jump is made in the forward direction, the results are written on the open number line. In this case, when the first jump was made, the resultant value was 35 + 10 = 45, moving forward, the second jump gave us 45 + 10 = 55, followed by 65, 75 and the final jump of 2 ones was made which gave us the required result 75 + 2 = 77.

Example 1: Add using number line: 5 + 7

Let us find the sum of 5 and 7 by performing addition on a number line.

Addition on Number Line: 5 + 7 = 12

We start by marking 5 on the number line. Then, we move towards the right by 7 units and we reach 12.

Thus, we get the result, 5 + 7 = 12

Example 2: Add 28 and 43 using a number line.

Let us draw an open number line as shown below and follow the steps of 2-Digit Addition on Number Line.

Addition on Number Line: 28 + 43 = 71

  • Consider the first number 28 and mark it on the open number line.
  • The second number here is 43, i.e., it will have 4 tens and 3 ones.
  • Taking 28 as the starting point, we will be moving by 4 tens (longer jumps) and 3 ones (shorter jumps) towards the right as shown in the figure.

Thus, we get the result, 28 + 43 = 71

Example 3: State true or false with reference to addition on a number line:

a.) To add a negative number to a positive number we always move to the left on the number line.

b.) Addition of positive numbers on a number line is done by moving towards the left-hand side of a number line.

a.) True, to add a negative number to a positive number we always move to the left on the number line.

b.) False, addition of positive numbers on a number line is done by moving towards the right-hand sid e of a number line.

FAQs on Addition on Number Line

How to add on a number line.

Addition on a number line is done by the counting logic. To add a positive number, we move towards the right-hand side of the number line, whereas, to add a negative number, we move in the backward direction (left side) on the number line. For example, 3 + 4 can be calculated by taking 3 as the starting number and moving 4 units towards the right on a number line which gives the result as 7. On the other hand, 3 + (-4) can be calculated by taking 3 as the starting point and moving 4 units towards the left on a number line which gives the result as -1.

How to Add Fractions on a Number Line?

Adding fractions on a number line involves the following steps. Let us understand this with an example. Add 1/4 and 2/4.

  • If needed, the given fractions are converted into like fractions. In this case, they are like fractions.
  • The integers are identified between which these fractions lie and they are marked on the number line. Here, the two integers are 0 and 1.
  • The portion between the two integers is divided into an equal number of parts equal to the denominator of the fractions.
  • Keeping the first fraction as the starting point, we move by 2 units in the forward direction or right side on the number line since the second fraction is 2/4. Hence, we land on the required result 3/4.

How to Add 3-digit Numbers on a Number Line?

We use an open number line to add 3-digit numbers on a number line. An open number line is an empty straight line where the numbers are marked only when we keep proceeding with the operations. In order to add 3 digit numbers on a number line, we use the following steps:

  • Step 1: The first number is marked on the open number line.
  • Step 2: Then we observe the second number and identify the number of hundreds, tens, and ones present in it.
  • Step 3: Starting from the first number, we move by the equal number of hundreds (longer jumps), tens (medium jumps), and ones (shorter jumps) towards the right. Each time a move is made in the forward direction, the intermediate results are written on the open number line following which we reach the desired result.

How to Add Negative Numbers on a Number Line?

To add negative numbers on a number line, we always move to the left. For example, -5 + (- 4) = -5 - 4 = -9. We take -5 as the starting point and move 4 units towards the left which gives the result as -9.

How to Add and Subtract Integers on a Number Line?

If a positive integer is added, we move towards the right and if a negative integer is added we move towards the left on the number line. For example: 7 + 3 = 10. Taking 7 as the starting point, we move 3 units towards the right on the number line and land on 10 which is the required result. Let us take 7 + (-3) = 4. Taking 7 as the starting point, we move 3 units towards the left on the number line and land on 4 which is the required result.

In case of subtraction, we change the operation from subtraction to addition, and change the sign of the second number and follow the rules of adding integers on a number line. For example: 6 - 2 can be written as 6 + (-2). Now we start from the number 6 and move 2 units towards the left on the number line which gives the result as 4.

What is Double Digit Addition on a Number Line?

Double-Digit addition on a number line is another name given to 2-digit addition on number line. Double-digit addition is performed using an open number line which is also known as an empty number line. We take the numbers as per our convenience and mark them on the open number line as we proceed with the operations.
