NIOS BOARD TUTOR MARK ASSIGNMENT (TMA) FOR 10th & 12th CLASS

What is tutor marked assignments (tma).

Tutor Marked Assignments are helpful in enhancing the learning skills to make the student gain knowledge easily and be a meritorious student. The open school has developed several means and strategies to help the student learn and be a successful learner. Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA) is one such means TMA helps in developing regular study habits in students and give students practice in writing responses to questions thereby having a kind of rehearsal in the preparation for the final examination. Open school  has developed several means and strategies to help learners to learn well and be successful. TMA is one such tool which plays a very important role in the learning process through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) System. TMAs help learners to know their progress and attainment level and develop regular study habits. They also help in designing diagnostic and remedial teaching strategy during Personal Contact Programmes (PCPs).

Your Internal Assessment shall be done through one Tutor Marked Assignment in each subject which will be in a booklet form. The subject tutors at the AIs will correct the assignments and provide you feedback and suggestions for improvement. The TMA will also be uploaded on Nios  Open school  website from where learners can download them. From the year 2015-16, Internal Assessment (IA) in Secondary/Senior examination will carry 20% weightage of theory as continuous and comprehensive evaluation. These marks will be shown in the mark-sheet along with the marks of external examination which will carry 80% weightage in each subject. TMA is applicable for admission through Stream-1 only. TMA should be submitted before appearing in the Public Examination of the particular subject.

TMA is not applicable to learners seeking registration under the Streams II, III & IV.

In this booklet, you will find one assignment in each subject. You are required to complete the assignment in your own handwriting in the chosen subjects only and submit them to your teacher. TMA is of 20 marks and less numbers from which it is set is mentioned in the beginning.

Questions 1, 2, and 3 are short answer questions containing 2 marks each. Questions 4 and 5 are long answer questions of 4 marks each. You have to answer only one question out of the four given. Question no. 6 gives you a list of four projects of which you have to attempt only one. This question will be for 6 marks. The guidelines for each project work are given along with the topic set.

Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA) are meant to help you learn and be a successful student. They provide you practice in writing answers to questions and get feedback. ABSENT is marked in the mark sheet if the assignments are not submitted on time in the column for grades of TMAs. An ABSENT in the mark sheet in the column for grades will not be acceptable to any student, so one should pay important concern to it. The system of giving 20% weightage to Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA) in final results of the students in Nios Open school  introduced from 2002 examination has been discontinued, subject to TMA being made compulsory and the relative grading in TMA being shown in the final certificate and the separate column (Grade obtained in TMA). According to the Prospectus of 2011-12, submission of at least one TMA in each subject was made compulsory. It was also stated very clearly that learners will not be allowed to appear in public examinations and/or their results may be declared as “INCOMPLETE” unless they have submitted at least one TMA in each subject.

(b) Why does a cell remain stable when placed in isotonic solution? What happens  to it if placed in a hypotonic solution?

(a)  (i) Two men were claiming to be the father of a child named Mohan?

(ii) Suggest to them a conclusive method to identify the real father and name the  enzyme required to make copies of a piece of DNA for PCR required in the  process?

(iii) A farmer is growing transgenic cotton. How is it different from the ordinary  cotton?

(b) (i) You ate a meal comprising pulses (dal) and chapatis (roti). In which parts of the  digestive system would their digestion begin, and be completed?

(ii) Also name the end products?

4. Answer any one out of the following questions in about 100-150 words.

(a) (i) Describe the role of thin, and thick muscle fibres in the contraction of a striated  muscle as explained by the sliding filament theory?

(ii) All tissues of plants require Nitrogen?

(b) (i)  In which ionic form is it taken up by plants, and fr om where in the environment?

(ii) Mention any five organic biomolecules, which they synthesize using the  nitrogen?

5. Answer any one out of the following questions in about 100 to 150 words.

(a) (i) The temperature in Delhi falls to even 5°C in winter and may go up to 45°C  during summer but our body temperature remains at 37°C. How do we make it  possible? 

(ii) Define the concept of homeostasis using the above example in a sentence or  two?

(b) (i) Draw a sigmoid growth curve of a plant to show lag phase, log phase and  stationary phase. Mention what happens to a plant during these phases?

(ii) Some wheat and rice varieties are kept at a lower temperature to flower in the  same climate. Define this process?

6. Prepare any one of the project out of two given below.

(a) Collect ten plants of your choice, uproot them carefully, so that their roots are not  damaged, and press them between fullscape papers, and leave under a pile of books.  Now find out from elders, teachers, gardeners the common, and scientific names of the  plants, and record their description as follows: 

• Common name (Local / Hindi)
• Scientific name
• Description:
• Inflorescence
• Adaptations
• Utility/value – medicinal / cosmetic / ornament
• Season when growing
• Collection site
• Month when collected
• Any other notable characteristic feature.

You may use your book or botany book or internet to describe types of the above  mentioned parts?

(b) Take photographs (or draw Portrait or write name) of one of your parents or siblings  and yourself. Stick them close to each other. Now below each photograph enter the  following:

Write down the following

(i) What is genetics? Write the meaning of inheritance?

(ii) Draw a Pedigree Chart to show inheritance of any of the characters studied in  you and your siblings. 

(iii) Comment on whether you got the gene from the father or mother, and write a  sentence as an evidence for the same.

(b) We have all seen neem trees growing near our houses, on roadsides, in parks, in gardens, in forests and even in our own courtyards. Some of us also know a few of its uses. Describe in your words the advantages of Neem trees, and do you think it is correct to call it a village pharmacy.

4. Answer any one of the following questions in about 100 – 150 words.

(a) In the poem ‘Tall Trees’, the poet presents an integrated picture of nature. It is a harmonious world where various elements and objects of nature like the clouds, birds, day, night, and moon work in close association and without any disagreement. It is a pleasant picture of selfless care and protection. Write a paragraph of 20-25 words about the three activities of the tall trees as described in the poem.

(b) “Show me, son, how to laugh; show me how I used to laugh and smile once upon a time when I was like you.” The father and son in the poem represent two different periods of time. Elaborate.

5. Answer any one of the following questions in about 100 – 150 words.

(a) “Look, I can’t carry mountains or rocks. God gave me only a little strength. I can only carry pebbles. My heart cries out for Rama, and I’ll do all I can for him.” Was the work of the squirrel less important than the monkey’s work? Give reasons for your answer.

(b) Answer the following questions in about 80-100 words each. (i) Comment on the role of the grandmother in trying to make the family atmosphere warm and friendly. (ii) Why do you think people give gifts to their loved ones? (iii) Do you think Kezia’s father was a cruel man who didn’t love his daughter? Give reasons.

6. Prepare any one project out of the following in about 500 words:

(a) We often hear, ”Ekk naari padhegi, saat peedhi taregi”. Women’s Education in India has a major preoccupation of both the government and civil society, as educated women can play a very important role in the development of the country. Education is a milestone of women’s Empowerment because it enables them to respond to the challenges, to confront their traditional roles, and change their lives. Women’s Education in India has been a need of the hour, as education is a foundation stone for the empowerment of woman. Education also brings a reduction in inequalities and functions as a means of improving their status within the family and develops the concept of participation.

What advantages does society get from having educated women? What are the various steps taken by the government to support Women’s Education in the country?

(b) Writing your autobiography can seem like an overwhelming task. To break it into manageable pieces, ask yourself questions that will separate your life into ages, experiences, and important events. Then, interview yourself just as you would another person if you were writing their life story.
