Licensure Requirements

Kansas is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), so you will not need a Kansas nursing license to practice travel nursing in this state if you have a valid license for another Compact state.

However, if you don’t have a multistate license, you will need to apply for licensure by endorsement.

Nurses (RNs and LPNs) that need to fill out an application by endorsement must meet the following requirements:

• Submit official transcripts
• Through Nursys ® ; or
• By contacting your board of nursing and following their license verification procedure
• Submit fingerprint cards and background check waivers
• Submit supporting documents if a legal history needs to be reported
• Meet the requirements for licensure in the home state
• Have graduated from a board-approved program or an international education program approved by the authorized accrediting body
• Pass an English proficiency exam (for international applicants)
• Have passed the NCLEX exam
• Be eligible or hold an unencumbered license
• Submit state and federal fingerprint-based background checks
• Have no state or federal convictions
• Have no misdemeanor convictions related to nursing
• Not be a participant in an alternative program (or self-disclose current participation
• Have a valid social security number

A temporary permit (for 120 days) may be issued to a nurse seeking a renewal license if they have not completed their 30 hours of continuing education.  Temporary permits are not offered for nurses waiting on their licensure by endorsement application to be approved.

Licensure Fees

Licensure fees are as follows:

• Application for single-state license – $100.00
• Application for multi-state license – $125.00
• Application for reinstatement of license with/without a temporary permit – $150.00
• Fingerprint and background check fee –  $48
