Seating details

This Alaska Plane is a really nice plane for my family. It is set up for comfort. Seats are comfortable. There was enough room for all 3 of us but we were all 5'8" or less. There is a USB and power plug on each seat. The tablet/phone rack is a really nice feature. No need to lower your head to look at the screen. Low noise for these seats next to the front of the engines. I would fly this plane any day.

While Seat 11D has a bit extra knee room, it has no under seat foot room because Row 10 Crew Seat directly in front is attached to a 90 degree perpendicular solid panel mounted to the floor, like a bulkhead. Seat 11D has less foot room than a standard seat and should be coded Yellow or Red. (12/3/19)

Row 10 does have floor storage under Row 9. Tray tables are stored in the armrests so all seats in Row 10 may be narrower. The window seats in Row 10 have short exterior armrests due to exit doors.

These are new seats and design. A wall outlet and USB port is on each seat. There is even a Phone or Tablet rack above the table. This is a very comfortable plane. I am 5'8" and there was more than enough legroom. Very quiet in front of the engines.

The legroom in Row 10 is great, but the Window seats 10A and 10F can see out a window only when the seat is reclined (and even then it's a partial view). And the setback pockets that are normally in the seat ahead of you are on the door. At least there's power at every seat. To make matters worse, the overhead bins are not available for this row due to emergency equipment. So, you have to scramble to find space for your bag. One more thing: the plane we were on had standard overheads, rather than the larger ones found on the 737-900s. So, less bag space. And the lavs were narrow. Probably not my favorite Alaska aircraft, despite a quiet ride.

The Airbus is a very comfortable plane: nice seats, good lights and air vent placement. That said, avoid row 9 at all costs. Complete lack of window and recline was 1" at best. I would have NEVER picked this seat - but got stuck with it.

I wish all of Alaska's airplanes were this Airbus. Tired of flying on the old POS 737's. This airplane was big, quiet and very comfortable to Reagan. Plus it lands very nicely compared to those Boeings. I never really liked the old white First Class seats, these are very comfortable for a cross country flight.

That Alaskan breeze: A review of Alaska’s A321neo in economy from San Francisco to New York

Wallace Cotton

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

This review has published with TPG's updated scoring system, and you will notice different point allocations in certain sections of the flight. To read more about the changes, see this post .

[tpg_rating tpg-rating-score="67" ground-experience="4" cabin-seat="24" amens-ife="25" food-bev="5" service="9" pros="Comfortable seats, reliable Wi-Fi, large IFE catalog and good service." cons="No lounge (yet), no special transcon amenities, no built-in screens, no free meals, and the for-purchase food was unappealing." /]

There are few routes in the US that are more competitive than the ones between New York and Los Angeles and San Francisco. As of the writing of this review, over 40 flights depart in each direction every day. And, many flights on these routes are equipped with aircraft sporting international configurations or special transcontinental setups meant to one-up coast-to-coast competitors.

American, Delta and United, aka the US "Big Three," have long dominated the premium-cabin traffic on the route, with JetBlue's TPG Award-winning Mint cabin disrupting and often beating these legacy carriers in service, comfort and price.

Though less glamorous, economy is highly competitive in the transcon market, too. Ever since Alaska merged with Virgin America , a new player has entered the space, vying to bring its loyal customers with it. Alaska has ranked the No. 1 airline in the US by J.D. Power 12 years in a row, but notably, its fleet lacks built-in inflight-entertainment screens and relies on a bring-your-own-device model, unlike other major players on these routes.

Having flown every other economy product on flights between my home in NYC and San Francisco save for one, I figured it was time to try Alaska out on a recently retrofitted, former Virgin America, A321neo (short for "new engine option").

Alaska's MileagePlan is one of the best award programs for two reasons: First, it's still relatively easy to earn miles on Alaska, as you earn miles based on your actual miles flown as long as you purchase (and don't redeem for) your ticket. This is unlike most major airlines today, which calculate mileage earning per flight based on the cost and fare class of your ticket.

Second, Alaska uses a distance-based award chart for its airline partners , and it's here that you can find incredible value for award redemptions, especially in premium economy, business and first class, like JAL or Cathay Pacific business class for only 50,000 miles. If you're looking to boost your MileagePlan balance, consider signing up for the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card . Currently, this card is offering 40,000 bonus miles, and Alaska's Famous Companion Fare from $121 ($99 fare plus taxes and fees from $22) after you make $2,000 or more in purchases within the first 90 days of opening your account.

But we booked this economy one-way ticket last-minute, and it all-in cost $281. I chose the 1:10 p.m. departure from San Francisco (SFO) to arrive in New York-JFK around 10 p.m. Eastern time, as I anticipated delays on the route (and you should too). Any later would land me back in my NYC apartment after midnight.

We used The Platinum Card® from American Express to purchase the ticket directly through Alaska, in order to take advantage of the card's 5x bonus category on flights booked directly through the airline or through Amex Travel.

Flight 1024 departed from Gate 51B in Terminal 2, with boarding set to begin at 12:30 p.m. Coming from the Fillmore District, I gave myself 30 minutes to get to SFO by Lyft, and even with TSA PreCheck and CLEAR, aimed to arrive nearly two hours early to visit a lounge and have enough time to take photos of the terminal. I had been sure to check in and get my electronic boarding pass the day prior.

All Alaska Airlines flights depart from Terminal 2 at SFO, the former home of Virgin America.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

It was easy to find Alaska check-in, baggage and self-help kiosks.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

Since I had already checked in with a boarding pass on my phone, I proceeded directly to security.

Terminal 2 was airy, modern and pleasant. It was connected via AirTrain to BART, as well as every other terminal at the airport (landside only).

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

SFO Terminal 2 has PreCheck and CLEAR right next to the regular TSA security checkpoint. Five minutes after entering the PreCheck line, I was through security. At this not-so-peak late-morning time, the regular security lane looked like it would have taken about 15 minutes to get through.

In 2020, Alaska plans to open a 8,500-square-foot "top floor" lounge in Terminal 2, which will be the second-largest lounge in its network and promises spectacular runway views. On the day of my flight, though, I'd planned to visit the Centurion Lounge in Terminal 3 by Gate 73, but I made a rookie mistake: Terminal 3 isn't accessible for airside connections to Terminal 2. After realizing my mistake, I proceeded down the wide corridor to walk around a bit before boarding.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

There were roughly 12 dedicated food-and-drink establishments in Terminal 2, ranging from restaurants and counter service to coffee (hello, Peet's!), plus other shops, stores and even a wine shop offering tasting menus.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

Terminal 2 stocked a decent assortment of seating, but the power outlets weren't as bountiful.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

I took a seat and enjoyed some of the excellent planespotting views afforded by SFO -- they were running the classic parallel departures from 28L/R and 1L/R.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

After grabbing a not-so-good ham-and-cheese sandwich at Peet's, I connected to the free airport Wi-Fi and headed to the gate.

The gate was crowded, as expected. Based on the seating chart, this would be a nearly full flight on Alaska's largest airplane, the A321neo.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

And lucky me, we got the "More to Love" livery!

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

Boarding began right on time at 12:30 p.m. for our 1:10 p.m. departure. First class boarded at 12:40 p.m., and my group, Group C, boarded a few minutes later.

Alaska Airlines' A321neos are the standard bearer for the airline's transcon service, and should be your preferred Alaska aircraft for these flights, over the tighter 737s.

There are 190 seats on board: 16 in first, 24 in premium and 150 in economy.

Alaska Airlines A321neo economy cabin configuration

First-class seats are in a 2-2 configuration, while premium and economy seats are in the standard 3-3 configuration.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

Immediately, it became clear this airplane was new . The seats were clean and plush (at least as plush as domestic economy seats can be), with minimal use. The crew had chosen to use blue mood lighting, a small but nice touch to instill a sense of calm before a flight.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

I sat on the window behind the wing. As with most A321s, there were lavatories in the middle and back of the cabin (with those in the front reserved for first-class passengers). This seat was behind that middle lav.

Seat 33A was clean when I arrived, and actually quite comfortable. Undeniably, the seat comfort was in part thanks to the newness of the plane, but the seat seemed considerably more padded than the thin economy seats I had on United's 787-10, which I had sat in on my trip out to the Bay a few days prior.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

While other airlines predominantly use internationally configured widebodies or specially configured narrowbodies, this is the standard configuration for Alaska's A321neos, so whether you're flying across the country or on a shorter intra-West Coast hop, you'll get the same product.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

The seat's headrest folded in, moved up and down and even tilted. I found it very comfortable.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

Every seat stocks a few notable features, including a USB and universal power outlet, a smart choice, considering the airline isn't installing entertainment screens on seatbacks.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

Both ports worked. More on this in the IFE and amenities section, but Alaska's robust collection of film, TV and other content was accessible via Wi-Fi and didn't require a separate purchase.

To accommodate its BYOD passengers, Alaska has incorporated nifty design features into the seats to hold a smartphone and tablet (more on that in the next section).

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

A mesh pocket provided extra storage and was significantly less gross than nonmesh pockets that collect all types of crumbs and residue.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

The folding tray table was on the smaller side, and couldn't fit much more than a 13-inch MacBook Pro along with a cup or two.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

Nevertheless, the small size provided larger-than-normal space — and thus visibility — between the seatback and the table, so I could access a carry-on bag under the seat in front without leaning into a seatmate. Lucky for me, though, I had no seatmate for this flight!

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

Notably, Alaska chose to install personal air vents at each seat, which proved helpful as the cabin filled up with people and got hot.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

Shortly after the boarding door closed, our captain came on the P.A. to announce our flight time: four hours, 49 minutes, cruising at 35,000 feet. In seemingly classic SFO fashion, we sat the gate until 20 minutes past departure time for "weight and balance issues." SFO, like JFK and others, is prone to delays thanks to busy traffic and low-lying fog. I'd recommend building time into your itinerary with this in mind.

Finally at 1:34 p.m., we pushed back and slowly proceeded to Runway 1R. Perhaps the one consolation of an SFO delay is the great airline traffic at the airport. Planespotting helped this AvGeek pass the time.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

After nearly an hour of ground delays. we were wheels-up at 2:26 p.m., and through 10,000 feet five minutes after that.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

We leveled off at 35,000 about 30 minutes after takeoff, and the first officer noted that we'd try to make up some time.

About halfway into the flight, a trip to the lavatory revealed a rather standard, albeit clean, airplane bathroom, with a tiny sink that made spilling water on the floor all but a certainty. But it was clean, and that's what counts!

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

Alaska chose to use blue ambient lighting on board as the sun set, creating a pleasant cabin experience for us folks in economy.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

Upon arriving at 33A, I noticed there was no blanket or pillow on the seat, which some other airlines provide on transcon flights. I also noticed what was expected: no built-in TV.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

Alaska Airlines joins the ranks of airlines that have opted out of built-in IFE screens in favor of what we call BYOD (bring your own device). Instead of a traditional TV screen, Alaska, like American Airlines and United on a chunk of their domestic fleets, offers an extensive catalog of complimentary entertainment content through their onboard Wi-Fi. And travelers take note: Do your reading and be sure to download the necessary app to stream content before your flight. On many airlines, once airborne, you will unable to download the app unless you pay for Wi-Fi, if even that.

After a quick Google search the night prior, I read on the Alaska website to download the Gogo entertainment app, which I did in under two minutes. You can also find this information in the information packet in the seatback pocket. They say you can do it in flight, but I'd do it before to be safe.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

It's actually pretty simple once you've downloaded the app: Connect to the inflight Wi-Fi on your preferred device, then go to Alaskawifi.com. It's all outlined in the info packet in the seatback pocket.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

If you don't have a device or if this sounds too complicated, tablets are available to rent on select coast-to-coast and Hawaii flights for $10 for the flight (free for MVP Gold 75K passengers). Headphones are available for purchase for $3, but that's included if you go in for the tablet. Tablets are collected 30 minutes prior to landing.

Alaska provides plenty of options for your viewing pleasure. From every Harry Potter film to "Dunkirk," "E.T.," "Fargo," a dozen Bond films, "Life of Pi," a bunch of Marvel films, documentaries like "RBG," "Lord of the Rings" and more, it would be hard to be left unentertained for the five-hour flight.

alaska airlines seat map airbus a321

You can browse by the usual categories but also "Authorized Personnel Only" and "Find Your Wing Woman" (for films with female leads).

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

TV series included titles like "Friends," "Black-ish," "Empire," "The Simpsons" and "How I Met Your Mother." Some series had full seasons, including "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" and "Friends," but others had only one episode (like "The Simpsons"). TV shows were sorted by channel and genre and included cartoons

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

There was also a collection of audible books on tape and a kids section.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

And there was a flight tracker with a semi-interactive map, plus a food-and-drink menu with information about ingredients and which options were available on which flights (also included in the seatback magazine). Unlike Virgin America, however, you couldn't order food or drinks through this interface.

Upon selecting a movie, I got a pop-up that directed me to the Gogo entertainment app. It was slightly convoluted but intuitive enough to follow. A 30-second ad followed before playback of selected content.

As noted above, there was a nifty minitable — let's call it a ledge — that provided a space to rest a phone or tablet. A spring mechanism above effectively gripped tablets and prevented them from falling.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

Without a tablet, I watched on my laptop, and made sure to visit the Alaska website before the flight to see what I needed ensure it would work. I needed an updated version of Adobe player (which they outlined).

A couple times, I paused playback and the movie reset, reloading the page and prompting the same 30-second ad. Slightly annoying, but not a deal breaker.

All in all, the system worked well, although it could make multitasking tricky if you wanted to work while you watched on your computer. And, unlike some airlines , content resumed where I had left it when exiting playback to check the inflight map.

Alaska offers actual internet access for purchase on flights, too, with different options. At $6.50 for an hourly pass and $20 for the full flight, I found the rates relatively reasonable considering some competitors. United, for example, charged an egregious $35 for a flight pass on that recent coast-to-coast flight. I purchased one to demo the Wi-Fi, and results were promising. Netflix, Facebook, Instagram and Chrome loaded with ease. Streaming was HD, too.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

Note that iMessage, Facebook messenger and WhatsApp are all complimentary (no photo or video, though), and you get free Wi-Fi if you're a T-Mobile customer. You just need to activate texting at alaskawifi.com once connected to the inflight Wi-Fi to access the other Wi-Fi purchase options.

[flight_stats ticket-class="econ" review-stat-section="Food and Beverage" tpg-rating="5" tpg-rating-max="15" live-tv="0" tailcam="0" headphones="0" comp-meal="0" meals-purchase="Yes" comp-alcohol="No" extra-pillows="0" turndown-service="0" /]

Almost immediately after clearing 10,000 feet, flight attendants began the first of several "water services." A more typical drinks service would follow a little while later, but I appreciated this first service, especially considering the long ground delay and that full drink service can take awhile, especially for folks like me towards the back of the plane.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

While no meals would be served on this flight (unlike Delta ), food was available for purchase. A buy-on-board menu listed options for food offerings, which depend on route, time of day and duration.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

Most "snacks" are available on flights of at least 1.5 hours, with more robust meals like sandwiches, salad and cheese plates on flights of two-to-three hours or more.

About an hour after takeoff, drink service reached my seat, with complimentary cookies and food for purchase. Curious about food on this route, I asked for a salad. Unfortunately, there were neither salads nor sandwiches left. I opted for the protein platter (consisting of red pepper hummus, pita, cheese, grilled chicken, almonds, cage-free hardboiled egg and carrot), which was $9.50. The Alaska Airlines Visa card earns 20% back on inflight purchases if you choose to make one.

(Photo by Wallace Cotton/The Points Guy)

The hummus tasted about as good as it looked: texturally sound, but I found it to be too tangy and overall unappealing. The rest of the food was okay. Not gross or inedible, just not fresh and a pretty small portion. I wouldn't get it again; maybe try the fruit and cheese platter if you're hungry. Passengers can also reserve food online up to 12 hours prior to a flight.

Cabin crew came through with water about once per hour, with another full drink service about halfway through the flight, plus one more about an hour and a half after that.

Alaska Airlines receives awards for good service, and from this flight, it's well-earned. Cabin crew were friendly and efficient without seeming rushed or dejected. As with any economy flight, I applaud airlines that offer drink service beyond the one or two offered inflight: coming down the aisle with water goes a long way, even if you're carrying a water bottle. With about a water service per hour, Alaska is paying attention to the little things, and it shows.

Overall impression

In the end, AS 1024 landed behind schedule, and after having to be towed into the way-too-small T7, we clocked in at 40 minutes late. But I had anticipated that, and chose the earlier flight out of SFO for this very reason.

My first flight on Alaska was a positive one. With no middle seat occupant the seat no doubt felt more spacious, but it was clean nonetheless, surprisingly comfortable and well-padded, with two functioning charging ports. Plus I just love that ambient lighting.

Alaska doesn't have built-in entertainment screens on its planes, but it does have the BYOD down. For your own sake do some quick research before your flight to be sure you're prepared. Wi-Fi worked seamlessly, and, even though I didn't like the food that I ate, it wasn't outrageously expensive, and the other options could have been more satisfying.

While I might choose a different carrier for the built-in screen and perhaps a free meal, I would by no means avoid Alaska in the transcon market, except maybe if I were scheduled on the narrower 737. Indeed, considering the miles you're earning are based on actual distance and can be used for some of the best partner awards in the world, I will seriously consider Alaska on my next transcontinental trip.

Airbus A321 Seat Map with Airline Configuration

Do you know same aircraft model can have different seating layouts and configurations? Aircraft manufacturing companies including Airbus and Boeing customize seating layouts as per their customers’ requirements.

Aircraft seating arrangements are primarily classified into three major types namely First-class, business class and economy class. These seats are usually arranged as single-aisle or twin-aisle in rows across the aircraft’s fuselage. Also, the categorization may vary with different airline companies.

Besides, Narrow-body and wide-body jets have distinct seating layouts and designs. Today, we will be discussing Airbus A321 Seat Map with airline configuration.

Without further ado, let’s get started with some basic information on Airbus A321.

Seat map Airbus A321neo “Alaska Airlines”. Best seats in the plane

Alaska Airlines may accommodate 185 passengers on the airplane Airbus A321.

Seat map of the of Airbus A321 (321)

alaska airlines seat map airbus a321

Airbus A321 operated by Alaska Airlines offers seats of three classes: first, premium and economy.

First class seats are located in the first two rows of the airplane and have 2-2 configuration. The width of these seats is 21 inches as compared to the seats of premium and economy that have 17.7 inches width.

Noise from the galley and lavatory and lack of floor storage during take-off and landing may be bothersome for passengers of the seats of the 1st row .

Behind the seats of the first class 18 seats of premium class are located. There are totally 3 rows here per 6 seats in each. These seats are designated as premium seats because they offer 6 extra inches of legroom. The seats of the 3rd row have some disadvantages: no floor storage during take-off and landing and location of tray tables in the bulkhead.

Economy class offers 159 seats. First 2 rows of the economy class are located before the first exit row. Recline of the seats of the 7th row may be limited because of the exit row located behind.

Behind the exit row 13 rows more rows of economy class seats are located. First row of the section has 3-2 configuration, the last row contains 2 seats and 11 rows have 3-3 configuration.

Passengers of the seats of the 8th row will take advantage of additional legroom. However, these seats have no floor storage during take-off and landing. Anyway, these seats are considered good seats as well as the seat 9 that also features extra legroom. Among disadvantages of this seat: reduced width because of the tray tables located in armrests and lack of floor storage during take-off and landing.

Due to the lavatory wall located behind the seats 19ABC have limited recline and when the seats in front are in reclining position passengers of these seats will have less personal space. Noise from the lavatory may also cause discomfort.

Close location of the lavatory is also the main disadvantage of the seats 19D and 20D . Because of the exit row located behind the seat 20D also is less reclining than standard seats. That is why these seats are considered bad seats.

The other 13 rows of economy class seats are located behind the second exit row. The seats of the 21st row and the seat 22A offer extra space for passengers’ legs. However, there are some disadvantages: as the tray tables and TV displays are built-in the armrests making them immovable and thus reducing the width, also these seats have no floor storage during take-off and landing. Lavatories located in front is one more disadvantage of the seats 21BC .

The main disadvantage of the seat 32C is proximity of the lavatory.

Limited recline, reduced personal space and noise from the lavatory area located behind make the seats 32DEF and 33ABC bad seats.

Simple Flying

American airlines airbus a321 allegedly flies for 2 weeks with broken first class seat.

The airline told Simple Flying the seat has now been repaired.

  • An American Airlines Airbus A321 flew with a broken first class seat for many days, and several people claim to have flown on the same plane.
  • American Airlines confirmed that the seat has now been repaired.
  • The carrier has delayed its new Flagship Business Suite and has not provided a timeline for their launch.

According to some posts online, American Airlines has been flying an Airbus A321 with a broken first class seat for a couple of weeks, attracting significant criticism.

Flying with a broken seat

Broken things in aircraft interiors are rare, at least not in the United States. Airlines typically have spare parts for anything that breaks so the aircraft can remain in normal operations. Grounded aircraft do not make an airline any money, nor do broken seats, but it seems that American Airlines flew a plane around with a broken seat for several days.

Three days ago, Brandon Mueller shared a photo on Facebook of a broken first class seat on an American Airlines Airbus A321. Another user commented, "Heading to Florida? I was on that plane 2 weeks ago. Good to see it still hasn’t been fixed." Several others reported flying on the same aircraft recently. Mueller's photo shows a first class seat with no seatback and a sign that says 'do not occupy' and the seat behind this one was also blocked off.

The plane in question is an eight-year-old Airbus A321, delivered in September 2015, registered as N148AN. Mueller's flight took place on April 26 from Orlando International Airport to Philadelphia International Airport, operating as AA563. Simple Flying contacted the airline for a statement, and a spokesperson said the seat had been fixed. After analyzing flight data, it seems that the A321 seat change likely occurred at the airline's main hub, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). On the 27th, it spent three hours on the ground between flights and then, after a turn to Cancun, was on the ground overnight.

American did not confirm how long the aircraft flew with a broken seat, so the only information available is what people said on the Facebook post.

Recent American Airlines news

Speaking of first class, American has delayed the launch of its newest premium product, the Flagship Business Suites. Unveiled in 2022, the new product will feature privacy doors, a first for an American carrier, when installed. The airline anticipated launching the new seats on a Boeing 787-9 on its inaugural flight from DFW to Brisbane Airport in October. Last week, American said the new seats would not be available on the DFW-BNE inaugural and did not provide a timeline for their launch.

Boeing Delays Force American Airlines To Push Launch Of New Business Class Suites And Reduce International Network

The new cabin was supposed to be available on new Boeing 787-9 deliveries this year and will also be installed on some Boeing 777-300ERs. Until last week, American was expecting six 787s from Boeing this year, but troubles at the manufacturer led the airline to halve the number of expected planes. Because of the delays, it was forced to switch up its long-haul network once again.

American is also expecting new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft but is evaluating whether it will need to change its network operated by narrowbodies. No changes have been made at this time, but that can change, as several airlines have had to do, like Southwest Airlines, which last week announced it had to pull out of several airports.

Portland, Oregon, USA - March 15, 2024: A Delta Airbus A319 landing at PDX in bright evening ... [+] sunlight.

It’s that time of year again when both students and airlines get their report cards. J.D. Power just released its 2024 edition of the North America Airline Satisfaction Study.

Delta and Southwest Airlines came out best, or as a cynic might say, least-worst, among North American airlines. Delta comes out on top in both the first/business segment and the premium economy segment, while Southwest comes out on top in the economy/basic economy segment.

The survey has been redesigned since last year, making potential year-over-comparison difficult. But the basics are similar; the J.D. Power study examines passenger satisfaction with airline carriers in North America based on performance in seven core dimensions.

The seven dimensions are airline staff; digital tools; ease of travel; level of trust; on-board experience; pre/post-flight experience; and value for price paid. Passengers were surveyed on their experiences in First/Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy/Basic Economy. They were asked to rate their experience as poor, just OK, good, great, excellent and perfect.

It’s been a tough year for airlines, as domestic air passenger volume went up 9.4% year over year,, while airlines struggled with pilot shortages, cancellations, delays, and shortfalls in aircraft deliveries. Boeing’s woes are well known, affecting many domestic carriers that rely on the 737MAX like Southwest. But Boeing’s sole major competitor, Airbus, is also backed up delivering its A321 aircraft as well.

Michael Taylor, senior managing director of travel, hospitality, retail and customer service at J.D. Power adds, “COVID was a huge disruptor. Hot meals and other on-board services have not come back as far as they were before COVID.”

Nonetheless, according to the study, big investments by airlines in staff training and efforts to improve the overall flight experience with friendly, attentive service are helping some airlines deliver good customer experiences despite the crowds.

Delta Air Lines ranks highest in customer satisfaction in the first/business segment with a score of 743. JetBlue Airways (736) ranks second.

Delta also ranked highest in customer satisfaction in premium economy for a second consecutive year, with a score of 716. Alaska Airlines (687) ranks second and American Airlines (684) ranks third.

Southwest Airlines ranks highest in customer satisfaction in the economy/basic economy segment for a third consecutive year, with a score of 685. Delta Air Lines (651) ranks second and Allegiant Air (633) ranks third.

On the flip side, the bottom performer in the first/business segment was Air Canada, with a 629 score. That was over 110 points lower than top-rated Delta. Air Canada also brought up the rear in customer satisfaction in premium economy, scoring 628, almost 90 points behind leader Delta.

Air Canada’s performance on the study may have been related to the carrier’s posting the worst on-time performance among large airlines in North America in 2023. Air Canada landed on time on just 63% of its flights, placing it last among North America’s ten largest airlines. The top airlines in this key category, Delta and Alaska, were on-time 85% and 82%, respectively.

In economy, Air Canada scored a 542, 140 points below leader Southwest. It was saved from the bottom by budget airlines Spirit, 507, and Frontier, 472.

Taylor says Spirit and Frontier are “bare bones airlines that get you there and back. They want to be the cheaper fare between two points. So you get coupon clippers; people fly them for price. They’re not happy, and the price is not going to make them happier.”

Interestingly, the top two airlines on the J.D. Power study each also dealt with significant customer service problems in 2023.

Changes Delta made to its SkyMiles program, particularly with Medallion qualification, proved so unpopular with frequent flyers that CEO Ed Bastian had to apologize. Delta baggage fees were also a subject of complaint.

Southwest suffered flight delays, luggage pileups, people sleeping on the floor at airports, cancellations, and the Feds scrutinizing schedule issues. The airline also didn’t get all the 737MAX aircraft it wanted due to Boeing’s woes, limiting expansion.

Nonetheless, both airlines ranked highly with consumers. Despite the SkyMiles snafu, Taylor says, “Delta is significantly ahead of everyone. The difference were the people scores. They spent a lot of time and millions of dollars training people to be nicer and handle crowds better. They use people’s names, say ‘we appreciate your business.’”

JetBlue surprisingly finished second in first/business. Taylor said, “People love that Mint product, and it has won JetBlue a lot of customers for the last two years.”

In economy, Southwest won because “they hire outstanding people who can interact with crowds—extroverts. They hire for attitude—I believe they invented the phrase.” Southwest can have problems and still win the study, says Taylor, as many people will not have experienced the publicized problem. Ultimately, “People want to have a good time on the flight, rather than be treated as a bunch of cattle.”

The other two of the Big Four U.S. airlines, United and American, delivered results below the segment average on the study. Taylor says much of the problem has to do with “people issues.”

“United has taken their eye off the ball at the experience they are delivering. They do OK in First Class; they don’t do as well people wise in the back. They need to return more focus to returning the passenger experience.

“American is doing well with people scores in the back of the cabin, well with digital tools. The on-board experience is uneven.”

He notes, “The big takeaway from this year’s study is the power of people to positively influence the overall flight experience. Airlines that are investing in staff training and recruitment are finding ways to overcome the negative effects of crowded gates and planes simply by being nice to their customers.”

Of course, “You have to get people in the seats to make money.” In a football analogy, Taylor adds, “You have to do the blocking and tackling, like your on-time performance, getting pilots, getting aircraft, servicing the network you have. If your team can’t ‘block or tackle,’ it doesn’t matter how good your quarterback is.”
