  • 2. Find the best location for your coffee shop

To be successful, you need the right location for your coffee shop. You want something that fits the following parameters:

  • Centrally located and easy to access
  • Highly visible and experiences consistent foot traffic
  • A space that fits your vision

Jack Wilson, the owner of Radio Coffee and Beer, warns that finding this dream spot won’t happen overnight.

His team scoured city after city, scouting each location, even going so far as to count pedestrian traffic by hand. He was looking for a former restaurant space, so he didn’t have to remodel everything from scratch. Finally, one day when he dropped his keys on the sidewalk he noticed a tiny “for sale” sign in a former tavern window. After months of searching, he’d found his spot.

Keep in mind that effective restaurant spaces are highly sought after and difficult to find. It may take a while to find just the right spot, but for a business type that benefits from ease of access and casual traffic, it’s worth taking your time to find the right spot.

  • 3. Create a floor plan

A solid and welcoming floor plan is vital for a coffee shop. You want customers to have space to form a line, employees to have the materials they need within reach for quick access and a comfortable seating area. As with finding a location, it will take some time to produce a good floor plan.

According to Wilson you should, “walk yourself through every scenario you can think of,” he says. “If you’re making coffee, what needs to be near you? If you’re a customer, what do you want in a seating area? Visualize everything you can and start putting those ideas down on paper.”

Design your cafe floor plan online

Here are a few free websites you can use to kickstart your planning process. Once you’ve drawn up an initial sketch on paper, get online and make it a reality.

Autodesk Homestyler (free): This is probably my favorite option. You can either start designing your floor from scratch or choose from a gallery of designs to personalize with your own look and feel. In fact, there’s even an option to experiment with real-world products and brands. When you’re done, you’ll be able to share the design as part of your planning process. It can even be used as part of your pitch to potential investors.

Floorplanner: This software is clean and simple to use, with plenty of drag-and-drop furniture and other items to fill out your design. It allows for both 2-D and 3-D visualization of your designs and can be easily printed out if needed.

Gliffy: While it may not be the go-to floor plan solution, I’ve included Gliffy on this list anyway, due to it being a well-known diagram and flowchart application. If you’ve used it before, you may want to give it a try to minimize the learning curve and jump right into designing. While you’re at it, you can even plot out your SWOT analysis.

  • 4. Hire an accountant

One of the best pieces of advice Wilson says he can offer a new coffee shop owner is to turn your books over to an accountant. Aside from taking valuable time away from the business, having a numbers expert works in your favor.

“You won’t be as hard on yourself as you sometimes might need to be,” Wilson says. “Plus, you will make assumptions that an accountant wouldn’t make.”

In reality, your accountant is really your small business consultant. Make sure you find someone who believes in you and can help accomplish your business goals. If you’re unable to hire an accountant right away, you can also look to an online option like QuickBooks . The benefit of online accounting software is that you’ll have direct visibility into the day-to-day finances of your business.

Both are great options for managing your finances, and the decision fully depends on your situation and level of expertise.

  • 5. Attain funding from local sources

Finding startup funds for a coffee shop can be difficult. Renson suggests talking with friends and family about investing in your coffee shop first. Present a solid business plan to them and ask them to invest in your business.

If funding via your family isn’t an option, or if you need more cash than your family can provide, Renson suggests looking into local loan options. In some cases, cities offer business assistance programs to offset costs. Consider an SBA-backed loan or see if a local bank or credit union is an option. Keep in mind that any bank loan will require you to show evidence that your business has some traction already. They want to know you’re a reasonable risk. So if you’re not up and running yet, there are other options for bootstrapping your business that you might consider.

  • 6. Save money for your personal expenses

When identifying startup costs , don’t forget that you need to consider your own personal expenses alongside your business. All of your time and energy will be devoted to your new business, which potentially won’t be profitable for around six-months, even if you start bringing in revenue immediately.

So, plan ahead. Renson suggests making sure you set aside enough money to cover your personal expenses for at least six months if not longer. You’ll need to decide whether it’s possible to run your coffee shop while working another job or side gig or if you’ll be able to solely focus on your new business.

You will also want to understand the concept of cash flow . Considering that over half of the businesses that fail are profitable on paper when they fail, you’ll want to be sure you understand how much cash you’ll need on hand.

  • 7. Shop around for everything

While you’re in the planning and funding stages and working through your finances,  keep a list or spreadsheet of all the startup expenses you’re looking at so you can compare prices.

Before you buy, try to get at least two price quotes for every item so you’re not losing money on basic necessities or recurring costs. Use the internet to your advantage and look for the best prices on everything from comfy chairs to espresso machines.

  • 8. Network your heart out

Having a hot location and brewing superior coffee will only get you so far. You need to network to maintain a connection to the area and to attract more customers. Look into joining the local chamber of commerce, a business association, or partner with a local charity. Be visible in your local community and get dedicated partners long before you open your doors.

9. Develop your marketing plan — before you open

If you start marketing the day you open, you’re already behind. On opening day , you want people excited to come in. You’ll want to develop your marketing strategy and begin advertising to potential customers several months before opening.

Affordable marketing options to consider:

  • Partner with other local businesses by providing free coffee in exchange for on-site advertising.
  • Leverage social media as direct communication with your customers.
  • Participate in local events, providing free specialty coffee samples leading up to your grand opening.
  • Do a small direct mail or email campaign that sends coupons to local residents or businesses.

10. Don’t just focus on the interior of the building

  • 11. Have a positive attitude

Like every business, you’ll face challenges to get your shop off the ground. Renson says keeping a positive attitude when things aren’t going your way is a must. Not only does it benefit your outlook, but it showcases strong leadership to your employees and a welcoming presence for customers.

Fake it if you have to. If you get in the habit of keeping an optimistic attitude, even if it’s less than genuine to start, you’ll eventually teach yourself to stay upbeat and will keep those around you optimistic and ready to work.

  • 12. Hire slowly

You need help manning the register, waiting on customers, and making drinks, but don’t hire too many people too fast. Renson suggests hiring a few friends, or neighbors who will volunteer to help you out for the first few weeks. Slowly, bring on staff as needed.

Hiring trusted staff can be tough. No matter how well someone does in an interview, you don’t know how well he or she fits until they’re on the floor. Keep a close eye on the register, Renson suggests, and don’t be afraid to let people go if they are hurting the business.

  • 13. Set high standards

It’s okay to set high standards for your employees and overall business. That’s not to say that you should micromanage your employees. You’ll want to focus on effectively training your staff at the start and building an effective workflow that encourages collaboration and high-quality work. Their ability to make good coffee drinks quickly will have an impact on customer loyalty and satisfaction.

Starting an independent coffee shop is hard work, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a long-term struggle. If you focus on establishing these core pieces while developing your coffee shop business plan, you’ll set yourself up for success early on.

For example, to estimate your number of daily customers, you can look at the number of people in a certain age tranche, living in your neighborhood, and start making assumptions based on that. Let’s take an example:

Suppose there are 10,000 young adults between the age of 18 and 35 living in your vicinity, and let’s assume that only 5% of them will visit your coffee shop at least once a month (some will visit almost every day, some will visit weekly and some others only 1 time per month); this works out to 500 regular monthly customers. Now if we assume that each customer will visit the coffee shop twice a month on average, and if we assume the average order value per customer to be around 10 USD, this implies a monthly estimated revenue of 500 x 2 x 10 = 10,000 USD. Now that you have estimated the revenue for one month, you can easily forecast your annual revenue. But of course make sure to also take into account the seasonality (for example, during summer time, your customers might leave the town to go on holidays and this might reduce your average monthly revenue in July and August…etc.)

The purpose is to build a revenue model that is as close to reality as possible and one way to do that is to be as conservative as possible. By conservative we mean: Don’t go overboard with the number of expected customers, their frequency of ordering or the average spending per customer. Always use reasonable assumptions that make sense and that are backed with some reliable statistics or data whenever possible.

Coffee Shop Financial Plan Sample: Income Statement or Profit & Loss

Now that you have modeled your Coffee Shop’s cost and revenue, it is time to project your income statement, also called profit and loss statement of P&L. To start off, check the P&L example taken from a coffee shop financial plan sample below.

So, to simplify things, you can think of the income statement as a series of subtractions applied to your revenue to find out how much profits your business has really created. Then, if you divide your net profit by your revenue, you get your net margin. The higher the net margin the higher your coffee shop’s profitability.

To understand the nuance, let’s take a general example from the consulting industry: Suppose you sent an invoice of 1,000 USD, dated March 15 th , to your client after completing a consulting project. Your client receives the invoice and then calls you to confirm he will pay his dues during the first week of April. Comes April, you check your bank account, and you notice indeed a wire transfer of 1,000 USD dated April 5 th .

So, what did actually happen? Accounting wise, you should record 1,000 USD as a revenue for the month of March in your income statement, while you should record 1,000 USD as a cash inflow for the month of April in your cash flow statement. This means that cash flows do not necessarily follow the same recording date of income and payments. Income and expenses usually follow the invoice date while cash inflows and outflows follow the actual clearing or payment date.

So what is the cash flow statement comprised of?

It is simply the summary of three types of cash flow movements over a certain period of time:

The cash flows from operating activities: Here, cash inflows are money collected from customer orders and cash outflows are payments made to pay for COGS, raw materials and external suppliers.

The cash flows from investing activities: Here, cash inflows are money collected from the sale of a certain asset or capex item (such as an old espresso machine) and cash outflows are money paid to acquire new assets (such as a new espresso machine).

The cash flows from financing activities: Here, cash inflows are new funding received from business loans or equity investors and cash outflows are payments made to partners in the form of dividends for example.

Investors focus a lot on the ability of a business to generate solid and tangible cash flows which means that it is not enough to have a profitable coffee shop, what’s even more important is to grow an F&B venture that generates consistent and significant cash flows.

Here’s how to create a budget and use it to make the best decisions today, tomorrow and in the future.

What is a business budget?

Simply put, a budget is a spending plan based on your business’ income and expenses. It shows your available capital, estimates spending and assists in predicting revenue. The information in your budget can help you plan your company’s next moves. A budget looks at activities for a specified time. Think of it as a tool to help you allocate resources toward the strategic priorities in your business plan.

What are the benefits of creating a business budget?

Budgeting enables you to allocate financial resources more effectively, track variances and make changes to your spending plan as needed. A budget provides a much-needed assist in maintaining daily operations, giving you the intel to deploy your cash more strategically so you don’t face a cash flow crunch. It can identify when you need to raise financing. Debt is a fact of life in many businesses. A budget can help you manage debts with controlled and planned financial activities.

A budget can also help you stay ready for the unexpected. Staying within your budget and creating a safety net for emergencies will give you a firmer financial foundation.

Types of business budgets

When it comes to business budgets, it’s not one and done. There are several types that may be helpful in your business.

Master budget

This type of budget uses inputs from financial statements, your cash forecast and your financial plan to create a single document you can use to keep your finger on the pulse of your business. Your management team can use it to plan the activities needed to reach business goals. Typically, small businesses use spreadsheets to create their master budgets or consider using budgeting software too, as it may help minimize mistakes.

Operating budget

This budget shows your projected revenue and expenses for a given period. Think of it as a profit and loss report , but for the future. The operating budget includes fixed and variable costs, as well as non-operating expenses. Capital expenditures are usually excluded from an operating budget. Each line item should be backed up with key details.

Fixed costs occur monthly.

Variable costs, like utilities , change depending on factors like usage.

Capital costs are one-time expenses, such as the purchase of a building.

The operating budget gives you a reality check on whether you’re spending according to plan. While this budget is often prepared at the start of each year, don’t set it and forget it. Update it throughout the year, be it monthly or quarterly, so you always know where your business stands.

Capital budget

Companies sometimes create a capital budget when they are looking to make a large purchase, such as a large piece of factory equipment or a new technology system that will require a substantial investment. This allows the finance team to determine the impact on cash flow and plan accordingly.

Cash budget or cash flow budget

New owner plans to bring craft cocktails to popular downtown coffee shop

E ven as Robby Dow was establishing the innovative bar program at Olivero restaurant in Wilmington last year, he was also thinking about opening his own place. When he connected with Chris Batten and Bespoke Coffee & Dry Goods at 202 Princess St. in downtown Wilmington, he knew he’d found the right spot.

He took over the business mid-March. 

“It’s great,” Dow said. “I love that it’s downtown ... and I think this Princess Street intersection is really special.” 

In the coming weeks and months, Bespoke will continue to operate as it has been with the same staff, Dow said. Eventually, there will be a short renovation period so he can update the bar space to include cocktail service. 

“Big picture, that’s the plan,” he said.  

During his four years in Brooklyn, Dow earned accolades as the bartender/beverage director for Grand Army Bar. More recently, he’s been working with Sunny Gerhart and Lauren Krall Ivey at Olivero, which opened in September at 522 S. Third St. 

There, he created a program driven by sherry, vermouth and Italian amaro that uses modern techniques to update classic cocktails, Gerhart said.   

“(It's) a great complement to the Spanish, Italian and New Orleans dishes Lauren and I are cooking and modernizing in the kitchen,” he said. “We’re fortunate to have a craft cocktail talent like Robby in Wilmington and are excited to see him expand on his own here in town.”  

Dow isn’t ready to reveal too many details about what he has planned for Bespoke but said it would include some new things for the area. 

“I would say my background in cocktails is about technique,” Dow said. “I’m always passionate about world class cocktails that are still approachable.” 

Batten opened Bespoke in 2015 and was one of the first coffee shops to add beer and wine during evening hours. He also acquired the restaurant space next door, once home to Port City Cheesesteaks. (For a time, Savorez was serving breakfast burritos and more there .) Eventually, Dow will also extend the hours at Bespoke, and find the right food fit for the space, too.

“It would be great if there could be both a daytime presence and a dinner concept, too,” Dow said. “It’s also a great space for a pop-up.”

Eventually, through lots of trial and error as well as perseverance and creativity I did find a way to not only survive but also thrive in the coffee/espresso industry even while those corporate coffee chains stayed put. During those years I learned to adapt and always faced new challenges. It was not always easy, however, in the end, I was the sole survivor independent coffee shop within a 10-mile radius of my location. Just two corporate coffee chains and I were left after that year. All told the corporate coffee chains took down over 15 small independent coffee shops and kiosks and I was the last one standing and thriving.

Along the years I meet others with the same passion for coffee and I quickly learned that it is not only “how good a barista is” that makes a coffee shop successful, but the business side of coffee as well.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has proposed a series of painful budget cuts to close the state's growing deficit

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California's budget deficit is at least $45 billion, a shortfall so large it prompted Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday to propose painful spending cuts impacting immigrants, kindergarteners and low-income parents seeking child care in a state often lauded for having the world's fifth-largest economy.

Officially, Newsom said the state's deficit is $27.6 billion. But really, it's closer to $45 billion when including previous spending reductions that Newsom and the state Legislature agreed to in March. Including reductions in public education spending, which Newsom has not included, the deficit would be even billions of dollars more, according to recent analysis by the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office.

The size of the deficit is important as it will shape the national perspectives of Newsom, who is a top surrogate for President Joe Biden's reelection campaign and who is widely believed to harbor presidential aspirations of his own. Newsom has spent much of his time in office basking in the glow of historic budget surpluses that allowed him to greatly expand state spending. But back-to-back budget deficits — with more on the horizon — are testing California's commitment to those increases.

So far, Newsom has not gutted some of his splashiest policy advancements, including free kindergarten for all 4-year-olds and free health insurance for all low-income adults regardless of their immigration status. But as Friday's proposal showed, Newsom is willing to chip away at some of those promises to balance the budget.

While Newsom has not taken away health insurance from anyone, he proposed the state stop paying for health care workers to care for some 14,000 disabled immigrants in their home. That would save the state $94.7 million. While he hasn't pulled back the state's commitment to expanded kindergarten, he proposed eliminating $550 million that would have helped school districts build the facilities they need to teach all of those extra students.

After promising to pay for child care for another 146,000 children from low-income families, Newsom on Friday proposed pausing that expansion at 119,000. And after promising to boost how much money doctor's get to treat Medicaid patients, Newsom on Friday proposed canceling $6.7 billion that had been set aside to do that.

The cuts prompted outrage from across the political and ideological spectrum. Anthony Wright, executive director of the consumer advocacy group Health Access California, said the removal of in-home care for immigrants with disabilities would result in those people becoming “further impoverished or end up in much more expensive nursing home care.”

Yolanda Thomas, a member of the Child Care Providers United negotiations team, said cutting the child care slots means “we cannot build a stronger economy when our lowest paid workers ... don't have somewhere safe to send their children during their shifts.”

For every question on Friday, Newsom had a similar response.

“I prefer not to make this cut. These are programs, propositions that I have long advanced, many of them,” he said. “But you've got to do it. You have to be responsible.”

Before the coronavirus pandemic, California's revenues were growing at about 5% per year. From 2019-20 through 2021-22, revenues grew an astounding 55%. That's because California got a lot of money from the federal government to blunt the impact of the pandemic. And it's because the stock market had historic increases, fueling a rapid expansion of wealth among California's richest residents — generating a tax windfall for the state.

State budgeting is a guessing game, where governors and lawmakers have to predict how much money they will have and plan to spend it. Following the bountiful years of the pandemic, California's guesses have been way off. The Newsom administration now predicts state revenues will be $83.1 billion lower than they thought for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 fiscal years.

“If you knew that those were unrealistically high and totally unsustainable revenue levels, why wouldn't you put a little bit more in the reserves,” said state Sen. Roger Niello, a Republican and vice chair of the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee. “If that's the case, you know it's going to come crashing down and you are going to have a big deficit to cover.”

Newsom defended California's previous budget actions, noting the state Constitution required the state to return a big chunk of that surplus to taxpayers in the form of rebates. Newsom said it “provided a lot of support at the time to people who needed money.”

“I feel like we were doing the best we could under that circumstance,” he said.

Newsom on Friday repeatedly vowed he would not sign a sweeping tax increase on individuals. But he did propose suspending a popular tax deduction for businesses, which many see as a tax increase.

In total, Newsom is proposing $32.8 billion in cuts over two years, including eliminating 10,000 unfilled state jobs and an 8% cut to state operations — including things like eliminating landlines. He promised there would be no layoffs, furloughs or salary cuts for the state's more than 221,000 state workers.

Democratic legislators applauded Newsom’s effort to deal with multiple years of deficits and vowed to protect spending for social safety net fundings and classrooms.

“Nobody knows what challenges California may face, so we must always stay prepared,” Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas and Assembly Budget Chair Jesse Gabriel said in a joint statement. ___ This story has been corrected to show that Newsom proposed eliminating $550 million for school facilities, not $500 million.

We stopped at the Red Barn Produce to get some asparagus and were told about the bakery by the owner. Since it was morning and a pastry and coffee sounded good we walked over and although small we were not disappointed. We bought an eclair,scone and coffee. The French cream in the eclair was to die for. If your in the area and looking for a great pastry this is a a place to stop

Red Barn French Deli & Coffee Shop in Fruitland opened about 5 months. It is owned and operated by Juan Bendix. His mother Ana owns Red Barn produce stand, which is located directly behind Juan's business. I visited it for the first time on 9/13/23. I ordered a slice of Quiche Aux Legumes ($6), which includes zucchini, onion, bell pepper, artichoke, Monterey Jack cheese, and oregano. The quiche was outstanding!!! It was chock-full of a delicious mixture of fresh vegetables and cheese. The crust was perfect. It was buttery and tender, just as it should be. I loved that Juan added some additional cheese on top of the quiche. Next time I visit, I plan on getting a slice of all three flavors of quiche to go. With the exception of the eclairs, the pastries are not French. The French influence is seen on the menu with the French crêpes, and the Breakfast, Lunch/Dinner menu. Red Barn French Deli & Coffee Shop in is located at 6525, US-95, in Fruitland. it is open seven days a week. I've included a photo of the business hours. Trevor now asks Lord Cameron about the local elections, at which the Conservatives lost hundreds of council seats and key mayoral races.

The foreign secretary says Rishi Sunak "is a good man, doing a great job at a difficult time".

He adds: "We saw [this] week that his economic plans are coming right. You know, with the 0.6% growth, much more than people expected, more than the IMF expected. 

"And you've got the situation now where you can see inflation coming down. I think interest rates are going to come down.

"Taxes are coming down, the economy's growing. And I think you've got a very clear choice opening up. And that's what happens as you get to the end of a parliament. 

"It stops being a referendum on the government every day, and it starts being a choice between two teams."

Asked about the timing of the election, Lord Cameron says: "He said second half of the year. And I think that's absolutely right.

"Because... you can see the economic plan is working."

Lord Cameron is asked about Ukraine - after reports that Russia has made significant advances in the years-long war overnight.

The foreign secretary says this is an "extremely dangerous" moment.

"This only underlines that this is an unjustified, illegal invasion by Putin into an independent, sovereign country," he says.

"And he's now, as it were, invaded it again from the north of Kharkiv. We must do everything we can to help the Ukrainians.

"That's why it's so essential we've given our £3bn a year package, and we've said that that's going to go on year after year. We're encouraging others to do the same. 

"And, crucially, the work we've done to encourage the Americans to come forward with their package. I mean, it's sad that it's taken long to come, but it will make a difference."

So has the American input - a $61bn package - come too late?

"It would have been better if it came earlier, because there's no doubt that Ukraine was suffering in the land war, as it were," he says.

"We all need to do more, that is what the UK is doing, we're leading once again. First to do tanks, first to do anti-tank weapons, first to do long-range artillery.

"Now the first to say here is a package that isn't just this year, it's next year and the year after. But the American money will make a difference - so we've got to get in there, give the Ukrainians the support they need.

"They have no problems - I was there the other day - their morale is still strong, they are still inflicting appalling casualty rates on the Russians.

"If only the Russians could see how many people they are losing.

"If other countries did all the things the UK is doing in terms of long-range weapons, in terms of the training and support. We've just basically got to make our strength count."

On the matter of arms supply to Israel, Lord Cameron is asked why the UK hasn't followed the US lead on an arms sales embargo.

He reiterates that the UK has a "very thorough, very detailed" process to consider whether there is a "clear risk that something that could be exported could lead to a serious violation of international humanitarian law".

Lord Cameron says: "I think America and the UK are in a totally different situations. 

"The United States is a massive bulk state supplier of weapons to Israel, including 1,000lb bombs and all the rest of it. 

"The UK provides less than 1% of Israel's weapons and is not a state supplier. We have a licensing system and those licences can be closed if it's judged there's a serious risk of a serious international human rights violation."

Pressed, Lord Cameron says he was urged to declare an immediate arms embargo a few months ago, and a few days later, a "massive Iranian attack" was launch at Israel.

"I don't think it would have been a wise path, and I still don't think it would be a wise path," he says.

"I mean, if I announced that today, it might help me get through this television interview, but actually it would strengthen Hamas.

"It would weaken Israel. I think it probably makes a hostage deal less likely. 

"So I don't think some sort of political declaration is the right answer. 

"We should stick with our rigorous process of making sure we act within the law."

The conversation with Lord Cameron turns to the conflict in Israel and Gaza, and fears of an Israeli offensive at the Rafah border crossing.

This is the only land border between Gaza and Egypt, and has been crucial for the delivery of aid to Palestinians caught up in the conflict.

The foreign secretary reiterates that a hostage deal is the "right answer" to "try and stop the fighting", which began in October last year.

He tells Sky News: "My view is that the right answer is to try and stop the fighting by having a hostage deal, achieving a pause in the fighting and then using that to build a sustainable ceasefire without going back to further conflict.

"That's what I think is the right answer, and that's why I'm always pushing on the Israelis and on everyone else. 

"But the problem is it goes back to Hamas. 

"Hamas have been offered a deal which would release hundreds of prisoners from Israeli jails, that would provide a pause in the fighting... and they're not taking that deal."

He says, with this in mind, that the question of a ceasefire is "really for Hamas".

"Why are you allowing this suffering to go on when you could stop it now?

"The real pressure should be on Hamas to agree that hostage deal. The fighting could stop tomorrow."

However, he adds it would be wrong for the Israelis to begin an offensive in Rafah "without a plan to protect people".

"In Rafah you've got hundreds of thousands of people who have moved from other parts of Gaza, so it would be extremely dangerous to attempt a major offensive in that way."

First up on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips is Lord Cameron, and they begin their conversation on the defection of Natalie Elphicke to the Labour Party.

The foreign secretary is asked about claims Ms Elphicke lobbied the justice secretary in 2020 to interfere in her then-husband's sex offences trial.

Her spokesperson has dismissed this as "nonsense".

Lord Cameron says: "I have absolutely no idea, so I've got really nothing to add.

"I'm not a fan of defectors, I took over from one in Witney and I think it always leaves a legacy of upset and betrayal and everything else.

"I thought this was just naked opportunism, by Labour as much as anything. This is quite a right-wing Conservative MP suddenly welcomed into the Labour fold having never supported any of their policies, people or approaches.

"The revealing thing is it was a moment where you look at the Labour Party and think - if you don't stand for anything, then you'll fall for stuff like this."

In a dramatic move just moments before Prime Minister's Questions got under way this week, Natalie Elphicke joined Labour as her surprised Conservative colleagues looked on.

What exactly happens when an MP defects to another party?

Ms Elphicke  is far from the first MP to change sides between elections, but it was incredibly rare - until recently - for a member of the governing party to switch to the opposition.

She is the third Tory to do so in just over two years, following  Christian Wakeford in 2022  over the partygate scandal and  Dan Poulter just two weeks ago  over the Tories' handling of the NHS.

Before that, it hadn't happened since 1995, when Alan Howarth became the first ever Conservative to cross to Labour on the eve of his party conference, citing the "divisiveness" of policies under John Major's leadership.

Only three MPs in the past 25 years have gone the other way - from main opposition to government - all leaving the Conservatives to join Labour.

Defecting to smaller parties happens more often, such as moves  from both Conservative and Labour to Change UK  during the Brexit years, or  Douglas Carswell  and  Mark Reckless  heading over to UKIP ahead of the referendum.
