Q.  How does the Carryforward feature in Business First Plus work?

A. The key advantage of this plan starting at AED 110 is that you can carryforward its benefits for 3 months. This means, if you have subscribed to this plan on the 1st of Jan, you are authorized to carryforward the plan’s benefits to ensure all of the remainder allowances of the current month are used until the 30th of April. Similarly, this would continue for the next month, 1st of February until 31st May.

Q.  Can I downgrade/upgrade between Business First Plus base plans?

A. If you are upgrading or downgrading within the Business First Plus Flavors, no exit charges would apply if the online offer has not been redeemed. 

In the case that the online offer has been redeemed, you can upgrade/downgrade to plans only after the completion of the promotional period of two months with the contract being reset and exit charges being applied.

Q. Can I subscribe to any other add-on with an existing add-on activated?

A. Yes, absolutely. Each of the add-ons are independent in nature and users can pick and choose whichever add-ons they require to tailor their plans to suit their requirements.

Q.  What are the exit charges?

A. Exit charges applicable for device and base plans as per the following:

       (i) Exit from the Base Plan only – 1-month of base plan rental fee.

       (ii) Exit from Base plan with a Device - 1-month base plan rental fee + remainder months of rental for device. 

Q. Can I migrate from Business First Plus to any other Business plans? 

A. Yes, you can easily migrate from Business First Plus Plan to any other plan that suits your requirements. Exit charges are subject to upgrade or downgrade and, your contract will reset from the date of migration.

Q.  What happens if I take a Voice add-on on top of my carryforward voice allowance?

A. In this case, Carryforward Allowances will be prioritized.

Etisalat announced the launch of a new mobile plan called Business First for the UAE Small and Medium Business (SMB) sector meeting the growing data and non-stop connectivity requirements of the segment, giving them the flexibility to conduct day-to-day business activities and contributing to their efficiency and productivity.

Etisalat serves close to 300,000 SMB customers in the country working closely with them in their digital transformation journey. In a global study of more than 3,000 SMBs, conducted by analyst firm IDC this year, 39 percent of respondents said active participation in the digital economy will be essential to their company's survival.

"Etisalat works closely with SMBs in the UAE by investing our resources in understanding their requirements to help meet their business needs and to enable them to achieve their organization's strategic goals," said Esam Mahmoud, Acting Senior Vice President, Small and Medium Business, Etisalat.

" The launch of Business First is also in line with Etisalat's strategy of driving the digital future to enable SMBs adopt digitalised processes in their business operations and uncover new revenue streams. Our new 'non-stop data' value proposition will give our customers the flexibility to manage their day-to-day business without facing any obstacles in staying connected while on the move."

The new Business First mobile plan gives SMB customers for the first time ever 'non-stop data' for as low as AED 140 per month, bundled with local voice minutes and intra-company calling minutes. In addition, customers can subscribe to a variety of flexible add-ons to suit their needs, including international calls for just 38 fils per minute, as well as national calls for 18 fils per minute. Etisalat also offers attractive pricing on the monthly packages if customers were to sign up for longer-term contracts.

• Are the unlimited minutes really unlimited? Yes, they are unlimited. However, please note that unlimited minutes are applicable to specific plans such as: AED 325, AED 600 and AED 900 plans.
• What type of calls can I make with the unlimited national minutes? Unlimited national minutes are valid for calls within the UAE only (to fixed or mobile lines). They are not applicable to roaming.
• What type of calls can I make with the unlimited international minutes? Unlimited international minutes can be used for international outgoing calls, from the UAE for the covered destinations. They are not applicable for roaming.
• What destinations can I call with my unlimited international minutes? For BMP 600 and BMP 900 plans, you can use the IDD minutes from the unlimited plans to call any of the 165 destinations in annexure 1. For all other plans, international minutes are applicable to the top 190 destinations. Visit du.ae/idd for the complete list of destinations.
• As an eligible customer, you can choose to subscribe to the plans with either a 12-month contract or without a contract.
• For plans with a 12-month contract, if you cancel before the contract ends, you will be charged a foreclosure fee (one monthly charge of your subscribed plan).
• For plans without a contract, no foreclosure fee will be charged.
• Do all the plans come with an Internet Calling Pack? All plans above AED 200 will include a free Internet Calling subscription.
• Roaming benefits are inclusive only on the AED 900 plan. For all other plans, you are required to subscribe to the roaming service and data or voice bundles.
• Roaming minutes and data benefits can be used in our preferred countries and our roaming partner networks. Visit du.ae/preferredcountries for the full list.
• Bundles with incoming minutes only cover roaming-call-forward charges. Inter operator termination charges [IOT] are not covered
• Incoming and outgoing cover both incoming (roaming-call-forward charges) and outgoing calls. Inter operator termination charges [IOT] are not covered.
• After consuming your plan’s roaming minutes, if any, incoming calls, outgoing calls and data are all charged as per standard rates or Easy Roaming rates, if your Easy Roaming service is active.
• Roaming minutes’ packages are not built on real-time billing; hence consumption of the benefits cannot be tracked and there will be no usage notification, including on full consumption.
• Roaming usage does not include Lebanon and in-flight operators.
• There are some LTE handsets designed to send and receive minor data sessions, even though the mobile data feature is turned off. To avoid these excess data charges, either buy a roaming data bundle or change your device’s network from LTE to 3G
• Non-preferred networks will have standard tariff set out on our website at du.ae/businessroaming . Please select the country from the dropdown list to check the applicable rates.
• We may, at a discretion and without notice, remove or modify any preferred roaming countries and operators. We recommend that, prior to travel, you check the current list on du.ae/businessroaming so you are fully aware on which countries we have roaming partners in and who those operators are.
• What is the charging method? All in-bundle and out-of-bundle charges will be per minute.

• Can I subscribe to device offers with the Business Mobile Plans? Yes, our device instalment offers are available on top of the Business Mobile Plans. Please contact our sales channels for the latest offers on devices.
• Can I upgrade or downgrade my plan within the Business Mobile Plans? You can upgrade to a higher rate plan without any foreclosure fees. However, you have to pay the foreclosure fee for the downgrade.
• Will I still be charged the full monthly fee if my line got suspended within my contract? Yes. Since the plans are associated with a Minimum Term, you will be charged the monthly recurring fee during the suspension.
• What happens after the Minimum Term is complete? You will continue to enjoy your Business Mobile Plan benefits. If you choose to cancel your line after the end of your Minimum Term, no termination fee will apply on your plan. However, if you still have other active contracts such as a device that has not completed its Minimum Term, then a fee will apply.
• Can I still get one of the Business Mobile Plans, if I am an existing Business mobile customer? Yes.
• What is the activation fee? A fee of AED 55 is applicable for the activation of your SIM card.

Dubai's new airport terminal to have more than double current retail space, DDF chief says

Number of employees at the new duty free likely to double to nearly 10,000, outgoing dubai duty free chief colm mcloughlin says.

Dubai's $35 billion passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport is expected to include at least 100,000 square metres of retail space and employ 10,000 people when it opens within 10 years, according to the outgoing boss of Dubai Duty Free.

That is more than double the 40,000 square metres of retail space that Dubai Duty Free currently operates across Dubai International and AI Maktoum International airports and nearly double its workforce of 5,700 staff.

“The new airport announcement is fantastic … I expect business in that time – if you look at continuous growth and passenger spend that will grow – in 10 years, Dubai Duty Free will have $3 billion in annual sales,” Colm McLoughlin, executive vice chairman and chief executive of Dubai Duty Free, told The National.

“ Space is very important. There will be a minimum 100,000 square metres and there will probably at the time be 10,000 staff working for Dubai Duty Free.”

Dubai Duty Free's sales hit a record of Dh7.8 billion ($2.16 billion) in 2023, up 24 per cent on the previous year and an increase of 6.4 per cent on pre-pandemic levels in 2019, thanks to an air travel boom.

The future scale of airport retail operations matches Dubai's expansion ambitions for the new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC).

The airport , spread across 70 square kilometres, will include 400 aircraft gates, five parallel runways and the capacity to handle 150 million passengers annually in its initial phase. Once completed, it will have “the world's largest capacity”, reaching up to 260 million passengers.

Post-retirement plans

Mr McLoughlin offered a glimpse of future airport retail plans after he last week announced plans to retire, following 55 years in the travel retail industry, of which, 41 were spent at the helm of Dubai Duty Free.

He will step down on May 31 after decades of growing Dubai's travel retail to the world's single-largest duty free operation located in one airport.

Ramesh Cidambi, the chief operating officer, will become managing director from June 1.

Mr McLoughlin, 80, said he will remain with Dubai Duty Free in an advisory role and as a representative at its busy events and promotions calendar that includes the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

“I will be an adviser to the Dubai Duty Free and will advise its management and look forward to seeing the activities we sponsor grow,” he said.

The Dubai Duty Free subsidiary businesses include The Irish Village restaurants, The Century Village, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium and the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel.

The two Irish Village establishments could be expanded to four in the next 10 years and there is room to expand the tennis tournament to a “higher standard”, Mr McLoughlin said.

“When I'm wanted to give an opinion or to help, I'm happy to do it,” he said.

Following his retirement, the Irishman will continue to live in Dubai.

“I have my own residence in Dubai and will continue to spend time there,” Mr McLoughlin said.

While Mr McLoughlin, who is originally from County Galway, describes himself as “Irish through and through”, he is “comfortable and happy” to continue living in Dubai, he said.

Early memories of Dubai

With encyclopaedic knowledge of Dubai's civil aviation industry, Mr McLoughlin's memories of coming to the emirate in the early 1980s offer a glimpse of how the sector took shape in its early days.

He was one of the 10 members of the original consultancy team from Aer Rianta, the Irish Airport Authority, that was contracted by the Dubai government to launch the duty free operation in 1983.

Shannon Duty Free, where the Irishman began his long career in travel retail, is the world’s first duty free and began offering its services to travellers in 1947.

“I was the manager of the Duty Free in Shannon and was one of those 10 people who came here on a six-month contract. I came to Dubai in 1983 for six months and those six months have not finished yet,” Mr McLoughlin said.

He recalls starting Dubai Duty Free operations in December 1983 with a team of 120 people and full-year sales of Dh72 million in the first 12 months of full operations in 1984.

The size of the operation has jumped to Dh7.8 billion in annual sales and 21.5 million transactions in 2023, its biggest sales on record.

“I'm very happy with what we've done … I can't take the credit, we have a fantastic team of people here,” he said, noting that a system of internal promotions has boosted staff loyalty over the years.

Mr McLoughlin also recalls the establishing of Emirates Airline about 40 years ago, in 1985, and of being among its first passengers.

“I remember clearly when Emirates was founded in 1985 and I went on one of inaugural flights from Dubai to Sharjah and back. I remember being on that flight and thinking it was a great experience,” Mr McLoughlin said.

At the time, passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport was about four million and it has since jumped to 89 million in 2023, he said.

Paul Griffiths, chief executive of Dubai Airports, said Mr McLoughlin's 55 years in the industry is an “extraordinary achievement that has shaped travel retail in Dubai and the wider region”, according to a post on his LinkedIn account.

Mr McLoughlin also traced the changing coastline of Dubai.

“I was sat in a motor car the day Chicago Beach was demolished … it is now replaced by Burj Al Arab,” he said. Dubai's historic Chicago Beach Hotel closed in 1997 to make way for Wild Wadi.

Asked if he would write a book to document his memories of the city and its aviation landscape, Mr McLoughlin said that while he has no such plans at the moment, author Graeme Wilson has published A Life Well Spent – a book chronicling the story of Mr McLoughlin’s life and career.

“I'm very happy about the 40 years spent working in Dubai Duty Free and continuing to be a resident of Dubai,” Mr McLoughlin said.

“No doubt Dubai Duty free will continue to grow in the coming years.”
