Open Research Archive

Based on the popular EPrints software, The  Open Research Archive  is the University’s  institutional repository  for all research outputs of researchers working at St Mary’s. The Archive also serves as a repository for other St Mary's academic outputs, including PhD theses and Masters dissertations with Distinction.

Publications and documents that should be added to the  Open Research Archive  include:

  • Journal articles
  • Conference proceedings
  • Book chapters
  • PhD and other higher research theses
  • Masters dissertations with Distinction grades

The  Open Research Archive  is designed to  provide full-text access to research outputs on open access  wherever permitted by publishers. The Archive also collates a record of all scholarly outputs from within the University where full-text access is not permitted.

Open Access Policies

The  Open Research Archive  plays an important role in the externally mandated open access process for research publications. For more detailed information on the University’s  Research Publications and Open Access Policy  and REF2021 open access mandate for REF eligibility, please see  here .

All research outputs are required to be deposited by St Mary's University researchers in the Open Research Archive immediately on acceptance of publication to ensure compliance with REF2021 open access policy and to enhance the visibility and accessibility to the research outputs created within the University.

  • Go to the  Open Research Archive , select 'Deposit now', login in and follow the on-screen prompts. All submissions are checked before being published online.

Ongoing Development

Altmetrics statistics.

We are continually enhancing the functionality of the  Open Research Archive . We have embedded  Altmetrics statistics , where available, to all of the records. This provides some visualisation of the social dynamics of the deposits’ usage across social and other digital media. A good example of what this allows us to capture can be seen on a paper by Oliver Runswick (SHAS), with a concise breakdown of some impact data, which is further expanded within Altmetrics itself:

Image showing the Altmetrics breakdown of impact data

We have also integrated  ORCID  functionality, allowing us to harvest the data on your scholarly outputs from ORCID records in cases where you have provided your ORCID iD to the publisher. This allows us to minimise the volume of data input by utilising a centralised pool of publications data.

IRUS-UK (Institutional Repository Usage Statistics-United Kingdom)   provides COUNTER-conformant usage statistics for all content downloaded from participating UK institutional repositories (IRs).  IRUS-UK systematically scrutinises the open data from institutional repositories and removes data created by machine harvesting. This helps to give an accurate download figure of items from our repository.

We also have the contents of the repository harvested and indexed by the UK's  CORE shared discovery service . This process helps to expose the contents of the Open Research Archive more completely and accurately to interested audiences around the world.

Questions or queries?

If you have any questions about the Open Research Archive, such as open access publishing, article processing charges (APCs), data repositories, Publishers' embargoes, open licences and ORCID iDs, please email  [email protected] .

PhD theses

St Mary's research students completing their doctorates are requested to deposit the full-text of their thesis in the  St Mary's Open Research Archive . This will enable the thesis to be made discoverable and accessible online to researchers around the globe. For more information and instructions on this process please contact  [email protected]

About the St Mary's Open Research Archive

Welcome to St Mary’s University Open Research Archive. The Archive is the online repository for all scholarly outputs created by the university’s staff and postgraduate researchers. In addition to information (metadata) about the outputs, the Archive also provides the full text, whenever possible, as open access for download and sharing.

St Mary’s staff and researchers are able to deposit their publications and other research outputs directly into the Archive and any required publisher embargoes are applied by the open access team and lift automatically at the end of the embargo period.

The repository enables deposited outputs to be discovered, read, downloaded and searched.

In order to be REF compliant, authors are required to deposit the Author’s Accepted Manuscript of all articles accepted for publication and all conference contributions (with an ISSN), within 3 months of acceptance for publication, into the Open Research Archive.

Content deposited into the Archive will remain as a record of St Mary’s research activity for the foreseeable future but the University cannot guarantee the continued readability of all file formats. Researchers are advised to deposit files in ‘open’ file formats to mitigate and ensure long term usability.

The fundamental importance of storing, making accessible and preserving all research outputs from St Mary’s University supports the University’s aim of ensuring that all our research is visible and creates impact, while enabling compliance with University and funder open access policies.

st mary's university research paper

What is SPARC?

The Office of Sponsored Projects, Academic Research, and Compliance (SPARC) is the central administrative office responsible for all externally funded sponsored projects, grants, and contracts that support institutional development, research, scholarship, and creative activities. The office oversees pre- and post-award activities and ensures compliance with all federal, state, sponsor, and institutional policies and regulations.

The Office of Sponsored Projects, Academic Research and Compliance seeks to foster intellectual community and innovation by enhancing research, creative scholarly activities through professional development, capacity building, procurement and ethical stewardship of sponsored projects and compliance oversight.

We envision a supportive and dynamic research environment that contributes to a thriving intellectual community at St. Mary’s University.

University Research Council

The University Research Council promotes, encourages and supports faculty and student research, creative and scholarly activities as a primary mission of the University and an essential component of quality undergraduate and graduate education. In the context of an active learning community with regional leadership and a global perspective, the council nourishes all research, scholarship, professional and creative activities that stimulate ideas and disseminate knowledge. The council is comprised of faculty and staff members across campus with the SPARC.

What We Offer

Internal faculty research grants.

Internal Faculty Research Grants are awarded by the university to support the development of faculty scholarships in their areas of teaching, discovery, integration and application. Grants can be used to fund a process or activity that supports the creation of a scholarly or creative product or prepares the faculty member for such a contribution. Full-time faculty are eligible for these grants and up to 10 are selected annually to receive an award up to $5,000 each.

Research Development Workshops

Research Development workshops inform faculty and staff of University resources to support and strengthen their research and grant development. Topics vary from institutional data, student research experiences, grant stewardship, etc.

Grant Writing Cohort

The purpose of the cohort is to help faculty and staff with the grant writing process. The program is designed for those new to grant development and seeking communal support. Participants complete a two-day grant development workshop and attend monthly meetings breaking down the various components of the grant writing process and application. Interested applicants must submit a letter of interest and seek their dean’s or supervisor’s support to participate.

Manuscript Writing Cohort

The manuscript writing cohort provides support, motivation and accountability as faculty and staff are working on their manuscripts. Monthly meetings are held across campus during the academic year.

One-on-One Faculty Consultations

The SPARC office provides faculty and staff consultations to discuss research interests and/or grant development. Contact SPARC to learn how we can support your research endeavors.

  • Examine preliminary resources through your course readings and recommendations, your faculty member's suggestions, steps suggested below, and by consulting with librarians.
  • Identify concepts and terms that make up the topic statement.

The Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL)  provides these guidelines on writing a thesis statement :

  • Determine what kind of paper you are writing. Is it:
  • analytical ?
  • expository  (explanatory)?
  • argumentative ?

If you are writing a text that does not fall under these three categories (e.g., a narrative), a thesis statement somewhere in the first paragraph could still be helpful to your reader.

2. Your thesis statement should be specific—it should cover only what you will discuss in your paper and should be supported with specific evidence.

3. The thesis statement usually appears at the end of the first paragraph of a paper.

4. Your topic may change as you write, so you may need to revise your thesis statement to reflect exactly what you have discussed in the paper.

Examples and more tips are available from the  Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) .

UNLV University Libraries provide a tutorial on Choosing & Refining Your Topic . Questions to consider include:

  • your general topic,

Guidance from the Temple University Writing Center states that an effective thesis statement should be

  • substantial
  • supportable
