When COVID-19 shut down schools a couple of years ago, teachers everywhere were suddenly thrust into online teaching. It was an extremely difficult time for teachers, and many were glad to return to physical classrooms when they could. Others, though, found that they really loved teaching online. For some folks, remote teaching jobs are actually a much better fit. If you’re on the hunt for one of these positions, here are some places to start.

Virtual Schools

Virtual schools have actually been around since long before the pandemic, although only privately in some locations. Now, many states offer free virtual schooling for K-12, and they need teachers to fill the online classrooms. In most cases, you’ll need to live in the state that provides the online school, for certification and testing purposes. There are also many private virtual school companies out there, which sometimes offer better pay rates than public virtual schools.

Finding Virtual School Remote Teaching Jobs

To find public school remote teaching jobs in your state, do a web search to find out if they offer virtual school and have any openings. You can also check into the companies that run these schools, both public and private. Here are some to try.

• Stride K12 : This company runs virtual schools in multiple states and has lots of openings for full- and part-time online teachers. Teachers report that the pay is as good or better than local districts, and benefits and retirement are provided too.
• Connections Academy: This is another popular choice for public school districts, with many open positions.

ESL Online Teaching

Some of the most popular remote teaching jobs are the ones teaching English as a second language. You can work for companies that have their own curricula to follow, or register to do one-on-one or small class discussion practice. These jobs can be ideal if you’re looking to work part-time, but note that many of them require you to work odd hours to line up with daytime across the world.

Finding ESL Remote Teaching Jobs

There are multiple companies offering these jobs, and it might be worth applying to a few and trying them out to see which fit your needs best. The website Online English Teaching is chock-full of information for those interested in these types of jobs, and it is a terrific place to start.

Note: As of 2022, many of the companies that work exclusively with Chinese students are not currently hiring new teachers. ( This is due to changes China has made in their laws. ) Others have cut their hiring dramatically but are still accepting applications. This is subject to change at any time.

Online Tutor

Tutoring is a lot like teaching, but in a more personalized setting. If you love getting close to your students and focusing on the subjects you know best, this might be for you. There are lots of online tutoring sites available, especially for test prep. You can also strike out on your own, building up clients in a way that fits your schedule.

Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT) is an online marketplace built specifically for educators. This easy-to-use platform is perfect for selling your original classroom creations, such as lesson plans and worksheets. You can even sell physical products and other educational resources you no longer need.

TeachersPayTeachers is a great summer platform to work on. It’s one of those rare summer gigs that also offers the chance to  earn passive income  well into the fall and beyond since digital goods can be created once and sold repeatedly.

It’s free to sign up on  TeachersPayTeachers , and as a seller, you’ll have two membership options:

The Basic Membership is free, but you’ll be charged $0.30 per resource purchased and a 55% royalty on each sale.

The Premium Membership has a $59.95 annual fee but offers a more significant royalty of 80% on gross sales. On orders totaling less than $3, you’ll have to pay $0.15 transaction fees for each resource.

Whether you choose Basic or Premium, teachers receive payments once a month for sales made the previous month via PayPal, direct deposit, Venmo, or wire transfer.

Now, TPT also offers a  Publisher membership , allowing you to offer your products to more than 8 million teacher members with no annual fee. This option is an entirely self-service store that works just like it does for teacher-sellers with unlimited product listings. With a Publisher membership, there’s a 50/50 split on resource sales.

3. Online Test Scorer

While most student tests are graded by computer today, a significant portion still needs the human eye’s attention. Essays, written short answers, and portfolios are reviewed in person—often by a large home-based workforce. That’s where you come in!

As a  work from home test scorer , you evaluate student testing online fairly and consistently using a standardized rubric. While a teaching experience is advantageous (and preferred), training will be provided.

There are several companies that hire test scorers to grade student responses in standardized testing, ranging from elementary to college-level subject matter. Pay generally ranges from $10 to $20 per hour, and many scorers set their own schedules. The availability of work is seasonal, with the highest demand in the spring and summer months as high school students prepare for college.

• Measurement Incorporated  – Measurement Inc. (MI) hires contract readers and reviewers to score student responses in reading, mathematics, science, and social studies among all grade levels – elementary to high school.

4. Teach English as a Second Language

You don’t need to  be an ESL teacher  to teach students a new language when you take on a summer job as a conversational English tutor.

Join the global community of  Cambly tutors  and earn $0.17 ($10.20 per hour) for each minute spent talking with students on Cambly or $0.20 ($12.00 per hour) on Cambly Kids.

You can log in and work whenever you want, day or night. The Cambly dashboard will ‘ring’ when a student is ready to chat; it’s entirely up to you whether or not to answer. Receive payment via PayPal weekly. Other online ESL companies to explore include VIPKid and EF .

5. Virtual Assistant

Virtual assistants  (or VAs) are the unsung heroes of the online world. They provide entrepreneurs, bloggers, and executives with invaluable administrative support from the comfort of their own homes.

Your skill set and experience determine the services you can offer as a VA, but the possibilities are endless. As a teacher, you already have several things you can bring to the table, such as organizational skills, research skills, data entry, editing, proofreading, and much more.

6. Pet Sitter and Dog Walker

If you love animals, you can earn some side income as a  pet sitter  or a dog walker. These services are super helpful to professionals who are gone all day or people who go on vacation and don’t want to take their pets to a kennel.

Some people even combine pet sitter and house sitter services to earn more.

Dog walking is a great summer job opportunity that lets you socialize, get some exercise, and earn a bit of extra money.

Be aware that pay can vary quite a bit based on the services you offer, where you live, and where you do pet sitting (in the client’s home or your own). Check out on-demand sites like  Rover  or Wag to connect with potential clients.

7. Freelance Writer

If you love working with the written word, consider becoming a  freelance writer  in your free time. Whether you specialize in an area of expertise or can write about nearly anything with some research, there are freelance writing opportunities for you.

Search sites such as  Upwork ,  Guru , and  Freelancer  to find openings for writing jobs and be prepared to respond quickly because competition can be fierce. Also, you can set your pay, but be ready to back up your asking price with a killer writing sample.

8. Proofreader

As a teacher, you probably can’t help yourself from catching grammatical and spelling errors as you read. If that’s the case,  proofreading  may be the perfect online part-time job for you.

Entrepreneurs, bloggers, small companies, and large ones, too, all need proofreaders for a large variety of materials (including blog posts). You can set your pay rate and accept clients on a case-by-case basis. Find work on many different sites, including  Proofreadingservices.com  and  Guru .

9. Study.com

If you’re looking for a flexible summer job that you can do anytime, check out the freelance jobs with Study.com . They hire independent contractors to work on writing, editing, proofreading, lesson writing, researching, content creation, sales, and more. New jobs are added all the time, but at the time of writing this article, they had openings for content editors, content creators, test writers, sales development reps, and others. With these part-time online gigs, you’ll get paid twice a month, and you can pick when you work, making them the perfect summer job for teachers!

10. Help Kids Improve Their Reading Skills

Summer is the perfect time for kids to catch up and keep their reading skills sharp, and this is where you come in. Your teaching skills can help make reading easier and more enjoyable for kids. Companies like  BookNook  and the  Institute of Reading Development  hire teachers to work online and help children better their reading skills. With BookNook, you can earn $18 per hour and you can work up to 30 hours per week. With the Institute of Reading Development, teachers can earn $600-$700 per week during the summer. 

11. Train AI Tools

Besides the aforementioned skills, you should also be tech-savvy, detail-oriented, and up-to-date on current affairs. Pay varies based on the task and hiring company, but you can expect to make anywhere from $12-$20 per hour. 

12. Test Websites and Apps

If you’re looking to add a little extra money to your bank account, consider doing website and app testing. With these sporadic side gigs, you’ll evaluate websites and apps for user-friendliness, navigation, and understanding. Your feedback helps companies improve their digital presence with better website designs and applications. Most tests take about 10-15 minutes and pay an average of $10 per test. Sometimes, you’ll be invited to complete more in-depth testing, which these gigs can pay around $65 for an hour of your time. Some of these summer jobs look interesting, but I live in Los Angeles County, where the cost of living is high, and of course, inflation is up everywhere. $15.00/hr. is the minimum wage here (for employers with 26 employees or more). What one can earn with these kinds of companies is significantly less. Not good!

There are a few other options for teachers to earn online if they are bilingual. They can work as translators to get side income with flexible job options. Income varies across languages depending on customer demand and job availability.

Another side gig for teachers in the summer is to rent, deliver and set up baby gear for traveling families. It’s fun and easy work and you get to make a difference in a family’s vacation experience. Product Photography

Many businesses have a number of different products that they need to advertise on their websites. They are often quite happy to send these products to photographers by mail so that they can be photographed. If you have a well-lit studio, you could take product photos well into the night.

Bookkeeping

More and more bookkeeping jobs are becoming stay-at-home jobs as companies simply hire remote accountants to do the work. If you are a remote bookkeeper, you can do the work at any time of the day or night and still get paid a handsome salary.  

Script Writing

Over 500 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. This has influenced a desperate need for more scriptwriters. Scriptwriting is a job you can do any time of the day. As a freelance scriptwriter, you can choose your price per word and advertise your services on different platforms.   

Content Editing

The content that we see on the internet needs editing, proofreading, and every once in a while, updating. Content editing jobs are normally remote and give you the flexibility to work whenever you please. A lot of these jobs are freelance and you can choose how much you will charge. 

Video Editing

With video being one of the major ways that companies advertise their products, the need for video editors has boomed. Many video editors can work from home and at any time they like, provided the videos are sent back in time to meet the deadlines. 

Customer Service

Most businesses nowadays have an online presence where clients can communicate with someone about their products whenever they want to. Although many of these have opening hours for answering inquiries, some companies have customer service reps working remotely through the night to answer client questions as they arise. 

Web Development

Approximately 175 new websites are created every 60 seconds. This means that there is a great demand for web developers. Many web development jobs are remote and you can work on the websites whenever you please. Because these jobs are in such high demand, you can charge competitive prices. 

Fitness Trainer

Many people want to work out from the comfort of their homes and like to do so in the evenings after they have finished work. Working as a virtual fitness trainer is a great way to earn money from home and if you are a night owl, you can choose clients who want to train later in the day. 

Clinical Psychologist

Many people like the freedom of being able to chat with a psychologist from their homes. As a result, remote clinical psychologist jobs are in demand. If you advertise your services to companies in a state outside of your time zone, you could work during the night or whenever you please. 

Large companies often need someone to input data into databases and spreadsheets but don’t want to hire someone to do that job on-site. Remote data entry jobs allow you to work from home and many companies will let you choose when you want to work. 

Many companies need someone to monitor their security cameras throughout the night but they don’t necessarily need you on-site to do so. Often, when you are contracted for a security job with awkward working hours, you will receive even more pay than you would if you were to do it during the day.  CF
