Up, up, and away! Paper airplanes are a fun, easy way to pass the time—but how exactly do you turn a basic piece of paper into a jet-setting masterpiece? You’ve come to the right place. We’ve put together a handy, step-by-step guide to help you fold your way to a sleek, far-flying paper airplane . In a matter of minutes, you’ll be ready for take-off!
Folding a Classic Paper Airplane
- If you want to make a colored paper airplane, use construction paper instead.
- Make sure the crease points toward you when you’re folding your paper airplane or else you’ll fold the wrong corners.
Tip: Try using a ruler or a credit card to press the fold down if pressing it with your fingernail doesn’t work.
- This fold creates the bottom of your plane so it’s easier to hold and throw once it’s finished.
- Make sure your wings are symmetrical to one another so your plane stays level when you throw it.
Making an Advanced Plane
- Try using different kinds of paper to add designs and test how it affects your plane.
- Make sure the crease you folded is pointing toward you when you start folding the paper, or else your folds won’t line up.
- Don’t let the point touch the bottom edge of your paper or it will affect the structure of your plane when you’re finished.
- If you want your airplane to have a blunt edge in front instead of a point, fold the top of your paper so only the corners touch the center crease.
- Your paper should look like a large triangle on top of a narrow rectangle when you're finished.
- Don’t hide your previous folds inside or else it will affect your plane’s structure.
- Make sure the wings on your plane are the same size so your plane doesn’t fly to one side.

About This Article
To make a simple paper airplane, first fold a piece of paper in half lengthwise. Then, unfold it and fold the top 2 corners to the center. Next, fold the angled edges that you just created towards the center, leaving about 1 cm of space between the bottom of the angled edges and the crease. Fold along your original center-line, revealing a small inverted triangle. Now, fold the small inverted triangle up, to lock the angled edges in place. Then, turn your plane over and fold down the top 2 flaps to create wings. Hold it by the bottom edge, and let it fly! For tips on making a slightly more advanced plane, keep reading the article! For best results use a flat, thin-edged ruler. Make good creases along each edge. Adding double stick tape to the inside of the body keeps the wings from separating in flight.
The most basic version. A simple standard that everyone should know how to make.
- Fold the paper in half vertically.
- Unfold the paper and fold each of the top corners into the center line.
- Fold the top edges into the center line.
- Fold the plane in half toward you.
- Fold the wings down, matching the top edges up with the bottom edge of the body.
- Add double stick tape to the inside of the body. The finished plane should look like this.
This one is built for distance, plus it just looks cool.
- Fold the peak toward you and 3/4” from the bottom of the paper.
- Fold both top corners into the center line.
- Fold the remaining tip over the two flaps at the center line to lock them in place.
- Fold the plane in half away from you.
- Fold the wings down 1” from the bottom of the plane.
- Fold up the sides of each wing 1/2” tall.
- Cut two small slits at the back of each wing. Fold up the tabs.
Built correctly, this bee-like beauty stays in the air for a long time.
- Fold the paper in half horizontally.
- Fold the peak down to meet the edge of the previous fold.
- Fold the upper sides into the center line.
- Fold the top edge 1/2” away from you.
- Fold the plane in half towards you.
- Fold the wings down 1/2” from the bottom of the plane.
Count on speed and distance from this sleek plane.
- Unfold the paper and fold the top edge down 2”.
- Fold the top edge down again to meet the bottom of the previous fold.
- Fold the top edge down one more time to meet the bottom of the previous fold.
- Fold the top edges down and away from you to the center line on the back of the paper.
- Starting at the top of the thick nose of the plane, fold the wings down 1/2” in the front and slightly angled to 1 1/2” in the back. Fold up the edges of the wings 1/2”.
The Bullnose
This plane is deceptively fast and stays aloft for quite a distance.
- Fold the top right corner over to the left side, making a fold from the top of the paper to the bottom right corner.
- Unfold the paper and repeat for the left corner.
- Unfold the paper again and fold the top right corner over to meet the crease made from the first fold.
- Fold the left corner over to meet the crease from the second fold.
- Fold the top right edge over to meet the edge of the fold from step 3. Repeat for the other side.
- Fold the top edge down and towards you to meet the point where the right and left layers cross.
- Fold the plane in half away from you. Staring at the nose, fold the wings down at a slight angle, 1/2” in the front to about 2” in the back.

There are many methods to make a paper airplane, some much more intricate than others. This origami paper airplane is quick and easy to make, and it's able to make long, straight flights. The project works best with 6-inch lightweight origami paper squares. Although many origami projects can be folded with scrapbook paper , magazine pages, and other materials, the airplane needs a lightweight paper to fly well. Thicker paper is also more difficult to fold, which makes it more likely that your plane will be asymmetrical and end up taking a quick nosedive upon launch. This project is a great activity to do with kids, making it a lesson about both origami and aviation. And you could even turn it into a friendly competition to see whose paper airplane can fly the farthest.
Watch Now: How to Make a Simple Origami Paper Airplane
What you'll need.
- 1 6-inch square piece of origami paper
Instructions
Make the initial paper airplane folds.
Start by folding your square piece of origami paper in half with the white side facing up. Crease well, and unfold it. Then, turn and fold the paper in half from the other direction. Crease well, and unfold it.
Next, fold the top of the paper to the middle crease. When you're finished, your paper should look like the photo below.
Fold Down the Corners
Fold down the top left corner to meet the edge of the colored side of your paper. Fold down the top right corner in the same manner.
Make the Nose of the Paper Airplane
Fold in the left and right corners of the paper to create a point in the top center (as seen in the photo below). The pointed tip will become the nose of your origami paper airplane. The extra folds you made in the previous step will help to give the nose the additional weight it needs to make the paper airplane fly properly.
Fold Your Paper Along the Middle Crease
Fold your paper in half along the middle crease. Next, fold the right corner up as shown in the photo below. The corner should be about 1/2 inch from the edge of the paper.
Then, unfold the paper, flip it over, and fold it from the other direction along the same crease.
Make Your Airplane's Tail
Open your paper, and collapse the fold you made in the previous step. If you're having trouble getting the fold to collapse, go over the creases once more to make sure they're as sharp as possible. This creates the tail of your paper airplane.
Make the Wings of Your Origami Paper Airplane
Fold down the top layer of the paper to make the first wing of your paper airplane. At the nose, the wing should be slightly above the middle layer of the paper. At the back, it should be slightly above the bottom of the tail you made in the previous step.
Repeat the process on the other side to make the second wing of your origami paper airplane.
Fly Your Simple Paper Airplane
Now it's time to test your paper airplane. Hold your plane at the widest part of the base, and gently send it flying. If you're having trouble getting your plane to fly, examine it carefully to make sure it is symmetrical. If one side is even slightly larger than the other, your plane won't fly straight.
Don't worry if you need to make a few practice airplanes before finding a method that works for you. Paper airplanes, just like other forms of origami , take a bit of patience to learn how to make them.

Have you ever made a paper airplane.
Did you learn how to make it from a book? Or maybe it was from the kid you shared a desk with in the third grade?
We tested a few designs, and one of them really stood out as a winner (I’ll share it below). You’ll have to test some, too, and see which one flies the furthest.
How to Make Paper Airplanes that go Far
Well guess what? Today I’m sharing links to instructions for making paper airplanes that go far and actually work, along with some ideas on how to help kids invent their own paper airplane designs.
So let’s get started with How to Make Paper Airplanes while building Design Skills…
Paper Airplane Supplies
- A few sets of instructions for making paper airplanes. You can get these from a book or download instructions from the internet (see recommended links below)
- Copy paper. Thinner paper is easier for children to fold.
- Markers (optional)
- Scissors (optional)
- A clear table
The Best Paper Airplane Designs
- Our favorite was The Eagle
- We also tried High Glider
- Try a few and have a fly-off to compare them.
Step One: Select a Design
We looked through all of our designs, picked one to start with, and my daughter and I sat down and followed the directions for the first airplane. If you’ve ever made origami, it’s the same approach. Most of the steps were easy enough for her four-year old hands and mind, but I had to help her with a few of the trickier folds.
If you find instructions that are too complicated for you, then skip them and find another plane to make.
Step Two: Teach someone else how to make a plane
Once we got the hang of it, N thought our six-year old neighbor would enjoy this project and we invited him over to join us. Either that or misery loves company.
We each started with another sheet of paper and while we folded, the kids educated each other on hamburger and hot dog folds. If you don’t have a neighbor to teach, teach a parent, babysitter, or grandparent. This step does wonders for building confidence.
Step Three: Iterate and Invent New Planes
Once that first airplane was complete, it was interesting to see where the kids took the project next. My daughter, a designer to the core, got busy decorating her plane with markers. Her friend, a tinkerer at heart who has a soft spot for Legos, began iterating on the design to improve it!
As we folded, he asked me questions like, “On your Eagle, how did you make the wing tips?” And then he proceeded to invent his own series of planes with pointed noses, flat noses, and wing tips.
When my daughter jumped in to help him, I commented that they were iterating . I actually said, “Hey you guys are iterating! Do you know that word? It means that you’re building a lot of planes to test new ideas and in order to figure out how to make it better. Can you say ‘iterate?'” And then of course, they obliged me.
I swear, the teacher thing will probably never leave my soul! Do you ever find yourself in that mode?
Step Four: Take it outdoors
They tested their planes in the house and once they amassed a small fleet of planes, I heard, “Let’s have an airplane show!!” So we took it outdoors to see what the planes could do.
Our friend guessed that the pointy-nosed planes would get more distance and said he was “amazed that the flat-nosed Eagle flew the best.”
All in all, we spent a good hour on this project, and in the end not only did these kids have fun bonding and playing together, but they came away with some new design skills, tools for developing an innovator’s mindset, and good ol’ fine motor skill practice.
A question for you…
Did you ever make paper airplanes as a child? Where did you learn how to make them? And how did they fly?
Online Art Classes for Kids

unfortunately I remember using them in middle of class with a substitute but paper airplanes always remind me of Curious George…remember?
Faigie, Yikes, your story reminds me of spit balls and passed notes. Why are kids so terrible to poor substitute teachers? I was never a big Curious George follower — I’ll have to look for it! R
Classic! I’m so glad my husband likes doing this with our kids, because for some reason it makes me crazy to try to make these… every kid should know how to make these.
Ha! That’s funny, Jeanette. It never really occurred to me that people would detest making paper airplanes. It’s just a few paper folds, for goodness sake 🙂 But they can be frustrating, so I get it. Hooray for plane-making spouses.
Some of the best paper airplanes we ever made were paper straws with two paper strips made into circles, one at each end. I got the idea here:

These babies fly better than anything I have ever folded and my son loves them!
My kids love to make paper airplanes, so I can perform other tasks.
My kids have developed an interesting in making their own paper airplanes. Love all the parts of the brain that get used in the process. Pinned and stumbled!
Thanks, Vicky. Aren’t paper airplanes fantastic? All you need is a sheet of paper (or a small stack) and off you go!
You may find that an existing system serves a particular process, but it may be frozen in time so it has limited usage. With Eclipse, professionals can offer an advanced custom product with greater comfort and without the occlusion effect—providing a clear differentiation from the myriad of standard offerings in the market. When it recognized a pattern, a meaning was assigned.

In this article, we will show exactly how to fold 29 of the best paper airplane designs out there.
What Makes a Paper Airplane Fly?
Understanding the Principles Behind Paper Aircraft Flight
Delving into the science that underpins the flight of paper airplanes can elevate your enjoyment of crafting and piloting these paper marvels. Numerous factors contribute to the performance of a paper airplane:
Aerodynamics: The shape and dimensions of the wings, alongside the overall design, wield substantial influence. This interplay dictates the lift generated by the wings, as well as the combined effects of drag and gravity, ultimately dictating the flight trajectory.
Balance: Attaining an equilibrium in the center of gravity is pivotal for flight stability. Any deviation, be it a nose-heavy or tail-heavy configuration, can hinder a straight and steady flight path.
Airflow Dynamics: The manner in which air flows both over and beneath the wings exerts a profound impact on lift generation. Wings with smoother, streamlined profiles typically yield superior flight performance.
Launch Technique: The force applied and the angle at which you release the paper airplane into the air significantly shape its flight trajectory. Experimenting with various launch techniques can refine and optimize flight performance.
The 2023 Record for Paper Airplane Flight
Turning to the present year of 2023, the distinction for the greatest distance traveled by a paper airplane rests in the capable hands of John Collins, a distinguished aerospace engineer. This extraordinary feat was accomplished back in February 2012 when Collins’s paper creation, affectionately named “Suzanne,” embarked on an astonishing journey, covering an impressive distance of 69.14 meters (equivalent to 226 feet and 10 inches). Collins’s remarkable achievement not only epitomizes the sheer delight found in crafting and guiding paper airplanes through the air but also underscores the immense distances these meticulously designed marvels can traverse when launched with precision.
In Conclusion
Crafting a paper airplane is a straightforward and enjoyable undertaking, devoid of the necessity for video tutorials. Armed with the requisite folding techniques and meticulous attention to detail, you can give life to your aerial masterpiece. An appreciation for the underlying science of paper airplane flight will undoubtedly deepen your enjoyment of this enduring pastime. So, seize a sheet of paper, initiate the art of folding, and release your imagination as your paper creation embarks on its airborne journey. Who knows? You may very well find yourself in the annals of history, having shattered the world record someday!

'Honoured' Johnny Logan set to perform one final time at Eurovision 2024
It's a case of 'What's Another Year?' for Johnny Logan who will once again make his presence felt at Eurovision no doubt, to the delight of fans.
Logan remains the most successful Eurovision artist of all time, making history on multiple occasions as both a performer and songwriter.
He became the second person to win the contest for Ireland when he performed 'What's Another Year?' in 1980 which was penned by Shay Healy.
Johnny then wrote himself into the Eurovision history books when he belted out the self-penned Hold Me Now in 1987, becoming the first person in history to win the contest twice.
He managed another win in 1992 for winning Linda Martin's winning entry Why Me?
Those tuning in to the first semi final on Tuesday will get to see the Eurovision legend in action when he takes to the stage as the first interval act as Bambie Thug battles it out for a place in the final.
Johnny will perform Euphoria which was a winning entry from Loreen who is the only other person to have won the contest twice.
Commenting ahead of the performer, he spoke of being honoured to represent the nation again in 2024.
'I am extremely honoured and excited to have been asked to perform as a guest on 7 May at Eurovision Malmo,' he said in a statement.

'Sweden has won seven times, as has Ireland. To be asked to represent my country one final time is something very special for me and I'm very grateful to all involved with the decision.
'I'm really looking forward to being back on the Eurovision stage as a guest this time and not a contestant.'
He also gave his seal of approval to Ireland's entry, Bambie Thug, who will be singing Doomsday Blue.
'It's probably the best and most original entry that Ireland has had for as long as I can remember. If it doesn't end up doing really well at Eurovision I will be quite surprised,' he told The Sunday World.
'There are so many countries involved in it and the jury has to listen to all of those songs. So the ones they'll remember are the ones that stand out as being different, and Bambi Thug's song is different. I wish Bambie the very best and would say to them "enjoy the experience".'
The news comes as it was revealed that Johnny's fellow winner Paul Harrington, who along with Charlie McGettigan won the contest in 1994 with Rock N' Roll Kids, will announce Ireland's vote .
Ahead of the contest he also had some encouraging words for Irish entry Bambie Thug, saying: 'I just want to wish Bambie Thug all the best, I think you're going to bring this home, that's the truth, I've a very good feeling about this one.'
