It may not be helpful for students to write down ‘English Homework’ as they may forget what they may have been asked to read or study. Instead, they should write down ‘read chapter 1 of (name of the book)’ or ‘write a paragraph or summary on the chapter of (name of the book).’ Being more specific about the assignment will make it easier for them when they get down to completing it.

As students get older, their homework will become more difficult and include more detail. Therefore, teachers should ensure that students have written everything they need; for example, if the task was to ‘read the handout,’ questions like: which handout? What is the handout about? Are there any questions about it? Doing this will ensure that students become self-sufficient and can do it next time without being reminded.

• In the circle, write "This diary belongs to:" and then write your name under it.

• Use creative lettering and handwriting styles to make your diary pages visually interesting. Try block printing, bubble letters, calligraphy, or your own invented script.
• Don't just write text! Draw illustrations, doodles, diagrams, word art, and add decorations to bring your diary to life. Expressing yourself visually is fun.

Dear Care and Feeding,

I have two daughters, “Kacy” (14) and “Allie” (7). Kacy has been keeping a diary since she was 11, and writes in it almost every day. She has always been clear that it is very personal and no one should ever read it. Over the weekend, Kacy was at her friend’s house for a sleepover, and Allie got bored and read her diary. When Kacy got home, she found this out because Allie had scribbled on one of the pages.

Allie has admitted she did in fact read it, but is refusing to apologize. During this mess, Allie managed to find out that Kacy is a lesbian (she was planning to come out to us on New Year’s Eve) and has a crush on her best friend. Kacy is now incredibly angry with Allie, and is refusing to speak to her at all. She has tried to punch Allie on multiple occasions, and I just don’t know what to do.

Dear Diary Dilemma,

Kacy has a right to her anger, if not the right to do whatever she wants with it; her privacy was violated, and she was robbed of the chance to come out to her family when and how she wished. Obviously, it’s not ok for her to hit Allie. But don’t try to force her to move past how she feels—she needs time to be hurt and angry and deal with her broken trust.

I know that Allie is only 7 and may not understand why telling others about her sister being gay and having a crush on her best friend was so out of line. It’s your job to explain to her why what she did was wrong, and tell her that the right thing to do now is to acknowledge that and apologize. It’s important for kids to learn and know that when they hurt someone, whether that person is a sibling or a friend or anyone else, they need to take responsibility and say they’re sorry.

You can also talk with Allie about the importance of respecting her sister’s privacy—after all, she will want her sister to do the same for her, not go blabbing her secrets to others. If Allie still refuses to apologize, you can’t force her, but you can let her know you’re disappointed in that decision and make sure there are consequences for her actions. —Nicole
