addition sums quiz

Here you can practice addition

Addition is a basic part of elementary school mathematics. It usually starts in first grade with adding a number of objects, followed by adding two one-digit numbers. This is followed by adding two two-digit numbers in second grade. In third grade, you move on to adding two numbers with two or more digits. In fourth grade up to sixth grade, you repeat addition problems. PLay also one of the addition games.

The website was developed to help elementary school students learn arithmetic. By offering clear math problems, numeracy can be practiced both in class and at home. Parents and children can practice together, for instance. The exercises have been divided per grade and per arithmetic skill. Through a variety of exercises you can practice elementary school addition skills, which you also learn in first, second, third, fourth, and fifth grade.

Addition is ...

... bringing two or more numbers (or things) together to make a new total.

Example: When we add 2 and 3 we get 5 .

We can write it like this:

Write this down, with the answer, using numerals :

You should get:   4 + 3 = 7

Have a Play

Drag the numerals to the two blue boxes see how addition works:

Swapping Places

Swapping the position of the numbers we are adding still gets the same result!

More Examples:

5 + 1 = 1 + 5 = 6

7 + 11 = 11 + 7 = 18

4 + 100 = 100 + 4 = 104

You get better at addition with practice, so we have:

Addition Table

We can also "look up" answers for simple addition using the Addition Table (but it is really best to learn to remember the answers).

Example: Find 3 + 5

• find the row starting with "3"

• move along to be under the column "5"

• and there is the number "8", so 3 + 5 = 8

Larger Numbers: Use Addition in Columns

Other names for Addition are Sum, Plus, Increase, Total

And the numbers to be added together are called the " Addends ":

Addition Questions

Addition questions with solutions are given here for students to practice and improve their skills. Addition is one of the arithmetic operations in mathematics that are multiplication, division, subtraction and addition. This mathematical operation is introduced in elementary classes to teach kids how to add two or more numbers.

Addition is taught to kids using various methods which are counting using figures (or fingers), adding two numbers using a number line, addition by regrouping and by using addition tables. We can directly add numbers of one digit, but when it comes to adding numbers of more than one digit, we first write the digits of the number according to their place value, then start adding column-wise from right to left.

Learn more about Addition .

Addition Questions with Solutions

Below are the questions based on addition operation for practice along with solutions.

Question 1: Find the sum of 1564 and 36789.

Addition question - 1

Therefore, the sum of 36789 and 1564 is 3853.

Question 2: Evaluate:

(i) 236 + 465

(ii) 1678 + 520

(iii) 305 + 698

(iv) 340 + 829

(i) 236 + 465 = 701

(ii) 1678 + 520 = 2198

(iii) 305 + 698 = 1003

(iv) 340 + 829 = 1169

Question 3: How much should be added to 6745 to get 10,000?

We to find a number such that 6745 + ___ = 10,000.

Now, 10,000 – 6745 = 3255.

Thus, 3255 should be added to 6745 to get the answer 10,000.

Question 4: Aman daily travels 2 km by autorickshaw 3 km by bus and walks the rest 650m to reach his school. How much distance does he daily cover to reach school?

Distance travelled by autorickshaw = 2 km

Distance travelled by bus = 3 km

Distance he walks = 655 m = 0.655 km (since, 1 km = 1000 m)

Total distance travelled = 2 km + 3 km + 0.655 km = 5.655 km or 5 km 655 m.

Question 5: What is the sum of 450 and 15 less than 50?

15 less than 50 = 50 – 15 = 35

Now, 450 + 35 = 485.

Question 6: Add 23.78 and 6.927.

Writing the numbers column-wise according to the place value, add from the right side,

Therefore, the sum of 23.78 and 6.927 is 30.707.

Question 7: If there are 52 students in section A, 55 students in section B and 58 students in section C of a class in a school. Find the total number of students in that class.

Number of students in section A = 52

Number of students in section B = 55

Number of students in section C = 58

Total number of students = 52 + 55 + 58 = 165

Therefore, there are 165 students in that class.

Question 8: A tailor requires 3 metres of cloth to make a shirt and 4.5 metres of cloth to make a pant. Find the total length of cloth required to stitch 2 shirts and one pant.

Length of cloth required to stitch a shirt = 3 m

Length of cloth required to stitch a pant = 4.5 m

Total cloth required to stitch two shirts and one pant = (3 + 3 + 4.5)m = 10.5 m

Question 9: Evaluate 1298 + 6936 + 4590

∴ 1298 + 6936 + 4590 = 12824.

Question 10: Amina goes to market and buys groceries for ₹ 2300, stationeries for ₹ 550 and had a milkshake for ₹ 200. How much did she spend in total?

Cost of groceries = ₹ 2300

Cost of stationeries = ₹ 550

Cost of milkshake = ₹ 200

Total amount = ₹ (2300 + 550 + 200) = ₹ 3050.

Therefore, Amina spent ₹ 3050.

Question 11: Add mentally:

(i) 1500 + 350

(ii) 3456 + 156

(iii) 873 + 120

To calculate mentally,

Step 1: Calculate (500 + 300) + 1000 = 1800

Step 2: 1800 + 50 = 1850

Step 1: (456 + 100) + 3000 = 3556

Step 2: 3556 + 50 = 3606

Step 3: 3606 + 6 = 3612

Step 1: 873 + 100 = 973

Step 2: 973 + 20 = 993

Question 12: Calculate: 12.56 + 54.72 + 81.63

∴ 12.56 + 54.72 + 81.63 = 148.91

Question 13: Fatima ate 2 slices of pizza, Arifa ate 3 slices of pizza and Guddu ate 1 slice of pizza. How many pizza slices were there?

Number of slices Fatima ate = 2

Number of slices Arifa ate = 3

Number of slices Guddu ate = 1

Total number of pizza slices = 2 + 3 + 1 = 6

Question 14: Evaluate 23/4 + 12/5 + 1/3

\(\begin{array}{l}\left [ \frac{23}{4}+\frac{12}{5} \right ]+\frac{1}{3}=\left [ \frac{23\times 5}{4\times 5} +\frac{12\times 4}{5\times 4}\right ]+\frac{1}{3}\end{array} \)

\(\begin{array}{l}=\left [ \frac{115+48}{20} \right ]+\frac{1}{3}=\frac{163}{20}+\frac{1}{3}\end{array} \)

\(\begin{array}{l}=\frac{163\times 3}{20\times3}+ \frac{1\times20}{3\times 20}=\frac{489+20}{60}= \frac{509}{60}\end{array} \)

∴ 23/4 + 12/5 + 1/3 = 509/60

Question 15: Sammy runs 2½ km and Andi runs 3⅓ km of a park. How much distance they ran in total?

Distance covered by Sammy = 2½ km = 5/2 km

Distance covered by Andi = 3⅓ km = 10/3 km

Total distance covered by both of them = 5/2 + 10/3 = (15 + 20)/6 = 35/6 = 5⅚ km
