Why Copying Homework Assignments Is Wrong: The True Reason

There are a lot of times when you are told never to copy assignments. So many students never take this for granted, until that point when they are caught between a rock and a hard place, and they are left wondering why they never spent enough time trying to understand what happened. Copying homework assignments is a bad thing. It is wrong on so many levels, and there are learning institutions which will actually punish you severely when you do this.

Have you ever wondered why schools are so careful about this? Today you will learn so much about this, and perhaps use the tips that you learn to make sure that you never fall short of the same when you are working on your paper, or when you have some work to do. The following are some of the main reasons why you need to make sure that you never copy some of this work at all:

You do not learn anything

  Examples of cheating include:

• Collaborating on an in-class or take-home test without the professor's permission.

  Bribery takes on two forms:

• Bribing someone for an academic advantage, or accepting such a bribe (i.e. a student offers a professor money, goods, or services in exchange for a passing grade, or a professor accepts this bribe).
• Using an academic advantage as a bribe (i.e. a professor offers a student a passing grade in exchange for money, goods, or services, or a student accepts this bribe).

Misrepresentation

Misrepresentation is any act or omission that is intented to deceive an instructor for academic advantage. Misrepresentation includes lying to an instructor in an attempt to increase your grade, or lying to an instructor when confronted with allegations of academic dishonesty.

Conspiracy means working together with one or more persons to commit or attempt to commit academic dishonesty.

Fabrication

Fabrication is the use of invented or misrepresentative information. Fabrication most often occurs in the sciences, when students create or alter experimental data. Listing a source in your works cited that you did not actually use in your research is also fabrication.

Collusion is the act of two or more students working together on an individual assignment.

Duplicate Submission

A duplicate submission means a student submits the same paper for two different classes. If a student submits the same paper for two different classes within the same semester, the student must have the permission of both instructors. If a student submits the same paper for two different classes in different semesters, the student must have the permission of their current instructor.

Academic Misconduct

Academic misconduct is the violation of college policies by tampering with grades or by obtaining and/or distributing any part of a test or assignment. For example:

• Obtaining a copy of a test before the test is admisistered.
• Distributing, either for money or for free, a test before it is administered.
• Encouraging others to obtain a copy of a test before the test is administered.
• Changing grades in a gradebook, on a computer, or on an assignment.
• Continuing to work on a test after time is called.

Improper Computer/Calculator Use

Improper computer/calculator use includes:

• Unauthorized use of computer or calculator programs.
• Selling or giving away information stored on a computer or calculator which will be submitted for a grade.
• Sharing test or assignment answers on a calculator or computer.

Improper Online, TeleWeb, and Blended Course Use

Improper online, teleweb, and blended course use includes:

• Accepting or providing outside help on online assignments or tests.
• Obtaining test materials or questions before the test is administered.

Disruptive Behavior

Disruptive behavior is any behavior that interfers with the teaching/learning process. Disruptive bahavior includes:

• Disrespecting a professor or another student, in class or online.
• Talking, texting, or viewing material unrelated to the course during a lecture.
• Failing to silence your cell phone during class.
• Posting inappropriate material or material unrealted to the course on discussion boards.

Well, go the hell away , you’re welcome! What happens to your dignity and courage each time? And you for sure want to know how to handle those frequent requests.

There’re several categories of people who desire to copy your homework daily. It’s up to you to decide whether to give it them or no, however, firstly differentiate between those who are your friends and really need some help, and other random guys who simply sit next to you at classes and even rarely talk to you. Done? Fine. Now it gets more difficult. If you can more or less say NO to the latters, your true friends can have a grievance against you. Let’s look how to make it in mild and efficient way.

Friend is copying all of your homework?

Hey! You know, a friend in need is a friend indeed. So, there’s nothing wrong if you help your buddies out if they, for example, forgot to complete homework or were ill or even simply didn’t feel like doing it. This same thing can happen to you as well. But if your friend is copying your homework constantly, that’s not a pleasant situation. Like you’ve spent a couple of hours doing that homework, and this person copies it in 5 minutes and gets the same (or even better) grade. And if so, then you have to explain somehow this nice boy or girl that it is of crucial importance that they do their HW by themselves. Not only will they succeed, but also they will… succeed. OK, it’s a chance for them to improve skills, to learn something new, to be in power of giving their own homework to others, and, eventually,.. wait, they’re no longer listening anymore, so do the following:

• Be the first! Ask “Can I copy your HW today? I’ve just couldn’t… (make up a reason why you haven’t done it yet).” In case your friend doesn’t give you answers, pretend being offended as if he or she doesn’t want to help you in hard times.
• Tell them it is the last time, because next time you simply will help them with their own homework instead of giving yours to copy and that’s it. No other options.
• If the copying happens during the class, sit closer to the teacher as if you have vision problems. Only extreme lovers will sit near you.
• Finally, you can always ask the teacher to email your homework in.

Remember that letting your friend copy all of your homework is not a thing friends should do. Instead you’d better help them to improve the subject and get better grades by themselves.

Say No to random cheaters

This should be the easiest task as you don’t have to worry about disappointing a person who is not your close friend. Thus, you can venture to be rough and tough:

• If they ask for the answers, give the wrong answers (be ready to prepare them beforehand).
• Start taking money. Put prices to each done exercise. No money – no honey, you know. This variant is especially good for those who use our service and pays for homework, and then suddenly appears a guy that wants to copy all stuff.

How Do You Say No When People Want to Copy Your Homework?

Dear Paris,

Some kids always want to copy my answers to homework assignments. They say I’m the smart kid and expect that I’ll just give them the answers. One even asked me to text her a picture of the completed homework so she could copy it. How do I tell them no without making them not like me? We aren’t really friends but we get along in class. I’m not sure what they think of me, but I don’t want them to think of me badly.  I’m not sure exactly how to put it, but I don’t want them to think of me as that girl who thinks she’s too good for us or the goody goody who isn’t one of the regular kids. Thanks for sharing this experience, as I am sure other TIPsters may be going through this as well.

First of all, I understand how frustrating it can be when you work hard to study and learn the right answers– only to have someone come along who wants to take the easy way out. But the truth about the situation is that every time they do that, and copy from someone else, they are only hurting themselves and losing out on an opportunity to grow and be better. I am glad you are not like that.

On the other hand, I understand that everyone wants to be liked. The thing is: there’s a difference between being liked and being taken advantage of. Very soon, you will start to realize that there’s not enough time in the world to be friends with everyone and that not everyone is going to like you, no matter what you do. You are at the age where you start to recognize the signs of someone being a good friend to you and the signs that they are only trying to use you. This situation you are in is a good first step toward reaching that point. Would a good friend ask to copy your work, when they know you would get in big trouble if it ever came out you had allowed them to do so? No, a good friend would not. But perhaps more than that, you need to be a friend to yourself by behaving in a way you know is honorable and right. You want your parents and friends to be proud of you, but you also want to be proud of yourself. And what could be more honorable than adhering to an honor code? With that in mind, know this– every honor code, in every high school and college these days, says the exact same thing: giving people the answer to tests or sharing your homework is considered to be just as much cheating as getting the answers (or homework) from someone else. And even if your school does not have a code that spells that out, there is nothing wrong with you wanting to start following your own personal code of honor now. Let your classmates ask someone else or, better yet, do their own work so they can learn or grow. But you are better than that. You have honor.

The best thing to do with your classmates may be to think of a phrase in advance to use next time they ask to copy your work. If you have this in mind already, and even practice saying it, then you won’t be put on the spot when they ask and not know what to say. The answer has to sound like you, but maybe these might help (change into your own words): “I’m sorry, I can’t help you. But good luck.” -or- “I’d rather not be involved in something that the school might consider cheating. Sorry.” -or- “You’ll have to ask someone else. I can’t help you. Sorry.” Your parents might also be able to help you come up with a good phrase to have in mind. They will be proud of you for standing up for what’s right.

If your classmates push you on it when you decline to help: simply repeat the same phrase again and again until they get the message. Or you could even offer to tutor them or help them study, if you have the time and it doesn’t take away from your studies or what you need to be doing. Finally, explaining about academic honor codes to your classmates, if necessary, might help, but remember: you don’t owe them an explanation. You have a perfect right to behave honorably. It takes strength, but you can do it.

The most important thing for you to remember about this situation is to make sure you are not violating either your school’s or your own honor code. If your school has an honor code, privately asking the teacher to talk about it in class one day might help. I would also encourage you to ask them about how to become a volunteer tutor or teaching assistant, rather than sharing materials to your classmates without the teacher’s awareness. That way you can be a friend to your classmates in a genuinely helpful way– and being a true friend is the best way to inspire someone to like you back.

For those out there who are not aware of the phrase, “can I copy your homework?” it is a collection of meme jokes that compares pieces of pop culture.

In most cases, they compare two pieces of pop culture where one of the pieces is portrayed to have imitated the other piece.

Away from the memes on copying homework, it is a thriving practice by students who seek a quick way to earn a grade while not doing the assignments. That is the origin of the memes but presents practical cheating in college.

Now that we are clear about its origins and its pop-cultural usage, what response would you give to a classmate after posing the question, “can I copy your homework?

Well, the answer will be either yes or no depending on your ethics and perceptions of cheating.

If your response is yes, then there are things to consider to avoid detection.

As the meme goes, a request to copy homework is accepted under the condition that a few things should be changed so that the two assignments will not appear similar or plagiarized.

The best method to reduce or avoid similarity is to paraphrase. These are the results of students having assignment burdens that give them little to no choice.

How to successfully Copy someone’s Homework

1. by paraphrasing it.

What is paraphrasing? Paraphrasing can be defined as presenting information and ideas you have taken from another source in your own words.

Ideally, you should acknowledge where those ideas and pieces of information originated from. However, in this case, a student cannot acknowledge the source of information because it would be traced back to their classmate.

Paraphrasing is just like recycling information because even though the words and sentence structure have been changed, the meaning and ideas remain the same.

There are various techniques for paraphrasing. However, you should apply those techniques once you have completely understood what your classmate has written.

It would be unthoughtful to paraphrase an assignment that you do not understand. You will end up messing things up and being caught because of plagiarized work.

1. Use synonyms

The first technique in paraphrasing is to use synonyms. Synonyms are words that carry the same meaning. As we have noted, paraphrased work should portray the same meaning and ideas as the original work.

Therefore, the utilization of synonyms is a good way to paraphrase your friend’s work or any other paper.

For example, if the original text is, “he was deeply saddened by the loss”, you could paraphrase it to, “he was devastated by the loss”.

“Deeply saddened” in the original text has been replaced by “devastated”, which is a synonym.

The two sentences are not similar but they carry the same meaning.

However, be very careful when using synonyms while paraphrasing. This is because words may carry several meanings depending on the context and the intended message to be portrayed.

Because of this, you have to consider the most applicable synonym that expresses the intended meaning for the specific context.

For example, the word “manage” can mean an activity linked to a leadership role while it can also mean the ability to do a particular task. Be careful while selecting synonyms.

2. Change the sentence form

The second technique of paraphrasing is changing the form of sentences or words. For example, you can replace a verb with a noun from a similar word family.

Again, you can replace an adjective with a verb. This also brings in another strategy of changing the grammatical structure of a sentence.

For example, if the grammatical structure for comparing something to another is by the use of “slower than”, you can paraphrase the phrase by replacing it with “not as quick as” or “not as rapid as”.

While paraphrasing, you can decide to combine all the above techniques to come up with something unique. It all depends on what you want and the technique you are most comfortable with.

If people invested as much time reading and studying as they do trying to game the system, they would have a better chance at succeeding in life. People who use this method to achieve high grades in middle- and high school, especially those attending online schools, often do poorly on the SAT and ACT tests and have difficulty succeeding in college. Unfortunately, few people realize they're cheating themselves until it's too late.

• You don't learn the information yourself. Practice makes perfect so copying another person's homework won't help you in the long run.
• You are relying on someone else's answers for your grade - bad idea!
• If you are caught by the teacher, you may be punished for plagiarism.
• In the end, you will not feel good about yourself since you knew that whatever grade you received was not rightfully earned.

Should We Get Rid of Homework?

Some educators are pushing to get rid of homework. Would that be a good thing?

Do you like doing homework? Do you think it has benefited you educationally?

Has homework ever helped you practice a difficult skill — in math, for example — until you mastered it? Has it helped you learn new concepts in history or science? Has it helped to teach you life skills, such as independence and responsibility? Or, have you had a more negative experience with homework? Does it stress you out, numb your brain from busywork or actually make you fall behind in your classes?

Should we get rid of homework?

In “ The Movement to End Homework Is Wrong, ” published in July, the Times Opinion writer Jay Caspian Kang argues that homework may be imperfect, but it still serves an important purpose in school. The essay begins:

Do students really need to do their homework? As a parent and a former teacher, I have been pondering this question for quite a long time. The teacher side of me can acknowledge that there were assignments I gave out to my students that probably had little to no academic value. But I also imagine that some of my students never would have done their basic reading if they hadn’t been trained to complete expected assignments, which would have made the task of teaching an English class nearly impossible. As a parent, I would rather my daughter not get stuck doing the sort of pointless homework I would occasionally assign, but I also think there’s a lot of value in saying, “Hey, a lot of work you’re going to end up doing in your life is pointless, so why not just get used to it?” I certainly am not the only person wondering about the value of homework. Recently, the sociologist Jessica McCrory Calarco and the mathematics education scholars Ilana Horn and Grace Chen published a paper, “ You Need to Be More Responsible: The Myth of Meritocracy and Teachers’ Accounts of Homework Inequalities .” They argued that while there’s some evidence that homework might help students learn, it also exacerbates inequalities and reinforces what they call the “meritocratic” narrative that says kids who do well in school do so because of “individual competence, effort and responsibility.” The authors believe this meritocratic narrative is a myth and that homework — math homework in particular — further entrenches the myth in the minds of teachers and their students. Calarco, Horn and Chen write, “Research has highlighted inequalities in students’ homework production and linked those inequalities to differences in students’ home lives and in the support students’ families can provide.”

Mr. Kang argues:

But there’s a defense of homework that doesn’t really have much to do with class mobility, equality or any sense of reinforcing the notion of meritocracy. It’s one that became quite clear to me when I was a teacher: Kids need to learn how to practice things. Homework, in many cases, is the only ritualized thing they have to do every day. Even if we could perfectly equalize opportunity in school and empower all students not to be encumbered by the weight of their socioeconomic status or ethnicity, I’m not sure what good it would do if the kids didn’t know how to do something relentlessly, over and over again, until they perfected it. Most teachers know that type of progress is very difficult to achieve inside the classroom, regardless of a student’s background, which is why, I imagine, Calarco, Horn and Chen found that most teachers weren’t thinking in a structural inequalities frame. Holistic ideas of education, in which learning is emphasized and students can explore concepts and ideas, are largely for the types of kids who don’t need to worry about class mobility. A defense of rote practice through homework might seem revanchist at this moment, but if we truly believe that schools should teach children lessons that fall outside the meritocracy, I can’t think of one that matters more than the simple satisfaction of mastering something that you were once bad at. That takes homework and the acknowledgment that sometimes a student can get a question wrong and, with proper instruction, eventually get it right.

There are reasons why an instructor gives the assignment to be done individually. They include enhancing responsibility in the learner, improving thinking and memory, way of revising what the teacher has taught in the classroom, enhances time management skills, etc.

• Poor time management skills. If a student is poor at managing time, they will focus on other activities such as playing and forget to handle homework. They end up copying the work from another student.
• To get a higher grade. It is common in students who are often under-achieving.
• Laziness. A lazy student finds it more appealing to copy homework instead of doing it themselves.
• Lack of confidence.

However, there is no justification for copying homework, and if by any chance your instructor catches you, expect severe consequences.

Is getting help on an assignment cheating?

No, getting help with your assignment is not cheating .

Assignments help the student to get in-depth knowledge about the subject. Therefore, it is not a surprise if you find unfamiliar terms and questions in your homework.

If the assignment proves to be difficult, it is not against the rules to get help. It is not logical to fail your work, whereas it is legal to ask for help.

How do you get help with your assignment?

First, hire an expert to help you out. An expert has vast knowledge and experience in that particular subject.

They will, therefore, do their research well and explain all the points in a manner the student understands them and also learns in the process.

Secondly, form a group with your colleagues and solve the questions together. All the students must contribute to the discussion so that everyone learns.

Many instructors encourage discussions because they help the students to express their ideas. They are beneficial to learners who are shy in the classroom.

Is letting someone copy your homework cheating?

Letting someone copy your homework is cheating.

Letting someone copy your work means that the student did not have the initiative nor the time to do the assignment themselves.

If your colleague tells you that the homework was difficult for them to handle, let them show evidence of where they tried to complete the work.

If they fail to show it, and you let them copy your work, then you are guilty of cheating too, because you have aided in the process of cheating.

Allowing someone to copy your homework promotes laziness among students. A student is likely to take advantage of you each time the instructor gives work.

They will fail to do the assignment because they already know they have someone who lets them copy theirs.

If a student copies homework from a classmate, the instructor is likely to know.

The work looks the same. For example, where two learners have the same wrong answers. Allowing someone to copy your homework is unethical.

You will be both found guilty of cheating, regardless of who copied from who, and the consequences may be severe.

If the assignment is individual, do not let someone else copy your work. It is that simple.

What happens if someone copies your assignment?

All learning institutions have rules and regulations governing the conduct of students. They restrict students from cheating in assignments.

If someone copies your homework, it is a direct way of cheating, and there are dire consequences. The probability of getting caught is very high because it is easy to know copied work.

Consequences of copying assignment

Failed class.

Assignments are submitted to gauge the learner’s understanding of the subject, and the penalties may not be severe.

The instructor can choose to fail you in that class, and you would have to repeat the coursework the following semester/term.

However, this is inconvenient because you will waste precious time doing the same subject all over again. Additionally, your peers will be ahead of you, and they may even graduate before you.

In some institutions, copying assignment is strictly prohibited. If you cheat and get caught, you get suspended for a particular duration.

It could range from one term to several years. The suspension is highly inconvenient for you because you will be away from school while your fellow students are learning.

You will lose significant time, and you will lag in terms of syllabus coverage. Catching up with the rest will be tedious.

The likelihood of never catching up is high, and you will complete your course after the others. The workload also increases as you have to juggle in between classes.

The instructor may also choose to omit the marks for that assignment. You will have to be lucky, that the instructor is not strict enough.

However, when the instructor excludes scores, it has a long term effect on your overall grade. The subject grade will be low because of the missing score.

You will pass the class, but your overall performance will be affected. For example, if your target for that semester is to achieve an average score of 70, it becomes difficult as that subject pulls down the other grades.

Maintaining balance becomes a problem.

More work for you

Getting more work to do from your instructor if you are guilty of cheating is common in various institutions.

The instructor disregards the first assignment and gives you something different to do. The homework is often a workload that requires your commitment.

You, therefore, dedicate much of your time completing the assignment. Time is a precious commodity, and this could prove to be an uphill task to accomplish, especially in cases where you have other subjects to handle.

However, it is a small price to pay, considering you committed an offence.

Remark on your transcript

Your instructor may attach a review on your transcript, indicating that you copied or assisted someone else in copying your assignment.

It has an impact on your future endeavors as no one will want to associate themselves with you. It could have an impact on your chances of landing a scholarship or a job.

Copying assignments is not as severe as cheating in examinations. Therefore, it is not likely that you get expelled. However, some institutions are strict, and if by any chance the assignment was part of the coursework, you could get an expulsion.

It is smart to avoid cheating in school. It could be copying work, or aiding in cheating by sharing your work. The consequences are severe, and you should try your level best to avoid them.

If the assignment proves to be difficult, there are efficient ways to deal with it, like asking for guidance from your instructor. If someone copies your work without your consent or knowledge, report it as soon as possible.

Is giving someone answers cheating?

Yes, giving someone answers is a form of cheating. You may have completed the assignment by yourself, but giving answers is enabling cheating .

Look at it this way, by failing to give someone answers, they are likely to do the homework and find the answers themselves.

On the other hand, if you give them answers, they will not bother doing the work. They score undeserving grades. It is outright cheating.

In some cases, having only the answers does not guarantee the student a good score because the instructor will be looking for the descriptions and analysis.

Therefore, if the student only submits the answers, the instructor will know that they are cheating.

Is sharing homework cheating?

Yes, sharing your homework to help someone who has not completed theirs is cheating.

It is a common practice among students where they form secret groups to do the assignment. Forming group discussions is not wrong, but if everyone is not contributing, then it is unethical.

For example, students may form a group where if one student completes the assignment, they share it to the group for the rest to copy. Both the student who shared the homework and the ones copying are guilty of cheating.

However, after the students have submitted the assignment and it is graded, they can share the work among themselves. It broadens their understanding of the subject.
