When it’s time to hire, you have two main options: onboard a permanent employee who will be part of your team for the long haul, or opt for a temporary worker who can help meet your needs on a short-term basis. Which should you choose? This article will help you decide on hiring temporary vs. permanent employees.

Differences Between Temporary vs. Permanent Employees

Temporary employees.

Temporary employees, sometimes called temps, include freelance and contract employees and workers hired through an employment agency. 

They’re employed for a limited, predetermined amount of time, like during a company’s busy holiday season. Or, they may be brought on indefinitely with the understanding that the arrangement is not permanent, like when a full-time staffer is out on medical leave but plans to return. 

A temporary employee is paid an agreed-upon rate for their work, typically via an hourly wage or a contracted fee. They’re not usually eligible for benefits like employer-sponsored healthcare, retirement, and paid time off. Some temporary employees, like freelancers, are fully responsible for their own taxes. 

Permanent employees

Permanent employees include both full- and part-time employees who work for a company in an ongoing capacity. In other words, there’s no predetermined end date for their employment. 

Full-time permanent employees are eligible for any benefits the company provides, and some companies include part-timers in this offering as well. Employers are responsible for a portion of their permanent employees’ taxes and things like unemployment insurance and worker’s comp in some states. 

Pros of Hiring Temporary Employees

Purely from a dollars-and-cents perspective, it’s generally more affordable to hire a temporary employee than a permanent one. This is because the only wage-related cost of temporary employees is their compensation, whereas permanent employees also bring costs in the form of taxes and benefits.

Temporary employees allow you to access specialized knowledge without the expense of hiring a full-time employee. 

For example, let’s say your agency lands a major marketing campaign, and part of that campaign involves building a niche mobile app. If you don’t already have developers in-house, bringing onboard a full development team would be very expensive. 

Instead, most agencies would opt to leverage temporary workers to provide those technical skills for only the duration of the campaign, greatly saving on labor costs while still meeting the business’ needs.

Opportunity for a “trial run”

Once you’ve landed a permanent employee, you won’t have to fill that position again for a long time. This is in contrast to temporary positions, which may need to be filled multiple times consecutively.

Permanent employees are a long-term investment in your business and can help you build the foundation of a strong brand. Hiring temporary workers, on the other hand, provides more flexibility and involves lower costs.

Know Your Hiring Options

Whether you're starting a small business or growing your team, it's essential to understand the different types of employment out there. Should you hire permanent or temporary workers? What about contract workers and freelancers? The best option depends on your business goals and recruitment budget. As a small business owner, you may have both temporary and permanent employees – and outsource some functions, such as IT, accounting or human resources.

The Fair Labor Standards Act doesn't define full-time or part-time employment, states the U.S. Department of Labor . As an employer, it's your responsibility to determine what counts as full-time work and what's considered part-time work.

Note, though, that any work over 40 hours per week is considered overtime and must be paid as such. Some employees, including pilots and flight attendants, taxi drivers, livestock auction workers and others, are exempt from overtime pay requirements, according to the Fair Labor Standards Act Advisor .

The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines full-time employees as individuals who work at least 35 hours per week. Therefore, those working less than that can be considered part-time employees. For example, many companies hire part-time accountants, software developers, copywriters or network administrators.

As the IRS notes, any organization with more than 50 staff members must offer health insurance to those working an average of 30 hours per week. Permanent employment, whether part-time or full-time, requires medical coverage, pension plans, office space, workers' compensation, training and more. That's not the case with temporary and contract employees.

The main difference between a permanent and a temporary employee is that the temp workers, or casual staff, are hired for a predetermined period. This category may include freelancers, interim staff, seasonal workers or contract workers. In some instances, they may receive health insurance and other benefits, but that's not a hard rule.

Like permanent employees, temp workers are protected by law against discrimination and sexual harassment. Furthermore, employers and staffing agencies must take the steps needed to provide them with a safe work environment, states the Occupational Safety and Health Administration .

Hiring Temporary vs. Permanent Employees

Hiring permanent employees involves higher costs than temp work. Terminating them requires extensive paperwork and may not be easy from a legal standpoint. But this option has its perks. A permanent employee is more likely to be loyal to the company he works for and stay there when times get tough. He may also better understand your company's culture, mission and values than a seasonal or contractor worker.

Another difference between a permanent and a temporary job lies in the level of commitment. Permanent employees have the chance to grow professionally and develop their skills as your business grows. They may also put more time and effort into their work to get promoted and advance their careers. A temporary employee, on the other hand, may quit their job when you least expect it. Plus, they may work for several employers at a time, so they might not be able to fully commit to your projects.

A December 2017 study published in the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology states that while temporary workers may benefit a company's bottom line, they may also hurt team performance and morale. To prevent these issues, managers should foster a culture of commitment and train their teams to embrace diversity.

All in all, temporary employment can be a good choice for short-term projects. This option allows you to recruit from a wider talent pool while reducing the time to hire. Plus, it's more cost-effective. Permanent employment, by comparison, makes it easier to build a strong company culture and secure a loyal workforce. A mix of temporary, permanent and contract employees may help your organization expand its reach and remain competitive.

When it comes to deciding which type of work is right for you, choosing between temporary and permanent employment can be difficult, to say the least . It’s like choosing between meal prepping and committing to one meal for the week or popping into the shops every day on the way back from work and deciding on what to have when you get there.

Both have their benefits , and the type of role you ultimately choose will depend on several factors , including earning potential, stability, and flexibility, to name just three. Fortunately for you, that’s where we’re here to help! In this post, we’ll explore how to determine which option is right for you.   

What is Temporary Work ?

As the name suggests, temporary work is carried out over a fixed period rather than indefinitely. It is – by its very nature – work that will end. Data from 2021 showed approximately 1.71 million temporary employees in the United Kingdom.   

There are a couple of types of temporary work from which to choose. Firstly, you can commence on a fixed-term contract ; an example of this would be a nurse carrying out a 12-week contract, a six-month contract or a 12-month contract.   

The second option is what’s known as working on an ad hoc basis. These jobs are typically charged on an hourly or daily basis and over a much shorter period.

Temporary positions are also sometimes known as locum roles; locum comes from the Latin phrase locum tenens, which means “place holding”. That one’s for all you history nerds, out there!

Why Should You Consider a Temporary Position ?

Temporary work brings with it many benefits, including:    

Greater Flexibility

One of the most significant advantages of temporary work is undoubtedly the flexibility it brings. You can pick contracts that work around your life rather than vice versa.

The Ability for People to Travel

When your work is limited to a few weeks or months, there’s less need to settle if you don’t want to.

This makes temporary work ideal for people wanting a more nomadic lifestyle or who like to experience a wider variety of working environments. If travelling the country or the globe is your goal, then temporary work provides the goalposts.

The Option of  Temp Work Turning into Perm Work

If a temp position goes well, it can often lead to more extended temp contracts or even a permanent position in some instances. Now, of course, this isn’t something that everyone wants.

After all, some people want temporary work to stay, well – temporary. However, if the temp worker is a good fit with the employer, then there’s no reason why that relationship can’t potentially extend further down the line.

Are there any Drawbacks to Temporary Work ?

Temp work isn’t for everybody, with one person’s amazing flexibility being another person’s daunting instability. With temporary work, there’s much less salary stability, and when one temporary contract ends, the quest is on for the next one right away.   

There’s also potentially less scope for career progression with a temporary contract. Unlike permanent positions, which give you a solid footing from which to work your way up the job ladder gradually, temporary positions don’t offer the same foundation.   

That’s not to say that there’s no room for progression, however. As touched upon, short contracts can lead to longer contracts, which can, in turn, lead to even longer contracts. However, there’s less scope for progression (if such an opportunity exists) when an employer knows you will only be with them for a finite period. 

What is Permanent Work ?

Unlike temporary work, which has an endpoint from the outset, permanent work is ongoing, with no end date in the employment contract. Such positions typically offer an annual salary that’s paid monthly.   

Permanent work is much more common in the UK than temporary work. As per data from Gov.uk , almost 95% of all working-age people (in 2021) were employed in permanent job roles.

What are the Benefits of a Permanent Role ?

Just as temporary work has its benefits, so too does permanent work. The significant advantages of permanent work include:

Greater Job Security

If you ask anybody working in a permanent position why they chose that over a temporary role, the answer will be almost unanimous. Working somewhere indefinitely offers greater job security than working something for a fixed period.

If you work permanently for an employer, you can bank on the fact that, in a year and a half’s time, for example, you’ll still have a paycheck coming in at the end of that month. If you’re only working a three-month fixed contract, by contrast, then you’re having to work out where your income is going to come from almost as soon as you start the first job.

Scope for Career Progression

By working permanently somewhere, you’re laying down roots. The mightiest trees grow from the smallest of saplings, and they do so by planting their roots and letting them grow.

You can think of your progression through a company like the journey of a sapling into a mighty Oak. If you relocate the tree every few months, it’s less likely to reach the same heights .

Training Opportunities

If you work permanently for an employer, they’re more likely to invest in you as an employee, as you aren’t as likely to ship off somewhere else in the near future as a temporary worker will. This investment can take many forms, with training and development opportunities being one such area .

If we think of the permanent role as giving you that one, guaranteed sunny spot in the garden, then training opportunities can be thought of as the fertiliser or the watering can that’s needed to continually keep th at growth going .

Are there any Disadvantages to Permanent Work?

If you’ve started in a permanent role, it’s less likely that you’ll be able to swap that for a temporary role in the same way that a temporary role can eventually lead to a permanent position with an employer.   

Reduced flexibility is another drawback of a permanent role. If temporary work is like renting a property, then permanent work is akin to buying your home. It’s less easy to move around when you buy compared with when you rent, and the same can be said for permanent work when compared with temporary.   

Temporary vs Permanent Work – Which is Right for Me?

Ultimately, when it comes to choosing temporary vs permanent work, this is only a decision that you can make. But by using the above as guidance, you should now have a better understanding of the options on offer and which style of work is more aligned with your goals and desires.  

If you love flexibility and the option to work in various places, then a temporary contract is probably best. By contrast, if you want greater job security and a potentially greater scope for career progression, then a permanent role could be what you lean towards.

What is the Difference Between Permanent, Temporary and Contract Work?

Generally speaking, there are three categories of workers that your company can work with - permanent, temporary and contract workers. While many companies separate workers into two groups, permanent employees and non-permanent workers, there are significant differences between all of these groups of workers.

In fact, referring to temporary workers as contractors or the other way round could lead to issues for your business. That’s why it’s incredibly important that you get the description of your workers correct, and that you have complete clarity into the type of position they are filling in your organization.

So, what exactly is the difference between permanent, temporary and contract workers, and how can you ensure your company is managing its mixed workforce correctly? We explain all in this blog.

A permanent employee is someone that works with your company on a permanent employee contract. Permanent work also includes fixed-term contracts, where the employee is paid through the employer’s payroll.

Permanent workers are eligible for employee benefits, such as paid vacations, sick days, bonuses and a wide range of other perks that are given to permanent employees as part of an employer’s workforce retention strategy.

Temporary workers are generally provided to your company through either a staffing agency or a human capital firm. These workers are employees to the staffing agency, but classified as a temporary worker for your organization.

A temporary worker will receive an hourly wage from the staffing company, as well as potential benefits such as vacation, health insurance at retirement plans - but your business will not be responsible for any of these.

Since there is a contract of services for an agreed hourly rate, temporary workers must be paid overtime when applicable.

While temporary workers and contract workers are both part of the contingent workforce, which makes up the wider gig economy, there are significant differences between these classifications of workers.

Unlike temporary workers who are paid an hourly rate, true contract workers (independent contractors)are self-employed and should be paid a flat amount by a company for the completion of a specific project or pre-determined deliverable.

These workers should be able to choose their own hours and can work from where they want, whether that be at their employer’s office, home, or a location of their choosing. They are responsible for calculating and paying their own taxes.

Unlike temporary workers, independent contractors usually do not fill out timesheets and are paid for the work they do, not the time they work. That means they are responsible for delivering a product or service by a specific deadline and shouldn’t be paid any extra no matter how many hours they spend working on it.

  • Working hours : Working days and hours of permanent roles are likely to be less flexible than temporary work. However, due to the pandemic, this may have changed depending on the company.
