United Airlines Best Worst Seats

If you really want to know where to sit, you want to know if the air conditioning’s too cold, the seat doesn’t recline or if you’ll never get a good night’s sleep because of the light in the galley. So check out our user guide to the best and worst seats on United Airlines.

Flying United Airlines on a domestic or short international flight? You may find yourself on one of the airline’s narrow-body planes. Which is the best of those seats? It depends on what kind of flier you are. So, I decided to dive into FlyerTalk forums and SeatGuru reviews for a guide to where to sit on your next flight.

Not flying one of these plane models? Stay tuned for the next installment in this series: The Best (& Worst) Seats on United Airlines, Pt.2: Wide-Body Planes. Or, head to this FlyerTalk thread that lists the best and worst places to sit on every United Plane, no matter where you’re going.

How do you know which plane model you’re flying? Head here for a quick guide.

The Boeings 737s

Each of the 737 series aircraft has multiple seat layouts, three for -700s, four for -800s, three for -900s, and only one for the -900 MAX. Based on flyer opinions, these aircraft have a good selection of seats, especially behind the bulkhead, if you’re looking for extra legroom. However, there were a lot of complaints about regular economy’s seat pitch.

United Airlines Boeing 737-700 (version 1) Seat Map

The Best Seats:  Row 7

  • Any seat in row 7. It’s behind the bulkhead so there’s plenty of legroom and they don’t always charge more

The Best Seats: The Exit Rows

  • Row 20 on version 1 of this aircraft is great when you’re flying with a companion because it’s a two-seater. However, these seats are in an exit row so you may be charged more to choose these seats. Also, keep in mind that there is limited recline in exit row seats.
  • Row 21 is also an exit row. It has less legroom than row 20, but the seats recline. Many FlyerTalkers did prefer row 21 over row 20 due to the recline.

The Best Seats: United First®

  • Seats 1A and 1B are the best because there’s no one reclining into you. There is also a cutout in the bulkhead wall, offering plenty of legroom for passengers.

The Worst Seats: Economy

  • Row 10 in Economy Plus , and row 11 in some versions of this aircraft does not have a window.

The Worst Seats:  United First®

  • Seats 1E and 1F don’t have extra legroom.
Note: There are two versions of the 737-700. View them here . Have more questions about this plane’s seats? Ask them in the FlyerTalk forum thread,  Everything You Wanted to Know About Where to Sit on a United 737-700

Best Seats: The Gamble

  • Row 7 in Economy Plus can be good or bad depending on the aircraft layout. On the most common version of this plane, row 7 is one of the best seats in Economy Plus because of the extra legroom under the bulkhead. However, on other versions of this plane, the bulkhead extends to the floor, so the legroom is restricted.

Best Seats: Extra Legroom

  • Rows 20 and 21 in Economy Plus both have extra legroom. However, the seats in row 20 don’t recline.

Best Seats: United Business Class

  • 1B is the preferred F class seat over 1A, 1E, and 1F because there’s a cutout in the bulkhead in front of it which gives you extra legroom. If you can’t nab 1B, try for 1A, 1E, and 1F. These seats have less legroom but there’s still enough.

Worst Seats: Economy Plus

  • Row 15 is in front of the first exit row, so it does not recline. Flyers have also reported a misaligned window and minimal shoulder space in the window seats.
  • Rows 11 and 12 are missing a window.

Worst Seats: United Business Class

  • Row 4 in business class has minimal recline due to the bulkhead behind it. However, some flyers reported that the recline was still comfortable.

Note: There are two versions of the 737-700. View them  here .

United Airlines 737-900v1 Seats

737-900/MAX

The best seats: extra legroom.

  • All versions of this aircraft have extra legroom in row 7 as the bulkhead does not extend to the floor. However, 7A, 7B, and 7C have been replaced by a lavatory, so the proximity may not be desirable.

The Exit Row

  • Like the 737-800, rows 15 and 20 do not recline, and exit rows 20 and 21 have extra legroom. Row 21 window seats reportedly have a short armrest attached to the exit door, so it may be uncomfortable.

The Worst Seats: Economy Plus

  • This aircraft has an extra row of premium cabin seats, row 5. Flyers have reported that these seats do not recline and are next to the lavatories, making them unfavorable.
  • Seats 11A, 12A, and 12F do not have windows.

Note: There are three versions of the 737-900 currently in service. View them  here .

Boeing 757, United Airlines

The Boeings 757s

The 757 series aircraft have only a few seat layouts, two for the 757-200s, and only one for the 757-300. Consistent with the 737 series, bulkhead and exit row seats are the best for legroom, while regular economy should be avoided due to minimal pitch. Premium cabins on these aircraft feature lay-flat beds and received mixed reviews. It does not seem you could go wrong with any choice; however, aisle seats and row 1 may experience more galley noise and light.

united airlines seat row

United Airlines 757-200v1

The Best Seats: Economy Plus

  • 7A/7B/7C and 8D/8E/8F are behind the bulkhead, so there is plenty of legroom. Reviewers report these are the best economy seats on the aircraft.
  • Row 11 does not have a window.
  • Rows 12 and 20 have limited to no recline, which may be uncomfortable for an overnight or long-haul flight.
  • Seat 21A’s armrest is attached to the exit door and some flyers say that the location is quite chilly.

The Best Seats: United Business First

  • As far as premium cabins, most FlyerTalkers agreed that 1E/1F are better than 1A/1B and other rows because there’s less direct galley noise and light. However, due to the diagonal layout of the seats, it can be cramped if you’re over six feet tall.
  • Seat 4F is also good because its away from the galley so it has extra privacy. But, it’s close to the bathroom.
  • On version 2 of this aircraft, there are seven rows of business class. Reviewers suggest rows 1 and 5 due to the bulkhead adding extra legroom.

Note: There are two versions of the 757-200 currently in service. View them  here .

united airlines seat row

United Airlines 757-300

  • Seats 8A/8B/8C/8F have extra legroom due to the exit seats in front. 8D and 8E have regular economy plus legroom due to row 7 seats in front.
  • Row 21 is an exit row seat, but it has limited to no recline.

The Worst Seats: Economy

  • Row 20 has limited to no recline.
  • Row 17 is missing a window.

The Best Seats: Economy

  • Row 22 has prime seats due it being a two-seat configuration and having extra legroom.
  • Row 7 is also a two-seat configuration and may be favorable for couples. But, it is next to the bathroom.
  • Seats 1A/1B are by a large cutout in the bulkhead for a lot of extra legroom.

United Airlines Airbus A319

The Airbus Planes

The Airbus A319 and A320 only have one configuration per aircraft. They have less premium cabin seats available than other planes in the fleet and the reviews were mixed for all seat options. Economy Plus received good reviews, especially row 7 behind the bulkhead, while regular economy received complaints of cramping and little legroom.

united airlines seat row

United Airlines A319

  • Row 7 is the bulkhead seat and has extra legroom.
  • Row 21 reclines and has extra legroom, ideal for taller travelers.
  • Economy Plus has more than enough legroom and has comfortable seats. Many flyers reported that these seats on the A320 seemed wider than the 737 series aircraft and were the best Economy Plus seats on United mainline narrow-bodies.
  • Row 20 has extra legroom but does not recline.

The Worst Seats: United First

  • The premium cabin on the A320 was reported to have great legroom and recline on all seats, while the first row of the A319 has restricted legroom due to the bulkhead. Flyers complained of inadequate padding in A319 seats that made them uncomfortable on longer flights.

Note: There are two versions of the A319. View them  here . There are two versions of the A320. View them  here .

Additional Points

Reviews are pretty consistent on both FlyerTalk and SeatGuru. Here are some additional general points made that I want to highlight:

  • Flyers have reported reduced legroom in regular economy seats, so it may be beneficial to grab Economy Plus if you can.
  • For all narrow-body aircraft, the last row has limited to no recline and is next to the aft lavatories, so it would be wise to avoid these seats.
  • Bulkhead seats may have reduced width due to stationary armrests and may lack floor storage. Furthermore, on aircraft equipped with inflight entertainment, it does not always sit directly in front of the seat.

If you’re looking for the best economy seat on mainline United narrow body jets, based on the comments from FlyerTalkers and SeatGuru reviewers, I suggest the bulkhead seat and the last exit row seats. Both rows will give you the legroom and recline you desire (as long as the bulkhead does not extend to the floor, which in most cases, it does not). If you do not mind zero recline, then exit row 21’s legroom will be very roomy. I also suggest grabbing Economy Plus on any United flight, especially if you are tall. I am only 5’3”, so regular economy does not bother me, but I know that taller travelers can feel very cramped in 30′ to 31′ pitch seats. Additionally, row 22 and row 7 (two-seater rows) on the 757-300 seem incredibly comfortable.

If you’re a Premium Cabin flyer, then I do not think you can go wrong with most of the seat options; however, be aware of row 5 in the 737-900 as it reportedly does not recline. The A319 and A320 premium cabin seats seemed to receive the most complaints about comfort and worth, so you may be better off grabbing row 7 in economy plus for short flights. For 757 aircraft, row 1 near the galley, aisle seats, and rows near the lavatory received the most complaints due to noise, lights, and odor, so I would personally go with a window seat in row 2 or 3, but to each their own.

Because some aircraft have multiple seat layouts, it is important to check SeatGuru before your flight to see which aircraft version you will be flying on. Although, many FlyerTalkers have complained about SeatGuru’s reliability, so check out the full FlyerTalk wiki forum for favored United seats here .

How Do I Know Which Plane I’ll Be On?

The easiest way to find out what plane model you’ll be flying is to check United Airlines’ website. Simply click “details” on the flight you wish to reserve and the menu will show you–on the left-hand side, next to the United logo–what plane model you’re flying, along with information about the snack, wifi, and outlet situation on board. In the example below, this flight will be on a Boeing 737-900.

United Airlines Best Worst Seats

A small (and common) typo in the very beginning of the Airbus section: "They have less premium cabin seats available than other planes in the fleet and the reviews were mixed for all seat options" - they do not have "less premium cabin seats", they have fewer. When referring to an object with a specific number, use fewer.

Meg Butler thanks will try there.

I’m really surprised to read any recommendations for Row 1 on United narrow bodies other than 737-700. Legroom is more restricted than other rows almost across the board, you have no storage in front of you and depending on the aircraft you may have to use an overhead bin that’s behind you. There’s a reason that row 1 is generally booked last.

Interested in opinions on 777-200 Row 51 seats A,B or K,L please. Is there a window? Noise level. Is overhead bin storage right above the seats or down the aisle a bit? Thanks

If someone doesn't answer your question in the comments, try finding that model on this page and ask the question there. You may get a faster response. https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/united-airlines-mileageplus/1535765-consolidated-where-sit-united-plane-threads.html

There is no such plane as the "737-900 MAX". There is the 737-900 (both regular and 737-900ER), and the (grounded) 737 MAX 7, MAX8, 737 MAX9 and 737 MAX10.

Airplane passenger holding baby on lap should be ‘ashamed’ for bothering others, viral post claims.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A woman is sharing her recent airplane drama with others on social media after another woman tried to shame her for traveling with an infant who made some noise — and for switching seats.

Describing herself as 31 years old and traveling alone with a 19-month-old son on a three-hour flight, the woman said her child, who was “under age two,” had to sit on her lap.

“I also had a big backpack with all the necessities that I keep on the floor and easily accessible,” wrote the woman on the Reddit page known as “AITA” (“Am I the a–hole”).

“It can get crowded fast, but it’s just how it is when you travel alone with a young child.”

The woman continued in her post, “I got assigned a random seat (12C) at checkup, and ended up being in a row with no other empty seat. Although I appreciate it when there is an empty seat next to me as it greatly improves our flight experience, it’s not an expectation I have and I never ask for it.”

She said that once the passenger had boarded “but before take off, a flight attendant came to me and offered to move us three rows up … because there were two seats available, and that they usually try to accommodate  people with young infants .”

The mother, calling herself “Aggravating-Worth643” on Reddit, added, “I was delighted and accepted right away. The flight attendant helped me move my things and explained the situation to the other passenger” in that row.

Unhappy toddler boy crying and having a tantrum on an airplane flight

This did not go over well, apparently.

“The passenger did not appreciate it at all,” wrote the mother. “She started complaining to the flight attendant that she was planning to sleep on the flight, and that it would be impossible now. That she specifically chose this seat while checking [in] online because the row was empty,” but now, it was going “to be a nightmare.”

The woman said the flight attendant “simply explained that both my seats (old and new) were standard, that the woman only paid for her own seat and  that [the airline’s] policy  is to try to accommodate young parents if possible.”

The mother wrote about what happened next, “The woman told me that I should be ashamed to impose all this noise on people that are  just trying to enjoy their flight . Especially since it wasn’t even my seat and I didn’t even pay for it.”

The mother added, “Honestly, I’m really not good with confrontation. I usually end up either crying or apologizing, so I just ignored her all the way, as if she didn’t speak at all. That got her even more angry, but she finally stopped complaining after a while.”

“My son ended up crying only once, I got some stinky eye and some other rude comments — but all in all, the flight was way more comfortable for us this way, so I don’t really regret switching seats.”

She continued, “But I do wonder if I’m the [a–hole]. It’s true that I didn’t pay for that seat, and that it wasn’t my originally assigned seat.”

In an edit to her post, she clarified that her bag did “fit under the seat. It was there during takeoff and landing. It was on the floor the rest of the time for easy access.”

She also noted, “My son was on my lap the whole flight (as per the flight attendant’s demand). The extra seat was just extra space to feel less crowded and not bump elbows.”

Woman holding her crying toddler child by the airplane window during travel

She also wrote as a point of clarification, “I’m overweight, yes, but not extremely so. I haven’t lost all my  pregnancy weight  yet.”

She also noted that  she is from Europe .

Her son, she wrote, had to be in her lap — “the flight attendant insisted on it when she offered me [the switched] seats. We aren’t allowed to bring car seats with us. They go with luggage.”

Fox News Digital reached out to  a psychologist for insight  into the matter while others on the platform weighed in with a bevy of reaction. In less than 24 hours, some 6,000 people reacted with over 1,000 posting comments about the issue.

The other with the baby did nothing wrong, wrote one of the top commenters on the post — garnering 11,000 “upvotes” for this reaction.

“You paid for a seat, the airline accommodated you and explained to the other passenger,” wrote this top commenter. “The other passenger paid for her seat only, not the entire row.”

The same person continued, “Sounds like [the] other passenger was an unpleasant person, which isn’t your fault. If another  mother with a young child  did pay for the seats near her, I’d almost guarantee she would have complained still.”

Another commenter agreed that the mother on Reddit did nothing wrong.

“The other woman was never guaranteed those 2 seats would stay empty — they were just empty at the time of her booking.”

Another person said about the complaining passenger, “It was a 3-hour flight. Not a trip to New Zealand from New York. She’ll get over it.”

However, some others took issue with the mother’s apparent size, attitude and behavior.

“You’re a plus-size woman with a toddler and a big bag in front of you,” one writer commented. “That impedes access for other people in your row. You’re very inconsiderate of others and blocking the exit is not only a nuisance, but can be dangerous in [an] emergency.”

The same writer added, “You can purchase a seat for your toddler, but you won’t because it’s too expensive. It does feel like you’re hoping to get [an] extra seat for free. You should at least travel with luggage that fits under the seat or in the space above you.”

Video: Frontier Airline Passenger Arrested For Refusing To Comply With Exit Row Instructions

Notably, passengers sitting in emergency exit rows are asked by flight attendants before takeoff if they are willing and able to operate the exit door in the event there is an emergency during the flight.

Video: Frontier Airline Passenger Arrested For Refusing To Comply With Exit Row Instructions

She was eventually escorted off the plane by police officers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport

An unruly passenger was escorted off a Frontier Airlines flight in handcuffs after a heated dispute with flight attendants over exit row instructions. According to the New York Post,  the incident happened on May 9, when the unidentified woman argued with a flight attendant about the exit row requirements. When asked if she would help in the event of an emergency, she reportedly said: ''Oh, I'm not going to save anybody. If something happens, I'm going to save myself.''

The woman told the flight attendant she was "wasting her breath," as the crew member walked away. As the argument escalated, she got into a verbal altercation with another flight crew member after she was asked to exit the plane.

A third staff member also requested the woman to exit, but she refused and insisted on calling her lawyer. Meanwhile, one of the pilots confronted her as other passengers encouraged her to get off the plane. However, she insisted that she needed to reach her young grandson in Texas.

"Are you arresting me," she exclaimed. "What crime did I commit?"

She was eventually escorted off the plane by police officers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina. As a result, all the passengers had to deboard while she was taken away in a police car and the flight was delayed.

''This may have been her first time in an exit row so she did not understand or realize or want to understand that the flight attendant has to get a verbal yes from everyone when you are doing when you are going through the drill. And she had an attitude with giving the verbal yes because she thought shaking her head was sufficient and didn't realize or didn't want to realize why she had to give a verbal yes,'' a TikToker who captured the video explained.

'I'm Not Going To Save Anybody': Exit Row Passenger Argues With Flight Crew, Gets Herself Arrested

Flight attendants don't get paid nearly enough to deal with passengers like this..

Frontier Airlines plane on the runway

Congratulations! You got a seat in an exit row for your flight . All that sweet, sweet extra legroom is yours, and now the only thing that stands between you and actually being able to stretch your legs out is to simply say, “Yes,” when the flight attendant comes by to make sure you’re willing and able to help in the event of an emergency that almost definitely won’t happen. Easy peasy, right? Well, as the Independent reports , that wasn’t so easy for one Frontier Airlines passenger who actually managed to get herself arrested before takeoff.

Related Content

Video of the incident was recorded and posted on TikTok by an account called Travel with Tia. The video doesn’t begin quite at the beginning of the altercation, but the Independent has the explanation of what went down from Tia herself:

This lady right here, when she first got on the plane and acknowledged the exit row, she said, “Oh, I’m not going to save anybody.” She went on to say, “If something happens, I’m going to save myself.” That was her attitude throughout the seating process. And I already knew something was about to pop off when she had that attitude.

It’s possible that you could argue the woman’s response might have been an attempt at a joke, but neither takeoff nor landing are great times to joke with flight attendants. Plus, even if she meant it as a joke, once she noticed the flight attendant wasn’t laughing, that was her signal to apologize and promise to behave. Unfortunately for her and every other passenger on that flight, the woman in the exit row decided instead to double down.

Now, even if she really didn’t realize that arguing with flight attendants is a great way to ruin your day, you’d think the pilot coming over the loudspeaker to say, “Ladies and gentlemen, we’ll be underway here shortly, we gotta take care of this issue. Law enforcement will be arriving,” would have made it clear that it was time to pack things in and beg for leniency. She instead pivoted to trying to get other passengers on her side by insisting the flight attendant was lying about her not complying.

Considering the fact that this woman was wasting everyone’s time and potentially delaying the flight, the crew was far more accommodating than you might expect, even giving her one last warning. “I’m gonna ask you one more time, nicely, to get off, if not, we’re going to de-board the plane and police will come and escort you off,” one crew member told her. Instead of simply getting off the plane, though, she kept complaining and claimed she was going to call her lawyer. Had they picked up, you can only assume they would have told her to comply with crew member instructions because, well, duh.

Eventually, though, the fuck-around stage of her flight ended, and the find-out stage kicked off in full swing. After even the pilot came back to try to get her to deplane voluntarily, police came on board to escort her out, forcing all passengers to deplane, as well. The woman, whose name does not appear to have been released, was taken away in handcuffs.

What charges she’s facing are also currently not clear, although we can’t imagine she’ll ever fly Frontier again. If you’re on a Spirit Airlines flight in the future, though, you might want to keep an eye out for her. She just might throw a wrench into your travel plans, as well.

Frontier Airlines passenger refuses to comply with exit row instructions causing plane to deboard

A Frontier Airlines passenger refused to comply with exit row instructions from a cabin crew member forcing everyone on the flight to deboard.

In a viral TikTok posted on 9 May, travel blogger Tia (@ travelwithtia23 ) shared with viewers how an unidentified woman in glasses argued with airline employees. Meanwhile, her fellow passengers were pleading with her to deboard the plane for all of their sakes.

“This lady right here, when she first got on the plane and acknowledged the exit row, she said, ‘Oh, I’m not going to save anybody. If something happens, I’m going to save myself,’” Tia explained. “That was her attitude throughout the seating process. And I already knew something was about to pop off when she had that attitude.”

The video shows the woman arguing with a female flight attendant , gesturing to another flight attendant: “Yeah, she talking to me - what is the problem?”

”Cause she don’t wanna tell us her name?” she interrupted the airline worker as she set down her drink on the aircraft floor. The flight attendant attempted to finish her sentence, “If it’s gonna be a problem-”

“A problem? What’s the problem?’ the woman interrupted as the flight attendant continued to try to relay the exit row instructions mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). “We ain’t got no problem with that. We understand we gotta help people get off the plane and help Betty White if something happens.”

“What’s the problem? We agreed,” she repeated as passengers began to laugh in the background and the flight attendant walked away. “You wasting your breath. Is they gonna take this plane off the ground?”

The woman then set her phone on the ground female passenger and picked up a snack before turning to the other flight attendant, saying: “Get out my damn face.”

“Did you ask her to agree? You ain’t doing your job,’ she continued as the flight attendant employee put her hands in front of the passenger’s face. The passenger recoiled and opened up her snack. “You better get out my face is what you need to do, Betty.”

After they exchanged a few more words, the flight attendant walked away, but as she began to eat her snack another employee came to her to deliver a piece of paper. Immediately, the passenger became upset, with the employee attempting to talk her down. The employee said, “They said you were not listening-”

The woman tried to plead her case, saying that people witnessed her agreeing with the instructions, but the airline employee waved over another flight attendant.

“We all agreed. Everybody can witness that,” the woman saying that she was flying to take care of her 4-year-old grandson while his mother was on vacation. “And my grandson is getting off, out of school, and his mama took a flight to Mexico, and I’m not getting off this plane.”

The captain then got involved, announcing to the passengers: “Ladies and gentlemen, we’ll be underway here shortly, we gotta take care of this issue. Law enforcement will be arriving.”

She was eventually escorted off the plane by police officers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, but unfortunately, all passengers had to deboard with her.

The unidentified woman defied the FAA requirement that says that passengers seated in an exit row must not only read instructions but also verbally confirm that they will carry out the physical duties of assisting others in case of an emergency.

‘Can I get a refund?’: American Airlines passenger can’t believe her strange aisle seat

'as a 5’0” person, i would be offering that seat to the highest bidder'.

Posted on May 21, 2024   Updated on May 21, 2024, 9:51 am CDT

An American Airlines passenger had an unusually placed aisle seat that made her feel self-conscious, but other people viewing her video about it declared it to be the best seat on the plane.

The TikTok comes from creator Hot Lambda (@champagneemami7), and it has received over 371,500 views since going up on April 22. In it, the creator describes herself as “lowkey feeling embarrassed” about her aisle seat on a flight.

What’s wrong with it?

The seat juts out into the aisle, offset from the row of seats in front of it. It does provide some extra legroom but also leaves her feeling a bit exposed.

There’s also a follow-up video that shows a distinct drawback to the seat: There’s a screen on the left armrest that’s smaller than the screens in other rows’ seat backs. When she pulls it up to view it, it tilts forward and to the right, leaving her frustrated and having to watch the screen of the person next to her, who does have a seat aligned with the row in front of it as is customary on planes.

The follow-up video reveals that the seat also has its own foldout tray table, versus the typical airline tray table, which folds out from the seat in front of each row.

The creator is clearly discontent, judging from the on-screen caption in the first video, which asks, “Why is this the aisle seat on American Airlines and can I get a refund?”

@champagneemami7 Asked for the aisle seat and this is what i got 🫠 cant wait to see the food… #gotpranked #traveldiaries #gotprankedagain #dontflyamerican ♬ Funny – Gold-Tiger

As an American Airlines customer, she may have indeed paid a premium for that seat. According to NerdWallet , seats run from “free — for standard seats except when booking basic economy fares — to over $160 for an extra-legroom seat on a long-haul international flight.”

The article goes on to say, “American Airlines seat selection fees vary based on several factors — including the flight length and what type of seat you want. Window and aisle seats are generally the most expensive. Meanwhile, a middle seat in between two preferred seats might not cost anything.”

Hot Lambda continued to express dismay in the caption accompanying the video, reporting, “Asked for the aisle seat and this is what i got,” with a #gotpranked hashtag.

Is it that bad?

Some of the commenters to the original video felt Hot Lambda was lucky to have a seat with so much legroom.

“That’s not an aisle seat,” one asserted. “That’s a premium seat.”

“That’s like a holy grail seat. Why are you unhappy?” another inquired.

Yet another pointed out, “As a 5’0″ person, I would be offering that seat to the highest bidder!”

However, some did understand there were drawbacks to the seat.

“I had this seat on a Qatar night flight and everyone just stepped on my feet and invaded my space walking up the aisle,” one shared.

Someone else added, “I’m with you bc where does your personal item go? Or anything you want to use in flight??? And anyone who walks down the aisle is just staring.”

One person called it an “introvert’s worst nightmare.”

And finally, one pointed out, “I feel like I had a nightmare about this seat and I tumbled down the aisle.”

How to snag an exit-row seat when flying U.S. carriers

Katie Genter

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Whether you are 6'7" like TPG founder and CEO Brian Kelly , or you simply want more space, you might want to book an exit-row seat for your next flight.

With tight seat pitch in economy on many airlines, travelers covet exit-row seats for the extra legroom they often provide. Many airlines allow flyers who have elite status to select exit-row seats for free either at booking or at check-in. But there are often ways for non-elites to snag these seats as well.

Although exit-row seats have their benefits, there are also downsides. For example:

  • Exit-row seats are often narrow due to fixed armrests
  • The tray table and entertainment screen may extend from the armrest and be uncomfortable to use on exit-row seats
  • Exit-row window seats often only have partial armrests, limited window views and limited legroom due to the exit door design
  • Aircraft designed often located lavatories near exit-row seats on wide-body aircraft
  • Seats in the first of two exit rows generally won't recline

So, consider the tradeoffs. And, of course, you can only sit in an exit-row seat if you're willing and able to assist in case of an emergency . But, if you'd decided you want an exit-row seat, today I'll discuss how to snag one on 10 popular US-based airlines.

Get the latest points, miles and travel news by signing up for TPG's free daily newsletter .

Alaska Airlines

united airlines seat row

Alaska's website states that only Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan elite members can reserve exit-row seating in advance. Non-elites can check-in as usual and then ask any customer service agent at their departure airport about exit-row availability. But, doing so is only likely to get you an exit-row seat occasionally.

Non-elites looking to snag exit-row seats in advance will want to fly Alaska's A321 aircraft . On this aircraft type, Alaska usually classifies exit-row seats near the plane's rear as Saver seats.

united airlines seat row

You can search your route on Alaska's website and click "Preview Seats" under each option until you find one with exit-row seats bookable as Saver seats. But, you'll be out of luck on most Alaska flights since I only found exit-row seats available as Saver seats on the A321.

If you need extra space but can't snag an exit-row seat on Alaska Airlines, you could purchase a Premium Class seat after selecting a Main or Saver fare. Although Premium Class usually doesn't include exit-row seating, it does provide four extra inches of legroom and a complimentary drink.

Alternatively, if you have elite status with another airline, you might be able to status match and challenge to get Alaska Airlines elite status . Doing so would allow you to select exit-row seats on most Alaska Airlines flights while you work to earn status with Alaska Airlines .

Allegiant Air

Allegiant Air charges between $0 and $80 to select a seat during booking. However, on most routes I checked, the price to reserve an exit-row seat at booking was between $16 and $29.

If you don't purchase a seat while booking, you can purchase a seat before check-in using the Manage Travel page. Or, you can purchase a seat during online check-in. But, Allegiant won't change your seat assignment at the airport or once you've pointed your boarding pass.

American Airlines

united airlines seat row

American Airlines classifies most, if not all, exit-row seats as Main Cabin Extra seats. The following elite members can snag Main Cabin Extra seats for free:

  • American Airlines AAdvantage Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro and Platinum members (at booking for the member and up to eight travelers on the same reservation)
  • Oneworld Sapphire and Emerald members with elite status on British Airways, Iberia, Finnair or Japan Airlines (at booking for the member and up to eight travelers on the same reservation)
  • AAdvantage Gold and Oneworld Ruby members with elite status on British Airways, Iberia, Finnair or Japan Airlines (within 24 hours of departures when seats are available)

If you don't have elite status with American Airlines or select Oneworld partners, you can still pay to select Main Cabin Extra or Preferred seats, including exit rows. Plus, Main Cabin Extra seats come with complimentary beer, wine and spirits on flights with full beverage service.

united airlines seat row

Prices vary for Main Cabin Extra seats depending on the route. But, prices are seemingly the same regardless of date or whether you get a window, aisle or middle seat. For example, for a flight from Chicago (ORD) to Los Angeles (LAX), exit-row seats cost $95. And for a short hop from Washington (DCA) to Portland (PWM), exit-row seats cost $43.

united airlines seat row

You can pay to select seats even when flying on an American Airlines basic economy ticket. Unfortunately, American Airlines is seemingly blocking most exit-row seats on its widebody aircraft. So I was unable to check exit-row seating costs on transcontinental and long-haul international flights.

Delta Air Lines

united airlines seat row

Delta's designates most exit-row seating in the economy cabin as Preferred Seating. But, you can also snag extra legroom in Delta's extra-legroom Comfort+ seating, which the carrier technically sells as a separate class of service. And you can purchase Preferred or Comfort+ seating on any Main Cabin ticket.

All Delta elite status levels get complimentary Preferred Seats and Comfort+ upgrades, although Comfort+ upgrades will clear at different times for different status levels. But, if you're flying on a Delta Basic Economy fare, you're not eligible for paid or complimentary upgrades to Preferred or Comfort+ seating.

united airlines seat row

On the Boeing 767-400 , a widebody jet Delta uses on many transcontinental, European and South American routes , exit-row seats are only available in one row and sold as Preferred Seating. I checked the JFK to LAX route on several dates and the buy-up to a Preferred exit-row seat was $159. However, the cost of a Comfort+ seat with extra legroom ranged from $139 to $179. So, many passengers looking for extra legroom might prefer the Comfort+ seat over the exit row.

united airlines seat row

For a short-haul route from Atlanta (ATL) to Savannah (SAV) on Delta's Boeing 717-200 , you can select exit-row seats with limited recline on a Main Cabin fare for no additional cost. However, for flights on this route operated by Delta's CRJ900 , exit-row seats (including some with limited recline) cost $9. Alternatively, you can select Comfort+ seats with extra legroom on both aircraft types for a modest amount that ranged from $14 to $19 on several dates I checked.

Frontier Airlines

united airlines seat row

Frontier Airlines sells Stretch Seating that has five to seven more inches of legroom than standard seats. Stretch Seating costs between $35 and $70 per flight. Frontier says that purchasing seats at booking provides the best price.

Frontier's aircraft generally have Stretch Seating in the first couple rows that provide 36" of legroom and exit-row seating that provides 38" of legroom. There are two consecutive exit rows on some Frontier aircraft, but Frontier only marks row 13 as Stretch Seating. After all, row 12 has extra legroom but isn't pre-reclined. So, if you don't mind not being pre-reclined, row 12 may present an opportunity to get extra legroom at a discount.

Hawaiian Airlines

united airlines seat row

Hawaiian sells exit-row seats as Extra Comfort Seats on Airbus A321 and A330 routes and as Preferred Seats on all neighbor island routes. Hawaiian Pualani Platinum and Pualani Gold elites are eligible for upgrades to Extra Comfort and Preferred Seats at the airport based on availability.

However, you can purchase an upgrade to Extra Comfort and Preferred Seats at booking or after booking as long as you didn't buy a Main Cabin Basic fare. A Preferred Seat on a neighbor island flight costs just $10 per passenger each way. But, Extra Comfort Seats on A321 and A330 routes vary in cost.

JetBlue's exit rows are all sold as Even More Space seats, which have up to seven inches more pitch than standard JetBlue seats.

The cost to reserve an Even More Space seat varies based on route and seat location. For example, exit-row Even More Space seats on JetBlue's Boston (BOS) to Los Angeles (LAX) route cost between $99 and $101. Meanwhile, exit-row Even More Space seats on the New York (LGA) to Boston (BOS) route cost between $30 and $32.

united airlines seat row

You can also use JetBlue miles to reserve an Even More Space seat. Unlike on many airlines, JetBlue elites don't receive complimentary upgrades to Even More Space seats. However, JetBlue elites do get discounted prices when using miles to reserve Even More Space seats .

Southwest Airlines

united airlines seat row

Southwest does boarding and seating a bit differently. No one is assigned a seat, so there's no way to reserve an exit row. Instead, you merely select whatever available seat you want when you board.

Southwest determines boarding order by the order you sign in when check-in opens 24 hours before departure. But, even if you check-in immediately, Southwest elites and those who purchase a Business Select fare, Upgraded Boarding or EarlyBird Check-in will be ahead of you.

If I check-in precisely 24 hours before departure or purchase EarlyBird Check-in , I'll usually be able to snag an exit-row seat. But, I might end up in a middle seat or have to argue with someone who is attempting to save a seat .

So, if you're serious about making sure you get an exit-row seat, you'll want to purchase a Business Select fare or upgraded boarding — which is often available for purchase at the gate before boarding. Business Select fares are usually substantially more expensive than other fares, but upgraded boarding is often available for $30 to $50. And cardholders of the Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card get four upgraded boardings per year when available.

Spirit Airlines

united airlines seat row

TPG founder and CEO Brian Kelly enjoyed Spirit when he flew in an exit row from Havana to Ft. Lauderdale in 2017. Regular seats, including exit-row seats that provide up to 10 inches more legroom, cost between $1 and $50 to reserve. The specific cost varies based on route and seat location.

In some cases, Big Front Seats will be a better value than exit-row seats. Big Front Seats cost $12 to $150 when purchased in advance and $25 to $175 when purchased onboard. These seats provide 36" pitch and 18.5" width, which makes them similar to domestic first-class products offered on other U.S. carriers.

For example, here's what seat costs currently look like on a flight from ORD to LAS in May:

united airlines seat row

Big Front Seats and exit-row seats sometimes sell out. So, it's best to purchase your seat early if you're sure you want the extra space.

United Airlines

united airlines seat row

United Airlines allows you to reserve some exit-row seats that the airline designates as Preferred seats. Additionally, you can also purchase extra-legroom Economy Plus seating. If you buy a United Basic Economy ticket , you can pay to reserve Preferred exit-row seats at any point or Economy Plus seats at check-in .

The cost to reserve Preferred or Economy Plus seating varies. For example, for a United 757-200 flight between EWR and SFO in May, exit-row seats range from $19 to $139. The first row of exit-row seats is classified as Preferred seating due to limited or no recline and costs $19 to $29 to reserve. The second row is classified as Economy Plus seating and costs $134 to $139.

united airlines seat row

Or, for a flight from EWR to BOS in May, an exit-row seat will cost you between $25 and $26 on United's 737-700 .

united airlines seat row

United MileagePlus Premier members get complimentary access to Economy Plus and Preferred seats. All MileagePlan Premier elites can select Preferred seats for no charge at booking. And Premier Gold and higher members can snag Economy Plus seats at booking, while Premier Silver members can select Economy Plus seats at check-in. You can also purchase an Economy Plus subscription from United if you fly the airline frequently but don't have status.

Since United elites and subscription members will snag the best seats as departure nears, it's best to purchase exit-row or Economy Plus seats when you book if you know you want the extra room.

Bottom line

If you're tall or simply want extra legroom, exit-row seats can make your economy flight much more comfortable. As shown in this guide, almost every airline will charge you to reserve exit-row seats. Of course, you can always try asking nicely for an exit-row seat at the airport. Although asking will sometimes net you an exit-row seat, it's better to plan ahead and pay if you want to guarantee yourself an exit row.

Be sure to understand the details of the seat you're paying to reserve, though. If there are two adjacent exit rows, usually the seats in the first row won't recline. Some aircraft may have exit doors that restrict the legroom of the passenger in the exit-row window seat. Other airlines, like United, discount the price of these sub-optimal exit-row seats, while others will sell them at full price. And, remember: some airlines sell seats that may be more comfortable than exit-row seats at a similar price — such as Spirit's Big Front Seat . So be sure to check all your options before simply assuming the exit row is the best place to sit in economy.

Delta has the best first class, and Southwest has the best economy seats — see how airlines rank for customer satisfaction

  • Data analytics firm JD Power released its annual airline customer satisfaction study on Wednesday.
  • Delta rated best first/business and premium economy cabins. Southwest won for best economy cabin.
  • Overall, the study found traveler satisfaction driven most by desire for a safe and easy experience.

Insider Today

Delta Air Lines has reclaimed its crown as passengers' No. 1 pick for its first/business class , according to JD Power's newest airline rankings.

Delta regained the top spot after coming in second last year to JetBlue Airways. JetBlue fell to second place this year, followed by United Airlines.

JD Power released the annual North American Airline Satisfaction Study on Wednesday. It gauged consumer sentiment toward 11 major airlines in the US and Canada across three categories: first/business class, premium economy class, and economy/basic economy.

Delta's premium economy class claimed the top spot for the second year in a row, with Alaska Airlines in second place and American Airlines in third. Last year's runner's up, JetBlue, dropped to fourth place.

Southwest Airlines took top honors in the economy/basic economy segment for the third consecutive year, followed by Delta for the second year in a row. Allegiant Air finished in third place, up three spots from last year.

Air Canada, on the other hand, ranked last in customer satisfaction in the first/business class and premium economy categories. For the second consecutive year, Frontier Airlines finished last in the economy/basic economy segment with Spirit Airlines ranked one spot ahead.

JD Power also highlighted some other takeaways from the survey — specifically, how staffing and media attention can influence airline rankings .

"The big takeaway from this year's study is the power of people to positively influence the overall flight experience," said JD Power senior managing director Michael Taylor in a statement."Airlines that are investing in staff training and recruitment are finding ways to overcome the negative effects of crowded gates and planes simply by being nice to their customers."

The study also found that trust and ease of travel have superseded price as key driving factors for consumer satisfaction. According to JD Power, what's most important to customers, beyond the cost of a ticket, is simply to have a safe, drama-free flight .

Media coverage can significantly affect consumer trust in airlines, as well, the survey found. JD Power said consumers who reported seeing negative media coverage of an airline rated it much lower than others in terms of trust.

JD Power's 2024 study is based on responses from 9,582 passengers who had flown on a major North American airline within the previous month of completing the survey, which was conducted between March 2023 and March 2024.

Here's a closer look at how the 11 major North American airlines fared in each segment of the study.

Transatlantic flight diverted over safety risk after laptop got 'stuck' in cabin

united airlines seat row

A laptop that got "stuck in an inaccessible location" in the cabin of an United Airlines aircraft caused a transatlantic flight to be diverted this weekend, arriving at its final destination more than a day later, according to the airline.

United Airlines flight 12 departed from Zurich on Sunday morning and was heading toward Chicago when it turned around over the Atlantic Ocean about five hours into the nearly 10-hour-long flight, according to FlightAware . The Boeing 767 diverted to Shannon, Ireland "to address a potential safety risk" caused by the stray laptop, a United Airlines spokesperson told USA TODAY in an email.

The airline did not confirm where the laptop got stuck.

Electronic devices that use lithium batteries are "a great source of power, cheap power and dependable but unfortunately, they're extremely volatile ," Ross Aimer, CEO of Aero Consulting Experts with over 55 years of pilot experience, told USA TODAY. "The term (airlines) use is (thermal) runaway, which basically means catching fire."

The pressure from the seat or moving the seats could have caused the battery in the laptop to ignite.

Once on fire, "you cannot put them out even if you submerge them in water... that was the fear of the crew, that the laptop would catch fire. Obviously, we can't have fire onboard the aircraft."

Since the flight crew had hit their maximum duty time, the flight had to be rescheduled for the next day. "When they diverted, you're adding time," Aimer said.

The carrier said it provided hotel accommodations for the 157 passengers in Shannon and arranged for a new plane to resume the flight to Chicago on Monday.

Aimer warned passengers to "be very, very cognizant" of their electronics and to tell a crew member if one is heating up more than normal. Some airlines now have specialized fire containment bags to help contain the fire from devices.

The Federal Aviation Administration has banned lithium-ion and lithium metal batteries – like in power banks, laptops or cell phone battery charging cases – from being stored in checked luggage, and must be put in carry-on baggage.

Between March 2006 and April 2024, there have been 530 verified incidents involving lithium batteries causing smoke, fire or extreme heat, according to the FAA . Of those, 387 were on passenger aircrafts.

Frontier Airlines eliminates change fees and introduces 4 new fare classes

The airline currently charges up to $99 for flight changes.

ABCNews logo

Frontier Airlines has announced that it is eliminating change fees on some tickets, part of its effort to appeal to more travelers.

The changes, which took effect on May 17, aim to simplify the ticket-buying process.

The Denver-based airline, known for its cheap fares, previously charged for additional services like seat assignments and carry-on baggage, similar to rivals Spirit Airlines and Allegiant Air.

Frontier is now introducing packages that bundle these extras, including early boarding. Most customers are expected to opt for these new bundled options, though some fares will still offer a la carte choices.

"Today marks the beginning of a new era for Frontier - one with transparency in our prices, no change fees and the lowest total price," Barry Biffle, CEO of Frontier Airlines, said in the official press release.

"This is 'The New Frontier' and we are committed to offering more than the lowest fares -- we deliver the best price for all the options you want and the customer support you need, when you need it. No gimmicks, just really low prices and good customer service," the statement continued.

The new "economy" bundle, which includes a carry-on bag and seat assignment, will start at $30 more than the base fare.

The "premium" bundle, offering these perks plus early boarding, will cost $50 more. For an additional $100, the "business" bundle will provide travelers with two checked bags and a front-row seat with extra legroom.

This move follows a final rule issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation last month, which requires airlines to disclose all fees, including those for checked and carry-on baggage. The DOT estimates this change will save travelers over half a billion dollars annually.
