There are different kinds of adverbs expressing different meaning. The following are some of the common ones.

1. Adverb of time: An adverb of time tell us when something is done or happens. We use it at the beginning. Adverbs of time include afterwards, already, always, immediately, last month, now, soon, then, and yesterday.

  • He collapsed and died yesterday.
  • His factory was burned down a few months ago.
  • Last week, we were stuck in the lift for an hour.

2. Adverb of place: Adverb of place is an adverb which tells us about the place where something is done or happens in the sentence. It is used generally after the verb, object or end of the sentence. Adverbs of place are like below, here, above, inside, outside, there, over there, under, upstairs, etc.

  • We need to stop here for dinner.
  • He was eating under the table.
  • A bird fly above in the sky.

3. Adverb of manner: An adverb of manner tells us how something is done or happens. Most adverbs of manner end in -ly such as badly, happily, sadly, slowly, quickly, and others that include well, hard, fast.

  • The brothers were badly injured in the fight.

  • At the advanced age of 88, she still sang very well.

4. Adverb of Degree or Quantity: Adverb of degree or quantity is an adverb which tell s us about the level or extent of something is done or happens in the sentence. It is used before the adjective or adverb. Adverbs of degree or quantity are like almost, nearly, quite, much, really, too, very, so, etc.

  • It was too hard task for us to complete. (adverb is used before adjective)
  • I am quite.
  • I am feeling really sad for my friend’s father death.

5. Adverb of frequency: An adverb of frequency tells us how often something is done or happens. Words used as adverbs of frequency include again, almost, ever, frequently, generally, hardly, ever, nearly, always, never, occasionally, often, rarely, seldom, sometime, twice, usually and weekly.

  • They were almost fifty when they got married.
  • He hardly ever say something nice to his wife.
  • While overseas, he frequently phoned home.
  • She is not nearly always right although she thinks she is always right.
  • He complained that she never smiled back.

Adverbs of Purpose Adverbs of purpose express the purpose of an action. Commonly used adverbs of purpose are hence, consequently, therefore, thus. The following phrases are also used as adverbs of purpose: in order to, on account of, so that. Mona often tells lies. Hence, no one believes what she says. Mira buys her clothes during sales. Consequently, she gets them at a very low price. Niren lost his scholarship. He, therefore, left college. The match was postponed on account of rain. I stopped the car in order to ask for directions.

What is Adverb?

Definition: An adverb is a word in a sentence that modifies the meaning of the verb or another adverb , or adjective or phrase or a clause , telling us how , how often , when , or where something is prepared.

1. Adverbs of Place

Adverbs of place determine where something occurs or where an action takes place. They are usually put after the clause that they adjust or after the verb. This does not edit other adverbs or adjectives . These are normally arranged at the end of the sentence and adverbs of time are similarly placed at the end of the sentence. The most commonly used adverbs of place are everywhere, upstairs, where, outwards, inwards, outside, within, out, above, below, near, far, somewhere. Adverbs of place answer the question~ Where?

  • The old man is sitting outside the house.
  • Abhinav sent his son away .
  • Does Riya stay here ?
  • Rajni went upstairs for some work.
  • Ruhi is studying inside .

2. Adverbs of Time

The word that expresses time and shows us when an activity occurred, including for how long and how frequently/often is called adverbs of time. Adverb expressions of time at once, since they are ordinarily fixed at the right start or the right end of the sentence. Adverb of time such as eventually, later, now, recently, soon, then. today, tomorrow, afterward, immediately, yesterday, last week, ago, next year, etc. It answers the question- when?

Examples of Adverbs of Time for class 8

  • They will visit our company tomorrow .
  • I have played this game before .
  • Sonam recently got a job.
  • I have to go immediately to the hospital.
  • I often eat eggs.

3. Adverbs of Manner

Adverbs of manner show us how, or in what way, or in what manner an action is taking place. It helps to solve the question- how? Generally, adverbs of manner are set next to the verb or next to the object. Adverbs of manner are usually created by joining -ly to an adjective. If the formation of the sentence is verb + preposition + object the adverb can be arranged next to the object or before the preposition. The most common adverbs of manner are; safely, regularly, hard, hungrily, quickly, brightly, agreeably, slowly, happily, quietly, rapidly, honestly, blindly, successfully, etc.

  • Rishu sings beautifully .
  • Kelly replied to all the questions correctly .
  •  He asked politely   for food.
  • Rahul ate his breakfast hungrily .
  • Alex quickly completed his homework.

4. Adverbs of Degree 

Adverbs of degree show us the degree or intensity of an action, an adjective, or another adverb. The adverb simply modifies verbs. Usually, it is fixed after the word to which it qualifies. It is arranged before the adjective, verb, or adverb. Adverb of degree is also put before or after nouns and pronouns. The most commonly used adverbs of degree are much, extremely, just, almost, quite, very, fairly, completely, far, rather, scarcely, so, too, absolutely, barely, hardly, nearly, only, etc . The Adverb only modifies verbs.

  • The burger was too salty.
  • This novel is quite impressive.
  • It’s extremely tough to learn Sanskrit.
  • Jenny only likes painting.
  • I completely agree with Jenny.

5. Adverbs of Frequency

Adverbs of frequency show us how frequently an action follows. It acknowledges the question- how often. These are normally determined before the leading verb and after any auxiliary verb. It is arranged at the start and the end of the sentence. The most common adverbs of frequency are twice a week, even, frequently, occasionally, annually, always, rarely, often, yearly, once, again, never, seldom, periodically, repeatedly, usually, continually, etc.

Example of Adverbs of frequency for class 8

  • Vishal always drinks hot water.
  • I never eat non-veg food.
  • Tina washes her hair twice a week .
  • I sometimes dance with my child.
  • I usually go to the park for a walk with my friends.

Relative adverbs act like relative pronouns. Relative adverbs help to join clauses or sentences by using where, when, and why . They substitute the more precise formation of prepositions , which is utilized to add a relative clause.

7. Interrogative Adverbs

Adverbs that are applied to frame questions are called Interrogative adverbs. The words like where, when, how, why how long, how far, and how often are utilized to ask questions and it is set at the beginning of a question. Interrogative adverbs include a noun clause.

FORMATION OF ADVERBS

In most maximum cases, an adverb is formed by attaching -ly, -ally, i+ly to an adjective .

Adverb Phrases Worksheet For Class 8

An adverb phrase serves the same purpose as an adverb. That means it modifies the verb. Adverb phrases often begin with a preposition. Actually, most prepositional phrases are also adverb phrases.

An  adverb phrase  can be made up of two adverbs. Examples are:  very quickly, so easily, quite efficiently, too fast  etc.

Prepositional phrases  indicating time or place are also  adverb phrases . Examples are:  in the afternoon, under the bed, in the pond etc.

Infinitive phrases  can also act as adverb phrases. Examples are:  to get dressed, to start with, to sum up

Underline the adverb phrases in the following sentences.

An adverb is a word that adds meaning to a verb, an adjective or another adverb. It tells you how a thing is done, when it is done or where it is done. An adverb can modify a verb, an adjective or another adverb.

Adverbs are of the following kinds:

  • Adverbs of time show when an action is done. Example: The children are playing now.
  • Adverbs of manner show how or the manner in which an action is done. Example: Sachin works quietly .
  • Adverbs of degree show how much or to what extent a things is done. Example: The theatre was completely full.
  • Adverbs of place show where an action is done. Example: Due to rains, the guests moved inside .
  • Adverbs of frequency tell how often or how frequently an action takes place. Example: Priya is often mistaken for her twin sisters.
  • Interrogative adverbs are used to ask questions about time, manner, and place. Example: Where are you working?
  • Relative adverbs refer to the thing or person that the pronoun refers to. Example: I rested whenever I got an opportunity.
  • Sentence adverbs modify a complete sentence and not just part of it. Such words are usually formed by adding ‘-ly’ to adjectives. Example: Clearly, they san well and won the competition.
  • Adverbs of reason logically connect the conclusion with the argument made in the previous sentence. Example: I am not feeling well. Hence, I am unable to join you.
