Hi, Abhaya here. Thankyou for the worksheet, but I have a doubt. Can u solve it??? pls tomorrow is my exam., Why we are putting an before MSC teacher??????????

Sorry for replying late. I hope your exam went well. We used an before MSC because the first sound of pronunciation in word MSC is “em-es-see,” with a vowel sound (“em”). In such cases, it’s correct to use “an” before “MSC.” The word M is not vowel but its usage here is producing vowel sound causing us to use “an” before it. I hope it is clear now.

Hello readers, Welcome back to Performdigi , In this article, we are going to discuss the topic “ articles” for class 7 we have discussed in detail, we have also some questions regarding the article with answers . using the worksheet you can enrich your knowledge of English grammar articles for class 7 . we have designed this article in such a way if read thoroughly, you can answer all the questions given below and you will better understand the use of articles . Let’s dive in without any further ado.

Definition of the article for class 7th-   the words a , an and the are articles.

There are two types of articles:

  • Indefinite articles ( a & an )
  • The definite article ( the )

Difference between indefinite and definite articles:

Indefinite articles( a & an) – it does not point to a particular person , an animal , place to thing .

The definite article (the) – does point out a particular name , place , animal , or thing .

Uses of the indefinite article

  • Indefinite articles a and an are used before countable nouns .
  • An is used before vowels (a,e,i,o,u)

For example

  • an elephant

2. a and an are used according to the sound of the noun . We use a when we have a consonant noun before we place the article

  • a matchstick
  • a cup of coffee

3. There are some exceptions of nouns that start with a vowel but we put an in front of them as an articles

  • a university
  • a one-rupee note
  • a one-eyed person

The words like union , university , European start with vowels e and u  but they have a sound of you in them, the sound of you is considered to be a consonant sound, this is the reason we used an in front of them.

The words like a one-eyed person and one-rupee note have o which is a vowel in front of them, but we still used an article before them because it has a sound of woo . Woo is considered as a consonant so we use an in front of them.

4. There are few exceptions, we used a for some uncountable nouns as well.

For Example

  • Nami caught a cold
  • Don’t make noise students
  • What a pity Ron, after five years

5. An article is used for countable nouns which consist of vowels (a,e, I,o,u)

For example

  • an Oestrich
  • an envelope
  • an umbrella
  • an- ink pot
  • an interesting movie

All the above nouns are singular countable nouns and have a vowel and a vowel sound in them. This is the reason we used an as the article.

6. We used an in front of as well. As of now, it is considered to be in the family of vowels. When we say h, it sounds of a and o, which are articles. Now we an article in front of words which are starting with h.

  • an honorable leader
  • an honest child

We use the:

The is a definite article. It is used to refer to a particular noun, or when both the speaker and hearer know what is being referred to. Examples:

  • Shweta feels like eating an egg.
  • Aamir is reading the comic book Shweta gave him.

Α/ΑΝ Both a and an are used with singular countable nouns. Examples:

  • Little Tim is eating an orange. I have a test today.

We cannot say a gold (✗), a water (✗), a strength (✗), because these nouns are uncountable. We use a before nouns beginning with a consonant sound. Example:

  • I spotted a tiger at the national park.

We use an before nouns beginning with a vowel sound. Example:

  • We also saw an ostrich at the farm.

Note that a noun may begin with one of the five vowel letters (a, e, i, o, u) but begin with a consonant sound. A noun may also begin with a consonant but have a vowel sound. We use a or an based on the sounds, not letters.

  • Neha has a university degree. (“university’ is spelled with a vowel, but pronounced ‘yoo – niversity’)
  • This is a one – way road. (‘one’ is spelled with a vowel, but pronounced ‘won’)
  • Sumit is an honest trader. (silent consonant ‘h’in the beginning, so begins with an ‘o’ sound)

If there is an adjective before the noun, the same rule applies. If the adjective has a vowel sound, use an; if it has a consonant sound, use a. Examples:

  • It was a bad orange.
  • I just finished an excellent book.

THE The is used: before some proper nouns such as, names of monuments, oceans, mountain ranges, holy books, directions, seas, rivers, newspapers, magazines, families and titles, etc. Examples:

  • the Taj Mahal, the Pacific Ocean, the Alps, the Bible, the Arabian Sea, the Nile, the Khans, the Prime Minister, the Caravan

with parallel structures Example:

  • The sooner you go, the better.

Repetition Of Articles In some cases, it is important to repeat the articles to make the meaning clear. If there are two or more adjectives in the same sentence referring to the same noun, the article is used before the first adjective only. If different adjectives refer to different pounds, we must add an article before each adjective.

  • Sumit has a black and white cat. (Sumit has a cat which is black and white in colour.)
  • Sumit has a black and a white cat. (Sumit has two cats, one is black and the other is white.)

Read the passage given below, and identify and underline the articles used in it.

One day, a dog which was very hungry was crossing the street. Suddenly he saw a shop selling meat. Since the dog hadn’t eaten for a few days, he could not control his hunger. When the shopkeeper wasn’t looking, the dog took a piece of meat and ran away. The dog ran till it came near a clear stream to enjoy his food. As he was about to eat the meat, he saw his own reflection in the water. He didn’t understand that it was his own reflection in the clear water; he thought there was another dog with a piece of meat. So without thinking twice, he opened his mouth to bark at the other dog; as soon as he did that, his piece of meat fell into the stream.

i think 10th question is incorrect please check it out well thanks for this worksheet

The general rule is that we use any in questions and negative sentences and some in affirmative sentences. Some is also possible here but the meaning changes.

Compare: I couldn’t answer any of the questions. (= I answered no question; I will get zero marks.) I couldn’t answer some of the questions. (= I did answer some questions, but I couldn’t answer the others; I will not get full marks but I may pass the test.)
