This is one of the reasons why the usage of audio-visual aids in teaching and learning has grown over time. Students can now share knowledge with others much more quickly and with instant access. Additionally, learners can now comprehend ideas and concepts more quickly and better. There are numerous different audio-visual aids accessible in the modern world such as videos, music clips, flip charts, slideshow presentations, and overhead transparencies there resources have proven essential in schools across all learning environments, from early childhood education to adult education. With the use of these resources, children have been able to concentrate more readily and acquire and remember more knowledge. As audiovisual technology has become more widely used, communication has changed and teachers can use these advances in the classroom to enhance teacher-student collaboration.

Teaching aids, according to Sunder (2010 ), improve teaching ability, draw in and hold learners’ interest, and make the teaching-learning process more participatory and knowledge-centered. In order to make the teaching-learning process result-oriented, simple, efficient, and interesting for both teachers and students, there is a clear need for and importance of teaching aids.  When it comes to teaching a new or abstract idea that could be challenging to understand or comprehend, audio-visual aids are essential. Teachers can show concepts to students using audiovisual aids in cases when they might otherwise be difficult to explain. I am a science teacher and I remember when I was teaching in a school in India most of the students faced difficulty to learn difficult topics such as photosynthesis, the naming of a chemical compound, and mole concepts. At that time, I usually used audio-visual aids so that students can understand the concepts easily.

Flannel graph holds the attention of the audience. It is ideal for exhibiting dramatic story telling. It can be easily maintained and carried to remote areas. DISADVANTAGES: Can be used for a small group. It requires considerable advance preparation. May create confusion if sequences of picture is changed. Efficient use of flannel graphs requires much practice.

The audio-visual types of equipment and materials can be classified in several ways according to different approaches. Most of the visual aids can be grouped into the following categories:

  • Projected Aids and
  • Non-Projected Aids

Projected Aids with examples:

Projected aids are those that require audio-visual equipment to be presented properly. Some of the aids included in this category are slides, filmstrips, overhead projectors and motion pictures.

  • Projectors: Projectors are those types of equipment which are used for being visualized by the learners to gain useful learning experiences.
  • Filmstrips: A filmstrip is a series of related still photographs on a single roll of processed film. They may be produced in black and white or coloured and are sometimes accompanied by sound recordings which carry narration, music and sound effects.
  • Motion Pictures or Film: Recently motion pictures have received extensive use in training and information programmes. A film is a multiple method of communication, it realistically presents facts, arouses emotions and transmits attitudes. It is mostly used as a storyteller. The main aim of educational films is to evaluate and educate them according to patterns and principles set by society.
  • Overhead Projectors: It contains an area of vertical projection beside the straight horizontal path of the light available with the usual projectors. It also contains a large aperture of size. It provides for the focusing of the image on the screen by vertical movements of the projection head.
  • Slides: are very popular in teaching, they are inexpensive and can be quite easily constructed and stored, and may be used countless times.

Non-Projected Aids with examples:

Non-Projected aids are those aids that don’t require the use of audiovisual equipment such as a projector, filmstrips, and screen.

  • Graphics: Graphic aid material represents a particular type of visual aid material that involves the use of graphic presentation in the form of graphs, maps, charts, diagrams, posters and cartoons etc. It is a sort of visual art that carries a symbolic abstract and generalized representation of reality, there are some important graphic aids given below.
  • 3-D Aids: Three-dimensional aids are powerful interest arousing devices that possesses the capacity of bringing into play all the five senses. Few such three-dimensional aids are named under:
  • Display Boards: as the name says all the types of boards that can be used for displaying graphics and material like pictures, charts, diagrams, and cartoons, besides all types of written, typed and printed material that can be used for the visual communication of ideas and experiences.
  • Blackboard or Chalk board
  • Bulletin board
  • Flannel board
  • Audio Aids: The aids which use the sense of hearing are called audio aids. Radio, audio tape or tape recorder players are generally included in this category.

Audiovisual Aids

Audiovisual aids play an important role in health education. They can be classified into three groups – purely auditory aids, purely visual and a combination of both auditory and visual aids

Media or materials in health education can be used for different purposes and for different groups of people. Learning and understanding seems to result when more senses, such as touch, sight and hearing are reached by the media.

If used properly they create interest and motivate people to learn. Learning is made more permanent because these aids supply a concrete basis for learning rather than abstract thinking.

Types of Audio – Visual Aids:

No health education can be effective without audio – visual aids. Audio-visual aids can be classified into 3 groups – (1) purely auditory; (2) Purely visual; (3) combined audio-visual.

·            A Knowledge of the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of each audio-visual and is necessary in order to take proper use of them. Audio-visual aids are means to an end; not an end in themselves.

Audio Visual Aids (Used in Mass Media:)

1.         Posters: Posters are intended to attract public attention. Therefore, the material needs artistic preparation. The message on the poster should be short, simple, direct and one that can be taken at a glance and easy to understand. The life of a poster is usually short and needs frequent replacement. As a medium of health. Education, posters are not effective in changing human behavior.

Posters should be colourful to catch the eye and convey the message clearly, Simple language and short sentences should be used. If used in the clinic, Outpatients department or health centers, they should be changed frequently. When possible explain the message to the learners and use them to supplement the teaching

2.         Health Magazines: A good health magazine can be an important channel of communication. The material needs expert presentation.

The Swasth Hind from Delhi and World Health from WHO are important health magazines. The health magazines stimulate awareness among people.

3.         Press: Newspapers are the most widely distributed of all forms of reading material. They are an important channel of communication to the people.

4.         Films: Films are very expensive to produce, and they get out-of-date very quickly. But film-shows attract large gathering.

5.         Radio and TV: These are found nearly in every home. They are potent instruments of education. Radio talks should not exceed 15 minutes.

6.         Health Exhibitions : If properly organized, health exhibitions can attract large numbers of people. Health exhibitions are used in connection with key points of interest – e.g., fairs and festivals, mass campaigns, etc.

7.         Health Museums : A good health museum can be a very effective mass media of education, such as the one at Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh.

8.         Indigenous Media : Indigenous Media like katha-vartha, prabhat pheries, songs and dramas have roots in our culture. Health messages can be carried through these media.

Selection and uses of Audiovisual Aids

The following criteria are guides for the selection of the books and other printed teaching materials. How each applies in a given instance depends upon the teaching objectives, which have been set up to meet particular needs.

1.         The facts should be scientifically accurate

2.         Needed materials should be present

3.         All the information should be pertinent

4.         It should cover the entire requirements

5.         All the ideas should be essential, significant and important to clear understanding.

2024 Gen Z and Millennial Survey: Living and working with purpose in a transforming world

The 13th edition of Deloitte’s Gen Z and Millennial Survey connected with nearly 23,000 respondents across 44 countries to track their experiences and expectations at work and in the world more broadly.

Gen Zs and millennials are cautiously optimistic about the economy and their personal finances, but uncertainty remains

Just under a third of Gen Zs and millennials believe the economic situation in their countries will improve over the next year, reflecting the most optimism respondents have shown about the economy since our 2020 study fielded just before the COVID-19 pandemic. This optimism is also reflected in Gen Zs’ and millennials’ outlook for their personal financial situations, although financial insecurity continues to plague these generations.

Three in 10 say they do not feel financially secure. And roughly six in 10 live paycheck to paycheck. The cost of living remains their top concern by a wide margin compared to their other leading concerns, which include climate change, unemployment, mental health, and crime/personal safety.

There is some uncertainty about the social and political outlook, with only about a quarter of respondents believing it will improve in their country over the next year.

Gen Zs and millennials think the following will improve in their countries in the year ahead

Nearly all gen zs and millennials want purpose-driven work, and they are not afraid to turn down work that doesn’t align with their values.

Having a sense of purpose is key to workplace satisfaction and well-being. And increasingly, these generations are willing to turn down assignments and employers based on their personal ethics or beliefs. Reasons for rejecting an employer or an assignment include factors such as having a negative environmental impact, or contributing to inequality through non inclusive practices, and more personal factors such as a lack of support for employees’ mental well-being and work/life balance.

Climate action, environmental sustainability is everyone’s responsibility.

Environmental sustainability continues to be among Gen Zs’ and millennials’ top priorities. It is a personal concern that consistently weighs heavily on them, with roughly six in 10 Gen Zs and millennials saying they have felt worried or anxious about climate change in the last month.

The majority of them take action to minimize their impact on the environment. They feel governments should play a bigger role in pushing business to address climate change. And that business, in turn, could and should do more to enable consumers to make more sustainable purchasing decisions.

Protecting the environment is the societal challenge where respondents feel businesses have the most opportunity to drive change. Gen Zs and millennials are pushing business to act through their career decisions and consumer behaviors.

Genai at work, positive perceptions of genai increase with more hands-on experience, but so do workplace concerns.

Among both generations, frequent users of GenAI are more likely to believe the technology will have positive effects on their work and improve their work/life balance.

But, conversely, the more a respondent uses GenAI, the more likely they are to have some concerns as well, such as believing that GenAI will cause the elimination of jobs, make it harder for younger generations to enter the workforce, or that they’ll have to find job opportunities that are less vulnerable to automation.

In response to these types of concerns, both generations are thinking about how to adapt, with a focus on reskilling and GenAI training.

Future of work, gen zs’ and millennials’ career and workplace expectations are evolving.

Many Gen Zs and millennials are choosing career paths based on environmental concerns, or which they believe will be less vulnerable to automation. And, once they do choose an employer, they push for change, particularly when it comes to workload, the services offered to clients, learning and development, DEI, wellness, social impact, and environmental efforts.

Work remains key to Gen Zs’ and, even more so to millennials’, sense of identity, with their jobs coming second only to friends and family. However, they are very focused on maintaining a positive work/life balance. And their strong preference for flexible work is driving greater demand for part-time jobs, job-sharing options, and models such as four-day work weeks for full-time employees.

Meanwhile, roughly a third of Gen Zs and millennials say they work for organizations who have recently implemented a return-to-office policy. These policies have yielded mixed results.

  • Six in 10 Gen Zs (61%) and millennials (58%) believe they have the power to drive change within their organizations.
  • Consistent with last year’s findings, work/life balance is the top consideration when Gen Zs and millennials are choosing an employer.
  • Two-thirds of Gen Zs (64%) and millennials (66%) say they work for organizations who have recently implemented a return-to-office policy.

Mental health

As workplace factors contribute to stress levels, employers must stay focused on providing better workplace mental health.

Only about half of Gen Zs (51%) and millennials (56%) rate their mental health as good or extremely good. And while stress levels have improved slightly since last year, they remain high, with 40% of Gen Zs and 35% of millennials saying they feel stressed all or most of the time.

About a third of respondents say that their job and their work/life balance contribute a lot to their stress levels.

Financial concerns, and family welfare are major stressors, alongside job related factors such as long working hours and lack of recognition.

Many respondents believe that their employers are taking mental health seriously. But despite some positive changes, there is room for improvement when it comes to enabling people to feel comfortable speaking openly about mental health at work. Managers and senior leaders need to play an important role to remove stigma.
