‘Radical’ plan to ban controversial Australian industry by 2028

Surprise plan Aussies have for tax cut cash

The controversial live sheep export trade will be banned by the Australian Government from May 1, 2028 but farmers groups and political opponents have hit out at the plan labelling it as “radical” and vowing to undo the move.

The Albanese government announced on Saturday it was funding a $107 million package over four years to help farmers transition out of the industry after it pledged to end the practice amid animal welfare concerns.

Agriculture Minister Murray Watt announced the live sheep export trade by sea would end after releasing a report that made 28 recommendations about how to wind down the system.

“We are giving certainty to sheep producers and the supply chain by legislating the date, and putting $107 million on the table to enable an orderly and well-planned transition away from the trade,” Senator Watt said in Perth.

“This is a comprehensive package that will assist to strengthen supply chains, develop market opportunities and improve animal welfare. With the Australian sheepmeat sector booming, our sheep industry has a bright future. This support will help it continue to grow, creating more local jobs through increased value adding.”

‘An insult’

Yet farm groups have opposed phasing out the practice arguing that it would put people out of work and destroy farming communities – pledging to campaign against the ban – particularly in Western Australia where the sector creates thousands of jobs.

Legislation to bring into force the ban would be introduced in federal parliament’s current term, according to Senator Watt.

But Nationals leader David Littleproud said a future Coalition Government would maintain the live sheep trade if it wins the next federal election.

“Minister Watt didn’t even have the courage to fly to Western Australia and face farmers, instead announcing from a high-rise in Perth, it’s just a big ‘up yours’ to Western Australian farmers,” Mr Littleproud said.

Farmers, truck drivers, shearers and other workers along the supply chain in the live sheep export trade would share a $64.6 million package to diversify into new areas, with the government encouraging an expansion of the chilled meat sector.

But Mr Littleproud labelled the package as an “insult”.

“Industry has never had the science explained to them why they are closing the industry down,” he said.

“Compensation of just $64.6 million is an insult, especially when Meat and Livestock Australia figures show live sheep exports were 84,430 in December 2023, which was a 177 per cent increase in comparison with November export (58,732) and a 44 per cent increase on December 2022 exports (30,531).”

Mr Littleproud said Western Australian farmers didn’t want compensation, in an industry which created 3000 jobs in Western Australia.

‘Punch in the guts’

Warranine park farmer Ellen Walker from Brookton, WA was “devastated” by the decision.

“This announcement is like having a punch in the guts when you are already down,” she said.

“We are coming off the back of an extremely dry summer with very poor sheep prices. We have had to carry extra stock because if they are slaughter quality, the supply chain is full, and if they are store quality, there is no confidence or feed for feed-lotters to want to purchase.”

Ms Walker said she currently has over 200 sheep that she is going to have to destroy because there is nowhere for them to go.

“It is uneconomical to keep them and I need what little grass that’s growing for my ewes that are due to start lambing in the next couple of weeks. And all of this is with the boats still operating,” she said.

“We were trying to be optimistic that getting rid of the glut of sheep over the winter and a good season would see prices improve by the spring and our industry head back to being a profitable business option, this decision will put us back at square one.

“We will seriously be considering what our sheep enterprise is going to look like, which is very disheartening as we love our sheep and would love them to stay, as a key part of our business.”

Animal welfare issues

The live sheep export industry was hit by controversy in 2018 when sickening footage revealed thousands of sheep had died aboard livestock vessels due to overcrowding and excessive heat.

But Mr Littleproud claimed the ban will see the needless death of thousands of sheep from around the world, as countries that take up this market from Australia do not meet world leading animal welfare standards.

“The legislation will be introduced in this term of parliament, even though the industry embraced world leading animal welfare reforms in 2019, not only in transport but also the processing of sheep in the Middle East,” he added.

However, undercover footage aired on the ABC’s 7.30 Report last year in Oman in the Middle East showed Australian sheep with their legs bound together, being dragged by the leg or head, and being slaughtered at unapproved locations in violation of Australian regulations.

The RSPCA strongly welcomed the move and said it hailed the beginning of a better future for Australian sheep.

“A swift and orderly phase out of live sheep export, with appropriate measures to safeguard animal welfare in the meantime, is the right decision for Australian sheep and Australian farmers,” said RSPCA Australia CEO Richard Mussell.

“We congratulate the Government for listening to the science and the Australian community and for outlining a clear plan for phasing out this cruel and unfixable industry – including funding a transition package in the upcoming Budget.

“There has been an extensive consultation process involving every part of the live sheep export supply chain. Now, we have a clear way forward.”

‘Catastrophe’

But the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) has also slammed the decision, describing the four year timeline to phase out live sheep exports as “radical” and said it had left farmers “shocked”.

It claimed it ignored industry advice that such a rapid timeline would spell “catastrophe” for farming communities, animal welfare and Australia’s global trading partnerships, the NFF added.

NFF CEO Tony Mahar said it was “devastating slap in the face” and described the announcement as a “bombshell".

“Murray Watt has decided to book us on the express train to disaster, but this isn’t the final chapter in this story. We’ll keep fighting,” NFF CEO Tony Mahar said.

“$20 million a year is pitiful It’s cents in the dollar compared to what farmers have invested in their businesses, and it doesn’t touch the sides of an industry that will add billions to our economy in the coming years.”

National Farmers’ Federation CEO Tony Mahar. Picture: News Regional Media

Most of the live sheep exported from Australia are sent to the Middle East, with the country calling on the government to rethink the ban.

Mr Mahar said the move was into just a betrayal of Australian farmers.

“It runs directly counter to our national interests. We’re turning our back on crucial Middle Eastern partners who have plead for this trade to continue,” he added.

“It also shows complete ignorance to the real-world implications of a ban, which will inevitably lead to poorer animal welfare outcomes.

“This doesn’t end the global demand for live sheep. Today’s announcement just sentences foreign sheep to the practices we banned a decade ago.”

‘Unjustifiable’

The government package to help the industry will also include $27.7 million to aid market opportunities in Australia and overseas, particularly focusing on increasing mutton sales.

Transition support is focused on helping affected individuals, businesses and communities to plan for, respond and adjust to the phase out, Senator Watt noted.

“Importantly, it will be available to help all parts of the sheep industry supply chain, from farmers, to truckies, to shearers and processors,” he said.

“We are putting support on the table now so that people can start planning and acting now.

“We want to ensure those affected by the phase are well-positioned, resilient and ready when the trade ends in 2028.”

Mr Mussell said the government package provided practical and tangible measures to support farmers to transition away from this trade.

“The RSPCA supports these initiatives, such as measures to expand processing capacity here in Australia,” he said.

The live sheep export is “unsustainable, unjustifiable, and completely unnecessary” in modern Australia, he added.

“We have already seen a significant expansion of the boxed and chilled meat industry in Australia and this package includes a focus on continuing that expansion, ”he said.

“The future of the sheep industry in Australia is a more modern and sustainable one.”

Australian federal budget 2024: what we know so far and what to expect

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has promised more cost-of-living relief in his 14 May budget as well as spending for students and health

  • Get our morning and afternoon news emails , free app or daily news podcast

On 14 May the treasurer, Jim Chalmers, will deliver his second full-year budget.

Chalmers has promised more cost-of-living relief in a budget that he says tackles inflation but sets Australia’s economy up for growth – neither scorched-earth nor a free-for-all of spending .

A second surplus is within reach, but that’s just speculation. Here’s what we know already about what is in the budget.

Tax cuts and cost of living

The biggest element of the cost-of-living relief in the budget is the changes to stage-three tax cuts, a $359bn 10-year tax cut package announced by Labor in January and legislated in February with opposition support.

The package means all Australian taxpayers (earning over the tax-free threshold of $18,200) get a tax cut, doubling the benefit for an average income earner compared with the Coalition’s original stage three proposal.

Labor says 84% of taxpayers are better off under its proposal, although those earning more than $146,486 would have received more under the Coalition’s model.

There will be other cost-of-living measures the government claims won’t add to inflation, which might point towards extending energy price relief .

Jim Chalmers has poured cold water on the Economic Inclusion Advisory Committee’s call for jobseeker to rise to 90% of the age pension, although he and the finance minister, Katy Gallagher, have seemed more open on increasing rent assistance. Chalmers has confirmed there will be “additional steps” on poverty reduction and “new initiatives for housing”.

Education, skills and Hecs

The government will wipe $3bn from student debts by indexing Hecs and Help debts to the lower of the consumer price index or the wage price index, backdated to June 2023.

The government will also pay student teachers, nurses, midwives and social workers $320 a week during their mandatory work placements , starting from July 2025. These two measures are aspects of the government’s response to the Universities Accord, but there will be more in the budget.

The government has announced $90.6m to boost the number of skilled workers in the construction and housing sector, creating 15,000 fee-free Tafe places and 5,000 places for pre-apprenticeships.

School funding will also rise as the federal government negotiates with the states to cover the 5% funding gap, most recently offering to lift its share of funding from 20% to 22.5%. This is estimated to cost $6bn over five years, although Chalmers has been coy about whether estimates will be reflected in the budget or only be added after education and health agreements are finalised.

There is no question childcare workers will be receiving a pay rise in this budget – the only questions are how much and how it will be distributed. With the industry in crisis due to staffing shortages, which have been exacerbated by staff leaving to work in aged care after that sector’s pay rise win , the government is expected to make wage increases for childcare workers a centre piece of the budget.

But it’s unclear whether the government will pull the trigger on scrapping the activity test, which sets a subsidy rate based on employment. It has indicated it wants to get rid of the measure as part of its plan to make childcare in Australia “universal”, though it’s not clear whether it will happen in this budget.

Health and aged care

Public hospitals are expected to get more funding, as the federal government works to finalise a new five-year agreement with the states to start in mid-2025. The commonwealth has reportedly offered to lift funding by an extra $4bn in 2025-26 and $13bn over the whole five years.

The government is also increasing funding for its medical research future fund over 13 years, with $1.1bn for existing projects plus $150m million to investigate rarely survived cancers, and $150m towards reducing inequalities in the health system. A further $500m will go to other research schemes.

The government is also yet to outline its response to March’s aged care taskforce report , which suggested new ways to pay for the system – including asking Australians with more wealth to pay more for the cost of their care.

The health minister, Mark Butler, also announced $49.1m would go toward offering longer consultations of 45 minutes or longer for endometriosis sufferers.

Among a total of $15.4bn in “unavoidable spending” to continue programs from the previous government is money set aside for palliative care, cancer supports, public health chronic conditions, and alcohol and other drug treatments.

Defence and foreign affairs

The budget will confirm that Australia’s defence spending will increase from 2.1% of Australia’s economic output next financial year to 2.4% by 2033-34, driven by a range of big-spending projects including the Aukus nuclear-powered submarines.

There will be some cuts to programs, however, with the government announcing last month that it would free up about $73bn over 10 years by cutting, delaying or changing the scope of some defence projects.

Even after these cuts are taken into account, the government says it has committed a net increase of $50.3bn for defence over the next 10 years. This includes a net increase of $5.7bn over the immediate four-year budget cycle.

This immediate funding includes $1bn over the next four years for long-range strike, targeting and autonomous systems.

In foreign affairs, the government has promised $492m for the Asian Development Fund’s 2025-28 pledging round, to “help respond to the needs of the region and deliver transformative development projects across the Indo-Pacific”.

Infrastructure

So far, western Sydney is the biggest winner in infrastructure after the minister, Catherine King, announced $1.9bn in funding for 14 road and transport projects. Those include road upgrades, planning projects and extra money for a business case to extend the train line into the city’s south-west.

Cyclists will also get a boost with $100m being set aside to build and upgrade bicycle and walking lines in cities and regional centres.

Canberra will also get a $50m injection to extend its light rail line from the northern suburbs past Parliament House and into the city’s south.

The nation’s capital are getting a good deal because $249.7m has also been announced for Australian Institute of Sport as the 2032 Brisbane Olympics inches closer.

The quarter of a billion-dollar sum will go towards refreshing the ageing site with new accommodation, an all-weather sports dome and a new training centre.

Beyond Canberra, road safety data from the states and territories will also be better harmonised with a $21m funding announcement to set up a national data hub.

Future Made in Australia

The government has announced funding for a range of projects under its Future Made in Australia policy, which aims to directly support Australian industry and innovation, particularly in green energy. These commitments include:

$1bn for the Solar Sunshot production of solar panels in the Hunter

$1bn to PsiQuantum to build the world’s first fault tolerant quantum computer in Brisbane

$840m for Arafura’s rare earth metals production in the Northern Territory

An export agreement to sell armoured vehicles made by the German defence manufacturer Rheinmetall

$566m over 10 years for GeoScience Australia to map what is under Australia’s soil and seabed

$400m in new loans to Alpha HPA for Australia’s first high-purity alumina processing facility in Queensland; and

$185m to Renascor Resources to fast-track the development of stage one of its Siviour Graphite Project in South Australia; and

$100m to speed up environmental approvals, including assistance for business.

Gender equality

The government has committed $925m for the leaving violence payment, a payment of $5,000 to help meet the costs of leaving a relationship. The existing trial will be extended and the new permanent program available from mid-2025.

The government has also said that parents will receive 12% superannuation – or about $106 a week – on their publicly funded paid parental leave from July 2025, full costings for which will be in the budget.

Indigenous affairs

The government has not foreshadowed any new major spending commitments in the Indigenous affairs space, but the budget will contain details and funding for several large programs in that portfolio that were recently unveiled.

The Closing The Gap commitments from February, including a $700m remote jobs program, and March’s announcement of a $4bn remote housing program for the Northern Territory, are expected to be the major components of the Indigenous affairs portfolio. Most of the new commitments in Indigenous affairs are typically contained in February’s Closing The Gap document rather than the May budget.

Attorney General’s Department

The government has pledged $161.3m to establish the national firearms register , and $11m for an app alerting Australians in real time if somebody tries to use their data to commit fraud.

The government will invest $166.4m to implement reforms to Australia’s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regime.

After Netflix Announced It's Discontinuing Its Basic Plan, The Fan Response Has Been Absolutely Livid

Not the kinds of reactions one hopes for.

While Netflix may be the biggest streaming entertainment platform around the world outside of YouTube’s dominance, that doesn’t exactly make it the best streaming service out there . And a certain group of customers with Netflix subscriptions have a new reason to complain after the company revealed it will be excising its standard Basic tier from in the very near future for more countries around the world. And as one might imagine, the subscribers in those countries aren’t exactly pumped to learn they’ll need to pay more to get everything coming to Netflix in 2024 .

Netflix sent out notification emails in the final days of April 2024 to international customers located in the UK and Canada, alerting them to the news that the Basic subscription plan will be removed as a pricing option starting on June 4. Anyone who hasn’t canceled their account by that time will automatically be slotted into the Standard with Ads tier, and will be charged as such on the next billing cycle. It’s not the first time Netflix went public with those plans, which were first announced in Summer 2023, but that doesn’t exactly lessen the blow for customers like these.

Netflix Customers Vowing To Cancel Plans

As it often goes with impulse responses to corporations changing things, quite a few people were quick to call Netflix out by saying they won't be sticking with the service after the plan tiers change.

@Netflix_CA Just got your notice that the basic plan will no longer be available. Bye bye. pic.twitter.com/CfaJDk9g7A April 29, 2024

The user below took to X to point out the quasi-irony of Netflix's message claiming to value customers in the same breath as announcing the removal of the Basic plan.

Netflix is so glad to have me as a member that they’re cancelling my basic plan and upping the cost to $16.99 if I want to continue. Yeah, not happening. @browland1

While many are raging out just based on pure principles, the math involved with the plan alteration has also caused confusion, and the X user below would clearly rather just get rid of Netflix than try to figure out its formulas.

@Netflix How can I put this simply?Oh yeah: Fuck you for pretending like you're "saving" me 35% by eliminating the basic plan and forcing me to either watch adverts or pay 2x as much. I'll just unsubscribe, thanks. @squall_loire

While the messages above serve as a decent indication for how many people responded, angry-quitting wasn't the only way to go about it.

Customers Called Netflix Out For Thievery

Not everybody who slammed Netflix for the Basic plan decision was so open about their own subscription goals for the future. Several customers took aim at the company's tactics for being greed-fueled and motivated only by money.

CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER

Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News

  • Your Basic plan is being discontinued, and your new £4.99 Standard with adverts plan automatically begins 1 June.’I’m sorry @netflix ??? I don’t want adverts!!! And £10.99 for none is daylight robbery! - @darryllbryant
  • Netflix getting rid of their basic plan and only giving you the option of cheaper but with adverts or £10.99 a month without is honestly daylight robbery - @hollydotray
  • not netflix discontinuing my basic plan. so it’s either i pay 4.99 for ads or they swindle 10.99 from me for a standard plan LOL fucking thieves - @toni_aa

Despite years of saying the service would avoid all forms of advertising, Netflix execs went back on those words by introducing its ad-based tier in 2022 . And its popularity is apparently such that the head honchos are presumably okay with all the threats and negative backlash without worrying about a dire drop in income. After all, the company removed the Basic plan in the U.S. in 2023, and while there was a possible dip in subscriber growth around the time, it doesn't seem to have made a long term dent.

Some Netflix Customers Don't Understand The Decision

While one might assume that every response to the news was purely vitriolic, some customers were more about questioning the logic and intentions behind the decision. Albeit with at least a little bit of anger threaded into it.

  • Netflix just sent me a notice to change streaming plans. If I go with the Standard with Ads it provides better features for 40% less than Basic which they are canning. Standard is outrageous. Premium is laughable. They want us on ads. Everything is becoming cable TV. - @PaulChato
  • Why is Netflix taking away the basic plan… but keeping the standard with ads? The $4 difference wasn’t enough to cover the ads these ppl making these decisions don’t have sense at all - @_misszee
  • @Netflix_CA with the discontinued basic plan, the price is a 65% increase if I don't want ads... for essentially the same thing. I hope you lose a lot of subscribers over this. - @bc_bro

It remains to be seen whether or not this move will have a major impact on Netflix's overall subscriber base. And it may never actually be seen, since the company announced that it would not be openly reporting on its customer numbers going forward. Was that report tied to any expectations of a subscription drop after this tier removal? It's impossible to know, but wouldn't be the wildest thing in the world.

Until Netflix goes forward with its plan to eliminate the Basic tier in the UK and Canada on June 4, there are plenty of shows to binge in the meantime, such as Baby Reindeer , which even Stephen King has been obsessed with .

Business Plan Analysis for Modern Agriculture Communities (MACs)

Announcement Description

1 . Background

1 .1 CAPRED

The CAPRED is Australia’s flagship bilateral economic development facility in Cambodia. The Facility supports Cambodia in implementing various economic interventions and reforms to maintain the country’s economic transition. These interventions and reforms encourage more productive and inclusive public and private investment, promoting a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable economy (RISE).

1 . 2 Modern Agriculture Communities (MACs)

In Cambodia, smallholder farmers dominate the agricultural landscape, facing challenges such as limited access to technology, financial services, market information, infrastructure support, and the impact of climate change. To mitigate these constraints and improve smallholder income, approximately 1,200 agricultural cooperatives have been established, comprising 170,000 members, with women making up 63% of this total. These cooperatives represent a collective effort to address the problems smallholder farmers face by pooling resources, knowledge, and market access, accounting for 5.9% of the nation's farmers. As reported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) in 2022, the effectiveness of these cooperatives has been limited, with only 17.5% of them performing well. Agricultural cooperatives (ACs) face the following challenges:

  • Lack of professional leadership and agronomical knowledge
  • Lack of capital investment and operational finance
  • High production cost (low competitiveness) and international market mismatch.
  • Low trust in AC management.
  • Vulnerability to climate change.

In response, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) plans to establish Modern Agriculture Communities (MACs) to transition from traditional family-based farming to more organised and economically robust agricultural enterprises in Cambodia.

  • Category: Consultancy, Agriculture

The business plan will focus on straightforward and achievable activities for the farmer groups, ensuring they are not overwhelmed by complexity as they grow.

Bidder Eligibility

CAPRED reserves the right to vary the contract terms, and to exercise the option period at its sole discretion.

Israeli war cabinet green-lights military push into rafah over biden’s objections: report.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Israel’s war cabinet has approved expanding its Hamas battle plan to include Rafah, a move that could soon see Israel Defense Forces enter the densely populated city, which the Jewish state claims is the last bastion for the terrorists.

The decision came fewer than 48 hours after President Biden — dismayed by the rising civilian death toll in Gaza — told CNN that the US would withhold munitions shipments from Israel if it invaded Rafah.

Two sources with knowledge of the details claim Israel’s adapted war plan constitutes a “measured expansion” that won’t encroach on Biden’s “red line” on Rafah, Axios reported .

But a third source told the outlet that the approved expansion plan could potentially be viewed by the US as crossing it.

A majority of the war cabinet also reportedly told Israeli negotiators working on hammering out a hostage exchange and ceasefire deal with Hamas to continue their efforts despite the “expansion of the area of operation” approved Thursday night.

Hawkish cabinet ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, who have urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to invade Rafah, voted to suspend negotiations, the outlet said.

Hamas envoys and Israeli leaders met in Cairo on Sunday for another attempt at reaching an agreement, reportedly engaging in “in-depth and serious discussions” on a deal that would see a number of hostages released in return for a 40-day ceasefire,  according to the Guardian .

But negotiations broke down when the sides couldn’t agree on terms, including Hamas’ insistence it would reject any agreement that doesn’t involve a permanent end to hostilities, a position Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said presented “worrying signs that Hamas does not intend to reach an agreement with us.”

Both sides withdrew from the negotiations without scheduling another round of talks.

Israeli tanks seized control of the Rafah Crossing — or the supply route between Gaza and Egypt — on Tuesday, with armored vehicles and troops engaging in skirmishes with Hamas terrorists as thousands of Palestinians attempted to flee the city, which is believed to house more than 1 million refugees.

The White House did not respond to a Post request for comment Friday afternoon.

Netflix and Prime asteroids colliding with a city

If the 2023 upfronts were about disruption, the 2024 upfronts are about Disruption with a capital “D.”

Last year’s events were quite literally disrupted, with striking WGA writers on picket lines outside the New York City venues and the annual presentations to advertisers blunted by a noted lack of star power, as actors proved unwilling to cross those picket lines. While companies like Disney and NBCUniversal tried to make up for it by leaning on their news and sports talent, it was nonetheless a muted week.

'cheers,' espn hobey baker podcasts among titles announced at iab upfront, nbc gets back to business as usual with fall 2024 schedule.

In other words, linear TV is on the ropes at a time when legacy media needs it most to get over that streaming chasm. “We’re not kidding ourselves thinking this is going to be some gangbusters upfront. It’s going to be challenging again,” one ad sales chief with exposure to linear TV tells The Hollywood Reporter . Another TV ad sales chief adds that they were focused on “flexibility” and “transparency” with ad partners, basically asking them what they wanted and figuring out a way to deliver.

But some analysts have been even more bearish. “Decades from now, media executives and investors will likely look back at 2023 as the year where linear TV advertising officially broke,” MoffettNathanson analyst Michael Nathanson wrote March 19. “It is now clear that outside of sports advertising there should no longer be expectations of a recovery for linear TV advertising.”

Indeed, multiple top ad sales executives say that sports will be one of the top selling points during an otherwise challenging year, with athletes and studio hosts expected on stage at multiple presentations.

Indeed, the decline in entertainment programming is the hole in linear TV’s sinking ship. “I don’t think the networks are making as much of an effort and putting quality content on these linear channels, as they had say 5-10 years ago,” says media consultant Brad Adgate. “If they didn’t have this legacy of decades behind them as an advertising platform — if this was something brand new — I think they would get very little advertiser support. It’s called legacy media for a reason.”

“We’ve seen it in the Nielsen ratings, but it’s not unexpected,” the buy-side source adds. “It’s been going on for years now, and there aren’t any media companies that are trying to change that trend. They’re not investing in traditional primetime entertainment.”

Streaming, however, is. But while the traditional entertainment companies lose collective billions on their direct-to-consumer platforms, the tech giants and the only truly profitable streaming platform — Netflix — are coming for their lunch.

“It’s not surprising to me that they’re doing this, I mean, look, they’re sitting there and they’re seeing $20 billion being transacted and they have better content and a better story to tell in often cases to the advertising community,” Adgate says. “Why shouldn’t you be there?”

And for the first time, Amazon is pushing into upfront week, hoping to leverage the Prime Video audience (now ad-supported) to steal market share from linear.

And then there’s YouTube. The video platform is already a behemoth (it had more than $31 billion in advertising revenue last year), but it wants a bigger piece of the upfront pie. It has secured the closing night spot during upfront week, where executives will gladly tout its reach on living room TV sets by noting it has more viewing time than Netflix. Multiple media buyers quizzed by THR after last year’s strike-impacted upfronts cited YouTube as having the most successful presentation, in which it leaned on its top creators and a surprise appearance from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Or, as a top television executive worries: “There’s too much supply and not enough demand.”

And on the horizon, deeper concerns persist.

As scary as the ad market is now, it could always get worse. Further war in the Middle East or Europe? Disruptions during the 2024 election? More surprise interest rate hikes? Any of those things could cause further advertiser pullback, given their propensity for caution.

“I never thought I’d be in a job where I was so connected to Jerome Powell,” quips the buy-side executive.
