If you're struggling to get yourself off the couch and onto the mat, Olaosebikan also has workout videos dedicated to fitness motivation.

Jessica Smith

Jessica Smith 's channel makes the cut for the best YouTube workout accounts for her approach to fitness alone. Find anything from yoga videos to strength training workouts to do at home on her channel.

Stretch out all the kinks from some of the other best YouTube workout videos using the zen videos from apparel brand alo Yoga . Don't worry: They're not trying to sell you on anything during their functional flow or the seven days of gratitude — except for, you know, flexibility and inner peace.

Want some recs? If you're short on time, go for the 13-minute quickie exercise video — and if you want to build strength and flexibility, try this 38-minute routine .

BodyFit by Amy

Amy Kiser Schemper, a Los Angeles–based NASM-certified trainer, proves in her BodyFit by Amy videos that super-effective workouts don't need to suck up hours of your day. Take this 30-minute Tabata video , for example: After a warm-up, you'll work through high-energy circuits that will make you start sweating fast . Her best YouTube workout videos run the fitness gamut from 10–45 minutes and from total-body routines to workouts targeting specific areas such as the abs or obliques. She even has a series of BabyFit videos for new moms.

(FYI, she's a certified personal training specialist from Canadian Fitness Professionls.) Cue up any of her hundreds of interval-based exercise videos using various types of equipment or bodyweight and follow along as she does the moves with you. Scroll through to find no-jump and low-impact options, apartment-friendly workouts, and no-repeat workouts for when you need to be distracted with new moves for the entirety of the session.

The best part? Since she's not verbally instructing, you get to jam to her music during the workout or could totally turn on your own. (Just watch for the on-screen timer so you know when to switch moves!) If you're looking for a more structured plan, she's got you covered as well; Robertson offers a free 12-week workout plan (among others) you can follow along with to reach your goals.

Sydney Cummings

NASM-certified trainer Sydney Cummings is a fan favorite for a reason: the certified personal trainer drops a new, free workout video every day. And by doing so, Cummings keeps her followers engaged and excited to hit the gym — or the living room — for a killer routine. Not feeling the workout video of the day? No worries; you can choose your own adventure from her archives, be it a 15-minute butt builder routine or a 40-minute arms and abs workout. Hailing from the United Arab Emirates, Mr. and Mrs. Muscle are dedicated to delivering fast and effective HIIT workouts that can be done with just bodyweight or minimal equipment — plus, they're both Advantage IQ level 3 certified personal trainers. You can mix and match workout videos, opting for a quick 10-minute cardio routine one day and then a 20-minute 'Full Body Burn' on another. Or you can simply stick to one of the pre-made workout video playlists, which make following a routine and/or focusing on one area even easier.

Kym Perfetto

While her Instagram feed is full of badass biking shots, cycling is only some of NASM-certified trainer Kym Perfetto's YouTube content. (Although, fun fact, she was an elite bike racer and a founding instructor at SoulCycle.) Head over to her KymNonStop channel and you'll find some of the best YouTube workout videos on the world wide web. Whether it's a six-minute homemade sandbag routine or a 20-minute cardio kickboxing fitness video, Perfetto is set on making you sweat.

What really makes the Apple Fitness+ Trainer's channel stand out are her accessible workout videos. Take her seated cardio and core workout video, for example. After a 10-minute warm-up, you'll power through strengthening exercises, such as butt lifts and tricep dips — all of which can be done without equipment. (Give one of her workout videos a try with this five-minute abs blast .)

The Best At-Home Workout Videos—How to Find the Right One for You

Staying active has never been more convenient.

Lauren is a former editor at Real Simple and currently serves as a senior digital editor for Better Homes & Gardens.

home workout video

Emily Peterson is an experienced fact-checker and editor with Bachelor's degrees in English Literature and French.

Once you know how to start working out , getting hooked is easy (especially if you enjoy the workouts you're doing!). Both general exercise and working out more formally are linked to all sorts of physical , mental , and emotional health benefits, so it's clear why so many people rely on it for maintaining their mood, immune system strength , energy levels, strength and stability, and overall health .

But going to the gym isn't always feasible. A busy schedule makes shlepping to the gym a chore; group workout classes can get expensive; and not everyone likes to do burpees in a hot room with 25 strangers. And these are just a few factors that make a consistent, in–person fitness routine hard to sustain.

Of course, taking good walks and learning how to start running are both great (free!) options to get you up and moving, but running every day can be hard on the body. Plus, extreme weather and environmental factors (like the lack of a safe route nearby) can hinder a regular walking or jogging habit.

That's where home workout videos and online fitness streaming platforms can save the day. A virtual workout video or app offers the same expert instruction, variety, and motivation as a studio class—all from the comfort of home. If you have an Apple Watch, for example, it's very easy to access workouts through Apple Fitness Plus . And thankfully, most online fitness services accommodate small spaces and limited workout equipment.

When you're ready to mix things up beyond your usual squats , planks , and stretches , here's how to find an at-home fitness option you like.

How to Choose the Best Home Workout Videos (for You)

With so many virtual exercise options, finding the right program for your lifestyle and fitness level can seem challenging, but it doesn't need to be. The most important thing to remember is that no matter your goals, the best home workout videos are the ones you'll actually do .

"Any fitness app [you use] should feel like it speaks to you," says Danny Saltos , NASM-certified personal trainer and creator of the Train With Danny app. "Like walking into a fitness studio, you want to feel like you belong. If your initial reaction is overwhelmed, scared, or intimidated, it's probably not the right fit, and you should exit.

It's helpful to try a variety before you commit, especially if there's a membership fee involved. Fortunately, there's more than enough free content on YouTube (but do a little homework to make sure your pick is a credible source for health/fitness advice) and free trials available with most subscription-based services. Don't forget to cancel before the trial is over if you're uninterested.

You may also benefit from investing in a few small pieces of exercise equipment—such as light weights, resistance bands , a jump rope , or yoga blocks—to maximize options and strengthen specific muscles and skills. At the very least, get yourself a thick, non-slip exercise mat ( Bala and Alo make super-comfortable ones), which will make exercise safer and reduce stress on the body.

Below is our definitive list of the top at-home workouts available right now. Some are free via YouTube, while others require nominal to reasonable fees. While you might be hesitant to spend extra money when the free content exists, you may find that investing in your health and wellness may motivate you to exercise more, and many of the fee- or subscription-based services can offer perks you value, like progress tracking, a supportive (virtual) member community, access to real trainers, and more.

The Best Home Workout Videos

No matter your fitness level or workout preference, Alo Moves offers more than 3,000 videos and has something for everyone. Say goodbye to boredom with yoga, HIIT, barre, Pilates classes, and more at your fingertips every day. We also love the free daily meditations. Classes range from five to 75 minutes and are doable with or without equipment so you can squeeze in a workout on even the busiest days.

Enjoy a free 14-day trial, then pay $20 per month, or $199 per year, if you're hooked by the end of week two.

Blogilates has both free and paid options. The Blogilates YouTube channel has been around for over a decade and has tons of free content, including daily workouts, challenges, and individual videos for abs, arms, glutes, and beyond.

Those who can't get enough can always download the Body by Blogilates app. There's a seven-day free trial as well as two membership options. The Workout pass costs $4 per month or $40 per year. There's also a new All-Access pass, which includes the Journeys program that allows users to track their progress for 90 days, including photos and journal entries. It costs $7 per month or $70 for the year.

The creators of Bala Bangles , the comfortable wrist and ankle weights, have also developed an entirely free app that doesn't require the purchase of any Bala products. Balacize currently has over 100 short-but-fun modules available (with more coming), so you can create and save custom "playlists."

This is a great choice for anyone who likes to focus on working out specific parts of their body, use a variety of equipment, or fit in shorter workouts. With efficient sessions led by renowned trainers including Saltos and Ridge Davis along with a colorful backdrop, this app is ideal for anyone who likes to have fun while they sweat.

The Sculpt Society

Love to dance? Then join The Sculpt Society , created by professional dancer Megan Roup. The fun never stops on this app, which offers live and on-demand classes. One thing that sets TSS apart is its unique offerings, including pre and post-natal, beginner, injury-safe, and quickie videos. There's a free seven-day trial, which costs $20 per month or $180 annually to join.

Train With Danny

If you've ever wanted to work with a certified personal trainer without the cost, you'll love the Train With Danny app . Designed for all levels, this one is great for home exercisers and gym-goers alike. It features customizable workouts, goal-specific programs, corrective exercises, nutrition guidance, step-by-step demos, and fresh content every month. There's a free seven-day trial, then pay $15 per month or $99 per year to keep going.

It offers 16 workout varieties—strength training, dance HIIT, barre, yoga, cardio boxing—you name it, and ObĂ© probably has it. It's fabulous for beginners, anyone who needs a dash of variety, and even offers a set of kid-friendly moves for active little ones. It's free to download and try for seven days, then join for $25 monthly or $170 annually.

Yoga — Alo Yoga

It makes sense we’d turn to clothing brand Alo Yoga for workout ideas too. And if you’re pressed for time, we love this 15-minute flow to set our good intentions and energy up for the day ahead.

Yoga — Corepower Yoga

If you’re looking for a full-body workout that incorporates some weight training, turn to Corepower Yoga. This hour session flies by as you build to strengthen your core and endurance. It’s one of the most satisfying workouts out there.

Yoga — Boho Beautiful

Created by Juliana Spicoluk and Mark Spicoluk, Boho Beautiful is the positive content we need right now. You can find all sorts of yoga (and even pilates and other fitness workouts) videos, but we especially love this 15-minute abs session for when we are trying to focus on that specific area of the body. Plus, it’s set against the most beautiful backdrop.

Cardio — 305 Fitness

If you haven’t tried a 305 fitness class before, click this video immediately. This isn’t a workout—it’s a dance party. Classes vary, but we love this non-stop 30-minute video to get our heart rate up. It incorporates jumping jacks and simple dance moves that will get even the most rhythmically-challenged person believing they can be a BeyoncĂ© backup dancer. With great music and instructors that just hype you up the entire time, you won’t have more fun doing anything else.

Cardio — Orangetheory

Orangetheory Fitness workouts are broken up into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training. This workout is intense, but in the best way possible. This 45-minute class will build your upper body strength and have your core feeling stronger the more you keep up with it.

HIIT — Natacha Oceane

No equipment? No noise? No impact? This 20-minute workout from Natacha Oceane can be done anywhere. She creates unique moves that intensify the more reps you get through. While it’s still really hard, it’s also a great intro for someone who has been intimidated by HIIT classes.

HIIT — Chloe Ting

This all-standing 15-minute workout burns calories fast. Chloe Ting incorporates jumps, lunges, squats, and more in this intense HIIT workout.

HIIT — MadFit

The longest HIIT workout video on our list doesn’t involve a lot of jumping but is still very intense. Each interval focusing on different parts of the body so you get a full workout. It’s another great intro option for beginners.

Cardio — Pamela Reif

This may only be 15 minutes long, but get ready to sweat—a lot. You’ll be doing jump squats, jumping jacks, kick planks, and half burpees in 30-second intervals for a couple of reps. But once you’re done, you’ll feel super accomplished.

Low Impact — Body Project

If fitness influencers aren’t for you, this will be. The Body Project was made for real people and proves that you don’t need high-intensity workouts to see results. In the 30-minute video, you build up a sweat with simple low impact moves that don’t require any equipment. It’s great for beginners or anyone who is just getting back into the working out game.

Low Impact — Joanna Soh

It’s always beneficial to build a strong core no matter your fitness goal. This low impact 30-minute workout video helps you do just that without any equipment. After a few sessions, you’ll definitely notice that other workouts are a little easier to handle.

Low Impact — P. Volve

This low impact workout involves the smallest movements that will still sculpt your body. And don’t let these tiny moves fool you—they may look easy but you’ll be feeling sore afterward. Consider your glutes and arms activated.

Low Impact — Koboko Fitness

Walking is great exercise but when it gets colder, no one wants to take a walk outside. So walk inside your apartment no matter how small it is thanks to this 20-minute video. Some side and front shuffles mixed with constant arm movement will get your heart rate up and blood flowing for a really great low impact workout.

Pilates — Blogilates

This pilates video mixes ab, glute, and cardio workouts for a 14-minute calorie-burning session that you’ll want to incorporate again and again into your regimen. It’s hard not to love pilates after this.

Pilates — Move With Nicole

Here, you’ll find a pilates and yoga fusion for a total body workout. It’s slow, but you’ll be working every muscle and part of your body for 40 minutes. It will leave you feeling strengthened and relaxed.

Pilates — Lottie Murphy

For a really intense pilates workout, turn to this 30-minute video. Lottie Murphy will be working out your abs, glutes, back, and more for a strengthened core and toned body.

Pilates — Isa Welly

If you’re looking to increase flexibility and tone the lower part of your body, turn to this video. Isa Welly walks you through this 30-minute pilates session that is low impact and moderately paced. It’s a great workout that’s easy on the joints. What more can you ask for?

How to Do a Beginner Workout at Home

A Step-By-Step Guide to Lose Weight and Boost Your Health

Malia Frey is a weight loss expert, certified health coach, weight management specialist, personal trainer, and fitness nutrition specialist.

home workout video

Verywell / Madelyn Goodnight

You don't have to do long or difficult workouts to lose weight or improve your health and fitness. ï»ż ï»ż Beginner workouts can provide real results from the comfort of your own home, and most easy workouts for beginners don't require expensive equipment. There's no reason not to get started.

If you're ready to lose weight , boost your confidence, and increase your energy level, begin with any of these easy workouts. Within just a few days, you should start to notice improvements in your fitness level. Use these tips to challenge yourself, and build on your results over time.

Before You Begin

Before you start working out at home, it's important to follow a few precautionary measures. Always consult your healthcare provider prior to starting this or any other workout program.

If you have a health condition, such as an injury, a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or type 2 diabetes, you should discuss exercise modifications to stay safe during your workout. ï»ż ï»ż

Enlist the help of friends or family to support you in your journey to better health. Telling others about your new fitness plan can help you to stay accountable.

Lastly, it's important to set a goal for your new home workout program. Write out your SMART goal (a goal that is specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound). Post it in a place where you will see it on a regular basis. ï»ż ï»ż This will serve as a regular reminder of your commitment.

Workout Length

When you are just getting started, setting a realistic time goal for exercise is key. You don't need to sweat for hours every day to gain health benefits. Just a few minutes each day can make a real difference in the way you look and feel.

David Chesworth, B.S., ACSM is the Fitness Director and a Wellness Coach at  Hilton Head Health , a weight loss and wellness retreat located in South Carolina. He works with clients of all levels to develop healthy exercise habits. He says that it is often smart to "do less than you think you need."

While this might seem like an odd recommendation coming from an exercise trainer, he explains that it is not uncommon for our mental readiness to be in a different place than our physical readiness for exercise.

If you haven't exercised in a long time, you might be eager to get fit. This could drive you to take on grueling workouts. Unfortunately, your body may need to start at a slower pace.

"Do whatever you can do to get started," Chesworth says, noting that even a five-minute workout has benefits. "Just a few minutes of activity each day helps to build the right mindset. Completing five minutes of exercise regularly can help you to build the confidence to complete an additional five minutes and your commitment builds from there." ï»ż ï»ż

Elizabeth Huggins, M.E.S.S., RDN, LD, CDE agrees. Huggins is a registered dietitian at Hilton Head Health who offers a creative approach for beginner workouts at home. "You can simply move your body for the duration of two or three of your favorite songs," she says. Eventually, you can add to your playlist to lengthen the workout, and mix up the songs to keep it interesting.

Basic Beginner Home Workout #1

Walking is one of the best forms of exercise for beginners. ï»ż ï»ż However, finding enough time, along with the right location to go for a walk doesn't always pan out. What if the weather isn't cooperating? Or, what if you need to be home at a certain time to care for a child or another loved one? Luckily, simple, everyday activities can turn into a workout in no time.

Chesworth highlights three everyday movements that burn energy, build muscular strength, improve balance, and enhance your flexibility. Try doing multiple repetitions within a short time frame. For a quick five-minute workout, repeat these individual activities several times.

Getting in and out of a chair. The simple act of sitting down in a chair and standing up requires you to tighten your tummy, stabilize your hips, and engage your leg muscles. Getting in and out of a chair repeatedly can be a great beginner exercise to do at home. This movement mimics a squat , which is a fundamental bodyweight exercise often seen in more advanced gym workouts.

Walking up and down the stairs. Stairs can easily transform into a home workout challenge. Going up the stairs builds strength in your upper and lower legs. ï»ż ï»ż It's also a good workout for your glutes (the muscles in your backside).

Your heart rate increases when doing stairs, causing you to breathe heavier as you climb, which makes for great cardio. Going up the stairs can be difficult, but walking down the stairs requires balance and knee stability. Use the handrail as needed, especially when you are starting out.

Getting up and down from the floor. Do you have a yoga mat or an area of soft carpet where you can sit down on the ground? The simple act of sitting down on the floor and then standing up again requires full-body strength, flexibility, and coordination. Functional movements like this will help you build the skills needed for more complex activities in a gym or an exercise class.

Once you get comfortable with each of these movements, Chesworth suggests combining all three into a home circuit workout . Do each activity up to five times before moving on to the next. Repeat the series two to five times in a row for a complete workout that you can do from the comfort of your home.

Beginner Home Workout #2

If you don't have enough time to exercise at home, consider multitasking while completing chores. Huggins says that she uses housework sneak in a few strengthening exercises each day.

"Sweeping my porch is a great way to exercise the muscles in my midsection," she says. "I can sweep away leaves and tone my core at the same time."

The rotational movement involved in reaching for the broom and sweeping it across your body works the oblique abdominal muscles along the sides of your midsection. Lifting the broom back to the starting point builds the rectus abdominis (which flexes the torso) and the transverse abdominis (which holds your torso steady).

Many household chores can turn into a quick workout. For instance, standing on your toes to dust a high shelf helps strengthen your calves. Adding a lunge movement to your vacuuming routine works your hips and thighs.

More Beginner Home Workouts

You don't need fancy or expensive equipment to exercise at home. When you're ready to try new workouts, use one of these resources to boost your metabolism and increase fitness level.

When you're ready for a challenge, the second workout plan will put your weight loss plan into hyper-drive.

What's Next?

Once you've been consistent with your home exercise program, you may be inspired to branch out and try new fitness programs. Here are a few options to consider.

Invest in a Home Gym Equipment

Buy home exercise equipment to add variety to your current program. Even the most basic fitness gadgets can provide a new workout experience. Chesworth says resistance bands are a good option because they are easy to use and inexpensive.

Go for bands with handles, which tend to be easier to manage. He also suggests investing in a mat, dumbbells, or a stretching strap to mix things up and avoid getting stuck in a rut. If you choose to work with weights, a good dumbbell rack will increase the convenience of your home gym.

Look for Online Workouts and Classes

Online workouts are another great option. Many different websites offer online classes and even one-on-one training for beginners.

If you get tired of exercising at home, consider joining a gym. Chesworth notes that many people benefit from the social aspect of group exercise classes. ï»ż ï»ż The accountability and support from a group can vital for sticking with an exercise program long term.

Go on a Wellness Retreat

Lastly, you might want to visit a healthy living resort to build on your base for lasting health and wellness. Destinations like Hilton Head Health, Duke University, and the Pritikin Longevity Center have programs designed for people of all ages and fitness levels.

An investment in one of these comprehensive programs can help you to learn important skills and find the motivation to maintain a healthy, strong body for a lifetime.

22 Free Workouts You Can Do at Home Right Now

Updated April 14, 2020

We’ve added a list of exercise videos for kids .

This post was originally published on March 24, 2020.

With gyms and fitness studios closing their doors in an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus, many personal trainers , fitness instructors, and studios have shifted their offerings to virtual sessions—and some established online fitness programs have extended their trial periods or made select content available free of charge.

Heading outside for a walk, a run, or a bike ride is still permissible in most areas—and, in general, encouraged, with proper adherence to social-distancing protocol . (The physical and psychological benefits of sunshine, fresh air, and freedom can’t be oversold right now.) But if you find yourself eager to move while you’re displaced from your gym or otherwise stuck inside, free online workouts can be excellent stopgaps—whether you want to break a cardio sweat, strength-train, keep up a yoga practice, or just unspool yourself after working from home all day . Whatever you choose, be sure to pay attention to your form , listen to your body, and be kind to yourself. Even five or 10 minutes of exercise a day counts. Give yourself kudos for making it happen.

General fitness

Aaptiv (free Apple Podcast access; free seven-day trial period for $99 annual subscription; monthly subscription with no free trial, $15) The subscription-based audio-workout app Aaptiv has released a selection of its workouts and meditation sessions for free on Apple Podcasts . Expect circuit training, a few yoga flows, and sleep-focused meditation. Aaptiv is also offering 50 percent off its $99 annual subscription , though there is no free trial with that deal.

The Body Coach TV (free) The more than 250 workouts on The Body Coach TV, formulated by host Joe Wicks, are engaging and upbeat. (He’s relaxed enough to let his toddler daughter ham it up during one live session.) You can find a variety of 15- to 20-minute workouts, as well as a “7 Days of Sweat” challenge. Wicks also has a bunch of short, charming videos for kids that’ll get them moving.

Fitness Blender (free) Several Wirecutter staffers turn to Fitness Blender for its solid, no-frills, gimmick-free workouts. The channel has roughly 600 to choose from, including a lower-body set done with resistance bands and a no-equipment-required, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) cardio workout.

HASfit (free) This down-to-earth app (and YouTube channel) features a variety of scalable workouts that include HIIT, low-impact, and strength-training options. Wirecutter research editor Christina Colizza “appreciates that it’s real, and low-key.”

Heather Robertson (free) Christina also likes Heather Robertson’s large selection of low-impact, jump-free workouts, plus the sizable library of other options, including a 12-week plan. If you’re confident in your knowledge of exercises and don’t need a lot of instruction, this option could be for you. There are no warm-ups, cooldowns, or voiceover explanations here—just music, a label calling out each new exercise in a given sequence, and a countdown clock for each move, which matters when you’re doing timed workouts.

Nike Training Club (free) The Nike Training Club app is free—its premium option included—and the content is plentiful and varied. Erin Price, Wirecutter’s community lead, recently went back to this app after using it while she was living in a rural area with no gym.

ObĂ© (free 30-day trial period; $27-a-month subscription fee) The colorful, high-energy ObĂ© app has extended its seven-day free trial to 30 days (use the code ATHOME at checkout; the subscription price is $27 a month). Its cardio, strength, and yoga and meditation classes—both live and on-demand—include Obé’s signature 28-minute workouts and 10-minute express sessions. It also recently added workouts for kids (backed by Kidz Bop songs) to its library; the four 10-minute sessions are for little ones ages 3 to 10 and have a mix of fun dance moves (party jumps, anyone?) and exercises like squats and planks.

Peloton (free 90-day trial period; $13-a-month subscription fee) Normally free for 30 days, the Peloton app is now available to new users for 90 days free of charge. (The regular subscription price is $13 a month.) The app includes Peloton’s wildly popular indoor-cycling classes, for which you’ll need your own bike (we have a review of the Peloton ). But its large library of on-demand and live off-the-bike classes—including yoga, strength training, cardio high-intensity interval training, bootcamp, meditation, and stretching—are well done and wide-ranging.

Popsugar Fitness (free) From workouts for beginners to full-body bootcamps to equipment-free cardio sessions, Popsugar Fitness has a wide variety of programming and, often, a group-fitness feel—which class devotees may find comforting.

Specialty workouts

Johnson & Johnson Official 7-Minute Workout (free) The seven-minute high-intensity circuit training workout gained traction a few years ago for its efficiency and science-backed efficacy . It’s not quite as straightforward as it sounds—it takes several rounds of the seven minutes to reap the full benefits, and certain populations (those with high blood pressure, for instance) should consider an alternative. But the short, intense efforts followed by rest intervals, if done right, can get you moving and in the habit of regular exercise. This version has voice and video cues and a clear countdown clock.

Kit Rich (free) Staff writer Lauren Dragan likes the Pilates-inspired workouts by celebrity trainer Kit Rich and is a fan of her overall approach, which is “very body loving and encouraging without over-perkiness,” Lauren says. Rich (whose brand is called Kichgo ) recently began posting live daily workouts to her YouTube channel .

The New York Times’s 6-Minute Workouts (free, with a New York Times subscription ) The Well section of The New York Times highlights these three six-minute workouts for when time is short. (The Times is Wirecutter’s parent company.) Each workout includes an exercise for cardio, lower body, upper body, and core. You do each move for 30 seconds followed by 15 seconds of rest, and then you repeat the sequence. The goal is to do as many quality repetitions in the time frame as possible. Two rejuvenating yoga poses close out each session.

Reddit’s Bodyweight Fitness Community (free) Wirecutter editor Tim Barribeau plans to start following this Reddit community’s recommended routine for bodyweight-workout enthusiasts. It does require a few props, including a pullup bar and a sturdy spot to do rows (such as a hefty table or a low pullup bar). Its six basic exercises are done in pairs and include sets of three core exercises.

Strong by Zumba (free with Amazon Prime membership) If you’re an Amazon Prime subscriber, you can stream this 20-minute high-intensity Strong by Zumba workout. Sharp and specific, it features a flow that syncs each exercise to the beat of the music. And if you’re craving a dance-cardio crowd, Zumba Fitness Concert Live (also on Amazon Prime Video) is about as high-energy as it gets.

Athletes for Yoga (free two-week trial period; $10-a-month subscription fee) Formerly known as Jasyoga, Athletes for Yoga has a main subscription-based option ($10 a month, with a two-week free trial) but also has a small collection of sessions on YouTube that caters to runners and endurance athletes (such as for post-run hip reset and dynamic hamstring flexibility) and includes meditation. Founder Erin Taylor does quick resets periodically on Instagram Live , too.

CorePower Yoga on Demand (free) Like many boutique studios and gyms, CorePower Yoga has temporarily closed its more than 200 studios nationwide because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but it has also opened its complete on-demand library to all, for free. Choose from everything from forearm flow to chest-opening sequences, or dip into a short meditation.

Glo (free two-week trial period; $18-a-month subscription fee) Wirecutter deputy editor Christine Cyr Clisset uses Glo to work in a yoga or Pilates session when she’s working from home and parenting solo . Glo, which also has meditation classes and multichapter courses (maybe it’s time to learn that handstand?), offers a two-week free trial. After that, it costs $18 a month.

Yoga With Adriene (free) This popular YouTube channel, led by yoga instructor Adriene Mishler, is also a Wirecutter self-care favorite . Relaxed and approachable, the channel is packed with numerous videos covering a wide range of yoga needs and wants. Videos are often labeled with their intention (“Ignite,” “Welcome,” “Awaken,” and so on); Mishler’s dog is often found snoozing by her mat.

We compiled a full list of exercise videos for kids that includes expert tips on how to keep your family active while spending time at home.

Alo Yoga Kids Yoga & Meditation from Alo Gives (free) Alo Gives (the philanthropic arm of yoga-wear brand Alo) has published roughly 60 videos, each about five minutes long, that walk kids through, say, how to be flexible inside and out or puppy meditation (a kid-geared technique, no puppy required). For something longer, this 15-minute session with instructor Alissa Kepas might do the trick—unicorn pose included.

Cosmic Kids Yoga (free) This YouTube channel tends to a pint-size yoga practice with engaging themed adventures inspired by characters and stories (Betsy the Banana! The Three Little Pigs!). There’s also guided meditation. The Frozen -themed story session held the attention of Wirecutter editor Winnie Yang’s 4-year-old.

Go Noodle (free) Go Noodle is all about getting kids to move and learn. The videos offer kooky ( the Koo Koo Kangaroo! duo throwing a cat party ), cool (the Blazer Fresh trio mixing dance moves and punctuation ), calming (an instructor focuses on focus ), and more. Expect things to get silly, and be warned: This program includes “Baby Shark”–style jingles you may be singing in the shower for months to come.

Pancake Manor (free) This YouTube channel of music for kids has a collection of short action songs for the preschool set that will get antsy bodies up and moving. Doesn’t everyone need a shake break ?

A complete guide for strength-training at home + 4-part plan to get started.

BB Arrington, CPT

Ready to begin your journey to a stronger, healthier you? Whether you're brand-new to strength training or only have a little bit of experience from group fitness classes, I've created a four-week, easy-to-follow strength training guide for mbg. The goal: I want to help you feel stronger and more confident working with weights.

What is strength training?

Strength training is the practice of using resistance to train your skeletal muscles to get stronger by enhancing their endurance, strength, or size (or all three).

There are many ways to strength train and various types of strength goals. For example, one can train for muscular explosiveness with plyometrics movements, or muscular endurance with higher repetitions and lower weights. You can train for hypertrophy (muscle size increase) or ultimate strength (like a powerlifter). All are phenomenal ways to strengthen the body, and depending on your personal goals, you might decide to train more in one or two different ways.

For this series, we will be using exercises that feature free weights (also known as dumbbells), as well as bodyweight exercises to focus on hypertrophy. Traditionally, to achieve hypertrophy, trainers suggest an 8- to 12-rep range—that said, recent research suggests you may be able to achieve a hypertrophic goal with a wider variety of rep ranges 1 .

Benefits of strength training at home

Better blood sugar regulation.

Other than your liver, skeletal muscles are glucose (blood sugar) deposits. With the help of the hormone insulin, glucose is carried from the blood and drawn into the cells of the muscles. This helps the body use less insulin overall to bring down blood sugar levels and contributes to insulin sensitivity, according to the American Physiology Society .  Chronically high blood sugar and blood sugar dysregulation can have a myriad of detrimental health consequences.

Enhance bone building

The NIH Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases advocates for strength training to help  build bone and slow down the rate of bone loss as we age . The activity of our muscles when we train enhances osteoblast (bone-building cells) activity.

Metabolic health support

Newer studies in the past few decades have found that the contractions from skeletal muscles influence myokine secretion—special peptides from skeletal muscles that can communicate with other organs and tissues. Research published in  Frontiers in Physiology  suggests that myokines have the ability to  prevent or improve metabolic diseases 2 .

Improvements in self-confidence & quality of life

Strength training helps  promote physical capability . Whether you've struggled to put your overstuffed carry-on in the overhead bin, or get your laundry up four flights of stairs, with increases in strength, everyday tasks will feel less effortful.

Accessibility & convenience

Perhaps you don't feel comfortable in a room full of strangers or simply don't have the resources to get to a gym regularly—carving out a little space and time for yourself at home will get you through whatever phase of life you're currently in. Working out at home can be just as efficient as working out at a commercial gym, and it's arguably much more convenient.

What you need to get started

If you're just beginning your journey with weight training, know that sometimes you may feel a little confused or unsure—and that is part of the process. Consider it a lifelong practice of learning and improving. Even the top strength athletes have coaches throughout their professional careers.

I also encourage you to be fearless, not reckless. Know that your form will probably be off when you're learning, but it won't destroy your body—even if you are a little sore in the "wrong" muscles the next day. It's all part of the learning curve. Do take note, however, if you feel pinching, grinding, or shooting pains (especially in the joints)—take those as signs to make an adjustment ASAP.

For this upcoming series, you will need a few sets of dumbbells—kettlebells work well too—of different weights, preferably with more than a few pounds separating them. You'll also need a sturdy chair or bench and  a mat  or a soft surface you feel comfortable lying down on. Feel free to do these workouts barefoot (if you feel comfortable doing so)—in fact, I personally  recommend going shoeless for lower-body workouts .

Essential tips & advice

Common mistakes:

The most common mistake I see with training is not understanding the purpose of the exercise. While you may not need to know all the names of the muscles in your upper back, knowing that you're supposed to be engaging the muscles in your upper back, for example, helps build that neuromuscular connection and thus helps you find your strength faster. Knowing what the exercise is supposed to work also helps you gauge if you need to turn the challenge up a notch or dial it down.

Another common mistake is sticking with a weight that doesn't serve you. If you have the ability to try out different loads, please do. I often see someone use the same load for arm and  leg exercises . Why is that an issue? Generally most people's legs can handle more weight than their upper. So if you're squatting with the same weight as you’re bicep curling, chances are you won't be challenging your lower body.

Progressing your workout:

So how does one safely progress the level of difficulty of your home workouts? I like to use the rate of perceived exertion as the barometer. Notice if an exercise on Week 1 feels like an 8/10 challenge, but the next week feels like a 6. Congrats! That means you're getting stronger, and it's time to ante up.

Always remember that there are more ways to enhance the level of difficulty besides just adding more reps or using heavier dumbbells: Try including a pause at the top of the exercise,  add a quarter repetition to each , use more range of motion when appropriate, shorten your rest intervals, etc.

Finding proper form:

While each exercise will have its own specific form, bracing or engaging your core will nine times out of 10 make the move clearer, by maintaining a level of support through your trunk.

With movements that have a large range of motion, like a lunge or a squat, try setting your breath at the top. For example, when performing a squat,  inhale , hold the breath, squat down, stand up,  exhale . This helps you maintain intra-abdominal pressure, which will help you feel more stable.

4-Part Strength Training Plan

Ready to put this knowledge into practice? Below, I've outlined a four-part plan that's low impact, and perfectly suited to do from the safety and privacy of your living room.

If this is your very first time working with weights, feel free to progress through the workout plan at a slower pace. Consider each "week" a different "phase" or "stage": Take two weeks (or more) to continue to the next level. The most important thing is to listen to your body, and progress accordingly.

You'll notice I didn't specify certain days of the week. That's because I want this to work for you and your schedule. Slate these workouts any day you see fit—just try to stick to the indicated amount of rest days (for example, in Week 1, there are two days of rest in between the workouts).

  • Day 1: Arms/Chest
  • Day 4: Legs
  • Day 3: Legs
  • Day 6: Core
  • Day 3: Glutes
  • Day 5: Back
  • Day 7: Core
  • Day 2: Glutes
  • Day 4: Back
  • Day 7: Legs

Workouts to include in your training plan

Each Monday this month, I'll be releasing a new workout that fits perfectly into this workout plan (arms/chest, glutes, back, core, and legs).

In addition, here are some workouts that you can also slate in accordingly:

Arms/Chest:

  • Efficient Upper-Body Strength Workout
  • 10-Minute Butt Workout
  • Eccentric Workout Routine
  • At-Home Back Exercises
  • Total Core Workout
  • Strength & Conditioning Workout
  • Floor Workout
  • Lower-Body Workout
  • 7-Minute Mini Band Workout
  • Longevity Stability Workout

"We alternate between cardio and strength, and it's all set to a really fun, heart-pounding playlist," Jablow said. "It was something really different that I really had to introduce to people to get them to sort of try something new."

Jablow, formerly a trader in the finance industry, sprang into the world of jumping rope after a neck injury sidelined her normal running routine. After a friend recommended she take up jump rope, she developed her unique program, and was soon recruited to teach classes while pursuing fitness instruction certifications.

"One day, I woke up, and decided I'm leaving New York. I'm leaving Wall Street, and I'm going to start my own fitness business," Jablow said. "At any point in life, you can really change, you can create something that you're passionate about, and make something of it."

Jablow came to Chicago, and started teaching her method at local gyms. She said part of the fun of jumping rope is the challenge of learning new tricks from seasoned jumpers, and demonstrating them for others on Instagram and in-person.

"When my client unlocks a new trick, it's probably more exciting for me than it is for them," Jablow said. "It just feeds my soul and inspires me in spreading the love of jump rope."

Jablow describes jumping rope as both a physical and mental workout because it tests the jumper's coordination, while working out the entire body. She admits that sometimes she gets temporary "battle wounds" from the rope that disappear in hours, but hurt nonetheless.

"When you're outside in the cold, and you whack yourself with it, it feels like the worst pain ever," said Jablow, holding a PVC rope. "No pain, no gain."

On her website getroped.com , students can sign up for pop-up classes and purchase jump ropes. Jablow, once a competitive figure skater, said her love of fitness comes from growing up in a family who valued staying healthy.

"I've sort of been inspired by my family; everyone stays really active, and inspires each other," Jablow said. "My grandfather, who died when he was 103, always said you can retire from work, but you can never retire from working out."

Police: Planet Fitness locations evacuated after bomb threats

Authorities say ‘no evidence of any threat’ discovered at locations.

FAIRHOPE, Ala. ( WALA ) - Planet Fitness locations in southwest Alabama were evacuated and checked over by authorities Saturday after bomb threats made via email against the gym franchise locations.

Police said no bombs were found.

The threats emailed to media outlets cited several locations targeted.

“No evidence of any threat was discovered at the locations,” said Katrina Frazier of the Mobile Police Department.

The Planet Fitness in Fairhope, as well as neighboring businesses at Baldwin Square Shopping Center, were evacuated Saturday afternoon because of a bomb threat there, reported the Fairhope Police Department.

Police in Fairhope said the building was cleared by Mobile FBI and was reopened to customers and employees.

“It is important to note that many of the Planet Fitness franchises around the country have received similar threats in recent weeks,” stated the FPD on the agency’s Facebook page.

Daphne Police Chief Brian Gulsby confirmed with FOX10 News the Planet Fitness in Daphne was also evacuated.
