How To Change Your Driver's License Photo

Until recently, I had only taken one driver’s license photo in my life. I was a bit of a late bloomer when it came to driving, and I didn’t get my license until I was 19. I didn’t realize it then, but that license would serve as a time capsule for my late-teens look for more than a decade.

As the years went on, my image evolved, but I was stuck with the same heavy eyeliner and overbearing jewelry in my ID picture. When it came time to renew, the process was handled by mail, so there was no need to snap a new photo. But when Real IDs began rolling out last year, requiring applicants to visit a physical DMV location, I finally had my chance at a new, improved photo.

You can imagine my dismay when after careful primping, an hour wait at the DMV and more than $30 in fees, I received my license in the mail only to be horrified at the results. The photo was taken at an unflattering, upward angle, and the lighting was so stark against my pale skin that it was hard to tell where my chin ended and neck began. To top it all off, my eyes were looking toward something slightly off-center, giving me a somewhat confused expression.

I needed a do-over.

If you also have a driver’s license photo that you can’t stand, you might be wondering if there’s anything you can do about it. Fortunately, you don’t have to be stuck with that unflattering photo for the next several years.

How To Replace Your ID Photo

If your driver’s license is ever lost or stolen, the process for replacing it is usually fairly simple. But what if you want to change elements of the ID, such as the photo?

“If you are unhappy with your driver’s license photo, you can go to the DMV and apply for a duplicate license. They will take a new photo, and provide you with a temporary license,” said Rodney Yo, owner of a California DMV-licensed online traffic school .

In fact, all you usually need to get your license photo changed is to complete the proper form and bring your existing driver’s license to a DMV office, according to David Reischer, a traffic law attorney at LegalAdvice.com .

The form will vary depending on what state you live in. For example, New York requires you to fill out a Form MV-44 . “State laws for photo ID changes vary, so contact the DMV in your local jurisdiction to learn the proper state form to complete,” Reischer said.

Keep in mind there is also a fee required to update the photo on a driver’s license or a learner’s permit, which may differ from the cost to renew your license. As an example, these are the fees to replace or duplicate a license in several major states:

• California: $32
• Florida: $25 + possible $6.25 fee
• Georgia: $32
• Illinois: $5
• Michigan: $5
• New York: $17.50
• North Carolina: $13
• Ohio: $24.50
• Pennsylvania: $30.50

In some cases, it may be cheaper to update the photo on a non-driver photo ID card (in New York, it’s only $13 for an ID versus $17.50 for a driver’s license). Also, you should be prepared to surrender your current driver’s license, Reischer said.

How To Take A Good Driver’s License Photo

The process for replacing your license photo is pretty easy, but how do you avoid screwing up the retake? As I learned personally, it’s a good idea to keep things simple and avoid any makeup, clothing and accessories that might end up looking garish or dated.

Neck out, chin down.

What about crafting a more flattering face shape? “One of the main complaints people often have about straight-on headshots like driver’s license pictures is that they end up looking as if they have a double chin,” said Dave Bowden, a style consultant and founder of IrreverentGent.com . “Fortunately, there’s an easy little hack you can use to avoid this.”

Bowden said to start by extending your face forward and up at a 45-degree angle, so that your neck muscles are tense. Then, lower your chin so that your face is no longer at 45 degrees, but is looking straight ahead. “This position feels awkward and it’s difficult to hold for too long, but it stretches your neck and keeps the skin beneath your chin from bunching up, making your jawline look much more refined,” he said.

Ask for a retake.

According to Yo, there aren’t any rules against retaking your DMV photo if you don’t like the way the first one came out. However, whether you’re allowed to will likely depend on the number of people waiting in line and the disposition of the person working that day. It doesn’t hurt to ask, just keep your request reasonable and limited to one retake.

Address change

By law you have to notify the RMV of a change of address within 30 days of moving. This can be done through phone, online, or in-person.

If you are only changing your address, go online and then write the new residential address using permanent ink on the back of the driver's license or ID card in the area provided, or you can have a driver's license/ID issued for $25.

Name change

Name change requests must be done at an RMV Service Center. You must make a  reservation  at an RMV Service Center to have a new photo and signature captured, and obtain a new driver's license or ID card. You must complete an application  before visiting the Service Center at the scheduled time of your reservation.

• If you are applying for a REAL ID driver's license or ID card and your current name doesn’t match the one that appears on your lawful presence document(s), you must prove the legal name change with an acceptable document in order to qualify for a REAL ID credential.   A marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court document all qualify.
• If you are applying for a Standard driver's license or ID card, you may change your name with no documentation as long as there is no attempt to defraud.

Gender change

If you are changing your gender designation, you will need to fill out an application  and make a  reservation at an RMV Service Center.

Your gender will appear in the 'Sex' field of your credential as either M, F, or X.

Veteran's indicator

Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who were honorably discharged can choose to have the word "Veteran" printed on their MA license or ID card. The veteran's indicator can be added at the time of your license or ID card renewal or when you order a duplicate permit, license, or ID card.

You will need to present a completed license and ID application and one of the following documents to prove eligibility:

• A DD-214 that indicates honorable discharge; only the long form (full page) is acceptable
• A DD-215 that indicates honorable discharge
• An honorable discharge form

Organ donor

When you apply for a Massachusetts driver's license or ID, you will have the opportunity to become an organ and tissue donor. By registering as an organ and tissue donor with the RMV, you will be entered into the Massachusetts Donor Registry, which is legal consent for donation. However, also share your decision to donate with your family and friends so that they know about your decision to become an organ and tissue donor.

Even if you are currently a registered donor, you still need answer "yes" online or on the application you complete in order to remain in the donor registry.

REAL ID or Standard

Decide what type of card you want – a REAL ID driver's license (valid for federal purposes) or Standard Massachusetts driver's license (not valid for federal purposes).  Go to mass.gov/id  to decide.

If you want a Standard driver's license, you may be able to complete your renewal online by entering the information from your lawful presence document .

• If your name differs on the lawful presence document, you must also provide proof of the legal name change
• Social Security number (1 document)
• Massachusetts residency (2 documents)
• Complete your application online
• Bring your required identification and completed application to your appointment at an RMV Service Center

You will probably have a tough time finding anyone who actually likes the photo that is on their driver’s license. Most of the time, people have an expression on their face that they do not like, or their hair looks funny, or there is something else that bugs them about their photos.

What most people do not realize is that they can have a driver’s license photo that does look alright, as long as they prepare for the photo ahead of time .

You may not need to bother doing as much as you would if you were going to have a portrait photo taken, but for a license photo, or even a passport photo, there are things you can do so that you will actually be somewhat happy with it. After all, you are going to be stuck with it for a few years, and the last thing you want to do is see a goofy photo every time you pull your driver’s license out of your wallet .

Use eye drops

• Try to make sure that you do not get your driver’s license photo taken the morning after a party . Of course, you won’t be hung over, but you may be tired from being out late, and it will show in your eyes.

Keep your hair neat

• Make sure that your hair is neat and tidy , and that there is nothing hanging in your eyes. It is important that your eyes be completely visible in your photo.

Don’t wear too much makeup

• Your driver’s license photo is not a glamour portrait, so there really is no need to go all out with the heavy makeup . If a police officer pulls you over and asks to see your license, he or she is not going to be worried about whether or not you had makeup on when the photo was taken.

Don’t smile too much

• It is best to simply wear a friendly expression , the same one you would be wearing if you were pulled over.

Wear your glasses.

• If you wear contact lenses, do not wear lenses that will change the color of your eyes . Your driver’s license will state your eye color, and they need to be the same color in the photo as they are in reality.
• Also, the person taking your photo may rush you through, and you will not be happy with the end result. You will either be stuck with this photo until you renew your driver’s license, or you will have to pay to have another license and photo made.

You don’t have to be stuck with a driver’s license photo that you hate. As long as you follow the above advice, you should be very pleased with the results, and you won’t even mind showing the photo to others.

Just show up looking neat and well dressed, have your hair combed neatly, have nice bright eyes, and put on a friendly face.

Changes to your license.

If you legally change your name or need an update to your driver’s license, such as your physical description or gender identity, visit dmv.ca.gov/dlservices .

Change Your Address

If you move, you must notify DMV of your new address within ten days. Submit a change of address online at dmv.ca.gov/addresschange or by mail. It is your responsibility to ensure DMV has your correct mailing address on record.

You do not automatically get a new driver’s license when you change your address. You may request a replacement for a fee.

Replace or Renew Your Driver’s License

It is against the law to drive with an expired driver’s license. To renew or replace a lost, stolen, or damaged driver’s license, visit dmv.ca.gov/dlservices , or DMV office.

Before DMV can issue you a driver’s license, you may need to provide additional proof of your identity. Your driver’s license and identity document may expire on the same date. If so, you will be required to provide a valid identity document. If you are a minor, your parent or guardian must sign the application. Once you receive your replacement card, your old card is no longer valid. If you find the old card, destroy it.

Extend Your Driver’s License

If you are out-of-state and cannot renew, you may request a one year extension of your driver’s license. Before your driver’s license expires, submit a request with your name, driver’s license number, birth date, California residence address, and out-of-state address to [email protected] .

Limited-term driver’s licenses are not eligible for this extension.

Of course there’s change of address paperwork to deal with, but not everyone knows how important it is to change your driver’s license state of issue. Even when moving within a state, you’ll have to update your address on your driver’s license, but it becomes even more significant when you’re moving to a new state altogether with different state regulations. Switching your driver’s license from state to state as soon as possible can make your transition smoother and help you avoid other difficulties. For example, setting up utilities and other services to your new address can be much easier with a driver’s license that reflects that address.

States require that residents update their driver’s licenses when they become residents. Depending on the state, this may be required immediately, or you may be granted up to a few months of grace period after moving there. The specifics vary between states, but each has its own legal requirements regarding the allotted time frame updating your license. To help you through the process, knowing what information and documents you’ll need to update your license and where to go is useful.

You’ll begin the process of updating your driver’s license once your new address is secured. The exact agency or department that handles license updates will vary by state. One of the most common is the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), which many states use. The guide below explains how to change your driver’s license state of issuance step-by-step:

How to update your license after a move

• Identify the appropriate department and the most convenient location. The state will determine which department to use, but you can look at their individual locations to see which is closest to your new home.
• Determine the necessary documentation. Contact the department or check their website to see what information and documentation they require when updating your driver’s license. Many states have a checklist drivers can use to ensure they have all the necessary documents before arriving for their appointment.
• Make a DMV (or equivalent) appointment. You can usually schedule an appointment online or by making a call to the appropriate department. Depending on the location and time, walk-ins may also be accepted, although you’ll want to verify this beforehand. In-state move

Some states and DMVs may allow you to update your address information online when moving within a state. However, this is not guaranteed and may not be an option. In many cases, you’ll still have to go to the DMV’s location to update your information in person. Doing so is necessary not only to keep the DMV and your license up to date, but is also critical to maintain a valid auto insurance policy. Keep in mind as well that the cost of your car insurance is influenced by home ZIP code (in most states).

Out-of-state move

Switching driver’s license from state to state can involve more steps than an in-state move. If you’re moving to a new state, you’ll need to update your license with a DMV in the new state as soon as possible. While most states offer some grace period, which can range from a few days to a few months depending on the state, it’s beneficial to get this process started as soon as possible to allow you time to sort out any potential complications.

Depending on the license type you need and the state issuing it, you may be looking for a DMV, Department of Public Safety, Department of Transportation or a similar department. Below is a table highlighting which department you can expect to look for in each state and how long that state’s grace period is:

Although the process and experience can differ between states, there are some commonalities you can expect when updating your driver’s license in any state. The list below is not exhaustive, but serves as a helpful baseline for what you can reasonably anticipate:

• Wait times: DMVs are often busy, and even when they aren’t, you may end up waiting on the staff to process documents and file paperwork. Sometimes, you may have to wait for your new license instead of receiving it immediately.
• Tests: Depending on the situation, you may have to take tests to prove your eligibility. These can range from a basic vision test to full-on written and driving tests. Test requirements may be more likely if your current license is expired.
• Fees: No matter the state, you must pay a fee for your new license.
• Paperwork: Some basic paperwork is usually required when obtaining a new or updated license.
• Headshot photo: Your new license will usually require a new photo that is taken on-site. If you moved within the same state, you’ll likely be able to keep your existing license photo.

Change the photo on your driving licence

You need to renew your full or provisional driving licence if you want to update your photo. You’ll get a new licence.

You can apply online with the DVLA if you have a valid UK passport and want to use your passport photo.

It costs £14 when you apply online.

This service is also available in Welsh (Cymraeg) .

You cannot apply online if your name or title has changed or if you have a 5-year bus or lorry licence.

Before you start

To renew online you must:

• be a resident of Great Britain (there’s a different service in Northern Ireland )
• not be disqualified from driving

You’ll need:

• a valid UK passport
• your driving licence (if you do not have your licence you must say why in your application)
• your National Insurance number (if you know it)
• addresses of where you’ve lived over the last 3 years

A new licence costs £14. You can pay by MasterCard, Visa, Electron or Delta debit or credit card (there’s no fee if you’re over 70 or have a medical short period licence).

DVLA will get the photo and signature for your new driving licence from your passport. If this is not possible you will not be able to change your photo online.

DVLA will send you a confirmation email once you’ve applied. You might be asked to take part in research by email, but you can opt out.

If you have a photocard driving licence, you must renew it every 10 years - you’ll receive a reminder before your current licence ends.

Applying by post

Fill in form D1 ‘Application for a driving licence’. You can get it from most Post Offices . Include:

• a new passport type photo taken within the last month (do not sign the back of the photo)
• the photocard and paper counterpart of your current licence (if you’ve lost either, tick the relevant box on the D1 form)
• a cheque or postal order for £17, payable to DVLA (there’s no fee if you’re over 70 or have a medical short period licence)

Send your application and fee (if needed) to DVLA .

Dear Emory Community,

I have been firm in my commitment that Emory will celebrate our graduating students at Commencement. While that commitment has not changed, concerns about safety and security require us to adjust the plans.

Emory will relocate Commencement activities to the Gas South District in Duluth, Georgia, an indoor complex that includes the Gas South Arena and the Gas South Convention Center. This change in venue impacts Emory’s university-wide Commencement celebration as well as the diploma ceremonies for all nine schools, including Oxford College. Details of the revised Commencement plans, including those for related events and receptions, have been added to the Commencement website . This site will be updated as additional details become available. 

Please know that this decision was not taken lightly. It was made in close consultation with the Emory Police Department, security advisors, and other agencies — each of which advised against holding Commencement events on our campuses. 

I know that this news will be deeply disappointing to many of you. The FAQs included on the Commencement site provide answers to some of the many questions related to this change.

I want to end by congratulating the Emory Class of 2024 — a class like no other. For many of you, the pandemic interrupted your high school graduations, and you began your Emory experience online. Next Monday, we will celebrate all that you have accomplished since then. You will have your moment together, in person, alongside the people who matter to you the most. Each of your names will be read aloud, and each of you will be conferred an Emory degree. We will applaud your dedication, your accomplishments, and your resilience. You will become graduates of Emory University, ready to enter a world that needs your talents, your wisdom, and your leadership.
