An Overview of Online Freelance Writing

There is no official date when freelance writing started because freelance writers have been around even before digital platforms were created.

But it’s safe to consider the early 2000s as the dawn of the online freelance writing job trend. Notable sites like  ProBlogger shares their small-scale origins , which have become a huge success over time.

Freelance writing sites are the one-stop shop for businesses and startups seeking writing services. They’re central hubs for hiring writers and finding job boards with quality writing gigs.

Some more intuitive websites have features that allow clients to match their writing jobs with the ideal candidate. This results in a mutually beneficial arrangement that guarantees satisfaction for both the business and the content writers.

A freelance writing website reduces the need for companies to shoulder all the legwork involved in hiring talents. They don’t need complex contracts to engage experienced freelance writers.

On the writer’s side, accessing these freelance platforms streamlines the job search process and helps boost their writing portfolio.

You can have multiple freelance writing jobs in a few months, which allows you to gather referrals and recommendations from happy clients.

Freelance writing sites aren’t required to build a writing career, but they help speed up the process.

Taking on multiple writing jobs within this active community builds up your reputation, skill, and network — factors that help you stand out from the competition.

The Best Online Writing Sites at a Glance

We’ve rounded up our best picks for freelance writing websites and come up with two all-rounders.

With approximately 5 million clients using the platform, Upwork is our best pick for starters looking to understand how freelance writing works.

Its ‘Writing & Translation’ job board category boasts 146k+ active contracts, with clients giving an average 4.8 -star rating to writing professionals.

This includes a range of talents like proofreaders, content writers, translators, ghostwriters, and more.

Blogging Pro is our top choice for niche-focused freelance writing gigs.

It’s a job board that prospective freelancers can use for free, minus the need to create an account.

One of the things we like about this portal is its straightforward application process that details everything you need to know about a job with just a click.

Clients of this site must pay their writers a minimum of $15 per project, eliminating the risk of getting scammed.

Features to Look for In an Online Writing Website

Freelance writing opportunities have attracted many full-time professionals, so the competition is high.

This can result in some people, especially those with no experience, agreeing to jobs that don’t honor their contracts.

To  avoid falling into freelance scams , you must be critical in assessing whether or not the portal you’re signing up for is legit.

Here are features to look for before taking on online writing jobs:

Be wary of freelance websites with a Google review star rating of less than 3. While online ratings are ultimately subjective, they reflect the user experience that professionals and clients have for the platform.

You also want to check review sites like TechRadar or online forums like Reddit and Quora to see what other users think of freelance writing websites.

Online freelance writing jobs vary in pay range, and it’s primarily driven by the fact that clients have their specific project budgets. Some portals require businesses to offer a specific job price range, while others leave it to the client.

The best freelance writing sites have extensive job boards. This allows them to attract clients from all sectors and freelancers of different skill sets.

Check the requirements for signing up with a portal and see if you fit their eligibility. You’re better off starting small and building your portfolio rather than trying to break the big game without a solid portfolio to back it up.

The freelance writing industry is saturated with talent. And while there is a global demand to match that up, beefing up your skill set is necessary to ace the competition.

Check for platforms with built-in writing tools or knowledge bases. Do they have a blog you can subscribe to stay current with the freelance writing landscape?

Best Online Writing Sites: Our Top 3 Options [Ranked & Reviewed]

Here are our top 3 freelance writing sites, handpicked for their combined reach, user reviews, and job opportunities.

1. Upwork : Our Pick

screenshot of the Upwork homepage

Upwork is a global freelancing platform that connects businesses or startups with individual professionals. It hosts a variety of industries that include writing.

It’s a marketplace where the main currency is your skill. Housing over 12 million freelancers as of 2023, Upwork’s an attractive platform to boost your professional network too!

Key Features of Upwork

Below are features that make Upwork a powerhouse in freelancing:

  • Global Network:  Upwork is available in over 180 countries, making connecting with global clients easier.
  • All-In Mediation:  Upwork handles all the contracts, billing, and invoicing processes. This helps you focus on your craft instead of tracking all admin-related requirements before getting paid.
  • Robust Writing Job Board:  Upwork has 80 writing-related categories under its filter, giving you more options to check if your first few don’t work.
  • Upwork Connects:  A “Connect” serves as your internal currency and allows you to send client proposals or applications. Upwork’s free plan grants you 10 connects per month, while its Freelance Plus gives you up to 80 connects.
  • Top Rated Badge:  This one’s given to Upwork’s top freelancers who have built a strong reputation on the platform and consistently get positive feedback from clients. Acquiring this badge gives you access to Upwork’s exclusive features like premium support and in-house talent scout assistance.

Pros of Upwork

  • Hassle-free Onboarding:  All you need is an email address to start creating an account for free. No need for samples and exams to start searching for writing jobs.
  • Seamless Portal Interface:  Upwork has intuitive navigation that helps you sift through job listings without getting lost.
  • Location Flexibility:  Compared to some platforms that require you to be within the state or city near your client, Upwork supports fully remote jobs.

Cons of Upwork

  • High Competition:  Landing the first gig remains challenging for any new freelance writer. Clients looking for content writing services often look for a solid portfolio before hiring their freelancer.
  • Commission Fee:  Upwork takes 20% of the first $500 you bill to your clients. This can be too hefty, especially for starters with minimal projects.
  • Dispute Resolution:  Users report difficulty connecting with Upwork’s resolution team to settle payment disputes.

Upwork Income

Content writing jobs on Upwork have an average pay of $15 to $40 an hour. Some companies who want a long-term arrangement with writers pay a flat fee of $800 a month.

Final Verdict

Upwork is a great job search engine that offers freelance writing jobs globally. It can take a while to build a solid reputation and attract regular clients, but it is nonetheless the most robust platform for writing gigs that pay.

2. Blogging Pro : Runner-Up

screenshot of the Blogging Pro homepage

Blogging Pro is an easy-to-navigate job site for professional writers looking for trusted clients. Unlike most platforms that require you to create user profiles, Blogging Pro gives you total control over when and to who you want to apply.

Key Features of Blogging Pro

Here are the top features why we recommend Blogging Pro:

  • Multiple Job Setup:  Most job listings in this platform are remote, though a few require onsite arrangements. They also offer freelance, contract, or part-time setups.
  • Writing Tips & Tutorials:  Blogging Pro has quick links to articles that help you enhance your freelance work quality. Access is free with no sign-up requirement.
  • In-demand Writing Categories:  The platform only advertises writing jobs such as content writing, journalism, and copywriting. This saves you time from having to sort through vast, non-writing jobs.
  • Direct Apply:  Once you select a writing gig, you’ll get a comprehensive list of responsibilities and requirements and a snippet of the client’s background. Hitting ‘Apply for job’ leads you to the client’s website to complete the application.
  • Fast Response Time:  Blogging Pro requires clients to respond to applications within 24 to 48 hours. This guarantees you’ll get a response whether you make it or not.

Pros of Blogging Pro

  • Free to Use:  You don’t pay anything with Blogging Pro. No add-on costs, hidden fees, or cutbacks for commissions.
  • Transparent Pricing:  Most jobs in this portal provide their exact pay range. If not, their websites will, which you can access when you apply.
  • Reliable Clients:  Blogging Pro’s client list is a combination of established companies and startups with either brick-and-mortar stores or a legitimate online presence.

Cons of Blogging Pro

  • Minimal Job Updates:  Unlike bigger portals with daily job streams, Blogging Pro only updates when clients choose to advertise on their platform. They do an average of weekly updates with fewer than 20 new jobs.
  • Requires Experience:  While all positions are open to beginners, many clients indicate specific writing experience in their eligibility requirements. This can be tough to break for anyone with no portfolio to show.
  • Inconsistent Income:  Blogging Pro doesn’t set any price range guideline for clients apart from the minimum $15 requirement. It’s up to you to determine if the company’s offering a competitive price for the writing service required.

Blogging Pro Income

Blogging Pro guarantees a minimum of $15 hourly pay for writers as part of its initial agreement with clients. Some jobs, like social media writers, can pay up to $300 per project.

Blogging Pro is an excellent choice for finding freelance writing jobs covering different niches.

Its direct link to clients gives you full control of the application process and an overview of the job budget, so you won’t have to do the guesswork in finding out how much you’ll earn.

Still, it doesn’t offer many jobs, and you’ll often need to showcase proof of writing experience to land a gig.

3. Fiverr : Also Great

screenshot of the Fiverr homepage

Fiverr is the perfect platform for individuals who prefer working with other individuals instead of a large-scale company.

This website is an ideal entry-level choice since you won’t have to bid or negotiate for jobs.

You’ll also have access to a potential client or buyer’s requests, including instructions and files to assist you in delivering their expected result.

Key Features of Fiverr

Let’s look into the features we like best about Fiverr and see if it fits your ideal freelance writing website:

  • Worldwide Reach:  Fiverr is available in 190 countries, with 42% of its users based in the U.S. It also houses clients from Canada, India, and the U.K.
  • Seller Levels:  You can climb up the levels if you constantly deliver quality tasks on time.
  • Pro-verified Feature:  If you have the background and experience of a trusted writer, then Fiverr might approve you as part of their ‘Pro Services’ feature. You can charge higher and increase the potential of attracting high-paying clients.
  • Extensive Filter Customization:  Fiverr wants an ideal match for their clients, so their filters are extensive. You can consider this feature when setting up your profile, delivery timelines, price range, and writing style.
  • E-learning Products:  If you’re looking to enhance your skills, try enrolling in Fiverr’s business and technical courses led by niche experts.

Pros of Fiverr

  • Admin-free Experience:  The platform handles the admin side of things like producing invoices, promotions, transaction recording, etc.
  • Option for Early Payout:  While only available to select sellers, the feature is an advantage. It’s an advantage if you need cash immediately instead of waiting for the typical 14-day clearing period.
  • Opportunities to Broaden Skills:  Fiverr’s writing jobs range from simple content writing to more challenging gigs like technical writeups. You’ll encounter task requests you haven’t tried before that can be a great learning opportunity.

Cons of Fiverr

  • Low-paying Gigs:  While you can charge your services for up to $995 per project, only top-rated and long-time freelancers enjoy that profit. Most starters will have to settle for the low price of $5.
  • Issues with Scams:  There are reports of freelancers not getting paid by clients claiming they have yet to receive their orders. It can be difficult to dispute this unless you have complete and detailed communications with the client.
  • Commission Fee:  Fiverr takes 20% off your earning regardless of your seller level or service cost. If you earn $5, you’ll only receive $4 as your take-home pay.

Fiverr Income

Your Fiverr income depends on the number of services you deliver. You can price it from $5 per project up to $995.

Fiverr’s a great place for freelancers who want to start small, minus all the hassle of promoting their services. By setting up an account, your profile’s automatically pooled under your chosen gig category.

It’s entry-level at best, which might not be the best option for advanced writers with considerable writing experience.

Notable Mentions: Other Writing Sites To Check Out

If you’re looking for alternative options other than our top 3 picks, you can try out these freelance writing sites:

4. Contently  – Best for Experienced Writers

screenshot of the contently homepage

Contently is for expert freelance writers looking at landing a gig with big companies. Some of their clients include Coca-Cola, Dell, Walmart, and Google.

Unlike the other platforms on our list, you don’t apply for a writing job to be a part of their team. Their in-house talent scouts choose writers from all around the web and invite them for an interview.

That being said, having a  solid creative platform  that showcases your diverse writing portfolio is an essential factor to be considered for any of their gigs.

Why is Contently a Great Option?

Landing a gig at Contently is a surefire way to skyrocket your freelance career. You can add your experience with them to your portfolio along with the brands or companies you worked with.

Best of all, you can  negotiate your rate . If you think they’re offering lower than your regular rate, you can demand higher pay.

Drawbacks to Contently

Its obvious drawback comes from the fact that it isn’t for beginners. Contently only contacts specialists with years of experience whose consistent portfolio speaks for their work quality.

Contently Income

Contently has a proprietary rate sheet that dictates the price range options for their projects. While we can’t divulge the specifics, online writers share earnings between $300 and $1,200 per piece.

5. Writers Work  – Best Pooled Writing Jobs

screenshot of the Writers Work homepage

Writers Work is a paid freelance writing platform that offers real-time data on writing gigs worldwide. They offer a lifetime subscription of $47 or a monthly option of $15.

It’s an excellent platform allowing you to do all your writing tasks in it. It has a built-in text editor and work tracker feature to help you organize your workload and set writing goals.

Writers Work also has one of the most diverse types of writing requests, such as  writing stories for magazines or even fishing equipment reviews.

Why is Writers Work a Great Option?

One thing that Writers Work does well is its writing-only job board. You won’t find other popular gigs like graphic design or video production in its pool.

It’s a great platform for getting a constant stream of gigs you can easily filter by categories like finance, tech, and entertainment.

Drawbacks to Writers Work

There’s high competition in this platform, which may deter freelancers who are looking at quick payments. While there are varied writing options, landing those high-paying gigs requires skill and experience.

Writers Work Income

Writers get paid between $20 to $65 an hour. Other projects offer a fixed rate of $100 per project.

6. iWriter  – Best for Tiered Writing Gigs

screenshot of the iwriter homepage

iWriter is an excellent platform that offers opportunities for writers to upgrade their skills and earning potential while writing more.

The platform offers four writing levels – Standard, Premium, Elite, and Elite Plus. Accessing higher levels mean higher-paying gigs.

We found iWriter to have a diverse niche in terms of topics and ideas , with clients providing specific writing instructions, including required keywords and formatting.

Why is iWriter a Great Option?

It’s easy to join iWriter as a freelancer. You’ll only need to pass two 200-word writing tests to complete the registration. Once done, you can start using the platform to find gigs.

Happy clients also have the option to give you tips for a job well done, helping you increase your income. You also have the opportunity to get paid weekly or biweekly, with a minimum of $20 in earnings.

Drawbacks to iWriter

A significant drawback of iWriter is its steep commission. The platform takes 35% of your total earnings, which is higher than other platforms in our list charge.

Rising through the ranks may also be challenging for new writers as you must deliver 30 articles with a minimum of a 4-star rating before leveling up a step.

iWriter income

Depending on your writing tier, you can earn between $1.25 to $260 in iWriter. There’s a fixed price assigned to word counts across the board, which varies in level.

7. WriterAccess  – Best for Long-term Writing Job

screenshot of the WriterAccess homepage

WriterAccess is home to over 40,000 brands, all looking for quality writers. Many freelancers who start working with the platform often receive repeat orders from companies, agencies, and small businesses they’ve worked with.

This platform’s an excellent starting point for skilled writers looking for a freelance job with the potential for long-term employment.

Why is WriterAccess a Great Option?

WriterAccess is excellent for  building a freelance writing career  with reliable clients. You can get hired for all sorts of jobs, from writing blogs to writing short stories .

The platform screens all interested writers. If you pass, you’re automatically given a star rating, unlocking jobs within that level. The higher the rating, the bigger the pay.

Drawbacks to WriterAccess

While joining WriterAccess is free, getting approved can be a challenge. You must provide at least two public web pages as sample works on top of your general and industry experience.

WriterAccess income

All writers are paid 70% of what the client pays for each project.

8. ProBlogger  – Best for Blog Writing

screenshot of the Problogger homepage

ProBlogger is a must-try platform if you’re into SEO writing and blogging. Most of its job postings are from website owners who want to outsource the writing part of their content marketing strategy.

This platform is ideal if you enjoy writing across different topics and are fine communicating directly with the client or managing your workload.

Why is ProBlogger a Great Option?

ProBlogger is great because of its real-time job listings and quality clients who pay well for your services. Joining the platform is easy, and you don’t have to pay anything.

All you need is to register to create your online resume. From here, you can bookmark jobs and create job alerts to get up to speed with the most recent job ads.

Drawbacks to ProBlogger

ProBlogger’s quality clientele attracts the most talents, so expect tough competition. The fact that these clients pay $80 to post their job ads on the platform means they’re willing to pay, but they can also be picky in hiring freelance writers.

ProBlogger income

Writers earn from $25 to $200 per piece, depending on the complexity and research work required. In-house or full-time bloggers earn between $45,000 to $90,000 annually.

Is online writing too tough for starters? Here are alternative options to earn money online.

Tips to Land Writing Gigs on Freelance Websites

  • best freelance writing sites in 2023

As a freelance writer, finding the right platform to showcase your skills and connect with potential clients can be a daunting task. With so many options available, it’s important to know which sites are worth your time and effort.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to expand your client base, we’ve rounded up the 20 best freelance writing sites for serious writers. From job boards to content marketplaces, these platforms offer a range of opportunities for writers to find high-quality, paying gigs. So, grab your laptop and get ready to take your writing career to the next level!

Certain platforms will be easier than others to jump into and begin making money, as some are more competitive than others or have a more rigorous vetting process for freelancers. Here are some tips to help you land writing gigs as you get started:

  • Create a strong profile. Your profile is often the first thing potential clients will see, so make sure it showcases your skills and experience. Include a clear and concise bio, relevant writing samples, and any relevant certifications or education.
  • Be selective with the freelance jobs you apply for. It’s important to apply for gigs that align with your skills and interests. Don’t waste your time on low-paying or irrelevant jobs. Instead, focus on applying for gigs that you're qualified for and genuinely interested in.
  • Customize your proposals. Don't send the same generic proposal to every job. Take the time to read the job description and tailor your proposal to the specific project and client. Show that you’ve done your research and understand what the client needs.
  • Highlight your unique selling points. What sets you apart from other writers? Maybe you specialize in a specific niche, have extensive experience in a certain industry, or have won writing awards. Whatever it is, make sure to highlight it in your proposals and on your profile.
  • Follow up. Don't be afraid to follow up on proposals or applications. A polite email or message can show that you’re serious about the job and can help you stand out from other candidates.
  • Deliver quality work. Once you land a gig, make sure to deliver high-quality work that meets or exceeds the client’s expectations. This can lead to repeat business and positive reviews, which can help you land more gigs in the future.

By following these tips, you can increase your chances of landing high-quality writing gigs on the best freelance writing sites. Remember to stay patient and persistent, and don't be afraid to put yourself out there!

20 best freelance writing sites in 2023

It’s possible to create a full-time income with freelance writing if you’re dedicated to creating high-quality work and willing to put in some upfront work. Our advice is to get started with one or two platforms to feel out which ones will work best for you, and don’t get discouraged if any particular platform or project doesn’t work out.

Here are our picks for the best freelance writing sites in 2023:

Upwork freelance writing jobs

Upwork is a marketplace that connects freelancers with companies and individuals looking for freelance talent. From writing and translation to design and creative, there are many types of jobs available for hire. You simply bid on the jobs you’re interested in working on, complete with a proposal where you describe why you’re the best person for the job and set your desired rate. If you’re selected, you then complete the work according to the client’s specifications and get paid through the platform.

To get started on Upwork, create a profile where you highlight your skills, your portfolio of work, and your ideal pay rate. Search for jobs in the Talent Marketplace, submit proposals, get a contract on winning bids, and check off the steps to complete the work. Clients may choose to pay you for reaching certain milestones during the course of the project, or they pay you when the job is done. They can also submit feedback, which helps you secure future jobs and build lasting relationships with new clients. A word of advice as you get started: Get your feet wet with a few simple jobs where you earn positive feedback before demanding higher rates, as Upwork is a highly competitive platform with thousands of skilled writers and other professionals.

  • Pricing: It’s free to join Upwork, build a profile, search for work, and post your own projects. Upwork charges a service fee based on your earnings, with a sliding scale that rewards long-term client relationships. The Freelancer Plus upgrade gives you more advanced tools to market your services and submit attention-grabbing proposals.

2. Best Writing

Best Writing freelance writing jobs

A relatively new platform, Best Writing got its start in 2020 when two friends decided writers needed a better way to find great work. Subscribe to the Best Writing newsletter, and you’ll receive weekly emails packed with hand-picked writing opportunities. The site aggregates writing jobs from online job portals, social media, newsletters, and selected partners, serving up everything from remote freelance gigs to full-time positions.

Best Writing is also a talent marketplace; for a small fee, you can gain access to a daily newsletter with the latest writing jobs and create a public writer profile. If you’re looking to be more proactive and make sure you don’t miss out on an opportunity, the Writer Membership might be the way to go. Because Best Writing is a newer platform, there may be less competition, although that could change as the platform grows — so get in while the getting’s good.

  • Pricing: Free to subscribe to the weekly newsletter, browse jobs, and apply on external sites; Writer Membership is $9 per month or $90 annually.

3. Superpath Jobs

Superpath Jobs

Another larger platform with thousands of writers, Superpath Jobs is an online jobs aggregator that caters to content strategists, creators, editors, and freelance writers. Browse jobs by category, location, company, and more — and apply externally to any positions of interest.

While Superpath may look like just another job site, there’s more to it: Not only are you only seeing jobs in your desired field, but the platform also has a Slack community to which writers can apply to join. Once approved, you can connect with other like-minded creators, share tips and tricks, and support one another on your writing journeys. Additional tools like a blog, a podcast, and a regularly updated salary report keep you in the know.

  • Pricing: Free to create a profile and post your resume. You decide whether to make your profile visible to employers.

Draft freelance writing jobs

Draft offers clients quality content writers on demand; for you as a freelancer, it offers you unlimited work that matches your interests, availability, and skills. Once you’re approved to write for Draft, you can view available projects on your dashboard, claim anything you want to work on, complete the work, and upload it onto the project portal. Clients can then submit feedback or request revisions, as well as set people as preferred writers if they like their work (this is what you want, so you can get first dibs on projects).

To get started as a writer, you’ll need to apply on the Draft site and complete a test writing project. If you pass, you’ll have access to the project dashboard, where you can not only claim projects but also track any projects you’ve claimed and completed. Writers get paid weekly via direct deposit and can track their payments through the platform.

  • Pricing: Free to join as a writer once you’re approved; Draft charges a small payment processing fee that gets subtracted from your weekly payment.

5. ProBlogger

ProBlogger freelance writing jobs

Over 300,000 bloggers rely on ProBlogger as their go-to resource for blogging education and resources, from blog posts and podcasts to courses in blog creation and growth. Blogger Darren Rowse launched the site after turning his blogging hobby into a paying profession, and now he’s paying it forward in an effort to help other bloggers make money doing what they love.

If you’re serious about starting a blog and turning it into a money maker, ProBlogger is the place to go for blogging advice, trends, and in-depth tutorials. There’s also a Facebook community where you can connect with fellow bloggers. To get started with ProBlogger, add your email to their subscriber list to receive blogging hacks right in your inbox.

  • Pricing: Free to join; only pay for additional courses and other resources you want.

6. Textbroker

Textbroker freelance writing jobs

Like Draft, Textbroker provides quality, SEO-driven content of all kinds, including blog articles, product descriptions, advertising copy, translation services, and more. Clients include small businesses, e-commerce websites, publishing houses, publicly traded companies, and more. As a writer, you’ll be part of an established community connecting authors and clients where you can showcase your talents and expertise in your niche. You choose when and how much to write based on your interests and needs.

It’s free to register as an author on Textbroker, and you can earn more on projects based on the quality of your work, and the helpful Textbroker team provides feedback to help you hone your skills. Weekly payouts make it easy to access your earnings. To get started, complete your author registration and activate your account; you will then need to submit a short writing sample and connect your payment method.

  • Pricing: Free to register

Contena freelance writing jobs

Contena is an invite-only online program and a suite of job-search tools aimed at helping budding writers land freelance writing and remote work. The site says that its self-paced program has helped its members earn millions from remote writing. Yes, it’s a membership, so the program isn’t free; pricing isn’t readily available on the site, but this review — based on the writer’s experience in trying out the onboarding process — states that membership costs $497 for one year or $997 for two years.

While there are many positive reviews of Contena, the same writer above states these reviews are driven by affiliate income. However, the site offers a 30-day guarantee that should put your mind at ease, and the online course could be worthwhile if you’re just getting started with freelance writing. Our best advice? Do some thorough vetting before shelling out any money, but don’t be afraid to invest in your education if the material is worthwhile.

  • Pricing: Reportedly $497 per year

8. LinkedIn

Freelance writing jobs on LinkedIn

You may be familiar with LinkedIn as a place to create a professional profile and connect with colleagues in your industry. However, it’s also a job marketplace where you can upload your resume and browse job listings. As you apply to roles of interest, LinkedIn may recommend adding certain skills to your profile, such as search engine optimization or WordPress. You can also take quizzes to have skills badges added to your profile, helping you stand out from the crowd.

Having your resume ready to send can be helpful when you’re applying to multiple jobs at once; jobs marked as “EasyApply” let you apply directly on the platform. Be sure to build out your LinkedIn profile to highlight your achievements, request recommendations from people you know, and showcase your best professional self.

  • Pricing: Free; Premium membership starts at $29.99 per month, with access to more advanced career tools.

9. Writer Access

Writer Access freelance writing jobs

More than 40,000 brands use Writer Access to connect with freelancers and scale their content marketing. That means as a writer, you have access to a vast array of companies looking for quality content of all kinds, from technical writing to presentations and white papers.

When you apply to write for Writer Access, expect a thorough vetting, as the site hand-reviews your work and experience and only invites the best freelancers to move through the screening process. Once you’re approved, you’ll go through an onboarding program in which you’ll develop your CV and profile alongside the Writer Access team. From there, you can start taking advantage of cool perks like free stock images, portfolio promotion, content marketing tools, and a ticket to their annual content marketing conference.

  • Pricing: Free to apply

The site offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee and helpful customer support reps, ensuring you’ll have a great user experience. Be sure to check out the career coaching services, webinars, and other resources to put your best foot forward with potential employers.

  • Pricing: $9.95 for a week; $59.95 for a year.

With no membership fees, a sleek user interface, consistent payments, and a supportive writer community at your fingertips, Compose.ly can be a great source of regular income. Work as much or as little as you like, and only choose projects that sound like a great fit.

Compose.ly’s rigorous selection process could mean you will have less competition for jobs. However, you’ll need to pass the application process, which includes a brief assessment, to begin accepting jobs on the platform. Compose.ly pays bimonthly, so while not as regular as some of the other platforms on our list, it’s still a great source of income. To get started, create an account and apply to be a writer.

  • Pricing: Free

12. Scribly

Scribly freelance writing jobs

Founded by ex-copywriters, Scribly is a content marketing agency whose team knows what it’s like to work as freelancers. That’s why they’ve created a platform designed to empower freelancers to do the work they love while getting paid fairly and on time. Clients pay a monthly fee to tap into content creation, content strategy, and social media management services from a pool of quality, native-English writers.

To get started as a writer, you’ll need to send a message to the Scribly team telling them a little about yourself. Once you take that step, you’ll get a message letting you know they’ve received your message — so you may not have the instant gratification of knowing where you stand with Scribly. However, should you make it through the initial hiring steps, you’ll have access to flexible, scalable income you can earn whenever and wherever you want.

  • Pricing: No pricing information is listed but appears to be free for freelancers.

There’s something for every kind of writer, editor, illustrator, and designer on the platform, making it one of the most versatile freelance opportunities on our list.

You can apply to be a writer or editor on the platform, and should you make it through the selection process, you will then complete an assessment to determine if you’re a good fit. The Urban Writers then allows approved creatives to submit proposals on posted jobs. If you’re new to the platform, it could be more challenging to get assignments; however, the platform is supportive and includes a Slack community where you can pick up tips and advice from seasoned writers.

50 Freelance Jobs Websites to Find Your Next Remote Gig

Our readers always come first.

The content on DollarSprout includes links to our advertising partners. When you read our content and click on one of our partners’ links, and then decide to complete an offer — whether it’s downloading an app, opening an account, or some other action — we may earn a commission from that advertiser, at no extra cost to you.

Our ultimate goal is to educate and inform, not lure you into signing up for certain offers. Compensation from our partners may impact what products we cover and where they appear on the site, but does not have any impact on the objectivity of our reviews or advice.

The gig economy is here and thriving, and there are countless sites that promise to increase your monthly income. But which side hustles and freelance jobs are actually worth your time? Read our guide on the best freelance job sites to find out.

Our mission at DollarSprout is to help readers improve their financial lives, and we regularly partner with companies that share that same vision. If a purchase or signup is made through one of our Partners’ links, we may receive compensation for the referral. Learn more here .

Doesn’t the life of a freelancer sound amazing?

Freelance experts set their own hours, job locations, and prices. They can work from home, on the beach, or while on vacation.

While juggling remote freelance jobs isn’t for everyone, it certainly comes with a few undeniable perks. And when it comes to income, you may even find that working as a freelancer pays more money per hour than your typical entry-level office job.

If you have the stamina to work for multiple clients and the self-discipline to meet deadlines, then life as a freelancer could be your calling.

The Most Popular Freelance Specializations

What Does It Mean to be a Freelancer?

Freelancing means you work for several companies on a flexible schedule instead of for a single employer at preset hours. Freelancing jobs can either replace your full-time income or just supplement it.

If you enjoy your job or like working in an office, then freelance work may be your answer to earning more money in your spare time. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a way out of your current job or want to be in control of your time and schedule, then you may just be destined for the freelance life.

Top 5 Freelancing Sites

If you’re new to freelancing, then you may not know what jobs suit your skills. Even beginners can find lucrative jobs and gigs online to work from home . If you’re unsure where to start, then here are some great freelance job sites to scope out.

Keep in mind that it can cost to find quality jobs, but the payoff is the opportunity to find consistent freelance work in your area of expertise.

1. FlexJobs

FlexJobs is a trustworthy site filled with freelance jobs in every niche. While it comes with a small monthly membership fee to view the jobs, you never have to worry about scam offerings on this site. Real people test every single listing on FlexJobs before allowing it on the platform, which saves you time in the long run. Learn more in our FlexJobs Review .

2. Freelancer

Freelancer is another freelance job site packed full of opportunities perfect for launching your remote career. The platform is free to view and you can apply to a maximum of eight jobs per month. If you want to bid on more projects than that, you’ll need to sign up for a paid membership. For each project you complete, Freelancer keeps a 10% job fee or $5, whichever is more.

Upwork connects freelancers with hundreds of thousands of clients in numerous niches. From photography to customer service to interior design, there’s hardly a limit on the types of jobs you can find on Upwork. Like other freelance job sites, Upwork charges a fee for its services. Expect to pay up to 20% of your earnings to the platform on each job you complete.

4. SolidGigs

SolidGigs offers an interesting business model for connecting freelancers with clients. Instead of sifting through job sites in your spare time hoping to land a respectable client, SolidGigs sends job lists to your email for a monthly membership fee of $19. If you secure at least $500 worth of jobs every month, that works out to less than 4% in fees. That’s far less than most job platforms these days.

You can get your first month with SolidGigs for only $2 and give it a test run to see if the leads are worth it. If you don’t like it, just cancel your membership before you’re charged the first $19 payment.

Yet another massive freelance job platform, Fiverr doesn’t disappoint when it comes to finding freelancing jobs. Sign up for a free account on Fiverr and look through the services that others offer. You can get some great ideas and craft your own services and pricing around your competition.

Fiverr is a bit different from other freelance job platforms. Instead of applying to and bidding on jobs, you create a service page, called a “gig,” for clients to find you. Choose your price or offer multiple price points for different levels of service. You’ll pay 20% of your earnings to Fiverr for using the platform.

Pay: $50 to $500+ per article

From short blog posts to in-depth articles to online reviews, there are boundless opportunities as a freelance writer. With the endless hoards of content on the Internet, freelance writers have a wide selection of clients to choose from. There are freelance jobs available to write about personal finance, self-care, parenting, DIY and crafting, and so much more.

If you’ve written papers in school, opinion pieces on social media, or detailed responses on forums, or you’ve taken online writing courses , then there’s probably a place for you in the freelance writing world.

If freelance writing sounds like something you’d like to do, start by creating your own online portfolio. This could be in the form of a media package you send to potential clients, a list of writing samples you’ve already published online, or a personal blog with your own written stories. Proofreading

Pay: $10 – $45 per hour

A freelance proofreader spends time reading and correcting anything from new book drafts to court documents.

You don’t need a degree in English to land high-paying proofreading jobs. However, you do need to prove your skills and work toward perfecting your own spelling and grammar mistakes. It takes a strong understanding of the English language and attention to detail to be a successful proofreader.

Caitlin Pyle is a freelance proofreader who started out in the profession earning $43,000 per year while proofreading from home on a part-time schedule. She found a lucrative niche proofreading for court reporters and now teaches others how to do the same.

Whether you’re an easy-going native English speaker or a math whiz who enjoys helping students study and complete homework assignments, there’s probably a freelance tutoring position that needs your skills. There are many topics where people need tutors, and it’s not only in academics.

While academic tutoring is the easiest area to find jobs in, it’s not the only option. Market your skills locally and offer to tutor in couponing, golf, horseback riding, or any other area of expertise you enjoy teaching.

The nice thing about freelance tutoring jobs is that you can find them both online and in your local area. If working on the computer is not something you want to do, then set up local tutoring appointments to get out and meet new people. The main requirement for tutoring is that you know your subject well and you know how to teach it to others so they’ll understand.

Virtual assistant.

Pay: $19 – $25 per hour

Being a virtual assistant (VA) is one of the most flexible freelance jobs online. Nearly any remote assistance offered to an online business on a per piece or hourly basis falls under the wing of a virtual assistant.

While not every business hires a VA to do everyday tasks, that doesn’t mean the demand for an online assistant isn’t there. From managing social media pages to scheduling client meetings to managing a business’ website updates, there are countless services you can offer.

Don’t get discouraged if your online expertise lies in only one or two areas. Chances are that you’ll find virtual assistant companies or clients who need your skills without the extra bells and whistles. There are hundreds of services that you could offer, but you only need one or two to get your VA business going.

Gina Horkey successfully launched her own virtual assistant business and turned it into a seven-figure enterprise. If you’re already inspired by the thought of this freelance job, you can look into her VA Foundations course that teaches you how to do the same.

Transcription

Pay: $10 – $36 per hour

Transcribers listen to audio files and put them in writing. Common types of files include news interviews, medical appointments, conference calls, podcasts, and more. While there are some online tools that help transcribe audio to text, nothing is as accurate as a real person.

There is definitely a learning curve when it comes to transcription jobs , but the main requirements include good listening skills and fast typing. While there are tools to help with spelling along the way, it’s still good to have a strong understanding of whatever language you’re transcribing, including excellent grammar and spelling.

Data entry is not for everyone. However, if you can perform simple tasks quickly and don’t mind the somewhat monotonous work, then this could be the money-making opportunity for you.

All you need to get started in this field is a computer, an Internet connection, and some basic skills. Attention to detail, organization, and typing are a few skills you’ll be expected to have. You should also know your way around Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and all Google equivalents (Sheets, Docs, and Slides).

When it comes to freelance jobs in data entry , there are plenty of scams or companies that pay next to nothing. Be diligent about the jobs you apply to, and make sure the company is credible.

Graphic design

Pay: $25 – $50 per hour

Not every website owner has the talent to create beautiful graphics. In fact, businesses can end up failing if their image doesn’t align with the type of client they want to attract. That’s where graphic designers come in.

Printables, Pinterest images, and advertisements are three common areas that require graphic designers. While not every business hires this task out to a freelancer, it’s still a commonly sought after need. Graphic designers need the ability to use tools like Photoshop, Canva, and other programs. You’ll also need an artistic eye to create beautiful designs.

You don’t need a degree to become a graphic designer . If you have an eye for design but have yet to master the skills it takes to make money in the industry, you can easily learn the skills you need to fill your knowledge gaps. For example, you could take a free Graphic Design Basics course on Skillshare. A simple course can help you decide if freelance graphic design jobs are a good fit for you.

Earning money as a freelance photographer by taking pictures for graduating seniors, prom-goers, families, weddings, and other special events. The easiest way to get started is to reach out to friends, family members, and other connections to let them know about your services.

Another way to make money with photography is to sell your images as stock photos. Sites like Shutterstock pay photographers to take pictures, tag them with descriptive keywords, and allow people to license them for commercial and business use. In return, you receive credit and a commission for every license sold. The more in-demand images you post for sale, the more you can earn.

As a freelance writer, you can choose to only accept projects or promote yourself for gigs that ... [+] resonate with your values and previous expertise, making you more in-demand

When you're searching for a cake recipe on Google for an upcoming celebration, what do you click on? A blog from an avid foodie or pâtissier?

Or how about your regular scroll through social media this morning? In between swipes on your phone, how many times did you notice helpful, informative content for advancing your career, on LinkedIn or Facebook?

Or when planning your vacation for this summer, how often did you use travel blogs and reviews from trusted sites such as TripAdvisor to inform your decisions regarding your accommodation and nearby attractions?

In 2024, the cliched term, "content is king," has perhaps never been more accurate.

The content marketing industry was estimated to be worth 72 billion in 2023, with projections reaching a staggering 107 billion by 2026. Content marketing, predominantly online, infiltrates more aspects of our daily lives than we realize.

And between videos, infographics, reels, shorts, blogs, and other forms of content, a major part of the content we consume is in the form of written content.

We read to be informed so we can develop ourselves personally and professionally, or to be entertained so we can have the "inside scoop." Whatever your reasons, behind the words you read, there is almost always a strategic intent: content marketing.

What Is Content Marketing?

Content marketing is when online materials are created and shared which do not explicitly promote a product or service per se, but generate interest in a product or service from a target audience. Content marketing can take on different forms, such as social media posts, blogs, and articles.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

To develop articles, reports, blogs, and similar written content requires the expertise of a content writing professional. For this reason, many companies and businesses choose to either hire their own in-house content marketing team, or, as is more common recently, hire an external professional such as a freelance writer to perform this work on a project-by-project basis.

Just run a quick search of freelance writing jobs on Google, and you'll notice a plethora of writing gigs spanning from SEO copywriting, to social media copywriting, to even writing as a freelance journalist for mainstream and niche publications.

When content is king and the industry is reaching a market worth of $107 billion, there has never ... [+] been a better time to be a freelance writer

Where To Find Freelance Writing Jobs

When looking for work as a freelance writer, it's important to keep your options open and explore various platforms, as opportunities for writing projects can occur from one place or a variety of sources.

Some excellent places to find freelance writing jobs include:

  • Digital marketing agencies
  • LinkedIn (not only the job board, but through networking and establishing a strong LinkedIn presence and personal brand)
  • The Dots (if UK-based)
  • Search Google for the term, "looking for writers" or similar, to see what agencies, companies, or individuals are posting adverts for the freelance writing jobs/projects

15 Freelance Writing Jobs Hiring In 2024

Here are 15 freelance writing jobs that you might find of interest. Bear in mind that some may be more niche than others, so you may need to get a little more creative about where you find the remote freelance writing opportunities:

  • Informal, conversational blogs
  • Articles for journals, magazines, and other forms of journalistic writing
  • Copywriting
  • Ghostwriting
  • Technical writing
  • Curriculum design and writing
  • White paper writing
  • Email copywriting
  • Social media copywriting
  • Grant writing
  • SEO writing
  • Business and financial report writing
  • Case studies
  • Resume writing
  • Product description writing

When looking for freelance writing jobs, you should also consider writing on topics that you are already familiar with. This makes it easy for you to establish a portfolio of your work and showcase to clients, and it makes it much easier for you to beat the competition for a freelance writing project, as your prospective client will trust that you have expertise relevant to your topic.

For example, if you have a track record of winning grants for non-profit organizations, you can tap into your skill set and offer your services as a freelance grant writer. You might even decide to narrow your focus even more and only accept projects that resonate with you, in a specific charitable sector.

It's essential to remember that with the introduction of AI (artificial intelligence) much has changed when it comes to creative industries such as freelance writing, and although in some cases, it can be a good thing (as it augments your work and helps improve the quality of your writing output), in some cases, it can cast a negative shadow over your reputation as a freelance writer.

Always ensure that you never copy what a chatbot has produced, word for word. It will have a robotic, unnatural way of speaking and will look too similar to other obvious AI-generated material, not to mention the occasional grammatical error. This is cheating your clients' of their money in hiring you, as they paid you to use your expertise; they could have easily generated AI content themselves.

Using tools such as ChatGPT or other AI-powered writing tools should only be used to augment your work, and never to replace it.

Therefore when writing as a freelance writer, approach AI tools with caution, using them as assistants for your research, structure, and some of the content of the article. But ultimately, it's down to you to humanize and harmonize all elements so that the final piece is top-quality work.

The content marketing industry is wide open and waiting for writers like you.

With widespread AI usage, it's even more critical for freelance writers to stand out and carve their ... [+] personal brand with a quality portfolio of work

Are you ready to be the brains behind the next blog, article, or informative copy someone sees, that could transform their life?

The National Association for the Self-Employed’s membership has grown dramatically over the last few years, says Keith Hall, the group's president and CEO. And while that growth has slowed since its COVID-era peak in 2022, he thinks flexible work is here to stay.

The boom in self-employment started when "a lot of people had to do it because of COVID. They didn't choose to do it; they had to do it," Hall says. "Many others saw and learned and read that you can do this. You don't need to be tied to the desk in corporate America."

Below is NerdWallet’s 2024 list of the 10 best U.S. metro areas for freelancers and the self-employed. Our analysis used recent metro-area data from the U.S. Census Bureau and state-level data from the Tax Foundation. The top metro areas are those where a significant percentage of the workforce is self-employed already, rent is relatively affordable, unemployment is low, worker mobility is high and state income taxes are relatively low.

How much do you need?

with Fundera by NerdWallet

We’ll start with a brief questionnaire to better understand the unique needs of your business.

Once we uncover your personalized matches, our team will consult you on the process moving forward.

Key findings

Of our top 10 cities, Bridgeport-Stamford-Danbury, Connecticut, and North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, Florida, have the largest percentages of the workforce that are already self-employed (8.5% and 8.2%, respectively). The median of all metro areas in our dataset is 5.3%.

Housing affordability continues to benefit communities like Chattanooga and Knoxville, Tennessee; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and Portland, Maine — all places in which more than half of renters spend less than 30% of their income on rent.

Tennessee, Florida and Texas all have no state income tax, which can keep a portion of income in self-employed workers’ pockets. That said, “It's rare when I personally hear an individual relocating states just because of the tax code,” Hall says.

Columbus, Ohio, was boosted by a significant increase in the number of people moving to the city for work between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023. While those people weren’t necessarily freelancers, we use this data point to better understand economic vibrancy.

Identify your self-employment goals when considering a move

What might self-employment look like for you? That depends on what you hope to get out of it.

1. Desired industry

Though some industries have shifted broadly toward remote work, others still benefit from proximity.

Brian Rood, a certified financial planner and owner of Artisan Financial Planning, knows that firsthand: He spent 27 years playing trumpet in the Kansas City Symphony before shifting to financial planning and now works primarily with artists.

In highly specialized fields like the performing arts, “you really do go where the work is,” Rood says. That might mean an industry-specific location, like New York or Los Angeles, or a small city where you landed an orchestra job and then built a network of students and professional contacts.

Seth Hodes, co-founder and managing partner at Able Wealth Management, also works primarily with artists and creatives. He says his clients often move from creative agencies to tech companies to freelance portfolios and then back again based on what opportunities arise. Living in regions that have active job markets and lots of opportunities in their industries helps facilitate such mobility.

“The artist freelancer has always been adaptable,” Hodes says. “It’s a grind out there — you’re going to have to survive and work up a certain kind of cultural capital.”

2. Financial goals

Self-employed workers typically need to set aside 25% to 30% of their income for tax payments .

Next, Rood adapts the 50/30/20 budget to each client; the budget is a framework that recommends spending 50% of your income on expenses, 30% on “wants” and 20% on savings. “It’s a little high on the first parts and a little low on the savings,” he says, but it's a useful jumping-off point.

Rood encourages self-employed clients to have a larger-than-average emergency fund. For some performing artists, he recommends six to 12 months of living expenses.

That math can get difficult when the cost of living is high, and it can tempt people to move, especially if they can take work with them or are scaling back on hours.

When his clients leave a high-cost-of-living city, Rood says, “it’s because they either are going to retire, and so they want to go somewhere cheaper and they don't need the work, or the rat race is too much and they want to do something else.”

Hall says he’s seen lots of older Americans strike out on their own, too. If your freelance work is a transition step out of full-time work, you may lean toward the place where you want to spend your retirement .

3. Identity, safety and values

Self-employment can afford you the freedom to live in a place for personal reasons, not just professional or financial ones.

For some, self-employment may support a move that lets them live more safely. According to a 2022 survey from the National Center for Transgender Equality, 5% of trans people had moved out of state due to laws targeting their community and 47% of respondents had thought about it.

And Hall says family ties and hometown memories are common reasons for relocation.

“We do hear a lot from NASE members and from small-business owners moving to a different community,” Hall says. “Maybe they grew up in a small city when they were younger and they had the need to go to the big city, because that's where the jobs were. Now they're going back home.”

Hodes says he works with his clients to find harmony between their financial goals and how they want to live their lives more broadly.

"You have to plan for the future, but it has to be a balance," Hodes says. "Don't sacrifice too much in the present."

Methodology

To create the Best Cities for Freelancers and Self-Employed Workers 2024 list, NerdWallet pulled data for major U.S. metropolitan areas from the U.S. Census Bureau. We also pulled state tax rates from the Tax Foundation and calculated the tax rate for a household earning the median U.S. household income. We weighted the impact of each factor depending on how important we felt that factor would be in the potential financial success of a freelancer. We excluded metro areas for which there was negative or no Job-to-Job Flows Census data.

NerdWallet’s analysis includes data from the following sources:

U.S. Census 2022 American Community Survey data for the unemployment rate, percentage of people in Census-designated metro areas who identified as self-employed in non-incorporated businesses, and percentage of renters in a Census-designated metro area who spend less than 30% of their household income on rent.

U.S. Census Q4 2022 and Q4 2023 Job-to-Job Explorer data.

The 2024 state tax rate for the median U.S. household (which earned $74,580 in 2023, according to Census data), according to the Tax Foundation.

Man or bear? Hypothetical question sparks conversation about women's safety

Women explain why they would feel safer encountering a bear in the forest than a man they didn't know. the hypothetical has sparked a broader discussion about why women fear men..

online assignment freelancer

If you were alone in the woods, would you rather encounter a bear or a man? Answers to that hypothetical question have sparked a debate about why the vast majority say they would feel more comfortable choosing a bear.

The topic has been hotly discussed for weeks as men and women chimed in with their thoughts all over social media.

Screenshot HQ , a TikTok account, started the conversation, asking a group of women whether they would rather run into a man they didn't know or a bear in the forest. Out of the seven women interviewed for the piece, only one picked a man.

"Bear. Man is scary," one of the women responds.

A number of women echoed the responses given in the original video, writing in the comments that they, too, would pick a bear over a man. The hypothetical has people split, with some expressing their sadness over the state of the world and others cracking jokes. Some men were flabbergasted.

Here's what we know.

A bear is the safer choice, no doubt about it, many say

There were a lot of responses, more than 65,000, under the original post. Many wrote that they understood why the women would choose a bear.

"No one’s gonna ask me if I led the bear on or give me a pamphlet on bear attack prevention tips," @celestiallystunning wrote.

@Brennduhh wrote: "When I die leave my body in the woods, the wolves will be gentler than any man."

"I know a bear's intentions," another woman wrote. "I don't know a man's intentions. no matter how nice they are."

Other TikTok users took it one step further, posing the hypothetical question to loved ones. Meredith Steele, who goes by @babiesofsteele , asked her husband last week whether he would rather have their daughter encounter a bear or a man in the woods. Her husband said he "didn't like either option" but said he was leaning toward the bear.

"Maybe it's a friendly bear," he says.

Diana, another TikTok user , asked her sister-in-law what she would choose and was left speechless.

"I asked her the question, you know, just for giggles. She was like, 'You know, I would rather it be a bear because if the bear attacks me, and I make it out of the woods, everybody’s gonna believe me and have sympathy for me," she said. "But if a man attacks me and I make it out, I’m gonna spend my whole life trying to get people to believe me and have sympathy for me.'"

Bear vs. man debate stirs the pot, woman and some men at odds

The hypothetical has caused some tension, with some women arguing that men will never truly understand what it's like to be a woman or the inherent dangers at play.

Social media users answered this question for themselves, producing memes, spoken word poetry and skits in the days and weeks since.

So, what would you choose?

Milwaukee council dispute taken up at committee after alderwoman says Black women sidelined

online assignment freelancer

The Milwaukee Common Council's most powerful committee Monday recommended against changing council rules to require that each member be assigned to at least two committees ― a vote that followed an alderwoman's allegation that Black women on the council were being sidelined.

Ald. Andrea Pratt said Monday that her appointment to solely one committee by Common Council President José G. Pérez is out of step with past council practice. She sponsored the legislation that was before the Steering and Rules Committee on Monday.

"While we have been assured this decision was a deliberative one done in consultation with other members, it falls tragically short of being equitable," she told the Steering and Rules Committee, which is made up of the chairs of the other seven council committees and the council president.

Pérez was re-elected to serve as council president on April 16 with 10 of the council members backing him and the remaining five backing Ald. Milele Coggs. The new council now has the most African Americans (eight), the most women (six) and the most openly LGBTQ members (two) in its history.

On April 26, Pérez released the committee appointments that list the council members assigned to each committee , including the chair and vice-chair.

In a statement three days later titled, "Back of the Bus," Pratt slammed the committee assignments, saying all four Black women on the council were shut out of committee leadership.

"While the Council now boasts the highest number of Black women ever, there is no Black woman serving as either chair or vice chair on any of the seven standing committees," she wrote.

"This is especially egregious when understanding that the second most senior member of the Council is a Black woman, who served as chair of both the Finance and Personnel Committee and the Licenses Committee for years," Pratt wrote, referencing Coggs.

She called her own appointment to only one committee ― Licenses ― "an additional affront."

Ald. Mark Chambers Jr. also received two committee assignments and no assignment to chair or vice-chair a committee. He, along with the council's four Black women, voted for Coggs and were not appointed to chair or vice-chair positions.

That's not the full story, though.

Pratt is to be appointed the vice-chair of the Judiciary and Legislation Committee in six months, a position to which Pérez has currently assigned himself, he said at Monday's meeting.

"There has been a serious misunderstanding between Alderwoman Pratt and I," Pérez said at the meeting. "I still have every intention after some onboarding to make her vice-chair of JudLeg in six months."

He moved to place the legislation on file, which would prevent it from going into effect if that committee recommendation is backed by the full council at its meeting on May 21. Seven committee members backed Pérez's motion while Ald. Russell W. Stamper II did not.

Pratt afterward told the Journal Sentinel that with 15 members and seven committees, each member should be on at least two committees.

Coggs was offered the chair of the Judiciary and Legislation Committee but declined it.

"I regret yet understand and respect your decision not to serve as the chair of the Judiciary and Legislation Committee this cycle," Pérez wrote to Coggs in an April 26 email released in response to an open records request. "This does not diminish my regard for your leadership or my belief that your knowledge and experience would have been an excellent fit for that body."

Coggs responded that she had been approached for the position after "many members also declined" and asked if he was also emailing them to create a record of the conversation.

"I am sure it is difficult to place members on committees and as I explained to you, I am experienced enough to know where my knowledge and talents are best utilized and Judicial & Legislative Committee is not it," she wrote. "To be clear our prior conversation did not eliminate your ability to attempt to find a more fitting chairmanship or vice-chairmanship for me."

Coggs, who appeared remotely during the meeting, afterward said that the council has an opportunity with Pratt's legislation to make guidelines for the future "so that things are more fair and equitable."

She largely directed questions about the chair position she was offered to her email exchange with Pérez but did say she had wanted to continue chairing the Licenses Committee. The committee, she said, gives her an opportunity to use her law and business degrees while working with the community.

Pérez said afterward that he had put the best people in place to "move the city forward," including with Pratt as vice-chair.

Pérez said he needed time with himself as vice chair to onboard new Ald. DiAndre Jackson, who was appointed chair of the Judiciary and Legislation Committee.

Richard “Dick” Pickup was a man of habit.

Early every morning, he’d rise and make his way to the Newport Beach Country Club, where he’d take a look at the stock market. He would have breakfast there, then make his way to his office at Eagle Four Partners on Newport Center Drive. By afternoon, he would be out on the golf course or doing some kind of exercise. Around 5:30 p.m. you could expect to see him at an early dinner.

John Huffman, who met Pickup in the early 1980s, said he knew where his friend was and what he was doing at just about any hour of the day.

Pickup’s son and son-in-law, Todd Pickup and Kevin Martin, told Gary Sherwin, Newport Beach & Co. president and chief executive, that they felt his routine served him well, as most people were often being pulled in all directions. The elder Pickup, by comparison, was steadfast and continued to fix his attention straight ahead of him.

“He would say, ‘This is what we’re going to do. This is how we’re going to do it,’ and then [he] would quietly and politely continue to pursue it day in and day out, year after year until he was successful,” Sherwin said.

Pickup was partway through his daily morning routine when he suffered a stroke on April 24 and died on April 25. He was 90.

Pickup was born and raised in Whittier, but he would eventually make his way to Newport Beach, settling there in the 1960s. Pickup and his first wife, Carole, raised their children in Newport.

Pickup made his fortune as a stockbroker and private investor in businesses and came into philanthropy later in life, according to Huffman. As recently as November, Pickup made a $50-million gift to Hoag to establish the Richard H. Pickup Center for Brain Health.

Prior to that, Pickup made a $15-million gift in 2017 to Hoag for what would eventually be named the Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute.

In a statement Wednesday, Robert Braithwaite, Hoag’s president and chief executive said, “Hoag and our entire community owe so much to Dick for his transformational contributions that have shaped the course of healthcare, particularly through the neurosciences institute that bears his name.

“Years ago, he impacted Hoag’s trajectory when he generously made a commitment that named the Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute. His support and friendship with institute leaders fueled the growth of the institute and delivered life-changing programs and care to countless people.

“Last year, he made another gift that will establish the Richard H. Pickup Center for Brain Health and help us provide crucial support for people in need of memory and cognitive care resources.

“Orange County’s healthcare landscape is better because of Dick Pickup, and for that, we are truly grateful.”

Pickup was involved in other nonprofits and, according to Newport Beach resident Bruce Cook, who got to know him well by the poolside at the Balboa Bay Club, instilled a sense of “noblesse oblige” in both of his children. His daughter, Devon Martin, is on the board of directors for Hoag and is involved in other nonprofit work.

Friends and colleagues described Pickup as deliberate and careful in business dealings, which he largely kept to his family and a handful of other business partners.

Huffman said he met Pickup through golf after a mutual friend of theirs, Bill Davenport, connected the two at a charity tournament they were both playing in. As the two played together, Huffman said he got to know the man not only for the depth of his understanding of business but his interest in people.

“He loved people, but he was quiet. He would never take the initiative in conversation,” Huffman recalled, with a laugh. “We had dinner almost every Tuesday night, and it’d always be this free-floating conversation. He’d always be asking questions. He was more of an asker than he was a teller. If you asked for information or advice, he’d give it, but he carried on conversations like interrogations.”

Huffman said Pickup was generous to his small circle of close friends. Pickup donated $10 million to pay off the debts of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, where Huffman was a pastor until 2010, after they completed a major facility project.

Cook, who covers galas and other social events for the Daily Pilot, said he very rarely saw Pickup attending one. When he did, Cook said, Pickup always flew under the radar.

Cook remembered Pickup loving to spend time in the sun and, if he wasn’t in the pool, was busy “voraciously” consuming any and all information he could get his hands on. He said Pickup was often reading newspapers, magazines and online news articles to get a sense of not only what was happening in the economy but in the world around him and how that would impact his own life in turn.

Over the last two decades, Pickup and his family invested money in the local tourism scene, acquiring the Balboa Bay Club and Resort in 2012.

Sherwin said he was present at the time when club ownership changed hands. Members had been upset and anxious about the changes, but Sherwin said Pickup and his family listened and said they would invest in the club and resort. The Balboa Bay Club celebrated its 75th anniverary last September.

“I think, for [the Pickup family], it was a matter of civic duty. They could do something that would restore the Balboa Bay Club and Resort back to its glory days. They were willing and able to put in a sizable investment ... they didn’t just take it as an asset but as a responsibility,” said Sherwin. “They’ve acquired a number of other hotel assets over the years, [including VEA Newport Beach and Pendry Newport Beach,] but this one they felt was important to do because it was in the community in which they lived.”

Pickup is survived by his wife, Donna; his children, Devon Martin and her husband, Kevin; Todd Pickup and his wife, Natalie; their mother, Carole; and his grandchildren, Makena Martin, Maddie Martin, Ryan Martin, Max Pickup and Neil Pickup.

A memorial fund has been set up in Pickup’s name at Hoag. Those interested in donating can do so at hoaghospitalfoundation.org/richard-pickup-tribute.html .
