#HenleyMBA:

How to craft a rich reflection chapter.

Henley MBA reflections

In the #HenleyMBA series , we’ve covered how to write up your introduction , analysis and recommendations chapters/sections, so now it’s time to look at the often under-considered reflection section. In this post, I’ll discuss 5 essential components of a reflection chapter, and provide some general pointers to keep in mind while you’re writing up this final section.

Note that this post discusses the reflection chapter in assignments (for example, MPS, MP, etc), and not Personal Development (PD) assignments themselves, or the MRC reflection – although there’s naturally a lot of overlap.

Let’s start with a good ol’ definition.

In true academic style, let’s kick things off by looking at the definition (or at least the Henley-preferred definition) of reflection:

“Reflection is a process, both individual and collaborative, involving experience and uncertainty. It is comprised of identifying questions and key elements of a matter that has emerged as significant, then taking one’s thoughts into dialogue with oneself and with others. One evaluates insights gained from that process with reference to:

  • additional perspectives,
  • one’s own values, experiences and beliefs, and
  • the larger context, within which the questions are raised.

Through reflection, one reaches newfound clarity, on which one bases changes in action or disposition. New questions naturally arise, and the process spirals onwards.”

(Jay & Johnson, 2002)

But what on earth does that mean, right? I’ll (attempt to) bring this definition down to earth by discussing 5 components that should make an appearance in your reflection chapter.

The 5 reflections in a Henley MBA

Reflection #1 – Module-related learnings.

The first matter to reflect on is your module-specific learnings. In other words, your learnings in relation to the specific module content (MPS/Strategy/R&R, etc). Consider (and answer) the following questions:

  • What were your key learnings, your ah-ha moments?
  • What new perspectives did you gain?
  • How has this impacted your beliefs and perhaps even values?

This might look something like the following:

“On reflection, I think my biggest ah-ha moment was how X impacts Y. I had always thought that X had no impact on Y, but now I can see… This got me thinking about my beliefs in relation to Y, specifically… Why did I think this? Perhaps because…”

Reflection #2 – Module interlinkages.

The next matter to ponder on is the connectedness of what you learnt in the module with other modules, and what this means for you. Consider the following questions:

  • What linkages to other modules did you observe?
  • How has your thinking broadened to be able to see the “big picture” more clearly?

Reflection #3 – Disagreements and lingering questions.

This is where it gets interesting, especially if you’re the kind of person who likes to play devil’s advocate. Reflect on the following points:

  • Was there any theory, model or framework that you simply didn’t agree with?
  • If so, why? Justify your position with a sound argument , but be humble. You’re not quite qualified to critique established theory (yet!)
  • What questions still linger in your mind following the completion of the module?

Reflection #4 – Real world impact.

What’s the MBA for if it’s not making a difference in the real world of business? Reflect on the following questions:

  • What have you changed in your management practice or in your organisation as a whole as a result of the module/assignment?
  • Are there any noticeable results yet? If so, what are they?
  • Do you plan to make any further changes in the future?

In other words, what impact has the module had in the real world? A reflection in this vein might look something like the following:

“In line with X theory/model/framework, I have changed the way I/the business does Y, and this has resulted in Z.”

Reflection #5 – Learnings about yourself.

Time to look inward even further. Consider how your ability to learn, grow and think has developed throughout the module. Some questions to consider:

  • What have you learnt about your own learning style (how you learn) through the module and assignment?
  • Are there some things that you find easier to grasp than other things?
  • Are there more effective ways to navigate and optimise your learning process?

For this reflection, it might be helpful to look at Felder and Soloman’s “Index of Learning Styles” to frame your thinking on this.

To recap then, you should aim to reflect on the following 5 areas when drawing up your reflection chapter/section:

  • Module-related learnings.
  • Module interlinkages.
  • Disagreements and lingering questions.
  • Real-world impact.
  • Learnings about yourself.

Naturally, you won’t always have something to say about every point, but if you incorporate as many of these as possible, you should have a fairly hearty reflection.

Thinking

Overarching points.

Before wrapping up, there are 3 additional, more generic and overarching points worth mentioning regarding the reflection chapter.

#1 – Forget about certainty.

When you’re writing up your reflection chapter, don’t feel the need to present a rock-solid, perfectly logical and cohesive argument. Reflection is about engaging in internal dialogue – messy, muddy dialogue , much of which will produce more questions than answers. Often, personal development involves realising that things are not as cut and dry as they seem – that the world is incredibly complex, and that there is seldom one right answer . Embrace this. Don’t mistake the “newfound clarity” in the Jay & Johnson definition for newfound certainty and simplicity

#2 – Incorporate models and extracts.

From a more practical, presentation perspective, consider using PD models such as the Henley star to visually represent your growth. Think back to the goals you set in your PD assignments. Has the current module contributed towards the achievement of any of these? If so, how?

Linked to this, it is always a good practice to include extracts from your learning journal to enrich the claims you make about your realisations, learnings, etc. Including extracts in the personal reflection chapter is much like including interview quotes in your analysis chapter. Don’t be shy!

#3 – Read the fine print.

Always read the assignment brief very carefully when it comes to the reflection section. In particular, are they asking for a personal reflection, or are they asking for a critical reflection on the impact of your recommendations?

The former is asking for everything we’ve discussed in this post. The latter is asking you to critically consider what the expected outcomes (benefits) of your recommendations are – for example, increased sales, decreased costs, etc. As you can see, these are very different! It may sound obvious, but a lot of students make this small but costly mistake. Don’t be one of them.

At a more nuanced level, take the time to read the brief’s requirements for the reflection section, as well as the assessment criteria (this is found right at the end of the brief). The exact requirements vary from assignment to assignment, and some may require more focus on 2 or 3 of the 5 reflections discussed earlier. Again, this is pretty obvious advice, but all too often students skim over this section as “its just PD”. Don’t throw away these relatively easy marks.

In summary.

In this post, I’ve discussed how to approach the reflection chapter/section of your Henley MBA assignments. To recap:

  • Incorporate as many of the 5 reflection components as possible to provide a comprehensive reflection.
  • Forget about certainty – embrace the muddy waters!
  • Include PD models to visually demonstrate your development.
  • Weave in extracts from your learning journal to enrich your reflective discussion.
  • Carefully review the reflection requirements for each assignment – don’t reflect on the wrong thing!

Sandi de Souza: On owning your personal development and how the Henley international MBA helped her secure her dream job

Sandi de Souza knew, when she qualified as a chartered accountant in 2004, that she wanted to do an MBA for the broader business knowledge it would bring her. But it was only later in her career, with her eye on a role in the C-suite, that she finally took the plunge. It was a decision that she credits with helping secure her new role as CFO for SAP Sub-Saharan Africa this year.

There’s never a perfect time to do an MBA, there’s always going to be next year. A friend and I had spent plenty of time discussing it over the years, during our treks up Kilimanjaro and to Everest Base Camp. It was the knowledge that we were approaching forty, that made us decide it was now or never. We both completed the MBA in 2020.

I chose Henley Africa because it offered an international qualification. I did a bit of research around the different schools that offer the MBA in South Africa and Henley Africa was one of the ones I know is accredited just about everywhere. In addition, I also liked the idea of a flexible qualification, unlike others which can be all-consuming and tend to cram the programme into a much shorter time frame. Given that I would still be working while I studied, I really needed that flexibility.

One of the highlights for me was the international visit, which in our case was a week-long trip to China. We were given a case study with real life problems at real organisations, and then we had the opportunity to work with those organisations. China is very different from the African business context, but the case study I worked on was in the rural areas and I was able to draw a lot of parallels with Africa from that experience. There were vast areas with poor connectivity and extreme poverty, which I have encountered frequently during my 17-year career working with SAP across sub-Saharan Africa.  Though each region has its nuances and it’s been interesting to see how mindsets differ across regions. I’ve learned that there are a lot of lessons we can learn from each other and best practices we can share.

I’m exceptionally fortunate to be working for an organization like SAP that has given me so many opportunities and been at the forefront of promoting diversity in women in leadership. In our executive team, four of the five members are women. I wouldn’t say there’s a major difference in our leadership style, except for the way in which decisions are made. I think women are naturally inclined to be more inclusive, to listen to different viewpoints. And that’s a change I’ve seen in the past few years as more and more women are brought into leadership.

It is critical to have strong leaders in business who can understand and integrate multiple perspectives and be able to lead their teams through the flux that Africa is experiencing . There are a lot of challenges that other parts of the world may not appreciate, that are particular to Africa. Foreign exchange for example, is not even a consideration in Europe as everyone deals in Euros. There are all these different currencies in Africa and access to the stronger currencies like the US Dollar is a challenge for some.

I consider myself a very collaborative leader . I certainly look for the opinions of others and listen to them and then I try to coach people rather than just tell them this is how it is. I try to encourage them to come up with the conclusion on their own. I’m passionate about developing others and I regularly draw on those aspects of the MBA, related to personal development. I use the Wheel of Life all the time. Also the Henley Star. It doesn’t matter what role you’re in, whether you’re in executive leadership or an individual contributor, understanding your own personal development and being able to work on yourself is crucial to being the best that you can be. It’s all too easy to just sit there and say the company must arrange training for you. That concept of owning your personal development, is absolutely critical for me.

The MBA helps you to consciously think about what you want and to move forward purposefully as opposed to just muddling along intuitively . Nothing taught on the MBA is brand new or rocket science. It was less about the content and more about the process that was the key takeaway for me. For example, the process of using various models to look at things through different lenses. That concept has stuck with me and in everything I do today, I always try to approach things from different perspectives. The process also gave me an ability to understand why I do things in certain ways.  Anyone who has been on a career journey will have developed a natural ability to think about some of these things in a certain way, but you don’t necessarily know why you’re doing them, or what to do next. This is one of the main things I gained from my MBA.

I think the experience of learning from others and engaging with them was also really valuable. I’m still in touch with a few people from my MBA and I think that, for someone who perhaps hasn’t had that experience or that sort of exposure before, the opportunity to mingle and expand one’s network is highly rewarding.

Executive MBA

personal development assignment henley

One of things that sets the Henley Executive MBA (EMBA) – Global apart from other postgraduate programmes is the strong emphasis on personal development. It feels great to systematically take time for personal reflection that is not focused on work objectives, but rather on balancing my personal needs with the external demands I’m facing. Identifying and resolving matters that stop you from being a better person are an integral part of the path of any leader who wants to develop.

My personal experience is that personal development takes time. In that sense, it is good that the personal development module of the EMBA – Global is spread across the two-year journey. The topics discussed and reflected on gradually evolve and become more challenging. First, we were challenged to develop our self-awareness. Then, we were challenged to take care of ourselves. And, at this point of the studies, we are challenged to take ownership and fully commit to personal development.

This September, we had our third personal development workshop in Helsinki, followed by a reflective written assignment that we needed to submit by November. The workshop was run by Dr Chris Dalton who is among the most inspiring personalities within the Henley faculty.

During the workshop, we were challenged to look at the anchors that shape the path of our careers and the decisions we take during different transition periods. My two biggest career anchors were ”autonomy” and ”lifestyle”. Autonomy means doing things my own way, flexibly and freely. Lifestyle, in turn, is about integrating all the parts of my home life with my career. I can recognise and appreciate how these two anchors have shaped my career. As an entrepreneur, I get to decide what I do, when I do it and who I work with. And, I frequently prioritise family matters over work commitments.

The key personal development topic for the second stage of the EMBA – Global is ”taking ownership”. This means that we need to commit to development. We cannot simply demonstrate self-awareness, but actually need to take initiative in becoming a better person.

In the previous personal development assignment, I chose the following four actions as ways to improve balance between work, home life and study during stage 2 of the EMBA:

  • Having a proper 5-to-6 week summer holiday in July/August 2022
  • Re-introducing full recovery weekdays (Fridays) into my weekly schedule
  • Raising prices in my own consultancy business to reduce demand (and workload)
  • Completely stop using alcohol to reduce its negative side effects (weight gain, sleep difficulties)

Out of these four, I have been able to fulfill three. The only one which did not happen was the re-introduction of full recovery days (Fridays) into weekly schedules. I have, however, had several weekdays each month without any specific work tasks or commitments, allowing me to get some of the much-needed rest and recovery. The effect of these changes has been positive, but not sufficient. I need to be even more decisive about my priorities in the future to ensure sufficient recovery and mental health.

At the moment, what is mostly challenging the balance between work, home life and study are financial struggles. As an entrepreneur it is difficult to work less when I know that I will need all the money I can make to pay off debts and to pay for the necessary renovations in our house.

To reach a better peace of mind, I will need to challenge myself to question whether all the expenses are necessary and whether there are other ways in which I could finance the necessary investments – at least for the duration of my EMBA studies. Maybe after completing this degree, I will again have more time to work on things that will bring additional money to the table.

The final question we needed to answer in the recent personal development assignment was ”How do you take care of yourself during stage 3 of the EMBA studies?”.

After a careful reflection, I chose the following activities:

  • Moderating physical exercise and focusing on activities that bring joy
  • Prioritising rest and recovery by skipping or postponing less important tasks
  • Using the coaching meetings included in the EMBA programme to get external support for prioritisation and reality checking
  • Actively seeking for professional support if experiencing any signs of mental health problems, such as sleep difficulties or feelings of hopelessness

In conclusion, my main finding from this reflection is that by taking care of my own needs in general, and mental health in particular, it is also much easier to actively work towards becoming a better person and, hopefully, also a better leader.

Personal development is a conscious process of improving self-awareness, acquiring knowledge, skills and experience that will allow me to achieve my academic, personal and professional goals. In this assignment I will reflect on my personal development that I experienced in my whole life and identify key learning moments that I will critically analyses using various models and concepts I have learnt thus far. I will also reflect on my recent career as a businessman and analyze the fit between me as a manager and my company and also link my personal development to my reason for tarring my MBA with Henley.

Lastly I will highlight what impact my stage 1 assignments could have on my company and identify one key short term goal I intend to achieve during my first year at Henley and present evidence I would use to measure the progress towards it. After a retrospective Judgment of myself, I concede that if I am to grow and become an effective leader and businessman, it is important for me to become increasingly aware of myself. Human beings are a product of their reconstructed memory, with this in mind I intend to make my personal development plan, to guide me in my Rooney of life in its holistic form.

Don’t waste your time! Order your assignment!

In it, I will document my developments academically and in business through out the duration of my MBA programmer and beyond. The hallmark of a Henley MBA, is programmer members’ personal development and I intend to get stuck into it at an early stage of my studies. My Personal Development Plan will incorporate a number of models but to get off the ground I would use The SMART model, by (Peter Trucker 1954), because Its uses a step-by-step approach that helps create the discipline and the structure that I would require to realize outcomes.

Specific – Completing my MBA within 3 years Measurable – I will timely submit of my assignments Achievable – I have all the materials, aptitude and support from family and Henley, that I require to pass my MBA Reasonable – I am more than equipped to study and understand all the materials I will receive from Henley and those available on Blackboard learn Timely – I have a development plan through which I have allotted enough time to study for my MBA 2. Self-Awareness Reflection Priority of my Personal Development Plan would be to grow and develop personally, academically and in business.

Figure 1 below, by (Chris Dalton, 2013) highlights how my personal development will influence my education, my business and me. Figure 1: Influence of Personal Development plan, adapted from http:// handlebar. Files. Wordless. Com/2012/04/model-for-PDP-at-Henley Jpg Having grown up in a household where education was held up as a high water mark for human achievement, both my parents and I were convinced that I would grow up to be a lawyer, pilot or a doctor.

Reflecting on my personal development in my life, it is evident that whilst a good education has always played a major role to elevate me room one station of my life to the next, I realized that education also included outside the classroom learning, as it is my strong belief that education and intelligence are diverse. After school I worked for Dunlop tires, ICP and BIB Solutions. At ICP my personal development become a priority, the company had a strong belief in training and constant self assessment exercises.

After a successful career at ICP, in 2009, I decided to embark on a new challenge, I started a business. Business grew yearly but whilst all this was happening I neglected my formal education, there was no academic progression in my life, one loud conclude that I was suffering from the tyranny of common sense, the feeling that I knew it all. I would ask myself, What would an MBA teach me that I have not yet experienced in the past 8 years of me being in business? I was living in the bubble of the present.

Deep down I knew I needed to further my academic education, my long standing goal. 3. Key Learning Moment The 24th of July 2013 was my ‘eureka moment’, I decided to concede that an MBA was the next level of personal development that I needed to embark on, if I am to take my business to the next level. I began to suffer a crisis of confidence, since I had not tidied formally for almost 10 years. I knew very well that studying part time would be challenging for me since I also had a business to run.

But I resolved that I would need to be disciplined and have clarity of purpose if I am going to be successful. Honey and Uniform learning styles questionnaire, (Honey & Uniform, 2000), concludes that I am a pragmatist, meaning that I am realistic, down to earth and practical. From these results it is easy to see why I decided to enroll for the Henley MBA, it meant that I resolved that education is not always a qualifier but lack of it might be a disqualified. 20% 100% Activist Re? Sector Theorist Pragmatist Figure 2: Learning Styles Questionnaire results, based on (Honey & Uniform, 2000) Figure 3: Shari Window, (Left & Ingram, 1955) Using the Shari window in Figure 3 above it helped unearth an ability that I had under-estimated and never bothered to try, maybe it was through lack of opportunity but I then discovered my strengths, blind spots and areas I needed to further explore, like my academic growth, which had been my ‘blind spot,’ leaving me only one option, to enroll for the Henley MBA. 4. Reflection and analysis of career

Being a Managing Director of your own enterprise is challenging, it requires an immense amount of discipline, dedication and commitment. Your roles as the owner of the business overlap in many cases. I have come to understand and appreciate the role of a team, and I believe in most organizations, teamwork is an endemic and if used appropriately, can cure most of my company’s ills. Using the Beeline Team-Role type analysis taught me never to undermine the importance of team roles, and I discovered that I need to focus on what I am most useful for in a team, which is being monitor evaluator, completer finisher and plant, Beeline (1993).

This self assessment exercise made me realize that I had a lot of knowledge gaps, and that in a team environment one needs to be flexible to sometimes foregoer one’s ‘natural’ role because they were dedicated to putting the task and the team’s needs ahead of their individual needs as illustrated by (Watkins & Sweet, 1997) in an article titled sailing with Beeline. The Henley Star Worksheet: Taboo Chough SAA 1 Personal characteristics Discipline Dedication Commitment Knowledge and understanding Course Materials

Time Management Effective behaviors Read & study Study & Network Plan & Manage my time Complete my assignments on time Outcomes for individual, organization and community Achieving my MBA in 2016 Leadership Managerial Experience Skills and experience Figure 4: Looking at my role as a manager through the eyes of the Henley star (Stagnant, 2013) It is evident that how well I will perform in any role will largely depend on my level of skills to drive my development.

The Henley star as illustrated in Figure 4 above, concludes that effective behaviors are the drivers for outcomes and that the effective behaviors are a factor of personal characteristics, knowledge, understanding and skills. Having noticed that I was lacking in skills, knowledge and understanding I knew the only way to address this deference was through a Henley MBA. 5. Why the Henley MBA? Enrolling for a Henley MBA was the only rational conclusion. Henley MBA is a very transportable degree, both during the learning stages and after you qualify because it is highly recognized.

The delivery of a Henley MBA is through blended learning. 6. Impact of Stage 1 Assignment The assignments in stage 1 will give me a very good underpinning for me to start ailing in the knowledge gaps that I have alluded to. I have thus far already learnt a lot about teamwork and been exposed to tried and tested models, tools and theories, that I believe can transform individuals like myself and organizations like my own to bring it inline with the international best practice standard.

SAA 1, class of 2014, has strong individuals from multitudes of backgrounds, different organizations across a broad spectrum of the economy – from the public sector, Seems, multinationals and the private sector. There are Coos, senior managers and directors. Henley Business School congresses collaborative consumption, learning through groups. I am confident that the assignments together with these individuals will develop me in my career and ultimately my organization.

Most of all I will learn time management, self awareness, reflection and planning. 7. Barriers to access to data and senior managers I will not have any barriers with regards to access to data and senior managers as I own the business. 8. Time management I drafted a personal development plan refer to Appendix B, which will help me identify what I desire out of a Henley MBA and in life as a whole. This development plan will assist me to become the person I wish to be.

Human nature is forgettable, that is why I would like to make my personal development plan. This Personal Development Plan will document my development as an academic and a professional over the period of the MBA programme. A marked objective of Henley MBA is to ensure that students develop personal and professional skills set which will facilitate not only the successful completion of tasks inherent to the programme but the realization of career goals.

According to (Liptak, 2001) presenting a path of personal development is a difficult task: talking about yourself in an introspective manner does not always lend itself to coherence, therefore, in this Personal Development Plan I will focus on what I know about myself, what my goals are and what needs to be developed in order to link the two. This plan is a way to get perfection in life and accompl

ish my goals.

My current Personal Development Plan (PDP) is meant for developing my academic qualification and working skills to see myself being a Business Manager/Divisional Manager in a reputable financial institution 5 years down the line. I am already having 5 years in managing self, managing others, in managing managers and function in Human Resources division; this is according to the seven leadership/career pipelines as presented in (mike pedler, 2007).

According to the seven leadership/career pipeline one could progress from managing self, managing others, managing managers, managing a function, managing a business, managing a group of business and then manage the enterprise. I have done my graduation in BAdmin (Human Resources), BA honours in Industrial Psychology; MA in Industrial and Organizational Psychology but understanding how

business is managed is something that has always attracted my attention and interest. After completion of my graduation in BA (Hons) in 2004, I joined EDCON as an OD Practitioner.

I was required to manage various organizational development interventions. I served the company for 3. 5 years. In 2008, I joined Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) as a head of the unit. I served the company for 4 years and was awarded the team leader of the year award in my last year of working with the company. Prior to joining ACSA, I worked for Capitec Bank for a year where I was leading a team of three HR Officers. In 2012 I joined Industrial Development Corporation as a Human Capital Business partner in which my role is managing managers from human capital perspective.

I am required to service various units within the corporation and my reporting is the Departmental Head, this allows me to get broader insight of how various units are operated. I am amongst the top performing Human Capital Business Partners in the corporation but am still feel I should grow towards managing the business. In order to capacitate myself to progress my career I think MBA could afford me the opportunity to acquire the relevant business skills and hence I decided to complete my MBA at Henley as a priority.

To develop and confirm my success as a good Business/Divisional Manager I need to have a broad range of skills relating to management and leadership. Based on my current role and situation, a PDP will prioritize the most important areas that I need to concentrate on and will

point me to the right direction for further advice and training.  My Personal Development Plan To manage the business, one must have a good experience and relevant qualification.

The right qualification one must have is an MBA in order to have the right understanding and knowledge you must require. And experience is one thing that will come after a good investment of time in learning and development (miller, 2011). To achieve my goal of being the Business/Divisional Manager, I need to have an MBA degree which is one thing that I have already started and will surely be completing successfully within three years’ time i. e. end 2015. And I am already having the management experience of 6 years now.

With 4 years of experience as a Head of the department, and that too with reputable aviation firm in South Africa. I have already laid the stepping stone to achieve my goal and this Personal Development Plan will surely make me achieve my goal effectively within the decided time span in an organized manner. I have always been a good performer when it comes to my work i. e. Human Capital Business Partner. In 2010 I got an award of being the 2nd best student for the Management Development Programme (MDP) at GIBBS.

I am a quick learner and this is the key quality which I think that is required to be successful in your life. My past track record and academics have always been good. I got an award in Industrial Psychology for being the best student in Bachelor’s degree and also my previous study records at honours and masters level

are on a better side. So, I am confident of completing my MBA. With study I have got regular appraisals in terms of salary and designation at workplace because of my performance and passion for leadership that is in me.

I am also mentoring and coaching eight professionals in their respective careers. To grow from a Human Capital Business Partner level to Managing the Business/Division there are a few milestone that I need to achieve in terms of designation, which are as follows:

* Human Capital Business Partner.

 * Head: Human Capital Business Partners.

* Divisional Executive Human Capital Along with these, I am required to develop my certain skills i. e. presentation, Emotional resilience, prompt decision making, project management, strategic planning and leadership.

As, these are the most important and necessary skills to be a good business manager/divisional manager as the quality of these skills which I am currently having are only good enough to a Human Capital Business Partner level, and to improve them to Head and finally to Divisional level I am required to gain good experience and knowledge which will come with time and practice. Further, to achieve my goal of being a Business/Divisional Manager, I have distributed my achievements into a short term, medium term and long term goals in order to have an organized and perfect approach towards achieving my goal i. Short Term Goal: To successfully complete my Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) by end of 2015. As to be a good Business/Divisional Manager you need to have the right qualification.

Medium Term Goal: To join a reputable secondment and job rotation

programme within the Corporation, at a management level. To gain experience and for development of skills i. e. presentation, Emotional resilience, prompt decision making, project management, strategic planning and leadership that are required for periodic promotions and good performance.

As, along with skills and qualification experience is also the utmost thing that is required to getting promotion on timely basis. Long Term Goal: Ensure and give the best performance in order to get promoted as a Divisional Manager. To achieve my short term goal, I have already started doing my MBA, after successful completion of this course; I will be required to enroll myself for Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) programme to further enhance my business skills. To achieve my medium term goal, I will be required to join a reputable financial services organization at my previous level as a Head of Department or at a higher level. Still at either of the positions one thing that I need to keep in mind is performance, as in order to progress in your career you can’t compromise with it. And all of your promotion, salary appraisals and performance bonus depend on it. Along with this I will also be checking out my development in terms of skills required to be a good Divisional Manager, which I will be checking out on a timely basis in order to have a clear picture of improvement which I am going through.

This can be done by constant audit of skills at regular interval of time. If everything goes well as per the plan, my aim of being a Divisional Manager will surely be achieved in the decided

time of 5 years. As 3 years will be going for getting my MBA qualification. And the rest 2 years are for working my way up the career pipeline and getting timely promotions. The following is my SWOT analysis which will be helpful for achieving my goal of being a Divisional Manager in 5 years down the line:

* I am a good and quick learner; hence I have a good educational record. My learning styles according to the exercise conducted in our 1st Henley MBA workshop, is “Activist” as a primary style (which allows me to be open minded and flexible, seeks challenge and novelty; I like group working and presenting). This will help me in successfully completing my MBA qualification.

* Leadership: I have successfully leaded the HR teams with various companies with good success. I am a good motivator, and this is required to motivate your work or study team in order to encourage them to start a tsk with full thrive.

 Weaknesses:

* I am weak in accounting & financial skills as my education background so far is into human resources stream and not into a commerce background.

* Lack of time management skills.

My MBA will help me improve my time management and accounting & financial skills. By practicing to give presentation on a regular basis in front of the fellow students & colleagues, will improve my communication skills. . Financial sectors are passing through a phase of global recession; hence the jobs are scares. If everything goes as per my PDD, I’ll be able to complete my MBA by 2015. Thereafter,

I’m confident that by this time I’d have overcome my weaknesses and improved my skills to a level where I’ll be able to get timely promotions and increments. So, by this PDP, I am confident that I’ll be able to become a Divisional Manager within the time frame of 5 years.
