Quizlet is a web tool and a mobile app that boosts students learning through a number of study tools that include flashcards and game-based quizzes. As a teacher, you can create your own class on Quizlet and share study sets with your students. You can either design your study sets from scratch or search for pre-made sets to customize and use in your teaching. 

If you have not already tried it, Quizlet is definitely a great game-based learning tool with huge educational potential. However, most of the really great stuff in Quizlet is provided in the premium plan including the ability to track students progress and create unlimited classes.

[Disclosure: Just to give you the full picture, I’ve recently teamed up with Quizlet as an affiliate. However, it’s important to note that this post was crafted well before that partnership took shape. So rest assured, the opinions and insights you’ll read here are completely my own, derived from my years of classroom teaching and educational research. I stand by the authenticity of this review.]

The purpose of this post is to introduce you to Quizlet and show you how it works. In doing so, you will get to learn the following:

Quizlet: Teaching activities 

There are several ways to use Quizlet in your teaching. For instance, you can use it to conduct formative assessment in your class.  You can create polls, surveys, or game based quizzes to test students comprehension of a concept you taught them. You can then analyze their responses to identify areas where learning problems happen and where individualized intervention is needed. 

Also, based on your analysis of students feedback, you can modify your teaching strategies, customize your lesson plans in order to address students learning problems in a more effective way. Other similar tools to use for game-based formative assessment include   Kahoot , Blooket ,  Quizizz , and Quizalize .

You can also use Quizlet in language learning to foster students vocabulary and enhance their overall grasp of the target language. Create interactive flashcards focused on specific language terms and invite students to work on them individually or in groups. Or, delegate this task to students and let them create and share flashcards with each other while you monitor the whole process. 

Another key area to target using Quizlet is the learning of grammar. Create tests where students are required to use their grammatical knowledge of the target language to answer questions correctly. In this way, students will get to practice their grammar and hone in their writing skills.

Quizlet can be used across different school subjects. For instance, math and chemistry teachers can draw on the gaming principles of Quizlet to facilitate the learning of abstract and complex scientific concepts. Quizlet editor includes a wide variety of mathematical symbols, signs, and calculations which can be easily integrated into study sets. 

Science teachers can use Diagram sets to create labelled images and illustrative visuals to  explain hard to grasp science processes. Similarly, social studies teachers can create flashcards and game-based quizzes to test students geographical and historical knowledge, etc. 

Quizlet login

To be able to make the best of Quizlet you need to open an account. You have different sign-up options to choose from. You can sign up using your Facebook, your Google account, or your custom email and password (personally, I do not like to tie my social media accounts to other platforms).  Once you sign up, log in to start creating and sharing study sets.

How to set up a class on Quizlet?

You can easily create classes on Quizlet and add students to them. To create a class:

  • Log in to your Quizlet account
  • Click on Classes and select Create a class
  • Type in a name for your class and a description
  • Check whether you want to allow students to add study sets and new members (you probably do not need to enable this feature)
  • Select a school and click on Create a class.

Once your class is created, you can start sharing study sets with your students. You can either add an existing study set or create a new one. When you add study sets to your class you can choose whether you want to enable students to edit them or not by clicking on Allow class to edit.

What are study sets?

There are two types of study sets: a list of terms paired with their matching definitions, and a set of questions with their corresponding answers. A study set can include the following elements: text, images, diagrams, and recorded audio.  Diagram sets are interactive images that you create by adding terms and optional definitions. You can only add one diagram image per set. Also, diagrams are only available for premium subscribers.

How to create a study set?

To create a study set, login to your Quizlet account, and click on Create. Type in a title and a description then enter your terms-definition pairs. Often times, when you start typing your terms Quizlet provides suggestions based on study sets provided by other users. If the suggestion matches your term click on it to add it. 

The same with adding definitions. You can also add images to your study sets by clicking on the Image button at the right hand side. Quizlet provides suggestions for images to include or you can simply upload your own.There is also the possibility to  import  terms-definition pairs using Word, Excel, or Google Docs. 

How to search for study sets

You can search for pre-made study sets that are publicly available in Quizlet library. Simply go to Quizlet homepage, select Search and type in your query and press Enter. Use filters (e.g., diagram sets, classes, textbooks, courses,  or users) to narrow down your search. When you find the study set you are interested in click on its title to make a copy to edit and share with your students. 

How to share Quizlet study sets?

Once your study set is ready you have access to different sharing options including: sending it directly to someone using their email address, sharing it through generated link, sharing it directly on Google Classroom, sharing on Remind, among others.

Here is how students can join your class. From within your Class click on Members from the top bar. Next, copy the generated link and share it with students. Anyone that clicks on that link can sign up and join your class automatically.

The second way students can join your class is by asking to join. To do that, students go to your (teacher) Quizlet profile, select the class they want to join and click on Request to join this class. You will get a notification when they do and you can grant them access to your class.

How can students study on Quizlet?

When you share study sets with students, they (students) have  8 ways to work on them: five study modes and three activities/games.

The five study modes provided by Quizlet are:

  • Flashcards mode: Students review terms and questions using flashcards the same way they would do using a standard flashcard tool such as Easy Notecards .
  • Learn mode: “Answer questions that get progressively harder. This study mode creates a personalized study sequence based on your familiarity with the content and helps you master everything you need to know.”
  • Write mode: Students answer questions through writing.
  • Spell mode: Students type the words and definitions they hear. This is especially useful for studying spelling or practicing a new language.
  • Test mode: Students answer different types of questions. 

Game activities provided by Quizlet are:

  • Match: In this game, students ‘Race against the clock to match terms and definitions as quickly as they can.’
  • Gravity: Students type “answers quickly to stop asteroids from hitting your planet. As you progress through the levels, asteroids start falling faster. This game is currently available on the website only.” 

What is Quizlet Checkpoint

Checkpoint is an interesting way for teachers to conduct quick formative assessments in class.”These quick activities provide rich feedback to inform future lesson plans and offer a quick way to engage students in material in real time.”

What is Quizlet Live

Quizlet Live is a collaborative classroom game to use with students to boost their learning. Quizlet Live supports two game modes: a Teams mode (students play in randomly assigned groups) and an Individual mode (students play against each other). Is there a Quizlet app?

Yes, Quizlet has a mobile app that that is available in both Google Play Store and Apple Store . 

Is Quizlet free?

Quizlet offers both  free and premium plans. The free plan is limited in terms of the features it provides. The premium version offers more features including the ability to track students progress, create unlimited number of classes, scan documents to create study sets, access to solutions from over 10.000 textbooks and many more.

What is Quizlet?

At its most basic, Quizlet is a digital pop-quiz database. It features more than 300 million study sets, each one being like a deck of flash cards. It's also interactive, with the ability to create your own study set, or clone and edit those of others.

Verified Creators, as they're called, also create and share study sets. These come from curriculum publishers and educational institutions so you know they will be of a high caliber.

Quizlet

Quizlet is sectionalized by subject so it can easily be navigated to find a specific study target. Lots of these use flashcard-style layouts that offer a prompt or question that the student can select to flip over to get the answer.

But there are various options that let you learn more from the same data in different ways. So you could select "learn" instead of "flashcards," and then the question would be given only with multiple choice answers, for a more active learning approach. 

What's new in Quizlet?

Quizlet is often updating what it has to offer and it now has a new design overhaul with the idea of making everything more engaging for students and teachers alike.

Some previously free-to-access sections are no longer there since both the Learn and the Test Modes requires you to have a Quizlet Plus account to get access.

The use of AI-powered tools has resulted in a huge amount of new materials available in recent months, and the company says that's only going to continue to grow.

How does Quizlet work?

Quizlet is broken down into several styles, including:

Flashcards are pretty self explanatory, like real ones, with a question on one side and the answer on the other.

Learn puts questions and answers into multiple choice-style quizzes that can be completed to get an overall result. This applies to images, too.

Spell will speak aloud a word and the student is then required to type out the spelling of it.

Test is an auto-generated mix of questions with written, multiple choice, and true-or-false answer options. 

Match has you pairing up correct words or a mix of words and images.

Gravity is a game that has asteroids with words coming at a planet you need to protect by typing out the words before they hit.

Live is a game mode that allows for multiple students to work collaboratively.

What are the best Quizlet features?

Quizlet has all those excellent modes that allow for a variety of ways to get information across for learning across a broad range of subjects. 

The smart adaptive nature of Quizlet is a really powerful feature. The Learn mode uses data from millions of anonymous sessions and then generates adaptive study plans designed to improve learning. 

Quizlet offers a lot of support for English language learners and students with learning differences. Select a word or definition, and it will be read aloud. Or, in the case of teacher accounts, attach your own audio recording. It's also possible to add visual learning aids to cards with specific images or custom diagrams. 

Quizlet has a plethora of media that can be used, including a huge pool of licensed Flickr photography. Music can also be added, allowing for very targeted learning. Or teachers may find something ideal that has already been created and is available in the selection of shared online quizzes.

Quizlet Live is superb as students are given codes and once they sign in they're randomly grouped for a game to start. For each question, a selection of possible answers appear on teammates' screens, but only one of them has the right answer. Students must work together to determine which is the correct one. At the end, a snapshot is provided for teachers to see how well the students have understood the material.

How much does Quizlet cost?

Quizlet is free to sign-up to and start using. 

For teachers, it's charged at $34 per year to get extra features, such as the ability to upload your own images and to record you own voice – both powerful options if you want the freedom to create your own study sets from scratch. 

Teachers can also track learner activity with formative assessments and homework as well. Teachers can also adapt Quizlet Live, organize classes, use the app, and have no ads.

Play a game Use a game such as Gravity to help students learn the nature of this digital tool while learning and gaming at the same time.

Star terms Have students star terms so they can revisit them later, or star them yourself to draw attention to areas that need covering.

Use test mode Have students use test mode first so you can assess where they are on the subject before deciding what extra help may be necessary.

Below is a basic example of what a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet looks like, with all the important features of a spreadsheet highlighted.

Difference between a workbook, worksheet, and spreadsheet

Because the terms spreadsheet, workbook, and worksheet are so similar, there often is confusion when trying to understand their differences. When you open Microsoft Excel (a spreadsheet program), you're opening a workbook . A workbook can contain one or more different worksheets that are accessed through the tabs at the bottom of the worksheet your currently viewing. What's often most confusing is that a worksheet is synonymous with a spreadsheet. In other words, a spreadsheet and worksheet mean the same thing. However, most people only refer to the program as a spreadsheet program and the files it creates as spreadsheet files or worksheets.

Spreadsheets are ideal for financial data, such as your checking account information, budgets, taxes, transactions, billing, invoices, receipts, forecasts, and any payment system.

Form templates can be created to handle inventory , evaluations, performance reviews, quizzes, time sheets, patient information, and surveys.

School and grades

Teachers can use spreadsheets to track students, calculate grades, and identify relevant data, such as high and low scores, missing tests, and students who are struggling.

Managing a list in a spreadsheet is a great example of data that does not contain numbers, but still can be used in a spreadsheet. Great examples of spreadsheet lists include telephone, to-do, and grocery lists.

Spreadsheets can keep track of your favorite player stats or stats on the whole team. With the collected data, you can also find averages, high scores, and statistical data. Spreadsheets can even be used to create tournament brackets and help track fantasy football stats.

In a spreadsheet, data is entered in one or more cells . To enter data in a cell, follow the steps below.

  • Click the cell where you want to enter data.
  • Start typing the data using your keyboard. The data is automatically entered in the selected cell.
  • Click the cell where you want to enter additional data.
  • Click in the formula bar , located between the Ribbon and all cells, where you want to start entering the additional data.
  • Type the data using your keyboard. The data is automatically entered in the selected cell.

To add additional data to a cell that already has data entered in it, follow the steps below.

  • Type the data using your keyboard. The data is automatically entered in the selected cell where the mouse cursor is placed in the formula bar.

Although some uses above could be done in a word processor , spreadsheets have a considerable advantage over word processors when using numbers. It would be impossible to calculate multiple numbers in a word processor and have the value of the calculation immediately appear. Spreadsheets are also more dynamic with the data and can hide, show, and sort information to make processing lots of information easier.

An active worksheet is the worksheet that is currently open. For example, in the earlier Excel picture, the sheet tabs at the bottom show "Sheet1," "Sheet2," and "Sheet3," with Sheet1 being the active worksheet. The active tab usually has a white background behind the tab name.

In Microsoft Excel 2016 and earlier, and OpenOffice Calc, there are three sheet tabs that open ( Sheet1 , Sheet2 , and Sheet3 ) by default. In Google Sheets, your spreadsheets starts with one sheet (Sheet1).

In Microsoft Excel 365, by default, there is only one sheet tab that opens ( Sheet1 ) when you create a workbook.

The default number of worksheets in a new workbook is 255. However, once the file is saved, you can add as many as your hard drive capacity allows.

Not to be confused with the file name , in Microsoft Excel, there is a 31 character limit for each worksheet name.

In all spreadsheet programs, including Microsoft Excel, rows are labeled using numbers (e.g., 1 to 1,048,576). All columns are labeled with letters from A to Z, then with two letters. For example, after the letter Z, the next column is AA, AB, AC, ..., AZ and then incrementing to BA, BB, BC, etc., to the last column XFD.

When working with a cell , you combine the column with the row. For example, the first cell is in column A and on row 1, so the cell is labeled as A1.

Setting your students up for success means so much more than teaching daily lessons and hoping students do well on assessments.

You need to teach the information and then provide effective ways for your students to review what you’ve taught!

Some teachers like to create customized study guides and booklets for their classes, but that takes a lot of time and effort outside of school hours.

That’s why so many teachers consider using Quizlet, an online study tool, to save time when helping students prepare for tests!

But before you jump right into adding a new tool to your classroom, it’s important to understand the pros and cons of Quizlet to help decide if it’s right for you and your students.

In this blog, we’ll discuss the biggest pros and cons of using Quizlet to make your decision a little easier.

However, before we jump in it’s important to answer one other question -- what exactly is Quizlet?

In Quizlet, information is organized into “study sets” that users like teachers or students add to their accounts.

When using Quizlet, students log in and choose the appropriate study set for the concepts they need to review. These can be created by a teacher or generated by other users.

Because of the flexibility and customization available, Quizlet can be used in any grade level and any type of class.

That means whether you’re a middle school career readiness teacher or a high school health science teacher, Quizlet can help your students study.

Quizlet has seven standard study modes that help students review in the way that works best for them :

You can upgrade to the paid version of Quizlet to remove the ads, but that may not fit into your classroom budget when there are more important things to purchase!

2. Students Could Learn Incorrect Information on Quizlet

Because Quizlet allows any user to create and share a study set, there is no guarantee the information is accurate.

If a student logs in and chooses a set created by someone else, there’s a possibility they could accidentally study incorrect information!

But there’s no way to keep other users from posting the information found on your assessments.

Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Apache Open Office, LibreOffice, etc. are some spreadsheet software. Among all these software, Microsoft Excel is the most commonly used spreadsheet tool and it is available for Windows, macOS, Android, etc.

A collection of spreadsheets is known as a workbook. Every Excel file is called a workbook. Every time you start a new project in Excel, you’ll need to create a new workbook.

There are several methods for getting started with an Excel workbook. To create a new worksheet or access an existing one, you can either start from scratch or utilize a pre-designed template. A single Excel worksheet is a tabular spreadsheet that consists of a matrix of rectangular cells grouped in rows and columns. It has a total of 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns, resulting in 17,179,869,184 cells on a single page of a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet where you may write, modify, and manage your data.

In the same way as a file or a book is made up of one or more worksheets that contain various types of related data, an Excel workbook is made up of one or more worksheets. You can also create and save an endless number of worksheets. The major purpose is to collect all relevant data in one place but in many categories (worksheet).

As we know that there are so many spreadsheet applications available in the market. So these applications provide the following basic features:

Rows and columns:

Rows and columns are two distinct features in a spreadsheet that come together to make a cell, a range, or a table. In general, columns are the vertical portion of an excel worksheet, and there can be 256 of them in a worksheet, whereas rows are the horizontal portion, and there can be 1048576 of them.

In spreadsheets, formulas process data automatically. It takes data from the specified area of the spreadsheet as input then processes that data, and then displays the output into the new area of the spreadsheet according to where the formula is written. In Excel, we can use formulas simply by typing “=Formula Name(Arguments)” to use predefined Excel formulas.   • =MIN(Arg1: Arg2): It is used to find the minimum number from the given range of numbers.
  • =TODAY(): It is used to find today’s date.
  • =SQRT(Arg1): It is used to find the square root of the specified cell.

For example, you can use the formula to find the average of the integers in column C from row 2 to row 7:

The range of values on which you want to average is defined by D2:D6. The formula is located near the name field on the formula tab.

We wrote =AVERAGE(D2:D6) in cell D9, therefore the average becomes (2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7)/6 = 27/6 = 4.5. So you can quickly create a workbook, work on it, browse through it, and save it in this manner.

Functions of SpreadSheet

In spreadsheets, the function uses a specified formula on the input and generates output. Or in other words, functions are created to perform complicated math problems in spreadsheets without using actual formulas. For example, if you want to find the total of the numeric data present in the column then use the SUM function instead of adding all the values present in the column.

The spreadsheet provides various types of commands to manipulate the data present in it. 

Pivot Tables: It is the most commonly used feature of the spreadsheet. Using this table users can organize, group, total, or sort data using the toolbar. Or in other words, pivot tables are used to summarize lots of data. It converts tons of data into a few rows and columns.

Uses of Spreadsheets

The use of Spreadsheets is endless. It is generally used with anything that contains numbers. Some of the common use of spreadsheets are:

  • Finance: Spreadsheets are used for financial data like it is used for checking account information, taxes, transaction, billing, budgets, etc.
  • Forms: A spreadsheet is used to create form templates to manage performance review, timesheets, surveys, etc.
  • School and colleges: Spreadsheets are most commonly used in schools and colleges to manage student’s data like their attendance, grades, etc.
  • Lists: Spreadsheets are also used to create lists like grocery lists, to-do lists, contact detail, etc.
  • Hotels: Spreadsheets are also used in hotels to manage the data of their customers like their personal information, room numbers, check-in date, check-out date, etc.

The title bar displays the name of the spreadsheet and application. 

2. Toolbar:

It displays all the options or commands available in Excel for use.  

3. NameBox:

It displays the address of the current or active cell.

4. Formula Bar:

It is used to display the data entered by us in the active cell. Also, this bar is used to apply formulas to the data of the spreadsheet. 

5. Column Headings:

Every Excel spreadsheet contains 256 columns and each column present in the spreadsheet is named by letters or a combination of letters. 

6. Row Headings:

In a spreadsheet, everything like a numeric value, functions, expressions, etc., is recorded in the cell. Or we can say that an intersection of rows and columns is known as a cell. 8. Cell referring:

A cell reference, also known as a cell address, is a way for describing a cell on a worksheet that combines a column letter and a row number. We can refer to any cell on the worksheet using cell references (in excel formulae). As shown in the above image the cell in column A and row 1 is referred to as A1. Such notations can be used in any formula or to duplicate the value of one cell to another (by using = A1).

9. Navigation buttons:

A spreadsheet contains first, previous, next, and last navigation buttons. These buttons are used to move from one worksheet to another workbook. 

10. Sheet tabs:

As we know that a workbook is a collection of worksheets. So this tab contains all the worksheets present in the workbook, by default it contains three worksheets but you can add more according to your requirement.

How to Create a New Spreadsheet or Workbook

To create a new spreadsheet follow the following steps:

Step 1: Click on the top-left, Microsoft Office button and a drop-down menu appear.

Step 2: Now select New from the menu.

Great explanation – Wish I had known about the ability to duplicate a worksheet with the simple “Click on the worksheet tab, hold the control key down and drag to the right. I wasted a lot of time creating a new worksheet, copy and paste the original worksheet contents to the new worksheet – for each of the 12 months in a year. ☺

Probably a detail that goes too far … but “Sheets” and “Worksheets” are not the same. “Worksheets” is a subset of “Sheets”, since there can also be charts on their own Sheet, or in older versions Macro Sheets also had their own tab …

Ah, yes good point. You can still create Chart Sheets and Macro Sheets in newer versions of Excel.

Everything in Excel starts with creating a new workbook. It’s the very first thing we do before we input, organize, or calculate data in an Excel worksheet.

You’ve probably created hundreds (if not thousands) of Excel workbooks. It’s so basic that you might think that there’s nothing left to learn about it 🤔

But there’s always something new to learn.

This article will cover what you already know and what you need to know about creating Excel workbooks. You’ll learn how to create a new blank workbook, create a new workbook from a template, and make an existing workbook as your template.

A workbook is an Excel file that contains one or more worksheets where you can enter and store data. Each worksheet in a workbook is composed of a large number of cells that can hold data you can organize accordingly.

Microsoft Excel allows you to create a new workbook from a blank workbook or a template.

Let’s create a new blank workbook. You’ve probably done this multiple times already but let’s do a quick recall 😊

  • Open Microsoft Excel.

An Excel window opens and asks you what you want to do.

  • Double-click Blank Workbook.

It’s as simple as that!

You now have a new workbook 👍

You can click any of the cells in this worksheet to input data into cells. You can even add another worksheet by clicking the plus (+) button in the worksheet tab.

Create a new workbook while still in an open workbook

If you already have a workbook open and you want to create a new blank workbook, you can do this 👇

  • Click the File tab from the left side of the Ribbon.
  • Select New from the left sidebar.

When you already have an Excel workbook open and you want to create a new one, you can also use this Keyboard shortcut for New File. Press Ctrl + N on your keyboard.

This keyboard shortcut is also used for other programs, so it’s good to know one 😊

Create a new workbook from a template

Instead of starting with a blank workbook, you can use an Excel template to quickly create a new workbook for a particular project like planners, lists, charts, and more.

Excel has predesigned templates you can choose from. These templates are ready to use with formatting and formulas tailored to your needs.

Excel templates are already done for you which means saving a lot of time while being visually consistent and attractive 😀

To create a new workbook from a template, you can do the steps below.

  • Go to the File tab.
  • Select New.
  • Choose your template from the suggested Workbook templates below.

There are a lot of options to choose from. There are workbook templates for Business, Personal, Planners and Trackers, and more!

You can browse or search for more available templates.

For example, you want to create a new workbook to budget your finances 💸

You can create your own but you can also choose to use this Personal monthly budget Excel template .

This is what the Personal monthly budget template looks like.

All you have to do is to enter your data since the template already has the layout, format, and formulas done for you. You can also do custom formatting to this template like changing the font or colors 😊

If you already have an existing workbook and you want to open it, you can do the steps below.

  • Click Open.
  • Choose the Excel workbook.

You will see recent Excel files. Select which file you want to open.

You can also search from other locations like from your OneDrive, from your PC to find your Excel files 🔍

Use an Existing workbook as a template

If you don’t like the available templates in Excel, you can always create your workbook. You can then save this file as a template that you can reuse for a new one 🎨

Here’s how to do just that.

  • Go to File.
  • Right-click on the existing workbook file, then select Open a copy.

This way, you won’t lose the existing workbook and you can use its custom formatting and formulas as a template for your next Excel project 👍
