Each volunteer must complete the Volunteer Application, the last three appendices of the Volunteer Handbook, and the Volunteer Waiver.

Please note: Minors looking to volunteer must have all lines requiring a signature co-signed by their parent or legal guardian.

Our group volunteer opportunities take place in our warehouse. We have group opportunities available twice a day Monday through Thursday from 9am - 12pm and 1pm - 4pm, and once a day Fridays 9am – 12pm. Groups of 10 or more may volunteer on a Saturday when available. As a volunteer you will be helping your community by sorting and boxing an array of food items that will then be delivered to families in Palm Beach County. The Palm Beach County Food Bank can accommodate up to 15 volunteers per group session. Children 14-15 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. We do require 1 adult per 5 minors under the age of 16.

Individual Opportunities

Our individual volunteer opportunities take place in our warehouse. We have opportunities available twice a day Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. and  1 p.m. - 4 p.m., and once a day Fridays 9am - 12pm. If you are a family, and would like to schedule time to work together, please reach out to the Volunteer Coordinator directly. Court Ordered Community Service

The Palm Beach County Food Bank welcomes individuals seeking to collect volunteer hours for court ordered community service. Court ordered community service volunteers must be handled on a case to case basis, and will be scheduled by the Volunteer Engagement Manager directly.

We have opportunities available twice a day Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. - 4 p.m., and once a day Fridays 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Community Service

There are two kinds of community service volunteers: students and court-ordered.

Student Volunteers

Students may volunteer to complete community service hours for school or other educational programs. Check out Flagler Habitat for Humanity clubs at local high schools! Flagler Habitat’s youth policies apply – no one under the age of 14 may volunteer with Habitat.

When volunteering, please sign in/out of the Habitat sign in sheet. You are responsible for recording your hours on the Habitat sign in sheet as well as any additional forms required. Flagler Habitat is not responsible for nor will log any unrecorded hours.

Transportation to and from the volunteer site is not provided by Habitat.

All volunteers must complete a waiver before volunteering and minors will need a parent or guardian signature. Please fill out an interest form , call our office or email [email protected]  to get involved.

Court-Ordered Community Service

Before volunteering with Flagler Habitat, please contact us by calling our office or emailing  [email protected] to schedule a meeting. For court ordered or recommended community service, we reserve the right to decline certain charges based on our community service policy. If filling out an interest form, please indicate your community service in the comments field.

You must bring a valid state issued I.D. and your court paperwork which includes your name and charge. When you begin volunteering, please identify yourself to the Habitat personal on site and sign in/out on the Habitat sign in sheet. You are responsible for recording your hours on the Habitat sign in sheets as well as any additional forms required. Flagler Habitat is not responsible for nor will log any unrecorded hours.

There are four locations that make up the 15th Judicial Circuit of Palm Beach County. The main courthouse is in West Palm Beach.

County Clerk

Clerk of the Circuit Court is an elected position in Florida, and the position comes with many duties. The Clerk has an important part in all things court-related. The clerk handles jury management, maintaining court records, and taking payments for court-ordered fees and fines.

The Clerk is also the source for Palm Beach County court records, marriage licenses, financial reports, real estate, and other records.

The Clerk of the Circuit Court also has the role of Clerk to the Board of Commissioners and is the official custodian of those county records. This office is also responsible for recording deeds and mortgages, along with issuing and recording marriage licenses.

District Court

Courts in Palm Beach County fall under the jurisdiction of the 15th Judicial Circuit of Florida. A trial administrator handles the administration for the courts. The circuit courts function as trial courts with general jurisdiction. There are 20 judicial districts in Florida.

County courts have limited jurisdiction in their own counties. There is at least one county court in each county in Florida. There are slightly different rules for the county courts, compared to the circuit courts.

Marriage and Divorce Records

Marriage and divorce records are available through the Clerk’s office, both through a portal and by request.

Magistrate Court

Magistrates are allowed to hear certain cases in Palm Beach County. Magistrates are a step below judicial officers, but have been given the authority to conduct hearings, hear testimony, and evaluate evidence.

In the 15th Judicial Circuit, there are five family magistrates, one child support magistrate, and one juvenile magistrate.

Civil Court

Civil courts hear cases that are not criminal in nature and usually involve a financial or property dispute between two people. However, there are multiple courts that hear different kinds of civil cases.

Circuit Civil Court is the court that hears cases where the damages requested are more than $50,000. This includes things like foreclosures, contract disputes, and product liability.

County Civil Court and Small Claims are used for cases involving lesser dollar amounts. Small Claims Court is used for cases involving less than $8,000. County Civil Court hears cases that are more than $8,000 but less than $50,000. These cases may include tenant/landlord disputes, automobile negligence, and debt collections.

Veterans Court

Veterans Court is a special program for veterans who have been charged with misdemeanors and also struggle with mental illness and substance abuse. With mentors and community resources, this court attempts to address the issues involved.

This program offers drug and mental health treatment, along with community resources. Persons in this program must appear in court regularly, submit to drug and alcohol testing, and attend all treatment sessions. They are not allowed to be around weapons, and they must remain in their county of residence, unless they receive permission to leave.

Nonviolent offenders may be eligible for drug court as a diversion program, or it may be ordered as part of a probation sentence. The program provides intensive treatment for substance abuse and requires regular court appearances. Mandatory drug and alcohol testing, along with attendance at all treatment sessions are also part of the program.

This includes the Adult Drug Court, Delinquency Drug Court, and Family Treatment Court. Adult Drug Court offers a treatment program to non-violent felony offenders. Charges will be dismissed upon completion of the program. Delinquency Drug Court is a 6 month program for juveniles. Family Treatment Court is a program for parents in the dependency program, designed to assist in the reunification of families.

Criminal Court

Criminal Court handles most cases involving criminal offenses, including felonies and misdemeanors. The Circuit Criminal Court hears felony criminal cases that may result in a person being sentenced to 1 year or more in prison. County Criminal Court is used for more minor misdemeanor crimes that carry less than a year in jail as the maximum sentence.

Probate Court

Probate Court is focused on wills and estates and determines how a deceased person’s estate may be distributed. This court also hears cases involving guardianship.

Family Court

The Family Division hears cases in domestic relations. This includes things like name changes, divorce, custody, paternity, and child support.

Juvenile Court

This court hears cases involving delinquency, dependency, and emancipation. Delinquency refers to criminal offenses. Dependency refers to truancy or cases where a child has been neglected or abused.

Mental Health Court

An offender may be offered a choice between prosecution and mental health treatment through this court program. This program is a minimum of 12 months and is a court-supervised treatment program for non-violent offenders. It includes random drug and alcohol testing, and participants must attend all treatment sessions. Participants must take any medication as prescribed.

Unified Family Court

Unified Family Court is the umbrella name for all cases related to family court. This includes divorce, domestic violence, mental health, name changes, adoption, child support, and paternity cases.

Feeding South Florida® provides food assistance and other resources and support to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity and hunger in Broward, Miami Dade, Palm Beach, and Monroe Counties. We rely heavily on the support of volunteers to help us serve our community on a daily basis. We welcome individuals, families, students, groups, corporate teams, community organizations, and more, to join us in our mission. Community Service as an Alternative to Fine Payments

Having defended thousands of different types of criminal cases in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade County, at the Law Offices of Leifert & Leifert, we are thoroughly familiar with the forms of penalties that our clients face . Relatedly, we are also aware of the fact that, with expert representation, our clients need not have their lives turned completely upside down due to past mistakes or misunderstandings.

For example, many defendants are sentenced to pay fines as part of their penalty; these fines can range from hundreds of dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. Having to pay large sums of money is difficult for many individuals, especially those who have difficulty obtaining work due to the stigma of having been convicted of a crime. Our criminal defense attorneys know that there are solutions to this type of problem—our legal know-how and inside knowledge of local judicial practices have given us the ability to successfully advocate on behalf of our clients in these types of circumstances.

How An Attorney Can Help

With our firm representing your case, you can be hopeful that we can navigate the situation such that you don’t have to be penalized even more than you already have been. Our firm knows that many local judges allow for community service to serve as an alternative to fine payments if the defendant is unable to make such payments. The court’s comparison of outstanding fine payments to prospective community service is not arbitrary—the court assigns a reasonable value to the work to be completed by the probationer (the defendant now on probation) and then determines what type of and how much community service work needs to be completed to equal the value of the outstanding fine payments. Our firm, when appropriate, makes sure to articulate to the court that the work being completed is of the highest value, so that it takes fewer community service hours to balance out the remaining outstanding fine payments.

Community Service Requirements

Our defense attorneys know that the community service work to be performed must be performed at locations approved by the court and that the hours worked must be verified in a manner determined by the court. Simply doing what you believe to be “community service” work does not necessarily count toward what the court believes is “community service” work. While it must be approved and verified by the court, the community service work that you may find yourself doing can range from manual labor to clerical work in an office building. What type of community service job you will be performing is up to the court system.

The fact that the court can allow community service as an alternative to fine payments and that there is flexibility with regard to what type of community service work is to be performed is a testament to the fact that judges have a great deal of discretion—the way to ensure that they will issue rulings and sentences that are most in your favor is to retain an attorney who knows the court system and those who play an important role in the system. Administration

Under the Department of Public Safety, the Justice Services Division provides professional assistance to both the citizens of Palm Beach County and the Justice System through a variety of highly professional programs. 

These programs are age and issue specific. Services are centered around legal issues impacting children, teens, and adults. Education | Palm Beach County charter school is considered a ‘state’ agency, appeals court rules

The ruling by a three-judge panel of the 4th District Court of Appeal rejected arguments that Franklin Academy, a Palm Beach County charter school, should be considered a “county” agency.

The distinction is important, at least in part, because of requirements placed on lawsuits filed against state agencies.

The ruling stemmed from a November 2018 incident in which Michael Soto, a student at Franklin Academy, was injured while on a school playground, according to a lawsuit filed in Palm Beach County circuit court.

For lawsuits to move forward against state agencies, notices must be sent to the Florida Department of Financial Services within three years of the underlying incidents — a requirement that doesn’t apply to lawsuits involving county agencies.

The injured child’s father, Efrain Soto, pursued a lawsuit against Franklin Academy, but written notice was not served until March 2022, more than three years after the accident, according to Wednesday’s ruling.

A circuit judge dismissed the lawsuit, finding that the charter school is considered a state agency, and the appeals court upheld that decision.

“As a matter of first impression, we hold a charter school is a ‘state’ agency, not a ‘county’ agency, as those terms are used in (a section of state law),” said Wednesday’s ruling, written by Judge Jonathan Gerber and joined by Judges Robert Gross and Dorian Damoorgian.

“Thus, … a claimant seeking to institute a negligence claim against a charter school must present the claim in writing to the charter school, and to the state’s Department of Financial Services, within three years after such claim has accrued, and obtain the Department of Financial Services’ or the charter school’s denial of such claim in writing, as a condition precedent to maintaining such action.”

The phrase “matter of first impression” indicates that the issue has not been decided previously in Florida courts.
