How to Join a Friend’s Server in Project Zomboid

Image of Daniel Trock

In the event of a zombie apocalypse, most major towns and communities would probably be more or less cut off completely. Chances are good that you’re going to be stuck where you are for a pretty long time, so I sincerely hope you’ve got some friends within walking distance. Some good friends, especially ones you trust to keep one round in the chamber, can make the whole process a little more bearable. Here’s how to join a friend’s server in Project Zomboid .

Last month, The Indie Stone released Build 41 of Project Zomboid , which among other things, finally reintroduced online multiplayer to the game. Even when Build 41 was in beta, the multiplayer was its most popular aspect, so now that it’s finally available in the main version, everyone’s teaming up to weather the undead hordes together. Before you can do that, though, there are a few things both you and your friend need to set up to get the server survival-ready.

To join a friend’s server in Project Zomboid

  • The server host needs to send an invitation to you to add you to the whitelist
  • Go to the server browser from the main menu and use the filter bar to find your friend’s server by name
  • Enter the password to join

First of all, your friend, the server host, needs to actually launch the server. From the main menu, they need to click the host button to set up a server, including naming it and setting the RAM to allocate it to. Remember, hosting a server is a bit more demanding of your computer than just playing on one.

Assuming you don’t want randos joining (and if you’ve watched enough zombie movies, you definitely don’t), your friend will need to set a password on the server in the Details menu. Your friend can also tweak a few other things, such as whether Workshop mods are enabled, how many players are allowed in, whether PvP is enabled, and whether the text chat is enabled. With all that squared away, they can launch the server.

Once the server is up and running, they’ll need to send you an invite. Private servers have whitelists managed by the server owner, which prevents random people from getting in even if they know the password. If the server host sends you an invite through the Steam overlay, you’ll automatically be added to the whitelist.

Once you’re invited, boot up the game and open the server list from the main menu. Click on the Internet tab and you’ll get a list of every server currently running. At the bottom of the window is a filter bar where you can type the name of your friend’s server to find it. Once you’ve got the right server, enter your account name and the server password on the right-hand side, and click join to get in.

Voila, you’re in! Enjoy surviving the zombie apocalypse together! Remember, if you get bitten, don’t wait until everyone is crammed into a small room to bring it up.

Project Zomboid Build 41 Multiplayer Guide: How to Play With Friends

Image of J.R. Waugh

Project Zomboid has been in Steam’s Early Access since 2014 and has been persistently updated ever since.  This article is a guide for players seeking either to quickly join their friends online or to host their server without the hassle of the technical details.  In addition, players will get to know ways in which their servers can be tweaked to fit their expectations.  This will largely focus on how Steam can be used to streamline the process.

How to Play With Friends in Project Zomboid

Joining a session is rather simple.  If you know a friend who is currently hosting, or has found a server, just find them in your friend’s list as long as they show up Online, and it should show options for Project Zomboid. What you’re looking for is the option to join them in their session.  Click that and you’ll be on your way.  Alternatively, you can search for their server in the ‘Join’ menu, selecting ‘Internet’ at the top and not ‘Favorites’ and entering their server name in the bottom left ‘Name Filter’ box, highlighting their server, and clicking join, after which you’ll simply need to build your character to your specifications and set out in the game world.  Be sure to add the server as a favorite if you want to use it in the future, too!

How to Host

Creating a multiplayer server in Project Zomboid is easy enough.  From the main menu, you simply click ‘Host’ and decide on the particulars of their server name and memory settings, but don’t worry too much about these details for now.  To the right, there is an option called ‘Manage Settings’ and thereafter you will see options to create new settings, or edit settings if they want to edit these.  After you provide a name for the settings you will be treated to a large array of options to optimize the Project Zomboid multiplayer experience for you and your friends.  This includes how your server appears in the in-game search function as well as Steam, which you can customize by its name as well as whether it’s public and therefore will show up for others to find, friend or stranger alike.

You can also customize certain functions like Presets to change the in-game world to anything from an apocalypse to a more peaceful building and survival sim.  You can even customize loot rarity, which can help make the survival experience easier or more challenging depending on how easy it is to find bandages, food, and ammunition.  The server can be changed made to have as many as 126 players on it, too.  Once you’ve picked your settings, save them and click back to the ‘Host Game’ menu once again and click ‘Start’ at the lower left  You can choose whether you as the host are in God mode or invisible, as well.

Project-Zomboid-Editing-Settings-1280x720

Adding players is much easier after all that through Steam, as you can simply open the pause menu, click ‘Invite Friends’, and either click on the box that says ‘Deny’ which toggles to ‘Allow’ which enables them to join you, or even better, select the friend you wish to invite by name as they appear, and click ‘Invite’ at the bottom.  They’ll receive a simple invitation via Steam they can click to enter.  Project Zomboid even recommends invited players not to have the game running before receiving the invitation, and after accepting there will be a message that prompts to say the game is being open with special parameters, they just need to click ‘OK’ and they’ll be in your game.

It’s a Dangerous World Out There

Once everybody is on, you’ll quickly realize you haven’t spawned in the same location every time.  That’s okay!  Even if so, part of the charm of this game is fending for yourself while navigating the in-game map and figuring out a safe place to meet and form your band of survivors.  Once you do, you’ll find there is plenty you will need to learn to adapt and get across the infected landscapes of Kentucky.

Project Zomboid Build 41 released December 20, 2021 and the multiplayer has been a hit with players and streamers alike.  The game’s developers, The Indie Stone, have reminded players that despite this improvement they are always working to improve the experience going forward.  The multiplayer experience can be a tad frustrating to set up, and navigating the menus when wanting to host your own server can be confusing, but we are happy to help provide any insight we can along the way.

How to join a friend’s server in Project Zomboid

Image of David Rodriguez

Project Zomboid has been one of the longest-running zombie survival games on Steam to date. It has grown and evolved a great deal over time. Features such as multiplayer and persistent games have changed how Project Zomboid works regarding online multiplayer. This guide will go over the revamped online feature set and how to find a friend with ease.

Finding a friend’s server

how to join project zomboid friend

In Project Zomboid, you can play online and with friends via two methods. The first method, and the oldest, is via online server IP connectivity. Select join a room from the main menu to join a server.

Once at this screen, search the internet tab, and a list of public servers can be discovered. If a friend is online and hosting a room, it will appear on this list. Furthermore, your friend can send you their IP and server information. If you enter this on the right-side panel pictured above, you can join them via this interface.

Hosting a server with friends

After you select a host room and configure the game experience to your liking, you will load into the open world. On the screen will be a pane with your server information. You will see your external IP address and Steam ID. Once you have access to this information, you have two ways to invite players into your server.

With the first option, you just have to send your external IP to a friend who wants to join your server. They will use the previous step to enter your information and join the server.

The second, and much easier option, is a new feature that was introduced in a recent patch. Full Steamworks support.

The new method of playing with your friends is also the easiest out of everything mentioned previously. As a host, hit escape on the keyboard, and you will find an invite friend option. This invite will allow all your Steam friends to join games with ease.

Struggling with Project Zomboid’s tough learning curve? One easy way to make your adventure just a little bit easier is loading up with a few friends. After all, being able to split up responsibilities and tasks will exponentially improve the efficiency of your fledgling anti-zombie base. Here’s how to play with friends in Project Zomboid .

How to Play with Friends in Project Zomboid

To play with friends in Project Zomboid, you need to host or join a multiplayer server. To host your own server:

  • Click Host on the main menu and load the server.
  • Hit Esc. and then select Invite Friends.
  • Look through your friends list and toggle the option next to the friend you want to play with from Deny to Allow.
  • This will invite your friend to the game and allows them to join.

If you invite your friend via the Steam Friends list (Shift+Tab), you’ll still need to allow them in Project Zomboid, or they won’t be able to join your server. Alternatively, your friend can host a server; then, you can join it using the same steps.

Inviting Friends Project Zomboid

When creating a server, Project Zomboid will default to a private server, so only friends on your friends list can join. Players can also host public servers if they want to enable random people to also join the server. To do this, select Server Settings when first hosting the server.

Joining a Multiplayer Server

To join a multiplayer server in Project Zomboid, click Join on the main screen, then hit the Internet tab to see a list of public servers. Select a server that you want to join, then enter a custom Username and Password. These credentials will enable you to save characters on those servers. Many servers utilize special settings and mods to make the game more interesting.

Do not use the same username or password you use for other accounts.

Learn how to play Project Zomboid multiplayer

Want to know how to play multiplayer in Project Zomboid? The latest Project Zomboid update introduced multiplayer servers to the game, along with a range of other improvements and overhauls to various systems. If you want to jump into the zombie apocalypse with other people, we’ve got you covered.

Below, we’ll cover everything you need to know to play multiplayer in Project Zomboid, including how to host and join open multiplayer servers and how to play in co-op with your friends.

Cover image for YouTube video

How to play Project Zomboid multiplayer

To play Project Zomboid multiplayer, you need to either host or join a server. These options are both found in the main menu.

If you want to join a server, press join and then select internet on the top bar. This will bring up a long list of all servers that are currently online. You can filter this list in a variety of ways, so we recommend filtering out empty servers if you want to find other players. When you’ve found a server you want to join, click on it to bring up the server details on the right hand side.

Here, you’ll need to enter a password if the server has one (plenty are just open for anyone to join) and create an account name and password. Creating an account is mandatory if you want to hop into multiplayer. When you’re ready, hit join server to create a new character and enter the world. Make sure you head in with the best character build if you want to make it past the first day.

When joining an ongoing multiplayer server, it’s important to note that you won’t start on the first day of the apocalypse, unless you join as soon as the host creates the server. It’s likely that some time has already passed, meaning the water and power could be shut off, loot might be gone, and other players may have already claimed houses and cars. It can be very difficult to survive online, so make sure you’re familiar with our Project Zomboid tips and tricks if you want the best chances of survival.

When you’re ready to quit, simply go to the pause menu (remember, this won’t actually pause the game) and press quit. The server will automatically save your progress while you play. If you want to join the same server again, check in the favourites tab, as it should save the server there so that you can easily access it again and pick up where you left off.

How to host a Project Zomboid server

If you’d rather host your own server, you’ll have a lot more control. You start by setting the server name and memory size. When you're ready to dive into the details, click on manage settings to open the toolbox and start tinkering with every little part of your experience. Here, you can tweak the apocalypse to perfectly match your tastes, with almost every aspect of the game available for you to edit. You can also set the max player count, toggle which Steam Workshop mods you want to use, and set how players can interact with each other and the world.

When creating a server, the most important part that you need to choose is whether to make it private or public. If you want to set up a co-op server to play with friends in Project Zomboid, head to the Details tab (found at the top of the manage settings menu) and make sure that the public checkbox isn't ticked. We also recommend setting a password and sharing it with your friends. If you want to host an open multiplayer server that anyone can play, tick the public box and start the game. This will list your server in the server browser, allowing all players to join.

That’s everything you need to know about Project Zomboid multiplayer. If you've set up a server and found some friends, check out our guide on how to build a base in Project Zomboid so that you can hang out safely without zombies eating your brains. If you've found enemies instead, take a look at our infections and illness guide to learn how to heal any wounds or cuts you may have received from zombies or players.

To play with friends in Project Zomboid, players will need to first start a server in the game or join an already created server.

If you want to create your own server, you will need to load up the game and find the host option at the main menu, as shown below.

Clicking host will take you to the following tab. In this tab, you will see  "manage settings"  on the right and an option for server name and memory.

We will come back to both the  name and memory  later, but for now, click manage settings. Under manage settings, you will see an option to create new settings at the top of an options list.

When you are done naming a server, click back at the  bottom of the page . Doing so will take you to the previous page. At that point, you will need to click edit settings. Under edit settings, you will need to set your server's public name if you want it to open to other players.

If not, leave it as is and add a  password  for good measure. Other than that, we would recommend editing the various settings that can be found on the left of your screen.

All of the   settings, as shown above, change various things about the game, from zombie behavior to loot rarity. Take a moment to go through all of them and see what fits your  playstyle.

When you finish, simply hit save settings you will be ready to start your server. To start your server, hit back and then select your server under the server name tab.

After you select your server, allocate the amount of ram the server will use. We recommend choosing at least  4GBs , or you will encounter slowdowns and lag.

Once you choose your  memory,  just click start and wait until you load into the game. Upon loading in, your friends will be able to find and join your game with the  server   IP and default port .

They can also join your game by looking under the dedicated server browser and looking for your server's name. If it's  password-protected , all they will need to do is input the password and hit join. If they are not able to join, you can invite them to your server by hitting the escape key and clicking on the invite option.

The ultimate Project Zomboid Multiplayer Guide.

Project Zomboid is really fun when you play multiplayer with your friends, with the ability to host, play, and join servers. While this can be extremely exciting, understanding and mastering the multiplayer features of this brilliant game can be a bit of a task initially. To put an end to this dilemma, we have compiled this ultimate multiplayer guide just for you. This all-in-one guide will walk you through all of the different multiplayer functions and features.

Project Zomboid Multiplayer Guide – How to Host, Play, & Join Servers with Friends?

project-zomboid-multiplayer-server-steam-join-add-play

How to Play on a Project Zomboid Server?

In order to play multiplayer with friends on a Project Zomboid server, you need to open the Steam client application. From here, open your Steam library and look for Project Zomboid in the dropdown list of games. Once you do find the game, right-click on it and then select Properties . Once you do so, pick BETAS and then choose b41multiplayer from the options.

Next, you need to update the game (only if any updates are available). Next, simply start the game.

Once inside the game, you will need into the multiplayer options and pick the right choices. For starters, you need to decide what type of server you want to join. The first type is a Host Server . To join one of these, you will need an invitation from a Steam friend . The next type of server is a Dedicated Server . To get into such a server, you need to enter its name or IP in the Internet tab.

Once you complete these choices, you need to enter the description for certain multiplayer options.

  • Server Name – Enter the name of the server you wish to join here.
  • IP – Enter the server IP in case you are joining with a server IP.
  • Local IP – You need not enter anything here
  • Port – Enter 16261 here (The mentioned number is a default port)
  • Server Password – If the server has a password, you will need to enter it here.
  • Description – You need not enter anything here.
  • Account Username – Enter your nickname here
  • Account Password – Enter the password to your account here

How to Host a Server to Play Project Zomboid with Friends?

In order to host a server to play Project Zomboid with friends in multiplayer, you first need to make sure the game is open. Next, you need to head over to the main menu and click on Host . Once here, click on Manage Settings , then Create New Settings , then Tune your Server , and then Save . Now, click on Back and then Start .

To invite friends to this server, all you need to do is press Escape and then Invite . Alternatively, you can also invite friends via Steam.

Before you go ahead with making a server, you need to pay close attention to the allocation of RAM . We recommend a minimum allocation of 2 GB , and 4 GB for a good experience.

A simple rule you can live by is allocating an extra 200 mb for every player you plan to invite to your server. For example, if you plan on adding 5 players and you already have 4 GB of allocated memory, you will need to allocate 5 GB of RAM (4 GB + 5×200 MB = 5 GB)

Obviously, this means that hosting a server can be quite strenuous on your system. Because of this, we recommend you go ahead with a co-op server only if you have the necessary resources.

How to Create a Dedicated Steam Server?

To create a dedicated server for Steam for Project Zomboid multiplayer, you need to first open the Steam client. Once you do so, head to the Library and then select Tools . Here, look for Project Zomboid Dedicated Server . Once you do find it, right-click on it and select Properties . Next, select BETAS and then select b41multiplayer in the options. Once you do so, you need to install or update the tool.

Next, you need to configure the settings of your server. After that, you need to head into Port Forwarding . During this process, make sure to not have any Antivirus programs running in the background. Next, you need to open the following ports in both your firewall as well as router (you only need to enter it into the router if you have one):

  • TCP: 16261 – 16300
  • UDP: 16261 – 16300, 8766, 8767

Next, make sure to allow StartServer64.bat file in your firewall. You will find this file inside STEAMFOLDER\steamapps\common\Project Zomboid Dedicated Server\ .

Next, configure startSever64.bat script and set -Xms16g-Xms16 . Here, 16 indicates the amount of RAM you wish to allot to your server.

Now, run the StartServer64.bat . A console window should now appear with a bunch of lines. Here, you need to enter a new administrator password. You will need to create a new password. It is important to take care of this password and never lose it.

Once you enter the password, you will notice that the server will pause for a while. All you need to do is wait for it to complete loading. Once it finishes loading, you should see RCON: listening on port ##### . If you do get this message, it means that your server is up and running.

You can now connect to the console! And that’s it. This is all you need to know about the multiplayer mode in Project Zomboid. With the help of this guide, you will find yourself easily adding, creating, or joining a server to play the game with your friends.

And now that you know how to do so, take a look at our guide on How to Activate the Debug Mode in Project Zomboid .

How to play Project Zomboid multiplayer with friends

Image of Jalen Lopez

Project Zomboid is an intense zombie survival game where it is almost guaranteed that you’ll die multiple times.

Zombies can kill your character with one bite, while starving to death or succumbing to the elements are other real possibilities. The game can be challenging, but it’s a rewarding experience, especially when playing with a group. Playing with friends in Project Zomboid is simple, but there are a couple of different options that every player should consider.

There are currently two ways to play Project Zomboid with friends: hosting a server or joining an existing server. You can find both of these options in the main menu, and they each have benefits that might better suit your group.

Selecting the Join option allows players to go through a list of active servers hosted by other players. You can filter the servers with a few options like whitelisted servers, password-protected servers, high player count servers, and more. Once you find the right server for your group, just ensure you all join the same server.

Hosting a server allows you to create a new world. You can fine-tune the settings to your liking, creating a custom experience perfect for your friend group. This also allows players to start in the world from the beginning. The world in existing servers has progressed since the server was created.

Players looking for a private world for themselves and their friends should consider hosting their own server. Groups looking to interact with other players should find a suitable active server with a healthy community and ruleset that matches their style.

Find Friends and Teleport in Project Zomboid Multiplayer

Now that multiplayer has finally dropped for Project Zomboid you can start to get into the survival action with friends as well. You can start your own non-dedicated servers through the game client or both join a public server through the game’s in-game server list.

But once you’re both in the game, how are you supposed to find your friends in Project Zomboid? This guide will show you how to find your friends, how to teleport to each other if you have admin level access and how to set a spawn point so you can both spawn in the same location each time.

Find Friends Using the Map Teleport to Friends in Multiplayer Respawning Together With Friends Upon Death Creating In-Game Factions and Inviting Other Players

How to Find Friends Using the Map in Project Zomboid

One of the other great features that Build 41 introduced into the game was the new in-game map system. By pressing M you can open up the map and see where your character is on the map. Both players automatically have access to the map.

By using both maps you can try to move towards each other until you meet up. Simply move in the same direction and you will get to each other.

You will only be able to see parts of the map that your character has actually traveled to. That being said, you can still see when you are moving towards the other player.

Trying to find friends in Project Zomboid build 41 by looking at the map

If you area really new to the game you can always try to use this map resource to find your way around the world! Then try to meet up in one location.

How to Teleport to Your Friends in Multiplayer

If you don’t want to have to run around the map trying to survive you can also just teleport straight to your friend in multiplayer. You can only do this if you have admin powers. If you are the host of the game and don’t have admin powers yet, you can follow this guide to get admin powers for your character first.

Now that you have admin powers for your character you can easily teleport them straight to you. Alternatively, you can just as easily teleport yourself to your friend’s position as well. To do this, press the ESC key to open up the menu. Now, select the PLAYERS menu. Now you can see every player connected to the server. On the right side of the screen there are some options. See the image below.

Teleport to friends in Project Zomboid through the admin panel

Above you can see that there are two players connected. (Yes, the second is also me but with a controller. Tragic I know, but it works for the demonstration.) There are two options we are interested in at the moment; Teleport and Teleport to You.

Teleport will send you to the player that you have highlighted in the Players screen.

Teleport To You will send the selected character to your location. There you can move on and play the game however you wish.

Respawning With Friends in Project Zomboid

Another option that you have to find friends is to simply respawn together. By owning a Safehouse together you and your friends can spawn in the same house whenever a character is lost. This means you will always have a way of finding each other. The bad part is that you will have to lose your character…

The following information will only apply if the server you are on allows player safehouses and respawning. You can view the settings of the current server you are on by opening the User Panel and selecting See Server Options. Then you can see if safehouses and respawning are enabled.

First, you can take your own safehouse. (You can read a detailed guide on safehouses here, but for now we will go over it quickly.)

Find a suitable house and right-click on the ground floor of the house. Select the option Claim Safehouse and it will be yours. Now, Right-click again and select View Safehouse . This will allow you to configure the options of the safehouse. You can add other players to the safehouse by selecting Add Players. Find your friend in the list and add them to your house.

A screenshot of Project zomboid showing how to allow the Respawn in safehouse option in the menu

They can how open up the safehouse through their User Panel and select the option at the bottom which reads Respawn in Safehouse. (See image above) Upon death, their new character will respawn in this location.

Note that the player will have to accept the invitation to join the safehouse before they can use it in any way.

Create and Invite Friends to an In-game Faction

Another great feature you can take advantage of in Project Zomboid is the ability to create an in-game faction. Once you have created a faction, you can add other players to it. That way you should be able to see each other on the map. To create a faction and invite players follow these steps:

  • Open up the User Panel while player on a multiplayer server. (The icon which reads CLIENT )
  • Open up the Faction screen by selecting the button named Faction
  • Select the option ( Add Player) and find your friend’s name on the players list.

Inviting friends to you faction in Project Zomboid in order to be able to find them

Now that you and your friends are in a faction you should be able to locate each other easier. You can set a Faction Tag . This will appear above the faction members head when they are moving around in the game. You can toggle on and off the ability to PvP each other in Melee situations from the Faction screen as well. Best to leave it turned off it you are constantly fighting hordes in close quarters.

How to Find Your Friends in Multiplayer in Project Zomboid

The key aspect of playing Project Zomboid in multiplayer mode is the ability to team up with friends to survive, gather resources, and construct a secure base. However, locating your friends can be a challenge due to the random spawning mechanics in the game. In this guide, we will explore three methods to help you find your friends in multiplayer mode.

1. Communicate Through Chat

Communication plays a vital role in sharing information and coordinates. To locate your friends, open the chatbox by pressing “Enter” or “T” and engage in conversation. By providing details about their surroundings, structure styles, or specific buildings, your friends can give you an idea of their current location. While this method can be effective, keep in mind that Project Zomboid has a vast map, and finding each other through chat alone may not be the most efficient approach.

2. Use the Teleport Feature

The most common method to find your friends is by utilizing the teleport feature to instantly transport yourself or your friends to specific locations. To use this feature, ensure that you have administrative privileges on the server. If you are the server host, you can grant yourself admin privileges by typing the command “/setaccesslevel [yourSteamname] admin” in the chatbox. Alternatively, you can ask the server’s admin to give you permission. Once you have admin access, open the chatbox and enter the command “/teleport [Player1] [Player2]” to teleport Player 1 to the location of Player 2.

3. Adjust the Server Setting

If the previous methods are not effective, you can modify the server settings to locate your friends’ positions. Start by creating the server as usual and navigating to the “Manage Settings” section. From there, go to the “Players” tab and find the option “MapRemotePlayerVisibility.” This setting allows you to control the display of players on the in-game map. Set the value to either 2 (friends) or 3 (everyone) to see your friends’ locations on the map. Save the settings and start the server. This method can be used for both new and existing worlds.

That’s how to find your friends in multiplayer in Project Zomboid. If you have any additional suggestions or tips for locating friends in the game, feel free to share them in the comments below.
